Oh, there you are. You know how this works?

0:00:030:00:06

DIY SOS Big Build, City of Edinburgh, and a question -

0:00:060:00:09

how do you fit 9,500 man-hours, 300 builders

0:00:090:00:13

and a giant renovation of a community project

0:00:130:00:16

into just one hour?

0:00:160:00:18

We're about to show you.

0:00:180:00:20

We're here for Children In Need,

0:00:200:00:23

to help with a centre for young people with special needs.

0:00:230:00:26

But this centre is more than just a building.

0:00:290:00:33

It's a home.

0:00:330:00:35

There's no other way to describe it. It is a home.

0:00:350:00:39

-What sort of things happen at The Yard?

-Happy!

0:00:400:00:43

It makes you feel happy, does it? Is it your favourite place?

0:00:430:00:47

-Do you think?

-Yeah, I think so.

-Yeah.

0:00:470:00:51

'It's a massive project.'

0:00:510:00:54

It's like standing in the middle of a human ant hill.

0:00:540:00:57

It is like an ant hill.

0:00:570:00:59

'But the commitment is exceptional.'

0:00:590:01:01

It's for the kids, you know.

0:01:010:01:02

If you cannae help them, there's something wrong.

0:01:020:01:05

Later in the programme,

0:01:060:01:07

we'll tell you how you can help Children In Need.

0:01:070:01:10

As usual, the team and I are here,

0:01:110:01:14

but once again we'll need an army of builders to make this happen.

0:01:140:01:17

Look at this. A builders' yard. This is DIY SOS The Big Build!

0:01:170:01:22

THEY CHEER

0:01:220:01:24

-What things have you got in your shop?

-We've got all this.

0:01:300:01:35

'This is six-year-old Jamie Pass and his little sister, Erin.'

0:01:350:01:39

-Is that the Swiss...what's it called, Swiss...?

-Swiss roll.

-Is it?

0:01:390:01:43

'Jamie has special needs.'

0:01:430:01:45

-We're playing baker shops.

-I can see that.

0:01:450:01:47

'It's hard for Mum, Gillian, to deal with.'

0:01:470:01:49

We need to go back.

0:01:490:01:51

'We were really shut off by Jamie's disability,'

0:01:510:01:54

because in a lot of ways people look at him and say,

0:01:540:01:57

"He's a normal child, it's just you're not controlling him."

0:01:570:02:00

'Jamie was diagnosed with autism just before his fourth birthday.'

0:02:000:02:04

Getting this diagnosis was a great relief, but we had about a month

0:02:040:02:09

where we had practically every service coming in, and then

0:02:090:02:13

everything died down again, and you were left again to fend for yourself.

0:02:130:02:17

-Me don't think Daddy no like.

-You don't think Daddy would like that.

0:02:170:02:20

He was at the stage where he was in a nursery biting, hitting, kicking

0:02:200:02:25

and I would come in every day and be given litany of his bad behaviour.

0:02:250:02:31

And during that time somebody said to me, "Have you gone to The Yard?

0:02:330:02:37

"Have you seen The Yard?"

0:02:370:02:39

-'So, what is The Yard?'

-Hello!

0:02:390:02:42

The Yard is a drop-in centre in the heart of Edinburgh

0:02:420:02:45

for children with special needs.

0:02:450:02:47

For mums like Gillian...

0:02:470:02:49

-Stop.

-Go!

0:02:490:02:51

..it's a lifeline.

0:02:510:02:54

I was literally ready to phone The Samaritans.

0:02:540:02:58

We had no friends, that would come and have a play date

0:02:580:03:01

because Jamie was quite abusive.

0:03:010:03:03

His little sister was months old and really as she got older

0:03:030:03:08

he was quite abusive to her too.

0:03:080:03:11

But I came to The Yard and I walked through the door

0:03:140:03:16

and I felt I was home.

0:03:160:03:18

Gillian's son, Jamie, loves coming here.

0:03:220:03:27

He has a great creative freedom in the art room.

0:03:270:03:30

He's painted his own stop and go sign.

0:03:300:03:32

And he adores roadworks, he polices now the go-karts that go round

0:03:320:03:37

The Yard when they have to stop and go.

0:03:370:03:40

I love it because there's lots of things and it has cones.

0:03:400:03:45

-There's lots of things and there's road cones!

-Yes!

-And your sign.

0:03:450:03:49

Show them the stop.

0:03:490:03:50

Stop, go.

0:03:500:03:52

The Yard helps 1,500 children and their families,

0:03:520:03:56

children aged 3 to 25 are welcome.

0:03:560:04:00

They have a whole range of additional needs.

0:04:000:04:03

Lauren Shaw was born with Down's Syndrome.

0:04:060:04:09

I play go-karts.

0:04:090:04:12

Go-karts, yes.

0:04:120:04:14

-Bikes, on the swing, the big swing.

-And the art room.

0:04:140:04:19

-Art room.

-Yeah.

0:04:190:04:21

-Be careful.

-I will!

0:04:210:04:24

Lauren's mum, Monica, told me that she wants just one thing for her.

0:04:240:04:28

I want her to be happy and content. And to have friends.

0:04:280:04:34

And to have a life, to have a good routine,

0:04:340:04:37

a nice home and to be happy.

0:04:370:04:39

And do you see those things blossoming in Lauren at The Yard?

0:04:390:04:44

Yes. Absolutely.

0:04:440:04:45

I've been doing baking.

0:04:450:04:49

-And you do it all yourself, don't you?

-All by myself.

0:04:490:04:55

The skills that she's learning there,

0:04:560:04:58

because she's with children who don't look at her differently,

0:04:580:05:01

they don't notice, they're just playing with her, mates.

0:05:010:05:04

They're just hanging out, and so's Lauren, you know?

0:05:040:05:07

So Lauren's not being mollycoddled,

0:05:070:05:09

or treated differently at all.

0:05:090:05:11

You know, she's in the thick of the game.

0:05:110:05:14

And that is so important for her growing up, to learn these skills.

0:05:140:05:18

Celine Sinclair leads the team,

0:05:180:05:21

helping families like Gillian's and Monica's.

0:05:210:05:24

We can provide love and care and support for our children,

0:05:250:05:29

but we can't make friends for them.

0:05:290:05:31

And, you know, at The Yard, that is something we can do.

0:05:310:05:35

We have the space and the support to actually end some of that

0:05:350:05:38

social isolation that children with additional support needs face.

0:05:380:05:42

Because nobody wants their children to be lonely.

0:05:420:05:46

They use what they have, but it's falling apart.

0:05:460:05:49

The tiny kitchen the kids love cooking in,

0:05:490:05:53

an ageing art room and a tattered and dated sensory room.

0:05:530:05:57

Outside, the children love the network of cycle ways.

0:05:590:06:02

There's a great big swing, and as many adventures as staff can create.

0:06:040:06:09

The keyword here is imagination.

0:06:110:06:14

But imagination can only take you so far.

0:06:140:06:17

At The Yard we have to raise a lot of money every year

0:06:200:06:23

and without BBC Children In Need we would simply not be operating.

0:06:230:06:27

We might be really strong as an organisation in terms of what

0:06:300:06:34

we deliver, but we are housed in a completely dilapidated,

0:06:340:06:38

falling-apart building.

0:06:380:06:40

We have to meet regulations.

0:06:410:06:44

We work with children with very complex needs.

0:06:440:06:47

Next, we are going to have to replace our kitchen.

0:06:470:06:50

We wouldn't be allowed to operate

0:06:500:06:52

with the kind of kitchen that we have just now.

0:06:520:06:56

We face the problem in the future of having to replace

0:06:560:06:58

a very, very antiquated heating system.

0:06:580:07:02

And outside, we did have a climbing structure until last year,

0:07:030:07:07

but that's completely rotten.

0:07:070:07:09

Make no mistake, The Yard is a cherished and loved service,

0:07:110:07:15

but a decrepit building

0:07:150:07:17

and soaring running costs threaten to leave them without a home.

0:07:170:07:22

Without this service, there are an awful lot of children

0:07:220:07:25

and families within the city of Edinburgh

0:07:250:07:28

who wouldn't receive the respite that we offer them,

0:07:280:07:31

and who wouldn't have a safe space to play in.

0:07:310:07:34

There's families that have got nowhere else

0:07:370:07:41

to take their children.

0:07:410:07:42

I mean, nowhere else.

0:07:420:07:44

It would be taking away from these children's futures,

0:07:440:07:47

these children's lives would be altered because of it.

0:07:470:07:53

So, what would make it better for the children?

0:07:530:07:57

Somewhere safe that he can climb and explore.

0:07:570:08:00

-He'd love to climb trees and things like that.

-Yes! Of course!

-Of course.

0:08:000:08:05

I'd like a slide and a violin.

0:08:070:08:09

Slide and you'd like a violin.

0:08:090:08:13

First I've heard.

0:08:130:08:15

Children with special needs are hard on things.

0:08:170:08:21

They will whack something, they will bang it.

0:08:210:08:24

Things just become more dilapidated.

0:08:240:08:27

And we're thankful for what we've got,

0:08:270:08:30

but if it could be better for our kids,

0:08:300:08:32

we would be very thankful for that too.

0:08:320:08:35

'So, it's out with over 1,000 children and in...

0:08:350:08:39

'..with the team and hundreds of builders. Look at them!

0:08:410:08:46

'As usual, we've got just nine days to finish the build.

0:08:500:08:53

'Mind you, we'll be getting some amazing kit for them.'

0:08:570:09:01

-We're having proper traffic lights.

-Proper traffic lights.

0:09:010:09:04

-Wow, with buttons that kids can cross?

-Everything. Yes.

0:09:040:09:07

'And, of course, all this outside work

0:09:080:09:11

'will be much easier in sunshine. Sunshine in Scotland, ha!'

0:09:110:09:14

-Weather going to be all right for you, hey?

-Doesn't bother me.

0:09:150:09:18

-Doesn't bother you at all?

-Scottish.

0:09:180:09:20

See, a different kind of bloke up here.

0:09:200:09:21

'There is so much to change that we've put

0:09:230:09:25

'Julian in charge of all the works outside.

0:09:250:09:28

'See if you can guess why.'

0:09:290:09:30

And all your diggers.

0:09:300:09:32

I mean, there's loads of groundwork going on.

0:09:320:09:35

Pretty to watch, isn't it?

0:09:350:09:37

All that movement, some swinging that way, some swinging that way,

0:09:370:09:39

dumpers mingling around.

0:09:390:09:41

Love that, love a bit of groundworks, me.

0:09:410:09:44

It's like, sort of, engineering ballet.

0:09:450:09:49

That's exactly what it is, isn't it?

0:09:490:09:51

There's a man in his element.

0:09:520:09:54

'Inside, Billy's already made himself right at home.'

0:09:580:10:02

# Billy is his name It sets me aflame

0:10:020:10:05

# And so it's a shame, you see... #

0:10:050:10:07

Hi, I'm Billy. Nice to meet you.

0:10:070:10:10

How are you finding working with Billy at the moment?

0:10:100:10:13

-Is it all right?

-Quite fun.

0:10:130:10:15

-Special, isn't it?

-He never stops laughing.

0:10:150:10:18

-Telling funny jokes, singing along.

-Telling funny jokes?

0:10:180:10:21

Telling jokes. Funny jokes, that's a different thing altogether, really.

0:10:210:10:25

-I've moved it up there, now.

-Up that way.

0:10:250:10:27

'But we're not mad,

0:10:280:10:30

'it's Chris who's been given the task

0:10:300:10:32

'of running the work inside.'

0:10:320:10:34

-There's nearly a new format for DIY SOS here.

-What you mean?

0:10:340:10:37

Well, I do the inside, Jules does the outside.

0:10:370:10:39

-I do the little bits of chat in between.

-You do the link.

0:10:390:10:42

Billy obviously still on the electrics.

0:10:420:10:45

Well, unfortunately, we've inherited him, inside and out.

0:10:450:10:48

-It's kind of leaves one person, then, who's...

-Flying in the wind.

0:10:480:10:52

Redundant, a little bit, really, you know what I mean?

0:10:520:10:56

'That's a good point, actually. Where is Mark?

0:10:560:10:59

'Ah, there he is.'

0:10:590:11:01

I'm really busy, actually, I'm tweeting for some cakes.

0:11:010:11:05

'Actually, that's quite important, yes.

0:11:050:11:07

'Someone needs to keep their eye on the bigger picture.'

0:11:070:11:11

# What's new, pussy cat? Whoa, whoa, whoa. #

0:11:110:11:15

'This bigger picture is the brainchild

0:11:150:11:17

'of our resident designer, Gabrielle Blackman.'

0:11:170:11:20

This centre is a complete lifeline for families that use it.

0:11:200:11:24

It's really emotional for them, this place,

0:11:240:11:27

and we've got to make a space for them to be able to socialise

0:11:270:11:32

with each other and look after each other more.

0:11:320:11:34

'And we should all look after each other more, so here's Gabby's plan.'

0:11:340:11:37

The sensory room will be rebuilt and renewed.

0:11:370:11:40

New flooring, heating and insulation will make the place cosy

0:11:400:11:44

and cheaper to run.

0:11:440:11:46

There'll be a new storage room

0:11:460:11:48

and a wall to provide a little privacy for the loos.

0:11:480:11:51

Families will love the dedicated play space for the under fives.

0:11:510:11:56

Their old room becomes the office, while the art room gets a refit.

0:11:560:12:00

By removing this wall, the kitchen becomes huge,

0:12:000:12:02

with a new door to a grown-up cafe area.

0:12:020:12:05

What about out here? How are we going to change this?

0:12:080:12:11

Because they already love this area.

0:12:110:12:12

They love it, but there's loads of things that were not working

0:12:120:12:16

and we've just got to really take a fresh look at it, really.

0:12:160:12:20

So we've broken it down into sections

0:12:200:12:23

and the community here are incredible.

0:12:230:12:26

And we've got parents and amazing friends in here

0:12:260:12:28

just taking it section by section to make each bit really enjoyable.

0:12:280:12:33

So, we're completely renovating the wheelchair swing,

0:12:350:12:38

we're re-tarmacing the cycleways,

0:12:380:12:40

adding traffic lights, which Jamie will love, of course,

0:12:400:12:43

and a dome to provide shelter in inclement weather.

0:12:430:12:46

There's a new roundabout, water features, a sandpit, there's...

0:12:460:12:50

Well, there's masses going on, too much to list!

0:12:500:12:52

You'll see it as it happens.

0:12:520:12:54

-Is it going to be beautiful then?

-It is going to be beautiful.

0:12:540:12:56

-But is it going to be beautiful?

-It is.

0:12:560:12:58

Will they like it more than they like it now?

0:12:580:13:00

-No, they are going to like it more.

-Promise?

-I do promise.

0:13:000:13:03

-Pinky promise?

-Pinky promise. It's going to be fab.

-High-five.

0:13:030:13:07

-Low five.

-No, not this bit!

-High one.

0:13:070:13:11

'The children love cooking, we've mention that,

0:13:150:13:18

'and the old kitchen was tiny and wheelchair users couldn't join in.

0:13:180:13:21

'This new kitchen will have something very special for them -

0:13:210:13:24

'moving units.'

0:13:240:13:27

A wheelchair user wants access to the wall units,

0:13:280:13:30

They'll press a button and wall units will come down

0:13:300:13:32

to meet the wheelchair, and stop at wheelchair height.

0:13:320:13:35

-So it's all quite specialised.

-That's fantastic.

0:13:350:13:38

I might get one myself.

0:13:380:13:40

So that anyone of normal height that comes in to your kitchen...

0:13:400:13:44

Say you came round to cook dinner...

0:13:440:13:45

But if you're going to use it, you just press...

0:13:450:13:47

It will all come down to my height.

0:13:470:13:49

-Nice.

-Isn't it?

-Like that. That could work, couldn't it?

0:13:490:13:52

Yes, definitely. I don't think it goes that low, does it?

0:13:520:13:55

'You've got to love it when the trades join in too.

0:13:570:14:00

'And that's not always doing, here. Go on, Chris!'

0:14:000:14:03

What's going on with this window?

0:14:030:14:04

I'll give you, very generously, two guesses.

0:14:040:14:08

What's it saying to you? I am now a...

0:14:090:14:12

Hippopotamus.

0:14:140:14:16

-No, door.

-Door.

-It's a door.

0:14:160:14:18

French windows?

0:14:180:14:20

-Possibly, not sure.

-A big opening, basically. What you can walk out of.

0:14:200:14:24

-Instead of just looking out of.

-Wheelchair access.

0:14:240:14:28

Well done, gentlemen.

0:14:280:14:30

'It's all happening so quick.

0:14:300:14:32

'This is a unique build in so many ways.

0:14:320:14:35

'I don't think I've ever seen undercoat applied on day one.

0:14:350:14:39

'Hold on, that is undercoat, isn't it? Oh, it's not undercoat?'

0:14:390:14:42

I know that designers these days, and I have on several

0:14:420:14:45

occasions made the point that designers are obsessed with grey.

0:14:450:14:48

Are we going to have the grey rant?

0:14:480:14:50

Yes, you are going to have the grey rant.

0:14:500:14:52

We do houses, and everyone's going on about how grey is in,

0:14:520:14:55

and every designer does grey and 14 shades of grey, and now we have a chance with kids,

0:14:550:14:59

where you want bright colours, and we paint it battleship grey again.

0:14:590:15:04

Trust me, it is going to look...

0:15:040:15:06

The whole point is that the windows disappear and the trees

0:15:060:15:08

are what you see - the green and the beautiful outdoors.

0:15:080:15:11

-That's the point.

-Why don't you paint them green, then?

0:15:110:15:13

Because you don't want a fake green next to the real green of nature.

0:15:130:15:16

That would look rubbish.

0:15:160:15:18

'Would it, though? Am I being picky? Am I hard to please?

0:15:200:15:23

'Speaking of hard to please,

0:15:230:15:24

'here comes the man from the accident prevention people, RoSPA.'

0:15:240:15:29

So, are you here to tell us that we can't do that

0:15:290:15:31

cos it's too dangerous or are you here to tell us,

0:15:310:15:33

"If you're going to do that, it'd be better if you did this?"

0:15:330:15:36

-How does it work?

-Yeah, it's about what is it you want to achieve

0:15:360:15:39

and how can we help you to come up with a sensible solution?

0:15:390:15:43

So, instead of banning an activity like climbing

0:15:430:15:46

because you might fall off,

0:15:460:15:47

rather, just make sure that what you are climbing is suitable,

0:15:470:15:50

the thing is a suitable size for children to get their hands on them.

0:15:500:15:54

So, how's it looking? Cos we got lots of different things going on.

0:15:540:15:57

It's fantastic. Yeah. I've never seen so many hi-vis jackets in one place.

0:15:570:16:01

Yeah.

0:16:010:16:03

'Well, that's nice, isn't it? Nice to get something right.

0:16:030:16:06

'But that grey is still going on. I need a break.'

0:16:060:16:09

Fancy a cup of tea?

0:16:090:16:10

-Yeah, that would be nice.

-What tea do you want?

0:16:100:16:13

Earl Grey would be lovely, actually.

0:16:130:16:15

'In such tough times the generosity of everyone here is...

0:16:180:16:21

'Well, do you know, it's incredible.'

0:16:210:16:23

-Brilliant. How long are you giving us?

-Three boys for ten days.

0:16:230:16:26

-Three boys for ten days?

-Yeah.

0:16:260:16:29

-And you're paying them?

-Yeah.

0:16:290:16:31

-But you're not going to get paid?

-Yeah.

-Mate, thank you very much.

0:16:310:16:35

Every single one of these people has their own reason to be here.

0:16:350:16:40

One of the colleagues that I work with, his younger son came here,

0:16:400:16:43

he's got learning difficulties.

0:16:430:16:44

He is now turning 23. We only started discussing this about a week ago.

0:16:440:16:48

We told him we are getting involved when we heard about it

0:16:480:16:50

and it was good to be part of something for somebody you know and you're helping them out.

0:16:500:16:55

Everyone loves the big swing.

0:16:550:16:57

It is being completely renovated by two tradesmen

0:16:570:16:59

who both have children here. Dave's daughter is Hannah.

0:16:590:17:03

It's kind of awe-inspiring, really, isn't it?

0:17:050:17:07

That these guys all give up all their time to come in here

0:17:070:17:10

and do this for us, really. Us and our families.

0:17:100:17:12

You know, it's...very generous. Very.

0:17:120:17:16

Tony has got a daughter, Sissy, who is a regular here. There she is.

0:17:160:17:20

When I got a schedule emailed through with who was coming,

0:17:200:17:23

I was totally, totally amazed at the amount of people

0:17:230:17:26

who are giving up their free time to come and do this.

0:17:260:17:30

How will your Sissy react?

0:17:300:17:31

How will she react? She will love the place. She'll jump up and down.

0:17:310:17:37

She'll flap her hands like she normally does.

0:17:370:17:39

She'll be totally excited.

0:17:390:17:41

Tony's invited me to pop round and see the family.

0:17:410:17:45

Wife Dawn, Sidney and Sissy.

0:17:450:17:48

Sissy has Asperger's.

0:17:480:17:51

Right, Sissy, can you pretend that they're not there?

0:17:510:17:53

Are you going to do the game with us?

0:17:530:17:55

Time at home can be very challenging for everyone.

0:17:550:17:58

Does she need to do the game with us?

0:17:580:18:01

Hello.

0:18:010:18:03

Oh, what are we playing?

0:18:030:18:06

Sissy, what is your game?

0:18:060:18:08

'When I turn up...'

0:18:080:18:10

-Can you show me how it works, Sissy?

-No, I need your finger.

0:18:100:18:13

'..she doesn't want to talk. Which is fine.'

0:18:130:18:16

Not particularly in the mood today.

0:18:160:18:18

'Having Asperger's can make her inflexible at home.

0:18:200:18:24

'This is not all the family have to deal with.'

0:18:240:18:26

When Sissy's having a good day, she can have a chat with you

0:18:270:18:30

-and she can just be OK.

-Have a conversation, yeah.

0:18:300:18:35

But her moods can change in a minute.

0:18:350:18:39

She will kick walls, she'll cry, she'll wail

0:18:390:18:42

and the whole house will just descend into chaos.

0:18:420:18:45

'Beyond the immediate family,

0:18:450:18:48

'it's so hard for anyone to really understand. Why would they?'

0:18:480:18:52

You need people who are in your situation. You really, really do.

0:18:530:18:58

And that's where The Yard comes in.

0:18:580:19:02

Dawn and her fellow mums rely on it for friendship and support.

0:19:020:19:06

Why is it so important that this place survive the cuts

0:19:070:19:11

and the difficulties and the financial difficulties?

0:19:110:19:13

Well, there's nothing like it. We've tried everywhere.

0:19:130:19:17

It's a place where you can be with your friends and share

0:19:170:19:21

and talk openly and completely honestly about your life

0:19:210:19:27

and your experiences bringing up your child.

0:19:270:19:29

There is nowhere else like it.

0:19:290:19:32

It tends to be that you join something that is

0:19:340:19:36

for your child or you go to somewhere that's for you.

0:19:360:19:39

Here it is for the whole family. It's for everybody.

0:19:400:19:42

So we all come together. This place supports all of us as a family.

0:19:420:19:47

How important is the respite aspect of this

0:19:500:19:53

where you can get five minutes' break?

0:19:530:19:56

Yeah, and they can get five minutes' break from us.

0:19:560:19:58

-Exactly, uh-huh.

-You think it works both ways?

0:19:580:20:00

It's very important for them. Oh, aye.

0:20:000:20:03

'But nothing in their lives is simple.'

0:20:030:20:06

We want them to have the same kind of play experiences

0:20:060:20:09

other children get to have. But they can't have it in the park next door.

0:20:090:20:13

They can't have it in places like soft play and things like that

0:20:130:20:16

because there's always eyes on them.

0:20:160:20:18

People are always apprehensive or anxious

0:20:180:20:20

about the way they are going to behave.

0:20:200:20:22

Here they can have the same play experience as everybody else.

0:20:220:20:25

And when the children are happy, the mums are getting a break too.

0:20:260:20:30

Even we get respite in other forms.

0:20:320:20:36

There's respite, they came and said, "You have to leave the house."

0:20:360:20:39

And I said, "I actually just want five minutes in the house by myself to clean the bathroom."

0:20:390:20:43

And I was able to send Jamie here with the respite worker

0:20:430:20:46

and I got to clean the bathroom.

0:20:460:20:48

These mums live in a world where even the most menial tasks

0:20:510:20:54

are a welcome break.

0:20:540:20:56

Which is why we need to sort out this building and its grounds

0:21:000:21:03

to make sure The Yard is still here in another 20 years.

0:21:030:21:07

It's officially the end of the day, but we can't get people to go home

0:21:080:21:11

cos they're so excited about how much has happened in this room.

0:21:110:21:14

If you look, the sanctuary room has been taken apart

0:21:140:21:16

and a new one built in its place -

0:21:160:21:17

much bigger, much brighter and much more impressive.

0:21:170:21:20

The art room has been taken apart and a new one is ready to go in.

0:21:200:21:23

In this room, we have taken out a wall and we have made a space

0:21:230:21:28

ready for patio doors over in the corner and put a steel in.

0:21:280:21:30

We've built a new room in the corner here

0:21:300:21:33

which is going to be like a utility room.

0:21:330:21:35

If you look over that side, believe it or not,

0:21:350:21:37

that's already been painted.

0:21:370:21:39

There's huge things happened out in the garden here.

0:21:390:21:41

If you look here there is 60 tonnes of spoil has been taken away.

0:21:410:21:44

That is 40 tonnes waiting to go. And where has it come from?

0:21:440:21:47

Well, it's come from this area.

0:21:470:21:49

The sandpit has been completely cleared out

0:21:490:21:52

and an area in the corner for a climbing frame has been made.

0:21:520:21:55

Up here, a new pathway has been made around the top

0:21:550:21:58

and a base for, like, a giant Wendy house

0:21:580:22:00

has been built over there.

0:22:000:22:01

And, of course, the swing that everybody loves so much

0:22:010:22:04

is being revamped in the corner.

0:22:040:22:05

How did we do so much in just one day?

0:22:050:22:07

Cos 90 people turned up to help, that's how. Pretty impressive, eh?

0:22:070:22:11

Morning.

0:22:130:22:15

A bright new day, but Jules has already managed

0:22:150:22:19

to lose that spring in his step.

0:22:190:22:21

Yeah, I'm beginning to get stressed out and I don't want to

0:22:210:22:23

cos that's one thing I told myself I wasn't going to do

0:22:230:22:26

was get stressed out.

0:22:260:22:28

Face rubbing is generally the sign. I'm generally, you know...

0:22:280:22:31

It's the start of my stress point.

0:22:340:22:36

I don't like being stressed out.

0:22:380:22:40

Oh, dear. This won't help Jules either.

0:22:400:22:43

We have just dug up a cable.

0:22:430:22:45

The funny thing about a hole - when you've got one

0:22:480:22:51

it's amazing how many men will gather round to look into it.

0:22:510:22:55

Trust me. Try doing this -

0:22:550:22:56

dig a hole somewhere and stand there looking into it.

0:22:560:22:59

You'll suddenly have about four or five other blokes looking into it as well.

0:22:590:23:03

Don't go near that with a spade until somebody who knows

0:23:030:23:05

what they're talking about tells you it's safe.

0:23:050:23:08

-I though he knew what he was talking about.

-Him?

0:23:080:23:10

I'm surprised they come in there and asked me to sort it out.

0:23:100:23:13

I thought, "Whoa, hold it." James! Oh, here he is.

0:23:130:23:16

So, I dinnae believe anything he tells me, no?

0:23:160:23:19

-Nothing at all he tells you.

-Here, get in there.

0:23:190:23:21

We still go and lay flowers on the grave of the last person

0:23:230:23:25

who believed what he said.

0:23:250:23:27

It's a bit damp round here, but a new Wendy house or log house

0:23:300:23:34

or house made of logs is flying up. Is it a shop? Is it a shelter?

0:23:340:23:38

Maybe a puppet show. It's up to the children, really.

0:23:380:23:41

Thank you.

0:23:410:23:42

A climbing designer and the kids love climbing too,

0:23:420:23:44

but our plans for a fort are in trouble.

0:23:440:23:47

No matter how many diagrams we pore over,

0:23:470:23:49

we can't work out how to make a tunnel through the fort.

0:23:490:23:52

Luckily...

0:23:520:23:53

..we've unleashed 100% pure Scottish inspiration.

0:23:550:23:59

He's even called Jock.

0:23:590:24:01

Jock is my new best friend and I'm actually going to get him

0:24:020:24:07

a lovely scarf because he's been doing so much designing today,

0:24:070:24:10

but you need to have a big scarf to be a designer.

0:24:100:24:14

We've been falling over this the whole time and Jock said,

0:24:140:24:16

"Well, why don't we use that for the tunnel?" We had the guys

0:24:160:24:20

look at the metal and it's all good so the kids will absolutely love it.

0:24:200:24:24

Any other brilliant ideas just come and secretly tell them

0:24:240:24:27

and I'll pretend that they are mine. OK? Is that all right?

0:24:270:24:30

He's a very happy chap as well, isn't he?

0:24:300:24:32

This building costs £1,000 a day to run

0:24:320:24:35

and it's still freezing in winter.

0:24:350:24:37

Improving heating and insulation will cut costs and make it cosier.

0:24:370:24:40

Just look at these wonderful people.

0:24:400:24:44

Even the bosses are getting stuck in. How do you spot them?

0:24:440:24:47

Look at their hands.

0:24:470:24:49

They are almost as soft as mine.

0:24:490:24:51

-How many years since you've been on tools then?

-A long time.

0:24:510:24:55

Probably about 17 years. 17 years in an office.

0:24:550:24:58

You know, a special project like this

0:25:000:25:02

really does bring out the best in people.

0:25:020:25:04

Something very beautiful's just happened.

0:25:070:25:09

Tell us what it is then.

0:25:090:25:10

We needed 20 tonnes of rock to create a retaining wall.

0:25:100:25:14

We had no idea where to get it from. We had no money, we had no nothing.

0:25:140:25:18

I got a phone call from a man called Kevin.

0:25:180:25:20

Kevin, where are you, who are you?

0:25:200:25:22

You've just sent me 20 tonne of beautiful, beautiful rock.

0:25:220:25:25

It's not the rock that's beautiful - it's you, mate.

0:25:250:25:27

Thank you very much.

0:25:270:25:29

Quite right too.

0:25:290:25:30

You know, the help comes in all shapes and sizes.

0:25:300:25:32

Where should you be today?

0:25:340:25:36

-Holiday.

-That's dedication, isn't it?

0:25:360:25:39

-That's dedication. What can I say?

-Not a problem.

0:25:390:25:43

See, that's the sort of thing.

0:25:430:25:44

You don't know these people and they're all here for one cause.

0:25:440:25:47

It's brilliant. It's so nice.

0:25:470:25:49

Everywhere I look there are people going the extra mile.

0:25:490:25:54

-Shouldn't you be at home at the moment?

-I should be. Yes.

-Because?

0:25:540:25:57

-My wife's just gave birth.

-When?

-Yesterday, 12:43. A wee baby girl.

0:25:570:26:01

And here she is. Our youngest-ever visitor to DIY SOS.

0:26:030:26:08

Look at you and your little face. Look. All excited.

0:26:080:26:11

Do you know what? She should be very proud of her dad.

0:26:110:26:14

All these people are doing their bit because they know and you have seen

0:26:160:26:19

how much this place means to the parents and children that use it.

0:26:190:26:24

It's a place supported by Children In Need and you too can help.

0:26:240:26:28

There are still thousands of children across the UK

0:26:350:26:39

who have nowhere to go for their basic needs.

0:26:390:26:42

To help support projects like this,

0:26:420:26:44

please text the word DIYSOS to 70705.

0:26:440:26:50

Text messages will cost £5 plus your standard network charge

0:26:500:26:54

and £5 will go to Children In Need.

0:26:540:26:57

For full terms and conditions visit bbc.co.uk/pudsey.

0:26:570:27:02

Thank you.

0:27:020:27:04

Your money really will make a difference

0:27:040:27:06

and I know times are tough but, if you can, give a little bit now.

0:27:060:27:10

ALL: Thank you.

0:27:100:27:12

ALL: Thank you.

0:27:120:27:13

ALL: Thank you.

0:27:130:27:15

When it comes down to it, every build needs just four things -

0:27:160:27:21

labour, equipment, materials and fuel.

0:27:210:27:27

All right, cake.

0:27:270:27:28

A little bit of Scottish fudge.

0:27:280:27:30

Swing renovator Dave's wife, Jane, brought us the cake.

0:27:330:27:35

That's brilliant. Thank you very much.

0:27:350:27:38

-Can we borrow him for a little bit longer?

-Definitely.

-Excited?

0:27:380:27:41

Very excited. Can't wait. Can't wait. We spend most of our life here so...

0:27:410:27:46

-Do you really?

-Yeah, yeah.

0:27:460:27:48

There's nowhere else we can go with our disabled children

0:27:480:27:51

to hang out so it's fantastic. We love it.

0:27:510:27:53

And be accepted as well, you know.

0:27:530:27:55

Because there is a lot of prejudice just now going about,

0:27:550:27:58

but in here there is nothing like that.

0:27:580:28:00

So what do you need in this place that you haven't got?

0:28:000:28:02

That kitchen was small, dirty, old. The kids are in there a lot.

0:28:020:28:08

Baking's a big thing on a Friday afternoon so, yeah,

0:28:080:28:10

it'd be fantastic if you could do something with the kitchen. Please.

0:28:100:28:14

If only she knew what's going on in that kitchen already.

0:28:140:28:18

It's going to be everything they need. But why is a kitchen so important?

0:28:180:28:21

Hello, Lauren.

0:28:210:28:23

'I'm hoping Lauren and Monica will be able to enlighten me.

0:28:230:28:26

'After she's finished wearing me out.'

0:28:260:28:29

-It's difficult when she keeps slapping me. Ah, no.

-Ha-ha.

0:28:290:28:33

You're very good at this, aren't you?

0:28:330:28:36

So, it's nice to be here on the trampoline at home.

0:28:360:28:40

It's good to play games at home,

0:28:400:28:42

but do you look forward to going and seeing your friends at The Yard?

0:28:420:28:45

Yeah, I do.

0:28:450:28:47

Who is your best friend, do you think?

0:28:470:28:49

Sissy and Sidney...and Amy.

0:28:490:28:54

What sort of things happen at The Yard?

0:28:540:28:56

-We bake cakes.

-Cakes?

-Yes.

-Do you really?

-Yeah.

0:28:560:29:00

Is it your favourite place? You think?

0:29:000:29:04

-Yeah. I think so.

-Yeah.

0:29:040:29:07

You know, we all know why the kitchen has an important place.

0:29:070:29:10

It's obvious, really.

0:29:100:29:12

Everybody uses the kitchen.

0:29:120:29:14

It's the hub of the home, isn't it?

0:29:140:29:17

-And it's a place that we all...

-Can I ask you?

0:29:170:29:19

You used the expression, "It's the hub of the home."

0:29:190:29:21

-Is it a home?

-Yes, it is.

-Like a house?

0:29:210:29:23

-Like somewhere where a family lives?

-Yeah. That's exactly what it is.

0:29:230:29:28

And that's what it is to our children as well.

0:29:280:29:31

On the big build, we are normally working for one family,

0:29:310:29:34

trying to make their house into more of a home that works for them

0:29:340:29:37

and we thought we were coming to do something very different here,

0:29:370:29:40

a community space, but it has become very apparent

0:29:400:29:44

that this is, in a very real sense, a home for the people that use it.

0:29:440:29:48

It's a family. A very big family, but a family nonetheless.

0:29:490:29:53

And that's why it's so important this home is cosy and warm,

0:30:020:30:06

the kitchen is big enough for the whole family

0:30:060:30:09

and the garden has plenty of places to play and explore.

0:30:090:30:11

Saturday morning. Fantastic.

0:30:120:30:15

I thought it would maybe quieten down a wee bit,

0:30:150:30:17

but it's actually getting busier. It's incredible.

0:30:170:30:19

There's more people, there's more painters, more electricians,

0:30:190:30:22

more ground workers.

0:30:220:30:24

I thought people were supposed to take it easy at the weekend, but no!

0:30:250:30:29

-How many of you have turned up?

-About 40 of us.

0:30:290:30:31

So there's four more painters on top of what we had already.

0:30:310:30:34

That's what I'm saying - there's just more and more people

0:30:340:30:36

turning up on the job. Fantastic. Thank you, gentlemen.

0:30:360:30:39

-No problem.

-And that means the pressure is on Chris.

0:30:390:30:42

He is being chased by a whole team of kitchen fitters.

0:30:420:30:46

I'm not worried about them. There's only nine of them.

0:30:460:30:50

No, no, no. They're cool. They're making up bits and bobs over there

0:30:530:30:56

so we'll get this flattened in

0:30:560:30:58

and then we can just push it against the wall and they can carry on so...

0:30:580:31:02

I did say 10 o'clock so we'll be all right.

0:31:020:31:05

Yeah, we'll be all right.

0:31:050:31:07

Is he convincing himself or us?

0:31:070:31:10

Outside, we must be winning.

0:31:100:31:12

We're almost halfway through and Jules has stopped rubbing his face.

0:31:120:31:16

The guys have really pulled it out the bag -

0:31:170:31:20

they've got stuck into it and cracked it out.

0:31:200:31:22

And I've been stress-free for the last couple of days

0:31:220:31:26

because you can sort of see the light at the end of the tunnel.

0:31:260:31:31

-Up!

-Whoa.

0:31:310:31:33

But your bunch are pretty much unstoppable, aren't they?

0:31:330:31:35

They came with an open mind, they're flexible,

0:31:350:31:38

they like a fresh challenge and what's been great is they have

0:31:380:31:41

got gelled in with everybody else, so it's been fantastic. Really good.

0:31:410:31:44

I don't think Jock will have ever been described

0:31:440:31:47

as flexible before, when you look at the shape of the man.

0:31:470:31:49

Definitely, yeah, that's right.

0:31:490:31:52

Flexible or not, he has impressed Gabby with his design.

0:31:520:31:55

When you leave for art college, you get given a lovely scarf

0:31:550:31:58

and you can't ever take it off. It's a designer thing.

0:31:580:32:00

Tell me it's pink. Tell me you've got him a pink scarf.

0:32:000:32:04

-Ooh.

-I've gone chunky on the knitwear,

0:32:040:32:07

it's chunky knit but there is a little bit of pink in it.

0:32:070:32:10

But only a small bit. There's some blue for his eyes.

0:32:100:32:14

-Wear it with pride.

-Red, surely. Red for his eyes.

0:32:140:32:18

From a man mountain to the smallest man on site, but which one is it?

0:32:190:32:23

I'm trying to work out who the tall one is.

0:32:240:32:27

-Well, it's certainly not you.

-I'll tell you what, you can talk.

0:32:270:32:30

Get the line here, let's have wee look then.

0:32:300:32:33

The only way to do it really is...

0:32:330:32:35

Have you got a level? Oh, hold on.

0:32:360:32:39

Hold on!

0:32:390:32:41

Aye.

0:32:410:32:42

There you go, officially the smallest man on site

0:32:420:32:44

and available for pantomime if you're doing Snow White and the...

0:32:440:32:47

OK, let's leave it. While we're doing this, the families

0:32:470:32:50

and staff of the yard have had to move to temporary accommodation

0:32:500:32:53

in a nearby school, so we've made time to go and visit.

0:32:530:32:57

Blimey, you're a lot better than me.

0:32:570:33:00

-Ah!

-Nutmeg!

0:33:020:33:04

The sense of togetherness here, of family,

0:33:040:33:07

-is quickly apparent to us all.

-MAN LAUGHS

0:33:070:33:10

The yard takes a total hammering every day.

0:33:100:33:13

A wooden piano and an organ. Two.

0:33:130:33:17

It's here that Sissy finally talks to me.

0:33:170:33:21

-What's your favourite part of the yard?

-The climbing structure.

0:33:210:33:27

Oh, is it? The climbing structures? All right, cool.

0:33:270:33:31

This is where I can see for myself

0:33:320:33:34

some of the problems these families have to deal with.

0:33:340:33:37

Gillian, for example, has to watch out for Erin's safety,

0:33:370:33:40

even when she's playing with her brother.

0:33:400:33:42

She gets flung around. See? Your go now, Erin.

0:33:440:33:50

-There is a degree of physicality involved.

-Uh-uh.

0:33:500:33:53

And just no sense of anybody else's speech or words. So it is. 6.2.

0:33:530:33:57

-So I'm still in the lead?

-Yes, you're still in the lead.

0:33:570:34:00

-Yes, totally. Unfortunately Erin gets a lot of it.

-Yes.

0:34:000:34:04

So she does.

0:34:040:34:06

He just isn't aware that he's going to do things.

0:34:060:34:10

-And sometimes it's funny, and sometimes it's not.

-Yeah!

0:34:150:34:19

-No, I can see that, yeah.

-Erin doesn't like the doggie.

0:34:190:34:23

Oh!

0:34:250:34:27

-See?

-Yeah.

-Right.

-You must be worn out at the end of the day.

0:34:270:34:33

It is really exhausting. You don't get a minute.

0:34:330:34:36

You cannot wash the dishes.

0:34:360:34:38

You can't, there's a lot of things you can't do.

0:34:380:34:41

It's gotten better, but really it is hard to have a conversation.

0:34:420:34:48

It kind of is, no, I can see that.

0:34:480:34:50

So that half an hour or hour at the yard where you can sit there

0:34:500:34:55

and have a cup of coffee and a chat with someone.

0:34:550:34:57

That's exactly it. Careful now. Careful now.

0:34:570:35:00

It's so intense I can see the problems Gillian faces

0:35:010:35:05

with Jamie's play dates. The yard is obviously vital for him.

0:35:050:35:09

And our build will help them. Scenes like this make it crystal clear

0:35:090:35:14

why they need a safe area for the under fives.

0:35:140:35:17

The more we can give them, the better.

0:35:170:35:20

We may be only halfway through now,

0:35:200:35:23

but we're more determined than ever to get the build right.

0:35:230:35:27

We've met the children and the people,

0:35:270:35:29

the helpers and everything, and they're fabulous.

0:35:290:35:31

-They're very special.

-They all want gold medals, like Olympians.

0:35:310:35:35

Honestly, the helpers, they're phenomenal.

0:35:350:35:37

We've just been to meet them and they are like...

0:35:370:35:40

-Special, aren't they?

-Unbelievable.

-You're going to cry, you.

-Yeah.

0:35:400:35:45

It's hard enough normal kids trying to bring them up,

0:35:450:35:49

but when they need that extra special help

0:35:490:35:52

it's brilliant.

0:35:520:35:53

So, if you want to help projects like this...

0:36:330:36:36

-BOTH:

-Thank you.

0:36:360:36:38

They weren't reading from the script at all(!)

0:36:380:36:41

Next morning, across the other side of Scotland in Glasgow,

0:36:410:36:44

a water feature is being crafted by guys

0:36:440:36:46

who normally deal in heavy industry.

0:36:460:36:49

Oh, look at this.

0:36:500:36:51

-Fantastic. Nice bit of kit.

-It's wonderful actually,

0:36:530:36:56

you did this off that little pencil drawing from Gabriel?

0:36:560:36:59

It's usually the back of a fag packet, we call it.

0:36:590:37:02

-But it was a wee bit better than that.

-This is marvellous.

0:37:020:37:05

It's not the norm, not what we usually do.

0:37:050:37:08

That's the thing, I know what you usually do,

0:37:080:37:10

but tell everyone what you normally do.

0:37:100:37:12

We usually build warships.

0:37:120:37:15

-That's our day job.

-Look.

-Usually the warships are grey,

0:37:150:37:18

we're sick of grey so we tried to brighten it up a bit.

0:37:180:37:21

Do you know, I've had a thought. Isn't it marvellous?

0:37:210:37:24

We're building this colourful centre for the kids

0:37:240:37:27

and so far we've painted everything grey, and the only bit we've got

0:37:270:37:30

so far that isn't grey is the bit built by the guys who make warships

0:37:300:37:34

who normally paint everything that colour.

0:37:340:37:36

That's fantastic, lads. That's amazing.

0:37:360:37:39

'You've got to love that, haven't you?

0:37:390:37:42

'The children will unleash a riot of colour in the art room.

0:37:420:37:45

'They love to let their imagination run riot.'

0:37:450:37:49

This is the art room,

0:37:490:37:51

and this is the lovely lady who's supplied us with...

0:37:510:37:54

Well, your company, has supplied us with all the kitchen units to go in this room.

0:37:540:37:58

You're like a little hobbit down there!

0:37:580:38:01

-You all right?

-I'm good, yes.

-Enjoying yourself?

-Great. Great.

0:38:010:38:06

Predominantly blokes on site, and you've been around doing a bit

0:38:060:38:09

of this and that and sweeping, you've been here all the time. You're in for the next few days.

0:38:090:38:13

Absolutely. It's been fabulous. It is a bit of fun, laughter.

0:38:130:38:17

I can't grumble.

0:38:170:38:19

They've all been perfect gentlemen to me as well,

0:38:190:38:22

-so sometimes when they've had little swearing fits...

-Even him?

-Yeah.

0:38:220:38:27

-Very impressive.

-I love them.

-They're very good, aren't they?

0:38:270:38:31

-I love them.

-Can't all stand about all day drinking tea and coffee.

0:38:310:38:33

What does he mean?

0:38:350:38:37

BUILDERS LAUGH

0:38:370:38:39

I'm speechless. Actually, I'm not.

0:38:400:38:43

I can't believe what people have given up, what they've donated,

0:38:430:38:47

the hours they've worked to make this happen.

0:38:470:38:51

Thanks for all your company's done. You've helped us massively.

0:38:510:38:54

It's hurt him, and it hurts me that we can't give each and every one

0:38:540:38:59

of them a programme of their own, but this is our thank you to you. You know who you are.

0:38:590:39:03

And with just three days to go, there are still new structures

0:39:030:39:07

going up in the garden. This is a geodesic dome -

0:39:070:39:11

whatever that means.

0:39:110:39:13

What does geodesic mean?

0:39:130:39:15

We keep using the term and none of us know what it means.

0:39:150:39:17

A geodesic dome is basically...

0:39:170:39:19

The structure is made out of hexagons and pentagons

0:39:190:39:22

in the triangle from, so it makes it a stronger structure

0:39:220:39:24

basically that encloses space.

0:39:240:39:27

So these can withstand hurricane-force winds.

0:39:270:39:29

It was designed originally by a guy called Buckminster Fuller.

0:39:290:39:33

Who calls their child Buckminster? Who wants their baby...

0:39:330:39:36

-He's American.

-Ah, that explains it, fair enough.

0:39:360:39:38

This will provide shelter outdoors from the tropical Scottish weather.

0:39:380:39:43

Listen carefully. Remember all that grey I ranted on about?

0:39:460:39:49

I'm about to eat some humble pie and agree with Gabby. I know.

0:39:490:39:54

-And you were right about the grey, I'll admit it now.

-It's amazing.

0:39:540:39:57

I knew I was right about the grey, but thank you for agreeing.

0:39:570:40:00

-A little bit smug, that look.

-I am quite smug about it.

0:40:020:40:05

I was smug beforehand because I knew it was going to work,

0:40:050:40:08

you just really annoyed me with all the shouting.

0:40:080:40:11

No, I don't think shouting's fair, is it?

0:40:110:40:14

OK, booming at close range.

0:40:140:40:16

'Yeah, OK, that's fairer.

0:40:160:40:18

-'I find designers so hard to read, whereas Mark...'

-All right, team!

0:40:180:40:22

-Yeah!

-Tell me all about it, the black gold.

0:40:220:40:24

The black gold!

0:40:240:40:26

Oh, my goodness, it's like heaven. Oh, my God, can you see the steam?

0:40:260:40:31

Everyone loves these cycleways so much, now they'll be pothole

0:40:320:40:36

and crack-free for years to come.

0:40:360:40:38

-Archie, give us a kiss.

-Aw...

0:40:400:40:44

You can't kiss a builder!

0:40:440:40:46

They can tell we're nearing the end as rooms start to be completed.

0:40:460:40:49

Inside, we now have an amazing sensory room which is really important for the kids. And us.

0:40:490:40:55

And what are the key features when you're making a sensory room?

0:40:550:40:59

We're trying to make it as calming as possible and also interactive

0:40:590:41:03

so that children can decide what they want the room to do.

0:41:030:41:06

-Why are you holding the block?

-This is a talking cube.

0:41:060:41:09

So this is red at the moment so that's why we're talking red,

0:41:090:41:12

but this is really clever, watch this. Ready?

0:41:120:41:14

-PA:

-Green.

0:41:140:41:16

-The whole room, it changes all the items in the room.

-Can I have a go?

0:41:160:41:19

Have a go, knock yourself out.

0:41:190:41:21

-PA:

-Yellow. Blue.

0:41:210:41:24

-Absolutely everything will change at the same time.

-Yellow.

-Wow.

0:41:240:41:28

'This can keep us amused for hours.'

0:41:280:41:32

That is cool. It's not working.

0:41:320:41:35

We've just discovered there's something not working in here,

0:41:350:41:39

and it's the main light switch that he put in.

0:41:390:41:41

THEY ALL LAUGH

0:41:410:41:43

Some things never change, but outside, everything has changed.

0:41:450:41:50

What an extraordinary thing you've pulled together. There are people delivering tarmac

0:41:500:41:54

and putting it down, people delivering sand...

0:41:540:41:57

There's people still building stuff all over the place.

0:41:580:42:00

It is like standing in the middle of a human ant hill.

0:42:000:42:04

It is like an ant hill, isn't it?

0:42:040:42:05

Hey!

0:42:130:42:15

Never, ever seen so many barrels on one job.

0:42:170:42:20

-HIGH-PITCHED VOICE:

-That's the way you do it!

0:42:220:42:25

'I think they're all going slightly mad.'

0:42:250:42:27

Ahhhhh....

0:42:270:42:29

Ahhhh.

0:42:290:42:31

'Yep, lost it.'

0:42:310:42:32

Maaaaa...

0:42:320:42:34

Hi-ho!

0:42:340:42:37

The mania is definitely setting in now, man. I tell you.

0:42:370:42:40

BUILDER WHINES He's the cream in the cake, that one.

0:42:400:42:43

That's the same. Ahhhhhh.

0:42:430:42:47

So it's getting there. They're not quite in tune.

0:42:470:42:50

My last measurements...

0:42:500:42:52

This is Saul, who is completely mad, by the way.

0:42:520:42:55

He's come all the way from London with some flip-flops to make

0:42:550:42:57

a musical sculpture for us, and I've made him work with Jock,

0:42:570:43:00

which is just a perfect combination, I think. What else are you going

0:43:000:43:04

-to do for us over there?

-I'm going to put in two music mushrooms,

0:43:040:43:08

which I make out of old recycled cylinders.

0:43:080:43:11

And they're all tuned to different moods,

0:43:110:43:14

like happy and another one is sort of mysterious or spooky.

0:43:140:43:19

So what does a happy mushroom sound like as opposed to a mysterious,

0:43:190:43:23

-spooky mushroom?

-A happy mushroom makes you do this.

0:43:230:43:26

And a spooky mushroom makes you do this.

0:43:270:43:30

That's brilliant. I'll leave you to it.

0:43:300:43:32

-Whatever it is you're doing, it looks awesome.

-Thanks.

0:43:320:43:35

-I can't wait to see the mysterious mushroom.

-Thank you very much.

-All right, darling. Mad.

0:43:350:43:41

-Completely different planet, when you think about it.

-Ma-ba-ba-baa. It's all a bit sharp.

0:43:410:43:46

It's the last day, how can you tell?

0:43:480:43:50

You know you're getting close to the end

0:43:500:43:52

when all the old fluffy stuff starts turning up, eh?

0:43:520:43:56

Lovely things coming through.

0:43:560:43:58

And it's time for Jock's moment of glory.

0:43:580:44:02

That's for you, darling, but you have to wear it. Promise?

0:44:020:44:04

It's exactly the right colour for your eyes.

0:44:040:44:08

-Look, you've got to wear it like this.

-I'm dead embarrassed.

0:44:080:44:12

THEY ALL LAUGH

0:44:120:44:14

You've got to fold it in half round there.

0:44:140:44:16

BUILDERS LAUGH AND CLAP

0:44:180:44:20

-So lovely.

-Thank you.

-It really suits you. You see?

0:44:200:44:25

'It's all very well, but he's got to carry on living and working round here once we've gone.

0:44:250:44:29

'I do worry sometimes.'

0:44:290:44:30

Going back to the office and explaining yourself,

0:44:300:44:33

-how have you been describing it?

-Well, it's much more frantic

0:44:330:44:36

and chaotic than it comes across on the telly, but there's just

0:44:360:44:39

so much work to get done in such a short space of time.

0:44:390:44:42

I'm sorry, we'll have to interrupt this interview.

0:44:420:44:44

I'm really sorry about this, but we've run out of tar again.

0:44:440:44:47

Can you make another phone call?

0:44:470:44:49

'This is the last thing we need.'

0:44:520:44:54

You all right for that? It's a bit last minute.

0:44:550:44:57

I'm going to go get the number, absolutely. Have you got the number?

0:44:570:45:00

Look at that. Not even a 'maybe'.

0:45:000:45:02

Not even, "Flipping heck, you'd be pushing it now."

0:45:020:45:05

Just 'yes'. Just 'yes'.

0:45:050:45:07

It's one tiny patch, right by the door.

0:45:070:45:09

But, you know what, I'm not even going to worry about it.

0:45:090:45:12

They say they can do it, so I believe them.

0:45:120:45:14

They'll get it done somehow.

0:45:140:45:16

Just nine days ago we took on a building

0:45:180:45:21

threatening the security of this extended family.

0:45:210:45:25

Cold, battered and cramped. It was a lead weight dragging everyone down.

0:45:250:45:30

Now...

0:45:310:45:34

Thanks to the efforts of around 300 local and not-so-local builders,

0:45:340:45:38

it's a place fit for a family of any size.

0:45:380:45:42

The hall has been completely refurbished.

0:45:420:45:45

A new floor, solar panels and renewed heating and insulation

0:45:450:45:48

will make sure this place is cosy and cheaper to run.

0:45:480:45:53

The windows even have a special lining

0:45:530:45:55

that reflects heat back into the building.

0:45:550:45:58

The under fives have a safe place to play,

0:45:580:46:00

where they can see and be seen.

0:46:000:46:02

The children now have a top-of-the-range sensory room

0:46:020:46:05

to chill and take time out.

0:46:050:46:08

The art room has been transformed

0:46:080:46:10

so that those imaginations can run riot once again.

0:46:100:46:14

The office has been moved, there's new wiring, lighting and fencing.

0:46:170:46:21

The old kitchen wall's been knocked through

0:46:220:46:25

to make the ultimate in luxury cooking spaces,

0:46:250:46:27

complete with wheelchair-friendly surfaces and units.

0:46:270:46:31

Everyone can take part.

0:46:310:46:33

New French windows lead to a new covered cafe area.

0:46:330:46:36

Respite can be luxurious too.

0:46:360:46:39

And that's just half the story.

0:46:400:46:42

Because, outside, the cycleways have been upgraded with new tarmac

0:46:420:46:46

and thousands of beautifully fitted bricks as edging.

0:46:460:46:49

New bikes will mean even more children and adults can have a go.

0:46:490:46:53

There are traffic lights, yes, traffic lights to play with.

0:46:540:46:58

The big swing has been renovated and now has feet

0:46:580:47:01

and a ramp to make it wheelchair friendly.

0:47:010:47:03

There's a brand-new Wendy house.

0:47:030:47:05

A dome adds another outdoor, all-weather play space.

0:47:050:47:08

With a climbing frame, sandpit, multicoloured water feature,

0:47:080:47:14

sensory garden and music garden, this place is a treasure trove,

0:47:140:47:18

waiting for explorers.

0:47:180:47:21

A fort, with rope features, provides a place to let off steam.

0:47:210:47:25

We've even got flagpoles. Are you getting the message?

0:47:250:47:28

There is so much!

0:47:280:47:30

At last, it's time for Gillian and her friends to have their home back.

0:47:320:47:38

-How important is this place to you?

-It's huge.

0:47:380:47:42

It's what keeps us all going. It's what keeps us all sane.

0:47:420:47:47

-It's what keeps our families together.

-It's a complete lifeline.

0:47:470:47:51

-OK. Are you ready?

-Yeah.

0:47:510:47:55

Open your eyes.

0:47:550:47:57

Oh, my God!

0:47:570:47:59

-I don't recognise the place, this is unbelievable!

-It's fantastic!

0:48:020:48:10

Oh, my God, it's amazing!

0:48:100:48:12

He's going to be in heaven.

0:48:130:48:15

They're all going to be in heaven.

0:48:150:48:17

-This is great.

-I can't believe it.

0:48:210:48:25

I can't believe it.

0:48:250:48:26

The place has been insulated, the central heating system has been changed and doubled up

0:48:280:48:32

to make it more efficient, so it doesn't cost so much to run.

0:48:320:48:35

There's a new screen been put in above it to keep the heat in

0:48:350:48:37

and stop it going out the dome.

0:48:370:48:39

From that point of view, it's going to be cheaper to run.

0:48:390:48:42

-That's fantastic.

-But it's warmer, at the same time.

0:48:420:48:44

It is, it's glorious. Absolutely glorious.

0:48:440:48:48

It looks, as well, like it's for children.

0:48:480:48:50

It's for them, they're going to come in and go, "This is for me."

0:48:500:48:53

-They know it's for them.

-For the wee ones.

0:48:530:48:56

She's going to be in heaven.

0:48:560:48:59

We decided to separate off, for the little ones,

0:48:590:49:02

just so they aren't being run into by the big ones.

0:49:020:49:05

She needs to be able to see me, that was the problem before.

0:49:050:49:08

She was in a different room. She needs to be able to see me

0:49:080:49:10

and know I'm still here, I haven't abandoned her or anything.

0:49:100:49:13

When we came to see you in the school the other day,

0:49:130:49:15

when you were trying to manage Jamie

0:49:150:49:17

basically not killing his little sister accidentally,

0:49:170:49:21

we could see that, so we knew that you had to be able to see them.

0:49:210:49:24

But, also, that we needed that little separation.

0:49:240:49:26

That's the sensory room, there. Do you want to see the sensory room?

0:49:260:49:30

Yes, please.

0:49:300:49:32

-This is great.

-Oh, my goodness.

0:49:380:49:39

At the moment, the room is currently blue.

0:49:390:49:43

But, if you wanted to change it, you could.

0:49:430:49:46

-That did that?!

-No?

0:49:460:49:49

-PA:

-Green. Orange.

0:49:490:49:53

-This is just out of this world.

-It is absolutely beautiful.

0:49:530:49:57

I never expected it to be so fantastic.

0:49:570:50:00

-OK, what shall we see next? The art room?

-Yes, OK.

0:50:000:50:04

-Oh, my goodness.

-Oh, my goodness!

0:50:070:50:11

This is bigger! Definitely bigger.

0:50:110:50:15

You'd think, wouldn't you? In fact, we kept it the same size.

0:50:150:50:18

But it was all a bit old and knackered,

0:50:180:50:19

so we ripped everything out and we've got brand-new units,

0:50:190:50:22

closable ones at that end, children accessible ones at this end.

0:50:220:50:26

So you can decide what is out for them to get themselves

0:50:260:50:28

and what you actually put away.

0:50:280:50:30

Obviously, a big space for them to play, easy to clean.

0:50:300:50:33

Low-level and high-level sinks, so the little ones can get at it, too.

0:50:330:50:38

That's fantastic. Erin used to sit on the chair.

0:50:380:50:42

She'll love it, absolutely love it.

0:50:420:50:44

She's just going to lose herself in here.

0:50:440:50:46

Did you make some beds? Because we'll be living here 24 hours a day.

0:50:460:50:50

Definitely.

0:50:500:50:52

You can imagine, with the storage, office space and other things,

0:50:520:50:55

we had to close down that little kitchen that you had.

0:50:550:50:59

We haven't been able to expand it very much.

0:50:590:51:02

It is just... It's a good one, but it's not...

0:51:020:51:05

Well, come and have a look. That's probably easier.

0:51:050:51:07

You are joking me! You're joking me! Look at this. Look at this!

0:51:180:51:21

Oh, my God!

0:51:220:51:24

It's like a posh house. It's a posh house.

0:51:260:51:32

-It is, exactly.

-I can't believe it, I actually can't believe it,

0:51:320:51:35

I can't take it in. It's beautiful.

0:51:350:51:37

Look, the sink's low so Erin will be able to wash her hands

0:51:390:51:42

without having to stand on the chair.

0:51:420:51:45

Is it real?!

0:51:450:51:47

Grill-microwave, this is a very high-end grill-microwave.

0:51:470:51:52

Oven for cooking. Freezer.

0:51:520:51:54

And fridge.

0:51:560:51:58

-Giant fridge.

-The size of it is fantastic.

0:51:590:52:02

I noticed that you noticed that this is low-level.

0:52:020:52:04

Of course, it depends on who's using it.

0:52:050:52:08

If I actually show you, there's a button here.

0:52:080:52:11

So you can change this to whatever height you need.

0:52:130:52:16

To suit whoever's using it.

0:52:160:52:18

Sink and hob, no matter what size, age or whatever you are.

0:52:180:52:21

That's incredible!

0:52:210:52:23

You then think it's frustrating cos you can't reach the top cupboards.

0:52:250:52:28

Only, interestingly, you actually can reach the top cupboards.

0:52:280:52:33

-It's like Doctor Who!

-That's unbelievable.

0:52:330:52:37

Oh, my goodness. They're going to love it.

0:52:370:52:41

This is not only for the children and young adults with disability,

0:52:410:52:44

this is very much, as you made very clear to me over the past few days,

0:52:440:52:48

respite area, where you can get just half an hour to take a breather.

0:52:480:52:53

Have a cup of coffee, sit and have a chat.

0:52:530:52:55

We've made use of the ugly little bit out the back, here.

0:52:550:52:58

So, if you come with me.

0:52:580:53:00

-Oh, my God.

-Oh, God.

0:53:030:53:07

-Oh, my God.

-It's lovely.

0:53:070:53:09

-Three seats, have yourself a seat.

-Civilisation!

0:53:090:53:13

How have we done so far?

0:53:130:53:15

-It's amazing.

-Couldn't have...

0:53:150:53:19

Never, never dreamed...

0:53:190:53:20

When we say it's amazing, it's amazing, we mean more!

0:53:200:53:23

It's just... This is just wow.

0:53:230:53:27

It's mind-blowing. I just can't put it into words.

0:53:270:53:31

My imagination couldn't reach this far.

0:53:310:53:34

And I've got one heck of an imagination!

0:53:340:53:37

Walk forward, please. Walk forward, walk forward.

0:53:410:53:44

Look up.

0:53:440:53:46

Oh, my goodness!

0:53:470:53:49

THEY ALL CHATTER EXCITEDLY

0:53:490:53:52

Oh, my goodness.

0:53:570:53:59

Oh, my goodness.

0:53:590:54:02

We've got a door!

0:54:030:54:05

Traffic lights!

0:54:110:54:12

-Let's go.

-Green man, safe to cross.

0:54:170:54:20

Come and have a look around. We're losing track of people.

0:54:250:54:28

Look, and there's a sign. What does that sign say?

0:54:300:54:32

HMS Pudsey, look. Magical.

0:54:370:54:40

-We could have discos outside, with a barbecue.

-Can you imagine?

0:54:420:54:49

Thank you, Jamie.

0:54:540:54:56

I can't thank you enough.

0:54:560:54:58

I can't thank everybody enough for this fantastic place.

0:54:580:55:02

We kind of knew that there were bits of it that were here already.

0:55:020:55:06

But it's just been improved...tremendously.

0:55:060:55:10

Tremendously. And he wants to be a lollipop man. So happy.

0:55:100:55:15

We knew stuff was happening, but...

0:55:170:55:19

And the thing is, The Yard's feel that it had,

0:55:200:55:25

its whole ethos and everything, you've kept it all.

0:55:250:55:28

Oh, it's just great.

0:55:280:55:30

-How do you feel about the people that did this?

-Just amazing.

0:55:330:55:37

They have to come back and let us show them how appreciative we are.

0:55:370:55:41

-Well, they'll be here soon.

-Oh, gosh! Are they coming in now?

0:55:410:55:46

It'd be good to see them.

0:55:460:55:48

And here they come, over 300 of them!

0:55:490:55:53

APPLAUSE

0:55:530:55:55

The staff that work here at The Yard have a reputation

0:56:060:56:10

for turning the mundane into the magical.

0:56:100:56:12

But this transformation, in less than ten days,

0:56:120:56:18

is truly, truly in the world of make-believe.

0:56:180:56:21

So, somewhere in there, I know there was lots of blood, sweat and tears,

0:56:210:56:26

but there must be a magic wand somewhere.

0:56:260:56:30

A lot of our children and young people have very complex needs

0:56:300:56:33

and what we try and do is make life more fun and more fulfilling

0:56:330:56:37

for each and every one of those families.

0:56:370:56:40

And we do that because we really care.

0:56:400:56:44

And I think what everybody here has proved is that you care, too.

0:56:440:56:51

For me, and all of my team, that is truly uplifting.

0:56:510:56:56

So, we truly, truly could not have wished for a more wonderful present.

0:56:560:57:01

So, thank you. Everybody has to cheer!

0:57:010:57:04

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:57:040:57:05

# My tears are dryin'

0:57:100:57:16

# My tears are dryin'... #

0:57:160:57:19

I asked one of the builders here the other day

0:57:190:57:21

who was in for several thousand pounds of his own money,

0:57:210:57:24

as well as his time, why he was so committed to this,

0:57:240:57:27

given that he didn't have any children that came here

0:57:270:57:29

and didn't even know anybody who came here.

0:57:290:57:31

He said, "Because for the next 10, 20 years, I'll be able to drive past

0:57:310:57:35

"this place and say, I had something to do with that."

0:57:350:57:39

And, of course, if you've ever given to Children In Need,

0:57:390:57:42

you've got something to do with this as well.

0:57:420:57:44

I mean, the people that have done the work here

0:57:440:57:47

for the last nine days have put more than generosity into this.

0:57:470:57:51

They've poured their hearts and souls into it.

0:57:510:57:54

Inspirational, isn't it?

0:57:540:57:56

# Thank you, thank you... #

0:57:560:57:59

-Thank you.

-Thank you.
