The land I'm stood on used to be a thriving market town

0:00:010:00:03

in the late 1700s. But then, within just a few short years,

0:00:030:00:07

all trace of the town and its buildings were completely gone.

0:00:070:00:12

So what happened to the town and where did all the people go?

0:00:120:00:16

I'll reveal all in just a few moments.

0:00:160:00:18

Today, I'm helping two teachers leave their city life behind

0:00:490:00:52

to find a rural home in the countryside.

0:00:520:00:55

And we show them some unexpected treats.

0:00:550:00:58

-I could easily work with this.

-Could you?

-Oh, yes.

0:00:580:01:01

Then there's our mystery house,

0:01:010:01:03

which helps our buyers reach new heights.

0:01:030:01:06

-I feel quite high.

-We are high, it's a good view.

0:01:060:01:09

Today I'm in Dorset

0:01:120:01:13

on what used to be the site of the market town of Milton.

0:01:130:01:17

Back in around 1770, this would have been a bustling place

0:01:170:01:21

with shops, wealthy traders, almshouses, a pub.

0:01:210:01:25

There was even a grammar school.

0:01:250:01:28

But then along came a certain Joseph Damer,

0:01:280:01:31

who was later to become the first Earl of Dorchester.

0:01:310:01:34

As a rather important and powerful man,

0:01:340:01:36

he decided that the town of Milton

0:01:360:01:39

was obscuring his view from his own house, Milton Abbey, over there.

0:01:390:01:43

So, in a rather savage bit of town planning,

0:01:430:01:46

he destroyed or demolished Milton altogether.

0:01:460:01:49

I'm happy to say the residents of Milton were rehoused

0:01:490:01:53

about a mile away in Milton Abbas, which is still there.

0:01:530:01:57

It's funny. People will do anything for a view, won't they?

0:01:570:02:00

On the south coast of England,

0:02:050:02:06

Dorset is bordered by Hampshire to the east,

0:02:060:02:09

Wiltshire to the north and Somerset to the west.

0:02:090:02:12

A major draw for the county's visitors is the sweeping Jurassic coastline

0:02:120:02:16

that stretches all the way from Dorset to East Devon.

0:02:160:02:20

It's a coastline dotted with stunning bays like this one at Lulworth Cove.

0:02:200:02:25

Dorset is the birthplace of writer Thomas Hardy,

0:02:250:02:28

and the beautiful, pastoral countryside that filled his novels

0:02:280:02:32

can still be found here today. More than half of the county

0:02:320:02:35

is classified as an area of outstanding natural beauty,

0:02:350:02:39

with the landscape mix of rolling hillsides and chalky downland.

0:02:390:02:42

Indeed, it's on one such section of downland

0:02:420:02:45

that one of Dorset's most iconic ancient landmarks,

0:02:450:02:48

the Cerne Abbas Giant, takes centre stage.

0:02:480:02:51

The rural retreat has long been an aspiration

0:02:560:03:00

held by city dwellers in search for a piece of the good life.

0:03:000:03:03

Retiring out of the city is no new phenomenon.

0:03:030:03:06

In fact, it's been popular since the 1920s,

0:03:060:03:08

when people used the national railway network

0:03:080:03:12

to relocate to well-serviced towns and villages

0:03:120:03:15

like those found here in Dorset.

0:03:150:03:17

And with its stunning coastline and beautiful countryside,

0:03:170:03:20

Dorset is now the second most popular county to retire to.

0:03:200:03:23

And, of course, that's reflected in its property values.

0:03:230:03:27

The average cost of a detached house here is £320,000.

0:03:270:03:32

That's an incredible £70,000 above the national figure.

0:03:320:03:35

So with those rather steamy property values in mind,

0:03:350:03:38

take a look at the selection of properties

0:03:380:03:40

that we found currently on the market here.

0:03:400:03:43

For £395,000, this traditional four bedroomed house in Beaminster

0:03:430:03:47

could be yours.

0:03:470:03:49

There are impressive brick feature fireplaces

0:03:490:03:51

in the ample sitting room and dining room.

0:03:510:03:54

And the house has wonderful views over the West Dorset countryside.

0:03:540:03:58

Or there's this single-storey colonial-style property

0:04:000:04:04

in Southover, for £550,000.

0:04:040:04:06

This double height sitting room opens onto a conservatory,

0:04:060:04:09

and there's plenty of entertaining space in the sizeable dining room.

0:04:090:04:14

Outside features a well-established garden

0:04:140:04:16

with around 4.5 acres of additional land.

0:04:160:04:19

If your pockets are deep enough

0:04:200:04:22

and you'd like something truly spectacular,

0:04:220:04:25

there's this 17th-entury four-bedroom house in Hook

0:04:250:04:27

for £715,000.

0:04:270:04:30

The property has a wealth of period features,

0:04:300:04:33

including an inglenook fireplace in the dining room

0:04:330:04:35

and exposed beams in the sitting room.

0:04:350:04:39

Time to meet today's buyers,

0:04:390:04:41

and find out why they are ready to Escape To The Country.

0:04:410:04:44

Meet Wendy, a teacher who's soon to retire, and her husband, Rick,

0:04:460:04:49

a former teacher who's already taken the plunge.

0:04:490:04:52

Having spent their entire working lives in London,

0:04:520:04:54

they're ready to leave the busy streets behind

0:04:540:04:58

for a slice of peace and tranquillity in the West Country.

0:04:580:05:01

We'd like to move to Dorset. It's a really nice county.

0:05:010:05:05

But I would really like to move because I feel like I've done London.

0:05:050:05:09

I want some space. I don't actually want to go into retirement,

0:05:090:05:12

I want to start something different in a different place.

0:05:120:05:15

We've always said we'd move, haven't we, when we retired.

0:05:150:05:17

But we do need more space.

0:05:170:05:20

We need a nice place for our children to come and stay.

0:05:200:05:24

Our buyers have been living in this three-bedroom house

0:05:240:05:28

in Stoke Newington in London for 11 years.

0:05:280:05:30

And even though their two daughters have flown the nest,

0:05:300:05:33

they're still longing for more space

0:05:330:05:35

and the chance to enjoy their wide range of hobbies.

0:05:350:05:39

I'm really interested in cooking.

0:05:390:05:40

And fishing and boats and playing my guitar

0:05:400:05:43

and keeping animals and gardening.

0:05:430:05:46

I like the idea of being able to go and pick stuff out of the garden,

0:05:460:05:49

bring it in and cook with it and eat.

0:05:490:05:52

I want to build an outside kitchen with a barbecue stove.

0:05:520:05:56

Rick and Wendy have a real passion for the British coast,

0:05:560:05:59

and it's a key factor for the location of their new home.

0:05:590:06:02

Not really too far from the sea, 10 miles inland would be OK,

0:06:020:06:05

because I would like access to a place to slip a boat in.

0:06:050:06:09

Or a mooring would be fantastic obviously.

0:06:090:06:12

So a mooring would help keep Rick smiling,

0:06:120:06:15

but there are plenty of other requirements on the wish list.

0:06:150:06:19

Ideally, we'd like a detached house with lots and lots of space.

0:06:190:06:24

A really nice, characterful kitchen.

0:06:240:06:28

Minimum of three bedrooms, so that when the girls come

0:06:280:06:30

there's somewhere to stay with their families.

0:06:300:06:33

And a large bathroom.

0:06:330:06:36

Rock god Rick would also like a special room to let his hair down.

0:06:360:06:41

Certainly in the new house,

0:06:410:06:42

I'd love a place where I can set up all the equipment

0:06:420:06:44

and have it specifically as a music room,

0:06:440:06:47

for all the guitars and amplification.

0:06:470:06:50

Only one more thing to nail down, and that's the finances.

0:06:500:06:55

Our maximum budget is £600,000.

0:06:550:06:59

To paraphrase Samuel Johnson,

0:07:040:07:06

when you're tired of London, you're tired of life.

0:07:060:07:09

But that's patently not true with Wendy and Rick.

0:07:090:07:11

They see a move here to the Dorset countryside as a fresh challenge.

0:07:110:07:15

Hoping for, perhaps, a new lease of life.

0:07:150:07:18

So, whilst they may have some trepidation

0:07:180:07:20

about leaving the big city of London behind,

0:07:200:07:23

I'm hoping a few days in this beautiful countryside

0:07:230:07:27

will put any fears to rest for good.

0:07:270:07:29

Rick and Wendy want to be within striking distance

0:07:330:07:36

of the Dorset coast,

0:07:360:07:37

so we're focusing today's search within a 20-mile radius

0:07:370:07:40

of the coastal town of Poole in the east of the county.

0:07:400:07:44

We've lined up some stunning properties for them to see

0:07:440:07:47

and, as usual, they'll have to guess the price before I reveal it.

0:07:470:07:50

Our last property is of course the mystery house,

0:07:500:07:53

and I'm hoping it will make our buyers embrace the high life.

0:07:530:07:57

So, let's talk about what you're after here.

0:07:570:07:59

First of all, let's talk about your lifestyle.

0:07:590:08:03

I just want to start following the interests I have already

0:08:030:08:06

and expanding them, really.

0:08:060:08:08

OK, it looks like we're looking for

0:08:080:08:10

a property with a fair bit of outside space.

0:08:100:08:13

Have you got an idea of how much space you'd want?

0:08:130:08:15

Is it a garden, is it land?

0:08:150:08:17

The thought of actually making a small area as an allotment

0:08:170:08:21

to grow root vegetables like potatoes and onions

0:08:210:08:25

would be fantastic, and to incorporate that into my cooking.

0:08:250:08:28

What I really aspire to is to actually create

0:08:280:08:30

an eatery in the garden, like an outside extension to the kitchen.

0:08:300:08:35

What about style of property? You live in a Victorian house just now.

0:08:350:08:39

We'd like light and to be able to look out of the window at a view,

0:08:390:08:42

perhaps, like this. Possibly.

0:08:420:08:44

Yeah, OK.

0:08:440:08:46

We've got two houses to look at today. Two very different houses.

0:08:460:08:49

-Mm.

-Let's see how we get on.

0:08:490:08:51

Rick and Wendy have a budget of £600,000

0:08:540:08:58

and would like a detached house with plenty of space.

0:08:580:09:01

They want a minimum of three bedrooms

0:09:010:09:03

so their family can come and visit, and Wendy is keen on country views.

0:09:030:09:08

Rick, well, he'd love a garden big enough to grow his own produce.

0:09:080:09:12

For our first house, I'm taking them to the much sought-after village of Tarrant Monkton.

0:09:220:09:27

It's within easy reach of the coast and just 19 miles away from Poole.

0:09:270:09:31

It's no wonder this picture-postcard village is so popular.

0:09:310:09:35

There are a number of pretty thatched houses

0:09:350:09:37

and a charming 14th-century church.

0:09:370:09:40

Amenities include a farm shop and a pub.

0:09:400:09:44

The house I'm showing Rick and Wendy is an attractive period property

0:09:440:09:47

which once played an important part in the local community.

0:09:470:09:50

So then, here we are, property number one.

0:09:540:09:56

Come right round, we'll go in the front garden.

0:09:560:09:58

What's your first impressions of this house, then?

0:09:580:10:02

I really like it.

0:10:020:10:04

-Now, there's a bit of history attached to this place.

-That's good.

0:10:040:10:07

Parts of this property date back to the 18th century.

0:10:070:10:10

-It was a baker.

-Oh, wow!

0:10:100:10:12

It was a post office and then a general store, if you like.

0:10:120:10:18

-It's very pretty. It's a pretty house.

-Good.

0:10:180:10:20

-So good first impressions, then?

-Hmm, yeah.

-Yeah, yeah.

-OK.

0:10:200:10:23

Let's get inside.

0:10:230:10:26

Well, we're off to a good start. Let's see if we can build on that.

0:10:260:10:30

Righty-ho! Let's come, first of all, into the living room.

0:10:310:10:36

Hopefully, not a bad size, you'll agree?

0:10:360:10:39

-What do you think of the style?

-I like it. I really like it.

0:10:390:10:42

-Yeah.

-I like the wooden floors, we've always liked wooden floors.

0:10:420:10:45

-Really nice.

-And proper woodburning stove.

0:10:450:10:48

-That's important, that's really important.

-Fantastic.

0:10:480:10:51

You did say you wanted a light...

0:10:510:10:53

-Yes.

-There's plenty of windows.

0:10:530:10:56

Good. These are great reactions.

0:10:560:10:59

I mean, it's difficult, you live in a Victorian house.

0:10:590:11:02

-Yeah.

-This is a country house now.

-It's a country house.

0:11:020:11:05

It certainly feels that way.

0:11:050:11:07

-Is that your style? Is that what you're hoping to find?

-Yes, yes.

0:11:070:11:10

-Definitely.

-It gives a sense of more space.

0:11:100:11:12

Good, all right.

0:11:120:11:13

Well, look, first room sounds like a resounding success to me,

0:11:130:11:17

but you've also got two other reception rooms.

0:11:170:11:19

You've got another small study to the side of that fireplace

0:11:190:11:22

-and a great-size dining room which feeds off the kitchen just here.

-OK.

0:11:220:11:27

So let's have a look at that.

0:11:270:11:30

-Now, Rick, I know the kitchen is your domain.

-Yeah.

0:11:310:11:35

What do we think?

0:11:370:11:39

Well, first appearances, great.

0:11:390:11:40

And I like this central island for preparing food.

0:11:400:11:43

-That's what I've always wanted.

-OK.

-Somewhere where you can prepare food

0:11:430:11:47

and people aren't in and out of cupboards around you.

0:11:470:11:49

Another great thing about this kitchen, it's just a cooking area.

0:11:490:11:53

You've got a really good-size utility just through that door there, that stable door,

0:11:530:11:57

-with a downstairs loo. So...

-Yeah.

0:11:570:12:01

-And the floors...

-There's a nice light space as well.

0:12:010:12:03

It feels part of the garden which is something I really like.

0:12:030:12:06

-Feels like you're almost in the garden.

-Yeah.

0:12:060:12:08

I think there's all sorts of possibilities in here.

0:12:080:12:11

I mean, it's a really nice kitchen, there's no doubt about that.

0:12:110:12:14

-I think it feels like a lived-in, nice house so far.

-It does, yeah.

0:12:140:12:19

Let's have a look at one of the bedrooms. Just this way.

0:12:190:12:22

Upstairs, there are four good-size double bedrooms.

0:12:260:12:30

Two of them are dual-aspect, so there's plenty of light.

0:12:300:12:33

There's also a large family bathroom with a separate shower cubicle,

0:12:330:12:36

but I'm taking them to where THEY might sleep.

0:12:360:12:39

Now, then, this is the master bedroom.

0:12:390:12:43

-Quirky in its shape, certainly.

-Yeah, very unusual shape!

0:12:430:12:47

Now, this is the master bedroom because we've got

0:12:470:12:48

-a bit of extra storage here and you've got an en suite.

-Mm.

0:12:480:12:52

-Oh, that's good, yeah.

-Handy.

-Handy, yes.

0:12:520:12:56

But that's actually a lovely view from the bedroom window.

0:12:560:12:59

-I can imagine it being a really cosy room to be in.

-This is beautiful to look out of.

0:12:590:13:03

-That's very cottagey and pretty, that window.

-Yeah.

-There you go.

0:13:030:13:06

-You can make it a proper feature and really brighten up this room.

-Good.

0:13:060:13:10

There's lots of potential upstairs,

0:13:100:13:12

but it's the outside of this house that I'm really excited about

0:13:120:13:15

as it contains a surprise that I think Rick will really like.

0:13:150:13:20

So, outside, another option for you,

0:13:200:13:23

if you don't want to be playing your musical instruments IN the house,

0:13:230:13:26

or Wendy, if you don't want him to,

0:13:260:13:28

you've got a good-size garage here, a double garage with power,

0:13:280:13:31

but also a ready-converted loft

0:13:310:13:33

which you could make into a great music studio.

0:13:330:13:37

-That certainly gives us potentials, doesn't it?

-Doesn't it, just?

0:13:370:13:40

Now, that's the music side of it.

0:13:400:13:43

Now, I know you told me about your desire

0:13:430:13:45

-for maybe some sort of alfresco-type cooking and dining.

-Yeah.

-Yeah.

0:13:450:13:49

They've got a sort of griddle at the back.

0:13:490:13:52

It's almost a gazebo, but you could make that more of a permanent structure.

0:13:520:13:56

-You could. You could develop that. Definitely.

-Good.

0:13:560:14:00

So, decent-size garden,

0:14:000:14:02

four-bedroom house with that double garage in a lovely little village.

0:14:020:14:08

How much do you think this place is on the market for?

0:14:080:14:12

Rick, let's have you first, shall we?

0:14:120:14:14

-550,000.

-OK.

0:14:140:14:16

-What do you think, Wendy?

-Um, I think about 570.

-OK.

0:14:160:14:22

-Well, this house is on the market for offers around £595,000.

-595.

0:14:220:14:28

-No big surprises.

-No.

0:14:280:14:30

There's a lot of the house that you haven't yet seen, so go back inside

0:14:300:14:34

and I'll catch you in about 20 minutes or so. All right?

0:14:340:14:36

-OK.

-Great, we'll do that. Thanks.

0:14:360:14:38

As I said, tentatively quite positive.

0:14:380:14:42

There's a lot for them to see here

0:14:420:14:43

but, I think, also, everything they've asked for.

0:14:430:14:47

Pretty good start.

0:14:470:14:49

So, for offers around £595,000,

0:14:490:14:52

this characterful house meets many of Rick and Wendy's demands.

0:14:520:14:57

It has a large kitchen with a central island,

0:14:570:15:00

there are four bedrooms,

0:15:000:15:01

so ample room for all the family to come and stay,

0:15:010:15:04

and there's even an alfresco cooking area in the garden.

0:15:040:15:07

Plus, a double garage that could work as a music room for Rick.

0:15:070:15:12

This could be a good place to store my guitars, even, as well.

0:15:120:15:15

-It could be, yeah.

-Someone obviously plays in here.

0:15:150:15:18

I think it could be a really lovely home for us

0:15:180:15:21

and a lovely place for our children to come and visit and stay.

0:15:210:15:24

I think the house was really, really interesting in a lot of ways.

0:15:240:15:29

It had a lot of the things that I really like about a house. Loads of potential.

0:15:290:15:33

-All done inside?

-Yes, yes, thanks.

-Good. OK, well, onward and upward!

0:15:350:15:40

Just this way.

0:15:400:15:42

Rick and Wendy's move to Dorset

0:15:510:15:53

is all about getting closer to the coast,

0:15:530:15:55

especially as Rick wants to do more sailing.

0:15:550:15:58

So, we sent them off to explore the maritime town of Poole,

0:15:580:16:02

which could be perfect for mooring Rick's boat.

0:16:020:16:06

A busy port from the 13th century, thanks largely to its wool trade,

0:16:060:16:10

Poole's importance to the region steadily grew,

0:16:100:16:13

and by the mid-19th century,

0:16:130:16:15

90% of the local population were employed in maritime activities.

0:16:150:16:20

Today, the harbour and bay are popular areas for water sports

0:16:200:16:23

such as windsurfing, water-skiing, and sailing.

0:16:230:16:27

Within Poole Harbour there are six islands, the largest being Brownsea,

0:16:270:16:31

which is an important National Trust nature reserve.

0:16:310:16:34

It's a protected Site of Special Scientific Interest

0:16:340:16:38

and home to a variety of rare birds and animals.

0:16:380:16:41

Head ranger Reuben Hawkwood

0:16:410:16:43

is taking Rick and Wendy out to spot some of the island's wildlife,

0:16:430:16:46

including the endangered red squirrel.

0:16:460:16:48

Almost extinct in southern England,

0:16:480:16:51

the red squirrel is one of the most important animals on Brownsea,

0:16:510:16:54

and thrives here thanks to the absence of the larger grey squirrel.

0:16:540:16:58

Indeed, there are currently over 200 of them on the island.

0:16:580:17:02

It was the greys that chased off the reds, wasn't it?

0:17:020:17:04

I've got to get that right, yeah.

0:17:040:17:06

The greys came over from America. They're bigger and stronger

0:17:060:17:10

and they can eat food earlier in the year than the reds can.

0:17:100:17:13

Also, they've got a virus called squirrel pox which they carry.

0:17:130:17:17

It doesn't affect them, but it can kill the red squirrels.

0:17:170:17:20

Look, there it is! It's on the feeding station. Wow!

0:17:200:17:24

-Quite fast, aren't they?

-They're so much smaller.

0:17:240:17:26

I didn't realise how much smaller they were.

0:17:260:17:28

-It was completely on cue, that, wasn't it?

-That's fantastic, yes.

0:17:280:17:32

As a protected site, Brownsea is also a haven for a range of birds,

0:17:320:17:37

especially those that shelter here in the winter.

0:17:370:17:41

These rare species can best be viewed from one of the hides.

0:17:410:17:45

-Just have a look out there.

-What an amazing view! This is great.

0:17:450:17:49

-This is the first time I've been in a hide.

-Is it, really?

-It is, yes.

0:17:490:17:52

The birds we've got on here at the moment,

0:17:520:17:54

you can see we've got things like Black-tailed Godwits,

0:17:540:17:57

we've got various gulls out here.

0:17:570:17:59

The island is also the birthplace

0:17:590:18:01

of one of the biggest youth institutions in the world,

0:18:010:18:04

the Boy Scout movement.

0:18:040:18:06

Military officer Robert Baden-Powell held the first experimental scout camp here in 1907,

0:18:060:18:12

keen to instil independence

0:18:120:18:15

and a host of life skills to the British youth of the time.

0:18:150:18:18

This is a scout stone.

0:18:180:18:19

It commemorates the original camp

0:18:190:18:22

which Baden-Powell made on the island in 1907.

0:18:220:18:25

The first campsite is just down there.

0:18:250:18:27

There's a flagpole erected to show where it is.

0:18:270:18:30

So, what happened on that first camp?

0:18:300:18:33

Baden-Powell brought 20 boys over here,

0:18:330:18:35

split them into four groups, and they did various activities,

0:18:350:18:39

you know, making shelters, learning how to camp.

0:18:390:18:44

It's a fantastic place to camp. Really lovely.

0:18:440:18:46

Brownsea Island is just one of the many local attractions around Poole

0:18:460:18:51

that Rick and Wendy can experience when they move here.

0:18:510:18:55

But for now, it's time to continue scouting the rest of the Dorset countryside for their dream home.

0:18:550:19:00

For our second property, we've travelled just over 11 miles inland

0:19:030:19:08

close to the village of Witchampton, which has all necessary amenities

0:19:080:19:11

such as a church, a pub and a village shop.

0:19:110:19:15

A few miles down the road in Manswood is our second property - a thatched cottage

0:19:150:19:20

which stands alone in the stunning Dorset countryside.

0:19:200:19:24

So then, property number two.

0:19:240:19:26

-Very different.

-Very different, yes.

0:19:260:19:29

-Sweet.

-Sweet? Good!

-Chocolate-boxy.

0:19:290:19:33

Yes. Now, thatched cottages aren't everybody's cup of tea,

0:19:330:19:37

but you mentioned you like the idea of an older property,

0:19:370:19:41

-something with a bit of history.

-Yeah, and they're usually very old, aren't they?

0:19:410:19:44

-Parts of this property date back around 300 years.

-Oh, wow!

0:19:440:19:47

What about those views, though? Something else, aren't they?

0:19:470:19:50

Are you taking it all in, or...?

0:19:500:19:53

-I'm really interested in its layout just here.

-Yeah.

0:19:530:19:56

This hut and that little walkway corridor, it's really interesting.

0:19:560:19:59

-These sound again like pretty good reactions from the outside.

-Hmm.

0:19:590:20:04

Let's look inside.

0:20:040:20:06

Positive reactions so far. Let's see what they make of the interior.

0:20:070:20:11

-So, the first room is the kitchen.

-Oh. Look at the range cooker, Rick.

0:20:120:20:19

-You've always wanted one of those.

-The cooker looks really good, yeah.

0:20:190:20:22

-That's oil fired. It also provides the heating and hot water.

-Right.

0:20:220:20:26

The windows are in good positions, so when you're doing stuff,

0:20:260:20:29

you can just look out to the garden. I could easily work with this.

0:20:290:20:33

-Could you?

-Oh, yes.

-Yes.

0:20:330:20:34

-It looks practical.

-Hmm-mm.

-It looks really usable.

0:20:340:20:38

-Now, you have a downstairs bathroom with this house.

-OK, yeah.

0:20:380:20:42

Which is just behind you there. You can have a look at that later.

0:20:420:20:45

Now, there are two reception rooms. Let's have a quick peek in the first one,

0:20:450:20:48

-then we'll settle in the second, OK?

-OK.

0:20:480:20:50

Off the hallway is a light day room with views over the fields outside.

0:20:510:20:56

And there's a touch of deja vu

0:20:560:20:58

as this property also has a space set up as a music room.

0:20:580:21:01

Perfect for Rick.

0:21:010:21:03

But we'll take a look at room they could both relax in.

0:21:030:21:06

Right now, this is one of the two reception rooms.

0:21:060:21:10

Cosy, isn't it?

0:21:100:21:13

Yeah. It's a really nice feel about it.

0:21:130:21:16

I like this feature, the stairs in the corner, going up. Yeah.

0:21:160:21:20

Well, this property has two sets of stairs,

0:21:200:21:24

because it used to be two cottages.

0:21:240:21:26

Because on this side,

0:21:260:21:28

is the one reception room with the staircase going up.

0:21:280:21:30

-Yeah.

-And its own fireplace just here.

0:21:300:21:33

Oh, look at that wood burner, Rick. That's a really good one, isn't it?

0:21:330:21:37

Now, whilst you've got an impressive wood burner,

0:21:370:21:39

I think next door is a much more impressive fireplace.

0:21:390:21:42

-Which you might want to change around a little. Follow me.

-OK.

0:21:420:21:45

Right.

0:21:460:21:48

Now, you may need to mind your head, or certainly, guests might need to.

0:21:480:21:51

-OK. But I really... I love this reception room.

-Yeah.

0:21:510:21:55

-Look at the fire, Rick.

-This is a beautiful space.

0:21:550:21:59

And you can see some history here.

0:21:590:22:01

-You can see where they've been baking bread and cooking pies!

-Absolutely.

0:22:010:22:05

What do you think, Wendy? Do you feel the same?

0:22:050:22:07

I agree, yes. I think they are so characterful, both of these rooms.

0:22:070:22:12

-And so cosy.

-And another staircase. That's really nice, isn't it?

0:22:120:22:15

I love this idea of a staircase there

0:22:150:22:17

and a staircase going up there, two different parts of the house.

0:22:170:22:20

Well, the upstairs is very much in two parts, as you say, Wendy.

0:22:200:22:24

Because you go up here to a bedroom, a really good sized bedroom, OK?

0:22:240:22:30

And a smaller single.

0:22:300:22:32

Or the other side is, I would say, the master side of the property.

0:22:320:22:36

-Right.

-So you have the guest wing, and your wing.

-Yeah.

0:22:360:22:39

-Let's go into your wing, shall we?

-OK.

-Yeah.

0:22:390:22:41

-I really like this.

-It's great.

0:22:430:22:45

Great responses. Let's hope they feel the same in the main bedroom.

0:22:450:22:49

Now again, we've got cottage style dimensions and proportions.

0:22:490:22:55

I like the windows, they're really nice.

0:22:550:22:57

-You'd expect a bedroom like this in an old cottage.

-It's got character.

0:22:570:23:00

-That's the way it should be.

-The floorboards are good.

0:23:000:23:04

This room I think is the master because it has its own ensuite.

0:23:040:23:08

-Oh right, OK.

-A decent sized one, as well. Mmm.

0:23:080:23:11

So, three bedrooms, not huge, but with bags of character up here.

0:23:110:23:17

-Oh, yes.

-Isn't there?

-Lots.

-There is a lot of character.

0:23:170:23:20

I really like this room. It's lovely.

0:23:200:23:23

-Let's go outside and I'll show you the other garden.

-OK.

0:23:230:23:27

-But also, start to have a think about price.

-Prices, OK.

-OK, yes.

0:23:270:23:31

-Lead the way.

-OK.

0:23:310:23:33

Rick and Wendy wanted a lot of outdoor space,

0:23:340:23:36

and this property is flanked by gardens on either side of the house, totalling a third of an acre.

0:23:360:23:42

There's also a charming rustic stable block in the garden,

0:23:420:23:45

which is perfect for storage.

0:23:450:23:47

Now, as you can see, the garden just keeps on going.

0:23:470:23:51

And whilst you've got your greenhouse at the top of the garden,

0:23:510:23:53

-that is where the growing really takes place.

-Oh, yeah.

0:23:530:23:57

You've got plum trees, pear trees, cooking and eating apple trees.

0:23:570:24:01

-You've got the lot, haven't you?

-That's superb.

0:24:010:24:04

The idea of just being able to come out and pick your own fruit

0:24:040:24:08

and just have it whenever you want.

0:24:080:24:10

And a really quirky house to live in.

0:24:100:24:12

How much do you think this place is on the market for?

0:24:140:24:17

Well, I'll make one of my totally useless guesses again.

0:24:170:24:20

I think about probably 565.

0:24:200:24:24

-OK. 565.

-I have no idea.

0:24:240:24:26

I think probably about 585, to 590,

0:24:260:24:31

because it's got such a lot of land with it.

0:24:310:24:33

It's not a bad guess.

0:24:330:24:35

It's on the market for the same price as the first property.

0:24:350:24:38

This house is £595,000. Do you think that's fair?

0:24:380:24:42

-I think it's fair, because there's not a lot to do.

-No.

0:24:420:24:45

It's very well maintained and looked after.

0:24:450:24:48

I've got a feeling this has been sorted by the present owners.

0:24:480:24:52

-I think they've looked after it, loved it.

-Yes.

0:24:520:24:54

Bizarrely enough, I think there's more for you to go and discover now,

0:24:540:24:58

especially with the outside areas, than maybe in the first property.

0:24:580:25:02

-So why don't you go and do that?

-Yeah.

-You have the rest of the day,

0:25:020:25:05

so take your time. I'll catch you when you're finished.

0:25:050:25:07

-OK, then.

-All right?

-Yes.

-See you in a bit.

-Great.

-OK.

0:25:070:25:10

That really felt like it went well.

0:25:130:25:16

As I said, it's not a huge house. They're not after a huge house.

0:25:160:25:19

They're after something... especially with Rick,

0:25:190:25:22

something that keeps him busy. Something they can both enjoy.

0:25:220:25:26

I think this house could be just that.

0:25:260:25:29

Priced at £595,000, this delightful period cottage

0:25:320:25:36

offers two reception rooms,

0:25:360:25:37

a traditional kitchen, and four cottage-style bedrooms.

0:25:370:25:40

Outside, there's two large gardens,

0:25:420:25:44

with mature fruit trees,

0:25:440:25:45

and a stable block.

0:25:450:25:47

I think the gardens are amazing.

0:25:470:25:49

Really like the gardens.

0:25:490:25:51

The fact that it's in two parts, as well,

0:25:510:25:53

makes it very interesting.

0:25:530:25:55

The outbuildings, the old stables, we can do a lot with that.

0:25:550:25:58

It's quirky. It's unusual.

0:25:580:26:00

Even though the kitchen isn't big,

0:26:000:26:02

I can imagine working with that kitchen,

0:26:020:26:04

because the outside space is really big.

0:26:040:26:07

There's lots of chance for gardening,

0:26:070:26:10

storing, growing, all sorts of things.

0:26:100:26:13

I really like this house.

0:26:130:26:15

-All done, inside and out?

-BOTH: Yes.

0:26:170:26:19

-Lots to see in the garden, wasn't there?

-Lovely garden.

0:26:190:26:22

Great. Well, hopefully a good end to the day. Let's go.

0:26:220:26:25

As the sun sets over the tranquil Dorset countryside,

0:26:360:26:40

the first day of our property search comes to a close.

0:26:400:26:43

Rick and Wendy have spent their entire working lives

0:26:510:26:54

teaching in London.

0:26:540:26:55

But now they want to shut the door on the classroom for good,

0:26:550:26:58

and retire to the Dorset countryside.

0:26:580:27:00

We've had some great reaction to our fantastic properties so far.

0:27:000:27:05

I really like it. I like the wooden floors. We've always liked wooden floors.

0:27:050:27:09

But, coming up, can our mystery house solve the problem

0:27:090:27:12

of family Christmases?

0:27:120:27:14

-What would we use up here for?

-Hiding away from the relations?

0:27:140:27:18

And I get a little Zen on a Dorset beach.

0:27:180:27:21

I don't understand how this is done.

0:27:210:27:24

Now today, as you can see,

0:27:280:27:30

different weather conditions and different challenges,

0:27:300:27:32

as we're off to see the mystery house.

0:27:320:27:35

As ever, it's here to offer the house hunters something different.

0:27:350:27:39

This place, it certainly does.

0:27:390:27:43

I know Rick seems to like the history of properties, and the area.

0:27:430:27:46

This place has bags of history, and inside, for Wendy,

0:27:460:27:49

it's light and spacious.

0:27:490:27:51

Outside, it has all the land I think they're after.

0:27:510:27:54

Some of it, not so usable,

0:27:540:27:57

because, let's say, it's got one or two sitting tenants.

0:27:570:28:02

Today, as you know, it's the mystery house.

0:28:060:28:09

What would you like the mystery house to be today?

0:28:090:28:13

Perhaps near a river, near an estuary.

0:28:130:28:15

Yeah. Any ideas what it might be?

0:28:150:28:18

My guess would be a conversion of some sort,

0:28:210:28:25

like a church, or a barn.

0:28:250:28:27

-Or a boathouse.

-Or a windmill?

0:28:270:28:30

For our mystery property,

0:28:390:28:40

we've travelled to the village of East Stoke,

0:28:400:28:43

in the River Frome valley.

0:28:430:28:45

The nearest village for amenities is Wool,

0:28:450:28:47

which has a baker's shop, a post office, and a pub.

0:28:470:28:51

The house we're showing them is not detached, like they asked for,

0:28:510:28:54

as it's split into three dwellings.

0:28:540:28:56

But I can safely say it's a truly unique home.

0:28:560:29:00

Now, as mystery houses go, I think this one is a bit...

0:29:020:29:07

No, it's a lot of a gamble. So, here we are.

0:29:070:29:10

Well, well.

0:29:100:29:12

-Yes!

-It's not a house, it's a church.

0:29:120:29:15

It IS a church, which is now at least living accommodation.

0:29:150:29:19

Instantly, you can see the old workings, if you like, of a church,

0:29:190:29:24

and all that goes with it, or went with it. Does it bother you at all?

0:29:240:29:28

Erm...

0:29:280:29:29

I'm not sure. I'll have to think about it.

0:29:290:29:32

What do you think of the look of the place?

0:29:320:29:34

-I like it.

-It's amazing! Fantastic.

0:29:340:29:35

Come on, let's look inside.

0:29:350:29:37

So, there's a bit of trepidation,

0:29:370:29:40

but I'm sure the interior of this property will bowl them over,

0:29:400:29:43

especially as it has such an amazing tower.

0:29:430:29:46

First stop is the dining room.

0:29:460:29:49

Now, this part of the property is very much open plan.

0:29:490:29:53

It's got a bit of a flow to it.

0:29:530:29:55

Now, your kitchen, over there. Not a huge kitchen.

0:29:550:29:59

No, but such a big space.

0:29:590:30:01

I like it, actually.

0:30:010:30:03

-I like it. I like it.

-I love this space.

0:30:030:30:05

And look at all the lovely wood.

0:30:050:30:06

It was converted into living accommodation,

0:30:060:30:09

around 1990.

0:30:090:30:11

And the current owner

0:30:110:30:13

has done a lot of the work.

0:30:130:30:16

They've put extra floors in. They've made the studies here, as well.

0:30:160:30:19

You've got a nice study. You've got potential for music rooms.

0:30:190:30:23

You've also got a number of bedrooms.

0:30:230:30:24

You've got two on this floor. And a downstairs shower room and loo.

0:30:240:30:29

Now, you said you liked this, Rick,

0:30:290:30:31

even though it's got a fairly modest-sized kitchen.

0:30:310:30:34

It certainly pours into the dining room.

0:30:340:30:37

It doesn't matter, because it comes out.

0:30:370:30:39

It's great. We've always wanted a very big table.

0:30:390:30:41

And nice acoustics.

0:30:410:30:44

Ah, right. OK.

0:30:440:30:45

Sit in here playing the acoustic guitar.

0:30:450:30:48

Maybe you don't play your guitar down here,

0:30:480:30:50

cos I've just had an idea, now you've said that,

0:30:500:30:52

of where you could play your guitar.

0:30:520:30:54

It may go down well, it may not. Follow me.

0:30:540:30:57

We're heading to the sitting room on the first floor of the tower.

0:30:590:31:02

-Now, then.

-Oh, wow!

0:31:060:31:08

-Oh look.

-Another great space.

-Fabulous. Look at this.

0:31:090:31:13

Oh, the wood-burner!

0:31:140:31:16

Cos we thought they wouldn't be allowed to have one in here.

0:31:160:31:20

-I was surprised to see that, but it's great to have.

-It really is.

0:31:200:31:24

That's so important, so special. It's great.

0:31:240:31:26

With such a big room like this, as well,

0:31:260:31:29

you want a good central feature.

0:31:290:31:31

Notice, the windows that you like downstairs,

0:31:310:31:33

-this is the continuation of them up here.

-Oh, yes.

0:31:330:31:36

Now you mentioned somewhere to play your musical instrument.

0:31:360:31:39

You've got a minstrel gallery up there.

0:31:390:31:42

-You've got a whole other floor, like a mezzanine.

-Yes.

0:31:420:31:46

Again, the quirkiness continues here.

0:31:460:31:48

If you notice, a spiral staircase,

0:31:480:31:50

and that takes you all the way up to the tower,

0:31:500:31:52

where you have some fantastic views.

0:31:520:31:55

On a nicer, drier, less windy day.

0:31:550:31:58

If you wanted a master bedroom on this floor, you've got one.

0:31:580:32:00

You've got a door, just through here. I think you'll like this.

0:32:000:32:03

-Follow me.

-OK.

0:32:030:32:05

The characterful features are an unexpected treat for Rick and Wendy.

0:32:050:32:09

And there are more in the main bedroom.

0:32:090:32:12

What do you make of this one?

0:32:120:32:14

Oh.

0:32:140:32:16

-Nice bedroom.

-It's lovely. It's really lovely.

0:32:160:32:19

The windows are stained-glass windows everywhere, again.

0:32:190:32:24

Not a bad size, is it? You have room for a sofa in there.

0:32:240:32:26

Fitted wardrobes, and an ensuite bathroom behind there, as well,

0:32:260:32:30

so it's lovely.

0:32:300:32:31

Very good, yeah.

0:32:310:32:33

I like it. I like the whole church.

0:32:330:32:36

Wendy, you seem more taken with this property than maybe even Rick is.

0:32:360:32:39

Why is that?

0:32:390:32:41

I think it's the character. It's so unusual.

0:32:410:32:44

I was a bit lost for words when we came in.

0:32:440:32:46

The rooms are beautiful. I wasn't expecting to come into a church.

0:32:460:32:50

It's not often you see the inside of a church like this, is it?

0:32:500:32:55

-No, and the way...

-SHE LAUGHS

0:32:550:32:57

Inside, it seems to have gone down very, very well.

0:32:570:33:02

It's outside...

0:33:020:33:04

where I'm becoming a little nervous,

0:33:040:33:06

but let's see how we get on.

0:33:060:33:07

-OK, then.

-Lead the way.

-OK.

0:33:070:33:10

With the interior of this house being such a hit,

0:33:100:33:12

I hope they'll be prepared to be open-minded about the garden,

0:33:120:33:16

which is split between the three houses that make up the church.

0:33:160:33:20

You do get your own exclusive part of these grounds as a garden,

0:33:230:33:28

which is this bit, here.

0:33:280:33:31

-You see the hedgerow there, the nearest hedgerow.

-The tall one.

0:33:310:33:35

It goes to the path there, follow the path round

0:33:350:33:39

and then this hedgerow here.

0:33:390:33:42

Now, what about the gardening here because that's very important?

0:33:420:33:46

This was always going to be the gamble, I thought.

0:33:460:33:49

Are you allowed... because it's sacred ground?

0:33:490:33:52

You're allowed to dig down no more than 18 inches.

0:33:520:33:55

-Which is understandable.

-Yes.

0:33:550:33:57

-You see, with vegetables you can have raised beds.

-Yeah, quite.

0:33:570:34:01

You're not actually going into the ground at all. That's not a problem.

0:34:010:34:04

So from what you've seen, how much do you think this place is on the market for?

0:34:040:34:09

I have to be frank with you, I've never valued a church before.

0:34:090:34:13

Also, I think that a lot of people could be put off

0:34:130:34:16

by having graves in the garden.

0:34:160:34:20

Just from that point of view,

0:34:200:34:22

I think it's beautifully decked out inside but from that point of view,

0:34:220:34:27

-I think about 550.

-OK, Wendy?

0:34:270:34:30

I think possibly, because it's so well done, the conversion,

0:34:300:34:35

about 575?

0:34:350:34:37

I think they're fair comments you both make.

0:34:370:34:40

This house is on the market for £600,000.

0:34:400:34:44

This house is right at the top end of your budgets.

0:34:440:34:48

Why don't you go back into this mystery property?

0:34:480:34:51

It is so different, I'm sure it will take quite a lot of getting used to.

0:34:510:34:54

-If you fancy it, go into the tower.

-OK.

0:34:540:34:57

-All right.

-That will be fun.

0:34:570:35:00

-Good, you've got loads of time.

-We'll wave down to you.

0:35:000:35:04

Yeah, be careful, all right.

0:35:040:35:06

So, the mystery property was always going to be a gamble

0:35:080:35:11

and I was worried about the outside space.

0:35:110:35:14

But I think they've been so impressed by the quirky interiors

0:35:140:35:18

that this here that we're standing in isn't such a problem.

0:35:180:35:22

On the market for £600,000,

0:35:220:35:25

this converted church is a truly unique home.

0:35:250:35:29

It has a modern kitchen which flows off an attractive dining room,

0:35:290:35:33

three bedrooms and that amazing tower

0:35:330:35:36

that provides fantastic views of the open countryside.

0:35:360:35:40

There's a platform up here, Wen.

0:35:410:35:45

-Quite high.

-We are high, that's a good view.

0:35:450:35:48

What would we use up here for?

0:35:500:35:52

Hiding away from the relations?

0:35:520:35:55

As far as the garden's concerned, it hasn't got the growing space,

0:35:550:36:00

the storage space,

0:36:000:36:02

the chances to build a place to charcoal and sit out.

0:36:020:36:05

Maybe the outside space here is nothing near what I want,

0:36:050:36:10

but the inside space definitely is.

0:36:100:36:13

It's a beautiful house, beautiful conversion. Really lovely.

0:36:130:36:16

Something very unusual.

0:36:160:36:18

The open space is something that I really like.

0:36:180:36:21

-A bit breezy.

-It is!

-Did you get to the top?

0:36:240:36:28

Nearly, not on the roof.

0:36:280:36:29

Maybe another time.

0:36:290:36:31

Let's find you somewhere to mull this over, shall we?

0:36:310:36:34

This way.

0:36:340:36:35

95 miles of the Dorset to Devon landscape

0:36:480:36:50

is known as the Jurassic Coast.

0:36:500:36:52

It's the only place in the world where there's a continuous stretch

0:36:520:36:56

of rock formation that holds 185 million years of geological history.

0:36:560:37:02

It's this same rock formation that provides material

0:37:020:37:06

for these stunning sculptures created in Lyme Regis

0:37:060:37:08

by local artist Adrian Gray.

0:37:080:37:11

And no, it's neither an optical illusion nor very strong glue.

0:37:110:37:16

These stones are just simply balanced one on top of another.

0:37:160:37:20

That is amazing. It's...

0:37:200:37:23

It's almost as if there's a bolt put through both stones

0:37:250:37:28

but there's clearly no room for that.

0:37:280:37:31

Placing stones on top of each other is as old as mankind itself.

0:37:310:37:35

Our ancestors used it as a form of expression before they could speak

0:37:350:37:40

and stone totemic figures

0:37:400:37:42

served as friendly landmarks across barren landscapes.

0:37:420:37:45

Adrian, talk me through what we're trying to achieve here.

0:37:450:37:49

It's certainly a visual thing, isn't it?

0:37:490:37:51

What I want to do is create a sculpture

0:37:510:37:56

that looks like it's impossible.

0:37:560:37:59

You're doing that!

0:37:590:38:01

When it looks impossible,

0:38:010:38:02

it will have a certain magic to it or a certain sense of wonder.

0:38:020:38:06

When I achieve that, the sculpture, I feel, has a kind of presence.

0:38:060:38:10

The tricky thing I'm doing here is trying to balance the weight

0:38:100:38:13

against the friction that's going to stop it sliding down the stone.

0:38:130:38:17

You think about what you're doing and you create a sculpture

0:38:170:38:20

that seems to actually be completely wrong,

0:38:200:38:24

and it's that wrongness about it,

0:38:240:38:27

the fact that it looks like it shouldn't work,

0:38:270:38:30

creates absolutely something really new, I think.

0:38:300:38:33

That looks fantastic.

0:38:330:38:36

It looks amazing but it also...

0:38:360:38:38

Your eyes are saying that shouldn't be happening.

0:38:380:38:41

With Adrian's guidance,

0:38:420:38:44

I'm going to try my luck at achieving the seemingly impossible.

0:38:440:38:48

What you're trying to do is

0:38:480:38:50

bring yourself into that little point of contact

0:38:500:38:53

and just move it really slightly.

0:38:530:38:56

-You need to have a go and see what I'm talking about.

-OK.

0:38:560:39:00

You have to have hands still, body still.

0:39:000:39:02

Find that stillness inside of you.

0:39:020:39:04

It's a really, really meditative process.

0:39:040:39:07

I thought you were close then.

0:39:070:39:09

Oh! It felt so close!

0:39:150:39:16

It's like tai chi, this is.

0:39:190:39:22

I'm just getting a coffee.

0:39:240:39:26

HE LAUGHS

0:39:260:39:29

Oh! This is the hardest thing.

0:39:300:39:33

I'm going to have to admit defeat here and hand over to Adrian

0:39:330:39:37

and see if he can balance the stones that have beaten me.

0:39:370:39:40

Hope you're filming.

0:39:420:39:45

I'll pull away again.

0:39:470:39:49

You've done it!

0:39:520:39:54

Well, with these stones, you've either got it or you haven't

0:39:570:40:00

and I think I know which side of the fence I fall on.

0:40:000:40:03

Well, that's definitely something that's a lot harder than it looks.

0:40:050:40:09

Let's see if I fared any better with the three properties I've shown Rick and Wendy.

0:40:090:40:13

So, the big move from the smoke to Dorset.

0:40:180:40:22

After the properties we've shown you, what about the properties then?

0:40:220:40:26

Let's start at property number one.

0:40:260:40:29

Pretty good reactions from the start, weren't there?

0:40:290:40:31

I like the village as well that property was situated in.

0:40:310:40:34

It had the most interesting spaces.

0:40:350:40:37

I think there was a lot of work to be done, decoratively, throughout.

0:40:370:40:41

OK, that's one down.

0:40:410:40:43

The second property in the afternoon -

0:40:430:40:46

great reactions but very different.

0:40:460:40:48

This time it was all about the outside, wasn't it?

0:40:480:40:51

-Yeah. I like the garden.

-I knew you would.

0:40:510:40:54

It had lots going on in the garden,

0:40:540:40:56

there was plenty of food growing, which I liked.

0:40:560:40:58

It was well kitted out, the second house.

0:40:580:41:01

-It had the range.

-It had the range, which I know you're keen on.

0:41:010:41:04

It had views over fields from the kitchen which was also really nice.

0:41:040:41:07

So today, we're off to see the mystery house.

0:41:070:41:10

What were your thoughts when you first got there?

0:41:100:41:13

-Absolutely gobsmacked.

-Yes. I was astounded.

0:41:130:41:17

-It's quite modern, really.

-It's beautiful inside.

0:41:170:41:19

Spacious and modern but with lots of wood.

0:41:190:41:21

The graveyard aspect of it didn't put you off

0:41:210:41:24

but you didn't get a whole lot of growing area there, did you?

0:41:240:41:27

I could make a compromise.

0:41:270:41:30

My only worry with consecrated ground like that is

0:41:300:41:33

how far you'd have to go to get permission to do anything.

0:41:330:41:35

Have you managed to agree at least on a favourite property?

0:41:350:41:38

I think the favourite really is the second one, really, isn't it?

0:41:400:41:43

-For me, yes.

-And for you, Wendy, as well?

-I like the second one.

0:41:430:41:47

I am concerned about its position.

0:41:470:41:50

I felt it was a little bit, for me, a little bit cut off.

0:41:500:41:55

How are we leaving this then?

0:41:550:41:57

Are you going back to the second property location at some point?

0:41:570:42:00

I would like to.

0:42:000:42:02

I'd like to visit the locations of the second property and the church.

0:42:020:42:06

And the church, yeah. Both of them.

0:42:060:42:08

OK, get a hold of some maps, go back for a second viewing,

0:42:080:42:13

maybe the next few weeks.

0:42:130:42:14

Either way, please let us know.

0:42:140:42:16

I'd love to hear what your final decision on this is. Good luck.

0:42:160:42:19

Thank you.

0:42:190:42:21

I think we nearly had three in contention this time

0:42:250:42:28

because if the first house was at the right money,

0:42:280:42:31

that could well have been in the running too.

0:42:310:42:33

As it stands, it's between a converted church with its own graveyard

0:42:330:42:37

and a thatched property.

0:42:370:42:38

Neither of which are everybody's cup of tea

0:42:380:42:40

but I think quirky was definitely the order of the day.

0:42:400:42:43

So hopefully, they'll go back to both properties and both locations

0:42:430:42:47

and out of those two houses,

0:42:470:42:49

one of them will be the house they retire to.

0:42:490:42:52

See you next time.

0:42:520:42:53

After careful consideration, Rick and Wendy were more interested in the mystery house

0:42:550:43:00

and are keen to work out the options for the garden

0:43:000:43:03

before making a final decision.
