Meet my new friend Nelson, a one-eyed grey seal

0:00:020:00:05

or rather, a life-sized statue of him.

0:00:050:00:07

Where are we? Who is he? Why is he here?

0:00:070:00:11

I'll tell you in just a moment.

0:00:110:00:13

On today's show, I'm in search of the cute country cottage

0:00:430:00:47

our buyer has been dreaming of for over 30 years.

0:00:470:00:50

Early on, we get off to a great start.

0:00:500:00:54

-What would your daughter say if she saw this?

-She'd say, "Mum, buy it."

0:00:540:00:59

But then our mystery house causes a bit of consternation.

0:00:590:01:02

It's nice but it needs an awful lot doing to it.

0:01:020:01:07

Today I'm in south Cornwall,

0:01:110:01:13

home to 40% of Britain's grey seal population.

0:01:130:01:18

For 25 years, the real Nelson was a frequent visitor to these waters

0:01:180:01:23

but it was here in Looe that he eventually called home,

0:01:230:01:27

which is hardly surprising when you realise

0:01:270:01:30

there's a fish market on the other side of the harbour.

0:01:300:01:33

Sadly, Nelson died in 2003

0:01:330:01:36

but he was so loved by locals and tourists alike

0:01:360:01:41

that the town now has a permanent memorial of him here

0:01:410:01:45

on Pennyland Rocks.

0:01:450:01:46

As Britain's most south-westerly county,

0:01:460:01:50

Cornwall is surrounded on three sides by ocean.

0:01:500:01:54

Its length from the tip of Land's End

0:01:540:01:56

to the eastern boundary with Devon is 70 miles,

0:01:560:01:59

while at its narrowest part, it's just seven miles wide.

0:01:590:02:05

The long and rugged coastline has always been important

0:02:050:02:08

to the people who live here. In days gone by, ships were wrecked

0:02:080:02:12

so often that the term 'wrecking' was born.

0:02:120:02:14

This meant taking valuables from a stricken vessel and for many,

0:02:140:02:18

it came to be quite a lucrative activity.

0:02:180:02:22

Cornwall is also renowned for the mining of tin and copper

0:02:220:02:26

which was an important industry in the region from the Middle Ages

0:02:260:02:31

to its peak in the 19th century.

0:02:310:02:34

Currently however, derelict mine workings survive in only nine areas of the county.

0:02:340:02:39

The ones that do remain are protected as World Heritage Sites.

0:02:390:02:43

Whether you're after a slice of history,

0:02:430:02:46

glorious coastal walks or simply want a bask on the beach,

0:02:460:02:50

Cornwall has plenty to offer for house buyers looking to Escape To The Country.

0:02:500:02:55

Today, the average price of a detached property here in Cornwall

0:02:580:03:02

is just under £270,000.

0:03:020:03:06

That's around 5% above the national average.

0:03:060:03:10

Those figures, although officially correct, don't really paint

0:03:100:03:14

a realistic picture of the housing market here.

0:03:140:03:18

You see, if you took two practically identical houses -

0:03:180:03:21

let's say for argument's sake, detached. four bedrooms, set in three quarters of an acre -

0:03:210:03:27

and put one of those houses by the coast with spectacular sea views

0:03:270:03:33

and the other inland surrounded by wonderful countryside,

0:03:330:03:37

you might have two very similar properties

0:03:370:03:40

but you'd have two very different price tags.

0:03:400:03:43

In fact, a leading estate agent here in Cornwall

0:03:430:03:47

said the inland property would cost around £600,000.

0:03:470:03:51

However, and here's the big difference,

0:03:510:03:54

the property by the coast would sell for around two million.

0:03:540:04:00

Bear that in mind as we take a look

0:04:000:04:02

at what's currently on the market in the county.

0:04:020:04:05

For £360,000, you could be living in this three-bedroom former barn in Pillaton.

0:04:050:04:12

It has a topsy-turvy layout with two bedrooms on the ground floor

0:04:120:04:16

and only one upstairs.

0:04:160:04:18

Also on this floor, you'll find a bright modern kitchen

0:04:180:04:22

and a sitting room that features an authentic log burner.

0:04:220:04:26

This five-bedroom Victorian stone barn conversion in Sheviock

0:04:260:04:30

is priced at £600,000.

0:04:300:04:34

Originally two agricultural barns joined together 15 years ago,

0:04:340:04:38

it's been beautifully modernised while retaining

0:04:380:04:41

the original exposed beams inside.

0:04:410:04:44

It also comes with a variety of outbuildings, including stables

0:04:440:04:48

and three acres of paddocks.

0:04:480:04:50

And if your budget can stretch to £950,000,

0:04:510:04:56

you could opt for this -

0:04:560:04:58

a five bedroom former pump house in Treesmill

0:04:580:05:01

which is surrounded by a garden and overlooks its own lake.

0:05:010:05:04

The master bedroom has a stunning en-suite

0:05:040:05:08

and the double-height kitchen/diner was converted from the old engine room.

0:05:080:05:12

Some wonderful properties there to suit all budgets in all locations.

0:05:120:05:18

We've got three more smashing houses lined up for today's buyer.

0:05:180:05:21

Let's meet Jenny and her best friend Jean.

0:05:210:05:25

House hunter Jenny lives in the busy commuter town of Orpington in Kent

0:05:250:05:29

and is about to retire from her job

0:05:290:05:32

working with adults with learning difficulties.

0:05:320:05:35

Accompanying her on her property search

0:05:350:05:38

is close friend of almost 30 years, Jean,

0:05:380:05:40

with whom she's been sharing her fantasies of country living ever since they met.

0:05:400:05:45

I've wanted to move to the country since my daughter was four.

0:05:450:05:49

I fell in love with Cornwall the first time I went there.

0:05:510:05:54

It's been a long, long journey and I can do it.

0:05:550:05:59

-It's just been your dream.

-It's been my dream for a long time.

0:05:590:06:03

I've heard it for the last 28 years anyway. It's been her dream.

0:06:030:06:07

-It's about time.

-It is.

0:06:070:06:09

Living on her own since her daughter's flown the nest,

0:06:110:06:13

she'd like to move to a village near Looe in Cornwall

0:06:130:06:17

where she's looking forward to a more laid-back lifestyle.

0:06:170:06:20

I would love to be able to teach cookery on a one-to-one basis.

0:06:200:06:26

In a little cottage somewhere with lovely views

0:06:260:06:30

and go to local markets and buy fresh food

0:06:300:06:33

and get involved with conservation, read more, walk more.

0:06:330:06:36

Just do more rather than work and feel tired and worn out all the time.

0:06:360:06:42

Just live life a bit more.

0:06:420:06:44

So she'll be needing a big kitchen for those cookery lessons

0:06:440:06:48

but Jenny's list of other demands is rather modest.

0:06:480:06:52

For the next property, I'd like at least two bedrooms.

0:06:520:06:56

I'd like to be in a nice village and I'd like a small garden.

0:06:560:07:02

I'd prefer something old

0:07:020:07:05

but I've seen modern houses with really beautiful views.

0:07:050:07:09

Really, I guess I'm open to anything.

0:07:090:07:13

That's what we like, a flexible buyer.

0:07:130:07:17

There is one thing she can't cope with.

0:07:170:07:20

I'm not a DIY person.

0:07:200:07:22

I'd rather somebody else did it for me.

0:07:220:07:25

A man that does, maybe.

0:07:250:07:27

I'm not really... I don't mind a bit of painting

0:07:270:07:31

but I can't do wallpapering or repairs or anything.

0:07:310:07:35

Well, we've had our cards marked.

0:07:350:07:38

Just one more thing to check and that's the money.

0:07:380:07:42

The budget for my next property would be £230,000.

0:07:420:07:46

Jenny has set her heart on living in a village

0:07:540:07:58

close to the small coastal town of Looe.

0:07:580:08:00

We'll be taking her and Jean around three wonderful properties

0:08:000:08:03

and as ever, I'll be asking them

0:08:030:08:05

to guess the price of each home before I reveal it.

0:08:050:08:10

Our last offering is of course our mystery house.

0:08:100:08:13

With today's choice,

0:08:130:08:14

we are making Jenny face up to one of her pet hates.

0:08:140:08:17

Hello, ladies. Welcome to Cornwall.

0:08:190:08:23

Jenny, it's been a bit of a dream of yours to move here.

0:08:230:08:26

Did you ever think, "I'm actually never going to do it," or did you know in your heart?

0:08:260:08:30

I knew in my heart I'd get there but I didn't know when.

0:08:300:08:34

This is the time.

0:08:340:08:35

It is and you've brought Jean to give you some moral support

0:08:350:08:37

making sure we find you the perfect property, all going well.

0:08:370:08:40

Are there any elements of your old life you're going to miss in Kent?

0:08:400:08:46

Just my daughter, really. That's it. And my friends.

0:08:460:08:49

But you're both going to come and stay, aren't you?

0:08:490:08:52

I know trying to be close to a community's important, isn't it?

0:08:520:08:56

It is. Because I'm getting older,

0:08:560:08:59

-I need a doctor, a post office, neighbours.

-Yeah.

0:08:590:09:02

And you want to make new friends when you're down here.

0:09:020:09:04

We're going to be bringing Jean down regularly from Kent

0:09:040:09:08

but obviously you want new friends here too.

0:09:080:09:10

I do, and I'll join lots of things and be involved with conservation and things.

0:09:100:09:13

Well, we've got a fantastic day to start our search.

0:09:130:09:16

We've got three smashing properties to show you, so shall we get going?

0:09:160:09:20

For her maximum budget of £230,000, Jenny's short but sweet wish-list

0:09:230:09:28

includes a minimum of two bedrooms so Jean or her daughter can stay.

0:09:280:09:34

A large kitchen/diner for those cooking lessons

0:09:340:09:37

and a small garden where she can grow her own veg.

0:09:370:09:41

Jean, how good a cook is Jenny?

0:09:470:09:49

I think she's excellent. It's lovely.

0:09:490:09:52

You think this idea of doing some one-on-one cookery courses is going to work?

0:09:520:09:56

Yeah, Jenny would be really good at that.

0:09:560:09:59

I might be your first client because I can't cook at all, Jenny.

0:09:590:10:03

-You'd be very welcome.

-You could open your business with me.

0:10:030:10:06

-That'd set me off.

-If you can get me to cook properly,

0:10:060:10:10

my husband would love you forever.

0:10:100:10:12

We've travelled eight miles east of Looe

0:10:120:10:14

to the popular village of St Germans.

0:10:140:10:17

Taking its name from its Norman Priory Church,

0:10:170:10:20

the village has all the necessary amenities such as a pub

0:10:200:10:24

and community shop which also acts as a Post Office.

0:10:240:10:27

The Port Eliot estate next to the church

0:10:270:10:30

hosts regular social events such as cookery days, ideal for Jenny.

0:10:300:10:36

Once two large cottages dating back around 200 years,

0:10:360:10:39

this property has been converted into four smaller ones

0:10:390:10:42

and the first house on our list is the end terrace cottage.

0:10:420:10:47

So, ladies, here is our first property.

0:10:470:10:50

-It looks lovely.

-It does, it does.

0:10:500:10:53

This has got the original stone walls and slate roof.

0:10:530:10:58

-I love the door.

-I love the door, it's lovely, isn't it?

0:10:580:11:00

Your dream of a country cottage in Cornwall - is this close so far?

0:11:000:11:07

-It is.

-It looks really nice.

-It looks lovely from outside.

0:11:070:11:10

Shall we step in? Come on, ladies.

0:11:100:11:13

So, the exterior is living up to Jenny's expectations

0:11:130:11:16

and I think the cosy interior of this cottage

0:11:160:11:19

could be just what she's looking for.

0:11:190:11:22

Right, come on through. Jean, I'll let you get the door. Step inside.

0:11:220:11:28

-Your cottage.

-It looks very nice.

0:11:280:11:32

-Very nice.

-It is, it's a lovely room.

-Love the fireplace.

0:11:320:11:35

Noticed that straight away, didn't you?

0:11:350:11:38

It's lovely and it's nice with a bit of a porch actually.

0:11:380:11:41

Handy for coats and boots for all this walking that you're going to do when you move down here.

0:11:410:11:46

-Yeah, that's true. I think everything would fit.

-It would.

0:11:460:11:49

It's also a different mindset, isn't it,

0:11:490:11:52

because although you've been in your house a long time,

0:11:520:11:54

you moved into it brand new.

0:11:540:11:56

-This cottage was built in the early 1800s.

-It's more me, actually.

0:11:560:12:00

It is, definitely.

0:12:000:12:02

-This is Jenny's dream cottage.

-It is, really.

0:12:020:12:05

It seems Jenny and Jean both love this home

0:12:050:12:09

but part of Jenny's dream was giving cookery lessons

0:12:090:12:12

so let's move on to the all-important kitchen.

0:12:120:12:15

-How's this for size for you?

-It's a good size.

0:12:150:12:17

-I think it is.

-You've got a nice range there.

0:12:170:12:20

The range actually provides the hot water and the heating for the cottage.

0:12:200:12:25

-That's good, isn't it?

-Jean, do you like it?

0:12:250:12:28

I do, I think it's lovely and you'd easily get your table there, Jenny.

0:12:280:12:31

I think so.

0:12:310:12:33

You'd have it folded down but if anyone comes, just open it up.

0:12:330:12:37

-I'm liking this, girls.

-You'd do that, of course.

0:12:370:12:40

I think I'll leave them to it.

0:12:400:12:42

They're already working out where the furniture's going to go.

0:12:420:12:45

With Jenny all but moved in, we're making our way upstairs

0:12:450:12:49

and first stop is the room she could be calling her own.

0:12:490:12:53

The cottage has two bedrooms. This is the master.

0:12:550:12:58

-It's very nice, it's a good size.

-I love the window seat.

0:12:580:13:02

-Love the floor, nice floor.

-It's gorgeous.

0:13:020:13:05

-Original planks by the looks of it. It's very me.

-Is it?

-It is.

0:13:050:13:10

-You could see her living here quite comfortably, could you?

-I could.

0:13:100:13:14

It's very me.

0:13:140:13:15

Jenny's sorted but what about Jean when she stays?

0:13:150:13:20

Well, the second bedroom is right next door

0:13:200:13:22

and is almost as large and bright as the master.

0:13:220:13:26

They can both share the small but perfectly formed bathroom.

0:13:260:13:31

Another thing on Jenny's wish list

0:13:310:13:33

was a small and manageable garden with views

0:13:330:13:36

so we're on the way to see what this property has to offer.

0:13:360:13:40

Outside, you've got this courtyard with a pretty little patio.

0:13:400:13:44

There's a raised platform there that catches the sun in the afternoon.

0:13:440:13:48

-It's very nice.

-It is.

0:13:480:13:49

I've got lots of pots in my garden so I could put lots of pots around.

0:13:490:13:54

-Very pretty.

-It is, isn't it? Low maintenance, isn't it?

0:13:540:13:58

It is low maintenance.

0:13:580:14:00

Don't fancy a little bit more of a challenge?

0:14:000:14:04

Well, you know, I could always get somebody to do it

0:14:040:14:07

if I had a bit more of a challenge.

0:14:070:14:09

Shall I show you? Your face, Jean! I love your face, come with me.

0:14:090:14:14

Yes, there's more to the grounds here than meets the eye.

0:14:170:14:22

A set of steps leads us up to the garden

0:14:220:14:24

which is mainly laid to lawn and has views over the village and woodland.

0:14:240:14:28

Welcome to your secret garden.

0:14:280:14:30

It's lovely. What a surprise.

0:14:300:14:33

You wouldn't expect it to be up here and I was a little bit worried

0:14:330:14:36

when you loved the patio so much and you wanted low maintenance.

0:14:360:14:40

There's a little bit more up here but, Jean,

0:14:400:14:42

I think this would be perfect for Jenny, don't you?

0:14:420:14:45

-I think so. It's just right.

-That's quite nice.

0:14:450:14:47

It's less than mine, maintenance-wise,

0:14:470:14:50

I would have thought.

0:14:500:14:51

From this elevated position, not only do get the sunshine

0:14:510:14:54

but you also get that view as well.

0:14:540:14:57

It's a lovely view, it's beautiful.

0:14:570:14:59

So, who wants to go first with guessing the price?

0:14:590:15:02

Shall I go first? £220,000.

0:15:020:15:06

-OK.

-I would say 210.

-Right.

0:15:060:15:10

Its £236,950.

0:15:120:15:15

-OK.

-£7,000 over your budget. I think we're close to the coast

0:15:170:15:21

and that's probably reflected in that price.

0:15:210:15:25

-Has that surprised you?

-It has, yeah, because it's two-bedroomed.

0:15:250:15:28

Why don't you have another look around the cottage

0:15:280:15:31

-and I'll catch up with you in a little while.

-OK.

0:15:310:15:34

With a budget of £230,000,

0:15:360:15:39

this house is nearly 7,000 over

0:15:390:15:41

but it could be worth making an offer as properties in this area

0:15:410:15:45

have been selling for around 6% lower than the asking price.

0:15:450:15:50

All in all, this home has delivered everything on Jenny's list.

0:15:500:15:54

It's a lovely period cottage with a kitchen/diner

0:15:540:15:57

big enough for those cookery lessons. It has two bedrooms

0:15:570:16:01

and outside there's a manageable garden with great views.

0:16:010:16:05

Kitchen's a nice size, Jean.

0:16:050:16:08

Nice and square but it would need a refurb, really, wouldn't it?

0:16:080:16:12

-I think so.

-I'd keep the range. I think that's really nice.

0:16:120:16:16

Once you've done the kitchen, would it be ideal for teaching cookery?

0:16:160:16:19

It would because I'd have some sort of surface over there

0:16:190:16:23

for demonstrating and people doing their own thing.

0:16:230:16:27

-It's good.

-It would work.

0:16:270:16:29

It's really nice - stone cottage, lovely valley, lots of trees, all the things I love.

0:16:290:16:35

I feel that this is really near to what I'd like to buy.

0:16:350:16:41

Just needs to be a little bit lower in price for me.

0:16:410:16:45

But it's lovely. I like it very much.

0:16:450:16:48

This house fits the bill perfectly for Jenny. She's always wanted a stone cottage in a village,

0:16:480:16:54

and the view is lovely.

0:16:540:16:56

A lovely rural view. It's really nice. Yeah, it's a good start.

0:16:560:17:00

Right, girls, seen enough? Happy?

0:17:040:17:07

Yes, it's lovely. I think we're almost there.

0:17:070:17:10

-Great start. What do you think?

-It's brilliant, yeah.

0:17:100:17:13

-Can you imagine her living there?

-I can. It's really nice. Pretty.

0:17:130:17:16

-Good. We've got more to show you as well. Come on, then.

-Good.

0:17:160:17:20

Back in the 15th century, Looe was one of Cornwall's largest

0:17:300:17:34

and most important ports,

0:17:340:17:36

as well as the centre for fishing and boat-building.

0:17:360:17:39

The Looe Estuary divides the town in two, and in 1411,

0:17:390:17:43

the first estuary bridge in Cornwall was built here to link east and west Looe.

0:17:430:17:48

Today, while remaining a fishing community,

0:17:480:17:52

Looe's main industry is tourism and, of course,

0:17:520:17:54

no visit to Cornwall would be complete without sampling

0:17:540:17:58

at least one of the county's world famous pasties.

0:17:580:18:01

So, we sent Jean and Jenny, herself an accomplished cook,

0:18:010:18:05

not only to try one, but to learn how they're made.

0:18:050:18:08

We arranged for them to meet Lucy Taylor from a local shop,

0:18:080:18:11

where they've made traditional Cornish pasties for 22 years.

0:18:110:18:16

Good morning, ladies.

0:18:160:18:17

-Good morning.

-Smells lovely!

-Thank you.

-Looks lovely.

-Thank you.

0:18:170:18:20

-Really nicely displayed.

-Today, I think we're going to show you

0:18:200:18:23

-how to make a real, traditional Cornish pasty.

-Oh, brilliant.

-Look forward to showing you.

0:18:230:18:27

So, do you want to follow me through and I'll show you how it's done?

0:18:270:18:30

-OK.

-Will do.

0:18:300:18:32

The first evidence of the pasty as a Cornish food was found

0:18:320:18:35

in an agricultural survey of Cornwall from 1808.

0:18:350:18:38

By the end of the century,

0:18:380:18:41

pasties had already become the staple diet of tin miners

0:18:410:18:44

and farm workers due to their unique shape,

0:18:440:18:48

forming a complete meal that could be carried easily and eaten without cutlery.

0:18:480:18:53

The traditional pasty is made using a cut of beef called skirt,

0:18:530:18:58

which is taken from the animal's belly area, and prized for its flavour.

0:18:580:19:03

So we've got some pastry here. This is a shortcrust pastry.

0:19:030:19:07

It's not a heavy pastry.

0:19:070:19:09

-It's rested overnight, so it works really well.

-Yeah.

0:19:090:19:14

They we are. I'll just flour your surface for you.

0:19:160:19:20

-For you, Jenny.

-Thank you.

0:19:210:19:24

So, first of all, we've got potato and swede here

0:19:240:19:28

that's mixed with some seasoning - salt and ground black pepper.

0:19:280:19:31

So a handful of potato and swede first.

0:19:310:19:36

Plenty of meat. You want a nice line of it through the middle,

0:19:360:19:39

-so that when you're eating it, you get a...

-Just through the middle.

0:19:390:19:42

..a nice mouthful.

0:19:420:19:44

Then, some diced onion, and then some more potato

0:19:450:19:49

-and swede on the top. This is seasoned as well.

-Right.

0:19:490:19:52

There's really a lot of filling, isn't there?

0:19:560:19:59

-Yeah, there's a nice lot of meat in there.

-There's loads.

0:19:590:20:01

Once the pasty is filled, it's time to seal and crimp it.

0:20:010:20:06

You pull the pastry together, and then it's a bit like pleating.

0:20:060:20:10

You're pulling one piece of pastry over your thumb and moving it along,

0:20:100:20:13

like a pinching motion.

0:20:130:20:15

Following a nine-year campaign by the Cornish Pasty Association,

0:20:150:20:19

the name "Cornish pasty" was recently awarded protected geographical indication,

0:20:190:20:25

or PGI status, by the European Commission.

0:20:250:20:29

According to this status, a Cornish pasty should be shaped like a D

0:20:290:20:33

and crimped on one side, not on the top.

0:20:330:20:36

It also states that pasties must be prepared in Cornwall,

0:20:360:20:40

just like Jenny and Jean's.

0:20:400:20:42

-Very good for a first attempt.

-Oh, look at that!

-Well done.

0:20:420:20:46

-Haven't made one since I was at school!

-Oh, really?

0:20:460:20:49

With a glazing of egg added to give it that golden colour,

0:20:490:20:53

our authentic Cornish pasties are cooked for around 55 minutes.

0:20:530:20:57

And Sarah, the owner of the shop, has offered to give her verdict

0:20:570:21:02

on Jenny and Jean's first attempt at the local speciality.

0:21:020:21:06

-I think they've passed the test, do you?

-SARAH:

-I think they have!

0:21:060:21:09

So now Jenny's proven her skills in the art of baking,

0:21:090:21:12

it's time to turn up the heat on our house search,

0:21:120:21:15

as we hit the road to find her dream cottage.

0:21:150:21:19

We've travelled around 20 miles northeast of Looe to the village of Stoke Climsland,

0:21:220:21:27

a community in the Tamar Valley with a 15th century church,

0:21:270:21:32

a local shop which doubles as a post office,

0:21:320:21:34

and a sports and social club,

0:21:340:21:36

which hosts some very interesting nights' entertainment.

0:21:360:21:39

Our second house is a Grade II listed cottage,

0:21:390:21:42

once the property of the Duchy of Cornwall,

0:21:420:21:44

and dating back to the 1800s.

0:21:440:21:47

So we've travelled a little bit further inland,

0:21:470:21:51

-and here is your second property.

-Looks lovely.

-It's cute.

0:21:510:21:54

-It is, yeah.

-Looks very nice.

0:21:540:21:56

-Looks big and solid and cottagey.

-Yeah.

0:21:560:21:59

-Good!

-Very cute.

-So, keen to get inside?

0:21:590:22:02

-We are.

-Yeah.

-Come on, then.

-Good.

0:22:020:22:04

It might look like a typical cottage from the outside,

0:22:040:22:08

but once we get inside, Jenny and Jean will soon discover

0:22:080:22:11

there's something extraordianry about this property.

0:22:110:22:15

Come on in, girls. Look at this beautiful old floor.

0:22:150:22:18

-It's lovely, isn't it?

-Well done, Jean, get that door.

0:22:180:22:21

Come on through.

0:22:210:22:23

'And right about now, they probably expect to see a sitting room.'

0:22:230:22:26

Now, this cottage is unusual because it's an upside down house.

0:22:260:22:31

It's inverted, so the living room accomodation is upstairs,

0:22:310:22:34

and the two double bedrooms are downstairs.

0:22:340:22:37

-That's quite unusual.

-Yeah, it is, actually.

0:22:370:22:40

You probably noticed, there's not an awful lot of storage in this room.

0:22:400:22:44

But cleverly, under the bed, there's plenty.

0:22:440:22:48

It's a built-in bed, isn't it, so you wouldn't be able to get your own bed in here, would you?

0:22:480:22:52

-You've got a double bedroom right at the front of the cottage.

-Oh!

0:22:520:22:55

-That's quite unusual. Doesn't matter, does it?

-It is, actually.

0:22:550:22:58

So you don't mind the idea of perhaps sleeping downstairs?

0:22:580:23:03

No, it's not a problem.

0:23:030:23:04

And literally, the downstairs shower room is just down the hallway,

0:23:040:23:07

-but, I want to take you two straight upstairs.

-OK.

0:23:070:23:11

'So now we're heading up to the living area which has a kitchen

0:23:130:23:16

'that I think will be the perfect place to give cookery lessons.'

0:23:160:23:21

Oh, wow!

0:23:210:23:22

-This is lovely.

-This is the reason...

-Isn't this lovely?

0:23:220:23:26

-This is really lovely.

-Come through.

-It's really nice!

-It is.

0:23:260:23:30

So this is the reason the bedrooms are downstairs.

0:23:300:23:32

-Oh, look at the view. Look!

-Beautiful.

0:23:320:23:34

Oh, that's lovely!

0:23:360:23:37

Being at the kitchen now, and your work surface there.

0:23:370:23:40

-That is very nice.

-Yeah, wouldn't that be great?

0:23:400:23:42

I can just see you, Jenny, doing your demonstrating now. Cooking.

0:23:420:23:46

I can see me there as well!

0:23:460:23:48

-Look at the wood, it's lovely!

-It's wonderful.

0:23:480:23:50

And I love the thick walls, the brickwork...the beams.

0:23:500:23:56

-Does it feel homely?

-It's lovely.

-It's a good size. It's really nice.

0:23:560:24:01

You can imagine yourself here, you know,

0:24:010:24:04

with all the food and friends and fire alight.

0:24:040:24:08

-Lovely.

-So what would your daughter say if she saw this?

0:24:080:24:11

-She'd say, "Mum, buy it!"

-Ooh!

0:24:110:24:14

-That's pretty definite!

-Yeah, it's lovely. It's me.

-Is it?

0:24:140:24:18

The other one was me, but this is more me.

0:24:180:24:20

This upside down property has edged ahead,

0:24:200:24:24

but it's got another surprise for Jean and Jenny up another flight of stairs.

0:24:240:24:28

-Well, that's unexpected.

-It's unbelievable, isn't it?

0:24:300:24:34

It's lovely. Another floor!

0:24:340:24:35

-And look, you can see your front room down there.

-Yeah.

0:24:350:24:38

It's roomy as well.

0:24:380:24:41

So, my question to you two is, what would you do with this floor?

0:24:410:24:44

Um...

0:24:440:24:46

I'd probably have this as a bedroom.

0:24:460:24:49

I think, like, when you're doing the cookery school, they could sleep up here.

0:24:490:24:52

-Yeah.

-And have a bed up here, for them.

-Yeah, it would be a bedroom.

0:24:520:24:56

When you think of a traditional Cornish cottage...

0:24:560:24:59

it's not like this, is it?

0:24:590:25:01

From the outside, it just doesn't look it.

0:25:010:25:03

I mean, it's lovely and old-fashioned, but modern as well.

0:25:030:25:07

-Surpassed your expectations?

-It has surpassed my expectations.

0:25:070:25:11

Lovely.

0:25:110:25:13

Well, that's a great result,

0:25:130:25:16

'as Jenny seems to be really excited by this cottage.

0:25:160:25:20

'So can the garden match up?'

0:25:200:25:22

While it's not the largest, it's got plenty of room for growing veg, and should be easy to manage.

0:25:220:25:27

Here, you've got a lovely, enclosed, south-facing garden.

0:25:270:25:31

-Love it. Like the rose beds.

-I think it's lovely.

0:25:310:25:35

So, all very positive, you're both making the right noises for me. Guess what's coming next?

0:25:350:25:40

How much is this wonderful cottage on the market for?

0:25:400:25:44

I think it's probably over-budget.

0:25:440:25:47

-I don't know...

-Don't look at me like that!

-240.

0:25:490:25:53

-240, OK. And your budget is?

-230.

-OK, Jean.

0:25:530:25:57

I think it's 230,000.

0:25:570:26:00

If I said it was under-budget by £20,000...

0:26:000:26:04

-BOTH:

-No!

-That's good, isn't it?

-That's great!

0:26:040:26:07

-Would you be delighted?

-Yeah.

-I'd be delighted for Jenny, I would.

0:26:070:26:11

-That'd be great.

-Well, it has JUST come down in price to £210,000.

0:26:110:26:18

-That is fantastic.

-That's very tempting.

0:26:180:26:21

Let me see your face, cos you're looking at the house!

0:26:210:26:23

-Is that delight? Are you thinking things through?

-Yeah, it's lovely.

0:26:230:26:27

-Are we really close?

-Yeah, yeah.

0:26:270:26:30

-As close, probably, as you'll ever get.

-How fantastic!

-It's lovely.

0:26:300:26:34

Hands up who wants to go and have another look around that cottage? Go on, then, girls, off you go.

0:26:340:26:39

Have fun! Take as long as you like.

0:26:390:26:42

Under-budget at £210,000,

0:26:420:26:46

this unusual cottage delivers handsomely on all Jenny's demands.

0:26:460:26:51

It has...

0:26:510:26:52

-So, what do you think, is this it?

-I do. I do think it's it.

0:27:050:27:09

-It's lovely.

-Yeah, it is. It's very me.

-Yeah.

-Yeah.

0:27:090:27:12

-I was getting emotional for you.

-I know, I saw you, you were crying.

0:27:120:27:15

I think this cottage, for Jenny, is near-on perfect.

0:27:150:27:19

It's very spacious, the kitchen,

0:27:190:27:22

and it's just ideal for what she has in mind - for teaching cookery.

0:27:220:27:25

Wow! As I walked through the door, I just thought, "Wow!"

0:27:250:27:30

Going into the bedrooms, I just thought they were lovely.

0:27:300:27:33

And then when we went upstairs, it was overwhelming, really.

0:27:330:27:37

It's everything I probably ever dreamed I'd get.

0:27:370:27:40

And I can see family and friends really enjoying visiting me here.

0:27:400:27:45

Not wanting to sound smug, but I think we've done pretty well today.

0:27:450:27:49

-Right, ladies! My girls, have you seen enough?

-We have.

0:27:490:27:53

-Yes, it's lovely.

-Yeah?

0:27:530:27:55

You said that in unison, so that is a thumbs up, yeah.

0:27:550:27:58

Got to drag you away now. Come on.

0:27:580:28:02

As evening falls over Cornwall, it's the end of day one

0:28:120:28:15

of our search for the cottage of Jenny's dreams.

0:28:150:28:19

Jenny from Orpington in Kent is about to retire,

0:28:230:28:28

and with friend Jean for moral support,

0:28:280:28:30

she's hoping the fantasy of country living she's held for 30 years

0:28:300:28:34

can come true in Cornwall.

0:28:340:28:36

'We've seen two properties so far that have both come very close to perfection.

0:28:360:28:41

'But, coming up, is our mystery house a project too far for Jenny?'

0:28:410:28:46

-I mean, if you had enough money, this could be beautiful.

-It could.

0:28:460:28:51

And I get on-board the new wave of surfing.

0:28:510:28:55

For Jenny, with her best friend Jean along for moral support,

0:28:580:29:02

this move to the south of Cornwall represents a lifelong dream.

0:29:020:29:07

Mindful of her budget, yesterday, we showed them two period cottages.

0:29:070:29:12

The first was quite near to the coast,

0:29:120:29:15

and, although well-received, was slightly over her budget.

0:29:150:29:19

The second one, this time more inland, well...

0:29:190:29:22

They both seemed to love it.

0:29:220:29:25

So today, it's now time for our mystery house,

0:29:250:29:28

and to be honest, I'm not quite sure how it's going to go down.

0:29:280:29:33

We've travelled further along the Cornish coast,

0:29:330:29:36

15 miles west of Looe, to the village of St Blazey.

0:29:360:29:40

With a population of 6,000,

0:29:400:29:41

its high street has all the amenities Jenny will need.

0:29:410:29:45

Our mystery house is the closest to the coast of the three properties we've seen.

0:29:450:29:50

Dating back to 1840,

0:29:500:29:52

it has real potential to be the cottage of her dreams.

0:29:520:29:55

As a self-confessed DIY novice,

0:29:550:29:58

she may need some professional help to make this her perfect home.

0:29:580:30:02

So, ladies, this is...the mystery house.

0:30:040:30:09

-It's lovely.

-Looks good. Very nice.

-It does.

-Very tranquil.

0:30:090:30:13

So why is it our mystery house?

0:30:130:30:15

-No idea at all.

-No.

-The P word?

0:30:150:30:19

-Bit of a project, perhaps?

-Oh, right!

-Project.

-Yeah.

0:30:190:30:23

-Oh, look at the reactions. None!

-THEY LAUGH

0:30:230:30:26

-So...

-Project and price.

-Project AND price. I like that!

0:30:260:30:30

So I think we need open minds.

0:30:300:30:32

-Shall we start the tour?

-Yes.

-Come on.

0:30:320:30:36

'The P word probably wasn't what Jenny wanted to hear, but I hope

0:30:360:30:41

'she gives this cottage a chance when we step through the door.

0:30:410:30:44

'After all, first impressions were very favourable.'

0:30:440:30:48

So welcome to your mystery cottage.

0:30:480:30:52

I said a little bit of a project.

0:30:520:30:54

Probably, you can glean that as we walk straight into the kitchen.

0:30:540:30:58

The positives are the woodburner. I like the chimney breast.

0:30:580:31:05

-You've got the size here. You could have the kitchen of your dreams.

-Very good size, yeah.

0:31:050:31:09

-I mean, if you had enough money, this could be beautiful.

-It could!

0:31:090:31:15

Has Jenny got the enthusiasm and the character to take on a project?

0:31:150:31:19

-I don't know. You can...

-Breathe in and breathe out, basically.

0:31:190:31:23

What does that mean, "Breathe in and breathe out?"

0:31:230:31:26

-That's as much as she can manage!

-THEY LAUGH

0:31:260:31:29

So, it doesn't sound like Jenny's up for breathing new life into

0:31:290:31:33

this property just yet, but I'm not giving up.

0:31:330:31:38

Maybe this next room can help convince her to give it a try.

0:31:380:31:42

So here's your sitting room.

0:31:420:31:44

-It's a two-up, two-down, in a way, isn't it?

-Yeah.

0:31:450:31:47

-Yes, isn't it?

-But not bad sizes.

0:31:470:31:49

-Yeah, and I like the fireplace.

-That's lovely, isn't it?

0:31:490:31:53

-Very pretty.

-Yes.

0:31:530:31:55

-Now, having lived in a modern house for, what, 30 years?

-Yes, from new.

0:31:550:31:59

How does it feel, you know,

0:31:590:32:01

that adjustment moving into something that's this old?

0:32:010:32:04

It would be great if, you know, you had the money to do it up, I think.

0:32:040:32:08

I mean, there's nothing wrong with it. It's a typical little cottage.

0:32:080:32:13

You know, the windows on each side, the door in the middle.

0:32:130:32:16

It's nice, but it does need an awful lot doing to it.

0:32:160:32:19

Jean could bring her tool kit with her when she comes down to stay.

0:32:190:32:22

-Yeah, she could, but I don't suppose she'd do much with it.

-Probably not.

0:32:220:32:27

Well, the answer could be to get

0:32:270:32:29

someone in to help with the renovations.

0:32:290:32:31

That is if the price is right

0:32:310:32:34

and Jenny falls in love with the rest of this cottage.

0:32:340:32:37

Off the landing there's two good sized double bedrooms,

0:32:370:32:40

so there's a room for Jean to stay.

0:32:400:32:43

A bright family bathroom, all with those fantastic sash windows.

0:32:430:32:48

The bedroom we're looking at is the master.

0:32:480:32:51

-Views overlooking the garden.

-That's very pretty.

0:32:510:32:53

-It is lovely, yeah.

-Nice size room.

-It is a nice size room.

0:32:530:32:56

-Nice fireplace.

-Yeah.

-The cottage does have potential, doesn't it?

0:32:570:33:00

Oh, definitely. I mean, for somebody that's good at

0:33:000:33:05

DIY or a builder, it's a little gem.

0:33:050:33:08

So, have you ever had to do up a house from scratch, either of you?

0:33:080:33:11

No, I haven't.

0:33:110:33:12

I had to have a house done up after a fire and it was horrendous.

0:33:120:33:16

So something like this is a big project again.

0:33:160:33:20

-Is it bringing back memories?

-Yes, horrible memories.

-OK.

0:33:200:33:24

Well, on that note, we're going to head outside.

0:33:240:33:27

So, with memories like that, it's going to be hard to shift

0:33:270:33:31

Jenny's mindset into welcoming this renovation project.

0:33:310:33:34

'But I'm not giving up hope

0:33:340:33:37

'because she hasn't seen the lovely garden yet.

0:33:370:33:40

'It comes with a secluded patio, lush expanse of lawn

0:33:400:33:44

'and a variety of shrubs and fruit trees.'

0:33:440:33:46

So this period cottage actually has, I think, quite a large garden.

0:33:480:33:52

Yeah, it's lovely. I like it. You know, nice mature trees. The garden's lovely.

0:33:520:33:56

If I had loads of money, I might think about the house.

0:33:560:34:00

Which leads me on to money, doesn't it?

0:34:000:34:02

How much do you both think this period cottage is on the market for?

0:34:020:34:06

I think £175,000.

0:34:070:34:11

OK. Jenny?

0:34:110:34:13

Look at you, studying that cottage.

0:34:130:34:16

-I think about £180,000.

-It's a little bit more than that.

0:34:170:34:23

-It's actually on the market for £195,000.

-Wow!

0:34:230:34:29

-So that would leave you some in the budget.

-Yeah.

-To do it up.

-Yeah.

0:34:290:34:33

-£35,000. As you say, if that's just too much of a project for you.

-Yeah.

0:34:330:34:38

It's a project too far.

0:34:380:34:40

Why don't you have another look around anyway

0:34:400:34:42

because you can always get ideas from properties.

0:34:420:34:45

-We all agree it is a cute little period cottage, isn't it?

-It is.

0:34:450:34:49

-It's just too much of a project for you.

-Yes, it is.

0:34:490:34:51

Which is fair enough, but thank you for looking at our mystery house.

0:34:510:34:54

-Off you go, girls.

-OK.

0:34:540:34:56

Well, under budget at £195,000, this property certainly has

0:34:570:35:04

the potential to be Jenny's dream cottage.

0:35:040:35:07

It has space downstairs to create her perfect kitchen,

0:35:070:35:10

two good sized bedrooms and a low maintenance garden.

0:35:100:35:15

When I first saw the mystery house I thought it was very pretty,

0:35:150:35:18

very cottagey,

0:35:180:35:20

but I sort of thought it probably needed quite a bit doing to it.

0:35:200:35:24

I think, even with a budget of £35,000,

0:35:240:35:29

it would probably take more than that.

0:35:290:35:32

It would take a long time to do, more's to the point.

0:35:320:35:35

I don't want a great big project now, not at this time of life.

0:35:350:35:39

I do think Jenny's going to have to make some compromises.

0:35:390:35:42

I can't see her in this house at all. No.

0:35:440:35:46

The garden, but not the house.

0:35:460:35:50

Come on, girls.

0:35:510:35:53

Has the mystery house made you change your mind?

0:35:530:35:56

-No, I'm afraid not.

-No?

-Not for me.

-I don't think so.

0:35:560:35:59

-But enjoyed one final look around it?

-Yeah, it's been good.

-Yeah, it was good.

0:35:590:36:03

That's it now. We've shown you all three properties.

0:36:030:36:05

Let's go somewhere quiet, you two can have a chat, and let me

0:36:050:36:09

know what conclusions you've come to.

0:36:090:36:11

The stirring seas around Cornwall

0:36:240:36:26

provide some of the best surfing conditions in Europe.

0:36:260:36:30

It's little wonder that in the early 1960s,

0:36:300:36:34

Cornwall was the first part of mainland Britain to embrace

0:36:340:36:37

the surfing culture, while Newquay, on the north coast,

0:36:370:36:41

is known as the surf capital

0:36:410:36:43

to the UK's 250,000 surfers, the south coast beaches at Praa Sands

0:36:430:36:47

and Porthleven are also extremely popular.

0:36:470:36:52

But, there's a new type of surfing currently making waves.

0:36:520:36:56

Stand up paddle boarding

0:36:560:36:57

is one of the fastest growing watersports in the world.

0:36:570:37:01

I've come to the beach in Looe to find out more about it

0:37:010:37:04

from Martin Connolly, a top-rated British surfer with 12 years

0:37:040:37:08

experience as a coach and lifeguard on Australian and local beaches.

0:37:080:37:12

-Martin, hello. Good to meet you.

-Hi there, good to see you.

0:37:120:37:16

Now, I hope I'm in good hands today.

0:37:160:37:18

-Yeah, you are definitely in safe hands.

-Good. I have tried surfing.

0:37:180:37:21

-Yeah.

-I wasn't very good. I couldn't actually get onto the board.

0:37:210:37:25

-So, hopefully, this will be a little easier.

-Yeah.

0:37:250:37:27

These boards are nice and buoyant

0:37:270:37:29

and we've got some really nice conditions out there.

0:37:290:37:31

So that'll definitely make it favourable.

0:37:310:37:33

You don't have to be super fit to do it, you just have to be able to swim, right?

0:37:330:37:36

Yeah, you need to be able to swim.

0:37:360:37:39

It helps to have good balance and upper body strength.

0:37:390:37:43

You kind of have a good workout.

0:37:430:37:45

You can make it as much of a workout as you want.

0:37:450:37:48

Good tuition, good teacher. What's the first thing I need to learn?

0:37:480:37:51

Right, we're just going to go through a couple of techniques.

0:37:510:37:55

-Now, look at my feet. Not a parallel, just a slight angle. OK?

-Yes.

0:37:550:37:59

That's really good. You'll probably find it easier to have your strongest hand

0:37:590:38:03

in the middle, like that, and your weaker hand is going to go on the T-bar, sort of there.

0:38:030:38:08

Just have a feel for that. Now, the wider the grip,

0:38:080:38:11

the more power you're going to get out of the paddle.

0:38:110:38:13

So bend your knees slightly and just pull with your middle hand

0:38:130:38:17

and push over the top with your top hand.

0:38:170:38:19

The more water you can move, the faster you're going to go

0:38:190:38:23

and the easier it is to balance. That's perfect. OK.

0:38:230:38:25

Now, to swap sides, you have to actually swap your grip like this.

0:38:250:38:30

Just get a feel for that. Again, the paddle's going to be along the rail.

0:38:300:38:34

As you go in to paddle, just bend your knees a little bit

0:38:340:38:37

so you can get more power.

0:38:370:38:38

So as you go down, bend your knees and then come back up.

0:38:380:38:41

-Perfect, perfect.

-Keep your knees, sort of, flexible.

0:38:410:38:45

You're in the perfect stance there.

0:38:450:38:48

If you can do that in the water, you'll be absolutely sweet, OK?

0:38:480:38:50

If I can do this on the water without going in, I'll be delighted.

0:38:500:38:53

Easier to learn than surfing,

0:38:530:38:55

stand up paddle board lessons can be taken by individuals of any age,

0:38:550:39:00

from 10 to 70, as long as they're confident swimmers.

0:39:000:39:04

The main attraction of the sport is that it can be done when

0:39:040:39:07

the surf is down and apparently, women can often be more skilled

0:39:070:39:11

at it than men, due to their lower centre of gravity.

0:39:110:39:15

Well, we'll see!

0:39:150:39:17

WAVES CRASH

0:39:170:39:19

The origins of stand-up paddle boarding can be traced back

0:39:190:39:23

to 1950s Hawaii,

0:39:230:39:24

with a group of watermen who worked the beaches of Waikiki,

0:39:240:39:27

offering surfing lessons and canoe rides.

0:39:270:39:30

Known as the Waikiki Beach Boys, they would stand on long boards,

0:39:300:39:34

taking pictures of the tourists learning to surf.

0:39:340:39:38

For this reason, stand-up paddle boarding is sometimes

0:39:380:39:41

known as beach boy surfing.

0:39:410:39:43

The British Stand-up Paddle Association

0:39:430:39:46

is the national body for the sport.

0:39:460:39:48

They advise that you should take a lesson to learn the basics,

0:39:480:39:51

keep your board tethered to your ankle by its leash

0:39:510:39:54

so you don't lose it, and use a lifeguarded beach.

0:39:540:39:58

Although there are a few regular competitions,

0:39:580:40:00

stand-up paddle boarding is more of a leisure pastime

0:40:000:40:04

and a great way to explore the water.

0:40:040:40:06

Well, that was great fun, but yes,

0:40:110:40:14

it was as cold as it looked.

0:40:140:40:16

Now our house hunt here in the south of Cornwall is over.

0:40:160:40:20

We've shown Jenny and Jean three fabulous period cottages,

0:40:200:40:24

but have any of them won them over?

0:40:240:40:26

Shall we go and ask them?

0:40:260:40:27

Well, ladies, that is it. The house hunt is over.

0:40:350:40:39

Three decades you have waited to move to Cornwall.

0:40:390:40:41

-Have we put you off?

-No, not at all.

-Good!

0:40:410:40:45

So, let's start off with that very first property we showed you,

0:40:450:40:48

the cottage in St Germans, not that far from the coast actually.

0:40:480:40:52

It was just up the estuary.

0:40:520:40:54

I loved it. I thought it was in a beautiful location.

0:40:540:40:56

You looked out and all you saw were trees.

0:40:560:41:00

The cottage itself was lovely, really liked it,

0:41:000:41:04

nice sized rooms.

0:41:040:41:06

-It was just a bit too expensive for me.

-OK.

0:41:060:41:10

Moving on... for our second property, we took you inland.

0:41:100:41:14

We're going to start with you, Jean. It's quite deceiving,

0:41:140:41:17

-wasn't it, from the outside?

-It was excellent.

0:41:170:41:20

You just thought it was a little two-up two-down,

0:41:200:41:22

but it was just amazing.

0:41:220:41:24

And what about you, Jenny, with that second one?

0:41:240:41:26

Well, I absolutely loved it.

0:41:260:41:29

I loved the inside of it, I loved the garden.

0:41:290:41:31

The kitchen was to die for, but unfortunately,

0:41:310:41:35

-I didn't like the village.

-Did you not?

0:41:350:41:38

What was it about the village that you weren't taken with?

0:41:380:41:41

-It wasn't very big.

-Right.

0:41:410:41:43

Because it's going to be my forever home,

0:41:430:41:46

I'd like a bit more life, really.

0:41:460:41:50

That was the most fantastic property.

0:41:500:41:53

It was everything I want.

0:41:530:41:55

Finally, we tried something a bit different with our mystery.

0:41:550:41:58

I wasn't sure how it was going to go.

0:41:580:42:01

That was very different, again a lovely house,

0:42:010:42:05

nice location. But just too much to do.

0:42:050:42:08

There was no way on earth

0:42:080:42:10

that I could get that done and even if I had the money,

0:42:100:42:14

it would be a bit of the budget

0:42:140:42:16

and I think it probably needs far, far more spending on it.

0:42:160:42:19

But what it did demonstrate is that you can still live in this

0:42:190:42:23

beautiful part of the world and buy a property for under £200,000,

0:42:230:42:27

which I thought was very interesting.

0:42:270:42:29

There are still bargains out there to be had.

0:42:290:42:31

So I think, in a way, I know what your next move is going to be,

0:42:310:42:35

but I want you to tell me.

0:42:350:42:38

Well, I shall come down and rent and then search.

0:42:380:42:43

Well, whatever happens, you're moving here very soon,

0:42:430:42:45

-so your dream has come true.

-Yeah, it has, yeah.

0:42:450:42:48

-All the best.

-Thank You.

-Thanks for your help.

0:42:480:42:51

We got close.

0:42:550:42:56

We got this close to finding Jenny

0:42:560:42:59

the perfect Cornish cottage.

0:42:590:43:02

Whatever happens,

0:43:020:43:03

we wish her all the best with her move here to Cornwall.

0:43:030:43:07

Until next time, bye-bye.
