This masterpiece of engineering behind me is 1,000 feet long and 126 feet high,

0:00:020:00:06

and it is the highest and longest aqueduct made of cast iron in the world.

0:00:060:00:11

Find out what it's called and where I am in just a moment.

0:00:110:00:15

On today's show, I'm setting out to find a working property

0:00:430:00:46

for a couple who run their own business.

0:00:460:00:48

And at first, the enthusiasm takes a bit of time to get going.

0:00:480:00:52

It's, well, yes, interesting.

0:00:520:00:55

But then their reactions are almost off the scale.

0:00:550:00:58

I'm going to shock you here now, nine and a half.

0:00:580:01:02

Oh!

0:01:020:01:03

Zowee-wowee!

0:01:030:01:05

Today we're in North East Wales, and this is the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct,

0:01:080:01:12

which amazingly was designed back in 1795 by Thomas Telford,

0:01:120:01:17

as part of the very ambitious scheme to join the rivers Dee and the Mersey.

0:01:170:01:22

Now, the whole project took about ten years,

0:01:220:01:26

and £47,000 in their money, which is about £50 million in today's money,

0:01:260:01:31

and they never quite finished the whole complex,

0:01:310:01:34

but they did finish this very impressive stretch,

0:01:340:01:37

and over 5,000 canal boats still cross it to this day

0:01:370:01:41

and it's going to be a very vertiginous journey.

0:01:410:01:45

North East Wales is a region that encompasses the counties of Wrexham,

0:01:480:01:51

Flintshire, and Denbighshire,

0:01:510:01:53

and shares its coastline with the Irish Sea.

0:01:530:01:56

It's a largely rural area,

0:01:560:01:59

and the main industry is in sheep and cattle farming.

0:01:590:02:03

Although crops such as wheat and barley are grown here too.

0:02:030:02:06

Tourism is a big part of the economy,

0:02:060:02:08

bringing in £1.8 billion across the whole of North Wales each year,

0:02:080:02:13

as well as over 37,000 jobs.

0:02:130:02:15

When you look at the stunning scenery this part of Wales has to offer,

0:02:160:02:19

from the picturesque Horseshoe Pass in the Dee Valley,

0:02:190:02:22

to the historical and charming towns of Llangollen and Denbigh,

0:02:220:02:27

it's no wonder these counties are so popular with tourists and house buyers alike.

0:02:270:02:33

There's quite a spread of house prices in the counties of North East Wales,

0:02:340:02:39

places like Wrexham and Flintshire,

0:02:390:02:40

which are on the border with England,

0:02:400:02:42

you're going to pay £40-50,000 more

0:02:420:02:44

than a little further into Wales in Denbighshire,

0:02:440:02:47

where the average house price is 150,000.

0:02:470:02:50

Still, this is a great place to be property shopping

0:02:500:02:54

because house prices here are 31% less

0:02:540:02:56

than the average for England and Wales together.

0:02:560:02:59

So, find out what you can buy for your money.

0:02:590:03:03

For just shy of £300,000, this three bedroom,

0:03:030:03:06

late Victorian lodge outside Wrexham has an attractive timbered facade.

0:03:060:03:12

And the beamed ceiling adds character charm

0:03:120:03:14

to the spacious, well equipped kitchen.

0:03:140:03:16

Along with the conservatory,

0:03:160:03:19

the private gardens are beautifully landscaped.

0:03:190:03:22

Priced at £595,000 is this attractive, three bedroom,

0:03:230:03:27

sandstone farmhouse in Northop, Flintshire.

0:03:270:03:30

Dating back to 1860 and brimming with rustic charm,

0:03:300:03:35

it features exposed timbers and stonework in the reception rooms

0:03:350:03:38

and a bright, characterful dining room.

0:03:380:03:40

Outside, there's a patio and immaculate lawns.

0:03:400:03:44

And if you have deep pockets and a love of things equestrian,

0:03:450:03:48

you might go for this four bedroomed house,

0:03:480:03:51

complete with stables in Wigfair, Denbighshire.

0:03:510:03:53

Priced at £825,000,

0:03:530:03:55

it offers dual aspect, open plan living downstairs,

0:03:550:04:00

while outside there's landscaped gardens

0:04:000:04:03

and over seven acres of grounds.

0:04:030:04:05

Some great properties there,

0:04:070:04:08

and a good indicator of how far your money goes

0:04:080:04:11

in this part of the world.

0:04:110:04:12

But let's meet today's house hunting couple

0:04:120:04:14

and find out what's on their wish list.

0:04:140:04:17

John and Sally run a forestry business,

0:04:170:04:20

and have been married for almost 40 years.

0:04:200:04:24

So far, they've bought and sold nine properties together,

0:04:240:04:26

and have been in their four bedroom home in Shrewsbury, Shropshire for six years.

0:04:260:04:31

But it's the business that's providing the main impetus

0:04:310:04:34

for their tenth house purchase.

0:04:340:04:37

Well, we want to move to the country

0:04:370:04:39

because since we've moved here, our family business has changed direction,

0:04:390:04:44

and so we're in commercial forestry,

0:04:440:04:47

and we need to have land,

0:04:470:04:49

we need to have two or three acres round our home.

0:04:490:04:52

We need space round the property to store rather large machinery

0:04:520:04:56

and this house is no longer ideal now,

0:04:560:05:00

because the cost of heating it is formidable.

0:05:000:05:04

And I know that if we go to a place in the country,

0:05:040:05:08

we will immediately turn to renewables,

0:05:080:05:11

and, obviously, wood is our business

0:05:110:05:13

and we would heat it with wood, it's quite simple.

0:05:130:05:15

So, a renewable forever home set in a couple of acres

0:05:150:05:19

is what this couple are after.

0:05:190:05:21

And, naturally, they'd like to be near some woodland too.

0:05:210:05:24

Well, we do a lot of work in North Wales forests,

0:05:240:05:27

so, on the outskirts of Chester,

0:05:270:05:29

on the Welsh side of Chester in Denbighshire and Flintshire,

0:05:290:05:34

that's really where we want to move to.

0:05:340:05:37

And if they have a chance to relax,

0:05:370:05:39

there are pursuits old and new they'd like to spend time on.

0:05:390:05:43

We already like walking with the dog,

0:05:430:05:46

one thing I would quite like to do in the country,

0:05:460:05:48

I like doing craft work,

0:05:480:05:50

and I do craft work with the local school, where my grandchildren go,

0:05:500:05:54

and I'd like to learn to throw pottery, make pottery.

0:05:540:05:58

One of the interesting aspects of the move is to gear up a little bit more for my hobby,

0:05:580:06:05

which is sailing, and the latest acquisition, sailing wise,

0:06:050:06:10

is an Australian designed trimaran, which is quite portable

0:06:100:06:14

and I can bring it home and work on it in the winter.

0:06:140:06:19

They've got a pretty substantial list of preferences for the new property, inside and out.

0:06:190:06:25

I don't think we'd consider living in a house with low beams

0:06:250:06:29

so that you've got to bend your head, or houses which are, um,

0:06:290:06:34

very old and perhaps move a little bit in the night,

0:06:340:06:40

with death-watch beetle and suchlike.

0:06:400:06:43

What we need in our next home, be three bedrooms, two bathrooms,

0:06:430:06:48

a large study for John.

0:06:480:06:50

A good, spacious entrance hall,

0:06:500:06:52

a large kitchen dining room,

0:06:520:06:55

big enough to put a range in,

0:06:550:06:58

and somewhere that we can put in a wood burner, so we need a chimney.

0:06:580:07:02

And from my part, we'd like to have a separate access

0:07:020:07:08

to get articulated lorries in with loads of timber to heat the house.

0:07:080:07:13

And the land really needs to have a couple of buildings on,

0:07:130:07:17

like a Dutch barn or workshop,

0:07:170:07:20

so that we can service our harvesting equipment as and when,

0:07:200:07:25

and store our boat in the winter.

0:07:250:07:28

Just one last thing to check out,

0:07:280:07:30

and that's how much money they'd like to spend.

0:07:300:07:33

Our maximum budget is £550,000.

0:07:330:07:36

John and Sally would like us to concentrate our house search

0:07:450:07:49

to the west of Chester,

0:07:490:07:50

in the Welsh counties of Flintshire and Denbighshire.

0:07:500:07:54

We've got some fantastic houses in store for our buyers,

0:07:540:07:57

and, as usual, they'll need to guess the price before I reveal it.

0:07:570:08:02

Our final option is, of course, our mystery house,

0:08:020:08:05

which aims to challenge their preconceptions about their perfect home.

0:08:050:08:09

-Morning, guys.

-BOTH: Morning, Alistair.

0:08:090:08:12

-Beautiful morning in North East Wales.

-Certainly is.

0:08:120:08:14

You've brought the sunshine with you, but not from very far,

0:08:140:08:17

-cos you've only come from Shropshire.

-We have, yes, just over an hour.

0:08:170:08:20

Do you know this area very well?

0:08:200:08:22

We were married in this area.

0:08:220:08:23

-Really?

-Yeah.

0:08:230:08:25

-Ah, so, it's like a coming home.

-It is a little, yes.

0:08:250:08:27

And what are the qualities that you're looking for?

0:08:270:08:30

We'd like a little bit of land, up to about three acres,

0:08:300:08:32

not too much more, um, a nice building, Dutch barn would be great.

0:08:320:08:38

Right.

0:08:380:08:39

But as far as the house is concerned,

0:08:390:08:42

I think Sally will have the say on that.

0:08:420:08:44

I want a cosy home, I want a home with soul,

0:08:440:08:46

and I want to know that it's going to be ours forever.

0:08:460:08:51

-Sure.

-I shall know quite quickly, Alistair.

0:08:510:08:53

Well, they say that you can tell in the first few seconds.

0:08:530:08:56

-Yes.

-Which would save us a lot of time on the show!

0:08:560:08:59

I want to walk in and know that, in ten seconds or so,

0:08:590:09:04

that it'll be my home, when I wake up tomorrow it'll be my home.

0:09:040:09:09

Well, it's a beautiful day for property shopping, so, let's go, follow me.

0:09:090:09:12

Can't wait.

0:09:120:09:14

For a maximum budget of £550,000,

0:09:140:09:17

John and Sally are looking for a house to both relax in and work from.

0:09:170:09:21

With three bedrooms, two bathrooms,

0:09:220:09:25

an office for John to run the business,

0:09:250:09:27

a kitchen large enough for Sally's range cooker,

0:09:270:09:31

a wood burner, and up to three acres of land

0:09:310:09:34

with outbuildings for machinery maintenance and boat storage.

0:09:340:09:38

We've travelled 17 miles from Chester, close to Ruthin,

0:09:410:09:45

the county town of Denbighshire, located in the Vale of Clwyd.

0:09:450:09:50

The church dates back to 1310,

0:09:500:09:53

and there are amenities such as a regular market for local produce,

0:09:530:09:56

as well as a post office and a friendly, traditional inn.

0:09:560:10:00

Our first property is three miles outside Ruthin,

0:10:000:10:03

and is set in over two and a half acres of land,

0:10:030:10:06

with splendid views along the western slopes of the Clwydian hills.

0:10:060:10:12

Here we are, house number one.

0:10:120:10:13

-Well.

-Wow.

0:10:130:10:15

-It's a beautiful spot, isn't it?

-It certainly is, Alistair, it's fantastic.

0:10:150:10:18

Yeah, amazing.

0:10:180:10:19

Very charming, very quiet, and this is the house I want to show you.

0:10:190:10:24

-As you can see, it's a barn conversion.

-Yeah.

0:10:240:10:27

It's rather attractive, it's lovely stone, I love the colour stone.

0:10:270:10:31

It looks very interesting.

0:10:310:10:33

Well, yes, interesting, but on the small side.

0:10:330:10:37

-A bit small, OK.

-Yes.

0:10:370:10:38

Well, this property may not look spacious from the outside,

0:10:380:10:41

but appearances can be deceiving,

0:10:410:10:44

as they'll find when they step through the front door.

0:10:440:10:47

So, we come into this really nice hallway,

0:10:470:10:51

if you can shut the door, we'll go straight through into the kitchen.

0:10:510:10:55

Very spacious.

0:10:550:10:56

Because here you get an idea of the way they've done the conversion.

0:10:560:11:00

Oh, yes, that's rather nice,

0:11:000:11:02

it doesn't really feel like a barn conversion at all.

0:11:020:11:05

-Does it?

-No.

-Do you think so?

0:11:050:11:08

-No, it doesn't, no.

-It feels like a modern kitchen,

0:11:080:11:11

and I can see space to put a range cooker in.

0:11:110:11:14

There is a range, yes.

0:11:140:11:15

Which is quite essential for me, yes. I like it, I like it.

0:11:150:11:18

-Nice, big travertine floors.

-Love the floor.

0:11:180:11:21

-Do you like the floor?

-Yeah, yeah.

0:11:210:11:23

And I like the view of the cows through the window too.

0:11:230:11:26

The wonderful thing about this house is that it is really all about the views.

0:11:260:11:30

So, we were talking about getting the first feel in the first ten seconds, is it a...?

0:11:300:11:35

I don't know yet, it's a nice feel, it's a nice, cosy feel.

0:11:350:11:38

-You haven't ruled it out in the first ten seconds.

-Not yet, no, no, no.

0:11:380:11:43

With space for the range cooker a big tick for Sally,

0:11:430:11:46

and those stunning views a plus for both of them,

0:11:460:11:48

we're bypassing the dining room

0:11:480:11:51

to have a look at the equally cosy sitting room.

0:11:510:11:53

Well, again, a lovely view.

0:11:530:11:57

-Yeah.

-And French windows.

0:11:570:11:59

You've got this rather nice arched window looking over this way.

0:11:590:12:02

Small room, I mean,

0:12:020:12:04

this is half the size again of our present sitting room.

0:12:040:12:08

Right.

0:12:080:12:09

Um, and we do like a bit of space round us, don't we?

0:12:090:12:12

-Yeah.

-But it is...

0:12:120:12:14

It's not vast, it's not roomy and cavernous.

0:12:140:12:17

-It could be cosy.

-It's definitely going to be cosy, yeah.

0:12:170:12:21

That's another word that we keep using, but it's cosy.

0:12:210:12:23

Well, it is a word that certainly fits this house.

0:12:230:12:28

Also on the ground floor is a study,

0:12:280:12:30

and the hallway definitely has the spaciousness that Sally likes.

0:12:300:12:33

Upstairs there are three bedrooms - a bright double room for guests,

0:12:350:12:39

along with a good sized single room.

0:12:390:12:42

And there's a large bathroom too.

0:12:420:12:44

But we're heading to where they could be sleeping.

0:12:440:12:48

This is the master bedroom.

0:12:480:12:51

-This is a nice bedroom.

-Lots of windows.

0:12:510:12:53

It's got three aspects, four, five.

0:12:530:12:57

Quintuple aspect.

0:12:570:12:59

Yes, yes, yes, it's really, really nice.

0:12:590:13:03

What about you, John, what are your thoughts upstairs?

0:13:030:13:05

Yes, nice, it's a really lovely bedroom actually, yeah.

0:13:050:13:09

Outside continues to deliver,

0:13:090:13:12

with plenty of land on offer for all their forestry business needs.

0:13:120:13:16

In total, there's half an acre of gardens

0:13:170:13:20

and two acres of paddock with space for a large outbuilding,

0:13:200:13:23

although this may require permission from the local county council.

0:13:230:13:27

There's also a large garage where they could store their boat.

0:13:270:13:31

But what I wanted to surprise them with

0:13:310:13:33

is the area that sits above the garage.

0:13:330:13:35

Come on in, cos then there's this.

0:13:370:13:39

Well, that's a surprise.

0:13:390:13:42

Fully kitted out above the garage.

0:13:430:13:46

Yes.

0:13:460:13:47

You've got a little bathroom in there, storage here,

0:13:470:13:50

-and I thought this would make a lovely office.

-It certainly would.

0:13:500:13:54

It would make a lovely office, you've got a sofa,

0:13:540:13:56

you can make your own teas and coffees.

0:13:560:13:58

There's something nice about going to work, even though you're working at home.

0:13:580:14:02

Yes, John's worked at home all our married life

0:14:020:14:04

and we've had the office outside but this is nice.

0:14:040:14:06

I'm quite, quite taken with this.

0:14:060:14:11

Well, I'm glad they're pleased with this part of the property,

0:14:110:14:14

but the outside is the all important factor.

0:14:140:14:17

So, I think we should discuss the land.

0:14:170:14:19

So, you'd use this to store your bits?

0:14:190:14:21

Yeah, I would, I'd see whether we could put a building up,

0:14:210:14:25

just behind me on the boundary.

0:14:250:14:27

Right, so, that would be enough space for you, do you think?

0:14:270:14:30

-Definitely.

-Yes, yes.

0:14:300:14:31

So, how much do you think this package is on the market for?

0:14:310:14:34

I would say 480.

0:14:350:14:37

480, OK.

0:14:370:14:38

I would say 500.

0:14:380:14:40

OK, so, it's a little bit between,

0:14:410:14:43

it's actually on the market for 495.

0:14:430:14:45

-Right.

-So, there's lots to think about, but we haven't seen everything,

0:14:450:14:49

so I'd like you to walk around the house, have a look in the garage,

0:14:490:14:53

and I'll meet you out the front, and we can go on to the next house.

0:14:530:14:55

-OK.

-Thank you, Alistair.

0:14:550:14:57

Not a problem.

0:14:570:14:58

At £495,000 this property is well within their budget,

0:14:590:15:04

offering a large kitchen with room for a range cooker,

0:15:040:15:08

three bedrooms, self contained office space for John,

0:15:080:15:12

a garage for storing their boat,

0:15:120:15:14

and over two and a half acres of land for business use.

0:15:140:15:17

When we first arrived here I thought the setting was fabulous,

0:15:170:15:20

we'd got the lovely Clwyd valley going down towards the south,

0:15:200:15:24

then we'd got the lush farmland in the bottom of the valley on the west of the property.

0:15:240:15:30

So, you couldn't really ask for anything more.

0:15:300:15:32

When I first saw it, and when I first saw the house,

0:15:320:15:36

to be honest, I didn't really like it then very much.

0:15:360:15:38

But, came inside and it did improve.

0:15:380:15:42

I can see loads of things I could do to it

0:15:420:15:45

but I don't even know at the end of all that, it would be my dream home.

0:15:450:15:51

Absolutely beautiful, I never get to go to Wales,

0:15:510:15:55

Jools always goes to Wales, but I'm a convert.

0:15:550:15:58

I'm a convert to the Vale here, it's a beautiful spot.

0:15:580:16:02

Glad to hear it.

0:16:020:16:03

-Good, let's go see house number two.

-Great.

0:16:030:16:05

The picturesque market town of Denbigh is one of the most historic in North East Wales,

0:16:130:16:17

with the ruins of its castle dominating the skyline.

0:16:170:16:21

During Tudor and Stuart times,

0:16:230:16:24

the town prospered as a market and business centre,

0:16:240:16:28

indeed, it was a place of such renown

0:16:280:16:29

that Elizabeth I made her favourite courtier, Robert Dudley,

0:16:290:16:34

the Lord of Denbigh until his death in 1588.

0:16:340:16:37

The Denbigh area, and particularly the nearby town of Buckley,

0:16:370:16:42

became an industrial heartland for pottery between the 17th and 19th century,

0:16:420:16:47

when clay was extensively mined here.

0:16:470:16:50

And by the early 19th century, there were 14 potteries across the town.

0:16:500:16:54

Earlier in the week, we sent John and Sally,

0:16:540:16:57

who's keen to try her hand at pottery,

0:16:570:16:59

for a beginners lesson with local expert Alan Hughes,

0:16:590:17:03

who has been producing earthenware and stoneware here for 30 years.

0:17:030:17:08

Well, today I'm going to be throwing earthenware plates.

0:17:080:17:10

We start off with a weighed out ball,

0:17:100:17:13

put some water on to lubricate it,

0:17:130:17:15

and then you lock your hands on the clay

0:17:150:17:18

and make it go into the centre.

0:17:180:17:20

Now, keeping it centred with your left hand,

0:17:200:17:23

you push your fingers down the centre and pull out.

0:17:230:17:25

Lifting it underneath, you make the rim.

0:17:300:17:34

And then you make the sides of the plate.

0:17:350:17:37

And that's it.

0:17:380:17:40

It's time for Sally to have a go.

0:17:400:17:42

Ball of clay,

0:17:420:17:44

throw it into the centre of the wheel head.

0:17:440:17:46

Lovely, now, a bit of water,

0:17:460:17:49

put your elbows in to your tummy,

0:17:490:17:52

lock your hands and your thumbs on top.

0:17:520:17:54

Don't let it push you, you push it.

0:17:540:17:57

You're the boss.

0:17:570:17:59

That's great stuff.

0:17:590:18:00

Oh, that's fantastic.

0:18:000:18:03

You've centred it beautifully, you're a natural.

0:18:030:18:06

-Go down, that's it.

-Oh!

0:18:060:18:08

Now, just squeeze gently and draw it towards you this way.

0:18:080:18:11

-That's made your rim.

-This is wonderful.

0:18:110:18:13

Take this hand off.

0:18:130:18:15

I've never seen anyone learn to centre that quickly!

0:18:180:18:20

-Let go.

-Let go?

0:18:200:18:22

Yeah, you're enjoying yourself too much.

0:18:220:18:24

Oh, I know.

0:18:240:18:25

These plates are the simplest shape to throw,

0:18:250:18:28

and Alan can produce up to 100 of them in an hour.

0:18:280:18:32

Brilliant, well done, you, excellent.

0:18:320:18:35

That was fantastic, oh, wonderful.

0:18:350:18:37

Oh.

0:18:370:18:39

-You're hooked.

-Yes. Can I come as an apprentice?

0:18:390:18:42

It is addictive, you know.

0:18:420:18:43

It takes around two days for a plate to harden enough for decoration.

0:18:430:18:48

To prepare the surface,

0:18:480:18:49

a water and clay mix called slip is poured on to the plate.

0:18:490:18:54

Any excess is sponged off,

0:18:540:18:55

then the plate is ready for the next step, the pattern.

0:18:550:18:59

Place it on the wheel, centre it,

0:18:590:19:01

and then this has a white slip in it,

0:19:010:19:04

which is a white clay mixed with water,

0:19:040:19:07

and we trail it onto the wet black slip.

0:19:070:19:10

That was fast.

0:19:100:19:11

Ah, everything in pottery has to be fast, time is money.

0:19:110:19:16

You can have lots of fun making all sorts of little patterns.

0:19:180:19:22

It's magic.

0:19:240:19:25

And you can use different coloured slips

0:19:250:19:28

and put one on top of the other.

0:19:280:19:29

Having done that, we simply tap it.

0:19:290:19:31

And that's finished.

0:19:330:19:35

The plate is then left to dry before its first firing

0:19:350:19:38

at a temperature of 1,100 degrees Celsius.

0:19:380:19:41

All Alan's ceramics are thrown on a traditional potter's wheel,

0:19:410:19:45

but his one concession to modern technology is a fast-fire electric kiln.

0:19:450:19:50

And there's, there's our firing all ready to come out, looks OK.

0:19:500:19:55

This is the sort of plate you've just been making,

0:19:550:19:59

so, that's how it comes out when it's finished.

0:19:590:20:01

-Oh, I like the colour.

-All magic, Alan.

0:20:010:20:03

As you can see, it's a nice honey colour where the white slip was,

0:20:030:20:06

and the chocolate colour's gone to black.

0:20:060:20:08

-Alan, you're magic.

-Pottery is magic.

0:20:080:20:11

So, with Sally's pottery ambitions all fired up,

0:20:110:20:15

hopefully the next property we view can cast its spell over both of them.

0:20:150:20:19

We've travelled 16 miles from Chester to the Flintshire

0:20:260:20:29

market town of Caerwys,

0:20:290:20:31

it has a church with a late 13th century tower and nave,

0:20:310:20:35

as well as day to day essentials such as a pharmacy, post office

0:20:350:20:38

and a traditional pub set in a Grade II listed 16th century building.

0:20:380:20:44

Just down the road in the old mining village of Lixwm is property number two.

0:20:440:20:50

A 1990s build that's been recently remodelled.

0:20:500:20:52

So, here we are, house number two.

0:20:540:20:56

Well, that's rather nice, Alistair.

0:20:580:21:00

-Yeah?

-Very nice.

-Yes, yes.

0:21:000:21:02

Oh, big smiles on your faces, that's good.

0:21:020:21:04

Quite a different offering, this is a much more modern property.

0:21:040:21:08

It's actually just 20 years old.

0:21:080:21:09

Yeah, yeah.

0:21:090:21:11

First impressions?

0:21:110:21:12

Very nice, very good, very acceptable.

0:21:120:21:17

Attractive.

0:21:170:21:18

There's three quite low key adjectives,

0:21:180:21:21

nice, good and acceptable.

0:21:210:21:22

Um...

0:21:220:21:23

..seven out of ten, so far, and we're only outside,

0:21:250:21:28

so, you're in the right direction there, Alistair.

0:21:280:21:30

That's high praise from you, those don't come easily.

0:21:300:21:32

No, they don't.

0:21:320:21:34

Best get inside while the compliments are flowing from Sally,

0:21:340:21:37

and I've got a feeling she's going to love what she sees.

0:21:370:21:41

So, in we come.

0:21:420:21:43

So, let's go straight here into the sitting room.

0:21:460:21:49

What a fantastic room, it's light.

0:21:490:21:54

A nice pair of French doors there, and three aspects of light coming in.

0:21:540:21:58

It's what I would call a bonny room.

0:21:580:22:01

-Ah, a bonny room, excellent.

-Yes.

0:22:010:22:04

And a proper fire here.

0:22:040:22:05

Yes, could we put a wood burner in there, do you think, Alistair?

0:22:050:22:08

Of course. So, you're getting a good vibe?

0:22:080:22:10

-Yes.

-Really?

-Yeah.

0:22:100:22:12

-Oh, cautious, I can see you're like...

-Careful.

0:22:120:22:15

..Careful, a little panting there.

0:22:150:22:18

Could this be the one?

0:22:180:22:19

It could be, it could be, yes.

0:22:190:22:21

Well, I think I know how to change "could be" into "will be".

0:22:210:22:24

-I want to go straight in here.

-Spacious.

0:22:240:22:27

This is your kitchen.

0:22:270:22:29

-Ooh!

-Oh, oh!

0:22:290:22:30

A bit bigger than the last one, isn't it?

0:22:300:22:33

It certainly is, it certainly is, yes.

0:22:330:22:36

-I could do things in here, Alistair.

-Yeah?

0:22:360:22:39

I can see a nice range cooker over there, and eating here, cooking, yes.

0:22:390:22:46

-What do you think, John?

-I think it's excellent, excellent.

0:22:460:22:49

Well, the really great thing about this kitchen is,

0:22:490:22:51

if you look behind you there's a snug

0:22:510:22:53

which gets lots of lovely afternoon light, so you can have your tea.

0:22:530:22:58

We've also got this outside room,

0:22:580:23:00

so you can bring your dogs in there, the boots and everything,

0:23:000:23:03

and in here, all your white goods, a utility room.

0:23:030:23:07

Wonderful, that is good.

0:23:070:23:08

So, sealed off.

0:23:080:23:10

So, points?

0:23:100:23:12

I'm going to shock you here now, a nine and a half.

0:23:120:23:16

-Oh!

-Oh, ho, ho!

0:23:160:23:17

Zowee-wowee!

0:23:170:23:19

-We're excited.

-Yeah.

0:23:190:23:20

While the going's good, we're heading upstairs

0:23:200:23:23

to see if this house can keep scoring highly.

0:23:230:23:25

And there's four very good sized bedrooms up here,

0:23:250:23:30

two bright double rooms for guests,

0:23:300:23:32

and a neat twin room with wooden flooring.

0:23:320:23:34

All of which share a family bathroom with a shower cubicle.

0:23:340:23:38

Then we come to a very impressive main bedroom,

0:23:380:23:41

which is complete with an ensuite shower room.

0:23:410:23:43

If you come over here

0:23:430:23:45

you get a sense of the full extent of your master suite.

0:23:450:23:50

Goodness me, I can see an ensuite.

0:23:500:23:53

-Yeah, you've got an ensuite.

-Thank you.

0:23:530:23:55

And all this lovely storage for shoes.

0:23:550:23:58

We're coming up to a ten again.

0:23:580:24:00

-Ah.

-Towards it, not quite, but we're nearly there.

0:24:000:24:02

-Pushing the ten boundary.

-Nearly.

0:24:020:24:04

I'm really delighted that Sally is so enthused about this property,

0:24:040:24:08

but I know exactly what could push her rating up even higher,

0:24:080:24:11

and it's on the way outside to the garden.

0:24:110:24:14

Oh, a nice separate dining room.

0:24:160:24:19

Nice dining room, and then this. Step in.

0:24:190:24:23

Alistair, you're getting, it's just getting better and better, isn't it?

0:24:230:24:28

This is a lovely, big dining room, big size,

0:24:280:24:30

and it sweeps into this beautiful conservatory.

0:24:300:24:33

And it's a nice shaped conservatory, isn't it?

0:24:330:24:36

Well, this is what runs all the way down,

0:24:360:24:38

it's separated there by those doors,

0:24:380:24:40

but actually on the other side is a continuation of the conservatory

0:24:400:24:43

and that's the doggy/utility room.

0:24:430:24:44

That's an excellent idea, isn't it?

0:24:440:24:47

Well, this is another bonny room, is all I can say.

0:24:470:24:49

I'm coming to appreciate the "bonny" in your lexicon

0:24:490:24:53

-is like "amazing" in everybody else's.

-Yes.

0:24:530:24:57

I think we've almost got a sale here

0:24:570:24:59

and the outside could seal the deal.

0:24:590:25:02

A short walk from the house is the self-contained annexe,

0:25:020:25:05

which has plenty of space for that office.

0:25:050:25:08

And it has a wood burner too - very bonny!

0:25:080:25:11

Along with a well equipped kitchen,

0:25:110:25:13

it also provides extra accommodation in the form of a double bedroom

0:25:130:25:17

with a handy bathroom.

0:25:170:25:20

Behind it there are some outbuildings

0:25:200:25:22

which might work as storage for wood or the boat,

0:25:220:25:24

and in the paddock there's enough space to carry out maintenance work.

0:25:240:25:28

Away from the business, there's also a patio area for leisure.

0:25:280:25:33

OK, well, I suppose the crunch is, how much does it cost.

0:25:330:25:36

Well, I'm going to go in somewhere around, say, 530.

0:25:360:25:40

What about you, Sally?

0:25:400:25:41

I'm going to go for exactly the same as the first one, 500.

0:25:410:25:46

-500?

-Yes.

0:25:460:25:48

Well, in this instance, Sally,

0:25:480:25:50

you are exactly right, it's on at just

0:25:500:25:55

a pound or two under 500,000 -

0:25:550:25:58

499,950,

0:25:580:26:00

and it seems it gets a lot higher rating.

0:26:000:26:03

-Oh, yes.

-Oh!

0:26:030:26:05

If I might say it, this one has gobsmacked me.

0:26:060:26:09

-Aww!

-Oh, God, wow!

0:26:090:26:11

But you haven't seen it all, you've got to explore, I mean,

0:26:110:26:14

really take a look at the annexe cos it's quite impressive.

0:26:140:26:17

I will see you out the front.

0:26:170:26:19

-Yeah.

-Have a good explore.

0:26:190:26:20

-Thank you.

-See you later, Alistair.

0:26:200:26:22

Gobsmacked, did you hear that?

0:26:220:26:25

Sally's gobsmacked, and I heard nines, nine and a halves,

0:26:250:26:28

nine and three quarters out of ten.

0:26:280:26:31

I think we may have done it, I think we may have done it.

0:26:310:26:35

Well within budget at a shade under £500,000,

0:26:370:26:40

this bonny property gives them absolutely everything they've dreamed of.

0:26:400:26:45

A lovely social reception space with log burner potential,

0:26:450:26:49

and a kitchen with range cooker,

0:26:490:26:51

four bedrooms and two bathrooms,

0:26:510:26:53

along with a separate annexe that could serve as business premises.

0:26:530:26:58

Outside, there's also two and a half acres of land with outbuildings.

0:26:580:27:02

It's a great shed there, Sal.

0:27:040:27:05

-Wow.

-Plenty of storage.

0:27:050:27:08

How many tonnes of wood could you get in there, John?

0:27:080:27:10

40, 50, maybe 100.

0:27:100:27:13

Well, this house, as a house,

0:27:130:27:16

contains all the ingredients that Sally would want,

0:27:160:27:19

and, of course, as far as I'm concerned,

0:27:190:27:22

we've got some buildings down the bottom that we can adapt

0:27:220:27:25

and a bit of land out the back which is perfect for storage.

0:27:250:27:30

It gives me a certain contentment

0:27:300:27:32

because I can see that Sally would enjoy living here

0:27:320:27:35

and, um, it's, you know, it's a house that we could settle in.

0:27:350:27:40

And perhaps the last move that we make.

0:27:400:27:42

If I'm going to score this house out of ten from my heart,

0:27:420:27:45

it would be nine and a half.

0:27:450:27:47

I'm very comfortable here, very, I feel almost as if I'm living here.

0:27:480:27:53

Naughty, that, isn't it, really?

0:27:540:27:57

Look at that, it's like you're exiting John and Sally's house.

0:27:590:28:02

-You never know.

-Really?

0:28:020:28:04

-Good vibes?

-Yes.

-Excellent.

0:28:040:28:07

That's a good note to finish the day on.

0:28:070:28:09

A perfect end to our first day of house hunting,

0:28:180:28:21

as the sun sets over the spectacular scenery of the Welsh countryside.

0:28:210:28:26

John and Sally run their own forestry business in Shrewsbury, Shropshire.

0:28:320:28:36

With a budget of £550,000,

0:28:360:28:38

they're hoping to celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary

0:28:380:28:43

in a new home in the countryside of North East Wales.

0:28:430:28:47

So far we've managed to really grab their attention with one of our properties,

0:28:470:28:51

but coming up, they prepare to get all familiar with the mystery house.

0:28:510:28:55

You see it as a Sally house. Do you see it as a John house?

0:28:550:28:58

Um, I do, actually, yeah.

0:28:580:29:00

And I try my hand at the art of campanology.

0:29:000:29:04

I've noticed on this series that the mystery house has often helped us

0:29:070:29:11

out of a sticky situation, saved the day at the last minute.

0:29:110:29:14

But on this show, I think we've already given John and Sally

0:29:140:29:17

exactly what they want, so they don't need saving.

0:29:170:29:21

So the mystery house for us is a bit more of a punt.

0:29:210:29:23

It still has all the beautiful Welsh landscape,

0:29:230:29:26

but it has one thing they're not so keen on.

0:29:260:29:31

A mere six miles from Chester is the Flintshire town of Mold.

0:29:340:29:38

A busy community that grew up around its Norman castle.

0:29:380:29:41

Its attractions include a 15th century church,

0:29:410:29:45

as well as the usual high street amenities

0:29:450:29:47

such as pubs and shops aplenty.

0:29:470:29:49

A couple of miles south-west of Mold,

0:29:490:29:52

close to the village of Llanferres, is our mystery house,

0:29:520:29:56

an 18th century cottage, lying at the end of its own private track

0:29:560:30:00

and surrounded by open countryside.

0:30:000:30:02

So this is the mystery house.

0:30:040:30:06

It is quite old.

0:30:060:30:10

Doesn't look it from the outside, but actually,

0:30:100:30:12

the kernel of the house is from 1799.

0:30:120:30:15

-Gosh.

-A few ghosts in there, Alistair.

0:30:150:30:17

Yeah, this is the mystery, really, cos we're showing you something

0:30:170:30:20

that you didn't really express an interest in.

0:30:200:30:22

-It is essentially a period property.

-BOTH: Right.

0:30:220:30:25

What are your first impressions?

0:30:250:30:27

Quite small. Pretty, quite small.

0:30:280:30:31

-Quaint.

-Quaint.

-Quaint.

0:30:310:30:33

What does that decode as?

0:30:330:30:35

-Interesting.

-Oh, that's even worse!

0:30:360:30:39

Quaint and interesting. They strike fear into an estate agent's heart.

0:30:390:30:44

It is quaint, yeah, and the view is splendid.

0:30:450:30:48

I don't know, it's one of those,

0:30:480:30:50

you don't know till you get inside, really.

0:30:500:30:52

'Well, I hope Sally is right, and the enthusiasm of yesterday returns

0:30:520:30:56

'once they get inside this quirky property,

0:30:560:30:58

'which is a mix of old alongside the modern they prefer.'

0:30:580:31:02

We're going to go through into here,

0:31:030:31:06

straight into the most modern part of the house, this is from 2002,

0:31:060:31:09

and this extension, actually, even more recently.

0:31:090:31:12

Very individual, isn't it? It's very, very...

0:31:120:31:15

-What about you, John?

-Yeah, I see it as a Sally house.

0:31:150:31:19

There's, you know, little nooks and crannies everywhere and it's,

0:31:190:31:24

yes, it's very homely.

0:31:240:31:25

You see it as a Sally house. Do you see it as a John house?

0:31:250:31:28

Erm, I do actually, yeah.

0:31:280:31:30

I mean, fantastic view out of the window here.

0:31:300:31:34

'And there are more spectacular views of the Clwyd Valley

0:31:340:31:37

'from the beautiful conservatory area, which should appeal to Sally.

0:31:370:31:41

'But we're here to challenge their preconceptions

0:31:410:31:43

'about period properties,

0:31:430:31:45

'so let's move on to the older part of the house.'

0:31:450:31:48

This is actually the original cottage.

0:31:480:31:50

It was just this width, very small,

0:31:500:31:54

and the present owner dug out the original hearth

0:31:540:31:58

and they've turned this into the snug.

0:31:580:32:00

The snug heart of the home.

0:32:000:32:02

Yes, it's snug. It is snug.

0:32:020:32:05

-It's nice, it's nicely snug, but...

-But?

0:32:050:32:08

-I find it too snug.

-Too snug.

0:32:100:32:13

-John?

-No, I quite like the room, actually, because of the wood burner

0:32:130:32:17

and the fireplace. I think, in the winter,

0:32:170:32:19

I can imagine the heat coming out of that

0:32:190:32:21

and you'd be, everything'd be locked down and...

0:32:210:32:23

It would be a winter room. You're right, John.

0:32:230:32:25

It would be cosy and comfortable and very warm.

0:32:250:32:28

'John's trying his best, but maybe the open plan family room

0:32:280:32:32

'with dining area and kitchen will get a stronger reaction from Sally.'

0:32:320:32:36

-Yes, now this is an improvement.

-Oh, your face has lit up.

0:32:370:32:42

-Yes, yes, this is lovely.

-You'd have to put your range in.

0:32:420:32:44

Well, I was just looking over there to see

0:32:440:32:47

-if there was...it's an outside wall, isn't it?

-Mmm, yeah.

0:32:470:32:50

And I could put a range on there.

0:32:500:32:51

What do you think about this room, John?

0:32:510:32:54

I think it's wonderfully light and it's a homely room, definitely.

0:32:540:32:59

And considering that it was really just that room next door initially,

0:32:590:33:02

and all these extensions, I think they've been tremendously well done.

0:33:020:33:06

Clever, clever.

0:33:060:33:07

'With Sally considering where to put her range cooker,

0:33:070:33:10

'things are definitely looking up for this lovely property.

0:33:100:33:13

'And I think upstairs won't disappoint.

0:33:130:33:16

'Here, there are three very good sized double bedrooms,

0:33:160:33:19

'all dual aspect, with amazing unspoilt views,

0:33:190:33:22

'some of which can be seen through the unique, round feature windows.

0:33:220:33:26

'There's also the family bathroom.

0:33:260:33:29

'But we're heading to the room that John and Sally

0:33:290:33:31

'could be calling their own.'

0:33:310:33:33

This has its own ensuite, and of course, upstairs,

0:33:330:33:36

everything revolves around these amazing views.

0:33:360:33:40

They certainly do. No, it's a nice little room. Although it looks old,

0:33:400:33:43

nothing seems to be falling to bits.

0:33:430:33:46

-It looks very good.

-Well, it's a more compact, snug, sort of cosy house.

0:33:460:33:52

-Mmm.

-Obviously, yesterday was such a big hit,

0:33:520:33:55

quite a hard act to follow, but...

0:33:550:33:57

It is, really. I'm afraid to say it is.

0:33:570:33:59

'Just one part of this property left,

0:33:590:34:02

'and that's the one-and-a-half acres of land that surround it.

0:34:020:34:06

'As well as a garden, there's a huge amount of yard

0:34:060:34:08

'and parking space for machinery maintenance.

0:34:080:34:11

'There's also a whole host of outbuildings,

0:34:110:34:13

'including a double garage for the boat,

0:34:130:34:15

'open front units for wood storage,

0:34:150:34:18

'a summer house and a small, timber-built office.'

0:34:180:34:22

OK, so the big question, how much does it cost?

0:34:220:34:24

I would put a price on 400.

0:34:260:34:30

I'm going to go for rather low and say 399.

0:34:300:34:33

It's actually on the market for...

0:34:330:34:36

-454,000.

-Oh!

-Good lord, yeah, yeah.

0:34:360:34:40

Quite a bit higher than your guess,

0:34:400:34:42

but I think you were bewitched by yesterday's property.

0:34:420:34:44

But have another look around,

0:34:440:34:46

particularly around the grounds and the garden.

0:34:460:34:49

Thanks, Alistair.

0:34:490:34:50

For £454,000, this house, in its idyllic setting,

0:34:520:34:57

is well within their budget.

0:34:570:34:59

It offers a wood burner in the cosy lounge,

0:34:590:35:02

potential for a range in the kitchen,

0:35:020:35:04

three bedrooms, two bathrooms

0:35:040:35:07

and almost two acres of land,

0:35:070:35:09

with outbuildings for storage and office use.

0:35:090:35:12

It's a superb place, isn't it, with the views and...

0:35:120:35:15

Oh, the view is stupendous.

0:35:150:35:18

And the house, the more I went in it, the more I got used to it

0:35:180:35:21

and liked it, but I think this access

0:35:210:35:23

is going to be the stumbling block here, isn't it?

0:35:230:35:26

-It is...

-It's so steep.

0:35:260:35:28

As a mystery house, I find it very interesting.

0:35:280:35:31

It is a quirky house and the more you go around it,

0:35:310:35:35

the more interesting it becomes.

0:35:350:35:37

Upstairs, again, it's totally different to downstairs,

0:35:370:35:41

and each bedroom has got several aspects to it,

0:35:410:35:45

and I love the round windows at each end of the building.

0:35:450:35:47

If we were just looking for a home

0:35:470:35:49

and the business wasn't involved, I'm sure that this would be

0:35:490:35:52

a perfect little hideaway for us to live in.

0:35:520:35:56

It was a mystery, and when I first saw it, I thought, "Good grief.

0:35:560:36:01

"This is going to be not for me."

0:36:020:36:05

But actually, the more I saw it, the more I liked it.

0:36:050:36:09

I like the view and I like the fact it's nearer to Chester,

0:36:090:36:13

but I don't think the whole thing comes together.

0:36:130:36:17

-How are you doing, guys?

-Fine, thank you, Alistair.

0:36:170:36:21

-Sudden change of heart?

-Not really, no. Not really.

0:36:210:36:24

-It did get better as we went round.

-Yeah, yeah.

-Good.

0:36:240:36:29

Well, let's regroup, think about all the houses we've seen,

0:36:290:36:33

have a cup of tea. This way.

0:36:330:36:35

The Church of St Matthew is the oldest parish church

0:36:420:36:44

in the Flintshire town of Buckley.

0:36:440:36:47

Built in 1822, it was updated in the early 1900s,

0:36:470:36:51

around the same time as the North Wales Association

0:36:510:36:54

of Church Bell Ringers was founded in Bangor, Gwynedd.

0:36:540:36:57

Most of its members were originally railway workers,

0:36:590:37:02

but nowadays they come from a whole range of backgrounds,

0:37:020:37:05

with around 300 ringers in the association,

0:37:050:37:07

which encompasses 48 bell towers.

0:37:070:37:11

I've come to meet expert campanologist Geoff Parting,

0:37:110:37:14

who's been bell ringing since he was 13 years old,

0:37:140:37:18

and he's going to teach me more about this rather unique art.

0:37:180:37:22

The peal of eight bells in the tower was cast

0:37:220:37:25

by John Taylor & Sons of Loughborough,

0:37:250:37:28

in proportions specified by the designer of Big Ben.

0:37:280:37:32

The church has a dozen bell ringers,

0:37:320:37:35

but only six to eight are needed at any one time.

0:37:350:37:37

Come on in. This is Bernard, he's a Master of the Tower.

0:37:370:37:40

Master of the Tower?

0:37:400:37:41

You're the Captain of the Tower, you're the Master of the Tower.

0:37:410:37:44

Well, if I just explain to you what the bell looks like up in the top,

0:37:440:37:48

-and how it works.

-So you've got eight bells.

-Eight bells up there, yes.

0:37:480:37:52

The bell is mounted on a wood frame,

0:37:520:37:53

or iron frame,

0:37:530:37:55

and these are the bearings

0:37:550:37:57

each side, and gudgeon pins

0:37:570:37:59

run into the bearings, which allows the bell to swing.

0:37:590:38:02

Then we've got the wheel, bolted onto a headstock,

0:38:020:38:05

which is called a headstock.

0:38:050:38:07

This is a stay, and then there's the rope through a gudgeon hole.

0:38:070:38:12

And when you pull the bell, it turns through 360 degrees,

0:38:120:38:15

the stay hits what we call the slider, over there.

0:38:150:38:21

And that stops it going any further.

0:38:210:38:23

When we pull the bell down again, like this, it comes over that way.

0:38:230:38:27

So each ring is a ring on both ways. Ring going up and ring going down.

0:38:270:38:32

Yes. Handstroke and backstroke, you call it.

0:38:320:38:34

'When ringing, the best method is to allow the weight of the bell

0:38:340:38:39

'to do most of the work. You give the rope a sharp pull

0:38:390:38:42

'to start it on its journey down,

0:38:420:38:43

'and keep it as straight as possible.'

0:38:430:38:45

Two hands on the sally, this is wool which is woven into the rope strands.

0:38:450:38:51

Sally, mmm-hmm.

0:38:510:38:52

So then I pull that down like that, I let the rope pull my arms up.

0:38:520:38:56

Now I've just gone over a balance, like that, OK?

0:38:570:39:01

And I come all the way down with my arms.

0:39:010:39:03

BELL RINGS

0:39:030:39:05

OK, so the sally goes up and then the sally comes down.

0:39:050:39:08

-Yeah, so it's a case of...

-Pull the sally down.

0:39:080:39:12

I'm below the balance now.

0:39:120:39:13

That's the pace we would be ringing at if we've got the...

0:39:130:39:17

all the eight going.

0:39:170:39:19

'So it's time for me to try my hand at the campanologist's art,

0:39:190:39:23

'and I'm poised for action.'

0:39:230:39:25

-OK, so I'm going to release...?

-Pull, go on.

0:39:250:39:29

-BELL RINGS Down and catch.

-Ah!

0:39:290:39:31

-BELL RINGS

-Whoa!

0:39:310:39:33

Ah, don't look up.

0:39:330:39:35

-Don't look up, don't look up.

-Don't look up, straight down.

0:39:350:39:38

It's going a bit faster than it was before. Oi!

0:39:380:39:41

-BELL RINGS

-OK, calm, Alistair, calm.

-Catch.

0:39:410:39:44

BELL RINGS That's it.

0:39:440:39:47

That's it. Good one.

0:39:470:39:50

You did that one on your own.

0:39:500:39:52

BELL RINGS

0:39:520:39:55

All right, OK, let's have a break of this. So how do I stop it?

0:39:550:39:59

-Another tug.

-Pull again. We have to start again.

-OK.

0:39:590:40:03

'After being shown the ropes in the tower,

0:40:030:40:05

'I discover another method to ring out a tune

0:40:050:40:08

'through hammers attached to the bells,

0:40:080:40:10

'worked by this chiming apparatus.

0:40:100:40:12

'This is known as clocking the bell rather than ringing.'

0:40:120:40:16

SEVERAL BELLS CHIME

0:40:160:40:19

Ya-a-ay!

0:40:210:40:22

APPLAUSE

0:40:220:40:25

He-e-ey!

0:40:250:40:26

'I rather enjoyed that.'

0:40:260:40:28

Those bells are loud! And now, it is time to find out which house

0:40:300:40:35

John and Sally found most ap-peal-ing.

0:40:350:40:39

Funny.

0:40:390:40:41

Hello, guys. Ah, you've found the nice, warm fire.

0:40:460:40:49

-It's been a bit nippy here in Wales, hasn't it?

-It has.

0:40:490:40:53

Let's review, shall we? What did you think of the first one?

0:40:530:40:56

I think the first one, probably, the house as such

0:40:560:41:01

wouldn't have appealed to Sally,

0:41:010:41:03

but obviously the location was fantastic.

0:41:030:41:05

But the biggest killer of that was the distance from Chester.

0:41:050:41:10

Got to have some compromise, cos I would like to live much nearer

0:41:100:41:14

to Chester, so we've got to have a house that I really like.

0:41:140:41:17

And the second house. Now, this was a bit more impressive.

0:41:170:41:21

Purpose-built house, four bedrooms, in the middle of its plot.

0:41:210:41:25

Access for awkward vehicles, big vehicles.

0:41:250:41:28

Perfect in many, many ways.

0:41:280:41:30

I still think it's fantastic, and as John said, it's a lovely house,

0:41:300:41:35

there's not much maintenance to do in the future.

0:41:350:41:38

-It's got all we need, it's got everything for John, hasn't it?

-Yeah.

0:41:380:41:42

And it's not too far from Chester.

0:41:420:41:46

What about the mystery house, cos that was a bit of a curveball

0:41:460:41:48

in the sense that it was a period property.

0:41:480:41:50

Well, as I think I've said, when I arrived I thought, "Good grief."

0:41:500:41:54

But, it got better, it improved, and had we been a lot younger,

0:41:550:42:00

it would have been very much a John and Sally house, wouldn't it?

0:42:000:42:05

-Yeah, absolutely.

-But the access killed it.

0:42:050:42:07

We wouldn't get lorries up there, but the view was outstanding

0:42:070:42:11

of the back of the Berwyns and Moel Famau. Excellent.

0:42:110:42:16

You talked a lot about the Sally and John house.

0:42:160:42:19

Do you have an idea what that might be in 2011?

0:42:190:42:21

Probably quite near to the house, the number two house, yesterday.

0:42:210:42:26

-Quite near, isn't it?

-Perhaps it IS the number two house?

-Could well be.
