This iconic breakwater has been protecting the harbour here | 0:00:01 | 0:00:04
from the unpredictable power of the sea for over 700 years. | 0:00:04 | 0:00:09
It's a location so loved by one of Britain's most famous female writers | 0:00:09 | 0:00:13
she based one of her best-known novels here. | 0:00:13 | 0:00:16
So who was she? Where am I? Find out in just a moment. | 0:00:16 | 0:00:21
On today's show, I'll be helping a couple strike the right chord | 0:00:50 | 0:00:54
as they get set to create a new life in Dorset. | 0:00:54 | 0:00:57
One of the houses has some hidden surprises. | 0:00:57 | 0:01:01
You caught us out on this one. | 0:01:01 | 0:01:03
I didn't think this belonged to that property. | 0:01:03 | 0:01:05
Then our buyers wage war at the mystery house. | 0:01:05 | 0:01:10
-You can fight over it once we're not around. -And we will. | 0:01:10 | 0:01:13
Welcome to Dorset and the Cobb in Lyme Regis. | 0:01:16 | 0:01:19
This part of the country has been winning over the hearts of visitors for centuries | 0:01:19 | 0:01:25
including that of the author Jane Austen, | 0:01:25 | 0:01:27
who based her novel Persuasion around this glorious setting. | 0:01:27 | 0:01:32
The charming appeal of this area is also extended throughout the county. | 0:01:32 | 0:01:36
The coastal county of Dorset | 0:01:39 | 0:01:40
is surrounded by Wiltshire and Somerset to the north | 0:01:40 | 0:01:44
and Devon to the west. | 0:01:44 | 0:01:46
As one of the gateway counties to the south west of England, | 0:01:46 | 0:01:49
40% of Dorset falls within designated areas of natural beauty. | 0:01:49 | 0:01:54
From the crumbling fossil bearing cliffs of the Jurassic Coast, | 0:01:54 | 0:01:58
to the marshes and heathland, there are stunning landscapes aplenty. | 0:01:58 | 0:02:02
Its countryside is home to well preserved hamlets and villages | 0:02:02 | 0:02:06
and historic landmarks such as Corfe Castle and Highcliffe. | 0:02:06 | 0:02:10
Dorset also has a rich literary heritage. | 0:02:10 | 0:02:13
As well as being a backdrop to Jane Austen's Persuasion, | 0:02:13 | 0:02:17
both John Fowles and Thomas Hardy called this county home. | 0:02:17 | 0:02:21
If you are a lover of the great outdoors, Dorset offers | 0:02:21 | 0:02:24
some of the finest windsurfing and sailing locations in the UK. | 0:02:24 | 0:02:28
With so much on offer it's no wonder Dorset's house prices | 0:02:33 | 0:02:36
are almost £60,000 above the national average. | 0:02:36 | 0:02:41
The going rate for a detached property here | 0:02:41 | 0:02:44
is just over £315,000. | 0:02:44 | 0:02:46
Broadly speaking, | 0:02:46 | 0:02:48
house prices become cheaper the further west you go, | 0:02:48 | 0:02:51
away from hotspots such as Poole Harbour and Sandbanks. | 0:02:51 | 0:02:55
But homes in the villages west of Dorchester such as West Stafford | 0:02:55 | 0:02:59
and Powerstock, can command a five percent premium | 0:02:59 | 0:03:03
because of their chocolate box perfection. | 0:03:03 | 0:03:06
It's this perfection that's evident in the many architectural styles | 0:03:06 | 0:03:10
on offer throughout this beautiful county. | 0:03:10 | 0:03:13
There certainly is something for every type of buyer here in Dorset. | 0:03:13 | 0:03:18
An architectural highlight are the county's distinctive longhouses | 0:03:18 | 0:03:21
which date back to around the 17th century. | 0:03:21 | 0:03:25
They typically feature trademark thick stone walls | 0:03:25 | 0:03:28
and thatched roofs. Highly sought-after, | 0:03:28 | 0:03:31
a four bedroom home can be around the £500,000 mark. | 0:03:31 | 0:03:35
Georgian style architecture is also a recurrent theme. | 0:03:36 | 0:03:39
Houses around the towns of Dorchester and Weymouth | 0:03:39 | 0:03:43
with stunning sea views can easily cost in excess of £600,000. | 0:03:43 | 0:03:46
Dorset's inland countryside is home to some fantastic properties. | 0:03:46 | 0:03:51
In line with the rest of the county, it can be pricey | 0:03:51 | 0:03:55
with a family home typically ranging from £400,000-£600,000. | 0:03:55 | 0:04:00
Some delightful examples of Dorset properties there. | 0:04:02 | 0:04:06
Let's hope we can match the standard and suitably inspire | 0:04:06 | 0:04:09
today's couple who are ready to escape to the country. | 0:04:09 | 0:04:12
Love-struck Neil and Liz first met many years ago, | 0:04:14 | 0:04:17
but it wasn't until recently that Neil summoned up the courage | 0:04:17 | 0:04:20
to reveal his true feelings. | 0:04:20 | 0:04:22
I always liked Liz and didn't know how to ask her out. | 0:04:22 | 0:04:25
So, I went and found an envelope around town | 0:04:25 | 0:04:28
and I think I may have wrote on the back of a bank slip... | 0:04:28 | 0:04:32
Paying-in slip. | 0:04:32 | 0:04:35
"If you would like to go out some time, give me a ring." | 0:04:35 | 0:04:38
I read it and thought, "That's interesting." | 0:04:38 | 0:04:40
Let it sit for a couple of days and then gave Neil a ring | 0:04:40 | 0:04:44
and said, "Yeah, I'd like to meet up for a drink." | 0:04:44 | 0:04:47
Together for four years, at the moment they're living in Liz's house | 0:04:47 | 0:04:52
in the town of Horsham, West Sussex. | 0:04:52 | 0:04:54
But now they want a fresh start in the coastal county | 0:04:54 | 0:04:57
where their romance blossomed. | 0:04:57 | 0:04:59
We've got very nice, sentimental memories of the times | 0:04:59 | 0:05:04
we've been in Dorset and we're in a position where we can move now. | 0:05:04 | 0:05:09
We've got no ties as such. | 0:05:09 | 0:05:11
We really want to get a place that's both of ours, that we've chosen together. | 0:05:11 | 0:05:14
We just want to start off in a totally different countryside area | 0:05:14 | 0:05:18
and have a bit of space and get away from suburbia | 0:05:18 | 0:05:22
and all the houses, and start again. | 0:05:22 | 0:05:25
Wanting to escape the rat race is one thing, | 0:05:26 | 0:05:29
but the two of them aren't planning on reaching for their pension books just yet. | 0:05:29 | 0:05:33
I'm a self-employed painter and decorator. | 0:05:33 | 0:05:36
I've been doing it now for 26 years. | 0:05:36 | 0:05:40
Hopefully, if I can get work in Dorset | 0:05:40 | 0:05:42
and I'm working there the same as I'm doing here, | 0:05:42 | 0:05:45
it'll be even better waking up in Dorset and going out | 0:05:45 | 0:05:48
the countryside and coastal places and doing the same as I've done here. | 0:05:48 | 0:05:53
When Neil's not working, he's hoping to spend his time sailing. | 0:05:53 | 0:05:56
Do you like that? | 0:05:56 | 0:05:59
While Liz wants to get creative. | 0:05:59 | 0:06:01
I really love to paint. I've painted for many years. | 0:06:01 | 0:06:05
I would love a room which is just mine, | 0:06:05 | 0:06:07
get back into doing my pet portraits | 0:06:07 | 0:06:09
which I've done up until a couple of years ago. | 0:06:09 | 0:06:12
Already sold up, they're all set for their new adventure in the Dorset countryside | 0:06:12 | 0:06:16
and have healthy finances to find the perfect home. | 0:06:16 | 0:06:20
Our budget is up to 600,000. | 0:06:20 | 0:06:22
Neil and Liz would like us the concentrate our house search | 0:06:27 | 0:06:30
in the south-west of Dorset near the coast | 0:06:30 | 0:06:33
and within a reasonable driving distance of Dorchester. | 0:06:33 | 0:06:37
'On Dorset soil, I'm meeting our buyers to learn more | 0:06:37 | 0:06:40
'about their property expectations.' | 0:06:40 | 0:06:42
Welcome to a rather chilly but beautiful Dorset. | 0:06:42 | 0:06:46
Is this the views you had in mind when you decided to move to here? | 0:06:46 | 0:06:50
This is about the area we'd like to come to | 0:06:50 | 0:06:52
and this is the sort of thing we want to see every day. | 0:06:52 | 0:06:56
Give me an idea of the type of home you're after. | 0:06:56 | 0:06:59
We'd like a home that is preferably on the edge of the village. | 0:06:59 | 0:07:04
Not too remote, we don't want to be stuck out in the middle of nowhere. | 0:07:04 | 0:07:09
-A studio or something... -I want to get back to doing my art again. | 0:07:09 | 0:07:13
So that's important for your hobbies. | 0:07:13 | 0:07:15
We have to find somewhere wonderful and pleasing to do your art. | 0:07:15 | 0:07:19
-But is true somebody, not too far from us, is scared of ghosts? -Yes. | 0:07:19 | 0:07:24
I was just going to say, not too remote | 0:07:24 | 0:07:26
because I wouldn't like be there on my own. | 0:07:26 | 0:07:28
So you don't like old buildings if there is a ghost involved. | 0:07:28 | 0:07:31
-If it's got a history, I wouldn't like it. -He wouldn't go there. | 0:07:31 | 0:07:34
What is it about Dorset that you both love? | 0:07:34 | 0:07:37
Why have you picked this part of the world? | 0:07:37 | 0:07:39
We've visited here many times. | 0:07:39 | 0:07:42
Specifically in this area. | 0:07:42 | 0:07:44
I have to say the first time we came down here, | 0:07:44 | 0:07:47
I just sat there and went, I'd love to come and live here. | 0:07:47 | 0:07:50
Remind what your budget is. | 0:07:50 | 0:07:53
500 to 600. | 0:07:53 | 0:07:55
-£600,000, top budget? -Yes, 600 is top. | 0:07:55 | 0:07:58
Or does that include buying a boat for you, Neil? | 0:07:58 | 0:08:01
No, I've been promised a boat by someone not a million miles away from me. | 0:08:01 | 0:08:05
How lovely. | 0:08:05 | 0:08:07
So, we've got three houses lined up for you to see, | 0:08:07 | 0:08:10
-one being the mystery property. Shall we get going? -Yes. Let's go. | 0:08:10 | 0:08:14
Neil and Liz have a maximum budget of £600,000 | 0:08:18 | 0:08:20
for their new Dorset property. | 0:08:20 | 0:08:23
For that they would like a spacious kitchen. | 0:08:23 | 0:08:26
A minimum of four bedrooms. | 0:08:26 | 0:08:28
A room for Liz to paint in. | 0:08:28 | 0:08:30
Space for Neil's boat and definitely no ghosts. | 0:08:30 | 0:08:33
We found three stunning properties for them to view. | 0:08:34 | 0:08:37
In each case I'll be asking them to guess the price before I reveal it. | 0:08:37 | 0:08:42
Our final choice is a mystery house, | 0:08:42 | 0:08:44
one they may not have considered on paper | 0:08:44 | 0:08:47
but which I hope will go swimmingly. | 0:08:47 | 0:08:49
We are starting our journey near Abbotsbury, 12 miles from Dorchester | 0:08:56 | 0:09:00
and not far from our buyers' favourite coastal town of Bridport. | 0:09:00 | 0:09:04
Abbotsbury is steeped in history and still retains its historic charm. | 0:09:04 | 0:09:09
The careful restoration of many of the cottages | 0:09:09 | 0:09:12
led to a conservation award in 1975. | 0:09:12 | 0:09:14
The village itself is set amongst the hills behind Chesil Beach | 0:09:14 | 0:09:18
and there are plenty of interesting shops, | 0:09:18 | 0:09:21
pubs and even a village store selling local produce. | 0:09:21 | 0:09:25
Our first property is a rather deceptive home | 0:09:26 | 0:09:28
in the style of a characterful local farmhouse, | 0:09:28 | 0:09:31
but was actually built a few years ago. | 0:09:31 | 0:09:34
So, your first potential property in Dorset. What do you think? | 0:09:34 | 0:09:40
-I like it. -That's a fair size. It does, it looks very nice. | 0:09:40 | 0:09:43
It's a great entrance, I think. The house is a new build. | 0:09:43 | 0:09:47
It is only eight years old | 0:09:47 | 0:09:49
-although I think it looks a bit older than not. -Yes, it does. | 0:09:49 | 0:09:52
You've got a large driveway which I know you're after. | 0:09:52 | 0:09:54
-And a car port for my boat. -That is a fantastic start. | 0:09:54 | 0:09:58
-Shall we head inside the house? -Yes, please. -Come on then. | 0:09:58 | 0:10:01
'Great first reactions from Neil and Liz | 0:10:03 | 0:10:06
'and they've really taken to the exterior. | 0:10:06 | 0:10:08
'Hopefully we can keep up the momentum on the inside.' | 0:10:08 | 0:10:12
Let's start off with the sitting room. | 0:10:13 | 0:10:15
Yeah. It's fine, isn't it? | 0:10:15 | 0:10:18
-Size wise. -Nice big space. -Yes. | 0:10:18 | 0:10:20
-Yes. -Yeah, nice fireplace. | 0:10:20 | 0:10:22
What kind of fire..? | 0:10:22 | 0:10:24
It's a gas fire at the moment with a remote control for convenience. | 0:10:24 | 0:10:28
Even better news is there is a flue and a chimney stack. | 0:10:28 | 0:10:32
So if you wanted a multi fuel burner there, no problem at all. | 0:10:32 | 0:10:36
That would be nice. You can do your logs and stuff. | 0:10:36 | 0:10:39
-A great start. We like this room? -Yes. -Yes. | 0:10:39 | 0:10:42
Happy? OK. Let's continue. | 0:10:42 | 0:10:44
Another very, very generous sized room. | 0:10:49 | 0:10:53
-It is a good size, isn't it? -Yes, lovely. | 0:10:53 | 0:10:56
Big enough our table and all the chairs. | 0:10:56 | 0:10:59
When you've got all the family coming to stay. | 0:10:59 | 0:11:01
-We've never had them all around the table. -No, we haven't. | 0:11:01 | 0:11:04
It could be like a chimpanzee tea party. | 0:11:04 | 0:11:08
The kitchen is just next door. | 0:11:08 | 0:11:10
Not quite open plan but I think it works pretty well. | 0:11:10 | 0:11:13
-That's nice. -It's nice and bright. | 0:11:13 | 0:11:16
You like cream coloured units, don't you? | 0:11:16 | 0:11:19
Yes, I was going to do mine in this. I just like the whole aspect. | 0:11:19 | 0:11:23
Do you? The setup. You have all this space | 0:11:23 | 0:11:26
and this could be a reading room, it could be another dining room, | 0:11:26 | 0:11:29
it could perhaps be a painting room because of the light. | 0:11:29 | 0:11:33
It could, I suppose. You've got a lot of natural light in there. | 0:11:33 | 0:11:38
Tell me, how many bedrooms was it you are after? | 0:11:38 | 0:11:40
-Seven. -You liar. It was four. Come on, upstairs. | 0:11:42 | 0:11:46
'Well, that is a pretty positive mood to this house so far. | 0:11:47 | 0:11:51
'On this floor you'll also find a large utility room and cloakroom. | 0:11:51 | 0:11:56
'Time to see where they could be sleeping.' | 0:11:56 | 0:11:58
So, your master bedroom. | 0:11:58 | 0:12:02
-Oh yeah, that's a size as well. -That's nice. | 0:12:02 | 0:12:05
So, a huge master. | 0:12:05 | 0:12:08
You've also got two other double bedrooms down the corridor | 0:12:08 | 0:12:13
and a very large single with the family bathroom. | 0:12:13 | 0:12:16
Oh, right. OK. | 0:12:16 | 0:12:18
-You've got your own en-suite... -Lovely. -..which is really well decorated. | 0:12:18 | 0:12:22
Beautifully tiled. If it's in your taste, you won't have to change anything. | 0:12:22 | 0:12:27
Got oodles of space in this house | 0:12:27 | 0:12:28
because it's just the two of you most of the time. | 0:12:28 | 0:12:31
We're going to go outside | 0:12:31 | 0:12:33
and I'll tell you a little bit more about the surrounding area | 0:12:33 | 0:12:36
and also you can start mulling over the price, how much this is worth. | 0:12:36 | 0:12:41
Neil, you lead the way back down the stairs. | 0:12:41 | 0:12:45
'So, a muted response to this room and I'm not sure | 0:12:45 | 0:12:48
'I've convinced Neil and Liz that this is the one. | 0:12:48 | 0:12:51
'Maybe outside will sway them.' | 0:12:51 | 0:12:53
Regarding the garden, | 0:12:53 | 0:12:55
you've got a large, vast garden to the front, | 0:12:55 | 0:12:58
a smaller garden at the back but it is west facing | 0:12:58 | 0:13:00
so you're going to get the sun all in the afternoon. | 0:13:00 | 0:13:04
-Is this about as much land as you wanted? -Yes. Just. | 0:13:04 | 0:13:09
As far as the beach is concerned, we are about five miles away from the sea. | 0:13:09 | 0:13:13
-Yes. -So, that's it. | 0:13:13 | 0:13:15
We've now got to talk money. | 0:13:15 | 0:13:19
Neil, you've been mulling this over. | 0:13:19 | 0:13:21
-I have because it is worth a meal this. -It's worth a meal, is it? | 0:13:21 | 0:13:25
It's worth a meal. The loser is buying dinner. | 0:13:25 | 0:13:28
-Is he very competitive? -Yes. -Oh, OK. | 0:13:28 | 0:13:32
-All right then. Well, who wants to go first? -I'll go first. | 0:13:32 | 0:13:35
-I think, optimistically, 580,000. -OK. | 0:13:35 | 0:13:40
OK. 545. | 0:13:40 | 0:13:43
OK. You're both out. | 0:13:44 | 0:13:47
You're quite a bit out. It is £635,000. | 0:13:47 | 0:13:53
I have spoken to the owners and they are very happy | 0:13:53 | 0:13:56
to have a conversation with you. | 0:13:56 | 0:13:59
So they do know what your top budget is of £600,000. | 0:13:59 | 0:14:02
They are also in a position to move very, very quickly. | 0:14:02 | 0:14:07
Are you surprised at the price | 0:14:07 | 0:14:09
because you guessed quite a bit under? | 0:14:09 | 0:14:11
I think I thought it was a bit under because of the amount of ground | 0:14:11 | 0:14:14
that's with the property but then you've got to look at the location. | 0:14:14 | 0:14:17
Now you've got that price, | 0:14:17 | 0:14:19
thankfully it hasn't shocked you too much, | 0:14:19 | 0:14:22
why don't you take another look around, explore, have a think | 0:14:22 | 0:14:25
and I'll catch up with you when you're ready. | 0:14:25 | 0:14:28
On the market for £635,000 this house is over budget. | 0:14:31 | 0:14:36
With properties in this area typically selling | 0:14:36 | 0:14:39
for five percent under the asking price, they could potentially afford it | 0:14:39 | 0:14:43
and it does meet a lot of their demands. | 0:14:43 | 0:14:46
It has a large kitchen and garden room. | 0:14:46 | 0:14:48
A spacious sitting room with a brick fireplace. | 0:14:48 | 0:14:51
A good-sized dining room. | 0:14:51 | 0:14:54
Four bedrooms, and plenty of parking for cars and Neil's boat. | 0:14:54 | 0:14:58
-So, do you think the kitchen's big enough? -Yeah, just. | 0:15:01 | 0:15:04
-Just, I think so. -It's nicely done, though. I love this area. | 0:15:04 | 0:15:07
I can see us sitting in there. | 0:15:07 | 0:15:09
Out first impressions were very positive. | 0:15:09 | 0:15:11
I find I either like or dislike a place straight away. | 0:15:11 | 0:15:15
I can usually tell within a few minutes. | 0:15:15 | 0:15:17
First impressions of the house was good. It was a nice big, airy hall. | 0:15:17 | 0:15:21
Lots of natural wood. The lounge was nice. | 0:15:21 | 0:15:24
The kitchen and the snug, should we say, that was ideal. | 0:15:24 | 0:15:28
It would fulfil all our needs and everything. | 0:15:28 | 0:15:31
-Hi. -All good? -Yes, that's brilliant. | 0:15:33 | 0:15:36
-Seen enough, I think. -A good start? -Great start. | 0:15:36 | 0:15:39
-Excellent. Come on then. -Interesting place. | 0:15:39 | 0:15:42
The historic coastal town of Lyme Regis | 0:15:55 | 0:15:57
has a strong seafaring heritage. | 0:15:57 | 0:16:00
For seven centuries, trade flourished and its port supported | 0:16:00 | 0:16:03
a burgeoning fishing and boat-building industry. | 0:16:03 | 0:16:06
But during the 19th century, the need for boats declined | 0:16:06 | 0:16:10
with many local builders going out of business. | 0:16:10 | 0:16:13
In one corner of Lyme Regis, however, | 0:16:13 | 0:16:15
the boat-building tradition is being kept alive. | 0:16:15 | 0:16:18
As Neil would like a fishing boat when he makes the move to Dorset, | 0:16:20 | 0:16:23
we've arranged for our buyers to meet expert Justin Adkin | 0:16:23 | 0:16:26
who's going to reveal all about this historic trade. | 0:16:26 | 0:16:31
-So, Justin, could you tell us something about this boat? -Sure. | 0:16:31 | 0:16:33
This is a traditionally built clinker construction. | 0:16:33 | 0:16:38
I've got to ask you this, but how much would a boat like this cost? | 0:16:38 | 0:16:41
If you were to go to a boat yard and commission one to be built, | 0:16:41 | 0:16:44
depending on its finish and standard and fit out, | 0:16:44 | 0:16:47
anywhere between £12-£15,000. | 0:16:47 | 0:16:49
The guys who come here to make a boat, | 0:16:49 | 0:16:52
do they come in as novices and leave being able to build a boat? | 0:16:52 | 0:16:57
That's right. The object of the course isn't just to be able to build a boat, | 0:16:57 | 0:17:01
it's to give you the foundations to become a boat builder. | 0:17:01 | 0:17:05
The academy's a non-profit making organisation, | 0:17:05 | 0:17:08
teaching students modern and traditional wooden boat building methods. | 0:17:08 | 0:17:12
The training courses are completely hands-on | 0:17:12 | 0:17:15
and vary in length from one day to 38 weeks. | 0:17:15 | 0:17:20
-This is the boat that needs the work doing to it. -Right. | 0:17:20 | 0:17:23
-We need a volunteer to get on the floor for this one. -Feel free. | 0:17:23 | 0:17:27
-Yeah, I'll do that. Lead me to it then. -Go for it. | 0:17:27 | 0:17:30
Time for Neil to test his boat-building credentials. | 0:17:30 | 0:17:33
Nice and flat on the plank. You ready? | 0:17:33 | 0:17:37
Yeah, go on. | 0:17:38 | 0:17:40
-OK? -Yeah. | 0:17:46 | 0:17:48
Not bad for a beginner. | 0:17:51 | 0:17:53
And with the Lyme Regis seafaring history firmly moored | 0:17:53 | 0:17:55
in our buyers' hearts, it's time to set sail once more | 0:17:55 | 0:17:59
as we continue our property voyage. | 0:17:59 | 0:18:02
Our journey continues towards Beaminster | 0:18:06 | 0:18:09
which is 20 miles north of Lyme Regis. | 0:18:09 | 0:18:11
Before we check out our second property, | 0:18:11 | 0:18:13
I want to show Neil and Liz its locality. | 0:18:13 | 0:18:16
So this is the market town of Beaminster. | 0:18:16 | 0:18:19
Have you been here before? Do you know this area? | 0:18:19 | 0:18:21
We've been here briefly about three or four years ago. | 0:18:21 | 0:18:24
The reason I brought you is because the property we're going to show you | 0:18:24 | 0:18:28
isn't too far from here. | 0:18:28 | 0:18:30
As you've been around here, you know it's got shops, bakers, | 0:18:30 | 0:18:33
supermarket, everything you could want. | 0:18:33 | 0:18:36
It might be a good catchment area for your business as well, Neil. | 0:18:36 | 0:18:40
Yeah, I think it would be. It's quite an affluent area. | 0:18:40 | 0:18:43
It is an affluent area. | 0:18:43 | 0:18:44
We think you're going to fit in very well indeed. | 0:18:44 | 0:18:47
-So shall we go and see your next property? -Yes. Lead on. | 0:18:47 | 0:18:50
Our second house is stunning, but it's also a bit of a risk | 0:18:55 | 0:18:58
as Neil and Liz have stated an aversion to period properties. | 0:18:58 | 0:19:03
And this one is a classic stone farmhouse. | 0:19:03 | 0:19:06
Here is your second property we want to show you. | 0:19:09 | 0:19:14
Oh, yeah. It's a bit older than the other one. | 0:19:14 | 0:19:17
It's a little bit older by about 300 years. | 0:19:17 | 0:19:21
It is Grade II listed. | 0:19:21 | 0:19:24
But as far as we're aware, there's no extra people living in it! | 0:19:24 | 0:19:29
If you know what I mean. Hopefully. | 0:19:29 | 0:19:31
-Is that a reference to me, that one? -Yes. No ghosts. -I get that one. | 0:19:31 | 0:19:35
-Intrigued? -Yeah. I'd be interested to look at what's inside there. | 0:19:35 | 0:19:39
-Good, we've got you thinking. -Yeah, definitely. -OK, come on. | 0:19:39 | 0:19:42
'Reassured there are no ghosts treading the boards here, | 0:19:45 | 0:19:48
'our buyers seem keen to take a closer look at this property, | 0:19:48 | 0:19:52
'which I'm sure won't disappoint.' | 0:19:52 | 0:19:54
-So I've got to bring you straight in here. -Wow, what a place. | 0:19:56 | 0:20:01
There's conservatories and then there's this room. | 0:20:01 | 0:20:04
Just look at that vista. That's why you want to move to Dorset. | 0:20:04 | 0:20:09
-Yeah, that's correct. -Beautiful, isn't it? | 0:20:09 | 0:20:12
-It is, that is absolutely lovely. -It's all double-glazed, as well. | 0:20:12 | 0:20:16
-Let me show you the rest of the house. -Lead on. | 0:20:16 | 0:20:18
So the views of the Dorset countryside have impressed them. | 0:20:18 | 0:20:22
However, I'm still a bit concerned about their reaction | 0:20:22 | 0:20:25
to the rest of the property. | 0:20:25 | 0:20:26
Through here we've actually got two large sitting rooms, | 0:20:27 | 0:20:31
both with fires. I like to think that one's a bit more snug, | 0:20:31 | 0:20:35
although it's a large snug. | 0:20:35 | 0:20:37
-Yeah. -But you've got this room, as well. -That's a lovely one, isn't it? | 0:20:37 | 0:20:40
-That's a nice big fire. -It's brighter than I thought it would be. | 0:20:40 | 0:20:43
-It's nice. -Yeah. What do you think, Liz? -I don't know. | 0:20:43 | 0:20:47
I'm struggling with it, because I always said I didn't | 0:20:47 | 0:20:50
particularly like the beams and the old character. | 0:20:50 | 0:20:53
But I do like this room, I think it's lovely. | 0:20:53 | 0:20:56
It'll take on another sort of personality, as well, | 0:20:56 | 0:20:59
-with our modern furniture, as well. -Yeah. -Yeah. | 0:20:59 | 0:21:03
Keen to see the rest of the house? | 0:21:03 | 0:21:04
-Oh, yeah. -Because it is quite a tour. OK, come on. | 0:21:04 | 0:21:08
'Well, what a surprise. | 0:21:08 | 0:21:10
'Liz likes all the period touches of this home, | 0:21:10 | 0:21:13
'which should be good news for our next room.' | 0:21:13 | 0:21:16
So here is your farmhouse kitchen, as we're in a farmhouse. | 0:21:16 | 0:21:19
Oh, it isn't old. | 0:21:19 | 0:21:21
-I have to say, that's an amazing range there, isn't it? -Yes. | 0:21:21 | 0:21:24
I don't think you could get a bigger range if you tried. | 0:21:24 | 0:21:27
-That is so massive. -It's like a double range | 0:21:27 | 0:21:30
and you've got a massive dining room next door, which is separate. | 0:21:30 | 0:21:34
OK, that's worth... | 0:21:34 | 0:21:36
-OK, shall we continue? -Yeah. Like the cupboards. | 0:21:36 | 0:21:39
-All right, head upstairs. -OK. | 0:21:39 | 0:21:41
Also on this floor is a study, large utility and cloakroom. | 0:21:43 | 0:21:47
But now it's time to see where they might sleep. | 0:21:47 | 0:21:51
-So come into one of the four double bedrooms. -Four bedrooms? | 0:21:51 | 0:21:55
-It's got its own en suite. -Yeah. -Yeah, that's not a bad size. | 0:21:55 | 0:22:00
-It's a good size. -Loads of storage behind us. -Wardrobes. -Wardrobes. | 0:22:00 | 0:22:04
Token beams, again. | 0:22:04 | 0:22:06
I'll let you explore the upstairs on your own a bit later on | 0:22:06 | 0:22:09
because I want to take you outside, because there's plenty to | 0:22:09 | 0:22:13
see in this house, there's even more to see outside. | 0:22:13 | 0:22:16
-Cheers. -Thank you. | 0:22:16 | 0:22:18
There are three more double bedrooms up here, one with an en suite. | 0:22:20 | 0:22:24
There's also a good-size family bathroom. | 0:22:24 | 0:22:27
This characterful stone farmhouse has lovely gardens with | 0:22:27 | 0:22:31
fantastic views across the fields and even has its own pond. | 0:22:31 | 0:22:35
But the surprises don't end there. | 0:22:35 | 0:22:38
Now, not only are you moving to the country, | 0:22:41 | 0:22:44
but you want to continue your hobbies. | 0:22:44 | 0:22:46
-I know how important that is to you, Liz. -Yeah. | 0:22:46 | 0:22:49
So I've brought you into a workshop, | 0:22:49 | 0:22:51
but I think this could make a fantastic artist's studio. | 0:22:51 | 0:22:55
-It certainly could. -Or workshop. -No. | 0:22:55 | 0:22:58
-Artist's studio. -Artist's studio. | 0:23:00 | 0:23:03
And there's another section through there. | 0:23:03 | 0:23:06
You caught us out on this one, | 0:23:06 | 0:23:08
-I didn't think this belonged to the property. -Good, good. | 0:23:08 | 0:23:11
-I'd be living out here. -Do you like it? -We do like it. | 0:23:11 | 0:23:14
-I'd be living out of here, I would. -Neil, are you feeling neglected? | 0:23:14 | 0:23:18
I'd like to say yes because then you're going to show us | 0:23:18 | 0:23:21
-something good, aren't you? -Yeah, what about a small barn? Follow me. | 0:23:21 | 0:23:25
I don't think Neil will be too upset that Liz has got the workshop | 0:23:28 | 0:23:32
when he sees what I've got for him. | 0:23:32 | 0:23:34
And, yes, Neil, you've guessed it. | 0:23:36 | 0:23:39
-I was fibbing when I said it was a small barn. -A little bit, yeah. | 0:23:39 | 0:23:43
-Oh, grief. -Big enough for you? | 0:23:43 | 0:23:45
I think I would have to expand the business, | 0:23:45 | 0:23:48
get a few more vans to fill it up, yeah. | 0:23:48 | 0:23:50
Room for the boat, room for your van, | 0:23:50 | 0:23:52
room for all your work equipment. | 0:23:52 | 0:23:55
See, there's so many options with this property. | 0:23:55 | 0:23:57
I've got to think of more things just to fill it out. | 0:23:57 | 0:23:59
-Get the optimum use out of it. -Absolutely. | 0:23:59 | 0:24:02
If I could, I'd put a swimming pool in. | 0:24:02 | 0:24:05
You've also got to start thinking how much it's all worth. | 0:24:05 | 0:24:08
Let's go back out into the garden in that lovely sunshine | 0:24:08 | 0:24:10
-and you can tell me. Give me some numbers. -OK. | 0:24:10 | 0:24:13
So there's smiles all round, but will that change when we talk money? | 0:24:15 | 0:24:21
So you've seen the house, you've seen the outbuildings, | 0:24:21 | 0:24:24
you've even got your own pond. How much is all this worth? | 0:24:24 | 0:24:29
-615. -OK. -Right. | 0:24:31 | 0:24:34
I thought I had an idea when it was just the house, | 0:24:34 | 0:24:36
but when I was shown the barn and then this, I'm going to say... | 0:24:36 | 0:24:41
-..655. -Ooh. | 0:24:42 | 0:24:45
The price is in-between those two figures. | 0:24:45 | 0:24:48
-Closer to which, though? -Liz. -Yes! | 0:24:50 | 0:24:53
-Remind us what you said, Liz. -615. | 0:24:53 | 0:24:56
It's actually £625,000. | 0:24:56 | 0:25:00
-I'm surprised. Pleasantly surprised. -I am, actually. | 0:25:00 | 0:25:03
It is an awful lot of house, but we are in the west of the county, | 0:25:03 | 0:25:07
we're quite close to Somerset. So you do get a lot for your money. | 0:25:07 | 0:25:11
-Go and have another look around. -OK. | 0:25:11 | 0:25:14
It's such an amazing house, you're probably going to be a few hours, | 0:25:14 | 0:25:17
I would say, but take your time, have a look everywhere. | 0:25:17 | 0:25:20
Go back, have a look at the barn, look at your work studio, the things | 0:25:20 | 0:25:23
that are going to make you happy, as well as the house itself. | 0:25:23 | 0:25:26
Off you go and don't fall into that pond. | 0:25:26 | 0:25:29
-See you later. -See you later. -Bye. | 0:25:29 | 0:25:31
Well, another amazing house here in Dorset. | 0:25:31 | 0:25:36
Completely different from the first one we saw. | 0:25:36 | 0:25:39
It's got so much character, it's got so much age, it's got | 0:25:39 | 0:25:42
so much going for it and they don't seem to be too put off by the price. | 0:25:42 | 0:25:47
This Grade II listed farmhouse has certainly | 0:25:48 | 0:25:51
put the cat amongst the pigeons. | 0:25:51 | 0:25:53
Even though it's £25,000 over their budget at £625,000. | 0:25:53 | 0:25:59
However, the seller is willing to listen to sensible offers | 0:25:59 | 0:26:03
and it does give our buyers everything they asked for. | 0:26:03 | 0:26:07
So I can really have this room, huh? | 0:26:24 | 0:26:26
Yeah, I suppose so. | 0:26:26 | 0:26:28
-It would be better equipped for a workshop but... -No, no. | 0:26:28 | 0:26:33
-It is ideal. -This is more than I ever dreamed of, I can tell you. | 0:26:33 | 0:26:37
It certainly was different, | 0:26:37 | 0:26:38
totally, totally different to the property before. | 0:26:38 | 0:26:41
My only worry is, there's almost too much of it. | 0:26:41 | 0:26:43
Saying that, having got an art studio, | 0:26:43 | 0:26:45
that's a very difficult thing to ignore because it's all I've wanted. | 0:26:45 | 0:26:49
It was a big surprise. | 0:26:49 | 0:26:51
The barn area, I would be constantly thinking of things to put in there, | 0:26:51 | 0:26:56
five-a-side pitch, I don't know, but something like that. | 0:26:56 | 0:27:00
As the day draws to a close over the coastal waters of Dorset, our | 0:27:07 | 0:27:11
buyers get a well-earned chance to reflect on all they've seen today. | 0:27:11 | 0:27:16
Painter and decorator Neil and his partner Liz, | 0:27:20 | 0:27:23
from Horsham, West Sussex, | 0:27:23 | 0:27:25
are seeking a new start, buying their first home together in Dorset. | 0:27:25 | 0:27:30
So far, we've had a very positive reaction to our first property | 0:27:30 | 0:27:33
with its modern style. | 0:27:33 | 0:27:35
And they've been surprisingly receptive to our second offering, | 0:27:35 | 0:27:38
a characterful farmhouse. | 0:27:38 | 0:27:40
But will the mystery property have them riding the crest of a wave? | 0:27:40 | 0:27:44
I always said I'd love to be able to wake up and see that. | 0:27:44 | 0:27:48
And I discover more about the county's food-producing heritage | 0:27:48 | 0:27:52
and tantalise my taste buds. | 0:27:52 | 0:27:54
So how are you both feeling today? | 0:27:58 | 0:28:01
-Nice and relaxed. -Yeah. | 0:28:01 | 0:28:04
I've got to be honest, guys, | 0:28:04 | 0:28:05
after yesterday, I'm still not entirely sure what you're after. | 0:28:05 | 0:28:10
Because you weren't rude about either of these houses, | 0:28:10 | 0:28:12
but equally, I don't know if they won a place in your hearts. | 0:28:12 | 0:28:16
You probably showed us something that we wouldn't normally look at. | 0:28:16 | 0:28:21
No, I wouldn't have normally looked at that second house. | 0:28:21 | 0:28:24
Maybe we're too set in our ways of what we wanted, perhaps, | 0:28:24 | 0:28:27
and all that, and now you've shown us two totally different things | 0:28:27 | 0:28:30
of which we both really like. | 0:28:30 | 0:28:32
The fact that you liked both the houses yesterday and you were | 0:28:32 | 0:28:36
pretty open-minded, I think our mystery house stands a real chance. | 0:28:36 | 0:28:40
-Do you? -Yeah. | 0:28:40 | 0:28:42
For our final property gem, we're taking Neil and Liz | 0:28:44 | 0:28:47
slightly out of their search area as we go across the border into Devon, | 0:28:47 | 0:28:52
to the village of Beer, | 0:28:52 | 0:28:53
which is situated in the south-east of the county near Lyme Bay. | 0:28:53 | 0:28:58
Beer itself is an attractive rural village, where many of | 0:28:58 | 0:29:02
the buildings are faced with flint mined from the local chalk rock. | 0:29:02 | 0:29:06
The name of the village is not derived from the drink, | 0:29:06 | 0:29:09
but from the old Anglo-Saxon word, "bearu", which means grove, | 0:29:09 | 0:29:13
and it refers to the forestation that once surrounded it. | 0:29:13 | 0:29:18
Our mystery house has a rather watery connection | 0:29:18 | 0:29:20
and we're hoping that our buyers' love of the sea will entice Neil | 0:29:20 | 0:29:25
and Liz to consider a property that really stretches their search area. | 0:29:25 | 0:29:29
We are actually in East Devon because we think you can get | 0:29:29 | 0:29:33
a lot for your money here. | 0:29:33 | 0:29:35
Because what it does guarantee you are these amazing sea views. | 0:29:35 | 0:29:39
So is it a trip worth making across the county border? | 0:29:39 | 0:29:43
It looks as though it will be, yeah. | 0:29:43 | 0:29:45
-Can't wait to get in there, actually. -Yeah? -Yeah. | 0:29:45 | 0:29:47
Well, thankfully, even though we're pushing the search boundary, | 0:29:47 | 0:29:51
our buyers have not been put off. | 0:29:51 | 0:29:53
In fact, I think I can see a little twinkle in their eyes. | 0:29:53 | 0:29:57
And with spectacular sea views from nearly all the rooms, | 0:29:57 | 0:30:00
this house on the hill could be full steam ahead. | 0:30:00 | 0:30:04
So I actually brought you in the original front door, | 0:30:04 | 0:30:07
although the owners use the side door. | 0:30:07 | 0:30:09
I just wanted you to see that entrance. | 0:30:09 | 0:30:11
This is the main drawing room. | 0:30:11 | 0:30:13
You've got the view straight out over to Lyme Bay. | 0:30:13 | 0:30:16
I forgot about the view. | 0:30:16 | 0:30:17
And you've actually got all those rolling hills, as well, | 0:30:17 | 0:30:20
-all the countryside. -Yeah, it's great. | 0:30:20 | 0:30:22
And you do have that small reception room as you walked through, | 0:30:22 | 0:30:25
which they use as a reading room next door. | 0:30:25 | 0:30:27
And obviously, the hatch. | 0:30:27 | 0:30:30
The hatch. Which leads us nicely into the kitchen. | 0:30:30 | 0:30:34
So, Liz, you like a big-style kitchen, don't you? Kitchen-diner. | 0:30:39 | 0:30:44
Yeah, that is nice. | 0:30:44 | 0:30:47
Not actually my first choice in colour, but I could... | 0:30:47 | 0:30:51
-It goes well, it goes really well, doesn't it? -I like the colour. | 0:30:51 | 0:30:54
-I know you do. -But you knew I would. -Yeah. | 0:30:54 | 0:30:56
-So you've got your range there. -Yeah, just noticed that. -It's nice. | 0:30:56 | 0:30:59
It's a great space. I want to show you the room just through here. | 0:30:59 | 0:31:04
-Because I think this is a fantastic garden room. -This is lovely. | 0:31:06 | 0:31:11
-Yeah, this is great. -So you've got patio doors with access. | 0:31:11 | 0:31:14
Putting you on the spot, how would you use this room? | 0:31:14 | 0:31:17
I'd want this as my lounge, actually. | 0:31:17 | 0:31:21
This is a room where... we've got a massive suite, | 0:31:21 | 0:31:24
it would fit in here lovely, but I'm just a bit | 0:31:24 | 0:31:26
concerned about where we would then have a dining room area. | 0:31:26 | 0:31:29
Is it too good for you, then, to be dining room? | 0:31:29 | 0:31:32
Would you like to live in here, semi-live in here? | 0:31:32 | 0:31:34
Yeah, I'd like to spend most of my time in here. | 0:31:34 | 0:31:36
Looking quite good, so far. | 0:31:36 | 0:31:37
There's one further room to show you downstairs | 0:31:37 | 0:31:40
and it might be the answer to your dining table query, | 0:31:40 | 0:31:43
although I've got it earmarked for something else. | 0:31:43 | 0:31:46
So far, so good, I think. | 0:31:47 | 0:31:49
Now, we could start off the dining room conversation in here. | 0:31:52 | 0:31:55
-Yes, we could. -Which I was going to. -I thought you might. | 0:31:55 | 0:31:59
However, with views like that, | 0:31:59 | 0:32:03
surely, it lends itself to being an artist's studio. | 0:32:03 | 0:32:06
Neil's face! | 0:32:08 | 0:32:10
Or your study, obviously, because we like to keep it fair. | 0:32:12 | 0:32:16
No, I can see the light and that as a studio. I can. | 0:32:16 | 0:32:19
It would be ideal, wouldn't it? | 0:32:20 | 0:32:22
So, you have another reception room to play with. | 0:32:22 | 0:32:26
Study, art studio, dining room. | 0:32:27 | 0:32:32
-You know, you can fight over it once we're not around. -And we will. | 0:32:32 | 0:32:35
On the first floor, there are three double bedrooms | 0:32:37 | 0:32:40
and one good-sized single. | 0:32:40 | 0:32:41
And there's plenty of stunning views of the sea. | 0:32:41 | 0:32:44
So upstairs, with this property, | 0:32:47 | 0:32:49
you've got three double bedrooms, perhaps we'd call this one | 0:32:49 | 0:32:53
the master, but it doesn't have an en suite. | 0:32:53 | 0:32:55
-No, OK. -But it does have... Look at that view! | 0:32:55 | 0:32:58
I've been looking forward to seeing the views from up here. | 0:32:58 | 0:33:01
-Amazing, aren't they? -Yes. | 0:33:01 | 0:33:02
Always said I'd love to be able to wake up and see that. | 0:33:02 | 0:33:05
Well, that's music to my ears, and I don't think the outside of the | 0:33:08 | 0:33:12
property will disappoint, either, with its large, landscaped garden. | 0:33:12 | 0:33:15
So, we've actually got a splendid garden here. | 0:33:17 | 0:33:21
It's very mature, lots of shrubs and trees, very well-maintained. | 0:33:21 | 0:33:26
There's a garage, plenty of parking for all the cars, I know another | 0:33:26 | 0:33:29
thing that you would ideally like is a large driveway, | 0:33:29 | 0:33:32
so you've got that. How does it rate from one to ten? | 0:33:32 | 0:33:34
-I'd say about nine. -Oh. | 0:33:36 | 0:33:39
Oh, yeah, it's lovely being high up, you're not being overlooked. | 0:33:39 | 0:33:42
So? | 0:33:42 | 0:33:44 | |
This house in this location, guess the price. | 0:33:44 | 0:33:48
I know there's a lot riding on this, there's a meal at stake, | 0:33:48 | 0:33:51
so who goes first for the final time? | 0:33:51 | 0:33:53
I think the fact we're in Devon now, | 0:33:53 | 0:33:57
it could be slightly less than it would be in Dorset, but we've got to | 0:33:57 | 0:34:00
take into consideration the garden, the area and, of course, the views. | 0:34:00 | 0:34:06
I'm going to say right on budget at 600. | 0:34:06 | 0:34:09
-Oh, I was going to say that. -You can say the same. | 0:34:09 | 0:34:12
Yeah, but then the competition's gone, isn't it? | 0:34:12 | 0:34:15
OK, I will go slightly higher and say 610. | 0:34:15 | 0:34:19
OK, interesting. This house, | 0:34:19 | 0:34:23
it is under budget. Look at his face. | 0:34:23 | 0:34:26
-Asking price £595,000. -Oh, right. | 0:34:26 | 0:34:31
Got £5,000 to play with. | 0:34:31 | 0:34:33
-So under budget this time. -That's a pleasant surprise. | 0:34:33 | 0:34:36
-It is a surprise, yeah. -Two counts for me. -Yeah. | 0:34:36 | 0:34:40
I think this house certainly deserves a second viewing. | 0:34:40 | 0:34:44
-Do you fancy wandering round on your own? -Yeah. -Yeah. -I'd do that. | 0:34:44 | 0:34:47
I think we need to have another look. | 0:34:47 | 0:34:49
Take your time, there's plenty to see. | 0:34:49 | 0:34:51
-I'll catch up with you when you're ready. -OK. -Thank you. | 0:34:51 | 0:34:53
Well, this house-hunt in Dorset has certainly been interesting. | 0:34:55 | 0:34:58
All the houses have had their own merits. | 0:34:58 | 0:35:00
But this mystery property, with this location, | 0:35:00 | 0:35:03
I think it speaks for itself. | 0:35:03 | 0:35:05
This impressive house, with its expansive views | 0:35:06 | 0:35:09
is on the market for £595,000, just below their maximum budget. | 0:35:09 | 0:35:15
And it really is a great option for our buyers. | 0:35:15 | 0:35:18
-This would obviously be our bedroom, as well, main bedroom. -Yeah. | 0:35:29 | 0:35:34
Imagine waking up to that every morning. Amazing view, isn't it? | 0:35:34 | 0:35:38
It's certainly a mystery house, not only in location, | 0:35:38 | 0:35:40
but the type of house it is. | 0:35:40 | 0:35:43
It's the sort of house I never thought I'd own. | 0:35:43 | 0:35:45
The view is a real bonus, I have to say, | 0:35:45 | 0:35:48
because it is something I've always wanted to have. | 0:35:48 | 0:35:51
We thought we knew what we wanted but you've thrown | 0:35:51 | 0:35:54
a spanner in the works with every house that you've shown us. | 0:35:54 | 0:35:57
And, as I say, we've liked, genuinely liked, all three. | 0:35:57 | 0:36:01
I don't think I want to leave this spot, it's beautiful, isn't it? | 0:36:06 | 0:36:08
-Have you seen enough? -Think so. -Yeah. | 0:36:08 | 0:36:11
That's it for Dorset and Devon, we've shown you our three houses, | 0:36:11 | 0:36:15
so shall we go somewhere quiet where you can gather your thoughts, | 0:36:15 | 0:36:18
keep discussing that dining table? | 0:36:18 | 0:36:20
It's going to be the bane of my life, isn't it? Come on. | 0:36:20 | 0:36:23
With miles of stunning coastline and glorious countryside, | 0:36:32 | 0:36:36
it's no surprise that tourism is Dorset's biggest industry. | 0:36:36 | 0:36:40
However, a large proportion of the county's land is actually | 0:36:40 | 0:36:44
used for agriculture and supports a wide range of food producers, | 0:36:44 | 0:36:48
including the UK's biggest organic milk-producing sheep farm. | 0:36:48 | 0:36:52
Earlier in the week, I went to meet the owner, Crispin Tweddell, | 0:36:52 | 0:36:56
to discover more. | 0:36:56 | 0:36:57
I always thought that ewes only produced lambs, | 0:36:57 | 0:37:01
February, March, April, May time. | 0:37:01 | 0:37:03
How do you manage to get milk all year round? Fresh milk? | 0:37:03 | 0:37:07
We run our sheep in different flocks, so they go to the ram at different | 0:37:07 | 0:37:12
-times of year, so they have lambs at different times of year. -Really? | 0:37:12 | 0:37:16
-So not just in the spring? -Not just in the spring. | 0:37:16 | 0:37:18
We keep rotating cos we keep producing milk. | 0:37:18 | 0:37:21
So how much milk does the average ewe produce? | 0:37:21 | 0:37:24
They produce about two litres, | 0:37:24 | 0:37:27
which compares with a cow that does about ten times that. | 0:37:27 | 0:37:31
So behind us, we've got some of your sheep there, what variety are they? | 0:37:31 | 0:37:35
I've noticed they've got a very long tails. | 0:37:35 | 0:37:37
They're what are known as Friesland, | 0:37:37 | 0:37:40
which is rather like a cow, Friesian. | 0:37:40 | 0:37:43
Friesland are the most prolific sheep for milk. | 0:37:43 | 0:37:48
Each year, milk from the farm is used to | 0:37:48 | 0:37:50
produce 30,000 litres of sheep's milk yoghurt, | 0:37:50 | 0:37:54
and although they supply supermarkets on an industrial scale, | 0:37:54 | 0:37:57
the technique remains very traditional. | 0:37:57 | 0:38:00
-So this is it? This is where it all happens? -This is our potting room. | 0:38:04 | 0:38:08
-So the ewes have been milked? -Yes. And the milk comes in here. -Yeah. | 0:38:08 | 0:38:13
Where we heat it up and add the culture, then it comes | 0:38:13 | 0:38:16
into this potting room, where we have a special process | 0:38:16 | 0:38:20
called hot potting. | 0:38:20 | 0:38:22
Because the stuff is still like milk, | 0:38:22 | 0:38:24
as it goes into these pots here, and then it goes behind me into | 0:38:24 | 0:38:28
the incubated rooms, where we make the yoghurt at a special temperature. | 0:38:28 | 0:38:33
The pots are kept in the incubator for four and a half hours. | 0:38:33 | 0:38:37
And it's this part of the process that gives the yoghurt its taste | 0:38:37 | 0:38:40
and consistency. | 0:38:40 | 0:38:41
I think it's time for me to try some, don't you? | 0:38:46 | 0:38:48
-Well, I think you've got to. -I would love to, I'll follow you. | 0:38:48 | 0:38:50
I love yoghurt. I buy yoghurt regularly. | 0:38:55 | 0:38:59
Now, try it. Try that. | 0:38:59 | 0:39:01
Ooh. | 0:39:01 | 0:39:03 | |
It does taste very pure. | 0:39:05 | 0:39:08
So the texture for this type of yoghurt, it's thicker, isn't it? | 0:39:08 | 0:39:12
Not as runny as the conventional yoghurt that I think of. | 0:39:12 | 0:39:16
It's a bit thicker, it lasts a long time. | 0:39:16 | 0:39:20
Think I might take a couple more seconds just to savour it. | 0:39:20 | 0:39:23
It would be rude not to. | 0:39:23 | 0:39:25
Now, that's it, we've shown them all three properties. | 0:39:29 | 0:39:32
And to be honest, I really can't guess what they're thinking. | 0:39:32 | 0:39:36
They seem to like them all. | 0:39:36 | 0:39:38
But has any one house really won them over enough to put an offer in? | 0:39:38 | 0:39:42
Let's find out. | 0:39:42 | 0:39:43
So, still convinced this is the place for the two of you? | 0:39:49 | 0:39:52
Yeah, why would you not want to come here on a day like this? | 0:39:52 | 0:39:57
I totally agree. | 0:39:57 | 0:39:58
The question is, have we found you your dream property? | 0:39:58 | 0:40:01
Because this is important, the first house that you've bought together. | 0:40:01 | 0:40:05
Let's start with the very first property. | 0:40:05 | 0:40:07
It was actually very modern, wasn't it? It was only eight years old, | 0:40:07 | 0:40:10
just outside of Dorchester. | 0:40:10 | 0:40:11
I really liked the house itself, there was very little to do | 0:40:11 | 0:40:14
in the house at all. | 0:40:14 | 0:40:18
It was just the garden, particularly at the back, | 0:40:18 | 0:40:21
that sort of let that house down, I thought. | 0:40:21 | 0:40:24
-The garden just wasn't big enough for me. -Yeah. | 0:40:24 | 0:40:27
And then we took you much closer to the Somerset border, to West Dorset, | 0:40:27 | 0:40:32
-and showed you something completely different. -Certainly was. | 0:40:32 | 0:40:35
Without ghosts, I might add, the 300-year-old farmhouse, | 0:40:35 | 0:40:40
Grade II listed. | 0:40:40 | 0:40:41
Once again, it had everything we sort of wanted. | 0:40:41 | 0:40:45
The garden here was a lot better, I thought. | 0:40:45 | 0:40:48
Liz, what about that room for you? The art studio? | 0:40:48 | 0:40:50
Well, that was just amazing. | 0:40:50 | 0:40:52
To have that on-site to put into a proper art studio | 0:40:52 | 0:40:56
was just fantastic. | 0:40:56 | 0:40:59
Let's go to our mystery house, the third property we showed you. | 0:40:59 | 0:41:01
We took you just over the border to Seaton. | 0:41:01 | 0:41:05
It was across the border, as you say, but the view was phenomenal there. | 0:41:05 | 0:41:10
The garden was great. | 0:41:10 | 0:41:12
It's not in Dorset, which is something we said, | 0:41:12 | 0:41:16
we didn't want to go over to Devon. | 0:41:16 | 0:41:19
-It's not doable, is it? -No. | 0:41:19 | 0:41:22
It's not ideal, purely from Neil's point of work. | 0:41:22 | 0:41:25
So, you liked all three properties. | 0:41:25 | 0:41:29
I'm still not sure if any one of them has won you over enough to | 0:41:29 | 0:41:32
go back for another viewing and perhaps put an offer in. | 0:41:32 | 0:41:36
Well, you've put us on the spot all week, | 0:41:37 | 0:41:39
we'd like to turn the tables, and which one do you think we'd prefer? | 0:41:39 | 0:41:43
I'm going to say, because of the most amazing views, | 0:41:44 | 0:41:48
it's a journey worth making, so I'm going to say the mystery house, | 0:41:48 | 0:41:51
just over the border in Devon. | 0:41:51 | 0:41:54
-You'd be wrong, though. -Am I? Which one? Put me out of my misery. | 0:41:54 | 0:41:58
-The second one. -The old farmhouse? | 0:41:58 | 0:42:01
-And you didn't want an old property, did you? -Not as old as that, anyway. | 0:42:01 | 0:42:05
So come on, then, why? | 0:42:05 | 0:42:07
Why is that the house you want to go and have another look at again? | 0:42:07 | 0:42:10
I'm delighted, by the way, absolutely thrilled. | 0:42:10 | 0:42:12
There's just so much character there, isn't there? | 0:42:12 | 0:42:14
-There's so much potential to what you can do there. -Inside and out. | 0:42:14 | 0:42:17
-My studio would definitely be there. -Is that what clinched it? | 0:42:17 | 0:42:21
-For me, yeah. -Was it really? | 0:42:21 | 0:42:23
Listen, thank you both very much, it's been a fantastic few days. | 0:42:23 | 0:42:27
It has been great, yeah. We've really enjoyed it. | 0:42:27 | 0:42:29
It is an exciting time for you. If that is the house for you, | 0:42:29 | 0:42:31
-I hope you're very happy. -Thank you. -Thank you. | 0:42:31 | 0:42:34
What a great couple. | 0:42:39 | 0:42:42
Neil and Liz really kept me guessing to the very last moment. | 0:42:42 | 0:42:47
But hey, what a finale. | 0:42:47 | 0:42:49
The fact that they absolutely loved | 0:42:49 | 0:42:51
that 300-year-old Grade II listed farmhouse, | 0:42:51 | 0:42:54
well, it's music to our ears. | 0:42:54 | 0:42:56
We really hope it works out for them, | 0:42:56 | 0:42:59
their first home together, here in Dorset. | 0:42:59 | 0:43:02
Until next time, bye-bye. | 0:43:02 | 0:43:04
Neil and Liz did return to see house number two, | 0:43:07 | 0:43:10
but after careful consideration, they decided it was too big | 0:43:10 | 0:43:14
for their needs and so their search continues. | 0:43:14 | 0:43:16
