Nearly 200 years ago, this towering achievement was built by a gentleman

0:00:020:00:05

who lay claim to being the richest man in Europe.

0:00:050:00:08

Find out what it was used for and where I am in just a moment.

0:00:080:00:12

Today's search takes our house hunters on a journey

0:00:300:00:32

that reveals more than just properties.

0:00:320:00:35

Goodness! You're welling up!

0:00:350:00:36

-It means that much, doesn't it?

-Yeah, it does. It's beautiful.

0:00:360:00:39

And I have some surprises with my quirky cottages.

0:00:390:00:42

-This house keeps on giving.

-It does, doesn't it?

0:00:420:00:44

You don't realise this is here.

0:00:440:00:46

Today, I'm in Somerset

0:00:480:00:49

and this is Beckford's Tower in the northeast of the county.

0:00:490:00:53

Named after its wealthy owner, William Beckford,

0:00:530:00:55

it was built in 1826

0:00:550:00:57

as a place to house his rare art collection and library.

0:00:570:01:02

Later on in life, he became embroiled in a number of scandals

0:01:020:01:06

and it was here he regularly retreated to.

0:01:060:01:09

Today, it's used as a museum,

0:01:090:01:11

but here in the garden lies Beckford's marble tomb.

0:01:110:01:14

As imposing as the character he was rumoured to be.

0:01:140:01:17

Indeed, looking around this fine county,

0:01:170:01:20

it's just one of a mini list of great historic landmarks.

0:01:200:01:24

Set in the south-west of England,

0:01:280:01:29

the county of Somerset is bordered by Wiltshire to the east,

0:01:290:01:33

Dorset to the south-east and Devon to the south-west.

0:01:330:01:36

The rolling landscape of this rural region

0:01:370:01:40

is accentuated by the ranges of hills, including the Mendips,

0:01:400:01:43

which run east to west for almost 80 miles.

0:01:430:01:47

From Weston-super-Mare on the coast to Frome inland.

0:01:470:01:50

Over the last few centuries, stone quarried from these hills

0:01:500:01:54

has built many Somerset towns

0:01:540:01:56

and the great, imposing cities of Bristol and Bath.

0:01:560:01:59

Bath's impressive Georgian architecture of crescents

0:02:010:02:04

and squares, along with its unique Roman baths,

0:02:040:02:07

which are amongst the most important Roman remains north of the Alps,

0:02:070:02:11

has earned it the status of being a World Heritage site.

0:02:110:02:15

Heading south in the county, there are charming towns, like Axbridge,

0:02:150:02:19

full of historic buildings.

0:02:190:02:20

King John's Hunting Lodge is an early Tudor manor house

0:02:200:02:24

that has now been transformed into a museum.

0:02:240:02:27

But outside the citizen towns, this county is full of rural communities

0:02:270:02:32

living in the most idyllic of pastoral landscapes.

0:02:320:02:35

It is easy to see why it is an area worth escaping to.

0:02:350:02:39

The average price of a detached property here in Somerset

0:02:420:02:45

is just over £265,000.

0:02:450:02:49

Around £7,000 more than the national average.

0:02:490:02:53

However, that amount increases dramatically

0:02:530:02:56

if you head north-eastwards towards Bath,

0:02:560:02:59

where the figure jumps to almost £355,000.

0:02:590:03:04

If that 30% premium seems just that little bit too steep,

0:03:040:03:08

it would be worth looking slightly further afield,

0:03:080:03:11

around Frome and the surrounding areas.

0:03:110:03:14

With that in mind, let's meet today's buyers

0:03:140:03:17

and find out where they want to escape to.

0:03:170:03:21

Our house-hunters currently live on a housing estate in Peterborough.

0:03:210:03:26

Michelle and Sian have been together for five years

0:03:260:03:29

and are engaged to be married.

0:03:290:03:31

Our family consists of us two,

0:03:310:03:34

our daughter, Ellie, who's 12,

0:03:340:03:35

and then our two dogs, Bentley and Ruby.

0:03:350:03:38

So we are very tight in our unit.

0:03:380:03:42

Sian works locally as a teaching assistant,

0:03:420:03:44

but Michelle works in the finance industry

0:03:440:03:47

and commutes each day to central London.

0:03:470:03:49

I leave the house at 6am,

0:03:490:03:51

so the guys are still in bed, it's still dark.

0:03:510:03:55

And then I come home at 8-9pm,

0:03:550:03:58

and again, it is dark and Ellie is in bed.

0:03:580:04:01

Within that time, you have run around and gone to work,

0:04:010:04:06

sorted Ellie out, made the dinner,

0:04:060:04:08

put something aside for me

0:04:080:04:10

so that I can have something to eat, and it is nonstop.

0:04:100:04:14

At weekends, we are sorting ourselves out ready for the next week.

0:04:140:04:18

It is like Groundhog Day.

0:04:180:04:19

For me personally, it is quality of time at home

0:04:190:04:22

and just being able to be here,

0:04:220:04:24

be home by 6pm or 7pm, rather than at 9pm.

0:04:240:04:27

It is a key thing for me.

0:04:270:04:30

And Michelle has already started to make changes.

0:04:300:04:33

Where I work at the moment in London,

0:04:330:04:35

and we've got another office down in Bristol,

0:04:350:04:38

and there is an opportunity that potentially,

0:04:380:04:41

I could go down and work there and do the same job.

0:04:410:04:44

It is ideal.

0:04:440:04:46

Michelle was born in Somerset and moving closer to her family

0:04:460:04:50

is another driving factor in the move.

0:04:500:04:53

About three months ago, we had a family crisis with my stepmum.

0:04:530:05:00

I think it's just made me realise I need to be closer to my family.

0:05:000:05:03

For me, it's like going home, even though it is Michelle's home.

0:05:030:05:06

It's just... I don't know, it's just so right. I can't explain it.

0:05:060:05:11

Getting out of the suburban hubbub

0:05:110:05:13

and embracing country life can't come soon enough.

0:05:130:05:16

The house we live in at the minute, it works for us,

0:05:160:05:19

it's big enough, but it's not what we dream of.

0:05:190:05:22

-We both have the same dreams, don't we?

-Yeah.

0:05:220:05:24

We want a cottagey feel.

0:05:240:05:26

We want to be able to have those smells.

0:05:260:05:30

We love walks with the dogs.

0:05:300:05:32

We would love to be part of a small community in a village.

0:05:320:05:35

We're village people.

0:05:350:05:37

They need to sell their current house for the move,

0:05:370:05:40

but have they figure for their new home in mind.

0:05:400:05:43

The budget for the move would be £300-400,000.

0:05:430:05:46

To get Michelle and Sian the rural setting they want,

0:05:510:05:54

but with a manageable commute to Bristol,

0:05:540:05:56

we're looking at villages no more than an hour from the centre

0:05:560:06:00

that are also a convenient distance from Michelle's family in Frome.

0:06:000:06:03

But I need to find out what else they are looking for.

0:06:030:06:06

Welcome to a very brisk Somerset today.

0:06:060:06:10

-Yes, very much so.

-It looks absolutely beautiful,

0:06:100:06:13

but I think we are going to be fighting the rain most of today.

0:06:130:06:17

-It is not going to put us off, is it?

-No.

-No.

0:06:170:06:19

Tell me, why Somerset?

0:06:190:06:21

Well, you can see exactly why Somerset, really.

0:06:210:06:24

It is just absolutely beautiful.

0:06:240:06:26

The setting, the lifestyle, everything.

0:06:260:06:28

It's just a very calming place to be.

0:06:280:06:31

Tell me about this horrendous commute every day.

0:06:310:06:34

Yeah. Two hours each way.

0:06:340:06:36

-So four hours a day!

-Four hours a day, yep.

0:06:360:06:39

I'm hoping to reduce that down somewhat, if we can.

0:06:390:06:41

My goodness! So constantly juggling life and work

0:06:410:06:45

and also finding time for your daughter, Ellie.

0:06:450:06:47

I don't see her most days. She's in bed by the time I get home.

0:06:470:06:50

So to be able to get home at a more reasonable time

0:06:500:06:52

and see her before she goes to bed would be really great.

0:06:520:06:55

Gosh, that is going to make a huge difference.

0:06:550:06:57

Not only to your lives, but to Ellie's as well.

0:06:570:06:59

-Yeah, majorly.

-Completely.

0:06:590:07:01

Now, you currently live in a modern house.

0:07:010:07:03

What are you looking for with this move?

0:07:030:07:05

We are looking for something a little bit more villagey,

0:07:050:07:08

warm, homely kind of country feel to it.

0:07:080:07:11

-You want some fire or something.

-Yeah, I want a fire. Just a fire.

0:07:110:07:16

Just a fire? Sian, you and I are going to get on.

0:07:160:07:19

-She's going to buy this house, the fire is good.

-Just a fire.

0:07:190:07:23

Tell me more about this house. How many bedrooms?

0:07:230:07:26

A minimum of three so that we can have

0:07:260:07:28

people stay over and things from back up north.

0:07:280:07:32

Not too worried about the size, really.

0:07:320:07:35

Just a minimum of three bedrooms.

0:07:350:07:37

Some garden, possibly, for the dogs.

0:07:370:07:40

What about location? You mentioned about a community.

0:07:400:07:43

-Obviously, your daughter is 12?

-Ellie is 12.

0:07:430:07:45

So it needs to have good schooling nearby

0:07:450:07:48

in, obviously, distance for her to travel

0:07:480:07:51

and also, obviously, distance for me to get to work in Bristol.

0:07:510:07:55

So tell me about your budget.

0:07:550:07:56

OK. Within the region of about £350,000.

0:07:560:08:01

Obviously, that can go up. Depends on the kind of house we see

0:08:010:08:06

and if it's something we fall in love with,

0:08:060:08:08

then obviously, we could look to go a bit further if we need to.

0:08:080:08:11

Give me that top budget if we find you something perfect.

0:08:110:08:13

-Top budget, 400,000.

-400,000.

0:08:130:08:16

-Tell me, do you always agree on everything?

-BOTH: No.

0:08:160:08:19

-That was quite definite, wasn't it?

-Yes.

0:08:190:08:21

-We agree on agreeing that we don't agree.

-Yeah.

0:08:210:08:24

So we have got three splendid properties to show you.

0:08:240:08:27

The landscape's disappeared behind us.

0:08:270:08:30

I think that rain's coming in, so on that note, shall we get started?

0:08:300:08:33

Definitely. Yes, let's go.

0:08:330:08:35

So for a maximum budget of £400,000,

0:08:350:08:38

they're looking for a characterful country home

0:08:380:08:40

with a minimum of three bedrooms, a real fire for Sian

0:08:400:08:45

and in a rural setting no more than an hour from Bristol.

0:08:450:08:48

And we've got three fantastic houses that

0:08:480:08:51

I know will deliver on their country dream, but I won't be letting

0:08:510:08:55

them in on the price until they've had a guess first.

0:08:550:08:58

And then there's the Mystery House,

0:08:580:09:00

which this week is a heavenly proposition.

0:09:000:09:03

Our search today kicks off in the hamlet of Yarley Hill,

0:09:060:09:10

just 15 minutes from the centre of Bristol,

0:09:100:09:12

but in the heart of the Mendips.

0:09:120:09:14

Consisting of just a few houses, the nearest village is Wookey.

0:09:140:09:19

Surrounded by farmland,

0:09:190:09:20

the village is built up around the now Grade I listed

0:09:200:09:23

12th-century church and the River Axe,

0:09:230:09:25

which runs right through its centre.

0:09:250:09:27

Mostly residential, there are around 1,200 inhabitants

0:09:270:09:31

which are served by a couple of classic country pubs.

0:09:310:09:35

A five-minute drive out of the village up a quiet

0:09:350:09:37

and narrow country lane is property number one.

0:09:370:09:40

So I've brought you to a beautiful hamlet for your first property.

0:09:400:09:45

Tell me what you think.

0:09:450:09:46

-Amazing.

-Beautiful.

-Yeah. I do like the stone.

0:09:460:09:49

-It's really... It's what we're looking for, isn't it?

-Yeah.

0:09:490:09:52

It used to be part of a blacksmith's forge, all these buildings.

0:09:520:09:56

And looking at it, you can probably see

0:09:560:09:59

it was three separate properties.

0:09:590:10:02

-Oh, yes, you can.

-It looks large, doesn't it?

-Yeah?

-Mm. It looks big.

0:10:020:10:06

How different is it from the house you have already?

0:10:060:10:09

Couldn't be any more different, really.

0:10:090:10:11

-LAUGHTER

-Completely.

0:10:110:10:13

You're the country girl, Sian,

0:10:130:10:15

-you're the one who's craving to come here.

-Has it got a fire?

0:10:150:10:17

-Has it got a fire? Has it got more than one fire?

-Ooh!

0:10:170:10:21

-That's what you've got to ask me.

-I'm interested.

-Yeah?

-Definitely.

0:10:210:10:25

Come on, let's have a look.

0:10:250:10:26

Dating back to around 1780,

0:10:290:10:31

this stone cottage has bags of character

0:10:310:10:34

and I think the features inside

0:10:340:10:35

will be just what Sian and Michelle are looking for.

0:10:350:10:38

Come on in, ladies, out of that rain.

0:10:380:10:42

So the door opens straight into the sitting room.

0:10:430:10:47

-Sian, what can you see in front of you?

-A fire. It's beautiful.

0:10:470:10:51

-Does it make you happy?

-Yeah, it does. It's amazing.

0:10:510:10:54

-I just feel really emotional.

-Do you? Already?

-Yeah.

0:10:540:10:57

Oh, my goodness, you're welling up! It means that much, doesn't it?

0:10:570:11:00

-Yeah, it does. It's beautiful.

-Well, that's good.

0:11:000:11:02

It shows this is what you're after.

0:11:020:11:05

-This is why people want to move, isn't it?

-Definitely. Really nice.

0:11:050:11:09

Complete opposite of what we've got at home. Complete opposite.

0:11:090:11:12

If you'd like to follow me, I'm going to take us

0:11:120:11:15

through into the dining room and kitchen.

0:11:150:11:17

The original inglenook fireplace was discovered

0:11:170:11:20

by the owners during their renovations over the last 10 years

0:11:200:11:23

and it has clearly struck a chord with Sian.

0:11:230:11:25

This part of the property has been divided up.

0:11:250:11:28

-You've got more of a snug or dining area here.

-Yeah.

0:11:280:11:31

And then you've got your country kitchen there.

0:11:310:11:34

I just worry that it's too small in terms of the storage.

0:11:340:11:37

The size of the kitchen is great. It's just the storage.

0:11:370:11:40

How about opening this up and making it a kitchen/diner?

0:11:400:11:44

-We could do, yeah.

-You wouldn't even need to take down any walls.

0:11:440:11:47

You wouldn't want to take the walls down

0:11:470:11:49

because it's part of the character.

0:11:490:11:51

-I love this, as well, with the fire.

-It's absolutely amazing.

0:11:510:11:53

On the ground floor, is this enough space for the three of you with the dogs?

0:11:530:11:57

-I think so, yeah. This is about the right size, as well.

-Great.

0:11:570:12:00

Would it be a problem if I gave you a little bit more space downstairs?

0:12:000:12:05

-No.

-No, that would be good.

-Yeah? OK. Let's see what's down here.

0:12:050:12:09

The corridor off the kitchen

0:12:110:12:12

and living room leads down to a further, larger living space.

0:12:120:12:15

-Wow!

-An additional little sitting room.

-Wow!

0:12:170:12:21

-Oh, it's amazing!

-It's not that little, actually, is it?

0:12:210:12:24

No, it's not at all. Complete surprise.

0:12:240:12:26

-I didn't expect to see this bit here.

-Yeah, it's incredible.

-Yes?

0:12:260:12:29

-I love it.

-Do you?

-I absolutely love it.

0:12:290:12:32

I can see myself living here.

0:12:320:12:34

Well, let's hope you feel the same about upstairs, with the bedrooms.

0:12:340:12:38

Michelle, if you want to lead the way. Thank you.

0:12:380:12:41

A study and cloakroom round off the downstairs rooms.

0:12:420:12:46

Upstairs, there is one family bathroom

0:12:460:12:48

which serves all four bedrooms.

0:12:480:12:51

Of which there are two doubles

0:12:510:12:53

and a single before getting to the master.

0:12:530:12:58

So right at the end of the hallway upstairs...

0:12:580:13:02

-you have the master bedroom.

-Oh, wow!

-It's big.

-That's very big.

0:13:020:13:05

-It's bigger than the one we've got now. It's amazing.

-Yeah, it is.

0:13:050:13:09

-I like the brickwork.

-The brickwork's great.

0:13:090:13:12

-So, is that the chimney to downstairs?

-Yeah.

-Right, OK.

0:13:120:13:16

And there is a fireplace. Although the one in the bedroom isn't working,

0:13:160:13:19

if you wanted to reactivate it, you easily could.

0:13:190:13:21

-The flue's there, it's just been closed off.

-Right, OK.

-Ooh!

0:13:210:13:25

-Fire in the bedroom.

-Oh, no!

0:13:250:13:27

-How many fires do we want?

-As many as I can!

0:13:270:13:30

-Would you have them in every room?

-Yeah.

0:13:300:13:32

-You're serious, too, aren't you?

-She is.

0:13:320:13:35

We know this cottage is quite quirky.

0:13:350:13:37

It continues with the garden.

0:13:370:13:39

It's not at the back, it's at the front of the property,

0:13:390:13:41

the other side of that lovely lane.

0:13:410:13:43

I'm going to ask you to take a stab at the price, as well.

0:13:430:13:47

With no garden to the rear, the land that comes with the house

0:13:490:13:52

is across the road and is terraced up the bank.

0:13:520:13:55

So the cottage has had a very favourable reception.

0:13:580:14:01

Bringing you across that little babbling brook with the bridge,

0:14:010:14:04

this actually is your garden. Now, how do you feel with the dogs?

0:14:040:14:07

-Because you do have two dogs.

-That's my only reservation.

0:14:070:14:10

-To make it secure and...

-Well, let's see how you feel about the price.

0:14:100:14:15

-Yes.

-Who wants to guess the price first?

0:14:150:14:17

I'll go first. I would say it is about top end, about 390,000.

0:14:170:14:24

Right. Sian?

0:14:240:14:27

I'd go similar to that

0:14:270:14:28

because it's ticked practically every single box, so 395.

0:14:280:14:32

It is over your budget.

0:14:320:14:34

-The asking price is £425,000.

-OK.

0:14:340:14:39

Now, outside of the major cities and towns,

0:14:390:14:43

we know properties aren't flying.

0:14:430:14:44

They know what your budget is

0:14:440:14:46

and they are happy to have a conversation with you.

0:14:460:14:48

Oh, right, OK.

0:14:480:14:49

I think go back inside, have another look on your own,

0:14:490:14:53

-take your time and I'll come and find you.

-Brilliant.

-Thanks.

0:14:530:14:55

-All right, thank you.

-Careful as you go.

0:14:550:14:57

It's all a bit slippy.

0:14:590:15:01

Well, what a brilliant start. This is only our first house.

0:15:010:15:05

It is unusual, the garden, the layout is very quirky.

0:15:050:15:09

But on first reactions, they were very, very impressed.

0:15:090:15:13

Priced at £425,000,

0:15:150:15:18

this house is the classic picture-postcard stone cottage.

0:15:180:15:22

It has four bedrooms, two large living rooms, fireplaces

0:15:220:15:27

and original features throughout and a garden across the lane.

0:15:270:15:31

-It's a nice room.

-Oh, this is a lovely room. This is Ellie's room.

0:15:320:15:35

It's gorgeous. Oh, how pretty!

0:15:350:15:38

When I first saw the house, I thought it was absolutely amazing.

0:15:380:15:42

Countrified, all the fires.

0:15:420:15:45

Just a very, very warm feel about it.

0:15:450:15:47

I think the garden for me, I'm a little bit wavering on the fact

0:15:470:15:51

that it's across the other side of the road and we've got dogs.

0:15:510:15:53

That worries me a little bit. That's my sticking point at the moment.

0:15:530:15:56

When I first walked into the property,

0:15:560:15:58

I had an overwhelming feeling.

0:15:580:16:00

I got quite emotional with the smells, the fires.

0:16:000:16:03

I just thought it was absolutely incredible.

0:16:030:16:06

I can already see myself being here. It's like a dream house for me.

0:16:060:16:10

I asked for an open fire or a log burner.

0:16:100:16:13

I've ended up getting four.

0:16:130:16:15

So I think I've been spoilt for the first house.

0:16:150:16:21

Right, you two, how do you feel we've done with our first property?

0:16:230:16:26

-Really well.

-Yeah?

-Really like it.

0:16:260:16:28

Yeah. It's got enough fires for me, four.

0:16:280:16:31

I knew you'd love it!

0:16:310:16:34

-And that is only our first house, as well.

-I know, yeah.

0:16:340:16:36

-Still got so much more to show you, so we'll keep going.

-Brilliant.

0:16:360:16:39

Somerset is home to many thriving artists

0:16:440:16:47

who are drawn to the county by its pastoral backdrop.

0:16:470:16:51

Sian and Michelle are keen to try something new and creative

0:16:510:16:54

when they move to Somerset.

0:16:540:16:56

So we sent them to meet Paul Jessop,

0:16:560:16:58

a potter who set up his workshop

0:16:580:17:00

seven years ago in an unique location.

0:17:000:17:02

The grounds of a Tudor manor house, Barrington Court.

0:17:020:17:06

What a great setting for a business.

0:17:060:17:08

It's a beautiful location, isn't it? Absolutely beautiful.

0:17:080:17:11

It's the first property the National Trust ever got their hands on.

0:17:110:17:15

-Oh, really?

-Yeah. So that's pretty much where it all started.

0:17:150:17:18

So, what made you set up a business in an area like this?

0:17:180:17:21

I'd got made redundant and it was the one chance I had.

0:17:210:17:25

Once you get made redundant, you take the chance while it's there.

0:17:250:17:28

We used to see the farm buildings sat there empty,

0:17:280:17:31

so we just wrote to the National Trust and said,

0:17:310:17:33

"Would you consider renting a space to a potter?"

0:17:330:17:37

And they came back and said, "Yeah, come and have a look."

0:17:370:17:40

Paul specialises in producing simple,

0:17:400:17:42

elegant and practical pots and jugs.

0:17:420:17:45

He is one of the few people in the country who make pancheons,

0:17:450:17:49

a very old form of pottery, which is a bowl with a glazed inside.

0:17:490:17:53

And it's what Sian and Michelle are going to attempt to make.

0:17:530:17:56

This is six pounds of clay. There you go. There's your starting point.

0:17:580:18:01

Plenty of water on your hands.

0:18:030:18:05

-Oh!

-That's fine, that's fine.

0:18:050:18:07

Now, cup your hands around the side of the pot

0:18:070:18:10

and you need to start kicking at this point to get it to do anything.

0:18:100:18:13

Paul still uses the old-fashioned kick wheel.

0:18:130:18:18

-The traditional way to make pots.

-What is a pancheon?

0:18:180:18:22

They were used predominantly in the old farmhouses back in the 18th century.

0:18:220:18:25

When they milked the cows or goats,

0:18:250:18:28

they would put the milk in there, leave it to settle overnight

0:18:280:18:32

and it would settle down and then they would pour off the excess.

0:18:320:18:35

-Ah, OK.

-So sometimes you see these with a lip on them.

0:18:350:18:37

Hang on a minute, you're going too far out.

0:18:370:18:40

-You're making a roulette wheel now.

-Sorry!

0:18:400:18:43

How are we going to get that back?

0:18:430:18:44

Making the pot rise on the wheel is done by pushing the clay

0:18:440:18:47

between the hands and moving them up the side.

0:18:470:18:50

But it's a skilled job.

0:18:500:18:52

That's excellent. You've done all right with that.

0:18:520:18:55

Let's go and do the next phase, which is slipping,

0:18:550:18:57

putting the slip decoration on the pots.

0:18:570:18:59

-So if you follow me.

-Brilliant.

0:18:590:19:01

The inside of the pots are covered in what's known as slip,

0:19:010:19:05

a fine powdered clay which is watered down and used as decoration.

0:19:050:19:09

Just pour it in.

0:19:090:19:11

Don't be afraid of it. Just pour it in nicely.

0:19:110:19:14

The slip goes on to be glazed

0:19:150:19:17

and essentially creates a layer that makes the pottery waterproof.

0:19:170:19:21

So now, if you can stop the wheel, grab it underneath. That's right.

0:19:210:19:25

Bring it around to here.

0:19:250:19:26

And then just try and turn it as you're pouring that slip out

0:19:260:19:29

so it covers around the ridge. That's it.

0:19:290:19:31

There is a knack to this, isn't there?

0:19:310:19:33

There is a knack to it, but it just comes with time. So just...

0:19:330:19:35

-That's it.

-Got it!

-That's it. And now back on the banding wheel.

0:19:350:19:40

And now spin it around

0:19:420:19:43

and then just use the finger to give that swipey line.

0:19:430:19:46

That's it, there. That's it. That's all it needs.

0:19:460:19:49

And then on the outside, do the same again around there.

0:19:490:19:54

Brilliant. There we go.

0:19:540:19:55

And because each one is handmade,

0:19:550:19:57

the drips and smudges are what make these pots unique.

0:19:570:20:00

But thankfully, Paul's are made with a touch more skill.

0:20:000:20:04

For our second property offering,

0:20:070:20:09

we're driving half an hour east to the village of Leigh-on-Mendip.

0:20:090:20:13

Just 45 minutes from Bristol city centre,

0:20:130:20:16

this small village feels a world away with a local church,

0:20:160:20:19

village hall and a pub as the community hubs.

0:20:190:20:23

Right in the centre of the village, but set back from the road

0:20:230:20:26

with a gravelled driveway is property number two.

0:20:260:20:29

So I've brought you to the village of Leigh-on-Mendip.

0:20:310:20:34

We're surrounded by the Mendip hills, to show you this cottage.

0:20:340:20:38

-It's beautiful.

-Absolutely lovely.

-Yeah, it's lovely.

0:20:380:20:41

The country life, the perfect country life.

0:20:410:20:44

We even have horses behind us.

0:20:440:20:46

-You don't see that in Peterborough, do you?

-No.

-There you go.

0:20:460:20:49

-What do you think of the actual house itself?

-Really quaint.

0:20:490:20:53

It looks really quaint and rustic. I think it's really pretty.

0:20:530:20:57

-First impressions are good.

-Yeah, very positive.

0:20:570:20:59

This double-fronted stone cottage is Grade II listed

0:21:000:21:04

and retains all the character Sian and Michelle are looking for.

0:21:040:21:07

The first room on entering the house is currently used as a dining room.

0:21:070:21:11

-So you have a small porch that leads us into the house.

-Oh, wow!

0:21:110:21:16

-Beams!

-Very old beams.

-It's lovely.

0:21:160:21:20

-Really nice.

-Lots of character.

-Yes.

0:21:200:21:24

Now, I do know with this house move, we are fire obsessed.

0:21:240:21:27

I don't know why I'm looking at you, Michelle, because this is the one.

0:21:270:21:31

-Sian, tell me, how do we rate that fire?

-Yeah, it's amazing.

0:21:310:21:34

It's bigger and...

0:21:340:21:36

-It's a great open space.

-It's a real feature of the room, isn't it?

0:21:360:21:39

-It's really lovely.

-Let's see what you make of the rest.

-OK.

0:21:390:21:42

To the right of the dining room is a modestly-sized living room,

0:21:440:21:47

which is equally characterful.

0:21:470:21:49

Lovely beams again.

0:21:490:21:51

And you might notice just through there, there is a conservatory.

0:21:510:21:54

-OK, yeah.

-OK.

-Yeah, so that's a bonus.

0:21:540:21:58

Because it's not huge, this sitting room, is it?

0:21:580:22:01

-But enough room for you?

-I think so.

-I think so.

0:22:010:22:03

-Yeah, more than enough for the three of us and the two dogs.

-Yeah?

0:22:030:22:07

We've still got the room next door as well, so there is still room.

0:22:070:22:10

So far, we had such a thumbs-up with our first property,

0:22:100:22:13

are you getting a good feeling with this?

0:22:130:22:15

I've kind of got a better feeling about this one.

0:22:150:22:18

We know the kitchen is a really important room for the two of you,

0:22:180:22:21

so let's see what you think of this.

0:22:210:22:25

At the back of the property is an extension which houses

0:22:250:22:28

a spectacular kitchen/diner.

0:22:280:22:29

-So tell me what you think of this room.

-Wow!

0:22:290:22:34

-Incredible.

-Really nice.

0:22:340:22:36

-Surprised?

-Yeah, very.

0:22:360:22:39

From the front of the house, I didn't expect this.

0:22:390:22:42

-Look at the door.

-Oh!

-What did you say...?

0:22:420:22:45

-I always wanted a farmhouse door for the dogs.

-Did you?

0:22:450:22:48

So you can keep an eye on them in the garden.

0:22:480:22:51

There's one thing missing, Sian. Can you live without a fire?

0:22:510:22:54

Yeah, we'll put this on full blast and you'll be toasty warm.

0:22:540:22:57

-Good compromise?

-Yeah, OK, I'll compromise a little bit.

0:22:570:23:01

OK. Well, let's see what you make of upstairs.

0:23:010:23:03

A study which leads to the outside could work as a boot room

0:23:050:23:08

and is the final room on the ground floor.

0:23:080:23:11

Upstairs on the first floor are two bedrooms.

0:23:110:23:15

Both doubles and a generous bathroom.

0:23:150:23:19

That's not all.

0:23:200:23:21

This house has a second floor and a bit of a surprise.

0:23:210:23:25

-We come up here...

-That's incredible!

0:23:250:23:27

..and we have the master.

0:23:270:23:29

-Oh, that's gorgeous!

-Oh, wow!

0:23:290:23:31

There we are. See, this house keeps on giving.

0:23:310:23:34

-It does, doesn't it?

-You don't realise this is here.

0:23:340:23:37

It's got a real modern theme about it, but still old.

0:23:370:23:40

So, have they got the balance right? Character, charm...?

0:23:400:23:43

-Yeah, definitely.

-Still got the character,

0:23:430:23:45

-but it's just got that modern edge about it.

-Yes.

0:23:450:23:48

I'm going to take you back downstairs and outside.

0:23:480:23:52

-OK, brilliant.

-Thank you.

0:23:520:23:54

As well as the large driveway out the front,

0:23:550:23:57

there is a south-facing garden to the rear and a patio area.

0:23:570:24:01

-So...we've actually got an enclosed garden here.

-Yep.

0:24:030:24:08

-Mindful of the dogs.

-Yeah, which is great.

0:24:080:24:10

-Enough of a garden for you both?

-I think so.

0:24:100:24:13

It's bigger than where we are and the setting,

0:24:130:24:15

we don't really need a huge garden, to be fair.

0:24:150:24:17

-We can go out and go on walks and do things we might want to do.

-Yeah.

0:24:170:24:20

I've now got to ask you how much is it on the market for?

0:24:200:24:24

I think over budget, but I'd like it to come in at 375 if possible.

0:24:240:24:30

OK. Michelle?

0:24:300:24:32

I think it's definitely going to be over our budget, unfortunately.

0:24:320:24:35

I'd like it to be about 375.

0:24:350:24:38

Are your fingers crossed in those pockets? Completely crossed.

0:24:380:24:41

I could see your face when you said it, you slightly grimaced.

0:24:410:24:43

Well, you are both right, it is over budget.

0:24:430:24:47

The asking price is £425,000.

0:24:470:24:52

It's worth it, definitely.

0:24:520:24:53

It's a lovely house. Really lovely house.

0:24:530:24:57

-The owners are happy to have a discussion with you.

-Right, OK.

0:24:570:25:00

-They will look at some offers.

-Right, OK.

-Good.

0:25:000:25:03

-I love the house.

-Fancy another look around?

0:25:030:25:05

-Yes, please.

-Go on, then. Please do.

0:25:050:25:07

For a negotiable £425,000 price tag,

0:25:090:25:13

this is a classic stone country cottage,

0:25:130:25:16

which has a great combination of characterful living rooms

0:25:160:25:19

with a contemporary kitchen/diner.

0:25:190:25:22

There are three bedrooms, including a delightful master suite,

0:25:220:25:25

and an enclosed rear garden suitable for the dogs.

0:25:250:25:29

-It's another good-sized bedroom.

-It's a good-sized room, actually.

0:25:290:25:32

-I expected it to be smaller.

-It could be a guest bedroom.

-Definitely.

0:25:320:25:36

-You could still fit a double bed in here.

-Yeah, you would.

0:25:360:25:38

When I saw the house outside for the first time, I thought

0:25:380:25:41

it was absolutely amazing. It looked like a proper little cottage.

0:25:410:25:44

What was the wow factor with us was the master bedroom

0:25:440:25:47

being upstairs in the attic.

0:25:470:25:48

It was amazing.

0:25:480:25:50

It's not something we'd probably have looked at,

0:25:500:25:53

but now we've come inside and saw it,

0:25:530:25:54

I've just fallen in love with it.

0:25:540:25:56

I can understand why it is at the price that it is.

0:25:560:25:59

It's definitely worth the money.

0:25:590:26:01

I just hope that we can take it forward possibly

0:26:010:26:03

and do some negotiating.

0:26:030:26:05

Today has gone so well.

0:26:050:26:08

-All right?

-Yeah.

-Look at you.

0:26:080:26:12

-You're both still smiling. Have you enjoyed it?

-Yeah, brilliant.

-Lovely.

0:26:120:26:16

Good. I'm so pleased. Come on.

0:26:160:26:19

It's the second day of our emotional house-hunt,

0:26:240:26:27

where Sian and Michelle look to move from the city of Peterborough

0:26:270:26:30

to Somerset, with a maximum budget of £400,000.

0:26:300:26:34

Coming up, it looks like it could be love at first sight.

0:26:350:26:39

This is our dream home. Already. I've not even walked through the door.

0:26:390:26:42

And I investigate some unusual excavations.

0:26:420:26:45

So what's actually happened to the bodies, shall we say?

0:26:450:26:49

Yesterday, we showed Sian and Michelle here in Somerset

0:26:500:26:54

two cosy cottages and got two wonderful reactions,

0:26:540:26:57

but not being one to rest on our laurels, today, well,

0:26:570:27:01

the mystery house has got a lot to live up to,

0:27:010:27:04

and I'm hoping for a real divine reaction.

0:27:040:27:07

-So yesterday went rather well, didn't it?

-It did, yes.

0:27:100:27:14

Very emotional.

0:27:140:27:15

So inside, Sian, cos on the outside, we've got

0:27:150:27:18

this exterior that's not giving too much away,

0:27:180:27:21

but go on, share with us what's going on inside.

0:27:210:27:24

There's loads going on, seeing what I could potentially have,

0:27:240:27:27

and I know what I want, and it's just out of that reach

0:27:270:27:30

where I can't get it at the minute and it's frustrating.

0:27:300:27:33

I think with the house being on the market at home,

0:27:330:27:36

we haven't sold it as yet,

0:27:360:27:38

so we're kind of in limbo land and we want to be down here now.

0:27:380:27:42

-Too impatient.

-Yeah. Too impatient.

-Both of us are, really.

0:27:420:27:46

For our mystery house, I'm taking Michelle

0:27:500:27:52

and Sian three miles north to the small village of Holcombe.

0:27:520:27:57

With a 40-minute commute, Holcombe is the closest of all locations to

0:27:570:28:01

Bristol, but far enough away to be set in a beautiful rural landscape.

0:28:010:28:06

With a couple of pubs, a small village shop

0:28:060:28:08

and good schools nearby,

0:28:080:28:10

there is a community to tap into straightaway.

0:28:100:28:13

The village also boasts four churches,

0:28:130:28:16

of which just two are still in use as religious buildings.

0:28:160:28:19

And that's a clue for our mystery house, which is

0:28:190:28:22

located in the heart of the village.

0:28:220:28:24

Michelle and Sian, can I introduce you to your mystery house?

0:28:250:28:29

I feel like you're trying to kill me with a heart attack.

0:28:290:28:32

In a good way, I hope? Really?

0:28:320:28:34

-Yeah, goose pimples up and down my spine.

-It's emotional.

0:28:340:28:39

Completely speechless.

0:28:390:28:42

Oh, Michelle, you've gone as well.

0:28:420:28:45

The reason we've picked it as our mystery

0:28:450:28:47

is you live in a modern property at the moment, very contemporary.

0:28:470:28:51

This dates back to 1890, so it has charisma, it's got charm,

0:28:510:28:56

it's got the original features, but it's very contemporary inside.

0:28:560:29:00

It's beautiful, absolutely beautiful.

0:29:000:29:04

-So I'm guessing you'd like to take a look inside.

-Kind of.

-Come on.

0:29:040:29:08

Let's see what you think.

0:29:080:29:10

Converted in 2003,

0:29:100:29:12

this Methodist chapel has been divided into three homes.

0:29:120:29:16

Our property occupies the whole front end of the building.

0:29:160:29:20

So...

0:29:220:29:23

-What are you thinking?

-I'm not going any further. This is our dream home.

0:29:290:29:34

Already. I've not even walked through the door.

0:29:340:29:37

Well, let's hold judgment, just in case, but I think you're right.

0:29:370:29:42

I don't think you're going to be disappointed.

0:29:420:29:43

Let's start off with the sitting room.

0:29:430:29:46

This 21-foot reception room continues the mix of heritage

0:29:460:29:50

and contemporary interior styling.

0:29:500:29:52

Just the light that comes straight through those windows!

0:29:530:29:58

-Wow!

-It's breathtaking.

0:29:580:29:59

-It's us, isn't it?

-Yeah.

-Yeah. Does the fire work?

0:30:020:30:06

The fire does work, yes, but it's not a traditional wood burner.

0:30:060:30:10

-It's a contemporary burner.

-Lovely burner.

-I could compensate for that.

0:30:100:30:15

Michelle, how do you feel as you walk through the door?

0:30:150:30:19

Exactly how I thought it was going to be inside.

0:30:190:30:22

-Are you scared you might have lost your heart?

-Yes, and I have a bit.

0:30:220:30:27

Amazing.

0:30:270:30:28

It's interesting standing next to you,

0:30:280:30:31

because although you're not saying much...

0:30:310:30:33

There's loads going on in my head.

0:30:330:30:35

I can see that, yeah. Both of you are just taking it all in.

0:30:350:30:39

-Lost for words, that's a rare thing with you, isn't it?

-A little bit.

0:30:390:30:44

-Would you like to see a bit more?

-Yes, please.

-Definitely.

-OK.

0:30:440:30:47

Across the hallway is the kitchen.

0:30:490:30:51

Now, I know you love contemporary modern kitchens.

0:30:540:30:59

-Lovely.

-Incredible.

0:30:590:31:02

-Really nice.

-Really spacious. And bright.

0:31:020:31:06

-You really do love this house, don't you?

-Yeah. It's incredible.

0:31:060:31:10

Upstairs, there are four bedrooms in total.

0:31:100:31:14

Two good-sized doubles, which Ellie could choose from, a single,

0:31:140:31:19

which is currently used as a study, as well as a family bathroom

0:31:190:31:23

-and the main bedroom. This is the master.

-It's lovely.

0:31:230:31:28

-Really spacious, and with the window... Really bright.

-Airy.

0:31:280:31:33

-Still the character because of the ceiling.

-Yes.

-Really lovely.

0:31:330:31:39

-This is exactly what we would do.

-So we've already done it for you.

0:31:390:31:44

-Yeah.

-Yeah.

0:31:440:31:46

Any more thoughts on the house before I take you back outside?

0:31:460:31:50

-Can we stay here?

-Yeah, we'll stay here now.

-Do you love it?

0:31:500:31:55

I do, absolutely. It's us to a T.

0:31:550:31:59

Oh, it's a lot to take on board, isn't it?

0:31:590:32:01

-OK, we're going to head back downstairs, girls.

-No problem.

0:32:010:32:05

Outside, the garden extends out to the front only.

0:32:060:32:09

-And you have your garden right here.

-OK, so no back garden?

-There's not.

0:32:110:32:15

I know it's hard to believe when you're walking around

0:32:150:32:18

because it's such a large house, but the chapel itself is

0:32:180:32:20

-divided into three different properties.

-Right, OK.

-OK.

0:32:200:32:23

So we've got a third of it here.

0:32:230:32:24

So if you look to the side, and there's a fence, that's where your land actually finishes.

0:32:240:32:28

-We like this property, don't we, girls?

-Yeah, too much.

0:32:280:32:31

Well, let's see if it is too much, because how much for the final time

0:32:310:32:35

is the mystery house on the market for? Guess the price

0:32:350:32:38

of the Methodist Chapel.

0:32:380:32:40

I reckon it would be over budget compared to yesterday's - 550.

0:32:400:32:44

-OK. And your top budget?

-Is 400.

-Yeah. Michelle?

0:32:440:32:48

I'd say exactly the same. I'd go about 440.

0:32:480:32:53

Oh, the asking price for the mystery house is...

0:32:530:32:58

Don't hate me, will you?

0:32:580:32:59

Go on.

0:32:590:33:01

£375,000.

0:33:010:33:03

-Really?

-Yes.

-Really?

-Yes!

0:33:030:33:05

Wow.

0:33:050:33:08

-Gosh. Really?

-Hm-mm.

0:33:090:33:12

-Under budget.

-Are you crying?

0:33:140:33:18

You're making me well up, just seeing your face.

0:33:180:33:22

Where do I sign?

0:33:230:33:25

Is it cheque-book time? How do you feel, Michelle?

0:33:250:33:29

Oh, overwhelmed, and it's a good price, really good price, so yeah.

0:33:290:33:34

I think I know what you two are going to want to do. Go on.

0:33:340:33:37

-Explore, on your own.

-We will, thank you.

0:33:370:33:41

I got a bit emotional then, I don't mind admitting,

0:33:410:33:44

because they loved this property from the minute they stood here.

0:33:440:33:48

It's got everything that they and Ellie want. I am delighted.

0:33:480:33:53

So for 25,000 under budget,

0:33:550:33:58

this £375,000 converted Methodist chapel

0:33:580:34:02

gives two generous living spaces, four bedrooms,

0:34:020:34:06

original Gothic style features mixed with a contemporary finish,

0:34:060:34:09

and is right in the heart of a village location.

0:34:090:34:14

-Oh, wow.

-Oh, wow.

-Incredible, isn't it?

0:34:140:34:19

Didn't expect that, did you?

0:34:200:34:22

-No, not at all.

-That is amazing.

0:34:220:34:27

-You'd just want to lie in the bath all the time, wouldn't you?

-Yeah.

0:34:270:34:30

When I saw it was a chapel, it kind of stopped me in my tracks.

0:34:300:34:34

I wasn't expecting to see that, but it was a complete surprise

0:34:340:34:37

and a good surprise.

0:34:370:34:39

When I walked inside, it was just my dream home.

0:34:390:34:42

The clean lines, the attention to detail,

0:34:420:34:45

all the windows, it's just magnificent.

0:34:450:34:48

When I heard the price, I was completely overwhelmed.

0:34:480:34:50

I didn't realise it was going to come in at that price.

0:34:500:34:53

I thought it'd be a lot higher, so that was great to hear.

0:34:530:34:55

Really, really good.

0:34:550:34:57

When I first saw the property, I felt very emotional.

0:34:570:35:00

It just felt like home even before I stepped through the front door.

0:35:000:35:03

You want to achieve that dream lifestyle,

0:35:030:35:06

and this is what it's all about, coming home to something like this.

0:35:060:35:11

This house hunting in Somerset has been emotional, hasn't it?

0:35:110:35:14

Pure emotion.

0:35:140:35:15

-How are you feeling?

-Drained and emotional.

-Really?

0:35:150:35:18

-I've got a headache.

-You're confused now! Do you want some time?

0:35:180:35:23

Collect your thoughts, have a chat on your own

0:35:230:35:26

-and then we'll see what your next step is going to be.

-Yeah.

0:35:260:35:29

The city of Bath

0:35:340:35:35

is known throughout the world for its architectural wonders.

0:35:350:35:38

No more so than for its incredibly large parish church, Bath Abbey.

0:35:380:35:43

I've come to meet archivist Lucy Rutherford,

0:35:430:35:46

to learn more about this site and the intriguing works going on.

0:35:460:35:50

Lucy, thank you for inviting us to Bath Abbey.

0:35:510:35:54

It's a treat to be here. The most beautiful building.

0:35:540:35:57

But you've also got some serious repair work going on, haven't you?

0:35:570:36:01

Yes, we have at the moment.

0:36:010:36:02

This is not usual for us to have quite so much building work.

0:36:020:36:05

I'm intrigued to know more about that.

0:36:050:36:07

First of all, can I ask you about the building itself?

0:36:070:36:10

I believe there's been three churches on this site.

0:36:100:36:13

-Is that correct?

-Yes, that's right.

0:36:130:36:15

There have been, in the last thousand years, an Anglo-Saxon abbey,

0:36:150:36:18

then a huge Norman cathedral, much bigger than the present church.

0:36:180:36:22

-Bigger than this?

-Yes. And this building was started in the 1490s.

0:36:220:36:27

The abbey, built from Bath stone,

0:36:270:36:29

is particularly noted for its intricate ceiling.

0:36:290:36:32

-Do we know how high up that ceiling is?

-It's about 80 feet or 24 metres.

0:36:320:36:37

-It seems higher to me!

-It does to me as well!

-Yeah.

0:36:370:36:40

It is beautiful.

0:36:400:36:41

You do have to stand and look up and just admire the work.

0:36:410:36:44

This type of fan vaulting is considered to be

0:36:440:36:47

one of the finest examples in the country.

0:36:470:36:49

Looking around, I've noticed there are so many memorials on the wall.

0:36:490:36:54

We're surrounded by them.

0:36:540:36:56

They are absolutely everywhere in this building.

0:36:560:36:59

Only Westminster Abbey has more memorials than we do here.

0:36:590:37:02

These memorials, they're closely linked with this building work?

0:37:020:37:05

-Something different is going on here?

-They are indeed.

0:37:050:37:08

-Is it possible to see some of it?

-Yes, it is.

0:37:080:37:10

-We can go and see it now.

-Thank you.

0:37:100:37:12

For more than 300 years, both the landed gentry

0:37:140:37:17

and ordinary townspeople have been interned in the abbey.

0:37:170:37:21

Lucy, I understand that people are buried under these stones.

0:37:210:37:25

Do we know how many there are?

0:37:250:37:26

We've had a lot of estimates

0:37:260:37:27

about how many burials there are under the floor.

0:37:270:37:30

We think somewhere between 4,000 and 6,000 burials, approximately.

0:37:300:37:34

Oh, my goodness!

0:37:340:37:35

I thought you were going to say 20 or 30 people in total.

0:37:350:37:38

That's one of the reasons you're doing the building work, isn't it?

0:37:380:37:41

It is, yes.

0:37:410:37:42

Because there have been so many burials under the floor,

0:37:420:37:45

this has caused a certain amount of...settlement.

0:37:450:37:48

That's a nice word!

0:37:480:37:51

This means that there have been large voids left under the floor,

0:37:510:37:54

which is causing it to gradually subside.

0:37:540:37:57

If we don't take the opportunity in the medium term to put this right,

0:37:570:38:01

the floor is in danger of collapsing.

0:38:010:38:03

As it is a unique and unprecedented project,

0:38:040:38:07

they're currently working on a test section of the floor.

0:38:070:38:11

The stones are being removed

0:38:110:38:12

and they are digging down to fill in the air pockets,

0:38:120:38:15

which should stabilise the floor before the stones are replaced.

0:38:150:38:19

What's actually happened to the bodies, shall we say?

0:38:190:38:23

We knew that we would find human remains

0:38:230:38:25

because we were aware of so many burials under the floor.

0:38:250:38:28

We've been very careful, as we've been doing this work,

0:38:280:38:31

to carefully store them.

0:38:310:38:33

They will be reinterred under the floor with a service.

0:38:330:38:36

Whilst they are doing this essential work,

0:38:360:38:39

they are adding some modern comforts.

0:38:390:38:41

At the moment we are heated with a very antiquated Victorian system,

0:38:410:38:45

which costs us a great deal of money to run.

0:38:450:38:48

Because we are taking up the floor, this gives us

0:38:480:38:50

a unique opportunity to put in underfloor heating

0:38:500:38:53

in a partnership to use the energy from the hot water springs

0:38:530:38:57

in the Roman baths next door to the abbey.

0:38:570:38:59

What a difference it's going to make.

0:38:590:39:01

It will make a huge difference.

0:39:010:39:03

The abbey will be much more hospitable and warm in the winter

0:39:030:39:06

and it will be a sustainable, environmentally-friendly way

0:39:060:39:09

of heating this building.

0:39:090:39:11

It is absolutely stunning.

0:39:110:39:13

Hopefully, generations will be able to enjoy it as well.

0:39:130:39:17

-Lucy, thank you very much indeed.

-Thank you.

0:39:170:39:19

That has to be one of the most pleasurable house hunts ever

0:39:280:39:32

here in Somerset.

0:39:320:39:33

Michelle and Sian loved all three of our properties.

0:39:330:39:37

But are they in a position to put an offer on any of them?

0:39:370:39:40

Shall we go and find out?

0:39:400:39:41

Michelle and Sian, I must admit, when we started this tour

0:39:460:39:49

of Somerset,

0:39:490:39:50

I didn't realise quite how emotional it was going to be.

0:39:500:39:52

-Did you?

-No.

-Not at all. It's been such an amazing experience.

0:39:520:39:57

We've learnt loads.

0:39:570:39:59

Let's talk about the properties that we've seen.

0:39:590:40:01

With you two, all three properties got such great ratings, didn't they?

0:40:010:40:06

They all gave us something that we were looking for.

0:40:060:40:09

They all had the fires, the quirkiness,

0:40:090:40:12

the picture postcard kind of setting.

0:40:120:40:14

But with that last house, it was just so overwhelming.

0:40:140:40:17

With the final property, the mystery house,

0:40:170:40:20

both of you literally dissolved in tears looking at the chapel.

0:40:200:40:24

Completely. We both felt exactly the same way about it.

0:40:240:40:28

You said you weren't going to agree. You've agreed the whole way!

0:40:280:40:32

We scare ourselves, I think. We do have the same tastes.

0:40:330:40:36

As you both lost your head and your hearts to the mystery house,

0:40:360:40:39

what is the logical next step?

0:40:390:40:41

Our next step would be to involve Ellie

0:40:410:40:44

because she is the most important person in our lives,

0:40:440:40:47

contact the vendors and speak to them

0:40:470:40:50

and bring Ellie over and see the property with us.

0:40:500:40:52

-That's great.

-See if she loves it as much as we do.

0:40:520:40:55

You're both in that place where you're desperate to find a house.

0:40:550:40:59

-We are, yeah.

-We really want to get down here as quick as we can.

0:40:590:41:03

But no different than any other person. We've got to sell

0:41:030:41:07

-the house first, which is always the frustration of it all.

-Yes.

0:41:070:41:10

The only blot on the Somerset landscape is your property

-back in Peterborough, isn't it?

-Yes. That's the only frustrating thing.

0:41:140:41:18

It's been on the market just over a month now.

0:41:180:41:21

We'd like to go back home and start to think about what we can do,

0:41:210:41:25

with trying to sell the house, maybe approach the owners

0:41:250:41:29

and see if we can come up with some form of negotiations.

0:41:290:41:34

If you had sold your property, what would you be doing today?

0:41:340:41:38

-I would like to think we would be exchanging.

-Really?

0:41:380:41:41

-So you are that desperate to move?!

-Without a shadow of a doubt.

0:41:410:41:46

It's worth speaking to the owners of the mystery house.

0:41:460:41:49

Just giving them that intent, telling them

0:41:490:41:51

how serious you are and see if they will hang on a little for you.

0:41:510:41:54

-I'm thrilled we've been able to help...

-Thank you.

0:41:540:41:57

..thrilled to have found you a fabulous property

0:41:570:41:59

close to the family but, most importantly,

0:41:590:42:02

right for the three of you.

0:42:020:42:04

I can't tell you how much I'm going to keep everything crossed

0:42:040:42:07

that you get that property and you sell your house in Peterborough.

0:42:070:42:10

-Thank you so much, girls. It's been an absolute pleasure.

-Thank you.

0:42:100:42:13

We've had tears and laughter, a great recipe for a house search.

0:42:150:42:19

Having found Sian and Michelle that perfect property, the girls

0:42:190:42:24

are now more desperate than ever to sell their home in Peterborough.

0:42:240:42:27

Let's hope they find a buyer soon

0:42:270:42:29

so they can complete on their escape to Somerset, together as a family.

0:42:290:42:35

We wish them all the best. See you next time.

0:42:350:42:37

Sian and Michelle returned to the mystery house

0:42:390:42:41

with their daughter, who loves it as much as they do.

0:42:410:42:44

Their property in Peterborough is still unsold,

0:42:440:42:47

which is holding them back.

0:42:470:42:48

But with buyers booked in for a second viewing,

0:42:480:42:51

they are hoping that is a situation that will change soon.
