I'm constantly taken aback by the huge variety of | 0:00:02 | 0:00:04
property styles in Britain - from characterful | 0:00:04 | 0:00:06
timber-framed cottages to grand townhouses. | 0:00:06 | 0:00:10
But sometimes, | 0:00:10 | 0:00:11
the insides don't live up to the expectations on the outside. | 0:00:11 | 0:00:15
So, we've gathered together the most talented amateur | 0:00:15 | 0:00:18
interior designers who think they could be the next big thing | 0:00:18 | 0:00:20
to show us how it's done. But it's not as easy as it looks. | 0:00:20 | 0:00:24
Oh, no! I'm panicking! | 0:00:24 | 0:00:25
GLASS SMASHES | 0:00:25 | 0:00:26
It's a bit make-or-break, really. | 0:00:28 | 0:00:30
Across three knockout episodes, | 0:00:30 | 0:00:31
a group of designers will compete for one place in finals week. | 0:00:31 | 0:00:35
Oh, why isn't easy? | 0:00:35 | 0:00:38
I just like to do things properly. | 0:00:38 | 0:00:40
Oh, that's wonderful! | 0:00:40 | 0:00:43
Judging them, two industry experts - Daniel Hopwood... | 0:00:43 | 0:00:46
To make it through to the final four, | 0:00:46 | 0:00:48
they will have to impress with every inch of their designs. | 0:00:48 | 0:00:51
..and Sophie Robinson. | 0:00:51 | 0:00:53
These designs really do need to be outstanding. | 0:00:53 | 0:00:56
They'll be scrutinising presentation skills... | 0:00:56 | 0:00:59
-That's not the way to present somebody. -..artistic flair... | 0:00:59 | 0:01:03
-Have you ever seen that done before? -No, it's weird. | 0:01:03 | 0:01:06
..and how well they deliver their brief. | 0:01:06 | 0:01:09
-Pretty amazing transformation. -Absolutely beautiful. | 0:01:09 | 0:01:12
In the finals, the best will face giants of the design world - | 0:01:12 | 0:01:16
-Oliver Heath... -Oh, my word! | 0:01:16 | 0:01:18
-..Orla Kiely... -It does look quite rough. | 0:01:18 | 0:01:21
-..and Kelly Hoppen. -I want perfection. | 0:01:21 | 0:01:24
But only one can be crowned winner | 0:01:25 | 0:01:27
of The Great Interior Design Challenge. | 0:01:27 | 0:01:29
Last time, three designers battled to impress the judges. | 0:01:37 | 0:01:40
They said they want a bit of quirky but not too wacky. | 0:01:40 | 0:01:43
-I don't think this is wacky. -It's looking a little bonkers. | 0:01:43 | 0:01:47
-One went home. Two of them made it through. -I'm proud of it. | 0:01:47 | 0:01:52
I put a lot of effort into it. | 0:01:52 | 0:01:54
It is a total transformation. | 0:01:54 | 0:01:57
Now things are getting even tougher. | 0:01:57 | 0:02:00
This time, our amateurs will be tackling an attic bedroom | 0:02:00 | 0:02:02
each in two riverside properties in Marlow. | 0:02:02 | 0:02:06
It's a clash of experience versus raw talent... | 0:02:06 | 0:02:10
Sarah - she is such a class act. | 0:02:10 | 0:02:12
Her cool, calm nature shows in every inch of her accomplished schemes. | 0:02:12 | 0:02:16
Jamie is full of youthful creativity, | 0:02:16 | 0:02:18
but surprisingly sophisticated. | 0:02:18 | 0:02:21
-..as the designers fight... -Aargh! | 0:02:21 | 0:02:23
-..to please their homeowners... -I am worried! | 0:02:23 | 0:02:26
-..and impress the judges. -There's all of that going on in the walls. | 0:02:26 | 0:02:29
It's going to feel a bit hectic. | 0:02:29 | 0:02:30
Whoa! That looks a lot brighter than it should be. | 0:02:30 | 0:02:34
It's not beautiful and it's almost useful. | 0:02:34 | 0:02:37
I'm absolutely done. | 0:02:37 | 0:02:39
There's only one quarterfinal place up for grabs. | 0:02:39 | 0:02:43
The designer going through is... | 0:02:43 | 0:02:46
First up, the location for this epic design battle may look pretty, | 0:02:53 | 0:02:57
but the unusual rooms won't be a pleasure cruise. | 0:02:57 | 0:03:01
These houses beside the river in picturesque Marlow do look rather | 0:03:01 | 0:03:04
strange with their angular roof and their white weatherboarding. | 0:03:04 | 0:03:07
They were built in the 1960s - | 0:03:07 | 0:03:08
a decade that can be unfairly knocked for its architecture | 0:03:08 | 0:03:12
but, actually, it was a brilliantly inventive time | 0:03:12 | 0:03:14
when the way in which we lived was radically rethought. | 0:03:14 | 0:03:17
Now, our designers have to be equally inventive as they transform | 0:03:17 | 0:03:21
a bedroom each. | 0:03:21 | 0:03:22
Headboard - that's going to be MDF and then the front's going to be the scaffolding boards. | 0:03:29 | 0:03:33
The designers have been working on a brief from their homeowners | 0:03:33 | 0:03:35
for the past week. | 0:03:35 | 0:03:37
One step away from the quarterfinals, which is | 0:03:37 | 0:03:39
absolutely mind-blowing. | 0:03:39 | 0:03:41
They have a small team including a builder and a decorator... | 0:03:41 | 0:03:45
Paint it all white. | 0:03:45 | 0:03:46
I'll mask is all off and then you paint the yellow in the putty | 0:03:46 | 0:03:49
-and then come back and paint that one. -No problem. -Yeah? | 0:03:49 | 0:03:52
..and just £1,000 and three days to complete their transformations. | 0:03:52 | 0:03:57
Competition's definitely getting tougher and I'm up against my buddy | 0:03:57 | 0:04:00
Jamie this time, so I'm bittersweet, but we're both in it to win it. | 0:04:00 | 0:04:04
Where to start? | 0:04:07 | 0:04:08
The first designer battling for a quarterfinal place | 0:04:09 | 0:04:13
is 41-year-old garden designer Sarah. | 0:04:13 | 0:04:15
Sarah consistently delivers competent, cohesive schemes, | 0:04:15 | 0:04:21
but she's had two traditional briefs. | 0:04:21 | 0:04:23
This time, I'm wondering how she's going to handle a different look. | 0:04:23 | 0:04:27
Before Sarah started work, her attic room was boysy and bland, | 0:04:27 | 0:04:31
which Sophie and Daniel checked out before work began. | 0:04:31 | 0:04:35
Looking at it right now, the layout isn't that bad, | 0:04:35 | 0:04:38
but it does just look a little bit boring. | 0:04:38 | 0:04:40
It actually looks a bit like a teenager's room. | 0:04:40 | 0:04:42
-This room needs to go onto the next level. -Sarah's designing for Jay. | 0:04:42 | 0:04:47
He's away travelling at the moment but wants a more grown-up, | 0:04:47 | 0:04:49
masculine bedroom when he returns to the family home. | 0:04:49 | 0:04:53
It's almost like creating a studio flat, if you like. | 0:04:53 | 0:04:56
It needs to be his sleeping space, somewhere to work | 0:04:56 | 0:04:58
and then probably to have some friends round, too. | 0:04:58 | 0:05:00
But the difficulty with Sarah is she's a real vintage girl. | 0:05:00 | 0:05:03
This guy wants bachelor pad. | 0:05:03 | 0:05:05
Yes, we really want to see Sarah deliver a very contemporary look. | 0:05:05 | 0:05:09
Sarah's take on contemporary? | 0:05:09 | 0:05:11
A yellow putty and black colour palette in jagged blocks. | 0:05:11 | 0:05:15
The room will be dominated by an ambitious wardrobe, | 0:05:15 | 0:05:17
shelf and desk unit. | 0:05:17 | 0:05:19
This brief is not really my style. | 0:05:19 | 0:05:21
My style is more eclectic, so I'm stepping out of my comfort zones. | 0:05:21 | 0:05:26
In Jay's absence, Sarah had to get her ideas past | 0:05:26 | 0:05:29
Mum and Dad, Lynne and John, and impress Sophie and Daniel who, once | 0:05:29 | 0:05:33
again, will be judging how well each designer presents their schemes. | 0:05:33 | 0:05:37
The yellow's going to wrap around the back section of the wall | 0:05:37 | 0:05:41
and then this putty colour is going to come up | 0:05:41 | 0:05:43
and across the top of the bed to create a kind of visual canopy. | 0:05:43 | 0:05:48
I think he'll love this yellow. | 0:05:48 | 0:05:50
The putty colour doesn't leap out at me. | 0:05:50 | 0:05:53
So, that's a base palette that's going to soften everything else | 0:05:53 | 0:05:56
-and allow it to be a bit more graphic in other ways. -Yeah. | 0:05:56 | 0:05:59
So I think it's quite important to keep that. | 0:05:59 | 0:06:02
So I've actually found this amazing tape which is a magnetic black tape. | 0:06:02 | 0:06:07
-So it means that you can stick up postcards. -What a nice idea. | 0:06:07 | 0:06:12
She also plans to feature accessories | 0:06:12 | 0:06:14
inspired by a love of travel. | 0:06:14 | 0:06:16
-The accent colours that I'm using are blacks... -OK. | 0:06:16 | 0:06:20
-..tan, leather, denim... -Yeah. | 0:06:20 | 0:06:23
..and also elements of fabrics from around the world. | 0:06:23 | 0:06:27
These are fabrics I would never think of using myself but, | 0:06:27 | 0:06:30
to him, hopefully, that will be cool and modern. | 0:06:30 | 0:06:34
I'm so excited about Sarah's scheme, | 0:06:34 | 0:06:36
because not only has she moved away from her classic, vintage look, | 0:06:36 | 0:06:40
but she's created something really new | 0:06:40 | 0:06:42
and exciting with all these sort of different angles, | 0:06:42 | 0:06:44
which are going to change the perspective of that room. | 0:06:44 | 0:06:47
-You do love a bit of a jaunty angle, don't you? -Oh, I do! | 0:06:47 | 0:06:49
I know, I can tell! But, you know, at the same time, | 0:06:49 | 0:06:51
it is a bedroom and my concern is there's all of that | 0:06:51 | 0:06:54
going on in the walls, it's going to feel a bit hectic. | 0:06:54 | 0:06:57
With work well under way, it isn't the jaunty angles in question. | 0:06:57 | 0:07:01
The putty colour's not quite what I imagine. | 0:07:01 | 0:07:06
It's murky. | 0:07:06 | 0:07:08
I think we have to suspend judgment. | 0:07:08 | 0:07:11
Well, they won't have to wait long as, with the walls now washed, | 0:07:11 | 0:07:15
Sarah's masking out shapes ready for the colours. | 0:07:15 | 0:07:17
-Does that look straight? -Yeah, that's a straight line. | 0:07:17 | 0:07:21
There are more lines and angles across Sarah's ambitious shelving, | 0:07:21 | 0:07:24
desk and wardrobe unit, which will cover the entire back wall. | 0:07:24 | 0:07:28
From the back, you can see large timbers either side of the wardrobe. | 0:07:28 | 0:07:31
-We're going to box the wardrobe in. -Yeah. | 0:07:31 | 0:07:33
So what we've got to do is get all this stuff upstairs. | 0:07:33 | 0:07:36
Oh, don't look at me! | 0:07:36 | 0:07:37
THEY LAUGH | 0:07:37 | 0:07:38
Next up is 21-year-old Jamie - a sales assistant from County Durham. | 0:07:44 | 0:07:49
Jamie doesn't always take into consideration | 0:07:49 | 0:07:51
the needs of his client or the demands of the space. | 0:07:51 | 0:07:54
This time, he's really got to get those right. | 0:07:54 | 0:07:58
Yeah, out of my comfort zone. Feel a bit scared with this one. | 0:07:58 | 0:08:01
Perhaps with good reason as his room started off uber-colourful | 0:08:01 | 0:08:05
and uber-cluttered. | 0:08:05 | 0:08:07
I tell you what's really banging me in the face in this room, | 0:08:07 | 0:08:10
is the colour. I mean, wow! | 0:08:10 | 0:08:13
This homeowner has gone for it but it's not really working, is it? | 0:08:13 | 0:08:16
And I think rule of thumb is maybe just go for | 0:08:16 | 0:08:18
three colours as your main story. You can always add more. | 0:08:18 | 0:08:22
Jamie's client is university student Betty, | 0:08:22 | 0:08:25
who wanted a hippy chic bedroom with colours inspired by | 0:08:25 | 0:08:28
an Indian sari and plenty of practical storage. | 0:08:28 | 0:08:32
Designing wardrobes in a tight space like this isn't going to be easy. | 0:08:32 | 0:08:35
And while the brief might sound like lots of fun, | 0:08:35 | 0:08:37
this sort of like bohemian multicoloured look, making | 0:08:37 | 0:08:41
that feel quite sophisticated and coherent is going to be really hard. | 0:08:41 | 0:08:45
Hoping he'd pick the right mix of ethnic colours, | 0:08:46 | 0:08:49
Jamie's using pink, blue, mint green and a bright and paler orange. | 0:08:49 | 0:08:54
With Betty at university, | 0:08:54 | 0:08:56
it was up to mum Chrissie to sign off the design. | 0:08:56 | 0:08:59
This is the colour that I've got for the main back wall, and that's | 0:08:59 | 0:09:02
also going to follow through | 0:09:02 | 0:09:03
and kind of going to this wall with the door. | 0:09:03 | 0:09:05
-OK. -The actual headboard that I'm going to be doing is a storage | 0:09:05 | 0:09:08
headboard, and this is the wood that I'm going to be using. | 0:09:08 | 0:09:10
-It's kind of distressed pink. -Yeah, that's lovely. | 0:09:10 | 0:09:12
-That's probably a favourite colour. -Yeah? -Yeah. | 0:09:12 | 0:09:15
Um, I wanted to pick a lighter colour for the bottom wall | 0:09:15 | 0:09:18
-over there, which is where the seating area's going to be. -Um... | 0:09:18 | 0:09:21
-I'm not so sure about this colour here. -Right. | 0:09:23 | 0:09:25
But then, as long as you just bear in mind that the | 0:09:25 | 0:09:28
overall is going to be that very rich Indian sari, vibrant colour. | 0:09:28 | 0:09:34
-Yeah. -This is a very good colour. This is very... -The teal? -Yeah. | 0:09:34 | 0:09:39
So with the sort of accessories and the cushions and the throws, | 0:09:39 | 0:09:42
that's what I want to be bringing that colour. Um... | 0:09:42 | 0:09:45
Jamie may not have got all his shades spot-on | 0:09:45 | 0:09:48
but he's out to impress with his wardrobe built into the eaves | 0:09:48 | 0:09:51
and innovative headboard storage. | 0:09:51 | 0:09:53
So, the bed's staying in the same place. | 0:09:53 | 0:09:55
The depth is going to be about the thickness of kind | 0:09:55 | 0:09:58
of a scaffolding board and there's going to be | 0:09:58 | 0:10:00
-the dug-outs in the side for the shoes to be kept. -That's interesting. | 0:10:00 | 0:10:03
The wardrobe's actually going to be sitting in that back corner there. | 0:10:03 | 0:10:06
-I just thought that was the best position within the room to kind of access. -It's really tricky. | 0:10:06 | 0:10:10
I think you've done really well to interpret the brief as you have. | 0:10:10 | 0:10:13
-As long as it stays bright, the richness is really important. -Yeah. | 0:10:13 | 0:10:18
I think Jamie's come up with a very interesting | 0:10:18 | 0:10:20
choice of colours but I'm not sure they're quite the right tone. | 0:10:20 | 0:10:23
They're what I call sort of sorbet shades | 0:10:23 | 0:10:25
and this homeowner wanted something which was a lot more | 0:10:25 | 0:10:28
kind of ethnic - those lovely rich Indian colours. | 0:10:28 | 0:10:31
And I don't think those colours have got enough energy. | 0:10:31 | 0:10:35
I don't know. I just feel stupid. | 0:10:35 | 0:10:39
I think I got the colours right, | 0:10:40 | 0:10:42
just not the intensity of the colours. | 0:10:42 | 0:10:44
I went too kind of pale with certain ones. | 0:10:44 | 0:10:47
With the current scheme very bright Jamie's decorator also has | 0:10:47 | 0:10:51
concerns about his paler shades. | 0:10:51 | 0:10:52
The colours are really vivid. | 0:10:52 | 0:10:54
I know. | 0:10:54 | 0:10:55
Yeah, and it's going to be a good three or four coats just to | 0:10:55 | 0:10:57
-neutralise it, just to blank it all out before we add colour. -Right. | 0:10:57 | 0:11:01
With half the day gone both designers are up against it, | 0:11:04 | 0:11:09
but the judges need to give them feedback on their presentations. | 0:11:09 | 0:11:13
It's now the third time they've pitched and Sophie | 0:11:13 | 0:11:15
and Daniel's expectations are higher than ever. | 0:11:15 | 0:11:18
The first one I came last, | 0:11:18 | 0:11:20
the second one I came last, and this one I've come last. No. | 0:11:20 | 0:11:24
I know it didn't go very good so I just wasn't very confident | 0:11:24 | 0:11:27
in it and I think that definitely showed. | 0:11:27 | 0:11:29
We'll see what they say. | 0:11:29 | 0:11:31
I've done a lot more this time. If that wasn't good enough, what is? | 0:11:33 | 0:11:37
With a quarterfinal place at stake the designers will be ranked, | 0:11:39 | 0:11:43
which will count in the judges' final deliberation. | 0:11:43 | 0:11:45
Overall, we'd like to say that we think you got a lovely | 0:11:49 | 0:11:52
rapport with both of your homeowners. | 0:11:52 | 0:11:54
Jamie, I love the fact that you created all these samples. | 0:11:54 | 0:11:56
For example, the crochet pieces and the ruffles. | 0:11:56 | 0:11:59
They really help the homeowner imagine what you want to do. | 0:11:59 | 0:12:02
But I don't feel that your presentations have moved on very much. | 0:12:02 | 0:12:05
I think if you had rendered those drawings that would've been | 0:12:05 | 0:12:08
a vast improvement. | 0:12:08 | 0:12:09
You had a really complicated design to communicate to your homeowner | 0:12:11 | 0:12:14
and the sketch that you made really helps see that room in 3D. | 0:12:14 | 0:12:18
It was excellent. | 0:12:18 | 0:12:19
However, we felt like you just lost a bit of soul in your presentation. | 0:12:19 | 0:12:24
There was no touchy-feely. It was all a bit ironed-out, | 0:12:24 | 0:12:27
flat board, lost a sense of creativity. | 0:12:27 | 0:12:29
So, balancing on what you did well and not so well, we're going | 0:12:30 | 0:12:35
to put... | 0:12:35 | 0:12:36
..Sarah in first place. Which means, Jamie, you came second. | 0:12:38 | 0:12:41
Pumped. I'm feeling good. | 0:12:43 | 0:12:46
They were quite right, it needed more texture | 0:12:47 | 0:12:50
which is why I brought along the fabric and the belt | 0:12:50 | 0:12:52
because I thought that would bring that in. | 0:12:52 | 0:12:54
But, obviously, they want it stapled to the board instead. | 0:12:54 | 0:12:57
I'm not saying what I'm thinking. | 0:12:59 | 0:13:00
I went over the brief and every time it's gone wrong. | 0:13:00 | 0:13:03
Rachel won first. Lily won last time. | 0:13:03 | 0:13:06
I'd like to win but I think after this briefing | 0:13:07 | 0:13:10
it's knocked my confidence a little tiny bit. | 0:13:10 | 0:13:13
Erm... | 0:13:15 | 0:13:16
Both amateur designers are busy transforming rooms | 0:13:18 | 0:13:21
they hope will be anything but run-of-the-mill. | 0:13:21 | 0:13:24
-That is a brilliant colour. -Yes, I like it. | 0:13:24 | 0:13:27
Perhaps divining inspiration from the development's past life. | 0:13:27 | 0:13:32
I love the crisp white lines of these 1960s buildings. | 0:13:32 | 0:13:35
Although they are strikingly Modernist, | 0:13:35 | 0:13:37
they seem to sit very well on the riverside setting probably because | 0:13:37 | 0:13:40
the architects have referred in their design | 0:13:40 | 0:13:43
to the history of the site. | 0:13:43 | 0:13:44
There's been a mill here on the river | 0:13:44 | 0:13:46
since medieval times harnessing the power of the Thames. | 0:13:46 | 0:13:50
And the weather-boarding and the jagged roofline, | 0:13:50 | 0:13:52
the pitched roofs, seem to refer to the buildings that once stood here. | 0:13:52 | 0:13:56
While these houses reference a past, they also embodied | 0:13:57 | 0:14:00
the optimism of the 1960s. | 0:14:00 | 0:14:03
In 1957, the Prime Minister told us all that we'd never had it so good | 0:14:03 | 0:14:06
and homes like these were built for the aspiring professional classes | 0:14:06 | 0:14:10
with their TVs, their fridges and their cars, and had in-built garages | 0:14:10 | 0:14:14
that took up almost the whole of the ground floor. | 0:14:14 | 0:14:17
You need to get right up to the top. | 0:14:21 | 0:14:23
It's lofty space however our amateurs are contending with. | 0:14:23 | 0:14:27
In Jamie's attic room, the pale orange is being tested | 0:14:27 | 0:14:30
on the wall whilst he's trying to work out how to make a new beanbag. | 0:14:30 | 0:14:34
What I did plan to do is take the cover off the original one | 0:14:34 | 0:14:38
and just cut the same shapes as is currently there | 0:14:38 | 0:14:41
and just cut them out of this fabric and sew them back together. | 0:14:41 | 0:14:44
Creating a new cover using the old one as a template | 0:14:44 | 0:14:47
could have worked. However... | 0:14:47 | 0:14:49
You can't take the cover off because the beans are just inside. | 0:14:49 | 0:14:52
They're not in a separate bag. It would just be a mess. | 0:14:52 | 0:14:55
Jamie's inexperience is showing through. | 0:14:56 | 0:14:59
18 minutes later, he's got a plan. | 0:15:04 | 0:15:07
Ditch the template and make a bag from scratch. | 0:15:08 | 0:15:11
What I'm actually thinking about doing now is taking the beans | 0:15:12 | 0:15:16
out of that bag, so just putting the beans | 0:15:16 | 0:15:19
directly into this one, which might be messy. | 0:15:19 | 0:15:22
Jamie's youthful enthusiasm has got him through two rounds | 0:15:23 | 0:15:27
of the competition | 0:15:27 | 0:15:28
as the judges have been impressed by his creativity. | 0:15:28 | 0:15:32
I want it to stand out, but I didn't want it to be too scary. | 0:15:32 | 0:15:35
It's quite bohemian, as well. | 0:15:35 | 0:15:37
What a transformation! | 0:15:37 | 0:15:39
I like this sort of stencilling. | 0:15:39 | 0:15:41
Almost looks like a Fair Isle jumper. | 0:15:41 | 0:15:44
But he sometimes struggled with the fundamental rules | 0:15:44 | 0:15:47
of interior design and spatial planning. | 0:15:47 | 0:15:49
-So, the sofa is here, so it's kind of an L sofa. -It's an L-shaped sofa. | 0:15:50 | 0:15:54
What's on this wall? | 0:15:54 | 0:15:56
It's going to be creative. It's going to be a herb wall, | 0:15:56 | 0:15:59
grow your own herbs and fruit and veg on the wall. | 0:15:59 | 0:16:01
You're going to be sitting at the sofa looking at a herb garden. | 0:16:01 | 0:16:04
THEY LAUGH | 0:16:04 | 0:16:05
Now you've seen the space, how are you finding the practicalities? | 0:16:08 | 0:16:13
Going from last time and not measuring out where the sofa | 0:16:13 | 0:16:15
was going to be and how it was going to work, I learned from that. | 0:16:15 | 0:16:18
-You've got the wardrobe here, haven't you? -Yes. | 0:16:18 | 0:16:20
What it is, the wardrobe's going to have a back section | 0:16:20 | 0:16:23
just for tubs, the front section will have hanging space and shelving. | 0:16:23 | 0:16:26
Tell me about the headboard. You've got some interesting things going on on the headboard. | 0:16:26 | 0:16:30
Yes. I wanted to make a statement headboard. | 0:16:30 | 0:16:32
In the sides is storage for shoes. | 0:16:32 | 0:16:34
-It's quite unusual to have shoe storage in your headboard. -Yeah. | 0:16:34 | 0:16:37
Also unusual, Jamie's choice of pastel colours | 0:16:37 | 0:16:39
to answer a rich, ethnic brief. | 0:16:39 | 0:16:41
Can I ask you how you came to choose the colours? | 0:16:41 | 0:16:44
I know that orange is one of her favourite colours, | 0:16:44 | 0:16:46
so I wanted to bring in different tones and shades of that one. | 0:16:46 | 0:16:49
That's where I got the inspiration from. | 0:16:49 | 0:16:51
And then the dark pinks and teals | 0:16:51 | 0:16:52
are going to be in accessories and throws. | 0:16:52 | 0:16:55
When you said, "Why are you painting that in the orange colour?" | 0:16:55 | 0:16:57
He said, "Because the homeowner likes it." Wrong answer. | 0:16:57 | 0:17:00
He should have said, "Because that orange is soft | 0:17:00 | 0:17:03
"and is quite relaxing to the eye. | 0:17:03 | 0:17:05
He hasn't sort of got that. | 0:17:05 | 0:17:07
Whatever the reason, it seems Jamie is pleased with his choices. | 0:17:07 | 0:17:11
-You like the colour, do you? -Yeah. Do you not? -Yeah. No. I love it. | 0:17:11 | 0:17:14
No. I love it. Once we've got rid of that final bit of cerise | 0:17:14 | 0:17:18
-it will be really sharp and really bright. -Yeah. | 0:17:18 | 0:17:21
While he's feeling positive, it's time to | 0:17:21 | 0:17:24
get those polystyrene beans into his new bag. | 0:17:24 | 0:17:27
Don't know if this is going to work. | 0:17:28 | 0:17:30
He may be short on experience, but not on ingenuity | 0:17:30 | 0:17:33
and has come up with a nifty invention to cut down on spillage. | 0:17:33 | 0:17:37
-A paper-cup funnel. -Do you know what? | 0:17:37 | 0:17:40
What would be the worst thing that would happen? | 0:17:40 | 0:17:43
HE LAUGHS | 0:17:43 | 0:17:45
If like, when it gets judged, | 0:17:45 | 0:17:47
someone jumped on it and it exploded! | 0:17:47 | 0:17:51
I might have to put a sign on saying, "Do not use". | 0:17:52 | 0:17:56
Sarah is also getting to grips with accessories. | 0:18:01 | 0:18:04
She's trying to make a couple of cushions using an ethnic rug | 0:18:04 | 0:18:07
she bought for £75. | 0:18:07 | 0:18:10
Using normal material would be really easy to make a cushion, | 0:18:10 | 0:18:13
but I have to be a bit more thoughtful about this one, | 0:18:13 | 0:18:17
so that it looks right. | 0:18:17 | 0:18:19
And luckily, look, they've put a stripe for me right down the middle of it. | 0:18:21 | 0:18:25
The rug is thick so Sarah's sewing machine has got its work cut out, | 0:18:25 | 0:18:29
especially as she is using denim as backing. | 0:18:29 | 0:18:32
Wasn't sure if my sewing machine would go through a rug. But it did. | 0:18:32 | 0:18:36
Perfect! | 0:18:37 | 0:18:38
Are we done yet? | 0:18:42 | 0:18:44
Sarah's not been resting on the job in previous rounds, | 0:18:45 | 0:18:49
demonstrating to the judges she can deliver a strong look. | 0:18:49 | 0:18:52
I couldn't resist a little bit of floral. Magic. | 0:18:52 | 0:18:56
I really do feel like I'm standing in a country kitchen | 0:18:56 | 0:18:58
which is what the brief was. | 0:18:58 | 0:19:01
But she hasn't always hit the mark with her colour choices. | 0:19:01 | 0:19:05
What a gorgeous colour. He's going to love that. | 0:19:05 | 0:19:09
One green was nice but two greens working together? I don't know. | 0:19:09 | 0:19:13
Yeah, it's a bit of a risky kind of strategy, isn't it? | 0:19:13 | 0:19:16
I'm not going to be able to live with the ceilings in this colour. | 0:19:16 | 0:19:19
There's a lot of shapes going on. | 0:19:21 | 0:19:22
I can see you've been busy with the yellow tape already. | 0:19:22 | 0:19:25
And you've selected a putty colour which the homeowners | 0:19:25 | 0:19:28
don't seem to like. Where have you got with that? | 0:19:28 | 0:19:31
The putty colour is a really great neutral. | 0:19:31 | 0:19:33
What I didn't want to do in here | 0:19:33 | 0:19:35
was have an '80s room. I wanted to soften it. | 0:19:35 | 0:19:38
So, it's more of a blend because you've got putty | 0:19:38 | 0:19:41
and what is the other colour that's going against it? | 0:19:41 | 0:19:43
It's yellow. So, yellow and putty. | 0:19:43 | 0:19:45
It's quite clever that she's using the colour to zone the space. | 0:19:47 | 0:19:51
-Do you think it's going to work though? -That yellow, I'm not sure. | 0:19:51 | 0:19:56
It's the colour selection that is not winning me. | 0:19:56 | 0:19:59
Sarah might be having second thoughts about the tone, as well. | 0:19:59 | 0:20:02
That looks a lot brighter than it should be. | 0:20:02 | 0:20:05
Redesigning awkward attic rooms in three days is tough enough, | 0:20:11 | 0:20:15
but in this third round the judges are raising the stakes, surprising | 0:20:15 | 0:20:19
the designers with a brand-new task they have no idea about whatsoever. | 0:20:19 | 0:20:24
-The judges want to see you. -OK. I wonder what that's about then. | 0:20:24 | 0:20:28
It's time to put the pressure on | 0:20:28 | 0:20:30
so we're going to set a junk-van challenge. | 0:20:30 | 0:20:33
Now, we're getting an upcycle thing that we don't really have time for. | 0:20:33 | 0:20:36
But, yeah, let's do this. | 0:20:36 | 0:20:38
This new challenge is going to test their imaginations, | 0:20:39 | 0:20:42
how well they think on their feet, | 0:20:42 | 0:20:44
and shows what sort of interior designer they really are. | 0:20:44 | 0:20:47
Inside this van we've got a whole heap of junk. | 0:20:49 | 0:20:54
What we'd like you to do is design a one-off product. | 0:20:54 | 0:20:58
It could be your signature piece | 0:20:58 | 0:21:00
something that really sums up you and your style. | 0:21:00 | 0:21:02
We really want you to play to your strengths | 0:21:02 | 0:21:05
and we're going to give you 15 minutes to grab whatever you want. | 0:21:05 | 0:21:09
Off you go. | 0:21:12 | 0:21:13
Sophie and Daniel will simply be deciding | 0:21:13 | 0:21:16
which designer comes up with the best stand-alone product. | 0:21:16 | 0:21:19
-SARAH: -Oh, that was crafty. | 0:21:19 | 0:21:22
-SARAH: -Just like being at a car boot. | 0:21:23 | 0:21:25
The results will be critical in deciding who wins | 0:21:25 | 0:21:28
the quarterfinal place. | 0:21:28 | 0:21:29
That's quite good. | 0:21:33 | 0:21:34
Jamie's junk-van booty includes a wooden stool and a suitcase. | 0:21:34 | 0:21:39
I kind of picked out things that are kind of like myself, | 0:21:39 | 0:21:41
but I can put together. | 0:21:41 | 0:21:43
(I hope he's going to come up with something original, | 0:21:43 | 0:21:45
(because we've seen the suitcase side tables before.) | 0:21:45 | 0:21:48
I picked this for the wheels. | 0:21:48 | 0:21:49
Sarah's haul consists of a hostess trolley, | 0:21:49 | 0:21:53
a '70s pouf and some fabric. | 0:21:53 | 0:21:55
It's a whole load of junk. I've got to turn it into something cool. | 0:21:55 | 0:21:58
The judges have given them 90 minutes on day two | 0:21:59 | 0:22:03
to transform their junk into a standout piece of product design. | 0:22:03 | 0:22:06
I love going to a junk shop and finding things that people | 0:22:06 | 0:22:09
don't want any more and kind of making them new again. | 0:22:09 | 0:22:11
-So, it's kind of perfect. But I've got no ideas. -All right, actually. | 0:22:11 | 0:22:15
This is kind of what I like doing | 0:22:15 | 0:22:17
is making things out of old junk. | 0:22:17 | 0:22:19
So, weirdly, I'm not stressing. I'm quite excited. | 0:22:19 | 0:22:23
With both designers talking the talk, | 0:22:23 | 0:22:26
the judges' expectations will be high. | 0:22:26 | 0:22:28
They'll see what they come up with later on. | 0:22:28 | 0:22:31
It's the afternoon of day one | 0:22:35 | 0:22:37
and there's a long way to go for both designers. | 0:22:37 | 0:22:41
Are we all good? | 0:22:41 | 0:22:43
Yeah, it's all good. Got the main frame going round. | 0:22:43 | 0:22:45
-Yeah. -So, just getting your uprights for the doors. | 0:22:45 | 0:22:48
Then we'll start working on the shelves. | 0:22:48 | 0:22:50
While Sarah's driving her team | 0:22:50 | 0:22:52
to achieve her ambitious wardrobe design, | 0:22:52 | 0:22:54
Jamie's sitting down on the job. | 0:22:54 | 0:22:56
Need thousands of strips. | 0:22:58 | 0:23:00
Thousands, thousands, thousands. | 0:23:00 | 0:23:02
He's making a ruffled cushion by poking offcuts of material | 0:23:02 | 0:23:06
through a piece of hessian. | 0:23:06 | 0:23:08
So, once you've got them in, | 0:23:08 | 0:23:09
it looks like a bow. Then you do them in rows. | 0:23:09 | 0:23:11
Leaving a little bit of a gap, you can do the next row, | 0:23:11 | 0:23:14
they'll kind of pull together and create the ruffle kind of texture. | 0:23:14 | 0:23:18
First couple are really slow. | 0:23:18 | 0:23:20
But once you've got a few in a row you fly with it. | 0:23:23 | 0:23:27
Jamie's chilled-out vibe could be fleeting | 0:23:27 | 0:23:29
as back home from university | 0:23:29 | 0:23:31
to check on progress, his client, Betty. | 0:23:31 | 0:23:34
It is kind of scary to think that she could disagree | 0:23:34 | 0:23:37
with something that I've done. | 0:23:37 | 0:23:39
Betty's mum was worried Jamie's chosen colours could be too pale. | 0:23:39 | 0:23:43
If Betty agrees it could mean a complete rethink. | 0:23:43 | 0:23:46
-I really like the green. -Yeah, I really like the green. | 0:23:46 | 0:23:49
And I like this colour, as well. | 0:23:49 | 0:23:50
-I didn't think I would but I do. -Good. | 0:23:50 | 0:23:52
It seems Jamie needn't have worried. | 0:23:52 | 0:23:55
-I'm so glad it's not bland, which it completely is the opposite. -Good. | 0:23:55 | 0:23:59
-Good. I'm pleased. -I'm really excited. | 0:23:59 | 0:24:02
-Yes. Good. -I'm really excited. | 0:24:02 | 0:24:04
'I feel over the moon with the reaction from Betty.' | 0:24:06 | 0:24:09
That's one of the points that you need to do - please your homeowner. | 0:24:09 | 0:24:12
That's certainly what I've done so, yeah, I'm really happy. | 0:24:12 | 0:24:15
As day one draws to a close, both designers are feeling confident. | 0:24:22 | 0:24:27
-I'm really happy. I'm happy with the way it's gone today. -Yeah. | 0:24:27 | 0:24:30
We've got masses done when I didn't think we would get that much done. | 0:24:30 | 0:24:33
I think that's how I feel. Like, sometimes on the first day, | 0:24:33 | 0:24:36
I haven't even got any paint on the walls. | 0:24:36 | 0:24:38
While Jamie's had his colour scheme approved... | 0:24:38 | 0:24:41
I feel really confident now. | 0:24:41 | 0:24:44
I feel like I can kind of get through to the next stage. | 0:24:44 | 0:24:46
..Sarah's still fretting about hers. | 0:24:46 | 0:24:49
Whoa! That is insanely intense. | 0:24:49 | 0:24:53
The yellow on my walls is a bit brighter than... | 0:24:53 | 0:24:56
-You thought. -..I envisaged. | 0:24:56 | 0:24:59
Not that she's letting it dent her confidence. | 0:24:59 | 0:25:02
Great day today. Think I'm going to go and have a glass of wine now. | 0:25:02 | 0:25:05
Maybe a big pint. | 0:25:05 | 0:25:08
The first day brought straight lines and an awful lot of bright paint. | 0:25:24 | 0:25:29
But the designers still have lots to do to secure a quarterfinal place. | 0:25:29 | 0:25:33
We've got to kind of just push ahead to be the winner. | 0:25:33 | 0:25:37
I'm really excited today. Today is like the day | 0:25:37 | 0:25:40
where you really start to see everything come together. | 0:25:40 | 0:25:43
Sarah's contemporary room is a long way off a cool retreat, though, | 0:25:43 | 0:25:47
and she's yet to convince anyone on her choice of colours, | 0:25:47 | 0:25:51
including her decorator. | 0:25:51 | 0:25:53
I wouldn't really put them together myself | 0:25:53 | 0:25:55
but I'm sure it's going to look great at the end of the day. | 0:25:55 | 0:25:59
HE LAUGHS | 0:25:59 | 0:26:01
More worryingly, Sarah's homeowner still has serious doubts. | 0:26:01 | 0:26:05
Not about the putty colour any more, but the bright yellow. | 0:26:05 | 0:26:08
It's just the massive block of yellow. | 0:26:08 | 0:26:10
It's very bright isn't it? It's strong. | 0:26:10 | 0:26:12
-It's a brighter yellow than in my mind's eye. -Yeah. | 0:26:12 | 0:26:14
-It sees a bright yellow but it's a neon-y, acid-y yellow. -Yeah. | 0:26:14 | 0:26:18
As ever, unflappable Sarah isn't wavering. | 0:26:18 | 0:26:22
-There's a huge block of the putty going up now... -OK, excellent. | 0:26:22 | 0:26:25
..so that's going to really calm it down. | 0:26:25 | 0:26:29
-OK. -You'll see lots of change today. | 0:26:29 | 0:26:31
Also undergoing big change - Jamie's hippy-chic bedroom. | 0:26:33 | 0:26:37
The second coat of mint green is going up while he's busy | 0:26:37 | 0:26:40
outside priming scaffolding planks for his statement headboard. | 0:26:40 | 0:26:44
I'm just giving them a coat of white paint before I put the intense | 0:26:44 | 0:26:47
pink on, so when I distress them the whiteness comes through. | 0:26:47 | 0:26:51
I'm excited now to get these done, | 0:26:51 | 0:26:53
get them distressed, get them waxed, and then get them | 0:26:53 | 0:26:55
onto the headboard and see. | 0:26:55 | 0:26:57
Jamie is getting industrious and back in the day, | 0:26:57 | 0:27:01
Marlow, too, was a centre of industry. | 0:27:01 | 0:27:04
It's easy to forget how important the River Thames was | 0:27:04 | 0:27:07
to the economy and history of towns like Marlow. | 0:27:07 | 0:27:10
The town's wealth was literally built on it. | 0:27:10 | 0:27:13
Water mills made anything from thimbles to paper | 0:27:13 | 0:27:16
and the river would once have been lined with | 0:27:16 | 0:27:18
the cottages of eelmen, wharfingers and bargees | 0:27:18 | 0:27:20
before they were replaced by the grander homes | 0:27:20 | 0:27:23
of the Victorians and the Georgians. | 0:27:23 | 0:27:25
And you can see exactly why. It's not a bad life here on the river. | 0:27:25 | 0:27:29
The mill on this spot was powered by so-called rushes. | 0:27:31 | 0:27:34
There's one right here. | 0:27:34 | 0:27:36
As the concentrated force of the river flowed through it, | 0:27:36 | 0:27:39
it powered a water wheel, providing energy in the pre-electric times. | 0:27:39 | 0:27:43
Most have now disappeared, but this one remains as a nod to the past. | 0:27:43 | 0:27:48
As well as their room schemes the amateurs need to prove to the | 0:27:50 | 0:27:54
judges their design abilities, turning junk from the back of a van | 0:27:54 | 0:27:57
into something special. | 0:27:57 | 0:27:59
This is going to be a time challenge. | 0:27:59 | 0:28:01
We're giving them 90 minutes to see if they can keep their cool | 0:28:01 | 0:28:04
under pressure, and yet, deliver a quality product. | 0:28:04 | 0:28:08
Jamie picked an old suitcase and a wooden stool. | 0:28:08 | 0:28:11
First idea that I've come up with | 0:28:11 | 0:28:13
is creating a storage and seating area with this suitcase. | 0:28:13 | 0:28:17
So, the back will be padded and covered | 0:28:17 | 0:28:19
in this tie-dye fabric, and then the bottom, | 0:28:19 | 0:28:21
I'm going to be using the excess scaffolding boards. | 0:28:21 | 0:28:23
I don't know if I can win, | 0:28:23 | 0:28:25
but this is something that I'll love and something that I will do. | 0:28:25 | 0:28:28
Sarah decided to use a '70s pouf, a hostess trolley and leatherette. | 0:28:28 | 0:28:33
Let's see if there's a way that we can take these feet off... | 0:28:33 | 0:28:37
..and put them on the bottom of this. | 0:28:38 | 0:28:41
And then cover the pouf... | 0:28:41 | 0:28:44
..with leather...ette. | 0:28:45 | 0:28:48
-Both designers have a basic craft box... -I'm not impressed. | 0:28:51 | 0:28:55
And their builders at their disposal. | 0:28:55 | 0:28:58
-You want to fit it onto that stool? -Yeah. | 0:28:58 | 0:29:01
Jamie is cleverly using left over scaffolding boards to create | 0:29:01 | 0:29:04
a seat in the suitcase while he hastily makes a cushion. | 0:29:04 | 0:29:08
As you can tell, I haven't cut anything neat at all. | 0:29:08 | 0:29:11
Literally rushed to get it done. Crazy things. | 0:29:11 | 0:29:15
Jamie's come up with a brilliant idea. | 0:29:17 | 0:29:19
He's got a multifunctional piece of furniture that's a stool, | 0:29:19 | 0:29:22
a table and storage. He is CLEARLY out to impress. | 0:29:22 | 0:29:26
I'm not used to upholstering 1970s poufs in leatherette. | 0:29:30 | 0:29:34
It's going to be a rush. | 0:29:34 | 0:29:37
Sarah has decided to keep things simple, | 0:29:38 | 0:29:40
giving her pouf a face-lift and fitting wheels from her trolley. | 0:29:40 | 0:29:44
I'm actually not that impressed by Sarah's idea, | 0:29:44 | 0:29:46
she's sticking wheels on a pouf and upholstering it in leather. | 0:29:46 | 0:29:49
I was expecting something far more creative | 0:29:49 | 0:29:52
and left-field thinking from her. | 0:29:52 | 0:29:54
F, F, F, F, F, F, F. | 0:29:54 | 0:29:57
Jamie's cushion might be finished, | 0:29:58 | 0:30:00
but his inexperience is once more showing through. | 0:30:00 | 0:30:03
-Johnny... -Yeah? -I know you're a builder, | 0:30:03 | 0:30:06
-how would you stick that cushion to the back of that? -How would I? -Yeah. | 0:30:06 | 0:30:10
-What, to the underside of the lid there? -Yeah. | 0:30:10 | 0:30:13
I don't really know, to tell you the truth. | 0:30:13 | 0:30:16
I mean, you'd need to, I think, sew it in, somehow, I think. | 0:30:16 | 0:30:19
I don't think I've hand-sewn anything in my life. | 0:30:22 | 0:30:26
Haven't. | 0:30:26 | 0:30:28
Her pouf upholstered, | 0:30:28 | 0:30:29
the usually-confident Sarah is doubting herself. | 0:30:29 | 0:30:33
God, it's knowing when to stop, isn't it? | 0:30:33 | 0:30:35
Cos that's actually | 0:30:35 | 0:30:38
really cute. | 0:30:38 | 0:30:39
Maybe I will just do another leather detail around it. | 0:30:42 | 0:30:46
Almost so it is bowed, that is what I'm going to do, that's clever. | 0:30:48 | 0:30:54
Jamie is painting his scaffolding seat pink but the time is ticking | 0:30:54 | 0:30:59
away fast and both designers are beginning to feel the strain. | 0:30:59 | 0:31:03
Go under! | 0:31:03 | 0:31:04
HE YELLS IN FRUSTRATION | 0:31:06 | 0:31:07
This is cutting it really fine. | 0:31:08 | 0:31:10
I am done. | 0:31:19 | 0:31:20
How well they've done transforming their junk is an important part | 0:31:22 | 0:31:26
of determining who will win a place in the quarterfinal | 0:31:26 | 0:31:29
and at least one of the designers is worried. | 0:31:29 | 0:31:31
It just looks the same as what it was - a heap of junk. | 0:31:32 | 0:31:36
I'm stoked, I think it looks brilliant. | 0:31:36 | 0:31:39
It looks so cute, it looks like a cake. | 0:31:39 | 0:31:42
The judges will let the paint dry before deciding which product | 0:31:42 | 0:31:45
is best later on. | 0:31:45 | 0:31:46
Meanwhile, work hasn't stopped in the rooms. | 0:31:52 | 0:31:55
In Sarah's contemporary scheme, the yellow and putty paint job is | 0:31:55 | 0:31:57
finished but she's pushing her team, varnishing the ambitious wardrobe. | 0:31:57 | 0:32:03
-HE SINGS: -Happy, happy, joy, joy, happy, happy, joy, joy. | 0:32:03 | 0:32:07
-I love painting... -HE LAUGHS | 0:32:07 | 0:32:09
With her new-found passion for upholstery, | 0:32:10 | 0:32:13
Sarah is covering a chair she bought for just £12 from a car-boot sale. | 0:32:13 | 0:32:18
I should have cut this before I sewed it but I was distracted. | 0:32:18 | 0:32:24
It is not finished yet, but when it is finished, I think it will rock. | 0:32:24 | 0:32:28
Jamie's room is rocking along, too. | 0:32:32 | 0:32:34
The wardrobe carcass is in and his statement headboard is half built. | 0:32:34 | 0:32:39
Meanwhile, he's trying out a new skill. | 0:32:39 | 0:32:41
Block printing fabric with bleach and paint for another cushion cover. | 0:32:41 | 0:32:45
So all I've got is a wooden block, | 0:32:46 | 0:32:48
so I am literally going to roll a small amount of bleach onto that, | 0:32:48 | 0:32:51
print it and then you can't see the effect straightaway | 0:32:51 | 0:32:55
cos obviously it just takes the colour straight out. | 0:32:55 | 0:32:57
I'll have to buy Chrissie some bleach. | 0:32:57 | 0:32:59
-INTERVIEWER: Where have you got that from? -The toilet. | 0:33:01 | 0:33:05
It is a cost-effective way of creating pattern on the cheap. | 0:33:05 | 0:33:08
Now, he just needs to sew it up. | 0:33:08 | 0:33:12
HE LAUGHS | 0:33:16 | 0:33:18
I've sewn it the wrong way. | 0:33:20 | 0:33:21
It is a quick unpick and take two. | 0:33:21 | 0:33:24
Right. And then now, I can cut all this excess fabric off, | 0:33:25 | 0:33:28
turn it inside out and it will be a cushion cover. | 0:33:28 | 0:33:31
It's worked out perfect. | 0:33:34 | 0:33:36
I hear you've been trying out a new skill with some bleaching | 0:33:38 | 0:33:41
and some blocks, is that right? | 0:33:41 | 0:33:42
Yeah, it is the first time I've ever done it, | 0:33:42 | 0:33:44
but researching into different cultures, how they print fabrics, | 0:33:44 | 0:33:48
I found a really cool printing block which links in with clothing | 0:33:48 | 0:33:50
that she has got in the room and fabrics | 0:33:50 | 0:33:52
and I wanted to try it out and it has worked out really well. | 0:33:52 | 0:33:55
You have been loading the room with colour | 0:33:55 | 0:33:57
and each round, you have been getting bolder | 0:33:57 | 0:33:59
and bolder with your use of pattern and colour. | 0:33:59 | 0:34:01
Where's that come from? | 0:34:01 | 0:34:02
Erm, I don't know, it is kind of scary, especially this one, | 0:34:02 | 0:34:06
kind of bold, vibrant, putting mad colours together | 0:34:06 | 0:34:09
and grouping them together, | 0:34:09 | 0:34:10
making sure they work and not kind of just clash. | 0:34:10 | 0:34:13
Clever, very clever. | 0:34:13 | 0:34:14
Sarah is being rather clever, too, | 0:34:16 | 0:34:18
making handles for her wardrobe from a leather belt and industrial bolts. | 0:34:18 | 0:34:23
I wanted to do something quite masculine and industrial | 0:34:23 | 0:34:26
so it was a perfect solution and these are brilliant, | 0:34:26 | 0:34:30
brilliant bolts and I think that whole thing cost me about 50p. | 0:34:30 | 0:34:35
Upstairs, her uber-modern yellow and putty paint job is finished | 0:34:37 | 0:34:41
but it has been a concern for homeowner Lynne since day one. | 0:34:41 | 0:34:45
I am worried. I'm worried that I may have been too bold with asking for | 0:34:45 | 0:34:50
bright yellow and bright colours and maybe it is a little bit too bright. | 0:34:50 | 0:34:55
If she's still unhappy now the putty has gone up, too, | 0:34:55 | 0:34:58
Sarah might have to rethink and repaint. | 0:34:58 | 0:35:01
I am worried. It's one of my main concerns, always, | 0:35:02 | 0:35:05
that the homeowner loves it. | 0:35:05 | 0:35:06
I don't want to do something that they are really going to hate | 0:35:06 | 0:35:09
and is going to cause lots of upset, it's their home. | 0:35:09 | 0:35:12
-Whoo! -Hello. -Hello. | 0:35:12 | 0:35:15
Hey, I like it, I like-I like the putty colour. | 0:35:17 | 0:35:20
SARAH LAUGHS NERVOUSLY | 0:35:20 | 0:35:22
-I didn't think... -That's what I was hoping to hear. | 0:35:22 | 0:35:24
-I really didn't think I would and I love you breaking up that. -Yeah. | 0:35:24 | 0:35:28
That is really cool, actually. | 0:35:28 | 0:35:30
Encouraged, Sarah gets carried away. | 0:35:30 | 0:35:33
And when it is dressed, you will see all the areas and how they all work. | 0:35:33 | 0:35:37
This is really simple which means that we can go a bit more bonkers | 0:35:37 | 0:35:40
on the other side. | 0:35:40 | 0:35:41
"A bit more bonkers", | 0:35:41 | 0:35:43
that is a bit worrying. | 0:35:43 | 0:35:44
With her homeowner's fears allayed, more or less, Sarah makes a start on | 0:35:46 | 0:35:50
her magnetic tape which she bought off the internet for around £20. | 0:35:50 | 0:35:54
But laid-back Sarah is coming a bit unstuck. | 0:35:54 | 0:35:59
Oh. | 0:35:59 | 0:36:00 | |
Whoopsie. | 0:36:00 | 0:36:01
What are all those crazy shapes about? | 0:36:03 | 0:36:05
It feels like you are being yanked - your eye - from one side | 0:36:05 | 0:36:07
to the next, to the next, to the next, to the next | 0:36:07 | 0:36:10
-cos it's quite like... -HE MAKES EXPLODING NOISES | 0:36:10 | 0:36:12
Yanked? | 0:36:12 | 0:36:14
Was yanking not what you wanted? | 0:36:14 | 0:36:16
No, I wanted a smooth flow around the room, | 0:36:16 | 0:36:18
I wanted to connect each part of the room together by using that line. | 0:36:18 | 0:36:23
So, it works, obviously, but maybe faster than I appreciated. | 0:36:23 | 0:36:28
Jamie is working pretty fast, too. | 0:36:29 | 0:36:31
His distressed pink scaffolding boards are finally ready | 0:36:31 | 0:36:34
to be attached to the bedhead... | 0:36:34 | 0:36:36
That's looking good. | 0:36:36 | 0:36:37
..and he's growing ever more confident with his colour scheme. | 0:36:37 | 0:36:41
It's a great set of colour that I think I have chosen | 0:36:41 | 0:36:44
and Betty seems to like them so I have got something right. | 0:36:44 | 0:36:49
Now Jamie's got colour on the walls, I have to admit, | 0:36:49 | 0:36:51
it's looking rather good and I am surprised to say that | 0:36:51 | 0:36:53
cos there's actually five bold colours all in one small room. | 0:36:53 | 0:36:58
He doesn't understand the theory behind why they work. | 0:36:58 | 0:37:00
I think it's cos they're all tonally similar. | 0:37:00 | 0:37:02
He's been quite intuitive, | 0:37:02 | 0:37:05
but it has paid off. | 0:37:05 | 0:37:06
With his confidence on the up, | 0:37:06 | 0:37:08
Jamie decides to get a sneaky peek of the competition. | 0:37:08 | 0:37:12
What's that you're you sticking up - magnet? | 0:37:12 | 0:37:14
-This is magnet tape. -Cool. Are you having things hanging off it? | 0:37:14 | 0:37:18
I've got some magnets to go on it. | 0:37:18 | 0:37:21
That's so cool and I love how it's black in there. | 0:37:21 | 0:37:23
Yeah, it needed some black. Grrr. | 0:37:23 | 0:37:26
-Manly. -It is the stressful part now. | 0:37:26 | 0:37:29
Well, for me it is. Looks like you're nearly finished. | 0:37:29 | 0:37:31
I'm doing all right, it is my poor builder I am worried about, | 0:37:31 | 0:37:36
-who's on the point of exhaustion. -JAMIE LAUGHS | 0:37:36 | 0:37:39
Oh, It looks amazing. | 0:37:39 | 0:37:42
It's somewhere that I would want to have as a bedroom and... | 0:37:42 | 0:37:46
Yeah, I'm scared now. | 0:37:46 | 0:37:48
Sarah's room has rattled Jamie but both amateurs are aiming high with | 0:37:50 | 0:37:54
their designs, an ethos shared by the architect of this development. | 0:37:54 | 0:37:59
The 1960s were the era of the tower block and the skyscraper | 0:37:59 | 0:38:04
and these homes do have a touch of the high-rise about them, | 0:38:04 | 0:38:07
but here, it is mostly about trying to maximise | 0:38:07 | 0:38:09
the space inside on a very, very tight spot | 0:38:09 | 0:38:13
and giving great views from the top, over the river, | 0:38:13 | 0:38:15
both, great selling points to those aspiring buyers, | 0:38:15 | 0:38:18
hoping to better themselves in this age of upward social mobility. | 0:38:18 | 0:38:22
Back in 1967, these properties sold for £17,000 a pop, | 0:38:24 | 0:38:29
far from small fry at the time, | 0:38:29 | 0:38:31
but, at least, thrown in at that price was a mooring for every house. | 0:38:31 | 0:38:35
When they were built, the vision behind developments like these - | 0:38:35 | 0:38:38
exclusive ones - was to give families a high standard of living, | 0:38:38 | 0:38:41
an easy life, but also to foster a sense of community | 0:38:41 | 0:38:44
so communal gardens like these were provided, | 0:38:44 | 0:38:47
very typical of the era, but also reflecting | 0:38:47 | 0:38:49
the belief at the time that young families might have wanted | 0:38:49 | 0:38:52
big gardens but they no longer had the time to look after them. | 0:38:52 | 0:38:55
Time isn't in abundance for our designers either | 0:39:02 | 0:39:05
but Sarah is powering on with new light fittings. | 0:39:05 | 0:39:08
This is going to come from that ceiling fitting up there and then | 0:39:08 | 0:39:11
the cable is going to come down the wall and fit to the wall down there. | 0:39:11 | 0:39:16
She's designed a tropical leaf shape and had it cut out in Perspex. | 0:39:16 | 0:39:20
With the help of a suitable shop-bought fitting, | 0:39:20 | 0:39:23
Sarah has created a bespoke light for £30. | 0:39:23 | 0:39:26
Fabulous. | 0:39:27 | 0:39:28
-It's nearly the end of day two. -Things are coming together. | 0:39:34 | 0:39:37
The wardrobe has now been painted. It's had two coats on the main side. | 0:39:37 | 0:39:40
I just want to get the door sorted now, | 0:39:40 | 0:39:42
so they can put straight on tomorrow | 0:39:42 | 0:39:44
and I need to finish the textured cushion | 0:39:44 | 0:39:46
and other than that, I think we... | 0:39:46 | 0:39:49
It is going good. | 0:39:49 | 0:39:50
A quarterfinal place is at stake and both amateurs want to be there. | 0:39:50 | 0:39:54
I'm tired but I'm relieved and I am happy. | 0:39:56 | 0:39:59
I'm really enjoying it now, I don't want to go home. | 0:39:59 | 0:40:02
Well, I want to go home, but I don't want to go HOME, home. | 0:40:02 | 0:40:06
-JAMIE: -Who knows what's going to happen tomorrow? | 0:40:06 | 0:40:09
Either way I'm going to be excited, | 0:40:09 | 0:40:11
but, obviously, I'd prefer me to get through. | 0:40:11 | 0:40:13
But, yeah, just wait and see. | 0:40:13 | 0:40:15
Whatever happens happens for a reason. | 0:40:15 | 0:40:18
It's the start of day three, | 0:40:29 | 0:40:31
and our two amateurs can't afford to let up for a moment | 0:40:31 | 0:40:34
if they want to win a place in the quarterfinals. | 0:40:34 | 0:40:37
Morning! | 0:40:37 | 0:40:38
I've woken up this morning a little bit bleary, but... | 0:40:38 | 0:40:42
I'm going to kill it today. | 0:40:43 | 0:40:45
SHE LAUGHS | 0:40:45 | 0:40:46
-JAMIE: -I think now, getting through to this stage, | 0:40:46 | 0:40:49
I'm believing in myself more, | 0:40:49 | 0:40:50
and believing that I could win this competition. | 0:40:50 | 0:40:52
At the end of the day, Sophie and Daniel will scrutinise | 0:40:52 | 0:40:55
the rooms for creativity, quality of finish | 0:40:55 | 0:40:58
and how well the brief is met | 0:40:58 | 0:41:00
to decide who will stay and who will go. | 0:41:00 | 0:41:03
We're so close to the quarterfinals, | 0:41:03 | 0:41:05
and I really do want to get there to show kind of more skills | 0:41:05 | 0:41:09
and more design ideas that I have. | 0:41:09 | 0:41:11
I'm super planned, | 0:41:11 | 0:41:13
super organised, | 0:41:13 | 0:41:14
super Sarah. | 0:41:14 | 0:41:16
In Sarah's room, the ambitious wardrobe is nearly done, | 0:41:22 | 0:41:25
but she's got yet more work for her builder - her bedside table. | 0:41:25 | 0:41:29
It's got a shelf going across it. Supposed to be at this level, | 0:41:29 | 0:41:32
but I think I'd quite like to bring that one a bit higher. | 0:41:32 | 0:41:34
-And then that's all done and you can just... -OK, so I do that next? | 0:41:34 | 0:41:37
-Yes, I think so. -And then, do the door, yeah? -Yeah. | 0:41:37 | 0:41:40
Meanwhile, Sarah's having another sticky moment with magnetic tape. | 0:41:42 | 0:41:46
Never use adhesive magnetic tape again. | 0:41:46 | 0:41:48
SHE LAUGHS | 0:41:48 | 0:41:50
Now, Sarah - there's a lot of faffing going in on in that room. | 0:41:51 | 0:41:54
Well, she's still got quite a lot of the build to do. There are bedside tables to make. | 0:41:54 | 0:41:58
What it is is a very, very ambitious project. | 0:41:58 | 0:42:00
Well, you wanted her to become more contemporary. Do you think she's gone a bit too far? | 0:42:00 | 0:42:04
She could never go too far for contemporary with me. | 0:42:04 | 0:42:06
I just LOVE it. | 0:42:06 | 0:42:08
Jamie has got his work cut out for him - | 0:42:08 | 0:42:10
quite literally, as once again, he's stencilling. | 0:42:10 | 0:42:13
I actually hate stencilling. | 0:42:15 | 0:42:16
It's just an easy way to add pattern to something. | 0:42:16 | 0:42:19
It's not something I would use personally, | 0:42:19 | 0:42:21
but I think it just works within the scheme that I've been doing. | 0:42:21 | 0:42:25
If I get through, I'm not going to use it again. | 0:42:25 | 0:42:28
HE LAUGHS | 0:42:28 | 0:42:29
Extra storage was on the brief, and he knows | 0:42:29 | 0:42:32
he needs to prove to the judges he can nail the spatial planning. | 0:42:32 | 0:42:36
-Well, that's where the door's going to come to. About there. -Yeah. | 0:42:36 | 0:42:40
-Yeah, that'll be fine. -Yeah? | 0:42:40 | 0:42:42
-Maybe along a little few centimetres. -That way, yeah? | 0:42:44 | 0:42:47
Now, you've had misgivings about Jamie, | 0:42:49 | 0:42:51
about the practicality of his designs | 0:42:51 | 0:42:53
and the functionality of them. Is he solving them this time? | 0:42:53 | 0:42:55
He's having a really good stab at it. | 0:42:55 | 0:42:57
He's got an absolutely massive wardrobe in the corner of the room. | 0:42:57 | 0:43:00
The headboard's in there now which is going to add extra storage, too. | 0:43:00 | 0:43:03
So, I think he is answering the brief. | 0:43:03 | 0:43:05
We're yet to see it all come together, | 0:43:05 | 0:43:07
and I think with creating this look, | 0:43:07 | 0:43:09
it is so in the dressing and the accessories, | 0:43:09 | 0:43:12
so that's what I'm holding out for. | 0:43:12 | 0:43:14
Dressing these attic rooms is easier said than done, though. | 0:43:14 | 0:43:18
Have you ever tried moving a mattress yourself? | 0:43:18 | 0:43:20
Why are there so many stairs? | 0:43:28 | 0:43:30
The designers' three-day challenge is almost over. | 0:43:36 | 0:43:39
Oh, that's lovely. | 0:43:39 | 0:43:41
Sarah started strongly, | 0:43:41 | 0:43:42
as she was deemed the best when it came to presenting her ideas. | 0:43:42 | 0:43:46
Now, Sophie and Daniel must decide who coped best under pressure | 0:43:46 | 0:43:50
designing something out of a load of old junk. | 0:43:50 | 0:43:53
There is nothing more I could have done in 90 minutes. | 0:43:53 | 0:43:56
It's well made, it's really well upcycled, | 0:43:56 | 0:43:59
it's cool. | 0:43:59 | 0:44:01
I'd have that in my house any day of the week. | 0:44:01 | 0:44:03
It's amazing to think that I could get to the quarterfinals. | 0:44:03 | 0:44:07
A win here could secure Jamie his place. | 0:44:07 | 0:44:10
So, judges, what a challenge. | 0:44:10 | 0:44:12
Making silk purses out of sow's ears - I don't fancy it myself. | 0:44:12 | 0:44:14
This is Sarah's. She hasn't actually done a lot - | 0:44:14 | 0:44:17
she's just sort of put a strap of leatherette around a vintage pouffe | 0:44:17 | 0:44:19
and some hostess trolley wheels on the bottom. | 0:44:19 | 0:44:21
-But it's all about the simplicity. -Oh, is it? -Yes. | 0:44:21 | 0:44:24
I could see you in a pair of Capri pants sitting on that, | 0:44:24 | 0:44:26
-looking very chic. -OK, well, let's try that, shall we? | 0:44:26 | 0:44:29
-Whooa! -Whoo! | 0:44:29 | 0:44:30
-OK! -It's nice to look at, but it's not very useful. | 0:44:30 | 0:44:33
What about Jamie's? Let's look at Jamie's. | 0:44:33 | 0:44:35
Well, I had high hopes for this, | 0:44:35 | 0:44:37
-because this is a multifunctional piece of furniture. -Oh, really? | 0:44:37 | 0:44:40
He is trying to offer storage, a seat... | 0:44:40 | 0:44:42
This is trying too hard. | 0:44:42 | 0:44:44
Oh, I like his ambition. | 0:44:44 | 0:44:46
Do the Sophie test. | 0:44:46 | 0:44:47
-Well, I'm not falling over, so it's more practical than that. -So, you can sit on it. | 0:44:47 | 0:44:51
-But I'm not going to lean back. -I've got to be behind it. | 0:44:51 | 0:44:53
-It's not beautiful, and it's almost useful. -Mm. | 0:44:53 | 0:44:57
Come on, Sophie, you're not going to have that in your own home. | 0:44:57 | 0:45:00
The judges are divided, | 0:45:00 | 0:45:02
but they have to come to a unanimous decision. | 0:45:02 | 0:45:05
So, out of the pair of them, who's won? | 0:45:06 | 0:45:08
-This is the best product design, isn't it, overall? -I'm with you. | 0:45:08 | 0:45:11
-Think it's probably going to be Sarah. -I think Sarah, too. | 0:45:11 | 0:45:14
Sarah won, but it was a close-run thing, | 0:45:15 | 0:45:17
and quite frankly, neither of them impressed us that much. | 0:45:17 | 0:45:20
It'll come down to the all-important room reveals, | 0:45:21 | 0:45:24
and Sarah's time is almost up. | 0:45:24 | 0:45:27
Doesn't matter how organised you are, | 0:45:28 | 0:45:30
it's always rushed to the end. | 0:45:30 | 0:45:32
She's spent her £1,000 budget | 0:45:33 | 0:45:35
delivering a masculine, minimal look... | 0:45:35 | 0:45:38
Perfect. | 0:45:38 | 0:45:40
..for Jay, who's away travelling. | 0:45:40 | 0:45:42
Little nod to the travel. | 0:45:42 | 0:45:45
After clashing with his mum Lynn over colour choices, | 0:45:45 | 0:45:48
will the final look win her a place in the quarterfinal? | 0:45:48 | 0:45:51
That's me done. | 0:45:52 | 0:45:54
Went really well. | 0:45:57 | 0:45:58
Went REALLY well, actually. | 0:45:58 | 0:46:00
I love it. | 0:46:00 | 0:46:02
Sarah's brief was to create a cool, contemporary, masculine retreat. | 0:46:04 | 0:46:08
Three days ago, the room was bland and boyish. | 0:46:10 | 0:46:12
Now Sarah has created a minimal, modern bachelor pad. | 0:46:17 | 0:46:20
In her bid for contemporary, she's zoned the room | 0:46:21 | 0:46:24
with layered shades of yellow and putty, | 0:46:24 | 0:46:26
uniting them with a magnetic graphic line. | 0:46:26 | 0:46:29
She's designed a desk and storage unit, | 0:46:31 | 0:46:33
and created a seating area with an upcycled chair. | 0:46:33 | 0:46:36
She has completed the look with handmade ethnic cushions, | 0:46:38 | 0:46:42
and a bespoke tropical plant light. | 0:46:42 | 0:46:45
Think I've nailed the brief. | 0:46:45 | 0:46:47
It's cool. | 0:46:47 | 0:46:48
-Pretty amazing transformation. -They asked for impact... | 0:46:54 | 0:46:58
-And you have it here. -Yes! -Wow. -In buckets, actually. | 0:46:58 | 0:47:02
Is this fulfilling your angle quota? Cos they are everywhere in here. | 0:47:02 | 0:47:05
-Yeah, this is right up my boulevard, as they say. -THEY LAUGH | 0:47:05 | 0:47:09
Because it's really clever and it's really unexpected, | 0:47:09 | 0:47:11
and the angles are actually not just there for decoration, | 0:47:11 | 0:47:14
-they're cleverly zoning this space. -Exactly. | 0:47:14 | 0:47:17
What they're doing is creating an atmosphere over the bed | 0:47:17 | 0:47:20
that's warming it up here, | 0:47:20 | 0:47:22
and also the little seating area that we've got in the corner. | 0:47:22 | 0:47:25
And at the same time, those lines are making your eyes move around | 0:47:25 | 0:47:29
the room and are fighting against the apex of the roof really nicely. | 0:47:29 | 0:47:32
-But look, this is a bedroom. -Mm-hm. -It's somewhere to come and relax. | 0:47:32 | 0:47:36
-Jump in. -Can I jump in? -Yeah, why not? | 0:47:36 | 0:47:38
-Ooh. I like it. -It's pretty jazzy. | 0:47:39 | 0:47:41
-SHE LAUGHS -Oh, you like it. | 0:47:41 | 0:47:43
I like the perspective. | 0:47:43 | 0:47:45
OK, but look this way, and I'm just seeing sort of black lines | 0:47:45 | 0:47:47
and yellow blocks streaking everywhere. | 0:47:47 | 0:47:51
It needs softening off. | 0:47:51 | 0:47:53
I mean, my criticism is, maybe this is over-stylised. | 0:47:53 | 0:47:56
I know. But you can never be over-stylised. | 0:47:56 | 0:47:59
THEY LAUGH | 0:47:59 | 0:48:00
Important to the judges' decision is what the client thinks of the room. | 0:48:00 | 0:48:05
You're always a bit trepidatious. | 0:48:05 | 0:48:06
Not entirely sure what they're going to think of it. | 0:48:06 | 0:48:10
Jay's mum and dad will give their verdict. | 0:48:10 | 0:48:13
-Ooh, wow. Gosh. -Oh, my word. | 0:48:13 | 0:48:16
Wow, look at this. | 0:48:16 | 0:48:17
-Oh, I love it. It's so minimal! -THEY LAUGH | 0:48:17 | 0:48:20
-You like the minimal look? -Yeah, I do. -Fantastic. | 0:48:20 | 0:48:22
It was so cluttered before, | 0:48:22 | 0:48:24
but looks really cool now, doesn't it? | 0:48:24 | 0:48:27
-Great room. I think we should move in. -HE LAUGHS | 0:48:27 | 0:48:30
It's too cool for us. Far too cool for us. | 0:48:30 | 0:48:33
And what do you think Jay will think? | 0:48:33 | 0:48:36
He will love it. He really will love it. | 0:48:36 | 0:48:38
I don't know what else to say. I'm wonderfully impressed. | 0:48:38 | 0:48:41
Seriously, I really am, though. | 0:48:41 | 0:48:43
THEY LAUGH | 0:48:43 | 0:48:45
With his deadline fast approaching, | 0:48:45 | 0:48:47
Jamie has got a lot of dressing to do. | 0:48:47 | 0:48:50
I'm absolutely sweating. | 0:48:50 | 0:48:52
Having spent more than half his budget on accessories... | 0:48:52 | 0:48:55
The big dreamcatcher, which I don't know where it's... Ah. | 0:48:55 | 0:48:58
Where's it gone? | 0:48:58 | 0:48:59
He's relying on these finishing touches to create | 0:48:59 | 0:49:02
the hippy-chic vibe. | 0:49:02 | 0:49:04
She'll be sweating when she gets into bed. | 0:49:04 | 0:49:06
There's, like, a million throws on it. | 0:49:06 | 0:49:08
His client's mum, Chrissie, had serious reservations | 0:49:08 | 0:49:11
about the richness of the scheme, so he must make sure | 0:49:11 | 0:49:14
the overall look is spot-on if he's to become a quarterfinalist. | 0:49:14 | 0:49:19
It's like cushion overload, isn't it? | 0:49:19 | 0:49:21
HE LAUGHS | 0:49:21 | 0:49:22
Craziness. | 0:49:22 | 0:49:23
OK, I'm finished. | 0:49:26 | 0:49:28
I'm loving the room, and it's absolutely incredible. | 0:49:38 | 0:49:41
It's got quite a kind of cool vibe with it, | 0:49:41 | 0:49:45
which is kind of what I wanted to bring. | 0:49:45 | 0:49:47
Jamie's brief was to create a colourful, hippy chic bedroom. | 0:49:48 | 0:49:51
Three days ago, the room had plenty of colour, but bordered on garish. | 0:49:51 | 0:49:55
Now Jamie's created an Indian-sari inspired scheme, | 0:49:59 | 0:50:03
contrasting orange, teal, pink and green. | 0:50:03 | 0:50:06
He's added a wardrobe built into the eaves | 0:50:07 | 0:50:10
and further storage in the headboard. | 0:50:10 | 0:50:12
And in his bid for hippy, | 0:50:12 | 0:50:14
he's made a beanbag and cushions, | 0:50:14 | 0:50:17
while creating further mood with shop-bought items - | 0:50:17 | 0:50:21
throws, wall hangings, dreamcatchers and a Moroccan lamp. | 0:50:21 | 0:50:25
I'm always quite excited for the judging, | 0:50:25 | 0:50:27
no matter whether it's negative or positive, | 0:50:27 | 0:50:29
cos that's where you need to learn and kind of progress as a designer. | 0:50:29 | 0:50:32
Oh, fantastic! | 0:50:34 | 0:50:36
I was not expecting this. | 0:50:37 | 0:50:39
He's got the mood and the lighting absolutely spot on. | 0:50:39 | 0:50:43
-Well, I'm thinking I'm in Jaipur, not Marlow. -SOPHIE LAUGHS | 0:50:43 | 0:50:46
I want to go and have a look at the cupboard. | 0:50:46 | 0:50:48
-I mean, it looks big enough for a small family to live in here. -Yeah. | 0:50:48 | 0:50:51
Oh, yes! | 0:50:52 | 0:50:54
So that works, from a practical point of view, | 0:50:54 | 0:50:56
-but it is just a bit of a box. -Because he's painted it the bright colour, which works | 0:50:56 | 0:51:00
with the whole scheme of things, but it draws your eyes to the weakest point in the room. | 0:51:00 | 0:51:04
When, in fact, the bed head should be the centre of attention. | 0:51:04 | 0:51:07
Yeah, that does look pretty cool, doesn't it? | 0:51:07 | 0:51:10
Got loads of storage down here, and that is jolly useful. | 0:51:10 | 0:51:13
So, a really multifunctional piece, that. | 0:51:13 | 0:51:16
Now, there is something about pinning tie-dye bedspreads | 0:51:16 | 0:51:20
to the ceiling that I just cannot allow. | 0:51:20 | 0:51:23
That is so wrong. It's such a dated thing. | 0:51:23 | 0:51:25
I mean, it's up there with, like, paper-ball lampshades and posters of Bob Marley. | 0:51:25 | 0:51:29
Yeah, but this is the brief. | 0:51:29 | 0:51:31
This is what this young lady wants to have in her room. | 0:51:31 | 0:51:34
The end result is kind of better than I thought it was going to be, | 0:51:35 | 0:51:39
so I'm just excited to see the homeowner's reactions now. | 0:51:39 | 0:51:42
-Quite a transformation. -Oh, my gosh. | 0:51:46 | 0:51:49
Stunning. | 0:51:50 | 0:51:51
It's stunning. | 0:51:51 | 0:51:53
He's done so well. | 0:51:53 | 0:51:55
Oh, I feel like I'm going to cry. | 0:51:55 | 0:51:56
He's done so well. It just doesn't look like the same room. | 0:51:56 | 0:51:59
-Why do you feel like you're going to cry? -I think I was just so worried. I was thinking, | 0:51:59 | 0:52:03
he's such a nice chap and I would hate it if I walk in and think, | 0:52:03 | 0:52:06
"This is awful." It's just lovely. | 0:52:06 | 0:52:08
Will daughter Betty love it as much? | 0:52:09 | 0:52:11
Oh, my God. | 0:52:12 | 0:52:13
Oh, my God, this is amazing! | 0:52:14 | 0:52:17
My God. | 0:52:17 | 0:52:18
It literally looks like a completely different room. | 0:52:20 | 0:52:23
With both rooms scrutinised, | 0:52:29 | 0:52:31
Sarah and Jamie can do no more. | 0:52:31 | 0:52:33
-Well done. -I'm happy. | 0:52:33 | 0:52:35
-Happy, happy? -Really happy. I love it. | 0:52:36 | 0:52:40
They've grown close throughout the competition, | 0:52:41 | 0:52:44
but now only one can make it through. | 0:52:44 | 0:52:47
I can feel myself changing as a person, | 0:52:47 | 0:52:49
and becoming me, I suppose, and more confident in my designs. | 0:52:49 | 0:52:52
So, getting through to the final | 0:52:52 | 0:52:54
and maybe winning it would be life-changing. | 0:52:54 | 0:52:57
-It was good. -Yeah, it is good. | 0:52:57 | 0:53:00
I'll walk away a winner no matter what. | 0:53:00 | 0:53:03
And Jamie, I'll champion him | 0:53:03 | 0:53:05
the whole way if he gets through. | 0:53:05 | 0:53:07
But, yeah, I do want to win. | 0:53:07 | 0:53:09
So, judges, a third round. | 0:53:12 | 0:53:14
You are going to pick a quarterfinalist, | 0:53:14 | 0:53:16
so the stakes are pretty high, I guess. | 0:53:16 | 0:53:18
Yeah, so we've got to be very careful who we choose. | 0:53:18 | 0:53:21
Which of the two do you think are pulling forward? | 0:53:21 | 0:53:23
They're both incredibly strong. | 0:53:23 | 0:53:25
We wanted to see Sarah do something more contemporary, | 0:53:25 | 0:53:28
a bit more modern - she totally has proved | 0:53:28 | 0:53:30
that she can be versatile. | 0:53:30 | 0:53:32
-It's quite an incredible scheme, isn't it? -I loved it. | 0:53:32 | 0:53:35
You know that I can't hide that at all. I find it very exciting. | 0:53:35 | 0:53:38
Because it was intelligent design. | 0:53:38 | 0:53:39
One area where I'm not sure she's progressing | 0:53:39 | 0:53:42
quite so well is with her colour selections. | 0:53:42 | 0:53:44
You know, her first project, she got those greens SO wrong. | 0:53:44 | 0:53:47
And with this project, I feel that that very acidic yellow | 0:53:47 | 0:53:51
wasn't the right choice for a bedroom. | 0:53:51 | 0:53:53
It's not restful at all, really. | 0:53:53 | 0:53:54
How do you think she coped with designing for a client she had never met? | 0:53:54 | 0:53:57
I think she had a difficult balance, actually, | 0:53:57 | 0:53:59
because she's also designing for the parents. | 0:53:59 | 0:54:02
They're the guys who are here approving this brief, | 0:54:02 | 0:54:04
and they've got a very particular sense of style | 0:54:04 | 0:54:06
and aesthetic in their own home, too, | 0:54:06 | 0:54:08
which is very clean, very minimal. | 0:54:08 | 0:54:10
-What did they think? -They really, really adored it. -Good for them. | 0:54:10 | 0:54:13
And they thought that their son would love it, as well, | 0:54:13 | 0:54:16
and they couldn't really wait to get him into the room. | 0:54:16 | 0:54:19
-Oh, wow. -If he wasn't, you know, travelling around the world. | 0:54:19 | 0:54:21
Jamie was asked for something that was almost kind of bohemian. | 0:54:21 | 0:54:24
When I walked in there, it was quite a melange of different things. What did you think of it? | 0:54:24 | 0:54:28
Well, I think when you're going to do this look, | 0:54:28 | 0:54:31
you have got to go for it. More is more. | 0:54:31 | 0:54:33
It's a complete kind of maximalist approach, isn't it? | 0:54:33 | 0:54:35
It's maximalist, but you've got to be really careful how you do it, | 0:54:35 | 0:54:38
too, cos it's not RANDOM. | 0:54:38 | 0:54:40
I know that the homeowner had a go at doing this look previously, | 0:54:40 | 0:54:43
and they just hadn't pulled it off at all. But Jamie did. | 0:54:43 | 0:54:46
And what's quite interesting is not only did he pull it off, | 0:54:46 | 0:54:49
but it was completely out of his field, | 0:54:49 | 0:54:51
and I'm really impressed by that. | 0:54:51 | 0:54:52
It seems like on each round he really pushes himself, | 0:54:52 | 0:54:55
grapples with a very tough brief. When you remember Walthamstow, | 0:54:55 | 0:54:58
-we had to put a living room in the kitchen. -Yeah. | 0:54:58 | 0:55:00
He's not had it easy at all, has he? | 0:55:00 | 0:55:02
He's had some killer briefs, I have to admit. | 0:55:02 | 0:55:04
And he's met the challenge every time. | 0:55:04 | 0:55:06
And for someone who's 21, it is outstanding level of confidence. | 0:55:06 | 0:55:10
Well, the homeowner loved it. | 0:55:10 | 0:55:12
Loved the clashing colours and patterns and textures, | 0:55:12 | 0:55:14
and really thought that Jamie had understood her daughter. | 0:55:14 | 0:55:17
Well, it did feel so special in there. | 0:55:17 | 0:55:19
He got the mood just right. | 0:55:19 | 0:55:21
It seems like you've got two really strong designers | 0:55:21 | 0:55:24
who have come on in leaps and bounds over the competition. | 0:55:24 | 0:55:28
Exactly. They're so different from each other, | 0:55:28 | 0:55:30
-and yet, so good, as well. -Yeah, they're both seriously good. | 0:55:30 | 0:55:34
The judges must now decide which designer shows the most potential | 0:55:38 | 0:55:41
and deserves that quarterfinal place. | 0:55:41 | 0:55:44
It's third-round stage, and next, it's the quarterfinals, | 0:55:47 | 0:55:50
so these two are expecting an awful lot of you. | 0:55:50 | 0:55:53
But, by golly, you two delivered this time. | 0:55:53 | 0:55:55
And in really difficult rooms, as well. | 0:55:55 | 0:55:58
I mean, loft rooms are a nightmare. | 0:55:58 | 0:56:00
All those angles, to get a comprehensive scheme | 0:56:00 | 0:56:02
and storage, as well - it's not easy. | 0:56:02 | 0:56:05
But you guys nailed it. | 0:56:05 | 0:56:07
And that's why it's been a tough time for us to make a decision, | 0:56:07 | 0:56:09
because frankly, we think you're both extremely talented. | 0:56:09 | 0:56:13
The designer going through | 0:56:16 | 0:56:19
to the quarterfinals is... | 0:56:19 | 0:56:21
Sarah. | 0:56:28 | 0:56:29
Well done. You won! | 0:56:31 | 0:56:33
That's incredible. | 0:56:33 | 0:56:35
Still on a journey together, | 0:56:35 | 0:56:36
and I want to know all about next time. | 0:56:36 | 0:56:38
-Yeah, you're coming with me. -Yeah, I would. -In spirit. -THEY LAUGH | 0:56:38 | 0:56:42
I am a little bit gutted. | 0:56:42 | 0:56:44
But over the moon that I've got this far in the competition. | 0:56:44 | 0:56:47
Like, three rounds in, | 0:56:47 | 0:56:48
two other amazing designers have gone. | 0:56:48 | 0:56:50
Yeah, it could have been worse - I could have gone the first week. | 0:56:50 | 0:56:53
Oh, my God. | 0:56:53 | 0:56:54
-Do you like it? -Well done! It's bloody beautiful! -Thank you. | 0:56:54 | 0:56:58
-I'm so happy that you like it. -Oh, it's amazing. -I love it. | 0:56:58 | 0:57:01
-I don't know how you've done this. -HE LAUGHS | 0:57:01 | 0:57:04
I am completely heartbroken to have lost Jamie. | 0:57:04 | 0:57:07
He is so talented. | 0:57:07 | 0:57:09
So incredibly competent for somebody who's only 21. | 0:57:09 | 0:57:12
But he does lack just that little bit of maturity. | 0:57:12 | 0:57:15
But I know he's going to get it, and then he'll be a superstar. | 0:57:15 | 0:57:19
It's completely changed my life, and I'm not just going to let it slip out of my hands. | 0:57:19 | 0:57:22
I'm going to take this and kind of run with it, | 0:57:22 | 0:57:25
and hopefully, in a couple of years, be an interior designer. | 0:57:25 | 0:57:28
I'm so excited. | 0:57:30 | 0:57:32
SHE LAUGHS | 0:57:32 | 0:57:34
That was amazing. I feel awesome. | 0:57:34 | 0:57:36
I really wanted to get through this one. | 0:57:36 | 0:57:39
Feel like I'm just getting into my stride. | 0:57:39 | 0:57:41
Quarterfinals! | 0:57:41 | 0:57:43
I was blown away by Sarah's project. | 0:57:43 | 0:57:46
It was totally contemporary, really forward-thinking, | 0:57:46 | 0:57:49
and showed us something we hadn't seen before. And what's more, | 0:57:49 | 0:57:52
it shows that she is versatile, | 0:57:52 | 0:57:54
which is a key ingredient in staying in this competition. | 0:57:54 | 0:57:58
Next time, in four self-build South London homes, | 0:58:03 | 0:58:06
a brand-new set of wannabe designers fight it out... | 0:58:06 | 0:58:10
-I don't think I've ever been this tired. -Perfect. | 0:58:10 | 0:58:13
..for just three places in the next round. | 0:58:13 | 0:58:15
The designer going home is... | 0:58:15 | 0:58:17 |
