Kaffee und Kuchen play a big part in German life.

No matter how old you are and where you come from,

chances are in the afternoon, you'll fancy a nice piece

of Kaesekuchen, cheesecake, for example,

with a large cup of Kaffee mit Sahne, coffee with cream.

Cafe Tambosi in Munich was founded in 1775,

and was once a favourite haunt with the Bavarian royal household.

So, how does the cake taste?

Ausgezeichnet.

Rischart's Backhaus is another popular place for coffee and cake.

It's right in the centre of Munich, and come two o'clock, it gets so busy,

you're lucky to find a seat.

Someone who's devoted all their life to cake making

is Rischart's pastry chef, Peter Kolenda.

Schwarzwaelder Kirschtorte, Black Forest gateau is one of the favourites,

and every day, 200 slices are produced in Rischart's pastry kitchen.

Cafes have an important role in German life.

They're open from noon till late at night,

and are a place to meet friends, take your family for a treat,

or discuss business over a cup of coffee.

The choice of food and drink is vast.

Kaffee und Kuchen is still a favourite,

but you can also order small meals along with a variety of drinks.

The most popular place to drink beer is, of course, the Biergarten,

originally the garden of the brewery.

One of the problems that puzzled medieval brewers

was how to keep their beer cool during the summer months.

To keep the beer from going off,

chestnut trees were planted to shade the cellars.

And what better place for people to drink beer on a hot summer's day

than in the shade of these trees?

In the early days, breweries were not allowed to sell food,

and even today, tradition permits customers to bring their own.

If you want to get away from the crowds, though,

the Englischer Garten is the place to go.

It's an enormous park stretching for five kilometres in the centre of Munich.

Many people treat this park as their front lawn,

and families and friends come here to play, relax or go for a walk.

The Chinesischer Turm, Chinese pagoda,

at the heart of the Englischer Garten

is a popular place for families to meet,

and, of course, for a drink.

CHURCH BELL RINGS

The Fronleichnam procession

is the Catholic celebration of Corpus Christi.

Bavaria has a large Catholic population.

And in every community, church services

and religious processions take place.

Corpus Christi gives Bavarians a chance

to wear their traditional costume.

The village of Seehausen, just south of Munich

celebrates Fronleichnam in a very special way.

This is the only place in Germany

where people take the procession to the water.

THE BAND PLAYS

In the Staffelsee, there are several small islands.

On one of these, a religious settlement developed in 800 AD,

and even now, the villagers see these islands

as their spiritual home.
