Good morning, and a very Happy Christmas to all of you. We here at | :00:30. | :00:34.
St Mary Redcliffe Church in Bristol are delighted but you can all share | :00:34. | :00:39.
were thus in our family worship on this Christmas Day morning. A very | :00:39. | :00:43.
important part of our worship is our Nativity play by our children, | :00:43. | :00:53.
:00:53. | :00:58. | ||
and that's where we are going to God sent an angel called Gabriel to | :00:58. | :01:03.
a young woman who lived in the town of NASA red. She was called Mary | :01:03. | :01:07.
and was engaged to marry a man called Gelson. The Angel Gabriel | :01:08. | :01:13.
said to Mary, peace be with you, carp has blessed you. Mary was very | :01:13. | :01:16.
surprised by this and wondered what the message meant. So the angel | :01:17. | :01:22.
said, don't be afraid, God has been very good to you. You will give | :01:22. | :01:28.
birth to a baby boy and call him Jesus. His kingdom will never end. | :01:28. | :01:32.
Mary was afraid, but she trusted Court and replied to the Angel, | :01:32. | :01:40.
made it happen as Court has chosen. A few months went by. Mary and | :01:40. | :01:43.
Joseph lived in a land that was part of the Roman Empire and had to | :01:43. | :01:48.
return to their home town to be registered. Mary, Joseph and a | :01:48. | :01:53.
donkey travelled from Nazareth to Bethlehem, walking slowly because | :01:53. | :01:58.
Mary's baby was about to be born. When they finally reached Bethlehem | :01:58. | :02:02.
there was nowhere to stay. At every house was full and the only space | :02:02. | :02:06.
they could find to rest was in a stable. With animals around them. | :02:06. | :02:11.
And it was there that Mary gave birth to her baby boy, as Gabriel | :02:11. | :02:17.
had said. She called him Jesus. Now when the hills outside Bethlehem, | :02:17. | :02:21.
shepherds were looking after their sheep through the night. Suddenly | :02:21. | :02:26.
an angel appeared to them and the glory of God shone all around them. | :02:26. | :02:30.
Like Mary, the shepherds were terrified that the angel said, | :02:30. | :02:35.
don't be afraid, I have great news for you and everyone. Today in | :02:35. | :02:40.
Bethlehem the saviour has been born. You will find the baby lying in a | :02:40. | :02:46.
manger. And all the angels praised God and sang, glory to God in the | :02:46. | :02:50.
highest and peace to all upon the earth. The shepherds them said to | :02:50. | :02:55.
one another, let's go to Bethlehem and see the baby for ourselves. So | :02:55. | :03:00.
they went to Mary and Joseph and found baby Jesus lying in a manger, | :03:00. | :03:04.
just as they had heard. They told everyone what had happened and | :03:04. | :03:09.
returned to their flocks, praising God and giving thanks for the birth | :03:09. | :03:19.

through Jesus the Saviour of the world. | :07:42. | :07:50.

The wise men followed the star to find Jesus the King. | :08:51. | :08:56.

We have sinned. | :09:00. | :09:03.
Forgive and heal us. | :09:03. | :09:07.
May God who loved the world so much | :09:07. | :09:10.
that he sent his Son to be our Saviour | :09:10. | :09:14.
forgive you your sins | :09:14. | :09:17.

A reading from the book of the Prophet Isaiah. | :12:41. | :12:46.
How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of the messenger | :12:46. | :12:50.
who announces peace, who brings good news, | :12:50. | :12:53.
who announces salvation, who says to Zion, "Your God reigns." | :12:53. | :12:59.
Listen! Your sentinels lift up their voices, | :12:59. | :13:03.
together they sing for joy, | :13:03. | :13:06.
for in plain sight they see the return of the Lord to Zion. | :13:06. | :13:11.
Break forth together into singing, you ruins of Jerusalem, | :13:11. | :13:16.
for the Lord has comforted his people, | :13:16. | :13:19.
he has redeemed Jerusalem. | :13:20. | :13:23.
The Lord has bared his holy arm before the eyes of all the nations, | :13:23. | :13:28.
and all the ends of the earth shall see the salvation of our God. | :13:28. | :13:34.

Long ago God spoke to our ancestors | :16:20. | :16:24.
in many and various ways by the prophets, | :16:24. | :16:28.
but in these last days he has spoken to us by a Son, | :16:28. | :16:32.
whom he appointed heir of all things, | :16:32. | :16:36.
through whom he also created the worlds. | :16:36. | :16:41.
He is the reflection of God's glory | :16:41. | :16:45.
and the exact imprint of God's very being, | :16:45. | :16:49.
and he sustains all things by his powerful word. | :16:49. | :16:55.
When he had made purification for sins, | :16:55. | :16:58.
he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, | :16:58. | :17:03.
having become as much superior to angels as the name he has inherited | :17:03. | :17:09.
is more excellent than theirs. | :17:09. | :17:13.
For to which of the angels did God ever say, | :17:13. | :17:16.
"You are my Son. Today I have begotten you"? | :17:16. | :17:20.
Or again, "I will be his Father, and he will be my Son"? | :17:20. | :17:27.
And again, when he brings the firstborn into the world, | :17:27. | :17:32.
he says, "Let all God's angels worship him." | :17:32. | :17:36.
Of the angels he says, "He makes his angels winds, | :17:36. | :17:41.
"and his servants flames of fire." | :17:41. | :17:45.
But of the Son he says, "Your throne, O God, is forever and ever, | :17:45. | :17:52.
"and the righteous sceptre is the sceptre of your kingdom. | :17:52. | :17:56.
"You have loved righteousness and hated wickedness, | :17:56. | :18:00.
"therefore God, your God, | :18:00. | :18:02.
"has anointed you with the oil of gladness beyond your companions." | :18:02. | :18:08.
And, "In the beginning, Lord, you founded the earth, | :18:08. | :18:13.
"and the heavens are the work of your hands, | :18:13. | :18:17.
"they will perish, but you remain, | :18:17. | :18:22.
"they will all wear out like clothing, | :18:22. | :18:25.
"like a cloak you will roll them up, | :18:25. | :18:28.
"and like clothing they will be changed. | :18:28. | :18:31.
"But you are the same, and your years will never end." | :18:31. | :18:38.
This is the word of the Lord. | :18:38. | :18:41.

Hear the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. | :19:45. | :19:53.
ALL: Glory to you, O Lord. | :19:54. | :20:02.
In those days a decree went out from Emperor Augustus | :20:02. | :20:06.
that all the world should be registered. | :20:06. | :20:09.
This was the first registration | :20:09. | :20:12.
and was taken while Quirinius was governor of Syria. | :20:12. | :20:16.
All went to their own towns to be registered. | :20:16. | :20:20.
Joseph also went from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, | :20:20. | :20:26.
to the city of David called Bethlehem, | :20:26. | :20:30.
because he was descended from the house and family of David. | :20:30. | :20:35.
He went to be registered with Mary, | :20:35. | :20:39.
to whom he was engaged and who was expecting a child. | :20:39. | :20:43.
While they were there, the time came for her to deliver her child. | :20:43. | :20:48.
And she gave birth to her firstborn son | :20:48. | :20:52.
and wrapped him in bands of cloth, and laid him in a manger, | :20:52. | :20:56.
because there was no place for them in the inn. | :20:56. | :21:01.
In that region there were shepherds living in the fields, | :21:01. | :21:05.
keeping watch over their flock by night. | :21:05. | :21:09.
Then an angel of the Lord stood before them, | :21:09. | :21:12.
and the glory of the Lord shone around them, | :21:12. | :21:16.
and they were terrified. | :21:16. | :21:19.
But the angel said to them, "Do not be afraid, | :21:19. | :21:22.
"for see, I am bringing you good news of great joy | :21:22. | :21:26.
"for all the people - | :21:26. | :21:29.
"to you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, | :21:29. | :21:33.
"who is the Messiah, the Lord. | :21:33. | :21:37.
"This will be a sign for you. | :21:37. | :21:40.
"You will find a child wrapped in bands of cloth | :21:40. | :21:43.
"and lying in a manger." | :21:43. | :21:46.
And suddenly there was with the angel | :21:46. | :21:49.
a multitude of the heavenly host, praising God and saying, | :21:49. | :21:53.
"Glory to God in the highest heaven, | :21:53. | :21:57.
"and on earth peace among those whom he favours!" | :21:57. | :22:03.
When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, | :22:03. | :22:06.
the shepherds said to one another, | :22:06. | :22:09.
"Let us go now to Bethlehem and see this thing that has taken place, | :22:09. | :22:15.
"which the Lord has made known to us." | :22:15. | :22:18.
So they went with haste and found Mary and Joseph, | :22:18. | :22:22.
and the child lying in the manger. | :22:22. | :22:26.
When they saw this, they made known | :22:26. | :22:32.
what had been told them about this child, | :22:32. | :22:34.
and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds told them. | :22:35. | :22:38.
But Mary treasured all these words and pondered them in her heart. | :22:39. | :22:46.
The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God | :22:46. | :22:50.
for all they had heard and seen, as it had been told them. | :22:50. | :22:57.
This is the gospel of the Lord. | :22:57. | :23:02.

Last Christmas, I was standing in my local shop. | :24:09. | :24:13.
The lady in front of me was having a chat with the cashier. | :24:13. | :24:15.
She asked her, | :24:15. | :24:17.
"What are you getting your husband for Christmas this year?" | :24:17. | :24:19.
The lady replied, "The same as last year." | :24:20. | :24:22.
The cashier pulled a little face and went, "Oh." | :24:22. | :24:24.
"No," the lady said. | :24:24. | :24:26.
"I mean the same as he has had for the last ten years." | :24:26. | :24:29.
The cashier pulled even more of a face and exclaimed, "Oh!" | :24:29. | :24:32.
"You're not understanding," she said. | :24:32. | :24:35.
"I give him exactly the same thing every year. | :24:35. | :24:37.
"I don't buy him anything new. | :24:37. | :24:39.
"He has had the same new pair of slippers and a scarf | :24:39. | :24:42.
"every year for ten years. | :24:42. | :24:45.
"We get up, we go to see the family, | :24:45. | :24:49.
"we come home and have Christmas dinner, | :24:49. | :24:51.
"he has a few too many drinks, I give him his presents, | :24:51. | :24:54.
"he opens them and tells me how lovely they are. | :24:54. | :24:57.
"He then puts them down by the side of his chair and goes to sleep. | :24:57. | :25:02.
"I pick them up and put them in the cupboard until next year." | :25:02. | :25:07.
We all laughed in the shopping queue. | :25:07. | :25:10.
It's such a great story, and we can all imagine it. | :25:10. | :25:12.
And yet, here we stand in St Mary Redcliffe, | :25:12. | :25:15.
as people have been standing here before us | :25:15. | :25:17.
every Christmas Day for at least 800 years and I wonder, | :25:17. | :25:20.
are we so intoxicated by the worldly Christmas | :25:20. | :25:23.
that we do not notice that, year after year, | :25:23. | :25:26.
we get the same pair of slippers, same old scarf, | :25:26. | :25:29.
the same old emperor's new clothes. | :25:29. | :25:33.
We dare not truly look at what we are being offered. | :25:33. | :25:36.
We quickly put it down, with a sense of gratitude | :25:36. | :25:39.
but also a sense of fear, | :25:39. | :25:42.
lest we truly perceive that the father of lies | :25:42. | :25:45.
has again pulled his old magician's trick. | :25:45. | :25:49.
So, my brothers and sisters, | :25:49. | :25:53.
dare we just this one time truly ask ourselves, | :25:53. | :25:57.
"What is the gift I have been given?" | :25:57. | :26:01.
And it's not easy for us, | :26:01. | :26:03.
because we have become almost totally enraptured | :26:03. | :26:07.
by what other people tell us Christmas should be. | :26:07. | :26:11.
The adverts on the telly, the jingles in the shops, | :26:11. | :26:14.
the aching memory of how precious this all once was | :26:14. | :26:19.
All these things and many others conspire to try and convince us | :26:19. | :26:22.
that though we are naked, | :26:22. | :26:24.
we are in fact dressed in the emperor's finest suit. | :26:24. | :26:30.
So where could we turn to get a clue? | :26:30. | :26:33.
Where might we truly find this gift? | :26:33. | :26:36.
Must we go on some great journey, follow some cold, shining star? | :26:36. | :26:43.
I think we may find a clue in a slightly more prosaic place. | :26:43. | :26:47.
Somewhere in our homes, | :26:47. | :26:49.
somewhere nearby is a picture on the front of the card | :26:49. | :26:52.
we will find replicating | :26:52. | :26:54.
the Nativity we saw at the beginning of our service. | :26:54. | :26:58.
A picture of a mother and child, a father, | :26:58. | :27:01.
some shepherds and, somewhat stretching the biblical timeline, | :27:01. | :27:05.
there will be three Kings... | :27:05. | :27:08.
and a donkey. | :27:08. | :27:11.
There are many truths I could suggest | :27:11. | :27:13.
about this ubiquitous picture | :27:13. | :27:16.
that is in virtually every home in the land. | :27:16. | :27:18.
But for today, two simple ones. | :27:18. | :27:21.
Firstly, no-one is alone in the picture. | :27:21. | :27:26.
If we are truly seeking the great gift of Christmas, | :27:26. | :27:28.
it cannot be found alone. | :27:28. | :27:31.
At this time, when so many of us make so much of an effort | :27:31. | :27:34.
to be with family, how many are excluded? | :27:34. | :27:39.
Is there someone in my life, or your life, | :27:39. | :27:43.
who because of my wrongs, or possibly theirs, | :27:43. | :27:47.
I am not making any effort with this Christmas? | :27:47. | :27:50.
When I go home from here to my little family, | :27:50. | :27:53.
if I were truly seeking a Christmas gift, | :27:53. | :27:55.
I would be looking beyond that which I have comfortably created, | :27:55. | :27:59.
looking to the outcast, the one who needs my love | :27:59. | :28:04.
but, in truth, I'm too busy and too scared to give it. | :28:05. | :28:09.
And it may be that some of us, we will go home and be alone, | :28:09. | :28:12.
too scared, to prideful to reach out. | :28:12. | :28:19.
For the prodigal mother | :28:19. | :28:21.
to reach out her hand to her long-lost daughter, | :28:21. | :28:24.
for love to be reunited. | :28:25. | :28:27.
Just as the scent of a real Christmas tree | :28:27. | :28:30.
reminds us all of our childhood Christmases, | :28:30. | :28:32.
so these simple reconciliations fill our hearts with heaven. | :28:32. | :28:38.
And lastly, as we look upon the Nativity picture, | :28:38. | :28:41.
we must not be too busy or too distracted | :28:41. | :28:45.
to know that the little child looking out at me and at you | :28:45. | :28:49.
is Almighty God, who, if we could but find the courage to gaze back, | :28:49. | :28:55.
would doubtless completely know us | :28:55. | :28:58.
and in knowing still love us, redeem us and treasure us for ever. | :28:58. | :29:06.
May you this Christmas Day find the true gift of Christmas | :29:06. | :29:09.
by forsaking your pride and reaching out in love | :29:09. | :29:13.
to the little, the lost, the last and the least. | :29:13. | :29:18.
And in so doing, may you reflect the great truth of the crib | :29:18. | :29:22.
that God forsook his Majesty and reached out, in love, to you. | :29:22. | :29:30.
Trust me when I tell you in 800 years' time, | :29:30. | :29:34.
everything you treasure will be dust, | :29:34. | :29:39.
except the love you give and receive. | :29:39. | :29:42.
This, in God, is eternal. | :29:42. | :29:46.
ALL: Amen | :29:46. | :29:56.

give the glory of your resurrection to all who rest in you. | :35:12. | :35:17.
Jesus, Saviour, | :35:17. | :35:20.
hear our prayer. | :35:20. | :35:24.
Jesus, Saviour, child of Mary, you know us and love us, | :35:24. | :35:30.
you share our lives and hear our prayer. Glory to you for ever. | :35:30. | :35:36.
Amen. | :35:36. | :35:46. | |
Glory to God in the highest heaven, | :35:46. | :35:49.
and on earth peace to all in whom he delights. | :35:49. | :35:54.
The peace of the Lord be always with you and also with you. | :35:54. | :36:00.
Let us offer one another a sign of peace. | :36:00. | :36:07.
ALL OFFER EACH OTHER SIGN OF PEACE | :36:07. | :36:17.

Word made flesh, life of the world, | :40:06. | :40:09.
in your incarnation you embraced our poverty, | :40:09. | :40:14.
by your Spirit may we share in your riches. | :40:14. | :40:19.

# Lift up your hearts. | :40:42. | :40:47.
We lift them to the Lord. | :40:47. | :40:51.
# Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. | :40:51. | :40:56.
# It is right to give thanks and praise. | :40:56. | :41:01.
All glory and honour be yours always and everywhere, | :41:01. | :41:05.
mighty Creator, ever-living God. | :41:05. | :41:09.
We give you thanks and praise for your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ, | :41:09. | :41:15.
who for love of our fallen race humbled himself, | :41:15. | :41:20.
and was born of the Virgin Mary by the power of your Spirit, | :41:20. | :41:24.
and lived as one of us. | :41:24. | :41:27.
In this mystery of the Word made flesh, | :41:27. | :41:31.
you have caused his light to shine in our hearts, | :41:31. | :41:34.
to give knowledge of your glory in the face of Jesus Christ. | :41:34. | :41:40.
In him we see our God made visible | :41:40. | :41:44.
and so are caught up in the love of the God we cannot see. | :41:44. | :41:49.
Therefore, with all the angels of heaven, we lift our voices | :41:49. | :41:55.
to proclaim the glory of your name | :41:55. | :41:58.
and sing our joyful hymn of praise. | :41:58. | :42:06.

# Lord God of hosts | :42:20. | :42:26.
# Heaven and earth are full of thy glory | :42:26. | :42:36.
# Glory be to thee O Lord most high | :42:36. | :42:46.
:42:46. | :43:05. | ||
# Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord | :43:05. | :43:15.

# Hosanna in the highest. # | :43:21. | :43:31.
:43:31. | :44:03. | ||
Lord, you are holy indeed, the source of all holiness, | :44:03. | :44:09.
grant that by the power of your Holy Spirit, | :44:09. | :44:12.
and according to your holy will, | :44:12. | :44:15.
these gifts of bread and wine may be to us | :44:15. | :44:20.
the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ, | :44:20. | :44:24.
who, in the same night that he was betrayed, | :44:24. | :44:27.
took bread and gave you thanks, he broke it | :44:27. | :44:32.
and gave it to his disciples, | :44:32. | :44:34.
saying: "Take, eat - this is my body which is given for you, | :44:34. | :44:41.
"do this in remembrance of me." | :44:41. | :44:45.
In the same way, after supper he took the cup and gave you thanks, | :44:45. | :44:50.
he gave it to them, saying, "Drink this, all of you. | :44:50. | :44:55.
"This is my blood of the new covenant, | :44:55. | :44:58.
"which is shed for you and for many | :44:58. | :45:01.
"for the forgiveness of sins. | :45:01. | :45:03.
"Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me." | :45:04. | :45:11.
Great is the mystery of faith. | :45:11. | :45:15.
Christ has died. Christ is risen. | :45:15. | :45:19.
Christ will come again. | :45:19. | :45:22.
And so, Father, calling to mind his death on the cross, | :45:22. | :45:26.
his perfect sacrifice made once for the sins of the whole world, | :45:26. | :45:32.
rejoicing in his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension, | :45:32. | :45:36.
and looking for his coming in glory, | :45:36. | :45:40.
we celebrate this memorial of our redemption. | :45:40. | :45:45.
As we offer you this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, | :45:45. | :45:51.
we bring before you this bread and this cup | :45:51. | :45:55.
and we thank you for counting us worthy | :45:55. | :45:58.
to stand in your presence and serve you. | :45:58. | :46:03.
Send the Holy Spirit on your people and gather into one in your kingdom | :46:03. | :46:09.
all who share this one bread and one cup, | :46:09. | :46:13.
so that we, in the company of the Blessed Virgin Mary, | :46:13. | :46:18.
St Joseph, shepherds, Magi and all the saints, | :46:18. | :46:23.
may praise and glorify you for ever, through Jesus Christ our Lord, | :46:23. | :46:30.
by whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, | :46:30. | :46:37.
all honour and glory be yours, almighty Father, | :46:37. | :46:41.
for ever and ever. Amen. | :46:41. | :46:51.

BELL IS RUNG | :46:52. | :47:02.
:47:02. | :47:04. | ||
Rejoicing in the presence of God here among us, | :47:04. | :47:06.
let us pray with confidence as our Saviour has taught us. | :47:06. | :47:16.
:47:16. | :47:46. | ||
We break the bread of life | :47:46. | :47:50.
and that life is the light of the world. | :47:50. | :47:54.
God here among us, light in the midst of us, | :47:54. | :47:58.
bring us to light and life. | :47:58. | :48:08.
:48:08. | :48:09. | ||
# O Lamb of God | :48:09. | :48:14.
# That takest away the sins of the world | :48:14. | :48:23.
# Have mercy upon us | :48:23. | :48:33.
:48:33. | :48:34. | ||
# O Lamb of God | :48:34. | :48:39.
# That takest away the sins of the world | :48:39. | :48:47.

# O Lamb of God | :48:58. | :49:05.
# That takest away the sins of the world | :49:05. | :49:15.
:49:15. | :49:15. | ||
# Grant us thy peace. # | :49:15. | :49:25.
:49:25. | :49:34. | ||
Christ is the bread which has come down from heaven. | :49:34. | :49:38.
Lord give us this bread for ever. | :49:38. | :49:42.
Most merciful Lord, your love compels us to come in. | :49:42. | :49:47.
Our hands were unclean, our hearts were unprepared, | :49:47. | :49:52.
we were not fit even to eat the crumbs from under your table. | :49:52. | :49:56.
But you, Lord, are the God of our salvation, | :49:56. | :50:00.
and share your bread with sinners. | :50:00. | :50:03.
So cleanse and feed us with the precious body and blood of your Son, | :50:03. | :50:09.
that he may live in us and we in him, | :50:09. | :50:13.
and that we, with the whole company of Christ, | :50:13. | :50:16.
may sit and eat in your kingdom. | :50:16. | :50:20.
Amen. | :50:20. | :50:30. | |

# Come all you faithful Christians that dwell here on earth | :50:41. | :50:47.
# Come celebrate the morning of our dear Saviour's birth | :50:47. | :50:54.
# This is the happy morning This is the blessed morn | :50:54. | :51:02.
# To save our souls from ruin The Son of God was born | :51:02. | :51:12.
:51:12. | :51:18. | ||
# Behold, the angel Gabriel in scripture it is said | :51:19. | :51:26.
# Did with his holy message come to the virgin maid | :51:26. | :51:34.
# Hail blest among all women He thus did greet her then | :51:34. | :51:42.
# Lo thou shalt be the mother of the Saviour of all men | :51:42. | :51:52.
:51:52. | :51:59. | ||
# Her time being accomplished She came to Bethlehem | :51:59. | :52:06.
# And then was safe delivered of the Saviour of all men | :52:06. | :52:14.
# No princely pomp attended him His honours were but small | :52:14. | :52:22.
# A manger was his cradle His bed an ox's stall | :52:22. | :52:32.
:52:32. | :52:38. | ||
# Now to him that is ascended let all our praises be | :52:38. | :52:45.
# May we his steps then follow and he our pattern be | :52:45. | :52:53.
# So when our lives are ended We all may hear him call | :52:53. | :53:01.
# Come souls, receive the kingdom Prepared for you all. # | :53:01. | :53:11.
:53:11. | :53:12. | ||
# So when our lives are ended We all may hear him call | :53:12. | :53:17.
# Come souls, receive the kingdom Prepared for you all. # | :53:17. | :53:27.
