2016, Saturday night and here we are at the Park Stage. The action is in

full swing. Floating Points winding up here. It's been a fantastic

afternoon of fun, mud, music, Tame Impala have been amazing, some of

that set is coming up in this programme as we build up to our

headliner tonight. It's a big moment for Adele, 10. 15pm is when she's

on. Between now and then there's live music. Here in the tree house,

there's special artists playing. St Paul and the Broken Bones, Alabama

playing soon and Saturday Night Magic. Ready for that, dynamo is

coming to pay us a visit. He was on in the Kidz Field earlier. My kids

were enraptured. The man himself almost couldn't get out because so

many kids wanted selfies. He was there for hours. If they've all gone

to bed, he'll be up to perform some magic for us. Very exciting. So in

case you just joined us, let's catch up on the action at Glastonbury 2016

1 and Radio 2 at Glastonbury all weekend. This band you're about to

see, came and did an acoustic session for Radio 1 today. Then they

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE. Thank you so much. An amazing gig earlier for

Manchester's The 1975. I like a tall band. There's been a lot of talk

about mud at Glastonbury this year but that's not really the point.

This year Glastonbury is all about grime. The scene has been one of the

UK's most vibrant for a decade, but in 2016 grime really is having its

big moment. It is slap-bang in the middle of the mainstream. It is the

music that everyone is talking about. On the Main Stage there's

been such a focus here at Glastonbury. The whole of Friday's

bill was given over to grime artists, so we went to check it out.

I'm live in the flesh here at Glastonbury. Where you know me from,

where you know me from? One of the reasons that grime has had this sick

rise in the last year or two is there's a thirst and hunger for

authenticity in music. Real experiences and energy that hasn't

shined for some years. Everyone is looking for it, saying we don't

really like what's going on, like. Where's the real one one? Grime is

like that, like funk or hip-hop. For a long time grime and UK hip-hop

lots its identity. I feel that over the last 18 months ownership has

been the main thing for a lot of artists involved in the currency. Go

over your head, up load it a bit, and you fellow... Grime is very

important to me because it's the UK. It's ours. It's the scene and it is

building and getting more powerful. I'm from Birmingham and I did feel a

little bit uncomfortable rapping in my accent when I first started. But

now I'm so proud that I can be myself on the track. Ten years ago

you would never think cue get your foot in the door because you are not

from London. But now the whole game's changed. Bugsy Malone is on

stage right now. He's got a model where artists outside the M 25

finally believe that this is the way of life. It is growing at the

moment, fast. I come from quite a difficult background. It is just

having a voice. Somebody like me could have easily been sat going

through what I was going through with nobody to get it off my chest.

This gives young people who might not have so much of a chance, an

opportunity to talk. Where I grew up, if you didn't have a lyric you

was a moron. Everyone had a bar when I was growing up. A really good

lyric with resonates with someone has sonates with someone has to come

from somewhere - maybe a past experience or something you want to

do. It has to come from who you are, you know what I'm saying? I don't

know why we like the postcode... It is called grime. It is truthful. It

is raw to the core. It is not watered down for the radio or for T

A lot of people like how fresh it sounds and how warm and British it

really is. The game's changed a little bit. I always tell young

artists, there are no boundaries. Look at myself. Look at all these

other sick artists and go that you can be greater. You are a like a

King, man. CHEERING Cheer. Just a little bit of

the action that was happening here yesterday at Glastonbury. Amazing to

see Stormzy. The energy is so infectious. A big moment for grime

at Glastonbury. And there was a big focus on it, but we saw earlier

today Lady Leisure played on the Park Stage. We took some of that

performance on BBC Two. And amazing to see, and Adele shouted out

Stormzy in one of her big gigs. Will he come out with Adele later on?

We'll see. Now to a Glastonbury performer, Dine mow is here. How are

you guys doing? How are you? I had a big one last night. I'm trying to

get over it. I'm trying to hold it together for Adele. My kids saw you

earlier and you were grabbed for so many selfies with children that you

couldn't get out. What happened? I think I did at least a thousand

selfies in the kids field today, and I will do more later. I'm a bit of a

selfie King now. Move over Kim Kardashian. Dynamo is here. You've

been on a huge arena tour. The most popular magician. What are you doing

for us tonight? Right now I want to use your imagination. I've got some

cards. Even that, that's really cool already. It's already a bit magical.

Peel Stage earlier. It is interesting to see people's journey

developing and growing in pop later. She was on the BBC Introducing stage

two or three years ago. We heard her play in Liverpool. The next act you

are about to see tonight on BBC Two is from Nottingham. He's got an

amazing voice. He has his beautiful band with him. This is Ady Suleiman.

it's time now to head over and find out what happened when our own Jo

Whiley call up with one of this weekend's most talked about artists,

it is tonight's headliner Adele. She might be the biggest artist in the

world right now, but Glastonbury can still make you a little bit nervous,

even if that is the case as Jo found out.

I don't think there are many people head lining on the Pyramid Stage to

take the time out to have a chat pre-gig, this is quite something

that Adele has decided to do this. You're either mad or very brave? I'm

a bit mad. I don't know what I'm doing here. Take this as a

distraction. Yeah, definitely. Tell me about Glastonbury as a child the

very first time? The very first time. I don't remember. I was very,

very young. It was muddy, I remember it being one of the worst years. I

remember seeing garbage and being like, I want to do that. I remember

doing that for sure. Being in the circus, there's a lot of photographs

of me during my set, from when I was younger. That's kind of made me want

to do it. I grew up at festivals. Glastonbury is a massive part of my

life. The first time that you played Glastonbury, the only time you

played? I played once, the Guardian tent, to no-one. And then downpour.

So everyone rushed in and spoke over me. I think it was 2007. It was in

the T tent. I went on just before Florence. Oh, did you, what. It was

amazing. Did you do the whole experience? Oh, yeah. You camped?

Oh, yeah, lost my mates. My manager was just like moaning about the

winnebagos. I used to be in a tent with nowhere to stay, blag a space

in the arch way of a tent. Always. I was drunk. So you came last year as

well I came last year to semi-scope it out and semi-see Kanye on the

Saturday night. I watch today on Emily. I was so frightened just

watching his set and at the same time, I said yeah, all right I'll do

it. Why did you do it? I think Glastonbury will end up being a big

part of my kids' life as well. I want to say, I did that. I want it

to be part of his childhood as well. So I want him to see me do it. Your

proper debut is head lining on the Pyramid Stage the Saturday night,

I'm not saying that to make you sick. I'm as nervous as I was in the

Guardian tent. My nerves, I keep bursting into tears and feeling

sick. Earlier, I felt like driving home. I could have got home before

my set. Now I'm stuck. How did the arena tour, those shows, did they

prepare you for doing this? I love arenas. There's so many people to

talk to. I don't know if I can pull it off tonight. I want it talk. I

don't want to ignore the crowd. Whether there's ten of you or 10,000

or a few more than that, as long as they're happy to see my set, I want

to talk to them and see what their favourite colour it. It will be

interesting to see if it works. I can't not talk to them. If they get

wet, I'll get wet. How do you adapt your set? You're not going to have

dancers? I can't imagine I'll be dancing! No dancers. I've got my

orchestra, that will be nice. I've got my band. Nothing, I haven't got

any bells or whistles. Have you got outstanding memories of bands and

performances in the past, whether it on television or when you were here,

like the great moments for you? Arctic Monkies, last shadow puppets,

do you remember That's Momma, African singers, bloody amazing. She

was like the first Beyonce. She was in the jazz field years ago. That

was amazing. Due watch Beyonce? On TV. I think I was in America then.

What due think? She's like my I'd o. -- idol. She aced it. She kept

leaving the stage to throw up because she was pregnant. She said

that! She kept walking off stage to throw up. That's not exclusive by

the way, I saw that on TV one time. Hang on, if you exit the stage

you're not pregnant. No! I don't want any more kids. I'm trying to

think what my highlight was. I'm going to say Basement Jaxx. Did she

stand in for Kylie? Unbelievable. That was my favourite and Coldplay

always smash it. Advice, have you had advice from headliners in the

past, like Florence or Coldplay? She came to my London show and said it

would be great. Chris has been helpful. I spoke to him yesterday

and I cried a lot. I'm really emotional about it. He said, well,

this is the worst thing that can happen, your sound will probably cut

out for you, don't worry about that. It happens for everyone. If it rains

you will fall over in front of thousands of people. Somebody will

throw something at you, a pat or mud, but it won't be spiteful. It

will be friendly. Thanks Chris! Probably don't go to Chris Martin

for any kind of pep talk is the takeaway for that interview. Oh,

Adele, Britain is rooting for Adele, I feel. She can bring us all

together. Can't she? In our mutual love of Adele. She's incredible.

Tonight's performance will be a big moment in her musical story as well.

About half an hour to go until Adele takes to the Pyramid Stage. We will

Wow! Absolutely spectacular set from Chvrches earlier today. What a hero.

She should be a cometic book hero. I'm sure someone could draw her. And

the sunset playing along as well. It looked beautiful. In anticipation of

Adele's headline set, Clara went to see what's going on there 30 minutes

before she goes on stage. Yes, here I am in the belly of the beast at

the iconic Pyramid Stage waiting for one Misadeal Atkins. Those eyes are

arguably the most well applied liquid I liner in pop. I've never

seen as many excited people in one space as today. We had in one space

as today. We had tame tame, who -- we had Tame Impala who warmed up for

her earlier. A beautiful set. Everyone is rooting for Adele. This

is a woman who famously said she would never do Glastonbury, too much

mud. She couldn't deal with the cloud. Then she let slip she didn't

have an opportunity to do it last year, because the record wasn't

level. But now 25 is out there. I will never forget that famous day

inning October when there was that adbreak and we heard the words,

Hello. You may have seen her talking to Jo earlier, expressing how

nervous she's feeling tonight. It's understandable. There's a lot of

people out to see her. Everybody is truly on her side. Three albums

worth of material to get through. We absolutely cannot wait. As we wait

for Adele, I want to have a look back at some of her peers, some of

the famous faces who have grace that the pyramid stage and truly made it

their own. The pyramid at Glastonbury Festival is the most

instantly recognisable stage in the world. Whoever you are, however

large the star, a headline twig on the Pyramid Stage is always the big

one. And after treading its hallowed boards, most artists fall in love

with it. I felt like a rock star. This is like the highlight of my

career. That was as good as it gets. I love the excitement, the

electricity. Perhaps part of its appeal lies in the nature of its

unusual design. It's a fantastic shape. A pyramid turned into a

stage. Isn't that strange? Another element that adds to its symbolic

power is its history. Which goes back to the first real Glastonbury

festival, in 1971, the Glastonbury Fair. The pyramid first became a

permanent structure in 1981. Made of corrugated steel and Telegraph

poles. When not hosting bands it was a cow shed. In 1994, disaster

struck, between Pyramid Stage burnt down. And for the rest of the '90s

it was replaced by a temporary stage. In 2000 the Pyramid Stage

rose from the ashes into the iconic inanation we know and love today.

Christened with a gallon of work from Worthy Farm by Michael Eavis

and Robert Plant. Here goes the pyramid for the third millennium. It

is open! This history and near mythical status is something all

artists feed on. The Pyramid Stage is a Stonehenge for British bands.

An epic headline set can springboard the hottest new band to greatness

and catapult an already great band into the rock stratosphere. It was

sheer size of it that blew us away. To top the bill on the Pyramid Stage

is an appointment with destiny. It's the stuff rock 'n' roll dreams are

made of. It's the equivalent of scoring a goal at Wembley.

CHEERING. I interviewed the guy who built the first one, the first

Pyramid Stage. Tony, on my show yesterday on BBC 6 Music. Apparently

they used recommissioned, decommissioned MOD canvas and

Telegraph poles he said, in 1971. It's a beast, that stage. One tenth

the size of the pyramid of Giza apparently. We'll be going to it

soon. But now something intimate from a band in Birmingham, Alabama.

The sun soaked psych of Australian band Tame Impala. Isn't it as dreamy

sound! Noted music for tepees, isn't it? I like it. They were on the

Pyramid Stage earlier on before tonight's headliner. We saw her

interview earlier on. She's played Glastonbury once in a tiny tent just

before Florence And The Machine. She camped here years ago. Things have

changed so much. Three albums in. 25 was the latest. She's on a mammoth

World Tour at the moment. She's on like a proper health kick for it as

well. She quit booze for it. She's glowing. She's on fire. We're

excited about tonight. Before we bring you Adele on the Pyramid

Stage, here's a bit more about your Saturday night headliner at

she was on our screens and on the road to glory. We welcome from

because it's going to be a good one for you, I promise you. I have never

been so moved by anything in my life, and I dreaded ever possibly

being asked to do this festival, not that I ever thought I would be asked

to do it. I was up there on that platform with Emily Eavis last year

watching Kanye West, which I thought was amazing. And I've never been so

frightened of the crowd I saw last year. As I was watching it, I was

like, all right, I will do it! I have always wanted to do this, and

the truth is, my whole childhood and a career I have was inspired when I

was about seven and I was up there by one of those nights, that tower,

I was there and I saw Garbage playing and I was like, oh, my days,

I want to do that. I saw Prodigy, I saw Radiohead. That was when I was

like, I want to be making music, not necessarily to be up on this stage,

but it's amazing the way music brings people together and that's

why I am so grateful you came together for me. And this festival

is so amazing and magical because of the people that come. You can feel

it in the earth here. I am sure you agree that you lose all your in

emissions when you are here. And that is you are the people on the

other side of the barriers who make this festival so incredible -- you

lose your inhibitions. This is the most incredible moment of my life so

far, so thank you so much. You have been amazing. I'm not sure if I will

remember it. I can't even expand how I feel, it's the most surreal thing

I've ever done. It is bizarre. I didn't want to come and now I don't

want to go off. This song changed my life. I wrote it when I was

obviously miserable, that's nothing new. We all know that. I wanted a

friend in this song. I wanted to feel not so alone. And within a

couple of hours of starting to write it, feeling sorry for myself, I had

a bad cold, all of that, and it did its job for me. The song helped me

fix might have a bit. And when I started playing it to people I know

and love, they started reacting to this song very differently to

anything else I had written. Then I did it on Jools Holland, and it

started getting bigger all stop then I did it at the Brit awards and it

completely changed my life. Nothing has been the same ever since. This

is a song I feel like if anyone remembers me in years to come, this

might be the song they do. I just want you to note that I will never,

Adele nailing headlining the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury Festival. I

hope she he cherishes every single second of that performance. Knowing

how much it meanted to her from the chat we did before hand. This was

her moment. She said that if she did it OK tonight then that would be as

good as it ever gets. This is like the pinnacle of her career. If she

messed it up it would be devastating. She said tonight was

the moment in her career? It's extraordinary. I've never seen a

headline act like. That there has never been a greater connection, has

there, between the audience and headline audience. I have never seen

anything like. She wanted the runway, get out and talk to the

audience and do everything on her shows and have that connection.

Somewhere as huge as that d and to have that intimacy, incredible

glchlt you have a heart of stone did you almost get emotional at any

point? There Were real moments. All the torch lights. I liked that. Just

the torch lights? No. It was amazing. Never seen anything quite

like it. That control and connection with the crowd. Clara is still down

a piece of her with us emotionally and physically with these song

lyrics she sprayed into the crowd. She took us on a journey from that

seven-year-old girl she told us about who came here inspired by

this crowd. Very happy that I gave you that swearing warning. Like

said, with Adele what you see is what you get. She gives all of

herself to us. We were truly, I think we were truly blessed tonight.

It was really overwhelming to watch her, actually. Coming out I don't

think she could believe that many people came to here her. It was

evident in what we all just shared now. I'm sorry, back to you, Adele.

since I visited the production office with Jools Holland. They were

did a phenomenal version of Moon Age Day Dream by Bowie. One of my

favourite tracks of Ziggy Stardust. That was a ept moment for What

about. Me. Bass ill Brush. I watched the performance and met and chatted

to him. A career high. Adele Adele and Basil brush. I cons. The Kidz

Field seeing how happy they were. Dynamo. It was good going there,

seeing another bit of Glastonbury. Next we are going to go to Fat Boy

faif riot things about Glastonbury is sometimes you don't know if you

are imagining things or not. We were walking down a path on the way to

the Glad and found this absolutely incredible little cove of disco ball
