Ben Howard & Jessie J Hackney Weekend 2012

Hello there and welcome back to Hackney Weekend day two. We are

still in our treehouse with a wonderful view of the Hackney

Marshes and kicking off a summer of music on BBC Three in fine style.

The good news is we are bathed in sunshine. Look at that! Hooray!

Looking beautiful, in a month's time that will be used for the

Olympics but for now and this weekend it's all about Hackney, all

about the music. On that very main stage last night was Jay-Z with

friends, MIA, Rihanna and Kanye West. Tonight it's all about

Rihanna. You can see her set from 10.00pm. As well as that we have

Jessie J, Ben Howard, Florence and The Machine and Gemma should be

there as well, where are you? it's me again. I am here in the mud.

I am going to be getting into every nook and cranny this evening. I

have seen Tinie Tempah perform, wow, I cannot wait for Rihanna. Maybe

surprises, who knows? Right now, let's go!

B. How you doing? Very well. Are you all right? I am good. We are in

your manor. Kind of, we were in east London. Was it good to play to

your home crowd? Amazing, first time we ever had anything like this

to this scale, know what I mean n the East End of London, it's great.

To be part of the build-up to the Olympics as well, must be special

to play this Festival. Obviously, that's a massive event. So, I don't

know t felt right to be doing this at this point, obviously BBC, you

know agreed with that as well, that's why we are here but for me

personally, done the BBC Three documentary we were talking about

and it felt like the right time in my life to give something back to

my community, you know. You are properly serious about this, you

don't want to just drop in and you want to make a difference. It's

insincere otherwise. When I first came out as Plan B as the artist,

my first record I was trying to get through to those kids that I felt

that society was ignoring. Now people were listening to me, it

feels like OK, this is the beginning of changing the way they

think about themselves and the rest of the country thinks about them.

And we can - I can only do that through kind of going into schools,

working with young people, making them believe in themselves. A lot

of them, 90% of them, all love music, into music and all in their

own way, like writing lyrics and stuff. It was just about tapping

into that, with the documentary anyway, tapping into that, showing

them the hard work that goes into performing at an event like this or

having this as a career. It's hard. Shall we see a bit of it, we have a

12 years, man. A long time. arrived in 199. Do you remember I

used to really try and wind me up. Do you remember the sick twisted

stories. I hated your stories, I said it's revolting, but I gave it

an A. I can't remember. Well, I can. I was going for shock tactics.

were, it was all about about snot- encrusted... Nice! That was

fascinating that documentary. saw a side of you was you being a

teacher, and you had to really tell these kids off and get them into

line because when they first saw you they were like oh, my God, it's

Plan B and towards the end their interest went a little. Did you

find it hard to do that? We spoke about this earlier, it's not

actually telling them off is what they're used to, they're used to

being told off and some of them they'll do things in order to get

that side of you out. When somebody's showering them with love

and encouragement and motivation they're not used to it. They look

at you and they think what's your game? Why do you care? Into they

try and test you, some of them. I guess they don't believe that what

you are trying to give them or show them is real. Some of them try and

get the reaction out of you that they're used to getting from other

adults and actually the trick is not losing your temper, not judging

them, not telling them off. It's by giving them even more love. Say

listen, I am here for you and trying to do something positive

with you and talking to them on a real level because if they don't

take the opportunity that I am giving them, what have they got?

That's the one thing, they know what they've got if they don't take

up this chance. They don't know what they've got unless they do

this. That's the great thing about having a dream and the problem with

a lot of these kids, they're made to feel they're not aloud to have a

dream, purely from the environment they've grown up in or come from.

As a society, that's our fault, we make these kids believe they're not

aloud to dream or be something. would love to look at some of your

kids, they were down here on the Introducing Stage. Let's check them

#. One of my - those kids had done amazingly there, you set them up

and sort of taught them all the bits and written a song with them

and one thing they couldn't get past was performing in front of the

girls, that was one of my favourite bits of the documentary. You went

what's wrong? They got intimidated by the girls, that little hurdle.

It shows how much power women have! That's it. Men rule the world. You

know, we start wars, all those kind of things. I am intimidated by Fern

all the time. But women run things really. That's it. You know, a girl

can just cut you down to size and these girls are from east London,

you know, they can hang with the boys. They can hold it up with

their own. Yeah, that's one kind of hurdle. -- a hurdle the guys had to

get over. But there's so many other things. It's amazing documentary. I

urge to you watch it, it's on the iPlayer for another week, I think.
