to the first show of these shows - Later with me, the late Jools Holland.

Good evening. I hope you are sitting comfortably.

I'm delighted to say that we are celebrating 250 versions of Later,

yes 250 shows we've made.

As you may realise, you start with one show, before you know it you've done two,

then four, eight, sixteen

and eventually, 250 shows

filled with extraordinary music, brand-new talent,

great legends, newies, yes, the lot.

In this show, we'll feature some enjoyable moments

that special viewers, which you'll see, have picked.

I'd like to start off with one of my favourite moments from this early show

with the wonderful Johnny Cash.

On any one show, you'll get

maybe Tom Jones and you'll get some weird punk band with their pants on

and you'll get someone who's a Tamla Motown heroine like,

Martha Reeves or Mary Wells, or someone like that.

It's just such a fantastic combination.

Plus you'll get very populist performers, like

Robbie Williams and then you'll get some act from Croatia

that plays the suitcase, that you've never heard of before.

I think one performance that really sticks in my head

was Paolo Nutini, because...

it was his first single,

and he just seemed so young.

And he just kind of created this magnetism around himself

and it was weird, because he looked like a boy.

And yet, this amazing voice came out of him.

On that same show...Gogol Bordello as well

who I thought were a bit frightening...

to be honest. I thought I wouldn't want to get stuck in a room with them,

especially not a small room cos they looked out of control.

I'm sure they're not, I'm sure they're terribly nice and polite.

I remember seeing Radiohead as well.

And I've always thought Thom Yorke was such a fascinating, dark character

with quite a complicated mind.

I wanted to get him in a room with a pad and paper,

and ask him about his brain and how it worked.

I remember the first time I went on Later. I didn't know much about the programme.

I went on there... It was a different kind of thing for me.

One of the first TV things I'd done.

I was quite nervous, to be fair. I just got on with it.

But it was just different being in that studio with all the people surrounding you.

It was weird.

What can I say?

I plan to make my pay...

The more and more I did that show, the more I liked it, the more I realised how respected it was.

I realised it was a really, really good thing to do

as I was getting further and bigger in my career ad well. It was always nice to go there

at a point where I'd crossed over, as well as before I crossed over.

I always think of Later as a sort of dating agency

for the musically desperate. It's where, as it were, meet new people.

And... there's been a sequence of...all the way through

just girls you see for the first time...Amy Winehouse.

I remember a fantastic girl called Priscilla Ahn...

And...Corinne Bailey Rae.

Recently, last year, there was a girl called Melody Gardot who I didn't know.

I'm completely obsessed by this bit of footage.

There are about 9,000 hits on YouTube

and I think I'm 8,000 of them. I send them to all of my friends in America.

If you want to feel that sort of frisson and magic of what music can be like,

and what girls can be like,

all the sort of Trans-Atlantic

sexiness and gorgeousness of a smoky room,

then watch this extraordinary three-minute clip.

And it's Later in its perfection.

I was actually intimidated and scared the first time, cos we had to lead the riff, I think.

You know when they start with a riff

and James started doing Back In Black.

I don't know. I felt... All of a sudden I felt, "I'm not a musician, I don't deserve to be here."

I did feel quite intimidated...

to the point that it kind of make you angry, really.

But sometimes that can make for a better performance.

The last time we were on when we did Peeled Apples off Journal For Plague Lovers,

that felt really rewarding

cos we'd never been on the show with Richey in the band.

We'd always wanted to, but it never happened,

so the fact we were playing his lyrics on Later...

We did Jackie Collins and Peeled Apples ..that felt really...

Like some kind of vindication really cos his words were, you know, as important

if not more than the music.

It is one of those music shows that certain things just inspire you, really.

The Libertines, really, was the big bolt from the blue.

I fell in love with them just from the first picture, really, from the tunics,

but James was doing Ocean Spray on there with a trumpet player, Know Your Enemy was coming out,

and he called me up to say, "Yeah, they're the boys," you know.

You could just feel something, some raggedness, some romance,

some nihilism, some vanity, and that really came through on the TV as well.

The secret ingredient is probably the fact that it doesn't pander to any trends,

it kind of transcends trends. It's nothing to do with fashion,

so nobody's on their guard, thinking,

"Oh, God, if I don't get this right, my career's finished."

It really is about the music and really is about celebrating the artist.

That must be a great feeling, to be a musician,

and suddenly not have to think about what people think about you.

Cos there, you're not judged on anything apart from...

"You're good anyway, that's why you're here."

I'm a black music fan, so Billy Preston, before he died,

doing That's The Way God Planned It, I remember singing along and swaying along to that.

I would have got me lighter out, but I don't smoke.

One of the times that I remember SO clearly

was when, I think, Datsuns were playing, also Coldplay were there,

and Foo Fighters. It was like rock wars that night,

everyone was trying to be really loud,

with the exception of Coldplay, obviously, they don't do rock wars.

They do it in their own special way.

I remember standing really close to Foo Fighters

when they were playing, and the volume wasn't turned up to 11,

it was to 12, it was that loud, just being blown away by the volume.

And it was just such an occasion, it was really exciting,

and you can see how the bands play off each other

and how it really, really matters to them, how they come across.

I think that's one of my favourite moments.

It's absolutely the Holy Grail.

I've been watching Jools for years and loving it,

and imagining that maybe, one day, I'd get on it.

So I got the call, had no idea who else was on it,

literally had 24 hours to get down from the north, down to London,

ran in my flat, had a shower, jumped in a cab,

got the studios, eh...

and I was almost just pushed straight on!

Erm, you know, hadn't...

Hadn't thought about what I was going to wear,

I ended up with like jumper sleeves on my legs!

I thought, "They're really cool!" Like, hiking boots,

jumper sleeves, a little Top Shop skirt,

a little knackered old black T-shirt and just, you know, on, done.

And I'm just, thank God, really good...

Like, much better under pressure.

If it's a rehearsal, I'll make a mistake,

but I know that I'm better under pressure,

so I was like, "Come on, just be fierce, do your thing,

"don't think about it."

And it's funny watching it, cos I can just see my face...

I'm not really aware of anything around me,

I'm just, you know...TCB!

My mum and dad were watching and my dad said that he jumped round the living room, just going,

"She's bloody done it!"

everywhere I go, a few interviews, they'll say,

"So, you broke in on the Jools Holland show,

"what an amazing performance,

"it was the platform that started your career,"

and it really was, so all hail. It was such a special opportunity.

I didn't even know what Jools Holland was, cos I didn't live here

and also, I don't watch TV. so the whole thing was like...

kinda surreal for me, and I didn't know none of the bands.

And you know how they all have the stage?

I said, "Where am I gonna be?" "Oh, they're just gonna shove you out in the middle of the floor."

So...I thought it was gonna be a disaster, you know?

And, er...but everyone was so nice to me there,

and I just figured, "Oh, well, I'll play," cos I just play an old, beat-up guitar.

So I thought, you know, if it's the end of my career,

that don't matter cos I haven't started it yet.

But I've watched it on the TV, you know?

And I've caught it a couple of times where it was just so, like...

One time, I think I turned it on and I got Elbow on there.

And I really liked them, it was just majestic to see them on there.

The one performance that really sticks out for me...

Well, one of them, cos there were loads.

I'm going to stick to my sort of genre though.

Which is obviously soul, R&B and hip-hop.

It was Mary J Blige, No More Drama.

For the casual viewer, they wouldn't really know the history of Mary J.

She's somebody who has absolutely... all her material comes from her life,

and a fan of Mary J would know that she's always been unhappy,

miserable... You know! Pained. She brought the blues back into R&B,

in a sense, in a way that no other female artist was doing at the time

in the early '90s. Then there came a pivotal moment in her career,

where she changed. The drugs had gone, the bad relationships,

And Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis wrote the song for her, No More Drama.

And it's quite worthy, you know, when I first heard it, I thought,

"OK." I heard it on record, I thought I understood the record,

but it means nothing on record compared to the performance.

This woman, whenever she performs this song,

you just watch a person feeling the music.

Mary J took it to church on Later.

The only thing she didn't do was break down in tears,

she normally breaks down in tears when she does it.

It was one of the...not pitch perfect, but most emotive performances

I've ever seen on Jools Holland.

And you can see the crowd are in awe at the end,

because very rarely does an artist truly give it up

the way she did with No More Drama. It was magnificent.

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

What makes the show work is putting together the very different groups,

so you might have a solo woman country and western singer

from Nashville, along with a rock'n'roll band

or a young British band,

and it's the combinations, I think, that work.

And there's always the fact that you've usually got, like,

six bands around the kind of edge of a circle,

and they're watching the other bands, so you've got this

kind of mutual respect going on all the time,

so it's fascinating to see one musician applauding another musician.

So I think that's what really makes it work, I think it's the only show

that puts together different kinds of music,

and that's because of Jools' general interest in music, I think.

He has such a broad range of interests.

And the interviews, and when he plays piano

and someone sings a song just with him,

and then they talk, that's always fascinating.

-Rehab.

-Yeah.

-When did you write that one?

-Um, I wrote that...

in February or March, in New York, with Mark Ronson.

And we were just walking down the street,

and I sang the hook, and he burst out laughing. He said, "Who's that?"

I said, "I just made it up!" And he was like, "That would be really cool."

So I said, "Let's go to the studio now, we can knock it out in an hour."

-You went straight there and did it, just like that?

-Yeah, literally.

-Your voice has become

-more powerful, your songwriting has become stronger, do you feel that happening?

-Definitely.

I'm very proud of this record and I feel that unless I could have bettered myself, I might as well

-give up.

-And it's a different vibration,

-it's got a sort of Motown groove.

-Yes.

What's the first music that you listened to?

A lot of jazz, really, a lot of Sarah Vaughan,

loads of Sarah Vaughan songs - "April In Paris",

but I think one of my earliest memories is listening to my granddad

play "Tenderly", my Pop Larry, God rest his soul. "Tenderly".

Did your granddad play an instrument or did he play the record?

-No, he'd play it off the record.

-Do you know how to sing that?

-Yes.

'92 was the first time I done it,

when my first solo album come out.

I pretty much did it every time I put a record out, really,

which is quite a few times over the last 250 years, whatever it's been.

I think whether it's politics, sport, whatever it is, what you need

for great communicators is a combination

of real knowledge, proper knowledge,

and enthusiasm. When it comes to music, no-one beats Jools Holland

for that. He has kept really good, serious popular music,

a big spread of different performers and bands, on our screens

for a very long time, which nobody else has done.

When I was in, Sonic Youth were on and also the great Lily Allen,

and I got at least four or five kisses from her, which was,

I think, my career highlight of all time. Thanks, Jools.

For me, the whole experience of watching Later is what I don't expect to see.

That's part of why I watch it.

I tune in to watch the bands I'm a fan of,

cos I know they'll perform well, stakes are high on the show,

but also I get to watch classic performances from...

timeless musicians who've been around a long time.

A lot of my favourite performances are strange things like Michael McDonald

and stuff like that because I've never seen them sing before

and watching him and Jools do a duet is something really special.

But for me, on a rock level,

the one that stood out as soon as I had to think about this

was At The Drive-In.

They did One Arm Scissor and that was in 2000, I think,

and that was a really game-changing moment for rock and roll.

Because Later, then, as it is today, was established as the place to go

and perform for bands, and to watch as a fan.

Up to that point... We'd been coming off the back of the Britpop thing

and we were in a pop whirlwind. It was Backstreet Boys, Britney Spears, Westlife and Boyzone

and there was singer-songwriters in the form of Travis and stuff,

but no-one was really kicking the door down.

And when I saw that performance, and I knew the song and the band,

but to me, it must have felt like watching MC5,

or something, you know? It had that incredible punk rock spirit

with this amazing tune that was rumbling underneath

but with a total disregard to the craft of the song

and everything thrown into the performance.

Somehow that benefited the song.

I don't quite know how, it's detuned everywhere and they miss cue-points, everything's shambolic,

but the spirit of that performance stood out to me as

one of the great Later moments.

My first time on Jools Holland was in 2006

and I'd only just been signed.

They picked me... You know when they have the new talent?

They did it with KT Tunstall and stuff like that.

So I did that and it was really, really frightening.

I think someone pulled out and it was... Oh, Bjork was on it,

Paul McCartney was on it and it was my first time being in a TV studio,

let alone actually being on TV.

I have the fondest memories of that. Meeting Jools,

the hallways, the dressing rooms, the floor,

it was so much bigger... I always thought it was tiny

cos everyone says studios are never as big as they look on TV and it was just massive.

It was just amazing. It was the best night ever. When I started,

my guitar wasn't on, so I thought I'd have to do it again,

and everyone else got cleared and didn't have to do their performance again

but I was frightened I'd have to sing in front of a Beatle again!
