I'm sorry, sir, but you can't park here. It's a restricted area.

0:00:080:00:12

He loves music.

0:00:120:00:13

100% talent.

0:00:130:00:15

Gracefully mental.

0:00:150:00:16

Authentic.

0:00:160:00:17

-Occasionally unintelligible.

-Virtuoso.

0:00:170:00:20

Demonic. On the piano, I meant!

0:00:200:00:23

Democratic.

0:00:230:00:24

Call for you, Mr Holland.

0:00:240:00:26

I'm sorry, I haven't got the time. I'll take it LATER.

0:00:260:00:29

I'd describe Jools as charming.

0:00:290:00:31

-Smart.

-Talented.

0:00:310:00:33

Thank you. Good evening. Welcome, ladies and gentlemen,

0:00:330:00:36

to the first show of these shows - Later with me, the late Jools Holland.

0:00:360:00:40

Good evening. I hope you are sitting comfortably.

0:00:470:00:50

I'm delighted to say that we are celebrating 250 versions of Later,

0:00:500:00:55

yes 250 shows we've made.

0:00:550:00:57

As you may realise, you start with one show, before you know it you've done two,

0:00:570:01:01

then four, eight, sixteen

0:01:010:01:03

and eventually, 250 shows

0:01:030:01:05

filled with extraordinary music, brand-new talent,

0:01:050:01:08

great legends, newies, yes, the lot.

0:01:080:01:11

In this show, we'll feature some enjoyable moments

0:01:110:01:14

that special viewers, which you'll see, have picked.

0:01:140:01:17

I'd like to start off with one of my favourite moments from this early show

0:01:170:01:21

with the wonderful Johnny Cash.

0:01:210:01:23

APPLAUSE AND CHEERING

0:01:230:01:25

# I hear the train a comin'

0:01:340:01:36

# It's rollin' 'round the bend,

0:01:370:01:39

# And I ain't seen the sunshine since I don't know when

0:01:390:01:43

# I'm stuck in Folsom Prison and time keeps draggin' on

0:01:430:01:49

# But that train keeps on rollin' on down to San Antone.

0:01:520:01:58

# When I was just a baby, my mama told me,

0:02:000:02:04

# "Son, always be a good boy, don't ever play with guns."

0:02:040:02:09

# But I shot a man in Reno, just to watch him die

0:02:090:02:15

# When I hear that whistle blowin' I hang my head and cry... #

0:02:180:02:24

Woah!

0:02:240:02:26

# I bet there's rich folks eatin'

0:02:510:02:54

# In a fancy dining car

0:02:540:02:56

# They're probably drinkin' coffee and smokin' big cigars

0:02:560:03:00

# Well I know I had it comin'

0:03:000:03:03

# I know I can't be free

0:03:030:03:06

# But those people keep on movin'

0:03:100:03:12

# And that's what tortures me

0:03:120:03:16

# Well, if they freed me from this prison

0:03:430:03:45

If that railroad train was mine

0:03:450:03:47

# I bet I'd move it on a little further down the line

0:03:470:03:52

# Far from Folsom Prison

0:03:520:03:55

# That's where I want to stay

0:03:550:03:58

# And I'd let that lonesome whistle blow my blues away. #

0:04:010:04:08

APPLAUSE AND CHEERING

0:04:160:04:20

On any one show, you'll get

0:04:220:04:24

maybe Tom Jones and you'll get some weird punk band with their pants on

0:04:240:04:28

and you'll get someone who's a Tamla Motown heroine like,

0:04:280:04:33

Martha Reeves or Mary Wells, or someone like that.

0:04:330:04:35

It's just such a fantastic combination.

0:04:350:04:39

Plus you'll get very populist performers, like

0:04:390:04:42

Robbie Williams and then you'll get some act from Croatia

0:04:420:04:46

that plays the suitcase, that you've never heard of before.

0:04:460:04:49

I think one performance that really sticks in my head

0:04:490:04:53

was Paolo Nutini, because...

0:04:530:04:57

it was his first single,

0:04:570:05:00

and he just seemed so young.

0:05:000:05:02

And he just kind of created this magnetism around himself

0:05:020:05:08

and it was weird, because he looked like a boy.

0:05:080:05:10

And yet, this amazing voice came out of him.

0:05:100:05:13

# ..Beside me

0:05:130:05:15

# Oh... And I found

0:05:150:05:19

# That I'm bound to wander down that one-way road... #

0:05:190:05:26

On that same show...Gogol Bordello as well

0:05:260:05:31

who I thought were a bit frightening...

0:05:310:05:33

to be honest. I thought I wouldn't want to get stuck in a room with them,

0:05:330:05:38

especially not a small room cos they looked out of control.

0:05:380:05:42

I'm sure they're not, I'm sure they're terribly nice and polite.

0:05:420:05:46

I remember seeing Radiohead as well.

0:05:470:05:49

And I've always thought Thom Yorke was such a fascinating, dark character

0:05:490:05:55

with quite a complicated mind.

0:05:550:05:58

I wanted to get him in a room with a pad and paper,

0:05:580:06:01

and ask him about his brain and how it worked.

0:06:010:06:04

# Please could you stop the noise

0:06:220:06:26

# I'm trying to get some rest

0:06:260:06:31

# From all the unborn chicken voices in my head

0:06:390:06:51

# What's there?

0:06:510:07:01

# What's there?

0:07:010:07:09

# When I am king

0:07:110:07:14

# You will be first against the wall

0:07:140:07:20

# With your opinion which is of no consequence at all

0:07:290:07:40

# What's there?

0:07:410:07:50

# What's there? #

0:07:500:07:59

HE SCATS

0:08:110:08:14

# Ambition makes you look pretty ugly

0:08:210:08:24

# Kicking, squealing, gucci little piggy

0:08:270:08:31

# Yeah, yeah, yeah

0:08:310:08:34

0:08:430:08:45

# You don't remember

0:08:450:08:46

# Why don't you remember my name?

0:08:460:08:49

# Off with his head, man Off with his head, man

0:08:490:08:52

# Why don't you remember my name? I guess he does

0:08:520:08:59

# Oh-oh-oh

0:09:370:09:41

APPLAUSE AND CHEERING

0:12:150:12:18

I remember the first time I went on Later. I didn't know much about the programme.

0:12:180:12:21

I went on there... It was a different kind of thing for me.

0:12:210:12:24

One of the first TV things I'd done.

0:12:240:12:26

I was quite nervous, to be fair. I just got on with it.

0:12:260:12:31

But it was just different being in that studio with all the people surrounding you.

0:12:310:12:37

It was weird.

0:12:370:12:38

-HE RAPS

-Brand new day new opportunities

0:12:380:12:40

What can I say?

0:12:400:12:41

I plan to make my pay...

0:12:410:12:44

The more and more I did that show, the more I liked it, the more I realised how respected it was.

0:12:440:12:49

I realised it was a really, really good thing to do

0:12:490:12:53

as I was getting further and bigger in my career ad well. It was always nice to go there

0:12:530:12:57

at a point where I'd crossed over, as well as before I crossed over.

0:12:570:13:01

HE RAPS I wake up every day its a daydream

Everything in my life ain't what it seems

0:13:100:13:12

I wake up just to go back to sleep

0:13:120:13:14

I act real shallow but I'm in too deep

0:13:140:13:15

And all I care about is sex and violence

0:13:150:13:17

A heavy bass line is my kind of silence

0:13:170:13:19

Everybody says I got to get a grip

0:13:190:13:20

But I let sanity give me the slip

0:13:200:13:23

Some people think I'm bonkers

0:13:230:13:25

But I just think I'm free

Man, I'm just living my life

0:15:290:15:31

APPLAUSE AND CHEERING

0:15:310:15:34

I always think of Later as a sort of dating agency

0:15:340:15:37

for the musically desperate. It's where, as it were, meet new people.

0:15:370:15:41

And... there's been a sequence of...all the way through

0:15:410:15:45

just girls you see for the first time...Amy Winehouse.

0:15:450:15:48

I remember a fantastic girl called Priscilla Ahn...

0:15:480:15:51

And...Corinne Bailey Rae.

0:15:510:15:54

Recently, last year, there was a girl called Melody Gardot who I didn't know.

0:15:540:15:59

I'm completely obsessed by this bit of footage.

0:15:590:16:02

There are about 9,000 hits on YouTube

0:16:020:16:05

and I think I'm 8,000 of them. I send them to all of my friends in America.

0:16:050:16:08

If you want to feel that sort of frisson and magic of what music can be like,

0:16:080:16:14

and what girls can be like,

0:16:140:16:17

all the sort of Trans-Atlantic

0:16:170:16:20

sexiness and gorgeousness of a smoky room,

0:16:200:16:24

then watch this extraordinary three-minute clip.

0:16:240:16:27

And it's Later in its perfection.

0:16:270:16:30

# How was I to know

0:16:300:16:35

# That this was always only just a little game to you?

0:16:350:16:45

# All the time I felt you gave your heart

0:16:460:16:50

# I thought that I would do the same for you

0:16:500:16:57

# Tell the truth I think I should have seen it coming from a mile away

0:16:570:17:09

# When the words you say are,

0:17:090:17:14

# "Baby, I'm a fool who thinks it's cool to fall in love"

0:17:140:17:30

# If I gave a thought to fascination

0:17:300:17:33

# I would know it wasn't right to care

0:17:330:17:38

# Logic doesn't seem to mind that I am fascinated by a love affair

0:17:380:17:45

# Oh-oh

0:17:450:17:46

# Still my heart would benefit from a little tenderness from time to time

0:17:460:17:54

# But never mind,

0:17:540:17:56

# Cos, Baby, I'm a fool who thinks it's cool to fall in love

0:17:560:18:03

# Oh-oh-oh-oh

0:18:060:18:14

# Oh-oh-oh-oh Oh-oh-oh-oh... #

0:18:140:18:21

SHE SCATS

0:18:210:18:24

# Baby, I should hold on just a moment

0:18:380:18:42

# And be sure it's not for vanity

0:18:420:18:46

# Oh, look me in the eye and tell me love is never based upon insanity

0:18:460:18:54

# Hear the way my heart is beating Hurry up, the moment's fleeting

0:18:560:19:05

# Oh-oh... Kiss me now Don't ask me how

0:19:050:19:16

# Cos, Baby, I'm a fool who thinks it's cool to fall

0:19:160:19:26

Baby, I'm a fool who thinks it's cool to fall

0:19:260:19:30

# And I would never tell

0:19:300:19:33

# If you became a fool and fell in lo-ove... #

0:19:330:19:53

APPLAUSE AND CHEERING

0:20:020:20:04

I was actually intimidated and scared the first time, cos we had to lead the riff, I think.

0:20:040:20:09

You know when they start with a riff

0:20:090:20:11

and James started doing Back In Black.

0:20:110:20:14

I don't know. I felt... All of a sudden I felt, "I'm not a musician, I don't deserve to be here."

0:20:160:20:21

I did feel quite intimidated...

0:20:210:20:23

to the point that it kind of make you angry, really.

0:20:230:20:29

But sometimes that can make for a better performance.

0:20:290:20:33

The last time we were on when we did Peeled Apples off Journal For Plague Lovers,

0:20:370:20:41

that felt really rewarding

0:20:410:20:46

cos we'd never been on the show with Richey in the band.

0:20:460:20:49

We'd always wanted to, but it never happened,

0:20:490:20:51

so the fact we were playing his lyrics on Later...

0:20:510:20:54

We did Jackie Collins and Peeled Apples ..that felt really...

0:20:540:20:58

Like some kind of vindication really cos his words were, you know, as important

0:20:580:21:03

if not more than the music.

0:21:030:21:04

# ..Riderless horses

0:21:040:21:07

# On Chomsky's Camelot... #

0:21:070:21:10

It is one of those music shows that certain things just inspire you, really.

0:21:100:21:15

The Libertines, really, was the big bolt from the blue.

0:21:150:21:18

I fell in love with them just from the first picture, really, from the tunics,

0:21:180:21:23

but James was doing Ocean Spray on there with a trumpet player, Know Your Enemy was coming out,

0:21:230:21:29

and he called me up to say, "Yeah, they're the boys," you know.

0:21:290:21:34

You could just feel something, some raggedness, some romance,

0:21:340:21:38

some nihilism, some vanity, and that really came through on the TV as well.

0:21:380:21:42

# You're walking like you never seen the light

0:22:070:22:09

# You're walking like it every night

0:22:090:22:13

# But I've never seen you dance and I've never heard you sing

0:22:130:22:16

-# So how can it mean

-a single thing

0:22:160:22:21

# It's all so rudimentary

0:22:240:22:25

# You're talking like you're handy in a fight

0:22:340:22:38

# You talk about it every night

0:22:380:22:41

# But I've never seen those flowers in the barrel of your gun

0:22:410:22:45

-# All I've ever

-seen you do is run

0:22:450:22:50

# It's all so rudimentary

0:22:520:22:54

# Well tell me baby How does it feel?

0:22:540:22:59

# I know you like the roll of the limousine wheel

# But then I stop to think I ask my self why

0:23:350:23:40

# It's all so rudimentary

0:23:420:23:45

# I've no homestead but through these hearts I will roam

0:23:490:23:53

0:25:080:25:12

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:25:180:25:20

The secret ingredient is probably the fact that it doesn't pander to any trends,

0:25:210:25:27

it kind of transcends trends. It's nothing to do with fashion,

0:25:270:25:30

so nobody's on their guard, thinking,

0:25:300:25:32

"Oh, God, if I don't get this right, my career's finished."

0:25:320:25:36

It really is about the music and really is about celebrating the artist.

0:25:360:25:40

That must be a great feeling, to be a musician,

0:25:400:25:44

and suddenly not have to think about what people think about you.

0:25:440:25:48

Cos there, you're not judged on anything apart from...

0:25:480:25:51

"You're good anyway, that's why you're here."

0:25:510:25:54

I'm a black music fan, so Billy Preston, before he died,

0:25:540:25:58

doing That's The Way God Planned It, I remember singing along and swaying along to that.

0:25:580:26:03

I would have got me lighter out, but I don't smoke.

0:26:030:26:06

# Why can't we be humble like the good Lord said?

0:26:060:26:12

# He promised to exalt us But low is the way

0:26:120:26:17

# How can men be so greedy

0:26:180:26:21

# When there's so much left?

0:26:210:26:25

# All things are God-given

0:26:250:26:27

# And they all have been blessed

0:26:270:26:29

# That's the way God planned it

0:26:290:26:33

# That's the way God wants it to be

0:26:330:26:36

# That's the way God planned it

0:26:430:26:46

# That's the way God wants it to be

0:26:460:26:49

# Let not your heart be troubled

0:26:560:26:59

# Let mourning, sobbing cease

0:26:590:27:02

# Just learn how to help one another

0:27:030:27:05

# And live in perfect peace

0:27:050:27:08

# If we all could be humble

0:27:080:27:10

# Like the good Lord said

0:27:120:27:14

# He said he would exalt us all

0:27:140:27:18

# But low is the way

0:27:180:27:19

# That's the way God planned it

0:27:190:27:23

# That's the way God wants it to be

0:27:230:27:27

# Yeah

0:27:270:27:28

# That's the way God planned it

0:27:320:27:36

# That's the way God wants it to be

0:27:360:27:39

# Yeah... #

0:27:410:27:44

Go on, Jools!

0:27:480:27:50

Yeah.

0:27:500:27:52

JOOLS AND BILLY PLAY A CALL-AND-RESPONSE SEQUENCE

0:27:520:27:55

Do that again, I'll do it again!

0:28:060:28:10

Yeah!

0:28:290:28:31

# I hope you get the message

0:28:320:28:34

# When you want somebody, well

0:28:360:28:38

# You may not understand me

0:28:390:28:41

# But Billy will love you still

0:28:410:28:44

# That's the way God planned me

0:28:440:28:47

# That's the way God wants me to be

0:28:470:28:50

# Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah

0:28:500:28:53

# That's the way God planned it

0:28:570:29:00

# That's the way God want it to be

0:29:000:29:04

# Come on, come on

0:29:040:29:06

# That's the way God planned it

0:29:100:29:13

# That's the way God wants it to be

0:29:130:29:17

# Yeah, all right. #

0:29:170:29:20

Yeah!

0:29:230:29:25

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:29:250:29:28

One of the times that I remember SO clearly

0:29:310:29:33

was when, I think, Datsuns were playing, also Coldplay were there,

0:29:330:29:36

and Foo Fighters. It was like rock wars that night,

0:29:360:29:39

everyone was trying to be really loud,

0:29:390:29:41

with the exception of Coldplay, obviously, they don't do rock wars.

0:29:410:29:45

They do it in their own special way.

0:29:450:29:47

I remember standing really close to Foo Fighters

0:29:470:29:49

when they were playing, and the volume wasn't turned up to 11,

0:29:490:29:53

it was to 12, it was that loud, just being blown away by the volume.

0:29:530:29:57

And it was just such an occasion, it was really exciting,

0:29:570:30:00

and you can see how the bands play off each other

0:30:000:30:02

and how it really, really matters to them, how they come across.

0:30:020:30:06

I think that's one of my favourite moments.

0:30:060:30:08

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:30:080:30:10

# All my life I've been searching for somethin'

0:30:190:30:21

# Somethin' never comes Never leads to nothin'

0:30:210:30:24

# Nothin' satisfies Gettin' close

0:30:240:30:27

# Closer to the prize

0:30:270:30:28

# At the end of the rope

0:30:280:30:30

# All night long I dream of the day

0:30:300:30:32

# When it comes around

0:30:320:30:34

# And it's taken away

0:30:340:30:36

# Leaves me with the feelin' that I feel the most

0:30:360:30:38

# Feel it come to life

0:30:380:30:39

# When I see your ghost, yay!

0:30:390:30:41

# Calm down, don't you resist

0:30:520:30:54

# You've such a delicate wrist

0:30:540:30:58

# And if I give it a twist

0:30:580:31:01

# Somethin' to hold

0:31:010:31:02

# When I lose my grip

0:31:020:31:04

# Will I find something in there

0:31:040:31:07

# To give it just what it needs?

0:31:070:31:09

# Another reason to bleed

0:31:090:31:12

# One by one, hidden up my sleeve

0:31:120:31:15

# One by one, hidden up my sleeve

0:31:150:31:18

# Hey, don't let it go to waste

0:31:180:31:21

# I love it but I hate the taste

0:31:210:31:23

# Weight keeping me down

0:31:230:31:28

# Hey, don't let it go to waste

# I love it but I hate the taste

0:31:310:31:33

# Weight keeping me down, oh yeah!

0:31:330:31:38

# Will I find a believer?

0:31:430:31:46

# Another one who believes

0:31:460:31:49

# Another one to deceive

0:31:490:31:52

# Over and over, down on my knees

0:31:520:31:55

# If I get any closer

0:31:550:31:58

# And if you open up wide

0:31:580:32:00

# And if you let me inside

0:32:000:32:03

# On and on I got nothin' to hide

0:32:030:32:06

# On and on I got nothin' to hide

0:32:060:32:09

# Hey, don't let it go to waste

0:32:090:32:12

# I love it but I hate the taste

0:32:120:32:14

# Weight keeping me down

0:32:140:32:19

# Hey don't let it go to waste

0:32:190:32:21

0:34:220:34:25

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:34:260:34:29

It's absolutely the Holy Grail.

0:34:300:34:32

I've been watching Jools for years and loving it,

0:34:320:34:36

and imagining that maybe, one day, I'd get on it.

0:34:360:34:38

So I got the call, had no idea who else was on it,

0:34:380:34:43

literally had 24 hours to get down from the north, down to London,

0:34:430:34:48

ran in my flat, had a shower, jumped in a cab,

0:34:480:34:51

got the studios, eh...

0:34:510:34:55

and I was almost just pushed straight on!

0:34:550:34:58

Erm, you know, hadn't...

0:34:580:34:59

Hadn't thought about what I was going to wear,

0:34:590:35:02

I ended up with like jumper sleeves on my legs!

0:35:020:35:05

I thought, "They're really cool!" Like, hiking boots,

0:35:050:35:08

jumper sleeves, a little Top Shop skirt,

0:35:080:35:13

a little knackered old black T-shirt and just, you know, on, done.

0:35:130:35:17

And I'm just, thank God, really good...

0:35:170:35:20

Like, much better under pressure.

0:35:200:35:21

If it's a rehearsal, I'll make a mistake,

0:35:210:35:24

but I know that I'm better under pressure,

0:35:240:35:26

so I was like, "Come on, just be fierce, do your thing,

0:35:260:35:30

"don't think about it."

0:35:300:35:31

And it's funny watching it, cos I can just see my face...

0:35:310:35:35

I'm not really aware of anything around me,

0:35:350:35:38

I'm just, you know...TCB!

0:35:380:35:42

And now, let's introduce somebody new making their television debut.

0:35:420:35:46

From St Andrews in Scotland, please welcome KT Tunstall!

My mum and dad were watching and my dad said that he jumped round the living room, just going,

0:39:330:39:38

"She's bloody done it!"

0:39:380:39:40

And now, going to the States and Australia and Japan,

0:39:420:39:48

everywhere I go, a few interviews, they'll say,

0:39:480:39:53

"So, you broke in on the Jools Holland show,

0:39:530:39:56

"what an amazing performance,

"it was the platform that started your career,"

0:39:580:40:01

and it really was, so all hail. It was such a special opportunity.

0:40:010:40:07

Thank you.

0:40:070:40:09

If you've just joined us, I'm delighted to be celebrating

0:40:090:40:13

having made 250 Later... With Jools Holland shows.

0:40:130:40:16

As well as having great bands and artists,

0:40:160:40:19

we also have fantastic collaborations.

0:40:190:40:21

Here's one from a recent show

0:40:210:40:23

that features the wonderful Smokey Robinson

0:40:230:40:26

and also a sensational guitar solo from Eric Clapton.

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:43:580:44:01

I didn't even know what Jools Holland was, cos I didn't live here

0:44:010:44:05

and also, I don't watch TV. so the whole thing was like...

0:44:050:44:10

kinda surreal for me, and I didn't know none of the bands.

0:44:100:44:14

And you know how they all have the stage?

0:44:140:44:17

I said, "Where am I gonna be?" "Oh, they're just gonna shove you out in the middle of the floor."

0:44:170:44:22

So...I thought it was gonna be a disaster, you know?

0:44:220:44:26

And, er...but everyone was so nice to me there,

0:44:260:44:31

and I just figured, "Oh, well, I'll play," cos I just play an old, beat-up guitar.

0:44:310:44:35

So I thought, you know, if it's the end of my career,

0:44:350:44:39

that don't matter cos I haven't started it yet.

0:44:390:44:42

But I've watched it on the TV, you know?

0:44:420:44:45

And I've caught it a couple of times where it was just so, like...

0:44:450:44:49

One time, I think I turned it on and I got Elbow on there.

0:44:490:44:53

And I really liked them, it was just majestic to see them on there.

0:44:530:44:58

# Drinking in the morning sun

0:45:160:45:19

# Blinking in the morning sun

0:45:220:45:25

# Shaking off a heavy one

0:45:270:45:31

# Yeah, heavy like a loaded gun

0:45:330:45:37

# What made me behave that way?

0:45:390:45:43

# Using words I never say

0:45:450:45:48

# I can only think it must be love

0:45:500:45:54

# Oh, anyway

0:45:560:46:00

# It's looking like a beautiful day

0:46:000:46:06

# Someone tell me how I feel

0:46:090:46:12

# It's silly wrong, but vivid right

0:46:140:46:18

# Oh, kiss me like a final meal

0:46:200:46:24

# Yeah, kiss me like we die tonight

0:46:260:46:31

# Cos holy cow, I love your eyes

0:46:310:46:35

# And only now I see the light

0:46:380:46:41

# Yeah, lying with you half awake

0:46:430:46:48

# Well, anyway

0:46:480:46:53

# It's looking like a beautiful day

0:46:530:47:00

# When my face is chamois creased

0:47:070:47:10

# If you think I wink, I did

0:47:130:47:16

# Laugh politely at repeats

0:47:190:47:22

# Oh, kiss me when my lips are thin

0:47:240:47:28

# Cos holy cow, I love your eyes

0:47:310:47:34

# And only now I see the light

0:47:360:47:40

# Yeah, lying with me half awake

0:47:420:47:46

# Stumbling over what to say

0:47:460:47:48

# Well, anyway

0:47:480:47:51

# It's looking like a beautiful day

0:47:510:47:57

# So throw those curtains wide

0:48:050:48:11

# One day like this a year would see me right

0:48:110:48:17

# Throw those curtains wide

0:48:180:48:22

# One day like this a year would see me right

0:48:580:49:02

# Holy cow, I love your eyes

0:49:040:49:07

# And only now I see the light

0:49:100:49:15

# Throw those curtains wide

0:49:450:49:52

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:49:540:49:57

The one performance that really sticks out for me...

0:50:070:50:10

Well, one of them, cos there were loads.

0:50:100:50:12

I'm going to stick to my sort of genre though.

0:50:120:50:14

Which is obviously soul, R&B and hip-hop.

0:50:140:50:17

It was Mary J Blige, No More Drama.

0:50:170:50:20

For the casual viewer, they wouldn't really know the history of Mary J.

0:50:200:50:23

She's somebody who has absolutely... all her material comes from her life,

0:50:230:50:29

and a fan of Mary J would know that she's always been unhappy,

0:50:290:50:34

miserable... You know! Pained. She brought the blues back into R&B,

0:50:340:50:40

in a sense, in a way that no other female artist was doing at the time

0:50:400:50:44

in the early '90s. Then there came a pivotal moment in her career,

0:50:440:50:48

where she changed. The drugs had gone, the bad relationships,

0:50:480:50:52

And Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis wrote the song for her, No More Drama.

0:50:520:50:55

And it's quite worthy, you know, when I first heard it, I thought,

0:50:550:50:59

"OK." I heard it on record, I thought I understood the record,

0:50:590:51:02

but it means nothing on record compared to the performance.

0:51:020:51:05

This woman, whenever she performs this song,

0:51:050:51:08

you just watch a person feeling the music.

0:51:080:51:11

Mary J took it to church on Later.

0:51:110:51:14

The only thing she didn't do was break down in tears,

0:51:140:51:17

she normally breaks down in tears when she does it.

0:51:170:51:19

It was one of the...not pitch perfect, but most emotive performances

0:51:190:51:23

I've ever seen on Jools Holland.

0:51:230:51:25

And you can see the crowd are in awe at the end,

0:51:250:51:29

because very rarely does an artist truly give it up

0:51:290:51:33

the way she did with No More Drama. It was magnificent.

0:51:330:51:36

# Whoa, whoa, whoa

0:51:360:51:39

# Ooh-ooh-ooh

0:51:410:51:44

# Oh yeah, no more

0:51:460:51:50

# Ooh

0:51:560:51:57

# Ooh-ooh-ooh

0:52:010:52:03

# Oh yeah, no more

0:52:060:52:11

# Broken heart again

0:52:140:52:16

# Another lesson learned

0:52:160:52:19

# Better know your friends

0:52:190:52:21

# Or else you will get burned

0:52:210:52:24

# Gotta count on me

0:52:240:52:26

# Cos I can guarantee that I'll be fine

0:52:260:52:31

0:52:420:52:46

# No one's gonna make me hurt again

0:52:460:52:50

# Why'd I play the fool

0:52:520:52:55

# Go through ups and downs

0:52:550:52:58

# Knowing all the time

0:52:580:53:00

# You wouldn't be around

0:53:000:53:03

# But maybe I liked the stress

0:53:030:53:05

# Cos I was young and restless

0:53:050:53:08

# But that was long ago

0:53:080:53:10

# I don't wanna cry no more

0:53:100:53:12

-No more tears, I'm tired of crying every night

0:53:300:53:36

-No more fears, I really don't wanna fight

0:53:360:53:41

-# (No drama)

-No more drama in my life

-(No more in my life)

0:53:410:53:44

# I don't ever wanna hurt again

0:53:440:53:48

# Wanna speak my mind

0:53:480:53:51

# Oh it feels so good

0:53:530:53:56

# When you let go

0:53:560:53:58

# Of all the drama in your life

0:53:580:54:01

# Now you're free from all the pain

0:54:010:54:03

# Free from all the games

0:54:030:54:06

# Free from all the stress

0:54:060:54:08

# To find your happiness

0:54:080:54:11

# I don't know

0:54:110:54:13

# Only God knows where the story ends for me

0:54:130:54:18

# But I know where the story begins

0:54:180:54:21

# It's up to us to choose

0:54:210:54:24

# Whether we win or lose

0:54:240:54:26

# And I choose to win

0:54:260:54:29

-# (No more pain)

-No more pain, no more pain, tired of hurting

0:54:290:54:34

-# (No more games)

-Tired of you playin' games with my mind

0:54:340:54:39

-# (No drama)

-No more drama in my life

-(No more in my life)

0:54:390:54:45

-# (No more tears)

-No more tears, no more crying every night

0:54:490:54:53

-# (No more fears)

0:55:340:55:39

-# (No more drama)

-You demons get out of my face, get out my life

0:55:390:55:44

-# (No more drama)

-I'm about to lose my mind

0:55:440:55:46

# Lord help me, help me sing

0:55:460:55:49

0:55:570:56:03

# No more, no more, no more

0:56:030:56:07

# I need peace of mind, peace of mind

0:56:070:56:11

# And I need, oh, at night to sleep

0:56:110:56:15

# I need to know that we are free

0:56:150:56:18

# Oh, no, oh, no, oh

0:56:180:56:22

# Oh, no, no, no, no, no

0:56:220:56:27

# No more drama, everybody

0:56:330:56:35

# See, I know that we all been scorned

0:56:370:56:40

# But we gonna try to heal together, people

0:56:400:56:45

# Come together, we need to, yeah, yeah, yeah. #

0:56:450:56:50

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:56:530:56:56

Thank you.

0:56:580:57:00

I don't know, how many different things have I done on there?

0:57:000:57:03

I've done...started off with Blur.

0:57:030:57:05

# All your life you're dreaming... #

0:57:050:57:07

And then I played with Afel and Mali Music.

0:57:070:57:12

And then with Kano.

0:57:160:57:19

# Now sing along!

0:57:190:57:21

# La la la la la

0:57:210:57:23

# La la la la la

0:57:230:57:26

And then with the Monkey Orchestra.

0:57:260:57:29

Er... I don't know if I actually...

0:57:310:57:35

I did play one song, but I spent quite a lot of the time

0:57:350:57:39

sitting at the back with a giant panda.

0:57:390:57:42

The Good, the Bad and the Queen as well.

0:57:450:57:47

And most recently with Gorillaz. So that's quite a few things.

0:57:500:57:53

And just a last question, Damon, thank you so much.

0:57:530:57:56

Thank you very much for letting me play all those times.

0:57:560:58:01

# Love, electricity, shock wave central

1:02:121:02:18

# Whoo-oo-ooh!

1:02:181:02:20

# Work it out right now! #

1:02:231:02:26

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

1:02:261:02:29

What makes the show work is putting together the very different groups,

1:02:311:02:36

so you might have a solo woman country and western singer

1:02:361:02:42

from Nashville, along with a rock'n'roll band

1:02:421:02:46

or a young British band,

1:02:461:02:48

and it's the combinations, I think, that work.

1:02:481:02:51

And there's always the fact that you've usually got, like,

1:02:511:02:56

six bands around the kind of edge of a circle,

1:02:561:03:00

and they're watching the other bands, so you've got this

1:03:001:03:03

kind of mutual respect going on all the time,

1:03:031:03:06

so it's fascinating to see one musician applauding another musician.

1:03:061:03:10

So I think that's what really makes it work, I think it's the only show

1:03:101:03:14

that puts together different kinds of music,

1:03:141:03:17

and that's because of Jools' general interest in music, I think.

1:03:171:03:22

He has such a broad range of interests.

1:03:221:03:25

And the interviews, and when he plays piano

1:03:251:03:29

and someone sings a song just with him,

1:03:291:03:33

and then they talk, that's always fascinating.

1:03:331:03:36

-Rehab.

-Yeah.

-When did you write that one?

-Um, I wrote that...

1:03:361:03:39

in February or March, in New York, with Mark Ronson.

1:03:391:03:44

And we were just walking down the street,

1:03:441:03:46

and I sang the hook, and he burst out laughing. He said, "Who's that?"

1:03:461:03:49

I said, "I just made it up!" And he was like, "That would be really cool."

1:03:491:03:53

So I said, "Let's go to the studio now, we can knock it out in an hour."

1:03:531:03:57

-You went straight there and did it, just like that?

-Yeah, literally.

-Your voice has become

1:03:571:04:01

-more powerful, your songwriting has become stronger, do you feel that happening?

-Definitely.

1:04:011:04:06

I'm very proud of this record and I feel that unless I could have bettered myself, I might as well

1:04:061:04:11

-give up.

-And it's a different vibration,

1:04:111:04:14

-it's got a sort of Motown groove.

-Yes.

1:04:141:04:16

What's the first music that you listened to?

1:04:161:04:19

A lot of jazz, really, a lot of Sarah Vaughan,

1:04:191:04:21

loads of Sarah Vaughan songs - "April In Paris",

1:04:211:04:24

but I think one of my earliest memories is listening to my granddad

1:04:241:04:28

play "Tenderly", my Pop Larry, God rest his soul. "Tenderly".

1:04:281:04:32

Did your granddad play an instrument or did he play the record?

1:04:321:04:35

-No, he'd play it off the record.

-Do you know how to sing that?

1:04:351:04:39

-Yes.

-Would you give that a go?

-Yeah!

-Shall we give "Tenderly" a go?

1:04:391:04:43

Well, I think we should get a tempo, hang on.

1:04:431:04:47

Could you give us a bit of this?

1:04:471:04:49

# The evening breeze caressed the trees tenderly

1:04:591:05:06

# The evening breeze caressed the trees tenderly

1:05:081:05:15

# I can't forget how two hearts met, breathlessly

1:05:151:05:23

# Your arms opened wide

1:05:231:05:26

# And closed me inside

1:05:261:05:31

# You took my love, you took my heart so tenderly. #

1:05:311:05:38

-CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

-Aah, your granddad would love that.

1:05:431:05:46

-We love it too. Amy Winehouse!

-Thanks for having me.

1:05:461:05:50

Jimmy Cliff. I saw him. I went in for his rehearsals.

1:05:501:05:53

I was standing as close as what I am to you,

1:05:531:05:55

watching him sing Many Rivers To Cross. That was pretty special.

1:05:551:05:59

# Many rivers I've crossed

1:05:591:06:03

# But just where to begin

1:06:031:06:07

# Playing for time? #

1:06:081:06:11

I saw Wild Beast on there. That was the first time I'd heard them.

1:06:111:06:15

It was... Quite often there are new artists, which is always good.

1:06:151:06:21

There is so little music TV on, as everyone knows.

1:06:211:06:24

We'd really suffer without it, really.

1:06:241:06:28

# Watch me, watch me

1:06:281:06:30

# Ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh...

1:06:331:06:35

# Oh-oh-oh... #

1:06:351:06:39

'92 was the first time I done it,

1:06:391:06:41

when my first solo album come out.

1:06:411:06:42

I pretty much did it every time I put a record out, really,

1:06:421:06:45

which is quite a few times over the last 250 years, whatever it's been.

1:06:451:06:49

# I don't care how long this lasts

1:07:101:07:14

# We have no future Oh, we have no past

1:07:141:07:19

# I write this now while I'm in control

1:07:191:07:23

# I choose the words and how the melody goes

1:07:231:07:27

# Along winding streets We walked hand in hand

1:07:271:07:31

# How I long for the sharp wind To take my breath away again

1:07:311:07:36

# I run my fingers through your hair

1:07:361:07:41

# Hair like a wheat field I'd run through

1:07:411:07:44

# That I'd run through

1:07:441:07:47

# And, I miss you so

1:07:471:07:49

# Oh, I miss you so

1:07:501:07:53

# Now you're gone

1:07:561:07:58

# I feel so alone

1:07:581:08:00

# Ooh, said I miss you so

1:08:001:08:04

# I do

1:08:041:08:05

# Sent you a flower A sunflower bright

1:08:141:08:18

# Cos you cloud my days Messing up my nights

1:08:181:08:23

# Right the way up to the top of your head

1:08:231:08:27

# Sun-shower kisses I felt we had

1:08:271:08:31

# I miss you so

1:08:341:08:35

# Yeah, darling, I miss you so

1:08:371:08:40

# Now you're gone

1:08:421:08:44

# I feel so alone

1:08:441:08:47

# Wo-oh-oh, said I miss you so

1:08:471:08:50

# Well, I miss you so

1:09:111:09:13

# Oh, darling, I miss you so

1:09:151:09:18

# Now you're gone

1:09:201:09:22

# I feel so alone

1:09:221:09:25

# Wo-oh-oh, said I miss you so

1:09:251:09:28

# OH! All I gotta do

1:09:371:09:40

# Is think of you

1:09:401:09:42

Wo-oh-oh and I miss you so

1:09:431:09:46

# Baby, I

1:09:471:09:49

# I'm afraid to say why

1:09:491:09:51

# Oh-oh-oh, that I miss you so

1:09:521:09:55

# I do

1:09:551:09:56

# Baby, I

1:10:051:10:06

# I'm afraid to say why

1:10:061:10:09

# Wo-oh-oh, that I miss you so

1:10:101:10:12

# I do. #

1:10:121:10:14

I think whether it's politics, sport, whatever it is, what you need

1:10:421:10:46

for great communicators is a combination

1:10:461:10:49

of real knowledge, proper knowledge,

1:10:491:10:51

and enthusiasm. When it comes to music, no-one beats Jools Holland

1:10:511:10:55

for that. He has kept really good, serious popular music,

1:10:551:11:01

a big spread of different performers and bands, on our screens

1:11:011:11:06

for a very long time, which nobody else has done.

1:11:061:11:08

Lily Allen, welcome to our show!

1:11:081:11:10

When I was in, Sonic Youth were on and also the great Lily Allen,

1:11:101:11:14

and I got at least four or five kisses from her, which was,

1:11:141:11:18

I think, my career highlight of all time. Thanks, Jools.

1:11:181:11:21

# I wanna be rich and I want lots of money

1:11:211:11:24

# I don't care about clever I don't care about funny

1:11:241:11:28

# I want loads of clothes And fuck-loads of diamonds

1:11:281:11:32

# I heard people die while they're trying to find them

1:11:321:11:35

# I'll take my clothes off and it will be shameless

1:11:351:11:39

# Cos everyone knows that's how you get famous

1:11:391:11:42

# I look at the Sun and I look in the Mirror

1:11:421:11:46

# I'm on the right track Yeah, I'm on to a winner

1:11:461:11:49

# I don't know what's right and what's real any more

1:11:491:11:55

# I don't know how I'm meant to feel

1:11:561:12:01

# Any mo-o-o-o-ore

1:12:011:12:04

# When do you think it will all become clear?

1:12:041:12:08

# I'm being taken over by the fe-e-e-e-e-e-ear

1:12:111:12:18

# Life's about filmstars and less about mothers

1:12:241:12:29

# It's all about fast cars and cussing each other

1:12:291:12:32

# But it doesn't matter cos I'm packing plastic

1:12:321:12:36

# And that's what makes my life so fucking fantastic

1:12:361:12:40

# I am a weapon of massive consumption

1:12:401:12:43

# It's not my fault It's how I'm programmed to function

1:12:431:12:46

# I look at the Sun and I look in the Mirror

1:12:461:12:50

# I'm on the right track Yeah, I'm on to a winner

1:12:501:12:53

# I don't know what's right and what's real any more

1:12:531:13:00

# I don't know how I'm meant to feel

1:13:011:13:05

# Any mo-o-o-o-ore

1:13:051:13:08

# When do you think it will all become clear?

1:13:081:13:13

# I'm being taken over by the fe-e-e-e-e-e-ear

1:13:151:13:22

# Forget about guns And forget ammunition

1:13:371:13:40

# Cos I'm killing them all on my own little mission

1:13:401:13:44

# I'm not a saint but I'm not a sinner

1:13:441:13:47

# And everything's cool as long as I'm getting thinner

1:13:471:13:51

# I don't know what's right and what's real any more

1:13:511:13:57

# I don't know how I'm meant to feel

1:13:591:14:02

# Any mo-o-o-o-ore

1:14:021:14:05

# When do you think it will all become clear?

1:14:051:14:10

# I'm being taken over by the fe-e-e-e-e-e-ear. #

1:14:131:14:19

APPLAUSE AND CHEERING

1:14:191:14:21

For me, the whole experience of watching Later is what I don't expect to see.

1:14:261:14:30

That's part of why I watch it.

1:14:301:14:31

I tune in to watch the bands I'm a fan of,

1:14:311:14:34

cos I know they'll perform well, stakes are high on the show,

1:14:341:14:38

but also I get to watch classic performances from...

1:14:381:14:42

timeless musicians who've been around a long time.

1:14:421:14:44

A lot of my favourite performances are strange things like Michael McDonald

1:14:441:14:49

and stuff like that because I've never seen them sing before

1:14:491:14:53

and watching him and Jools do a duet is something really special.

1:14:531:14:57

# ..Some day, somewhere

1:14:571:15:00

# She will return... #

1:15:011:15:03

But for me, on a rock level,

1:15:031:15:05

the one that stood out as soon as I had to think about this

1:15:051:15:09

was At The Drive-In.

1:15:091:15:11

They did One Arm Scissor and that was in 2000, I think,

1:15:111:15:15

and that was a really game-changing moment for rock and roll.

1:15:151:15:21

Because Later, then, as it is today, was established as the place to go

1:15:211:15:27

and perform for bands, and to watch as a fan.

1:15:271:15:30

Up to that point... We'd been coming off the back of the Britpop thing

1:15:301:15:34

and we were in a pop whirlwind. It was Backstreet Boys, Britney Spears, Westlife and Boyzone

1:15:341:15:41

and there was singer-songwriters in the form of Travis and stuff,

1:15:411:15:44

but no-one was really kicking the door down.

1:15:441:15:47

And when I saw that performance, and I knew the song and the band,

1:15:471:15:50

but to me, it must have felt like watching MC5,

1:15:501:15:53

or something, you know? It had that incredible punk rock spirit

1:15:531:15:57

with this amazing tune that was rumbling underneath

1:15:571:16:01

but with a total disregard to the craft of the song

1:16:011:16:05

and everything thrown into the performance.

1:16:051:16:07

Somehow that benefited the song.

1:16:071:16:10

I don't quite know how, it's detuned everywhere and they miss cue-points, everything's shambolic,

1:16:101:16:16

but the spirit of that performance stood out to me as

1:16:161:16:19

one of the great Later moments.

1:16:191:16:21

# Yes, this is a campaign Slithered entrails in the cargo bay

1:16:311:16:35

# Neutered is the vastness Hallow vacuum check the oxygen tanks

1:16:401:16:44

# They hibernate But have they kissed the ground Pucker up and kiss the asphalt now

1:16:491:16:53

PIANO PLAYS

1:20:241:20:27

Can me mate have his chair back please?

1:20:271:20:30

My first time on Jools Holland was in 2006

1:20:301:20:33

and I'd only just been signed.

1:20:331:20:35

They picked me... You know when they have the new talent?

1:20:351:20:39

They did it with KT Tunstall and stuff like that.

1:20:391:20:42

So I did that and it was really, really frightening.

1:20:421:20:45

I think someone pulled out and it was... Oh, Bjork was on it,

1:20:451:20:49

Paul McCartney was on it and it was my first time being in a TV studio,

1:20:491:20:53

let alone actually being on TV.

1:20:531:20:54

I have the fondest memories of that. Meeting Jools,

1:20:541:20:59

the hallways, the dressing rooms, the floor,

1:20:591:21:02

it was so much bigger... I always thought it was tiny

1:21:021:21:05

cos everyone says studios are never as big as they look on TV and it was just massive.

1:21:051:21:09

It was just amazing. It was the best night ever. When I started,

1:21:091:21:12

my guitar wasn't on, so I thought I'd have to do it again,

1:21:121:21:15

and everyone else got cleared and didn't have to do their performance again

1:21:151:21:19

but I was frightened I'd have to sing in front of a Beatle again!

1:21:191:21:23

Now, making her TV debut,

1:21:231:21:26

we welcome, from Brixton, Adele.

1:21:261:21:30

# Daydreamer

# Sitting on the seat

1:21:461:21:48

# He is a real lover

1:21:501:21:54

# Making up the past

1:21:541:21:57

1:22:131:22:15

# He's the subject of their talk

1:22:151:22:17

# He would be hard to chase

1:22:171:22:22

# But good to catch and he could change the world

1:22:221:22:25

1:22:251:22:28

# You can find him

1:22:381:22:42

1:22:511:22:56

# And he will feel like

1:22:571:22:59

# He's been there for

1:22:591:23:02

# Hours...

1:23:021:23:06

# And you can tell that he'll be there

1:23:061:23:10

# For life...

1:23:101:23:16

# Daydreamer

1:23:241:23:27

# With eyes that make you melt

1:23:271:23:29

# He lends his coat for shelter

1:23:291:23:32

# Plus he's there for you when he shouldn't be

1:23:321:23:36

# But he stays all the same

1:23:361:23:39

# Waits for you then sees you through

1:23:391:23:42

# There's no way I

1:23:501:23:55

# Could describe him

1:23:551:23:59

# But I'll say he's

1:23:591:24:04

# Just what I'm hoping for...

1:24:041:24:11

# But I will find him...

1:24:191:24:23

# Sitting on my doorstep...

1:24:231:24:28

# Wai...ting

1:24:281:24:32

# Fo-o-o-o-or a surprise

1:24:321:24:36

# And he will feel like

1:24:381:24:40

# He's been there for

1:24:401:24:42

# Hours...

1:24:421:24:46

# And I can tell that he'll be there

1:24:461:24:50

# For life

1:24:501:24:52

# And I can tell that he'll be there

1:24:541:24:59

# Fo-o-r

APPLAUSE AND CHEERING

1:25:111:25:15

As well as introducing brand new artists,

1:25:151:25:18

we, of course, feature some of the greatest legends

1:25:181:25:20

of musical history.

1:25:201:25:22

We're going to finish off with somebody from this show.

1:25:221:25:25

But before we do that, I'd like to thank you for joining us

1:25:251:25:28

for 250 years of Later. It's been a pleasure and a joy,

1:25:281:25:31

never a chore, and I hope you'll join us for the next 250 years.

1:25:311:25:36

Be seeing you!
