APPLAUSE AND CHEERING | 0:01:23 | 0:01:25
# I hear the train a comin' | 0:01:34 | 0:01:36
# It's rollin' 'round the bend, | 0:01:37 | 0:01:39
# And I ain't seen the sunshine since I don't know when | 0:01:39 | 0:01:43
# I'm stuck in Folsom Prison and time keeps draggin' on | 0:01:43 | 0:01:49
# But that train keeps on rollin' on down to San Antone. | 0:01:52 | 0:01:58
# When I was just a baby, my mama told me, | 0:02:00 | 0:02:04
# "Son, always be a good boy, don't ever play with guns." | 0:02:04 | 0:02:09
# But I shot a man in Reno, just to watch him die | 0:02:09 | 0:02:15
# When I hear that whistle blowin' I hang my head and cry... # | 0:02:18 | 0:02:24
Woah! | 0:02:24 | 0:02:26 | |
# I bet there's rich folks eatin' | 0:02:51 | 0:02:54
# In a fancy dining car | 0:02:54 | 0:02:56
# They're probably drinkin' coffee and smokin' big cigars | 0:02:56 | 0:03:00
# Well I know I had it comin' | 0:03:00 | 0:03:03
# I know I can't be free | 0:03:03 | 0:03:06
# But those people keep on movin' | 0:03:10 | 0:03:12
# And that's what tortures me | 0:03:12 | 0:03:16
# Well, if they freed me from this prison | 0:03:43 | 0:03:45
If that railroad train was mine | 0:03:45 | 0:03:47
# I bet I'd move it on a little further down the line | 0:03:47 | 0:03:52
# Far from Folsom Prison | 0:03:52 | 0:03:55
# That's where I want to stay | 0:03:55 | 0:03:58
# And I'd let that lonesome whistle blow my blues away. # | 0:04:01 | 0:04:08
APPLAUSE AND CHEERING | 0:04:16 | 0:04:20
On any one show, you'll get | 0:04:22 | 0:04:24
maybe Tom Jones and you'll get some weird punk band with their pants on | 0:04:24 | 0:04:28
and you'll get someone who's a Tamla Motown heroine like, | 0:04:28 | 0:04:33
Martha Reeves or Mary Wells, or someone like that. | 0:04:33 | 0:04:35
It's just such a fantastic combination. | 0:04:35 | 0:04:39
Plus you'll get very populist performers, like | 0:04:39 | 0:04:42
Robbie Williams and then you'll get some act from Croatia | 0:04:42 | 0:04:46
that plays the suitcase, that you've never heard of before. | 0:04:46 | 0:04:49
I think one performance that really sticks in my head | 0:04:49 | 0:04:53
was Paolo Nutini, because... | 0:04:53 | 0:04:57
it was his first single, | 0:04:57 | 0:05:00
and he just seemed so young. | 0:05:00 | 0:05:02
And he just kind of created this magnetism around himself | 0:05:02 | 0:05:08
and it was weird, because he looked like a boy. | 0:05:08 | 0:05:10
And yet, this amazing voice came out of him. | 0:05:10 | 0:05:13
# ..Beside me | 0:05:13 | 0:05:15
# Oh... And I found | 0:05:15 | 0:05:19
# That I'm bound to wander down that one-way road... # | 0:05:19 | 0:05:26
On that same show...Gogol Bordello as well | 0:05:26 | 0:05:31
who I thought were a bit frightening... | 0:05:31 | 0:05:33
to be honest. I thought I wouldn't want to get stuck in a room with them, | 0:05:33 | 0:05:38
especially not a small room cos they looked out of control. | 0:05:38 | 0:05:42
I'm sure they're not, I'm sure they're terribly nice and polite. | 0:05:42 | 0:05:46
I remember seeing Radiohead as well. | 0:05:47 | 0:05:49
And I've always thought Thom Yorke was such a fascinating, dark character | 0:05:49 | 0:05:55
with quite a complicated mind. | 0:05:55 | 0:05:58
I wanted to get him in a room with a pad and paper, | 0:05:58 | 0:06:01
and ask him about his brain and how it worked. | 0:06:01 | 0:06:04
# Please could you stop the noise | 0:06:22 | 0:06:26
# I'm trying to get some rest | 0:06:26 | 0:06:31
# From all the unborn chicken voices in my head | 0:06:39 | 0:06:51
# What's there? | 0:06:51 | 0:07:01
# What's there? | 0:07:01 | 0:07:09
# When I am king | 0:07:11 | 0:07:14
# You will be first against the wall | 0:07:14 | 0:07:20
# With your opinion which is of no consequence at all | 0:07:29 | 0:07:40
# What's there? | 0:07:41 | 0:07:50
# What's there? # | 0:07:50 | 0:07:59
HE SCATS | 0:08:11 | 0:08:14
# Ambition makes you look pretty ugly | 0:08:21 | 0:08:24

# Why don't you remember my name? | 0:08:46 | 0:08:49
# Off with his head, man Off with his head, man | 0:08:49 | 0:08:52

I remember the first time I went on Later. I didn't know much about the programme. | 0:12:18 | 0:12:21
I went on there... It was a different kind of thing for me. | 0:12:21 | 0:12:24
One of the first TV things I'd done. | 0:12:24 | 0:12:26
I was quite nervous, to be fair. I just got on with it. | 0:12:26 | 0:12:31
But it was just different being in that studio with all the people surrounding you. | 0:12:31 | 0:12:37
It was weird. | 0:12:37 | 0:12:38

The more and more I did that show, the more I liked it, the more I realised how respected it was. | 0:12:44 | 0:12:49
I realised it was a really, really good thing to do | 0:12:49 | 0:12:53
as I was getting further and bigger in my career ad well. It was always nice to go there | 0:12:53 | 0:12:57
at a point where I'd crossed over, as well as before I crossed over. | 0:12:57 | 0:13:01

APPLAUSE AND CHEERING | 0:15:31 | 0:15:34
I always think of Later as a sort of dating agency | 0:15:34 | 0:15:37
for the musically desperate. It's where, as it were, meet new people. | 0:15:37 | 0:15:41
And... there's been a sequence of...all the way through | 0:15:41 | 0:15:45
just girls you see for the first time...Amy Winehouse. | 0:15:45 | 0:15:48
I remember a fantastic girl called Priscilla Ahn... | 0:15:48 | 0:15:51
And...Corinne Bailey Rae. | 0:15:51 | 0:15:54
Recently, last year, there was a girl called Melody Gardot who I didn't know. | 0:15:54 | 0:15:59
I'm completely obsessed by this bit of footage. | 0:15:59 | 0:16:02
There are about 9,000 hits on YouTube | 0:16:02 | 0:16:05
and I think I'm 8,000 of them. I send them to all of my friends in America. | 0:16:05 | 0:16:08
If you want to feel that sort of frisson and magic of what music can be like, | 0:16:08 | 0:16:14
and what girls can be like, | 0:16:14 | 0:16:17
all the sort of Trans-Atlantic | 0:16:17 | 0:16:20
sexiness and gorgeousness of a smoky room, | 0:16:20 | 0:16:24
then watch this extraordinary three-minute clip. | 0:16:24 | 0:16:27
And it's Later in its perfection. | 0:16:27 | 0:16:30
# How was I to know | 0:16:30 | 0:16:35

# Oh-oh | 0:17:45 | 0:17:46

# And I would never tell | 0:19:30 | 0:19:33
# If you became a fool and fell in lo-ove... # | 0:19:33 | 0:19:53
APPLAUSE AND CHEERING | 0:20:02 | 0:20:04
I was actually intimidated and scared the first time, cos we had to lead the riff, I think. | 0:20:04 | 0:20:09
You know when they start with a riff | 0:20:09 | 0:20:11
and James started doing Back In Black. | 0:20:11 | 0:20:14
I don't know. I felt... All of a sudden I felt, "I'm not a musician, I don't deserve to be here." | 0:20:16 | 0:20:21
I did feel quite intimidated... | 0:20:21 | 0:20:23
to the point that it kind of make you angry, really. | 0:20:23 | 0:20:29
But sometimes that can make for a better performance. | 0:20:29 | 0:20:33
The last time we were on when we did Peeled Apples off Journal For Plague Lovers, | 0:20:37 | 0:20:41
that felt really rewarding | 0:20:41 | 0:20:46
cos we'd never been on the show with Richey in the band. | 0:20:46 | 0:20:49
We'd always wanted to, but it never happened, | 0:20:49 | 0:20:51
so the fact we were playing his lyrics on Later... | 0:20:51 | 0:20:54
We did Jackie Collins and Peeled Apples ..that felt really... | 0:20:54 | 0:20:58
Like some kind of vindication really cos his words were, you know, as important | 0:20:58 | 0:21:03
if not more than the music. | 0:21:03 | 0:21:04
# ..Riderless horses | 0:21:04 | 0:21:07
# On Chomsky's Camelot... # | 0:21:07 | 0:21:10
It is one of those music shows that certain things just inspire you, really. | 0:21:10 | 0:21:15
The Libertines, really, was the big bolt from the blue. | 0:21:15 | 0:21:18
I fell in love with them just from the first picture, really, from the tunics, | 0:21:18 | 0:21:23
but James was doing Ocean Spray on there with a trumpet player, Know Your Enemy was coming out, | 0:21:23 | 0:21:29
and he called me up to say, "Yeah, they're the boys," you know. | 0:21:29 | 0:21:34
You could just feel something, some raggedness, some romance, | 0:21:34 | 0:21:38
some nihilism, some vanity, and that really came through on the TV as well. | 0:21:38 | 0:21:42
# You're walking like you never seen the light | 0:22:07 | 0:22:09
# You're walking like it every night | 0:22:09 | 0:22:13
# But I've never seen you dance and I've never heard you sing | 0:22:13 | 0:22:16
-# So how can it mean -a single thing | 0:22:16 | 0:22:21
# It's all so rudimentary | 0:22:24 | 0:22:25
# You're talking like you're handy in a fight | 0:22:34 | 0:22:38
# You talk about it every night | 0:22:38 | 0:22:41
# But I've never seen those flowers in the barrel of your gun | 0:22:41 | 0:22:45
-# All I've ever -seen you do is run | 0:22:45 | 0:22:50
# It's all so rudimentary | 0:22:52 | 0:22:54
# Well tell me baby How does it feel? | 0:22:54 | 0:22:59
# I know you like the roll of the limousine wheel | 0:22:59 | 0:23:03
-# And they all get them out -They all get them out | 0:23:03 | 0:23:07
-# For the boys in the band -Only for the boys in the band | 0:23:07 | 0:23:10
-# They twist and they shout -Twist and scream and they shout | 0:23:10 | 0:23:14
-# For the boys in the band -Only for the boys in the band | 0:23:14 | 0:23:17
# You're walking like you never seen the light | 0:23:25 | 0:23:28
# You're walking like it every night | 0:23:28 | 0:23:32
# But then I stop to think I ask my self why | 0:23:32 | 0:23:35
-# One of those things that -darling you should try | 0:23:35 | 0:23:40
# It's all so rudimentary | 0:23:42 | 0:23:45
-# Now I'm -jealous I'm jealous of my own | 0:23:45 | 0:23:49
# I've no homestead but through these hearts I will roam | 0:23:49 | 0:23:53
-# And they all get them out -They all get them out | 0:23:53 | 0:23:58
-# For the boys in the band -Only for the boys in the band | 0:23:58 | 0:24:01
-# They twist and they shout for -Twist and scream and they shout | 0:24:01 | 0:24:05
-# For the boys in the band -Only for the boys in the band | 0:24:05 | 0:24:08
-# So tell me, -baby, How does it feel? | 0:24:35 | 0:24:39
# I know you like the roll of the limousine wheel | 0:24:39 | 0:24:43
-# And they all get them out -They all get them out | 0:24:43 | 0:24:47

-# For the boys in the band -Only for the boys | 0:24:55 | 0:24:58
-# And they all get them out -They all get them out | 0:24:58 | 0:25:01
-# For the boys in the band -For the boys in the band | 0:25:01 | 0:25:05
-# They scream and they shout -You know they twist and they shout | 0:25:05 | 0:25:08
# For the boys in the band The boys in the band. # | 0:25:08 | 0:25:12
CHEERING AND APPLAUSE | 0:25:18 | 0:25:20
The secret ingredient is probably the fact that it doesn't pander to any trends, | 0:25:21 | 0:25:27
it kind of transcends trends. It's nothing to do with fashion, | 0:25:27 | 0:25:30
so nobody's on their guard, thinking, | 0:25:30 | 0:25:32
"Oh, God, if I don't get this right, my career's finished." | 0:25:32 | 0:25:36
It really is about the music and really is about celebrating the artist. | 0:25:36 | 0:25:40
That must be a great feeling, to be a musician, | 0:25:40 | 0:25:44
and suddenly not have to think about what people think about you. | 0:25:44 | 0:25:48
Cos there, you're not judged on anything apart from... | 0:25:48 | 0:25:51
"You're good anyway, that's why you're here." | 0:25:51 | 0:25:54
I'm a black music fan, so Billy Preston, before he died, | 0:25:54 | 0:25:58
doing That's The Way God Planned It, I remember singing along and swaying along to that. | 0:25:58 | 0:26:03
I would have got me lighter out, but I don't smoke. | 0:26:03 | 0:26:06
# Why can't we be humble like the good Lord said? | 0:26:06 | 0:26:12
# He promised to exalt us But low is the way | 0:26:12 | 0:26:17
# How can men be so greedy | 0:26:18 | 0:26:21
# When there's so much left? | 0:26:21 | 0:26:25
# All things are God-given | 0:26:25 | 0:26:27
# And they all have been blessed | 0:26:27 | 0:26:29
# That's the way God planned it | 0:26:29 | 0:26:33
# That's the way God wants it to be | 0:26:33 | 0:26:36
# That's the way God planned it | 0:26:43 | 0:26:46
# That's the way God wants it to be | 0:26:46 | 0:26:49
# Let not your heart be troubled | 0:26:56 | 0:26:59
# Let mourning, sobbing cease | 0:26:59 | 0:27:02
# Just learn how to help one another | 0:27:03 | 0:27:05
# And live in perfect peace | 0:27:05 | 0:27:08
# If we all could be humble | 0:27:08 | 0:27:10
# Like the good Lord said | 0:27:12 | 0:27:14
# He said he would exalt us all | 0:27:14 | 0:27:18
# But low is the way | 0:27:18 | 0:27:19
# That's the way God planned it | 0:27:19 | 0:27:23
# That's the way God wants it to be | 0:27:23 | 0:27:27
# Yeah | 0:27:27 | 0:27:28 | |
# That's the way God planned it | 0:27:32 | 0:27:36
# That's the way God wants it to be | 0:27:36 | 0:27:39
# Yeah... # | 0:27:41 | 0:27:44
Go on, Jools! | 0:27:48 | 0:27:50
Yeah. | 0:27:50 | 0:27:52 | |
JOOLS AND BILLY PLAY A CALL-AND-RESPONSE SEQUENCE | 0:27:52 | 0:27:55
Do that again, I'll do it again! | 0:28:06 | 0:28:10
Yeah! | 0:28:29 | 0:28:31 | |
# I hope you get the message | 0:28:32 | 0:28:34
# When you want somebody, well | 0:28:36 | 0:28:38
# You may not understand me | 0:28:39 | 0:28:41
# But Billy will love you still | 0:28:41 | 0:28:44
# That's the way God planned me | 0:28:44 | 0:28:47
# That's the way God wants me to be | 0:28:47 | 0:28:50
# Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah | 0:28:50 | 0:28:53
# That's the way God planned it | 0:28:57 | 0:29:00
# That's the way God want it to be | 0:29:00 | 0:29:04
# Come on, come on | 0:29:04 | 0:29:06
# That's the way God planned it | 0:29:10 | 0:29:13
# That's the way God wants it to be | 0:29:13 | 0:29:17
# Yeah, all right. # | 0:29:17 | 0:29:20
Yeah! | 0:29:23 | 0:29:25 | |
CHEERING AND APPLAUSE | 0:29:25 | 0:29:28
One of the times that I remember SO clearly | 0:29:31 | 0:29:33
was when, I think, Datsuns were playing, also Coldplay were there, | 0:29:33 | 0:29:36
and Foo Fighters. It was like rock wars that night, | 0:29:36 | 0:29:39
everyone was trying to be really loud, | 0:29:39 | 0:29:41
with the exception of Coldplay, obviously, they don't do rock wars. | 0:29:41 | 0:29:45
They do it in their own special way. | 0:29:45 | 0:29:47
I remember standing really close to Foo Fighters | 0:29:47 | 0:29:49
when they were playing, and the volume wasn't turned up to 11, | 0:29:49 | 0:29:53
it was to 12, it was that loud, just being blown away by the volume. | 0:29:53 | 0:29:57
And it was just such an occasion, it was really exciting, | 0:29:57 | 0:30:00
and you can see how the bands play off each other | 0:30:00 | 0:30:02
and how it really, really matters to them, how they come across. | 0:30:02 | 0:30:06
I think that's one of my favourite moments. | 0:30:06 | 0:30:08
CHEERING AND APPLAUSE | 0:30:08 | 0:30:10
# All my life I've been searching for somethin' | 0:30:19 | 0:30:21
# Somethin' never comes Never leads to nothin' | 0:30:21 | 0:30:24
# Nothin' satisfies Gettin' close | 0:30:24 | 0:30:27
# Closer to the prize | 0:30:27 | 0:30:28
# At the end of the rope | 0:30:28 | 0:30:30
# All night long I dream of the day | 0:30:30 | 0:30:32
# When it comes around | 0:30:32 | 0:30:34
# And it's taken away | 0:30:34 | 0:30:36
# Leaves me with the feelin' that I feel the most | 0:30:36 | 0:30:38
# Feel it come to life | 0:30:38 | 0:30:39
# When I see your ghost, yay! | 0:30:39 | 0:30:41
# Calm down, don't you resist | 0:30:52 | 0:30:54
# You've such a delicate wrist | 0:30:54 | 0:30:58
# And if I give it a twist | 0:30:58 | 0:31:01
# Somethin' to hold | 0:31:01 | 0:31:02
# When I lose my grip | 0:31:02 | 0:31:04
# Will I find something in there | 0:31:04 | 0:31:07
# To give it just what it needs? | 0:31:07 | 0:31:09
# Another reason to bleed | 0:31:09 | 0:31:12
# One by one, hidden up my sleeve | 0:31:12 | 0:31:15
# One by one, hidden up my sleeve | 0:31:15 | 0:31:18
# Hey, don't let it go to waste | 0:31:18 | 0:31:21
# I love it but I hate the taste | 0:31:21 | 0:31:23
# Weight keeping me down | 0:31:23 | 0:31:28
# Hey, don't let it go to waste | 0:31:28 | 0:31:31
# I love it but I hate the taste | 0:31:31 | 0:31:33
# Weight keeping me down, oh yeah! | 0:31:33 | 0:31:38
# Will I find a believer? | 0:31:43 | 0:31:46
# Another one who believes | 0:31:46 | 0:31:49
# Another one to deceive | 0:31:49 | 0:31:52
# Over and over, down on my knees | 0:31:52 | 0:31:55
# If I get any closer | 0:31:55 | 0:31:58
# And if you open up wide | 0:31:58 | 0:32:00
# And if you let me inside | 0:32:00 | 0:32:03
# On and on I got nothin' to hide | 0:32:03 | 0:32:06
# On and on I got nothin' to hide | 0:32:06 | 0:32:09
# Hey, don't let it go to waste | 0:32:09 | 0:32:12
# I love it but I hate the taste | 0:32:12 | 0:32:14
# Weight keeping me down | 0:32:14 | 0:32:19
# Hey don't let it go to waste | 0:32:19 | 0:32:21
# I love it but I hate the taste | 0:32:21 | 0:32:24
# Weight keeping me down, ohhh! | 0:32:24 | 0:32:28

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE | 0:34:26 | 0:34:29
It's absolutely the Holy Grail. | 0:34:30 | 0:34:32
I've been watching Jools for years and loving it, | 0:34:32 | 0:34:36
and imagining that maybe, one day, I'd get on it. | 0:34:36 | 0:34:38
So I got the call, had no idea who else was on it, | 0:34:38 | 0:34:43
literally had 24 hours to get down from the north, down to London, | 0:34:43 | 0:34:48
ran in my flat, had a shower, jumped in a cab, | 0:34:48 | 0:34:51
got the studios, eh... | 0:34:51 | 0:34:55
and I was almost just pushed straight on! | 0:34:55 | 0:34:58
Erm, you know, hadn't... | 0:34:58 | 0:34:59
Hadn't thought about what I was going to wear, | 0:34:59 | 0:35:02
I ended up with like jumper sleeves on my legs! | 0:35:02 | 0:35:05
I thought, "They're really cool!" Like, hiking boots, | 0:35:05 | 0:35:08
jumper sleeves, a little Top Shop skirt, | 0:35:08 | 0:35:13
a little knackered old black T-shirt and just, you know, on, done. | 0:35:13 | 0:35:17
And I'm just, thank God, really good... | 0:35:17 | 0:35:20
Like, much better under pressure. | 0:35:20 | 0:35:21
If it's a rehearsal, I'll make a mistake, | 0:35:21 | 0:35:24
but I know that I'm better under pressure, | 0:35:24 | 0:35:26
so I was like, "Come on, just be fierce, do your thing, | 0:35:26 | 0:35:30
"don't think about it." | 0:35:30 | 0:35:31
And it's funny watching it, cos I can just see my face... | 0:35:31 | 0:35:35
I'm not really aware of anything around me, | 0:35:35 | 0:35:38
I'm just, you know...TCB! | 0:35:38 | 0:35:42
And now, let's introduce somebody new making their television debut. | 0:35:42 | 0:35:46
From St Andrews in Scotland, please welcome KT Tunstall! | 0:35:46 | 0:35:49

My mum and dad were watching and my dad said that he jumped round the living room, just going, | 0:39:33 | 0:39:38
"She's bloody done it!" | 0:39:38 | 0:39:40
And now, going to the States and Australia and Japan, | 0:39:42 | 0:39:48
everywhere I go, a few interviews, they'll say, | 0:39:48 | 0:39:53
"So, you broke in on the Jools Holland show, | 0:39:53 | 0:39:56
"what an amazing performance, | 0:39:56 | 0:39:58

I didn't even know what Jools Holland was, cos I didn't live here | 0:44:01 | 0:44:05
and also, I don't watch TV. so the whole thing was like... | 0:44:05 | 0:44:10
kinda surreal for me, and I didn't know none of the bands. | 0:44:10 | 0:44:14
And you know how they all have the stage? | 0:44:14 | 0:44:17
I said, "Where am I gonna be?" "Oh, they're just gonna shove you out in the middle of the floor." | 0:44:17 | 0:44:22
So...I thought it was gonna be a disaster, you know? | 0:44:22 | 0:44:26
And, er...but everyone was so nice to me there, | 0:44:26 | 0:44:31
and I just figured, "Oh, well, I'll play," cos I just play an old, beat-up guitar. | 0:44:31 | 0:44:35
So I thought, you know, if it's the end of my career, | 0:44:35 | 0:44:39
that don't matter cos I haven't started it yet. | 0:44:39 | 0:44:42
But I've watched it on the TV, you know? | 0:44:42 | 0:44:45
And I've caught it a couple of times where it was just so, like... | 0:44:45 | 0:44:49
One time, I think I turned it on and I got Elbow on there. | 0:44:49 | 0:44:53
And I really liked them, it was just majestic to see them on there. | 0:44:53 | 0:44:58
# Drinking in the morning sun | 0:45:16 | 0:45:19
# Blinking in the morning sun | 0:45:22 | 0:45:25

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE | 0:49:54 | 0:49:57
The one performance that really sticks out for me... | 0:50:07 | 0:50:10
Well, one of them, cos there were loads. | 0:50:10 | 0:50:12
I'm going to stick to my sort of genre though. | 0:50:12 | 0:50:14
Which is obviously soul, R&B and hip-hop. | 0:50:14 | 0:50:17
It was Mary J Blige, No More Drama. | 0:50:17 | 0:50:20
For the casual viewer, they wouldn't really know the history of Mary J. | 0:50:20 | 0:50:23
She's somebody who has absolutely... all her material comes from her life, | 0:50:23 | 0:50:29
and a fan of Mary J would know that she's always been unhappy, | 0:50:29 | 0:50:34
miserable... You know! Pained. She brought the blues back into R&B, | 0:50:34 | 0:50:40
in a sense, in a way that no other female artist was doing at the time | 0:50:40 | 0:50:44
in the early '90s. Then there came a pivotal moment in her career, | 0:50:44 | 0:50:48
where she changed. The drugs had gone, the bad relationships, | 0:50:48 | 0:50:52
And Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis wrote the song for her, No More Drama. | 0:50:52 | 0:50:55
And it's quite worthy, you know, when I first heard it, I thought, | 0:50:55 | 0:50:59
"OK." I heard it on record, I thought I understood the record, | 0:50:59 | 0:51:02
but it means nothing on record compared to the performance. | 0:51:02 | 0:51:05
This woman, whenever she performs this song, | 0:51:05 | 0:51:08
you just watch a person feeling the music. | 0:51:08 | 0:51:11
Mary J took it to church on Later. | 0:51:11 | 0:51:14
The only thing she didn't do was break down in tears, | 0:51:14 | 0:51:17
she normally breaks down in tears when she does it. | 0:51:17 | 0:51:19
It was one of the...not pitch perfect, but most emotive performances | 0:51:19 | 0:51:23
I've ever seen on Jools Holland. | 0:51:23 | 0:51:25
And you can see the crowd are in awe at the end, | 0:51:25 | 0:51:29
because very rarely does an artist truly give it up | 0:51:29 | 0:51:33
the way she did with No More Drama. It was magnificent. | 0:51:33 | 0:51:36
# Whoa, whoa, whoa | 0:51:36 | 0:51:39
# Ooh-ooh-ooh | 0:51:41 | 0:51:44
# Oh yeah, no more | 0:51:46 | 0:51:50
# Ooh | 0:51:56 | 0:51:57 | |
# Ooh-ooh-ooh | 0:52:01 | 0:52:03
# Oh yeah, no more | 0:52:06 | 0:52:11
# Broken heart again | 0:52:14 | 0:52:16
# Another lesson learned | 0:52:16 | 0:52:19

# Now you're free from all the pain | 0:54:01 | 0:54:03

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE | 0:56:53 | 0:56:56
Thank you. | 0:56:58 | 0:57:00
I don't know, how many different things have I done on there? | 0:57:00 | 0:57:03
I've done...started off with Blur. | 0:57:03 | 0:57:05
# All your life you're dreaming... # | 0:57:05 | 0:57:07
And then I played with Afel and Mali Music. | 0:57:07 | 0:57:12
And then with Kano. | 0:57:16 | 0:57:19
# Now sing along! | 0:57:19 | 0:57:21
# La la la la la | 0:57:21 | 0:57:23
# La la la la la | 0:57:23 | 0:57:26
And then with the Monkey Orchestra. | 0:57:26 | 0:57:29
Er... I don't know if I actually... | 0:57:31 | 0:57:35
I did play one song, but I spent quite a lot of the time | 0:57:35 | 0:57:39
sitting at the back with a giant panda. | 0:57:39 | 0:57:42
The Good, the Bad and the Queen as well. | 0:57:45 | 0:57:47
And most recently with Gorillaz. So that's quite a few things. | 0:57:50 | 0:57:53
And just a last question, Damon, thank you so much. | 0:57:53 | 0:57:56
Thank you very much for letting me play all those times. | 0:57:56 | 0:58:01

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE | 1:02:26 | 1:02:29
What makes the show work is putting together the very different groups, | 1:02:31 | 1:02:36
so you might have a solo woman country and western singer | 1:02:36 | 1:02:42
from Nashville, along with a rock'n'roll band | 1:02:42 | 1:02:46
or a young British band, | 1:02:46 | 1:02:48
and it's the combinations, I think, that work. | 1:02:48 | 1:02:51
And there's always the fact that you've usually got, like, | 1:02:51 | 1:02:56
six bands around the kind of edge of a circle, | 1:02:56 | 1:03:00
and they're watching the other bands, so you've got this | 1:03:00 | 1:03:03
kind of mutual respect going on all the time, | 1:03:03 | 1:03:06
so it's fascinating to see one musician applauding another musician. | 1:03:06 | 1:03:10
So I think that's what really makes it work, I think it's the only show | 1:03:10 | 1:03:14
that puts together different kinds of music, | 1:03:14 | 1:03:17
and that's because of Jools' general interest in music, I think. | 1:03:17 | 1:03:22
He has such a broad range of interests. | 1:03:22 | 1:03:25
And the interviews, and when he plays piano | 1:03:25 | 1:03:29
and someone sings a song just with him, | 1:03:29 | 1:03:33
and then they talk, that's always fascinating. | 1:03:33 | 1:03:36
-Rehab. -Yeah. -When did you write that one? -Um, I wrote that... | 1:03:36 | 1:03:39
in February or March, in New York, with Mark Ronson. | 1:03:39 | 1:03:44
And we were just walking down the street, | 1:03:44 | 1:03:46
and I sang the hook, and he burst out laughing. He said, "Who's that?" | 1:03:46 | 1:03:49
I said, "I just made it up!" And he was like, "That would be really cool." | 1:03:49 | 1:03:53
So I said, "Let's go to the studio now, we can knock it out in an hour." | 1:03:53 | 1:03:57
-You went straight there and did it, just like that? -Yeah, literally. -Your voice has become | 1:03:57 | 1:04:01
-more powerful, your songwriting has become stronger, do you feel that happening? -Definitely. | 1:04:01 | 1:04:06
I'm very proud of this record and I feel that unless I could have bettered myself, I might as well | 1:04:06 | 1:04:11
-give up. -And it's a different vibration, | 1:04:11 | 1:04:14
-it's got a sort of Motown groove. -Yes. | 1:04:14 | 1:04:16
What's the first music that you listened to? | 1:04:16 | 1:04:19
A lot of jazz, really, a lot of Sarah Vaughan, | 1:04:19 | 1:04:21
loads of Sarah Vaughan songs - "April In Paris", | 1:04:21 | 1:04:24
but I think one of my earliest memories is listening to my granddad | 1:04:24 | 1:04:28
play "Tenderly", my Pop Larry, God rest his soul. "Tenderly". | 1:04:28 | 1:04:32
Did your granddad play an instrument or did he play the record? | 1:04:32 | 1:04:35
-No, he'd play it off the record. -Do you know how to sing that? | 1:04:35 | 1:04:39
-Yes. -Would you give that a go? -Yeah! -Shall we give "Tenderly" a go? | 1:04:39 | 1:04:43
Well, I think we should get a tempo, hang on. | 1:04:43 | 1:04:47
Could you give us a bit of this? | 1:04:47 | 1:04:49
# The evening breeze caressed the trees tenderly | 1:04:59 | 1:05:06
# The evening breeze caressed the trees tenderly | 1:05:08 | 1:05:15
# I can't forget how two hearts met, breathlessly | 1:05:15 | 1:05:23
# Your arms opened wide | 1:05:23 | 1:05:26
# And closed me inside | 1:05:26 | 1:05:31
# You took my love, you took my heart so tenderly. # | 1:05:31 | 1:05:38
-CHEERING AND APPLAUSE -Aah, your granddad would love that. | 1:05:43 | 1:05:46
-We love it too. Amy Winehouse! -Thanks for having me. | 1:05:46 | 1:05:50
Jimmy Cliff. I saw him. I went in for his rehearsals. | 1:05:50 | 1:05:53
I was standing as close as what I am to you, | 1:05:53 | 1:05:55
watching him sing Many Rivers To Cross. That was pretty special. | 1:05:55 | 1:05:59
# Many rivers I've crossed | 1:05:59 | 1:06:03
# But just where to begin | 1:06:03 | 1:06:07
# Playing for time? # | 1:06:08 | 1:06:11
I saw Wild Beast on there. That was the first time I'd heard them. | 1:06:11 | 1:06:15
It was... Quite often there are new artists, which is always good. | 1:06:15 | 1:06:21
There is so little music TV on, as everyone knows. | 1:06:21 | 1:06:24
We'd really suffer without it, really. | 1:06:24 | 1:06:28
# Watch me, watch me | 1:06:28 | 1:06:30
# Ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh... | 1:06:33 | 1:06:35
# Oh-oh-oh... # | 1:06:35 | 1:06:39
'92 was the first time I done it, | 1:06:39 | 1:06:41
when my first solo album come out. | 1:06:41 | 1:06:42
I pretty much did it every time I put a record out, really, | 1:06:42 | 1:06:45
which is quite a few times over the last 250 years, whatever it's been. | 1:06:45 | 1:06:49
# I don't care how long this lasts | 1:07:10 | 1:07:14
# We have no future Oh, we have no past | 1:07:14 | 1:07:19
# I write this now while I'm in control | 1:07:19 | 1:07:23
# I choose the words and how the melody goes | 1:07:23 | 1:07:27
# Along winding streets We walked hand in hand | 1:07:27 | 1:07:31
# How I long for the sharp wind To take my breath away again | 1:07:31 | 1:07:36
# I run my fingers through your hair | 1:07:36 | 1:07:41
# Hair like a wheat field I'd run through | 1:07:41 | 1:07:44
# That I'd run through | 1:07:44 | 1:07:47
# And, I miss you so | 1:07:47 | 1:07:49
# Oh, I miss you so | 1:07:50 | 1:07:53
# Now you're gone | 1:07:56 | 1:07:58
# I feel so alone | 1:07:58 | 1:08:00
# Ooh, said I miss you so | 1:08:00 | 1:08:04
# I do | 1:08:04 | 1:08:05 | |
# Sent you a flower A sunflower bright | 1:08:14 | 1:08:18
# Cos you cloud my days Messing up my nights | 1:08:18 | 1:08:23
# Right the way up to the top of your head | 1:08:23 | 1:08:27
# Sun-shower kisses I felt we had | 1:08:27 | 1:08:31
# I miss you so | 1:08:34 | 1:08:35
# Yeah, darling, I miss you so | 1:08:37 | 1:08:40
# Now you're gone | 1:08:42 | 1:08:44
# I feel so alone | 1:08:44 | 1:08:47
# Wo-oh-oh, said I miss you so | 1:08:47 | 1:08:50
# Well, I miss you so | 1:09:11 | 1:09:13
# Oh, darling, I miss you so | 1:09:15 | 1:09:18
# Now you're gone | 1:09:20 | 1:09:22
# I feel so alone | 1:09:22 | 1:09:25
# Wo-oh-oh, said I miss you so | 1:09:25 | 1:09:28
# OH! All I gotta do | 1:09:37 | 1:09:40
# Is think of you | 1:09:40 | 1:09:42
Wo-oh-oh and I miss you so | 1:09:43 | 1:09:46
# Baby, I | 1:09:47 | 1:09:49
# I'm afraid to say why | 1:09:49 | 1:09:51
# Oh-oh-oh, that I miss you so | 1:09:52 | 1:09:55
# I do | 1:09:55 | 1:09:56 | |
# Baby, I | 1:10:05 | 1:10:06
# I'm afraid to say why | 1:10:06 | 1:10:09
# Wo-oh-oh, that I miss you so | 1:10:10 | 1:10:12
# I do. # | 1:10:12 | 1:10:14
I think whether it's politics, sport, whatever it is, what you need | 1:10:42 | 1:10:46
for great communicators is a combination | 1:10:46 | 1:10:49
of real knowledge, proper knowledge, | 1:10:49 | 1:10:51
and enthusiasm. When it comes to music, no-one beats Jools Holland | 1:10:51 | 1:10:55
for that. He has kept really good, serious popular music, | 1:10:55 | 1:11:01
a big spread of different performers and bands, on our screens | 1:11:01 | 1:11:06
for a very long time, which nobody else has done. | 1:11:06 | 1:11:08
Lily Allen, welcome to our show! | 1:11:08 | 1:11:10
When I was in, Sonic Youth were on and also the great Lily Allen, | 1:11:10 | 1:11:14
and I got at least four or five kisses from her, which was, | 1:11:14 | 1:11:18
I think, my career highlight of all time. Thanks, Jools. | 1:11:18 | 1:11:21
# I wanna be rich and I want lots of money | 1:11:21 | 1:11:24
# I don't care about clever I don't care about funny | 1:11:24 | 1:11:28
# I want loads of clothes And fuck-loads of diamonds | 1:11:28 | 1:11:32
# I heard people die while they're trying to find them | 1:11:32 | 1:11:35
# I'll take my clothes off and it will be shameless | 1:11:35 | 1:11:39
# Cos everyone knows that's how you get famous | 1:11:39 | 1:11:42
# I look at the Sun and I look in the Mirror | 1:11:42 | 1:11:46
# I'm on the right track Yeah, I'm on to a winner | 1:11:46 | 1:11:49
# I don't know what's right and what's real any more | 1:11:49 | 1:11:55
# I don't know how I'm meant to feel | 1:11:56 | 1:12:01
# Any mo-o-o-o-ore | 1:12:01 | 1:12:04
# When do you think it will all become clear? | 1:12:04 | 1:12:08
# I'm being taken over by the fe-e-e-e-e-e-ear | 1:12:11 | 1:12:18
# Life's about filmstars and less about mothers | 1:12:24 | 1:12:29
# It's all about fast cars and cussing each other | 1:12:29 | 1:12:32
# But it doesn't matter cos I'm packing plastic | 1:12:32 | 1:12:36
# And that's what makes my life so fucking fantastic | 1:12:36 | 1:12:40
# I am a weapon of massive consumption | 1:12:40 | 1:12:43
# It's not my fault It's how I'm programmed to function | 1:12:43 | 1:12:46
# I look at the Sun and I look in the Mirror | 1:12:46 | 1:12:50
# I'm on the right track Yeah, I'm on to a winner | 1:12:50 | 1:12:53
# I don't know what's right and what's real any more | 1:12:53 | 1:13:00
# I don't know how I'm meant to feel | 1:13:01 | 1:13:05
# Any mo-o-o-o-ore | 1:13:05 | 1:13:08
# When do you think it will all become clear? | 1:13:08 | 1:13:13
# I'm being taken over by the fe-e-e-e-e-e-ear | 1:13:15 | 1:13:22
# Forget about guns And forget ammunition | 1:13:37 | 1:13:40
# Cos I'm killing them all on my own little mission | 1:13:40 | 1:13:44
# I'm not a saint but I'm not a sinner | 1:13:44 | 1:13:47
# And everything's cool as long as I'm getting thinner | 1:13:47 | 1:13:51
# I don't know what's right and what's real any more | 1:13:51 | 1:13:57
# I don't know how I'm meant to feel | 1:13:59 | 1:14:02
# Any mo-o-o-o-ore | 1:14:02 | 1:14:05
# When do you think it will all become clear? | 1:14:05 | 1:14:10
# I'm being taken over by the fe-e-e-e-e-e-ear. # | 1:14:13 | 1:14:19
APPLAUSE AND CHEERING | 1:14:19 | 1:14:21
For me, the whole experience of watching Later is what I don't expect to see. | 1:14:26 | 1:14:30
That's part of why I watch it. | 1:14:30 | 1:14:31
I tune in to watch the bands I'm a fan of, | 1:14:31 | 1:14:34
cos I know they'll perform well, stakes are high on the show, | 1:14:34 | 1:14:38
but also I get to watch classic performances from... | 1:14:38 | 1:14:42
timeless musicians who've been around a long time. | 1:14:42 | 1:14:44
A lot of my favourite performances are strange things like Michael McDonald | 1:14:44 | 1:14:49
and stuff like that because I've never seen them sing before | 1:14:49 | 1:14:53
and watching him and Jools do a duet is something really special. | 1:14:53 | 1:14:57
# ..Some day, somewhere | 1:14:57 | 1:15:00
# She will return... # | 1:15:01 | 1:15:03
But for me, on a rock level, | 1:15:03 | 1:15:05
the one that stood out as soon as I had to think about this | 1:15:05 | 1:15:09
was At The Drive-In. | 1:15:09 | 1:15:11
They did One Arm Scissor and that was in 2000, I think, | 1:15:11 | 1:15:15
and that was a really game-changing moment for rock and roll. | 1:15:15 | 1:15:21
Because Later, then, as it is today, was established as the place to go | 1:15:21 | 1:15:27
and perform for bands, and to watch as a fan. | 1:15:27 | 1:15:30
Up to that point... We'd been coming off the back of the Britpop thing | 1:15:30 | 1:15:34
and we were in a pop whirlwind. It was Backstreet Boys, Britney Spears, Westlife and Boyzone | 1:15:34 | 1:15:41
and there was singer-songwriters in the form of Travis and stuff, | 1:15:41 | 1:15:44
but no-one was really kicking the door down. | 1:15:44 | 1:15:47
And when I saw that performance, and I knew the song and the band, | 1:15:47 | 1:15:50
but to me, it must have felt like watching MC5, | 1:15:50 | 1:15:53
or something, you know? It had that incredible punk rock spirit | 1:15:53 | 1:15:57
with this amazing tune that was rumbling underneath | 1:15:57 | 1:16:01
but with a total disregard to the craft of the song | 1:16:01 | 1:16:05
and everything thrown into the performance. | 1:16:05 | 1:16:07
Somehow that benefited the song. | 1:16:07 | 1:16:10
I don't quite know how, it's detuned everywhere and they miss cue-points, everything's shambolic, | 1:16:10 | 1:16:16
but the spirit of that performance stood out to me as | 1:16:16 | 1:16:19
one of the great Later moments. | 1:16:19 | 1:16:21

PIANO PLAYS | 1:20:24 | 1:20:27
Can me mate have his chair back please? | 1:20:27 | 1:20:30
My first time on Jools Holland was in 2006 | 1:20:30 | 1:20:33
and I'd only just been signed. | 1:20:33 | 1:20:35
They picked me... You know when they have the new talent? | 1:20:35 | 1:20:39
They did it with KT Tunstall and stuff like that. | 1:20:39 | 1:20:42
So I did that and it was really, really frightening. | 1:20:42 | 1:20:45
I think someone pulled out and it was... Oh, Bjork was on it, | 1:20:45 | 1:20:49
Paul McCartney was on it and it was my first time being in a TV studio, | 1:20:49 | 1:20:53
let alone actually being on TV. | 1:20:53 | 1:20:54
I have the fondest memories of that. Meeting Jools, | 1:20:54 | 1:20:59
the hallways, the dressing rooms, the floor, | 1:20:59 | 1:21:02
it was so much bigger... I always thought it was tiny | 1:21:02 | 1:21:05
cos everyone says studios are never as big as they look on TV and it was just massive. | 1:21:05 | 1:21:09
It was just amazing. It was the best night ever. When I started, | 1:21:09 | 1:21:12
my guitar wasn't on, so I thought I'd have to do it again, | 1:21:12 | 1:21:15
and everyone else got cleared and didn't have to do their performance again | 1:21:15 | 1:21:19
but I was frightened I'd have to sing in front of a Beatle again! | 1:21:19 | 1:21:23
Now, making her TV debut, | 1:21:23 | 1:21:26
we welcome, from Brixton, Adele. | 1:21:26 | 1:21:30
