I'm Jools Holland, and this is the BBC, where I make my show.

I'm a fortunate man because I really do have the best job in the world,

listening to, and playing with,

some of the greatest music artists on Earth.

Firstly, I'd like to thank everybody who gave me this fantastic job,

whoever they may be. Thanks so much.

Secondly, I'd like to take this opportunity, in this edition,

to show you a compilation of some of my personal favourite moments and collaborations.

There will be small moments with pianos.

There will be large moments with my Rhythm & Blues Orchestra.

In these first three excerpts, I'm going to be improvising with the White Stripes,

Sometimes, my favourite moments haven't been big moments like that,

but the more intimate moments, with just voice and piano.

and we'll rehearse in this, my beautifully decorated dressing room,

I could talk about Stevie Wonder all day.

When did you first hear Stevie?

I was about... I think I was about nine,

and my dad played me Superstition.

And I'd never heard anything like it, I was like, "What the hell is this?

"This is funky, man." It was like nothing I'd ever heard, really.

I remember hearing it, I was about nine,

and the first one I ever heard was er...er....

I heard it, on a transistor radio in Hasledene Road,

coming out of a little car there.

The other moments that I've really treasured on this show

are not when you have one amazing artist, but when you have two.

and her last ever television experience, with, on backing vocals,

When did you first meet one another?

-Apollo Theater.

-Where are you from, Edwin, originally?

Originally Nashville, Tennessee,

but I was raised in Cleveland, Ohio,

and Cleveland was the hub of entertainment.

Anybody that was anybody had to come to Cleveland to perform.

I saw Sam and Dave, the formidable team,

in Cleveland at the Cleveland Arena

and they were absolutely smokin'.

Where did you come from originally?

Originally I was in Miami, Florida, you know,

that's where I started,

and when we became, you know, success...

worthy enough, as they say,

then we...you know, at the Apollo Theater,

Uptown Theater, all those theatres.

Give us an example... What sort of song would you have sung?

What songs did they love in the Apollo then?

During that particular time,

-a lot of blues singers were still around...

-Yeah.

It was just the kit and caboodle for the people,

but we cannot, cannot forget the great Mr Ray Charles.

I am an improvisational musician

and seldom play the same thing twice.

I was particularly honoured

when jazz legend Herbie Hancock invited me to join him on a duet,

improvising over the theme of St Louis Blues -

the first song I'd ever learnt from my uncle Dave on the piano.

I'm going bring the piano in now. We won't do the duet,

it's a bit complicated,

so we want to bring the piano in for the duet with Herbie.
