Charles Bradley. Victim Of Love. A lot of beautiful people in this

room this evening. Over at the piano, the person we heard singing

so beautifully in that corner. We welcome Laura Mvula. Welcome to the

show. Very nice to have you here. You sounded lovely. Am I right in

thinking you have your brother and sister singing with you? That is

right. My brother and sister play instruments. James on cello and

Dion on violin. And they sing as well. The vocal harmony is

exquisite. I always think there is something special about blood

harmonies. Would you agree it is a different sound? We know each other

inside and out and we are used to singing together, so I guess the

blend is special. Something similar in the voice box. I have to say

congratulations, because you have had huge hits. Everything is coming

your way. How has it been? Have things changed for you? It has been

mental. In a good way. It has been so exciting. I never would have

thought something like this would happen for me, so I am just

enjoying this roller-coaster. And the best bit is playing with

amazing musicians, and playing with my brother and sister, who come on

the road with me. It is incredible. I am pleased you are enjoying it.

You are from Birmingham, where lots of great people... Huge history. UB

40, Ruby Turner, Robert Plant. Does that place, is it an important

place for you, musically? Absolutely. I grew up listening

mainly to my aunt's a cappella group, Black Voices, who were

founded in Birmingham and did stuff with Ruby Turner. Definitely,

Birmingham is an important place for me and has definitely shaped my

sound. A very musical city. What was the first music you heard?

grew up on a lot of gospel music, and also a lot of soul and

classical as well. But the songs that I remember were traditional

gospel songs. I think they always have a place and mean a lot to me.

And I hope the influence comes through in my music. We would like

going to stride purposefully to the piano to have an enchanting

Victim Of Love, you're great new record that we have been hearing

from. Wonderful to have your back on the show. You are rather unusual

in that success has come to you much later in life. Yes, very late,

but I am here, thank God. Were you surprised to get this success later

in life? My mother always told me one thing, never question God. Wait

until your time comes. It will come. And I always hold on to that.

that what kept you going? That is what kept me strong. And how did

you start? How did you start off in singing? Mainly from James Brown.

My sister took me to see him when I was 14 years old. And when I saw

that I said, wow, that is what I want to be. Where was that?The

Apollo Theatre, 1962. 14 years old, seeing James Brown, and that made

you want to become like James Brown. So you studied him, like somebody

would study Mozart. Yes, I mastered him and now I am doing Charles

Bradley. It is interesting that you did a tribute show but you really

have mastered him. You got inside of what James Brown was like.

had to feel the spirit. I came from the same era that he came from.

Knowing the dancers that he did, back at that time we used to call

that dance the slide. I used to do that. Now, you have found yourself.

We have a documentary that tells your story, which is an amazing

62nd birthday. 62. We have a young man coming to the stage who has

It do you still have that cave? -- Cape? How did you stop being James

Brown and become Charles Bradley? did James Brown. I love James Brown.

He has been a legend in my time. I always wanted to know who was

Charles Bradley, so I am doing Charles Bradley. And how did that

come about, how did you make the change? I met a man called Tom

Brennan. He said, I want you to come out and meet Charles Bradley.

I went to one of his rehearsals in Staten Island. They were playing

some music. I liked the music. I said, play it. Give me the mike.

From then on, he moved to Brooklyn and we got acquainted, got to know

one another. That is when my brother had passed away and I was

in deep mourning. And Tom came to be a friend. And from that, two

records have come from all of that. It is great to have you here. We

look forward to hearing more from you in a moment. Thank you very
