CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

:13:04.:13:11.

Thank

:13:11.:13:11.

Thank you.

:13:11.:13:12.

Thank you. The

:13:12.:13:16.

Thank you. The wonderful and person that is Jamie Cullum. Save Your

:13:16.:13:24.

Soul from his new album, men tum. Now, -- momentum, now, another

:13:24.:13:33.

person with an amazing voice who told more of her life in her latest

:13:33.:13:39.

book. Welcome Tracey. Jamie said it was a good book, he read it.

:13:39.:13:43.

Talking about amazing voices, you have an amazing voice. When did you

:13:43.:13:48.

first realise that you had that sort of gift and music was going to

:13:48.:13:51.

be the thing for you? Well, I certainly didn't know at the

:13:51.:13:57.

beginning. I tell the story in the book, the first band I was in, I

:13:57.:14:02.

was the second guitarist, not the singer. We were rehearsing and one

:14:02.:14:10.

of the guys said, "Can you sing?" I said, "I am too shy. Can I get

:14:10.:14:20.
:14:20.:14:22.

inside the wardrobe." I got inside and sang sang David Bowie's Rebel,

:14:22.:14:26.

Rebel. That was the first moment I thought well, maybe I can sing.

:14:26.:14:30.

The confidence wasn't there at that point? No, it wasn't.

:14:30.:14:40.
:14:40.:14:42.

Your book has two titles. Yes, Disco Queen and How I Grew Up and

:14:42.:14:49.

Tried To Be A Pop star. There is people who think of me making indy

:14:49.:14:55.

records from a bedsit in Hull and there is other eem other people who

:14:55.:14:58.

think of me as making dance records. It is interesting when you are

:14:58.:15:01.

around for a long time, you start to realise that you mean different

:15:01.:15:06.

things to different people. And the other thing is you started

:15:06.:15:12.

in smaller groups and then you had huge global success and hit records

:15:12.:15:17.

in America and all that. Did that change your life dramatically?

:15:17.:15:21.

it did. We had periods where we were successful and periods when it

:15:21.:15:27.

died down again and the biggest period for us was after the success

:15:27.:15:31.

of Missing and the album that came after that. We had two or three

:15:31.:15:36.

years of being very successful and properly living the pop star

:15:36.:15:41.

lifestyle. What kind of lifestyle? Non-stop

:15:41.:15:44.

touring and recording and doing things like this.

:15:44.:15:52.

We have got a little bit of footage because you collaborated with lots

:15:52.:15:54.

of different people. Anyway, in this particular collaboration, I

:15:54.:16:03.

think, we have got you on this very show... Probably.

:16:03.:16:13.
:16:13.:16:29.

With Massive Attack. # Freedom

:16:29.:16:36.

# I can't say that better things will surely come my way

:16:36.:16:46.
:16:46.:16:57.

# I can't better things will surely APPLAUSE

:16:57.:17:01.

Beautiful singing. Beautiful singing. The last time you were on

:17:01.:17:06.

the show, you sang even more beautifully if I may say so at this

:17:06.:17:10.

piano probably. Can you remember anything of that evening? Well, I

:17:10.:17:14.

think that's the evening that I tell the story I have in my book.

:17:15.:17:19.

Courtney Love was on the show. At the beginning of the show when when

:17:19.:17:23.

everyone is around and before the show started, she put her guitar

:17:23.:17:30.

down and strode across that central central space... She is quite an

:17:30.:17:37.

opposing figure. She said, "I have to tell you, Kurt and I were huge

:17:37.:17:43.

fans. We do a cover of one of your Marine Girls songs.

:17:44.:17:50.

That was the first band I was in and very obscure and I thought, "Is

:17:50.:17:59.

that even true?" I thought maybe that's through and Curt's journals

:17:59.:18:06.

were released and there is his favourite albums and he goes public

:18:06.:18:10.

enemy, The Marine Girls. You can never tell what people are

:18:10.:18:16.

listening to, that's right and how it interconnects. Now, historically,

:18:16.:18:20.

I was trying to think of this earlier, but there are a number of

:18:20.:18:27.

people in music that work with their partners. I mean, Johnny Cash,

:18:27.:18:34.

June Carter and Ashford and Simpson, Ike and Tina Turner...

:18:34.:18:39.

It doesn't always work. Do you want to refer to that one? In music, it

:18:39.:18:43.

is a thing. What are the good and the bad parts about that, because

:18:43.:18:47.

you are, of course, musically and also a partner... Ben and I work

:18:48.:18:52.

together and we were a couple for years and sometimes I look back and

:18:52.:18:57.

think, "How did we make it work?" I do wonder. We got on well and

:18:57.:19:02.

partly you share a lot in common because you are engaged in the same

:19:02.:19:06.

process that you are inbled bli committed to. In a way that's good

:19:06.:19:10.

for a partnership. I am not sure where we can do that forever. We

:19:10.:19:14.

work more separately. We have a little bit more detachment from

:19:14.:19:17.

each other and that's probably essential.

:19:17.:19:27.
:19:27.:19:29.

It has been lovely talking to. I I look forward to having you on

:19:29.:19:31.

the show again and singing. Thank you.

:19:31.:19:36.

Good, I think you will agree, well you probably already do, it is

:19:37.:19:46.
:19:47.:20:01.

# Yeah, so, um, wait a second # Sold your liver but you're still

:20:01.:20:04.

# Sold my feelings now I'm hanging by a thread

:20:04.:20:08.

# Bad and it's creeping its way through my windows

:20:08.:20:11.

# And it's slithering under my door

:20:11.:20:13.

# And it's in my peripheral vision And it's pourin' up under my floor

:20:13.:20:16.

# And it's whispering into my eardrums

:20:16.:20:18.

# And it's telling me that I want more

# Yeah, you're ravenous you're champing at the bit

:21:09.:21:13.

# Just a cog next to a cog next to a pit

:21:13.:21:18.

# I would burn to break away and rest my ears

:21:18.:21:21.

# No more lightning no more solace in arrears

Primal

Primal Scream

:32:01.:32:01.

Primal Scream 2013.

:32:01.:32:08.

Primal Scream 2013. Yes, thank you so much.

:32:08.:32:14.

Before that, a lot of beautiful voices in here tonight, we enjoyed

:32:14.:32:20.

Ana Moura. We welcome now for a little chat about his new record,

:32:20.:32:30.
:32:30.:32:30.

Jamie Cullum. APPLAUSE

:32:30.:32:33.

Now, Momentum, it is a great record and it seems to me, listening to it,

:32:33.:32:36.

it is a different direction. Would I be right in thinking that? Yeah,

:32:36.:32:40.

you would. I decide to give my own songs more of a chance. Normally it

:32:40.:32:43.

has been half other people's songs and half my own songs and your own

:32:43.:32:48.

songs never get a chance when they are up against others and I decided

:32:48.:32:53.

I would give it a go and see if my songs could stand up on their own.

:32:53.:32:57.

They sound great. The two covers that you have done, what made you

:32:58.:33:07.
:33:08.:33:08.

choose those? I did another Cold Porter song song called Love For

:33:08.:33:18.

Sale. It is not like any other version of it I I have ever heard

:33:18.:33:28.

and why do it the same? The Cold Porter estate were really

:33:28.:33:32.

supportive. It seemed like an obvious thing and it sounds great.

:33:32.:33:36.

What inspires you when you write? am a bit of a believer in showing

:33:36.:33:41.

up to work, just showing up in front of the piano and seeing what

:33:41.:33:45.

comes out. I had two kids in the last couple of years so a lot of

:33:45.:33:50.

that fatherhood thing and just kind of manning up and finding out who

:33:50.:33:53.

you really are is more of the stuff that happens in this record really.

:33:53.:34:02.

You have been a great am bass dor for jazz, -- ambassador for jazz,

:34:02.:34:07.

do you see yourself as a jazz artist or a broader artist?

:34:07.:34:10.

jazz came later and my interest in jazz started out, I was trying to,

:34:10.:34:14.

I just wanted to be good at the instrument and every time I went to

:34:14.:34:22.

listen to jazz music I saw these gifted musicians who could do

:34:22.:34:28.

anything. I will always play jazz and doing that enables you you to

:34:28.:34:33.

try out this other stuff. What sort of music were you listening to

:34:33.:34:39.

before that? Iron Maiden and heavy metal. It was the guitar solicitor

:34:39.:34:49.
:34:49.:34:50.

owes. I was always -- solos. It was the guitar players. I did what my

:34:50.:34:54.

brother did! You can't go wrong to copy that thing. Like me, you have

:34:54.:35:00.

a show on Radio 2. And I particularly, I love doing the show

:35:01.:35:04.

because it means that I have to go through my record collection. It

:35:04.:35:08.

also means I can have dialogues with the dead and find all sorts of

:35:08.:35:12.

things that you couldn't play and it makes me go to second-hand

:35:13.:35:17.

record shops and find all the things and that's why I love it.

:35:17.:35:21.

What do you love about doing your radio show? I get to play this

:35:21.:35:28.

music to 7pm on a Tuesday night on Radio 2 and it is such an odd place

:35:28.:35:38.
:35:38.:35:42.

and you get 13-year-olds saying I had no idea that Robbie Coltrane

:35:42.:35:46.

who play the saxophone. It is a great opportunity. It is an

:35:46.:35:49.

extension, I am always making mixes for people. It is a dream to do

:35:49.:35:53.

that. It has been fantastic having you

:35:53.:36:01.

here as our guest. Let's finish with, I think we are in the key of

:36:02.:36:11.
:36:12.:36:32.

APPLAUSE Thank you so much, Jamie Cullum.

# So take a reach down inside your soul

:45:31.:45:35.

# And it's so deep down inside your soul

:45:38.:45:42.

# What you leave behind what you leave behind

:45:42.:45:48.

# I can hear it calling Can't you tell?

:45:48.:45:54.

# Are there some secrets embedded down

# In the frozen ground? in the frozen ground

:46:38.:46:41.

# Under a cold moon and a fractured sky

:46:41.:46:44.

# There's a universe there behind those eyes

# You're gonna make promises That you know you could

:46:48.:46:53.

# That you know you could

# I can hear it calling Can't you tell?

# I don't need a vision

:47:42.:47:44.

I'm just waiting on collisions of the brain and the heart

:47:44.:47:49.

# Impatient for decisions and some stormy revelations
