:04:31.:05:05.

legends. From Manchester, we have Go Go Penguin. From London, the one and

:05:25.:05:30.

from Sweden we welcome first aid kit.

:05:31.:05:42.

# Take me some place where there's music and there's laughter.

:05:43.:05:49.

# I don't know if I'm scared of dying.

:05:50.:05:54.

# But I'm scared of living too fast, too slow.

:05:55.:05:56.

# There's no starting over, no new beginnings.

:05:57.:06:02.

# Time races on, you've just gotta keep on keeping on.

:06:03.:06:04.

# Can't worry 'bout what's behind you.

# Or what's coming for you further up the road.

:06:15.:06:18.

# I try not to hold on to what is gone.

:06:19.:06:20.

# There's hope, there's a silver lining.

# a kind of like it. Thank U Band of Skulls.

:11:19.:12:26.

We welcome back into the studio, Mary J Blige. It is good to see you.

:12:27.:12:35.

You have this incredible new record and the London Sessions, made in

:12:36.:12:40.

London and a lot of the artists are new artists. How did it come about?

:12:41.:12:46.

It came about with me doing a song with disclosure. It blew up over

:12:47.:12:53.

here in London and did very well. Then it started blowing up Indian

:12:54.:12:58.

knighted States. The whole idea was to do an EP with disclosure. I just

:12:59.:13:04.

signed at Capitol records. I was speaking to the head of Capitol

:13:05.:13:10.

records, Steve Barnett about the idea of doing the EP with

:13:11.:13:15.

disclosure. He said don't do an EP with disclosure, do a whole album in

:13:16.:13:22.

London and surround yourself with the producers and writing and the

:13:23.:13:25.

amazing up and coming talent here. That is how it came about.

:13:26.:13:36.

Disclosure Sam Smith, Emily Sunday, great people. Emily said she had

:13:37.:13:42.

been in the studio with you. How does it compare working with these

:13:43.:13:46.

people because you have some of the top Americans, how does the methods

:13:47.:13:52.

of working change? Do the British people stop and have tea and cake?

:13:53.:13:56.

They definitely have their lunch more often than the people in the

:13:57.:14:03.

United States do. The hours are early, I was in the studio at 12

:14:04.:14:12.

noon every day. That is not normal. We usually do it at six p.m..

:14:13.:14:22.

We get there at 12, stop about 12.15 for lunch? No. We are working - once

:14:23.:14:31.

we get something. Once we get a song, everybody takes a break

:14:32.:14:36.

because we got it. We go, let's have lunch. That is how it goes. Did you

:14:37.:14:43.

look at stuff while you were here. Did you look around? I have been

:14:44.:14:50.

here several times. This time asat in parks I hadn't sat with before.

:14:51.:14:54.

There is a park with a gigantic hill. I don't know the name of it.

:14:55.:15:00.

There is benches and people, I don't know. Greenwich Park. Yeah. You

:15:01.:15:06.

didn't tell me. You went to Greenwich Park and you didn't tell

:15:07.:15:12.

me. Amazing. I discovered Shoreditch. I didn't know, all the

:15:13.:15:16.

years I had been coming here. I had no idea. This is the modern world.

:15:17.:15:23.

10, 20 years ago nobody went to the East End, except for me I played the

:15:24.:15:29.

piano there. It is a groovy bit. You are there. You are going to do a

:15:30.:15:33.

song you have written with Sam Smith. Tell us about that song? The

:15:34.:15:39.

song, that we are about to sing, is called If You're Not Loving You. It

:15:40.:15:46.

was written by Sam Smith alone. When I heard his reference, of course, it

:15:47.:15:51.

gave me goose pumps. I couldn't wait to record it. Yeah. That's the song.

:15:52.:15:56.

I hope we can do that in a moment here at the piano. Yeah. Mary J.

:15:57.:16:02.

Blige. APPLAUSE

:16:03.:16:04.

We will hear that song in a moment. First, we can go in this direction

:16:05.:16:07.

and well Hozier. -- welcome Hozier. # My lover's got humour.

:16:08.:16:17.

# She's the giggle at a funeral. # Knows everybody's disapproval.

:16:18.:16:20.

# I should've worshiped her sooner. # If the heavens ever did speak.

:16:21.:16:24.

# She's the last true mouthpiece. # Every Sunday's getting more bleak.

:16:25.:16:29.

# A fresh poison each week. # We were born sick.

:16:30.:16:34.

# You heard them say it. # My Church offers no absolutes.

:16:35.:16:38.

# She tells me, worship in the bedroom.

:16:39.:16:42.

# The only heaven I'll be sent to. # Is when I'm alone with you.

:16:43.:16:48.

# I was born sick. # But I love it.

:16:49.:16:51.

# Command me to be well. # Amen.

:16:52.:16:56.

# Amen. # Take me to church.

:16:57.:17:12.

# I'll worship like a dog. # At the shrine of your lies.

:17:13.:17:14.

# I'll tell you my sins. # And you can sharpen your knife.

:17:15.:17:18.

# Offer me that deathless death. # Good God, let me give you my life.

:17:19.:17:21.

# Take me to church. # I'll worship like a dog.

:17:22.:17:24.

# At the shrine of your lies. # I'll tell you my sins.

:17:25.:17:28.

# And you can sharpen your knife. # Offer me that deathless death.

:17:29.:17:32.

# Good God, let me give you my life. # If I'm a pagan of the good times.

:17:33.:17:42.

# My lover's the sunlight. # To keep the goddess on my side.

:17:43.:17:46.

# She demands sacrifice. # Drain the whole sea.

:17:47.:17:52.

# Get something shiny. # Something meaty for the main

:17:53.:17:55.

course. # That's a fine looking high horse.

:17:56.:17:58.

# What you got in the stable? # We've a lot of starving faithful.

:17:59.:18:03.

# That looks tasty. # That looks plenty.

:18:04.:18:06.

# This is hungry work. # Take me to church.

:18:07.:18:12.

# I'll worship like a dog. # At the shrine of your lies.

:18:13.:18:15.

# I'll tell you my sins. # Good God, let me give you my life.

:18:16.:18:20.

# Offer me that deathless death. # Take me to church.

:18:21.:18:38.

# I'll worship like a dog. # At the shrine of your lies.

:18:39.:18:41.

# I'll tell you my sins. # Good God, let me give you my life.

:18:42.:18:44.

# Offer me that deathless death. # No Masters or Kings.

:18:45.:18:53.

# When the Ritual begins. # There is no sweeter innocence.

:18:54.:18:56.

# Than our gentle sin. # In the madness and soil.

:18:57.:18:58.

# Of that sad earthly scene. # Only then I am human.

:18:59.:19:08.

# Only then I am clean. # Amen.

:19:09.:19:29.

# Amen. # Take me to church.

:19:30.:19:31.

# I'll worship like a dog. # At the shrine of your lies.

:19:32.:19:33.

# I'll tell you my sins. # And you can sharpen your knife.

:19:34.:19:36.

# Offer me that deathless death. # Good God, let me give you my life.

:19:37.:19:40.

# Take me to church. # I'll worship like a dog.

:19:41.:19:44.

# At the shrine of your lies. # I'll tell you my sins.

:19:45.:19:48.

# And you can sharpen your knife. # Offer me that deathless death.

:19:49.:19:52.

# Good God, let me give you my life. # You're never ever going to cover

:21:24.:21:30.

# Always hopeful that I'll make a change

:21:31.:21:40.

# CHEERING AND

:23:20.:23:19.

APPLAUS Thank you. The wonderful Mary J. Blige. If

:23:20.:23:36.

You're Not Loving You from the London Sessions. Mary J has been

:23:37.:23:40.

here in London, England. While they all had lunch, as you heard. Before

:23:41.:23:44.

that we enjoyed Hozier. CHEERING AND APPLAUS

:23:45.:23:50.

Now we have a great legend joined by a fabulous newey, joined by Anna

:23:51.:23:53.

Calvi, it's Marianne Faithfull. # How many times have I found myself

:23:54.:24:25.

in this place, without reason. # So many times to go round

:24:26.:24:30.

and round in despair. # Looking for someone,

:24:31.:24:45.

looking for something. # Falling back into myself

:24:46.:25:04.

# And into the place I love in this garden, I've found my heart

:25:05.:25:58.

# Without reason # Or excuses

:25:59.:26:08.

# Not many hearts can feel and feel the blade

:26:09.:26:14.

# Too many hearts that have never seen love's face

:26:15.:26:19.

# Looking for someone # Looking for something and you

:26:20.:26:28.

# Looking for someone # Looking something and you

:26:29.:26:36.

# Looking for you # Looking for you

:26:37.:26:42.

# Looking for you #

:26:43.:27:35.

CHEERING AND APPLAUS

:27:36.:27:44.

The wonderful, Marianne Faithfull with Falling Back. And Give My Love

:27:45.:27:56.

To London with Anna Calvi. We welcome some Mercury nominees who

:27:57.:28:00.

are splendid. It's GoGo Penguin. # wait to face the burning heat.

:28:01.:32:12.

# thinking about my baby. # so in love I can hardly eat.

:32:13.:32:40.

# my baby is so sweet. # when my baby found me.

:32:41.:32:51.

# I was three days on a drunken sin. # I woke up with just the walls

:32:52.:32:58.

around me. # I didn't care much how long I

:32:59.:33:07.

lived. # I thought I had dreams her.

:33:08.:33:14.

# she never asked me once about the wrong guy did.

:33:15.:33:25.

# hold my body down. # I'm going home to her.

:33:26.:33:44.

# when my time comes around. # my baby would never fret naan.

:33:45.:33:58.

# what my hands and my body done. # I was kissing my baby.

:33:59.:34:06.

# she put her love down slow and sweet.

:34:07.:34:16.

# when my time comes around. # lay me gently in the cold, dark

:34:17.:34:25.

earth. # I'm going home to her.

:34:26.:34:34.

# when my time comes around. # lay me gently in the cold, dark

:34:35.:34:38.

earth. Before that, the skills of GoGo

:34:39.:35:13.

Penguin. Now one of the great legends of music. She has celebrated

:35:14.:35:19.

50 years in music, we are delighted to have here, Marianne Faithfull.

:35:20.:35:26.

Good to see you. Marvellous to see you. It is a great treat to have

:35:27.:35:32.

been here. You are sounding better than ever with Anna Calvi. It is

:35:33.:35:42.

almost, give my love to London. It is slightly sarcastic. Do you like

:35:43.:35:51.

London? I am kind of fond of London, but I have had my ups and downs with

:35:52.:35:56.

London, especially with the media. I don't like the British press.

:35:57.:36:04.

Where'd do you live now? Between Dublin, or Ireland in general, and

:36:05.:36:11.

Paris. So Dennis and champagne. A lovely treat. The first song you

:36:12.:36:18.

played, you have Anna Calvi, you have other great guests? I wrote

:36:19.:36:24.

that song with Anna Calvi. She picked up her little guitar -

:36:25.:36:30.

wellhead big guitar. She is a little girl, with a guitar. I had the

:36:31.:36:39.

lyrics and she is so talented. I immediately change them because I

:36:40.:36:43.

thought she was too talented for these lyrics and I have to make them

:36:44.:36:47.

better. It is a bit unnerving but somebody when you suddenly change

:36:48.:36:55.

it. But she was perfectly able. You have lots of other great people?

:36:56.:37:03.

Yes, Nick Kaye, who I have worked with before. Steve Earle is so

:37:04.:37:27.

wonderful. He wrote, Give My Love To London with me. You have to say, if

:37:28.:37:35.

you need to change the lyrics to fit into the music, you can. Bruised

:37:36.:37:48.

ego! I think they are big enough men to take it. No, they are allowed to

:37:49.:37:54.

change it, it is me with the bruised ego. You have been in an opera,

:37:55.:38:07.

Seven Deadly Sins? It was written in the 20s. It wasn't a big hit and it

:38:08.:38:18.

has never been a big hit. People don't seem to like it. It is almost

:38:19.:38:25.

still, even now, because it is very anti-religious and very antifamily.

:38:26.:38:30.

What are the seven deadly sins, just for the people at home. Pride,

:38:31.:38:50.

sloth, anger, lust, greed... Food, that one. Gluttony? Gluttony!

:38:51.:39:00.

Avarice and envy. What is the worst? Envy. I think we have learnt

:39:01.:39:10.

something there. You have been making fantastic records and you

:39:11.:39:14.

have toured with those, which was delightful. But I would like to go

:39:15.:39:23.

back to the beginning. It would be a lovely thing to do.

:39:24.:39:40.

# it is the evening of the day. # I sit and watch the children play.

:39:41.:40:02.

# smiling faces, I can see. # but not for me.

:40:03.:40:13.

# I sit and watch as tears go by. # my riches cannot buy every second.

:40:14.:40:29.

# I want to hear the children sing. # all I hear is the sound of rain

:40:30.:40:41.

falling on the ground. # I sit and watch as tears go by.

:40:42.:41:05.

# doing things I used to do. # they think I am mean.

:41:06.:41:17.

# I sit and watch as tears go by. The wonderful, Marianne Faithfull.

:41:18.:41:28.

And now, first aid kit. # The sun shone high

:41:29.:41:47.

those few summer days. # But just

:41:48.:41:59.

as the moon it shines straight. # What if our hard work ends

:42:00.:42:19.

in despair? # What

:42:20.:42:37.

if the road won't take me there? # Oh, I wish, for once,

:42:38.:42:39.

we could stay gold. # What if to love

:42:40.:42:43.

and be loved is not enough? # What if I fall

:42:44.:42:46.

and can't bear to get up? # Oh, I wish, for once,

:42:47.:42:49.

we could stay gold. # We're

:42:50.:42:55.

on our way through rugged land. # Top of that mountain

:42:56.:43:10.

we wanted to stand. # But there is only forward,

:43:11.:43:16.

no other way. # Tomorrow was your hope

:43:17.:43:30.

at the end of the day. # What if our hard work ends

:43:31.:43:36.

in despair? # What

:43:37.:43:49.

if the road won't take me there? # Oh, I wish, for once,

:43:50.:43:52.

we could stay gold. # What if to love

:43:53.:43:56.

and be loved is not enough? # What if I fall

:43:57.:44:00.

and can't bear to get up? # Oh, I wish, for once,

:44:01.:44:02.

we could stay gold. # All of my dreams,

:44:03.:44:07.

they fall and form a bridge. # All of my dreams,

:44:08.:44:22.

they fall and form a bridge. # Of memories where I

:44:23.:44:34.

can't get back to. # What if our hard work ends

:44:35.:44:56.

in despair? # What

:44:57.:44:58.

if the road won't take me there? # Oh, I wish, for once,

:44:59.:45:00.

we could stay gold. # What if to love

:45:01.:45:03.

and be loved is not enough? # What if I fall

:45:04.:45:06.

and can't bear to get up? # Oh, I wish, for once,

:45:07.:45:08.

we could stay gold. # All of my dreams,

:45:09.:45:12.

they fall and form a bridge. CHEERING AND

Marianne Faithfull with Give My Love To London much before that we

enjoyed First Aid Kit. It's sad because we have to say that the

greatest British jazz trumpeter, Kenny Wheeler has passed away. We

:50:06.:50:10.

have a clip of him. He is introduced by Ronnie Scott who doesn't seem to

:50:11.:50:16.

move his lips while introducing him. Let's pay tribute to Kenny Wheeler.

:50:17.:50:21.

He's an example of what can be done by a non--American musician playing

:50:22.:50:23.

perfectly valid jazz music. The wonderful, late, Kenny Wheeler.
