# Woo, underneath the disco light, it's alright

:13:34.:13:37.

# Don't let this be our final song #.

:13:38.:13:42.

Thank you, MO, Final Song, from her album out next year. We will be

:13:43.:14:04.

hearing more songs on this show. Now we welcome from Los Angeles, their

:14:05.:14:08.

second time on the show, it is Warpaint!

:14:09.:14:27.

# That leads me, babe, to where I belong

:14:28.:14:48.

# Because of you, I know where I belong

:14:49.:15:01.

# To think, to think that it was wrong for me

:15:02.:15:41.

# I want, I want it, I want it all...

:15:42.:15:45.

# I want, I want, I want it all so sweet

:15:46.:15:50.

# You got the moves, you got the moves

:15:51.:15:53.

# You got the moves, you got the moves

:15:54.:16:01.

Thank you, Warpaint. That's from their album. Now, I'm going to be

:16:02.:18:47.

discussing something in the corner with an incredibly talented woman

:18:48.:18:51.

who we are so pleased to have back in the studio, Emeli Sande. Really

:18:52.:18:58.

nice to see you back here. I would like to congratulate you on a

:18:59.:19:02.

marvellous new record. It sounds wonderful. It must have been quite a

:19:03.:19:07.

lot of stress. Because your last record, which was your first,

:19:08.:19:12.

really, was such a tremendous success, not just here, but

:19:13.:19:16.

everywhere, people loved you all over the world. Every country was

:19:17.:19:20.

mad for you. Was there a lot of pressure trying to follow that up?

:19:21.:19:25.

Initially I tried not to think about it but then I found it started to

:19:26.:19:32.

interfere with making music. I saw naughty boy, a talented man, I will

:19:33.:19:37.

barge in on him later. We approached the first album with no expectation,

:19:38.:19:41.

just the love of music so I tried to get into that head frame and I hope

:19:42.:19:46.

we achieved that. Long Live The Angels. What inspired the title?

:19:47.:19:52.

From 2012 until now, the world has changed so much and I feel that

:19:53.:19:56.

Angels needing courage in. I feel I really choose my side and who I want

:19:57.:20:02.

to support. Long Live The Angels is for all the survivors out there and

:20:03.:20:04.

all the people doing great things in the world. Was there a particular

:20:05.:20:11.

moment for you when you're enormous global success, was there a minute

:20:12.:20:14.

when it suddenly became apparent to you that you were a success? Yes. I

:20:15.:20:21.

performed at the White House and at that moment I thought, wow, this has

:20:22.:20:25.

really taken me beyond any dream or expectation I had. When I was

:20:26.:20:30.

performing for the Obamas, I thought, this is a pinch me moment.

:20:31.:20:34.

When I look back on that day and that photo, I can't believe it

:20:35.:20:39.

happened to me. That is great. You are a great fan of a lot of old

:20:40.:20:43.

music as well as new music. Nina Simone is a person you like. We did

:20:44.:20:50.

one of her songs together years ago. Is she still an influence on you?

:20:51.:20:56.

Absolutely. As I grow older, I realise her depth more and more. As

:20:57.:21:00.

a musician, she took it to places a lot of people are afraid to take it.

:21:01.:21:04.

She is still an influence, and her bravery in music was the biggest

:21:05.:21:10.

thing that inspired me. She is great, a unique sounding person. The

:21:11.:21:15.

next song you are going to be doing for us, tell us what inspired that

:21:16.:21:20.

song? Shakes was one of the first songs I wrote for the album. It

:21:21.:21:25.

really set the bar. I wanted to take the truth of the music. I wrote that

:21:26.:21:32.

song with naughty boy. It isn't raw emotion and describes the depths of

:21:33.:21:36.

life and how deep you can take love, and sometimes it is ugly but it is

:21:37.:21:40.

always real. I remember in the studio session, Naughty Boy said,

:21:41.:21:49.

you can do it better. We did one take of the song and I think we

:21:50.:21:54.

captured the realness. He kept -- he pushed me. He is a great producer.

:21:55.:22:00.

He is always pushing you further. He has not laid-back, constantly

:22:01.:22:04.

pushing. He is probably one of the few people that gets me very angry

:22:05.:22:08.

but I think it works. I think it works in the studio and it gets to

:22:09.:22:13.

the depths of what I really want to save. I will challenge him to find

:22:14.:22:18.

out what he does to get you angry. Emeli Sande. How marvellous to see

:22:19.:22:24.

the huge success patch in our ears. We go from one distinctive artist to

:22:25.:22:28.

another and we welcome from New York, Regina Spektor.

:22:29.:22:35.

# Why you searched, but never found her

:22:36.:23:52.

# But you're just as smart as you're blind

:23:53.:29:58.

Wilco, Cry All Day. Wonderful. Before that, we enjoyed Regina

:29:59.:30:50.

Spektor at the piano. Now a dazzling artist who recently won a

:30:51.:30:57.

prestigious award. She is now with us, we welcome MO.

:30:58.:31:00.

# I miss... All yours

:31:01.:31:09.

# Have no cares in the world, have no fears, have no money, ah

:31:10.:31:12.

# Live the life like we're rich, super rich, and the honey, ah

:31:13.:31:16.

# What we had, was it good, I will always remember, ah

:31:17.:31:20.

# And now we're changing direction, I'll never forget ya

:31:21.:31:26.

# If you know me then I'm here if you want it, ah

:31:27.:32:10.

# Got my phone when you're low Got the pain in your stomach, ah

:32:11.:32:14.

# Cos what we had, was it good? I will always remember, ah

:32:15.:32:18.

# And now we're changing direction I'll never forget ya

:32:19.:32:22.

# No, I don't know what I really wanna nowhere

:32:23.:33:10.

# Like anyone knew real stuff that I'm gonna ey, ey, gonna ey, ey

:33:11.:33:14.

# Let my hair blow wild like it was summer, yeah, yeah

:33:15.:33:18.

# It's gonna be all right, be all right

:33:19.:33:21.

The wonderful Emeli Sande, Shakes. So now, at the table over here, I'm

:33:22.:37:45.

going to be talking to another incredibly talented woman. We

:37:46.:37:51.

welcome Anoushka Shankar. Welcome. Very good to see you. You've got

:37:52.:37:58.

Naughty Boy behind you, your producer, so watch out. -- a

:37:59.:38:03.

producer. It's great to have you on the show at last. Your sound is

:38:04.:38:09.

unique. Thank you. When did you first learn the sitar? I started

:38:10.:38:17.

learning when I was seven or eight from my father, Ravi Shankar. Even

:38:18.:38:21.

before that, I was travelling around. He was on tour and I grew up

:38:22.:38:25.

around the news it. It was in my atmosphere. ! He was one of the

:38:26.:38:32.

first people, the person, that introduced Indian classical music,

:38:33.:38:37.

all of that music to a western ear, a mainstream western ear. Is work

:38:38.:38:43.

with George Harrison, the Beatles, all of those things. Were you aware

:38:44.:38:48.

of that when you were growing up? You couldn't not be. All of those

:38:49.:38:52.

people were in our lives. You could see how people saw him. A part of

:38:53.:38:56.

growing up around him was knowing that. But it was music I loved and

:38:57.:39:01.

wanted to play. All of that is separate and outside. From him, one

:39:02.:39:08.

of the things he did that was great was mashing lots of different sorts

:39:09.:39:12.

of music up. There were not any rules. Have you learned that from

:39:13.:39:18.

him? In a way. The older he got, he was a classical musician as well.

:39:19.:39:23.

I've seen this example, that being a classical musician didn't have to be

:39:24.:39:27.

separate from innovative and creative. A lot of people at that

:39:28.:39:30.

time thought it had to be one or the other. He started that in our music

:39:31.:39:36.

world. He was the one to show that you could be creative, break

:39:37.:39:39.

boundaries, connect with other cultures and be a classical

:39:40.:39:43.

musician. We've got a clip of you with your father at the symphony

:39:44.:39:48.

hall in Birmingham in 1997. A happy memory? I was 15, so don't blame the

:39:49.:39:54.

outfit on my current tastes! Symphony hall in Birmingham. Can you

:39:55.:40:43.

remember that evening? Not really. I started playing with him when I was

:40:44.:40:47.

13 and I was on the road from then until when he passed away if you

:40:48.:40:50.

years ago. I was also touring separately. We did hundreds of

:40:51.:40:58.

shows. Your new record has lots of contributions from different and

:40:59.:41:03.

interesting people. We've got some amazing guest artists. MIA is there,

:41:04.:41:11.

Vanessa Redgrave as a spoken word bit on one song. Another wonderful

:41:12.:41:16.

contributor is playing with me tonight, a co-writer on lots of

:41:17.:41:21.

stuff. He plays the Hang. Music from all over the world. What are you

:41:22.:41:28.

going to play for us? We are doing a portion of a 13 minute song old

:41:29.:41:34.

Crossing The Rubicon. The Rubicon is the river that used to surround

:41:35.:41:38.

Rome. If you wanted to invade, you had to cross the river. So it is, if

:41:39.:41:42.

you have crossed, there is no going back. We will be discussing that

:41:43.:41:49.

with Naughty Boy in a moment. The fantastic Anoushka Shankar! We will

:41:50.:41:54.

be hearing from her in a moment. Seamlessly, while I was chatting in

:41:55.:42:02.

there, this has been placed there. So now we go over and welcome

:42:03.:42:03.

Warpaint. # You always seem to make my

:42:04.:42:42.

heart stop and # I can tell that there's

:42:43.:42:48.

something in your eyes # I want you now

:42:49.:42:56.

I want you all over me # Can't you tell me

:42:57.:43:05.

all your secrets? # Do you remember me

:43:06.:43:10.

the same way I do you? # Can't you tell me

:43:11.:44:00.

all your secrets? # You're good, you're

:44:01.:44:11.

good, you're good # You're good,

:44:12.:45:35.

you're good, you're good Be remarkably talented Anoushka

:45:36.:50:39.

Shankar, Crossing The Rubicon. Before that, we enjoyed Warpaint.

:50:40.:50:46.

Amazing, the way she plays. I will be passed by somebody over here.

:50:47.:50:54.

Naughty boy, great to have you. Who are you enjoying? Earlier, you said

:50:55.:50:59.

something about vibrations. Everyone in the room, but clearly, Anoushka,

:51:00.:51:04.

Regina and Emeli, I feel I am in heaven. A lot of great female

:51:05.:51:12.

vibrations. Everyone responds differently, and thank you for

:51:13.:51:23.

Shakes. I make Emeli angry sometimes but that song in particular, for me,

:51:24.:51:27.

what it represents is loving someone more than they deserve and still

:51:28.:51:31.

feeling that you are not loving them enough. We have all been there. We

:51:32.:51:37.

have been there and back! Very good to have you here, one of the great

:51:38.:51:41.

producers and writers of our day. Thanks so much. And now we welcome

:51:42.:51:47.

back the wonderful sound of Wilco. # Where you gonna go

:51:48.:51:55.

in your winter coat? # I wonder what you're hiding

:51:56.:51:58.

cos it's not too cold # Facing the blast

:51:59.:52:00.

and the moon and the math # But you still never know

:52:01.:52:35.

where your soul is attached # Now where you gonna go

:52:36.:52:49.

like a cobra coiled? # Sweating in a sweater,

:52:50.:53:37.

you got too much style # Standing strong as

:53:38.:53:41.

the waves roll over Lean On.

:53:42.:58:16.

For that we enjoyed Wilco. And now, let's enjoy Emeli Sande.

:58:17.:58:20.

# We hold the future in the palm of our hands

:58:21.:58:34.

# I'm talking 'bout the forever, baby

:58:35.:59:16.

# And we've run out of all the silver and gold

:59:17.:59:37.

# Will you still wanna be my someone to hold?

:59:38.:59:42.

# See, I would you, but you already know

:59:43.:59:46.

# It's bringing in my heart like thunder

:59:47.:00:27.

# I'll be there through the lo-lo-lo-lows

:00:28.:00:45.

Thank you, Emeli Sande. You can see more on our website. We will be back

:00:46.:01:52.

on Tuesday at 10pm. Can we get a groove going from over there,

:01:53.:01:56.

please? We have had such a lovely time with all the people this

:01:57.:02:00.

evening. Don't forget to put your clocks and watches back. Have you

:02:01.:02:05.

had fun being with us this evening? Well, in that case, let's thank our

:02:06.:02:13.

guests. Emeli Sande. Wilco. Anoushka Shankar. Naughty boy over there.

:02:14.:02:33.

Regina Spektor. Warpaint. MO. And Emeli Sande.
