It's a great record you've got here. It's the first one...

It's almost 20 years. Why have we had to wait so long?

I've been sitting in the sun a lot, really,

just contemplating my life.

Where have you been sitting in the sun?

In Thailand, in Asia, so I thought, 20 years,

it was a great album that was,

and I thought, "It's about time I produced a really good album."

And there's 16 tracks on there

and there's a lot of diversity with it as well, which I like.

Because you're like a producer, really, aren't you? Yeah.

In that you bring lots of different artists together.

Who have you brought together? With this, I mean,

I was doing the Pat Metheny track on there with Pat

which is Are You Going With Me?

Which is my all-time favourite record.

And then Jose James, from New York,

we've been speaking a long time about putting this record together.

And it's basically the Barry track that I wrote, I'd always wanted to redo that.

I thought the original version was a bit macabre, so I thought... Which you wrote with him?

Yeah, I wrote the track for him, which was Truth,

which is kind of a lost track, really.

It was one of those things that no-one ever realised

I had wrote that and it was a ballad.

So, I thought, "Let me just revisit the whole album."

And especially working with Matt and the Heritage guys,

it's been a really good, a good aspect to the music.

Of course, you were a pioneer of drum and bass.

Where does that come from in the first place?

I think it was looking at Detroit techno music, really, and looking at

what was happening with European kind of house music and stuff.

And I think we kind of derived that,

I mean, breakbeat, New York, was my whole thing,

hip-hop in the '80s was a big influence.

I think drummers were really my thing. I studied a lot of really good drummers

and Art Blakey was one of the guys I looked at.

A lot of pneumatic tape of Art Blakey stuff. He's great, isn't he? I mean, amazing.

what you're doing, which is on this screen here.

What's that footage from there that we've just seen?

That was from... We did two nights at Ronnie Scott's.

And Sally Green, a friend of mine, said,

"You've got to come and do this."

And I enjoyed putting that together with Heritage Ensemble.

I mean, some of the talent coming through like

Natalie Duncan, Tyler Daley, Children of Zeus,

those guys from Manchester, there's some amazing talent up north.

And I like working with new people,

Terri Walker is an amazing voice, she's been around,

Terri is an amazing, amazing singer,

so I actually wrote a few songs for her,

and the same with Natalie, just finding that place where

no-one's going, I think, and that's what's important.

So we did that and that kind of spiralled the whole idea,

so we got... July, we have the full Heritage Orchestra

at Henley Festival, which is going to be great.

In November we do a countrywide tour for the Ensemble,

which is going to be The Journey Man tour. We look forward to seeing you

there with The Journey Man record. Thank you.

You've got this great compilation CD of hip-hop bangers, has come out.

Exactly. And for three decades, you've been broadcasting,

DJing, rap and hip-hop. How did you first get into this music?

I mean, I first started... When I was just starting as a DJ,

was as hip-hop began and I could just see the power of this music,

the voice of a generation and I just... It was my passion.

I just fell in love with it, man,

and I wanted to rep the culture from that day to now

so I have been tearing down the radio on a Saturday night,

Capital Xtra, doing it real big. Ripping down clubs, it's what we do.

Now, hip-hop club bangers, what I want to know is

how did you choose the different people to go on there?

It's easy because it's the records we still play. Yeah.

So I played them the day they came out to this day.

So a banger is something that...

It does not stop. Undeniable.

It's historic? It is.

Just like myself, legends never die. Yeah.

And we are the heart in the game.

What do you love about him?

I listen to a lot of Afro beats and, you know, I listen to hip-hop, man.

I mean... What I'm sort of getting at,

once somebody told me that Buddy Rich,

the wild man drummer of jazz, they went round his house and he was

listening to sort of Floyd Cramer, very easy listening music at night.

The air was filled with relaxing smoke and everything and

he was just like... Exactly.

I wondered if you went back home and listen to Beethoven or...?

I just don't do drugs. No. Beethoven?

I just happened to be doing a gig in Vienna the other day

and I went into Teuchtler Records, open in 1948,

and I got this signed record of Louis Armstrong.

I looked at it earlier and I thought, do you know,

He is the great legend of New Orleans, but the new next great

legend of New Orleans is the man that here tonight, Trombone Shorty.

CHEERING Really great to see you, Troy.

Listen, it's great.

Now, he's one of the great fathers. What was special about him?

Well, you know, every time he played, each and every note,

it meant something to him, you know?

His horn was very bright when he played and he had a great smile

and a great personality, the same way that we do in New Orleans,
