Um...

Congratulations on your new record,

-just about to come out, any minute now.

-Yeah.

-Scream Above The Sounds is the title.

-Yeah.

Where does that come from?

I guess it's a bit of a comment on...

There's a lot of intrusion

and 24/7 bad news in people's lives these days, and I guess there's

a lot of small, good things that people could be celebrating as well,

in life, and just shout about that, really.

Well, give us an example of the sort of thing you mean.

Well, Caught By The Wind was written in the aftermath of, like,

the Bataclan, we've played the Bataclan in Paris.

So, the verse started talking about "the wolves in the woods

"don't play by the rules", kind of thing, and I thought the song

was kind of going to go down a darker angle,

but then, the chorus started celebrating all the innocent stuff

I did when I was a kid,

like lying on my mother's roof sunbathing,

looking at the aeroplanes and making shapes out of clouds

and all that sort of stuff.

So, it went on to be much more of a celebratory song

than a dark song, you know?

-This is now your tenth record.

-Yeah.

-And 20 years since you started, really.

-Yeah.

I mean... And you've stayed on, been a huge success, songs get better

and better - what do you think is the key to doing that?

Songs. I think the song's always been

the governor of our band, really. When we started out,

we thought a record deal was the first rung on the ladder.

But I wanted a catalogue of music, like, you know,

Creedence Clearwater Revival or The Kinks, or...

-I wanted songs to, you know, stand the test of time.

-Yeah, yeah.

That's all I ever wanted to achieve.

It wasn't about fame and money and all that sort of stuff.

-Well, we've got a little clip...

-Have you?

-Yes, a little clip, and we're going to go down memory lane...

-Are we?

-..together, yes, in the back of a transit van...

That was good!

Do you have any recollections at all of 1997?

I've got recollections of that.

I was told, we go round in a circle

and the first one to cock it up is when we stop.

And I looked across, and there was Ry Cooder,

the Buena Vista Social Club, Stevie Winwood,

and I walked up to the mic and I hit my nose, my chin, my teeth,

and I had to stop, and I was the first one to make it all stop, yeah.

-Oh, no!

-Because they made us

stand on those little podiums that we used in the video.

I tell you what, I noticed there were

little birthday cakes on there.

-Yeah, but it sounded all right, though.

-It did sound all right.

It did sound all right.

It's the first time I'd ever seen the back of my head, that was.

That's the great thing about television.

If somebody says, "Why did you start in television?"

-So I can see the back of my head.

-Exactly, yeah.

And you're going to be going on tour, I guess.

Do you look forward to touring?

Yeah, because we've got ten albums' worth of material now to pick

and choose from. So, we've got this catalogue...

I always loved people like Tom Petty and stuff like that,

so you'd see these bands where there wasn't, like,

a big frontman prancing about, it was just about a catalogue of songs.

-We can do that now.

-And when you go on tour, do you go tourist,

do you go and look at things when you're...?

We get in bed earlier. It tends to just be curry and beer.

Curry and beer?

-We've got Curry Finder on the phone.

-Really?

-Yeah.

Do you have a curry straight after the show?

We do tend to have a curry after the show, yeah.

Mother India, in Edinburgh and Glasgow...

Yeah, but my thing is, the timing of it, right?

So, you want to come offstage, you walk offstage, the applause is, if

you're lucky, still going, and there is the curry on the table, there.

It's not like we're going to wait around,

we haven't got time for that!

-No, the lamb has to be still hot from the takeaway.

-Exactly.

People don't realise, when bands are on tour, everybody,

all the artists in this room, am I right -

the most important thing is what you're going to eat that night!

-Exactly. Because it's not easy, is it?

-It's not easy.

Everyone has had their dinner, but we haven't,

-we've got to wait till late.

-There's a lot of waiting around!

But we don't want sympathy, we want applause,

for the wonderful Kelly Jones!
