Oh, I tell you, nothing like a military boot camp

with a bit of song and dance thrown in to kick things off.

is just a taste of what's in store for our 40 remaining boys...

..because tonight is collaboration night.

Our boys have been put into five groups of eight

to perform alongside singing superstars.

how are you going to decide who stays and who goes?

The guys have got to stand out,

but they've got to work within the group.

I want to see them working together as a team,

cos when people truly work together as a team, great things happen.

I mean, it's quite difficult,

when you're just kind of fresh-faced, young start-outs

not to get overawed by the person you're working with.

I mean, you've just got to make sure you use that excitement

and those nerves to bring out the best in yourself.

Taking the final spot in our panel,

it's tonight's guest judge. Who goes there?

I'm completely thrilled about our new judge tonight.

She's got the most incredible voice.

She's got more energy than all of us put together.

She doesn't even need a second name, gang.

So, what can these guys performing tonight do

to make sure they get through to the live shows?

You know, at this point, they're not in a band yet,

they're all still in competition with one another,

so we want to see their light sparkle tonight.

-Lulu, you famously teamed up with Take That 23 years ago.

Yes, I'm the oldest person here!

What was it like, collaborating with the gang?

Well, I've done a few collaborations in my life,

but I think the one with Take That was the best.

His charisma is outstanding.

That voice just surprised me!

Projection is incredible.

We're desperately trying to capture the energy of Take That,

and you have all of that.

I loved your voice.

I see something in you.

It was like a big light beaming off the stage.

I thought you were terrific.

You stand out. You're doing all the right things.

At a rehearsal space in leafy North London...

Well, that couldn't have gone better!

I was actually speaking to my mum all week,

and I've been, like, "I want it to be Olly Murs."

Such a good group of boys.

-We're going to bond, like, loads.

-Mm.

-They're going to take three away.

-It's brutal, that.

As with all the groups tonight,

the boys are thrust into 40 hours of vocal and dance rehearsals

to learn a six-minute spectacle of songs

that their superstar has previously performed.

This is sassy, this, boys.

-Very sassy!

Not all of the boys are finding their dancing feet...

This guy over here, like, he does ballet.

I play the guitar!

I haven't got a piano to hide behind,

so I feel a bit exposed,

cos I've got, like, chunky hobbit feet.

..and student Tyler's lack of confidence

has caught the choreographer's attention.

When you deliver your performance,

there's quite a few moments where we lose your eyes.

You have got big characters in your group,

and I don't want you to get lost.

I know the choreography thing's just the confidence, and selling it.

That's something I've got to work on,

cos when you're on stage, you're there to perform, you know?

What better way to improve their performance

than with a trip to the Royal Albert Hall,

to sneak into the rehearsals of Mr Charisma himself?

That's what we've got to try and nail, boys.

Thinking about this performance, what I was told was,

always remember the first time that I auditioned.

Always go out to try and impress people,

and for them to be like, "Wow, who are these guys?"

-You know we're dancing with girls...

What's the best advice to stay on-task?

Make it feel like it's cool - "Oh, how you doing, babe? Yeah, cool.

"What's going on, yeah?"

Not feeling like, "Oh, my God,

"there's a really good-looking girl there, I can't look."

Nick - Nick was nervous in his first audition, wasn't he?

-He was out of his depth.

-but I think he's the naughtiest one in that group.

I loved Scott in the audition. I thought he was great -

but tonight I felt he was hiding a little bit.

Always a tricky one, for me, this.

Tyler's amazing. He's got a special something -

-he's not experienced yet.

-He's got a ton of bad habits.

-I think the part is right for him...

You know? He could quite easily fit in.

-My problem with him was that it was a bit old-school musical.

I really like him.

There was something about him

that my eye kept going back to all the time.

It's such a tough group.

We've definitely got some great singers. Some great movers.

You pulled that out the bag.

After weighing up the pros and cons of each of these boys,

the judges have chosen their final five.

only five of you will go on to battle it out as a band

for that amazing prize.

You know, losing out is the hardest part of this business

but I tell you something,

I would love to be a fly on the wall in the next audition you walk into

because you will take all of this experience,

everything you've learned over the past few weeks and you'll be

head and shoulders above everybody else in that room.

Well, I was just working in a cafe and then he walked in.

I didn't think I was going to get this far.

The lads are absolutely fantastic.

I know they're going to do great things

and we've had an absolutely fantastic time.

Stupidly, it didn't cross my mind.

I just thought the five people who would be through would be

delighted but it is tinged with sadness because you're saying

goodbye to the others.

It really is. Saying goodbye to them is like... It was really difficult.

We knew it would be really difficult and whichever way it went

we were going to be sad, win or lose.

I'm just going to go to the judges. That was a really hard one.

It could have been any combination.

With these guys, some are stronger vocally and some are really

tight as dancers and can sing but all together it was kind of

like a potpourri or a very good

ingredient for a delicious cake.

So, the first of tonight's first five bands has been formed.

I'm very surprised.

It's completely different to what I normally do in Essex.

Between us we've got a really good blend of ingredients.

We have good singers, good dancers, we have charisma, we have the looks.

Probably just going to mess up on live TV.

It's such a shame to say goodbye to the other guys.

Special effects trainee Damien is a little out of his comfort zone.

Dancing is my worst enemy.

I could learn to dance for a few years and still be really

stiff and not get the movements right.

You see people, it just comes naturally to them.

I look at guys like yourself and yourself and you

-all know how to dance.

-Barely.

I used to be a really good dancer before I had kids.

As soon as I popped one out, I brought out the dad dance.

Smooth moves, Daddio. Hopefully your singing fares better.

HIGH-PITCHED VOCALISING

These are great songs but they are diva songs. They are quite high.

Dylan's not totally happy and I think Harry is probably

struggling the most with where it sits in his voice.

Despite all the problems,

and ignoring the fact that they're battling each other for

a place in the band, the boys are getting on like a house on fire.

Honestly, the chemistry in this group is amazing.

Everyone's helping each other and I'm already learning things

from a few of the other guys.

-Real good vibe, isn't it?

I'm joking.

The boys head to Manchester for two last days of rehearsals and

things are starting to get real.

We're in a bit of a scary place with the Beverley Knight group.

The vocals are really suffering.

As soon as they start doing the choreography, they lose all

the harmonies and it just sounds like a bit of a mess.

It's a bit of a risky arrangement. You know what I mean?

My God, what is going on here? It's all back to square one, isn't it?

I think he's got a lot of heart and soul and he did something

special on stage which some of the other guys can't do.

Normally you've got to always be performing out to the front.

As soon as you turn your back your star power goes.

He was turning around to the other guys but I still couldn't

take my eyes off him.

This is going to be a tough one. Damien.

I think it's quite interesting because I had seen him

earlier and I was like, "He doesn't seem right."

-But he was so good out there tonight.

-He was.

He's either a solo artist or I want to see him in something more

soulful and rocky.

-Disappointed in Dylan tonight.

-He didn't come through, did he?

He's coasting.

There was an aggression to him and I mean an aggression that's got

so much tension that it's on fire. He wasn't on fire.

OK, everyone, what do we think of Harry?

He's got to be in the band, that's it. Look how bright his eyes are.

You know that's his real name? Harry Fabulous.

That just kills it for me.

-He performed well tonight.

He showed the audience how much he was enjoying it by not

looking at them but looking at each other,

looking at the other members of the band.

You see each other enjoying it, that spreads out and that's what

he was using tonight.

I thought Matt was great tonight and he definitely

has a lot of energy when he dances.

He stepped it up from the audition to tonight. He likes an audience.

He's a great singer, Veeraj. We gave him 16 points.

I thought he was struggling tonight. He wasn't comfortable.

to get his far in this competition,

You're so right, they are love nuggets.

What a great spirit you've got and you know, it's true.

In showbusiness, in the music business,

in the rock 'n' roll business, the acting world.

We all get disappointments. I've had thousands of them.

But don't let it stop you and don't take it personally.

If this isn't the job for you, then there's another one for you.

I know this should be a triumphal moment for you but it is

bitter-sweet saying goodbye to the others but how are you feeling?

Speechless. Completely speechless.

Performing with all eight of us after the weeks and weeks of

hard work, I couldn't be prouder of everyone on this stage.

Everyone has done so well.

Gary, what was it about these five that stood out?

Now I see them stood there this is why these guys are the five.

They look amazing as a band, they really do.

They look great. Guys, for me this is the start of the competition.

Build a wall round yourselves.

Become brothers and friends because you'll get

so far if you look after one another.

It was like...

My star lit up, inside I lit up.

There was only one star left and when it went off, I'd never

experienced any kind of emotion like that in my life.

Going forward, us five are going to have the times of our lives

and keep giving it and keep putting that flavour into it.

With the boys that are in this group,

I really feel that we can do well in this competition.

What you did tonight was absolutely outstanding.

You've only tapped into the small part of what your talent is.

Thank goodness there wasn't this kind of talent around in my day.

I see the theatre in you.

The groups were paired with their stars through a random draw.

This bunch will be performing an all-singing,

all-dancing medley with Busted.

We've got different people, personalities.

It will be nice that we can all use our skills as one team.

The group needs to blend but Robbie tribute act Dan Budd is more

comfortable centre stage.

I'm used to being just me, you know?

So do I try to take the front man role? Do I hide in the background?

It's a whole new thing for me.

Whereas waiter Conor is struggling with the pace of rehearsals.

-I don't have that much experience.

-Out, across, out.

So it's ten times harder and ten times longer

to get the routine as quick as I can.

And Luke is having his own nightmares. Literally.

I've been having dreams about this dance routine we've been doing.

To control my nerves I've been told to imagine the judges naked.

I don't really want to imagine Gary or Martin naked.

I think I know a few people who would disagree.

With only five places up for grabs, all the boys face the same dilemma -

how to stand out individually and also gel as a group.

At the moment they seem really disjointed.

To make a proper band you have to find people who are

solo artists but who can blend in when they need to.

Whoops!

Before show day, each of our groups were visited by the judges.

Martin has popped in to see how our Busted boys are getting on.

Shut that door, Martin.

I think this group's lacking a little bit of unity.

Luckily, Martin's got a cunning plan to help the boys to bond and

it's a little unusual.

This is real old drama technique. It's about breaking down barriers.

Everyone's got to close their eyes.

I'm going to mix everybody up. Pair up.

Just start touching each other's faces.

Just say out loud who you think it is.

You had a lot of embarrassment there.

All of this needs to be a little bit further forward.

With such a frenzied routine, timing their moves is crucial.

There's a lot of people on that stage. So it's very busy.

Everyone's dancing in line.

Everyone has to make sure they're next to each other and it's

all about what's coming next.

I really thought I was goner,

the first star comes flying towards me, I was like, "What?!"

Doing it in rehearsal, it was OK but when you're performing

in front of people that are smiling and they're feeding back

from your energy, that's just a whole other thing.

I lost belief in myself and it was the slowest process

to get that star. It was like...

slow motion.

So excited for live shows, it's going to be insane, can't wait.

Tonight's all about performing together as a cast,

which for our winning five boys, they'll be doing day in, day out

in a touring musical. So what can they expect?

My involvement in musical theatre started in The Bodyguard.

The Bodyguard rolled into Memphis,

Memphis rolled into Cats,

it's just been a brilliant time for me.

When I'd toured the world with the Spice Girls,

I thought I'd worked harder than anyone could ever work

and then I worked in musical theatre.

They have to sing every day,

sometimes it's two or three shows a day. I just couldn't do it!

When I was in theatre, I had to actually go and relearn how to sing

because it's a completely different style of singing.

You have to go out there and deliver every night.

It's full on.

You're very much part of an ensemble.

There's lots of people relying on you

so that can be quite daunting in itself.

You become very much a team player and I like that,

I like the camaraderie that that brings.
