-Is everybody in good singing form in Newry? ALL: -Yes! | 0:04:32 | 0:04:35
Right. It's very, very simple. When I say "It blowed away"... | 0:04:35 | 0:04:39
All you gotta do is "It blowed away". | 0:04:39 | 0:04:42
# It blowed away | 0:04:42 | 0:04:44
-# It blowed away -# It blowed away | 0:04:44 | 0:04:46

# It blowed away | 0:04:51 | 0:04:53
Not too bad. We'll try it so. | 0:04:53 | 0:04:54

Oh! | 0:08:17 | 0:08:19 | |
Oh! | 0:08:21 | 0:08:23 | |
Hey! | 0:08:25 | 0:08:27 | |
CHEERING | 0:08:34 | 0:08:36
Mike Denver, ladies and gentlemen. Isn't he doing a great job? | 0:08:40 | 0:08:44
-HE SPEAKS IN IRISH -Fantastic. | 0:08:44 | 0:08:47
There's lots of bands around Portumna. | 0:09:01 | 0:09:03
As a child growing up, I would've seen the likes of The Conquerors were a great band around here. | 0:09:03 | 0:09:08
I would have seen them travelling off every afternoon | 0:09:08 | 0:09:10
when I'd be heading home from school. | 0:09:10 | 0:09:12
Seeing my mam heading out every night, | 0:09:17 | 0:09:19
that was very normal for me growing up to see. | 0:09:19 | 0:09:21
That would have been something that I always wanted to be doing | 0:09:21 | 0:09:24
and something I always wanted to be, on the road. | 0:09:24 | 0:09:27
When Mike was about 15 or 16, I heard him sing. | 0:09:31 | 0:09:35
It was around the time Garth Brooks was coming to Ireland. | 0:09:35 | 0:09:38
And Mike was really into Garth Brooks at the time and I went in | 0:09:38 | 0:09:41
and I said, "Gosh, come out here, quick. You gotta hear Mike." | 0:09:41 | 0:09:45
I listened outside the door, I thought it was Garth Brooks singing. | 0:09:45 | 0:09:48
He was lucky he got good genes from the mother! | 0:09:48 | 0:09:51
It was a great learning experience. | 0:09:57 | 0:09:59
But I had a bit of the groundwork done as I say and a little bit of the apprenticeship served. | 0:09:59 | 0:10:04
Mike Denver! | 0:10:04 | 0:10:06
# Could've been the whiskey Might've been the gin... # | 0:10:16 | 0:10:20
Liz came along to a gig. | 0:10:28 | 0:10:30
She was bringing her mam along to a gig and, as I say, | 0:10:30 | 0:10:33
we haven't looked back. | 0:10:33 | 0:10:34
10, 11, 12 years later, still happy as ever. | 0:10:34 | 0:10:38
It's tough when you're leaving home early in the afternoon. | 0:10:45 | 0:10:48
You're not home till late the next morning, | 0:10:48 | 0:10:51
but that two hours on stage, it just makes up for it. | 0:10:51 | 0:10:53
When you hop out on that stage, nerves just disappear. | 0:11:05 | 0:11:08
You have them for that minute walking around before you hop out, | 0:11:08 | 0:11:11
but I think it's like most artists... | 0:11:11 | 0:11:13
You have a little flutter as I say before you go out. | 0:11:13 | 0:11:17
You're a little bit worried, but once you get on that stage, it all | 0:11:17 | 0:11:20
just disappears when you see people out there enjoying themselves. | 0:11:20 | 0:11:23
It brings the good out in you. | 0:11:23 | 0:11:25
Mike, you started out in your mother's band, | 0:11:25 | 0:11:27
but what was it like when you went on the road yourself? | 0:11:27 | 0:11:31
-Was it nerve-racking being on your own? -It was frightening. | 0:11:31 | 0:11:34
It's one of them memories that... always in the back of my mind, | 0:11:34 | 0:11:37
I can remember the days coming up to putting the band on the road, | 0:11:37 | 0:11:40
the few days rehearsing, and practising walking out on the stage and all these things. | 0:11:40 | 0:11:43
They're the little things that still stick in my mind. | 0:11:43 | 0:11:46
The very first song I sing, | 0:11:46 | 0:11:47
the night we launched the band was John Denver, Country Roads. | 0:11:47 | 0:11:51
That was the opening number. | 0:11:51 | 0:11:52
I think the next number was yours, a bit of Stand Beside Me. | 0:11:52 | 0:11:55
So there's a couple of numbers that stick in the mind | 0:11:55 | 0:11:57
from the very beginning. They were some of the songs. | 0:11:57 | 0:12:00
Now, you're one of the younger generation of singers, | 0:12:00 | 0:12:04
but singing the good old country songs. | 0:12:04 | 0:12:06
How do you choose the songs you sing? | 0:12:06 | 0:12:08
A lot of the songs are chosen from people sitting in audiences at gigs | 0:12:08 | 0:12:12
come up at the end of the night and would suggest different songs. | 0:12:12 | 0:12:15
I have a great team in the office. My manager, Willie, is a great influence. | 0:12:15 | 0:12:19
And my mam has always been a huge influence as well, | 0:12:19 | 0:12:21
picking songs over the years for me. | 0:12:21 | 0:12:24
Now, I suppose there are always highlights in any career, | 0:12:24 | 0:12:27
but I would hazard a guess by saying | 0:12:27 | 0:12:30
recording with George Jones must have been a highlight? | 0:12:30 | 0:12:33
It was, definitely. A lot of things stick out in my mind. | 0:12:33 | 0:12:36
Without a doubt, George Jones was definitely one of the big ones | 0:12:36 | 0:12:39
because I grew up listening to George Jones. | 0:12:39 | 0:12:41
I loved George Jones and Merle Haggard and all these guys. | 0:12:41 | 0:12:44
There's also other ones that... Meeting different people, | 0:12:44 | 0:12:46
getting to tour with the likes of Charlie Pride and one of | 0:12:46 | 0:12:49
the very first tours we done that I got to work with Crystal Gayle. | 0:12:49 | 0:12:52
That was huge thing at the time for us to meet people like that | 0:12:52 | 0:12:55
that I would have just grown up and seen them on the television. | 0:12:55 | 0:12:58
To meet people even like yourself at the time, it was a huge buzz | 0:12:58 | 0:13:02
and a huge highlight of my career, for someone that coming from a town in Portumna, small place, | 0:13:02 | 0:13:07
and meeting all these people that you grew up watching on | 0:13:07 | 0:13:10
television and seeing and hearing on the radio, it was a huge thing. | 0:13:10 | 0:13:14

and a few little words here and there | 0:22:07 | 0:22:09
