0:00:280:00:31

Please show your appreciation for the Ulster Orchestra

0:00:310:00:34

and conductor David Brophy.

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:04:570:05:00

Ladies and gentlemen, a warm round of applause for this evening's hosts,

0:05:040:05:09

Claire McCollum and Noel Thompson. CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:05:090:05:12

-Hello, gorgeous.

-All right?

0:05:120:05:14

-How are you?

-Doing very well, good evening!

-I like rehearsing that bit!

0:05:140:05:18

Ladies and gentlemen, it's our very great pleasure to offer you

0:05:180:05:21

a very warm welcome to this year's Proms in the Park concert.

0:05:210:05:26

This is our 10th year, Belfast was brilliant,

0:05:260:05:30

Carrickfergus was a cracker, Hillsborough was heavenly,

0:05:300:05:34

but Bangor's going to be just beautiful.

0:05:340:05:36

-It certainly is indeed!

-CHEERING

0:05:360:05:38

And of course all with the fantastic support of the Ulster Orchestra,

0:05:380:05:42

give them another quick round of applause, please.

0:05:420:05:44

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:05:440:05:47

Fantastic as ever to have the Ulster Orchestra here this evening

0:05:470:05:52

and they opened of course with Mozart's overture to The Marriage Of Figaro

0:05:520:05:55

and it certainly is a great start

0:05:550:05:57

to what is going to be a great, great evening.

0:05:570:06:00

All right, we're here for some unbelievably wonderful music.

0:06:000:06:03

Of course, I must say at this point that

0:06:030:06:04

we would like to extend our thanks to North Down Borough Council,

0:06:040:06:07

without whom this would not have been possible.

0:06:070:06:09

Thank you for allowing us to use this fantastic piece of ground.

0:06:090:06:12

So, without further ado, let us ask the orchestra

0:06:120:06:15

with their leader Ioana Petcu-Colan and David Brophy

0:06:150:06:18

to take us away from here to the skies of sunny Spain.

0:06:180:06:23

Bizet's March Of The Toreadors from Carmen!

0:06:230:06:26

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:08:360:08:40

It's our very great pleasure to introduce

0:08:430:08:45

our first special guest of the evening.

0:08:450:08:48

She sang with us five years ago and it was a tumultuous success

0:08:480:08:52

and we are so glad to have her with this again tonight.

0:08:520:08:55

It is, ladies and gentlemen, no-one other than the diva of all divas,

0:08:550:08:58

the very beautiful Lesley Garrett!

0:08:580:09:00

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:09:000:09:02

LESLEY SINGS IN ITALIAN

0:09:170:09:19

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:12:450:12:47

LESLEY WARBLES

0:12:550:12:56

And she's still going, ladies and gentleman!

0:12:560:12:58

Lesley, you look fantastic

0:12:580:13:00

and that was just a stunning, stunning performance.

0:13:000:13:03

Oh, that was such fun! I can't tell you, that was such fun!

0:13:030:13:05

-4,000 people, all rocking it, oh, it was wonderful!

-You couldn't beat it!

0:13:050:13:10

She did tell me earlier in rehearsals

0:13:100:13:12

that she was going to be 100 times more hyper when she came off and she's right!

0:13:120:13:15

You can't help it, it's the adrenaline, you know,

0:13:150:13:18

it's that wonderful music and the Ulster Orchestra,

0:13:180:13:20

oh, they are playing SO fabulously.

0:13:200:13:23

It just is the best, best fun, it really is.

0:13:230:13:26

-Are they listening out there?!

-They are! Give them a wave!

0:13:260:13:29

Thank you, everybody! Oh, I didn't realise you will seeing this!

0:13:290:13:32

You are the best audience, thank you so much!

0:13:320:13:35

-Leslie, thank you very much, go and get changed and cool off.

-See later.

0:13:350:13:39

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:13:390:13:42

Moving on, Rodeo is a Ballet written by Aaron Copland.

0:13:420:13:45

In its symphonic form it has four movements,

0:13:450:13:48

there's the Buckaroo Holiday, Corral Nocturne,

0:13:480:13:51

-Saturday Night Waltz and Hoe Down!

-LAUGHTER

0:13:510:13:55

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:17:180:17:20

So, from the Rodeo to something altogether more ordered.

0:17:280:17:32

Karl Jenkins is a Welsh composer

0:17:320:17:34

and the piece we're going to hear was written by him in 1996,

0:17:340:17:37

but it was inspired by the 16th century Italian architect Palladio.

0:17:370:17:42

Now, Palladio embodied the Renaissance dream of order and harmony

0:17:420:17:47

and this is what is reflected in Jenkins' music.

0:17:470:17:49

So will hear one movement from Palladio.

0:17:490:17:51

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:22:020:22:04

Karl Jenkins' Palladio.

0:22:090:22:11

Now, everywhere you go in the world, as we all know,

0:22:110:22:14

you meet people of Irish origin,

0:22:140:22:15

well, we went to Australia to secure the services of our next guest -

0:22:150:22:20

a long way to go.

0:22:200:22:21

And when we had them secured it was only purely by chance,

0:22:210:22:24

in fact, as a result of a tweet by the man himself,

0:22:240:22:28

who we discovered that his ma is from Belfast!

0:22:280:22:31

MUTED CHEERING

0:22:310:22:34

He is now one of the world's finest players of the classical guitar.

0:22:340:22:39

I'd like you, ladies and gentlemen, to put your hands together,

0:22:390:22:43

a big North Down Proms in the Park welcome for Craig Ogden!

0:22:430:22:47

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:22:470:22:49

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:27:230:27:26

A stunning, stunning performance there by Craig Ogden.

0:27:340:27:37

How was it out there for you tonight?

0:27:370:27:39

Actually, the crowd are so lovely that...

0:27:390:27:43

you know, it's quite an intimidating scene, obviously,

0:27:430:27:45

big stage, big audience, it's on television,

0:27:450:27:48

but everybody was so incredibly welcoming

0:27:480:27:51

that it made me relax quite quickly.

0:27:510:27:52

This is your first Proms, Craig?

0:27:520:27:54

It is, absolutely, and obviously, even growing up in Australia,

0:27:540:27:57

we get the last night of the Proms on television,

0:27:570:28:00

so it's an institution I've been aware of since I was a small child

0:28:000:28:03

and to be taking part in it is an amazing total dream.

0:28:030:28:07

And I know it's a very, very proud evening.

0:28:070:28:08

You mentioned your mum's from here this evening -

0:28:080:28:10

how proud do think she would be of you after that performance?

0:28:100:28:13

I think she would be beside herself,

0:28:130:28:15

but also she would have been absolutely terrified on my behalf!

0:28:150:28:19

-CHEERING

-Well, we certainly enjoyed it, as you can hear, the crowd loved it.

0:28:190:28:23

Craig, thank you very much, we'll let you go and enjoy the rest of the show.

0:28:230:28:26

-Thank you very much, thanks, Claire.

-Thank you.

0:28:260:28:28

Well, now, Bangor is obviously famous for its marina, Pickie pool

0:28:280:28:32

and paddling in the sea with an ice cream in your hand,

0:28:320:28:34

but it's also been put on the world musical map

0:28:340:28:37

by a group called Snow Patrol and this is our tribute to them,

0:28:370:28:41

it's a medley been put together by one of our very own Proms production team Graeme Stuart.

0:28:410:28:47

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:32:290:32:31

Ladies and gentlemen, it is my...

0:32:390:32:42

very, very great pleasure to introduce our next guest.

0:32:420:32:46

This performer has been at the top of his trade

0:32:460:32:48

since he won the Tchaikovsky gold-medal piano prize in Moscow 25 years ago

0:32:480:32:54

and he's also won respect and renown as a conductor.

0:32:540:32:59

His travels, his work, take him around the world,

0:32:590:33:02

but tonight he is in Bangor.

0:33:020:33:04

So please a big Proms in the Park welcome for Mr Barry Douglas!

0:33:040:33:09

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:33:090:33:11

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:40:170:40:20

That was unbelievable as always.

0:40:420:40:45

That was the piece that won you the gold medal in Moscow a few short years ago.

0:40:450:40:49

Does it have a really special place in your heart and your repertoire?

0:40:490:40:53

It does, I like to play it all the time,

0:40:530:40:54

not too much because I want it to be very special each time I approach it

0:40:540:40:58

and it's such great music, I love it.

0:40:580:41:00

You could exist in this bubble of the international superstar,

0:41:000:41:04

but you give a lot back to music.

0:41:040:41:05

I mean, not least in Northern Ireland with Camerata of course,

0:41:050:41:08

you're always developing new talent. Why is that so important you?

0:41:080:41:11

I think it's very important to encourage the new young talent

0:41:110:41:13

that is here on the island, north and south,

0:41:130:41:15

and through Clandeboye festival here near Bangor we do a lot of that

0:41:150:41:19

and we've been doing that for nearly 10 years now

0:41:190:41:21

and there is SO much talent here

0:41:210:41:22

and whatever we can do as an orchestra,

0:41:220:41:24

or I as an individual or an artist, that's, I want to do it.

0:41:240:41:27

Thank you so much for being with us this evening, it's been a real pleasure as always.

0:41:270:41:30

-I hope you enjoy the rest of the evening.

-Thank you.

0:41:300:41:32

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:41:320:41:35

Now, composer Max Steiner is one of the founders of film music as we know it today.

0:41:350:41:40

He provided the music for Gone With The Wind

0:41:400:41:42

and its sweeping and elevating score really has stood the test of time

0:41:420:41:47

sending shivers down your spine and given you goosebumps.

0:41:470:41:50

Ladies and gentlemen, this is Tara's Theme.

0:41:500:41:53

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:45:280:45:31

Now, ladies and gentlemen,

0:45:360:45:38

all of you old rockers will know who Paul Weller is, don't you?

0:45:380:45:41

MUTED CHEERING

0:45:410:45:43

-Yes?

-ALL: Yes!

0:45:430:45:44

Paul Weller of The Jam and the Style Council of course.

0:45:440:45:47

Well, he was asked recently if there was one song of the last two decades

0:45:470:45:51

that he would like to have written, what would it be?

0:45:510:45:55

Well, he chose a song by a Dublin singer-songwriter

0:45:550:45:59

Declan O'Rourke, a song called Galileo.

0:45:590:46:02

And it just showed Mr Weller's good taste

0:46:020:46:05

because this is a very special song.

0:46:050:46:08

Let's give a big, big warm welcome, please to Declan O'Rourke!

0:46:080:46:12

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:46:120:46:14

# Galileo fell in love

0:46:280:46:34

# As a Galilean boy

0:46:340:46:37

# And he wondered what in heavens

0:46:370:46:41

# Who invented such a joy?

0:46:410:46:46

# But the question got the better of his scientific mind

0:46:460:46:54

# And to his blind and dying days

0:46:540:47:00

# He looked up high And often sighed

0:47:000:47:07

# And sometimes cried

0:47:070:47:10

# Who puts the rainbow in the sky?

0:47:100:47:18

# Who lights the stars at night?

0:47:190:47:28

# Who dreamt up someone so divine?

0:47:280:47:36

# Someone like you And made them mine?

0:47:360:47:45

# Love can make you ask some funny questions now and then

0:47:460:47:55

# But just remember the alternative

0:47:550:48:00

# For I remember when

0:48:000:48:04

# I was lonely and unhappy And my lips were cold as ice

0:48:040:48:13

# But you kissed me and good heavens

0:48:130:48:18

# Now I'm here in paradise

0:48:180:48:22

# So if ever I'm not kissing you Or looking in your eyes

0:48:220:48:31

# I won't be blind and I won't cry

0:48:310:48:37

# I'll look up high and gladly sigh

0:48:370:48:45

# And thank the guy

0:48:450:48:47

# Who puts the rainbow in the sky?

0:48:470:48:56

# Who lights the stars at night?

0:48:560:49:05

# Who dreamt up someone so divine?

0:49:050:49:14

# Someone like you And made them mine?

0:49:140:49:23

# Someone like you And made them mine? #

0:49:230:49:32

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:49:390:49:42

That was another fabulous performance indeed

0:49:440:49:46

and Declan is making his way to us now.

0:49:460:49:49

-Declan, that was just unbelievable.

-Nice to meet you, Claire.

0:49:490:49:51

-It was lovely. Now, how was it for you out there?

-Great fun.

0:49:510:49:55

They were great, I could see them vibing away,

0:49:550:49:57

I could see people stamping their feet and waving things, it was great, loved it!

0:49:570:50:00

So, for your first Proms you feel you've one under your belt now, you might come back?

0:50:000:50:04

They'd better have me back, yeah!

0:50:040:50:06

I won't give up until they have me back, certainly!

0:50:060:50:09

I hope they enjoyed it as much as I did, I loved it

0:50:090:50:12

and it was just great hearing that sound behind me up there...

0:50:120:50:14

And the sound that I'm hearing from the front now is great.

0:50:140:50:17

I know you've played with Snow Patrol before...

0:50:170:50:20

Great friends of mine, what a great bunch of guys, yeah,

0:50:200:50:22

they're legends, all of them, actually.

0:50:220:50:25

And you toured with them?

0:50:250:50:26

I've toured a lot with them, actually, I've been around...

0:50:260:50:28

Germany and we did Wembley a couple of times

0:50:280:50:31

and around Ireland a couple of times, yeah, so...

0:50:310:50:35

We loved having you here this evening, you've been good to our crowd, thank you very much.

0:50:350:50:38

-Thank you very much, Claire, my pleasure.

-Thank you very much, Declan, thank you.

0:50:380:50:41

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:50:410:50:43

Louis B Mayer was a legendary head of MGM Studios in Hollywood

0:50:440:50:48

and in 1939, when he saw a preview of the Wizard Of Oz,

0:50:480:50:53

he thought the song Over The Rainbow was a real drag,

0:50:530:50:56

he thought it slows the whole thing down and he wanted it taken out.

0:50:560:50:59

Now, it was just the dedication of one of the associate producers

0:50:590:51:02

who insisted that it go in, thank goodness it did

0:51:020:51:05

because what a song - it has become one of the all-time greats.

0:51:050:51:08

Here to sing Over The Rainbow, one of the all-time greats,

0:51:080:51:12

please welcome once again the lovely Lesley Garrett.

0:51:120:51:15

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:51:150:51:18

# When all the world is a hopeless jumble

0:51:380:51:44

# And the raindrops tumble all around

0:51:440:51:51

# Heaven opens a magic lane

0:51:510:52:02

# When all the clouds darken up the skyway

0:52:070:52:12

# There's a rainbow highway to be found

0:52:120:52:19

# Leading from your window pane

0:52:190:52:31

# To a place behind the sun

0:52:310:52:39

# Just a step beyond the rain

0:52:390:52:49

# Somewhere over the rainbow

0:52:500:52:57

# Way up high

0:52:570:53:03

# There's a land that I heard of

0:53:030:53:10

# Once in a lullaby

0:53:100:53:16

# Somewhere over the rainbow

0:53:160:53:24

# Skies are blue

0:53:240:53:31

# And the dreams that you dare to dream

0:53:310:53:38

# Really do come true

0:53:380:53:44

# Someday I'll wish upon a star

0:53:460:53:49

# And wake up where the stars are far behind me

0:53:490:53:57

# Where troubles melt like lemon drops

0:53:570:54:00

# Away above the chimney tops

0:54:000:54:03

# That's where you'll find me

0:54:030:54:12

# Somewhere over the rainbow

0:54:120:54:20

# Bluebirds fly

0:54:200:54:26

# Birds fly over the rainbow

0:54:260:54:34

# Why then oh why can't I?

0:54:340:54:42

# If happy little bluebirds fly

0:54:560:55:03

# Beyond the rainbow

0:55:030:55:08

# Why oh why can't I? #

0:55:080:55:27

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:55:270:55:29

Lesley Garrett sparkling in every sense of the word.

0:55:350:55:38

Ladies and gentlemen,

0:55:400:55:42

can you believe we have come to the end of this evening?

0:55:420:55:45

-I can't believe it.

-Absolutely terrible.

0:55:450:55:47

Thank you so much helping us to celebrate our Proms in the Park

0:55:470:55:51

and thank you so much indeed to the North Down Borough Council,

0:55:510:55:54

without their help and support that tonight couldn't have happened.

0:55:540:55:57

-They've been wonderful.

-Yep.

0:55:570:56:00

Thank you to the orchestra, Ioana Petcu-Colan and David Brophy!

0:56:000:56:04

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:56:040:56:07

And so we come to our final piece this evening.

0:56:070:56:11

Although written by John Philip Sousa,

0:56:110:56:14

Liberty Bell March is most often associated with that classic comedy

0:56:140:56:18

Monty Python's flying Circus.

0:56:180:56:20

So as Eric Idle might have said,

0:56:200:56:22

"And now for something completely different."

0:56:220:56:25

-Goodnight, Bangor!

-Goodnight!

0:56:250:56:26
