-ARCHIVE: -It's here again, that time to start thinking about faraway places | 0:00:02 | 0:00:04
with strange-sounding names. | 0:00:04 | 0:00:06
Majorca is a favourite with British package tourists. | 0:00:06 | 0:00:09
New hotels mushroom all over the island. | 0:00:09 | 0:00:11
The Spanish island of Majorca has long been | 0:00:13 | 0:00:16
a popular resort for British holiday-makers. | 0:00:16 | 0:00:19
These days, it's an island of sharp contrast. | 0:00:19 | 0:00:22
On the one hand, a tranquil retreat | 0:00:22 | 0:00:24
of medieval villages and sandy coves. | 0:00:24 | 0:00:26

On the other, a neon-lit hotspot of nightclubs and bars. | 0:00:29 | 0:00:33
Yes! | 0:00:36 | 0:00:38 | |
I'm in Magaluf to meet the Street Angels, | 0:00:41 | 0:00:43
Christians who volunteer to give a helping hand | 0:00:43 | 0:00:46
to those whose night out has become a nightmare. | 0:00:46 | 0:00:50
-Are you the Angels of Magaluf? -Yeah. | 0:00:50 | 0:00:52
God bless you, God bless you all. | 0:00:52 | 0:00:54
-Here you go. -Thank you, thank you. | 0:00:54 | 0:00:56
On the other side of the island, I find out how the discovery | 0:00:57 | 0:01:01
of a Madonna statue turned this into a place of pilgrimage. | 0:01:01 | 0:01:06
And I'm here in Cumbria, at a very special wedding, | 0:01:06 | 0:01:08
where the bride and groom have a combined age of 188. | 0:01:08 | 0:01:12
Did you ever think you would fall in love again at this age? | 0:01:12 | 0:01:17
Yes, I did. | 0:01:17 | 0:01:18
THEY LAUGH | 0:01:18 | 0:01:20
Our hymns and songs, old and new, come from around the UK, | 0:01:30 | 0:01:34
but we begin on the Costa del Sol, where, in 2008, | 0:01:34 | 0:01:39
Graham Kendrick led a sunny Spanish Songs Of Praise celebration. | 0:01:39 | 0:01:44

Magaluf, on the south-west coast of Majorca. | 0:04:42 | 0:04:45
By day, its beaches are filled with holiday-makers | 0:04:45 | 0:04:48
enjoying the white sand and surf. | 0:04:48 | 0:04:51
But as the sun sets, | 0:04:51 | 0:04:53
attention shifts to the Punta Balena strip of nightclubs and bars. | 0:04:53 | 0:04:59
In the evening, this place becomes the party capital of the island. | 0:04:59 | 0:05:02
And for young Brits, if not careful, harmless fun can get out of hand. | 0:05:02 | 0:05:07
Magaluf! | 0:05:07 | 0:05:09
And that's where the Street Angels come in, | 0:05:09 | 0:05:12
a group of Christians who provide practical and pastoral help | 0:05:12 | 0:05:16
wherever it's needed. | 0:05:16 | 0:05:17
I joined them as they prepared to go out on the streets. | 0:05:17 | 0:05:20
So if there's an incident, make sure three of you are together. | 0:05:21 | 0:05:25
Do not do anything solo. | 0:05:25 | 0:05:26
Even if it's somebody across the road dying, believe me, | 0:05:26 | 0:05:28
make sure somebody's there and say, "Let's go over there together." | 0:05:28 | 0:05:31
Because we don't want to be isolated, it just invites trouble. | 0:05:31 | 0:05:34
THEY CHANT | 0:05:34 | 0:05:36
We aim to finish at 7, 7:30, unless there's something that goes on. | 0:05:39 | 0:05:44

Before joining Street Angels, Jason was a DJ in Magaluf. | 0:05:55 | 0:05:59
I had a great time, great nights, great parties, but, like, | 0:06:00 | 0:06:03
if there was somebody in the corner passed out and really needing help, | 0:06:03 | 0:06:07
I couldn't, like, go out, leave my station. | 0:06:07 | 0:06:09
So I tried it one night with the Street Angels and, er... | 0:06:11 | 0:06:13
I thought, "This is it." I don't know how to explain it. | 0:06:13 | 0:06:16
You get a buzz from it. | 0:06:16 | 0:06:17
The Holy Spirit kind of pretty much touches you, so... | 0:06:17 | 0:06:20
Calm before the storm, Jason, that's what this is. | 0:06:20 | 0:06:22
The calm before the storm, yeah. | 0:06:22 | 0:06:25
For some people, it's just a night out, | 0:06:26 | 0:06:28
but do you think this is going to be | 0:06:28 | 0:06:29
a life-changing and eye-opening night for me, | 0:06:29 | 0:06:32
-as a Street Angel for the first time? -Definitely. | 0:06:32 | 0:06:34
I think it is... | 0:06:34 | 0:06:36
I mean, we are in the business of seed-scattering here. | 0:06:36 | 0:06:38
I always say, like, you know, we never know what's going to happen, | 0:06:38 | 0:06:41
but we do believe that people are experiencing God's love | 0:06:41 | 0:06:44
through us and are touched by the spirit. | 0:06:44 | 0:06:46
I'm super-nervous, I don't know about you. | 0:06:46 | 0:06:49
But you're a pro, you've done this lots. | 0:06:49 | 0:06:51
Yeah, I've done it a couple of times, definitely. | 0:06:51 | 0:06:53
Let's just see what God is saying and what he's going to do tonight. | 0:06:53 | 0:06:56

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE | 0:09:22 | 0:09:25
In the north-west of Majorca is one of the island's most sacred places. | 0:09:28 | 0:09:34
Here, in the 13th century, a young shepherd called Lluc | 0:09:34 | 0:09:37
is said to have found a statue of the Virgin Mary | 0:09:37 | 0:09:40
amongst the rocks of a mountain stream. | 0:09:40 | 0:09:43
It was taken to a nearby church, and the next day, | 0:09:44 | 0:09:46
when people came to visit the statue, | 0:09:46 | 0:09:48
it had disappeared, and mysteriously it was found | 0:09:48 | 0:09:51
back in the stream where Lluc had first discovered it. | 0:09:51 | 0:09:54
It was decided to leave the statue where it was found, | 0:09:55 | 0:09:59
but on the site, this sanctuary was built. | 0:09:59 | 0:10:01
Hola! | 0:10:06 | 0:10:08 | |
Que tal? Muy bien. | 0:10:08 | 0:10:10
Now, people come from all over to see the statue of the Black Madonna. | 0:10:10 | 0:10:15
-TRANSLATION: -Well, the statue of the Virgin continues to attract people, | 0:10:15 | 0:10:20
even after 700 years. | 0:10:20 | 0:10:23
As you can see, this area is beautiful, | 0:10:23 | 0:10:25
but there's also a feeling of spirituality | 0:10:25 | 0:10:28
that we all carry within us. | 0:10:28 | 0:10:30

with its children's choir dating back to the 16th century. | 0:11:00 | 0:11:04

anteroom to the chapel, where it's revealed to the congregation, | 0:11:12 | 0:11:16
pilgrims who have come here, like many before them, | 0:11:16 | 0:11:19
across the centuries. | 0:11:19 | 0:11:21

The island of Majorca has been the location for many a holiday romance. | 0:14:06 | 0:14:10
You don't need to be on holiday to find love, | 0:14:10 | 0:14:12
and you certainly don't need to be young either, | 0:14:12 | 0:14:15
as Pam Rhodes has been finding out. | 0:14:15 | 0:14:17
Well, look at me all dressed up for a very special occasion. | 0:14:19 | 0:14:23
This is Whitehaven in Cumbria, | 0:14:23 | 0:14:25
and I have come to meet a wonderful couple, | 0:14:25 | 0:14:28
Bernard and Margaret, who, when they get married in a few hours' time, | 0:14:28 | 0:14:31
will surely become the world's oldest newlyweds... | 0:14:31 | 0:14:35
..because the bride is 95 years old, | 0:14:36 | 0:14:39
and her fiance is a relative toy boy at a mere 93. | 0:14:39 | 0:14:43
But the story of this wedding begins almost 70 years ago. | 0:14:45 | 0:14:50
Back in 1950, when Bernard married his first wife, Dorothy, | 0:14:51 | 0:14:55
Margaret was bridesmaid. | 0:14:55 | 0:14:57
In the years that followed, they stayed in touch. | 0:14:58 | 0:15:01
Dorothy had dementia for five years. | 0:15:01 | 0:15:03
I used to visit her every day. | 0:15:05 | 0:15:07
This one particular day, on my way there, | 0:15:07 | 0:15:10
I had a car crash, | 0:15:10 | 0:15:12
which resulted in this neck problem I have got. | 0:15:12 | 0:15:15
I'd been in hospital about two or three hours, | 0:15:15 | 0:15:18
and my son came in to say that Dorothy had just died. | 0:15:18 | 0:15:22
I would've been with her, if I'd managed to get there, | 0:15:22 | 0:15:24
but it was just too late. | 0:15:24 | 0:15:25
Bernard and Margaret lost touch with each other. | 0:15:27 | 0:15:30
And this story could have had a very different ending, | 0:15:31 | 0:15:34
if it weren't for Margaret's detective skills. | 0:15:34 | 0:15:37
I thought, "He's either died or he's moved," | 0:15:37 | 0:15:40
and I wrote a letter to his neighbour | 0:15:40 | 0:15:42
and said, would they tell me where he was? | 0:15:42 | 0:15:46
And the next thing was, I had a phone call from Bernard. | 0:15:46 | 0:15:49
And a telephone romance blossomed. | 0:15:49 | 0:15:52
Here comes the bride, look. | 0:15:52 | 0:15:54
Then, before last Christmas, I realised that | 0:15:56 | 0:15:58
for me it was more than friendship. | 0:15:58 | 0:16:00
And I thought, "It's not protocol. | 0:16:00 | 0:16:03
"I can't tell him." | 0:16:03 | 0:16:05
So I went to Orkney on holiday and I had to forget him | 0:16:05 | 0:16:08
and it didn't work. | 0:16:08 | 0:16:09
And then this little voice came into my head, and it kept saying, | 0:16:09 | 0:16:12
"Tell him!" | 0:16:12 | 0:16:13
I rang him up and I said, | 0:16:14 | 0:16:17
"I've got something to tell you, and I just had to say I love you." | 0:16:17 | 0:16:21
He said something ridiculous like, "Oh, it's obvious!" | 0:16:21 | 0:16:25
And then I didn't hear anything for the next couple of days. | 0:16:25 | 0:16:28
If either of you knows a reason why you may not lawfully marry, | 0:16:30 | 0:16:34
you must declare it now. | 0:16:34 | 0:16:36
I could guess from the way she was with me | 0:16:36 | 0:16:38
that she still felt something about me. | 0:16:38 | 0:16:41
And it just suddenly dawned on me that I loved this lady. | 0:16:42 | 0:16:46
Did you ever think you would fall in love again at this age? | 0:16:48 | 0:16:52
Yes, I did. | 0:16:53 | 0:16:54
Yes, I did, and it was Margaret I was thinking about. | 0:16:57 | 0:17:01
Margaret, I give you this ring as a sign of our marriage. | 0:17:01 | 0:17:06
And then he rang me up and he quoted that song, | 0:17:06 | 0:17:09
"I just called to say I love you." | 0:17:09 | 0:17:12
She knew what I meant. | 0:17:12 | 0:17:14
And we decided there and then to get married. | 0:17:14 | 0:17:17
She's very, very caring, thoughtful, completely unselfish. | 0:17:19 | 0:17:23
That's it. | 0:17:25 | 0:17:26
We share the same sense of humour, which helps a lot. | 0:17:28 | 0:17:31
And I'm able to be perfectly honest with him, | 0:17:31 | 0:17:35
and I know he will be honest with me. | 0:17:35 | 0:17:37
Bernard, I give you this ring... | 0:17:37 | 0:17:39
-As a sign of our marriage. -As a sign of our marriage. | 0:17:39 | 0:17:42
For better or worse, in sickness and in health, | 0:17:42 | 0:17:45
this man will be there for me. | 0:17:45 | 0:17:48
Yes. | 0:17:48 | 0:17:49 | |
I therefore proclaim that they are husband and wife. | 0:17:51 | 0:17:54
APPLAUSE | 0:17:54 | 0:17:57
All right, Dad? | 0:18:02 | 0:18:03
I think it's living out, not only our personal faith, | 0:18:05 | 0:18:08
but our combined faith now. | 0:18:08 | 0:18:11
And what are you looking forward to most about being married? | 0:18:12 | 0:18:16
Loving each other. | 0:18:17 | 0:18:19
I'll just get a couple more. | 0:18:24 | 0:18:26
And here's one of the hymns chosen by the happy couple. | 0:18:26 | 0:18:30
In the centre of Magaluf, it's 4am. The party has been going all night. | 0:20:58 | 0:21:03
I'm with the Street Angels, | 0:21:03 | 0:21:05
Christians ready to give a helping hand wherever it's needed. | 0:21:05 | 0:21:09
We're kind of in the hubbub now. | 0:21:10 | 0:21:12
-You're pretty much in the centre of Magaluf right now. -OK. -Yeah. | 0:21:12 | 0:21:16
I just want to wrap everyone in cotton wool. | 0:21:17 | 0:21:20
They look like they're going to hurt themselves any second. | 0:21:20 | 0:21:23
There's more than one group of Street Angels | 0:21:28 | 0:21:30
out on the strip tonight, including a team led by Gary Napier. | 0:21:30 | 0:21:34
So, what you'll probably see is people passed out, asleep, | 0:21:36 | 0:21:40
but you'll see them sitting on the pavement, just gone. | 0:21:40 | 0:21:43
If we don't wake them up soon enough, they'll probably | 0:21:43 | 0:21:46
find that their wallet's been stolen, their phone. | 0:21:46 | 0:21:49
-You lost your passport? -Yes. | 0:21:51 | 0:21:53
Lost my passport, all my money, everything I own. | 0:21:53 | 0:21:57
The map, right, I'm not being funny, but the map... | 0:21:57 | 0:22:01
This isn't even a map, it's basically a drawing... | 0:22:01 | 0:22:04
I think it's being where people are out, | 0:22:05 | 0:22:08
being prepared to help in their need. | 0:22:08 | 0:22:10
We're not there to ram the Bible down people's throats. | 0:22:10 | 0:22:12
The only reason why we're doing this is because of our faith, | 0:22:12 | 0:22:15
and our faith's in Jesus Christ. | 0:22:15 | 0:22:17
-I didn't have a clue where I was going at all. -I could tell. | 0:22:17 | 0:22:20
Thank you so much. | 0:22:20 | 0:22:22
I'm discovering that the Street Angels provide help | 0:22:23 | 0:22:26
in unexpected ways, like providing flip-flops for sore feet. | 0:22:26 | 0:22:30
-I've got bunions. -Are these dancing injuries? -Yes, I'm a dancer. | 0:22:31 | 0:22:35
-Right, so that's why. -My feet hurt. -Here we go. | 0:22:35 | 0:22:38
New out of the packet for you! | 0:22:38 | 0:22:40
I've got Havianas! You're an actual diamond. | 0:22:40 | 0:22:43
-What's your name? -Emily. -Nice to meet you. | 0:22:43 | 0:22:46
It's lovely to meet you, give us a hug. | 0:22:46 | 0:22:48
Enjoy your night. | 0:22:48 | 0:22:49
What also surprises me is how many people are aware of the | 0:22:49 | 0:22:53
Street Angels, and appreciate what they do. | 0:22:53 | 0:22:56
-Are you the Angels of Magaluf? -Yes. -God bless you. God bless you all. | 0:22:56 | 0:23:00
-Thank you. -Thank you. | 0:23:00 | 0:23:02
Everything you do is much appreciated, because one day, | 0:23:02 | 0:23:06
I will probably need you, you know what I mean? | 0:23:06 | 0:23:09
-Well, hopefully not tonight. -I'm 18 today, like. -Happy birthday! | 0:23:09 | 0:23:13
Happy birthday! | 0:23:13 | 0:23:14
-Are you OK? -Yes. -All right, cool. | 0:23:16 | 0:23:19
There's nothing wrong with saying, "Excuse me, are you OK?" | 0:23:19 | 0:23:22
If they say, "Yes, I'm fine," they're fine. | 0:23:22 | 0:23:24
-But if they're not, then it'll be pretty obvious. -Is he...? | 0:23:24 | 0:23:28
-Is he your friend? -Is he all right, guys? -You're looking after him? | 0:23:28 | 0:23:33
Cool. | 0:23:33 | 0:23:34 | |
This man is unable to stand, | 0:23:36 | 0:23:38
and isn't responding to his friends' efforts to help him. | 0:23:38 | 0:23:41
-She didn't want any help, that one. -Steffi offers some practical advice. | 0:23:45 | 0:23:50
Hold him like this, and here, and then you have his whole weight here. | 0:23:50 | 0:23:53
Then you can hold him there, yes? | 0:23:53 | 0:23:55
-That's it. -OK? -Yes, that's good. | 0:23:55 | 0:23:58
That friend was really lucky because he had good friends sticking around, | 0:23:58 | 0:24:02
and we pray that friends won't leave friends, | 0:24:02 | 0:24:04
and it's been lovely to see. | 0:24:04 | 0:24:06
Quite frankly, he just needs to sleep, because it just takes time. | 0:24:06 | 0:24:09
But sometimes, people find themselves completely alone, | 0:24:10 | 0:24:14
disorientated and lost. | 0:24:14 | 0:24:17
-When you woke up they were gone? -Well, I was fast asleep. | 0:24:18 | 0:24:22
When we saw him, he was just staggering, | 0:24:22 | 0:24:25
so we clearly could tell that he was lost. | 0:24:25 | 0:24:27
Yeah, it's down there. | 0:24:27 | 0:24:29
It's very easy for people to say, "Well, they've done it to themselves, | 0:24:30 | 0:24:34
"they've got drunk, why are you bothering?" | 0:24:34 | 0:24:36
But Jesus bothers with everyone, there's no distinction with him. | 0:24:36 | 0:24:39
We're all his children, and he cares for every one of us. | 0:24:39 | 0:24:41
And he says he goes out to look for his lost sheep | 0:24:41 | 0:24:43
and he doesn't go home until he brings them home. | 0:24:43 | 0:24:46
-Guys, we survived the night. The sun is up. What time is it? -It's 6:15. | 0:28:02 | 0:28:06
6:15. I feel quite awake for 6:15. | 0:28:06 | 0:28:10
It was a good night, wasn't it? | 0:28:10 | 0:28:13
It was good, it was good. | 0:28:13 | 0:28:14
We are needed here, as you can probably guess. | 0:28:14 | 0:28:17
You really are needed, and I've got to say, | 0:28:17 | 0:28:19
this hi-vis jacket made all the difference. | 0:28:19 | 0:28:21
Just going up to someone. | 0:28:21 | 0:28:23
Yes, it's pretty much like putting on the armour of God, | 0:28:23 | 0:28:27
wearing these jackets. | 0:28:27 | 0:28:28
What do we do, what do we do? What's the thing? | 0:28:28 | 0:28:31
-Let's just hug. Yeah! -Group hug! -Yeah! | 0:28:31 | 0:28:34
That's it from the island of Majorca. | 0:30:46 | 0:30:49
It's been fascinating to see the contrast in life here. | 0:30:49 | 0:30:52
Whether it's a sanctuary in the mountains, | 0:30:52 | 0:30:54
or the Street Angels doing their work, | 0:30:54 | 0:30:56
faith is at its heart. | 0:30:56 | 0:30:57
Next week, David climbs aboard the famous Settle to Carlisle line. | 0:30:57 | 0:31:02
But we end today with a classic hymn from husband and wife duo | 0:31:05 | 0:31:08
Keith and Kristyn Getty. | 0:31:08 | 0:31:10 |
