Over the next three Sundays, 12 of the best school choirs

0:00:020:00:05

in the country will showcase their talent

0:00:050:00:08

here in Birmingham.

0:00:080:00:09

This week, the Junior Choirs, with children as young as seven years old,

0:00:090:00:13

aim for the title of 2014 Songs Of Praise School Choir Of The Year.

0:00:130:00:18

APPLAUSE

0:00:220:00:25

Welcome to Birmingham's International Convention Centre

0:00:250:00:29

for the first semifinal of the 2014 competition.

0:00:290:00:31

It was right here in this building that the first school choir

0:00:310:00:34

competition took place back in 2003.

0:00:340:00:37

Since then, only the very best choirs in Britain have laid

0:00:370:00:41

hands on one of these.

0:00:410:00:43

The precious trophy.

0:00:430:00:45

It's these six junior schools from across England and Wales who

0:00:450:00:48

must sing like angels if they are to make the final in two weeks' time.

0:00:480:00:53

Only three choirs can go through.

0:00:530:00:55

Will it be...? From Chester, Queen's Lower School.

0:00:550:00:59

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:01:330:01:35

As you can tell, quite a few of our audience are excited already.

0:01:370:01:40

Now, I'm very excited to introduce someone brand-new

0:01:400:01:43

to our school choir stage.

0:01:430:01:45

She is well-known to BBC viewers in Northern Ireland

0:01:450:01:47

and she's a great fan of school choirs and singing.

0:01:470:01:50

Please give a warm welcome

0:01:500:01:52

to Claire McCollum.

0:01:520:01:54

APPLAUSE

0:01:540:01:57

Tell us what you are going to be doing today.

0:02:040:02:06

I'll be backstage, gauging reaction with all

0:02:060:02:08

the children as they come off the stage.

0:02:080:02:10

Hopefully it will all be positive and good.

0:02:100:02:12

And also finding out what they thought of the judges' comments.

0:02:120:02:15

Do you think there's going to be elation or tears?

0:02:150:02:18

I think we're going to have a bit of everything backstage.

0:02:180:02:21

I think it's just wonderful to see all these children

0:02:210:02:24

and how much work they've put into the whole competition. Absolutely wonderful.

0:02:240:02:28

-Claire, we're going to be seeing a lot of you. Thank you.

-Pleasure.

0:02:280:02:31

Claire McCollum.

0:02:320:02:34

Now it's time to introduce three experts in their field

0:02:380:02:41

who have the unenviable task of judging our choirs today.

0:02:410:02:44

Firstly, an internationally renowned choral director, conductor

0:02:440:02:48

and choir founder, who has worked at the highest level with children

0:02:480:02:52

and adult choirs all over the world -

0:02:520:02:55

Suzi Digby.

0:02:550:02:56

APPLAUSE

0:02:560:03:00

Next, a Brit-nominated, double MOBO Award-winning singer-songwriter,

0:03:000:03:05

born and raised right here in Birmingham.

0:03:050:03:07

She's sung in gospel choirs

0:03:070:03:09

and in front of tens of thousands at Glastonbury and beyond -

0:03:090:03:12

it's Laura Mvula.

0:03:120:03:13

APPLAUSE

0:03:130:03:18

It's no exaggeration to say that our third judge has reinvented

0:03:180:03:22

popular interest in choral singing. With his unerring ability to

0:03:220:03:25

draw the very best from children and adults - it's Gareth Malone.

0:03:250:03:29

APPLAUSE

0:03:290:03:30

Right, let's get singing.

0:03:350:03:36

Each of our six choirs will sing their choice of hymn.

0:03:360:03:39

Based on that one performance, the judges will select three choirs

0:03:390:03:43

to go into the final in two weeks' time.

0:03:430:03:45

It's tough at the top.

0:03:450:03:47

Our first school to sing have been at this stage of the competition once before.

0:03:470:03:51

It's St Martin's Ampleforth.

0:03:510:03:54

'St Martins Ampleforth is a Roman Catholic school.

0:03:570:04:00

'We sing a lot of religious music. We sing in Chapel. We sing at assembly.'

0:04:000:04:06

Singing the faith is really important to us.

0:04:060:04:11

I went for a hymn called, I, The Lord Of Sea And Sky.

0:04:110:04:16

It was really the children who reminded me that it

0:04:160:04:19

was the headmaster's favourite hymn.

0:04:190:04:21

I'm absolutely thrilled that we've chosen the hymn, because it's

0:04:210:04:24

inspiring and it's very moving to listen to the children singing that.

0:04:240:04:29

# I like ice cream. #

0:04:290:04:32

The one thing that we know that Mr Conyngham loves is chocolate.

0:04:320:04:35

He's, like, going for more all the time.

0:04:350:04:39

Yes, I have to confess it, I am addicted to chocolate. I can't get through a day without it.

0:04:390:04:45

Everybody is, like, guarding their bowl.

0:04:450:04:48

'Because he is going to steal it.'

0:04:480:04:50

'I think the children have to listen to one another.

0:04:500:04:53

'They're singing a harmony, they're singing in unison, but I think'

0:04:530:04:57

they will give of their best, because they're children like that. They want to do their very best.

0:04:570:05:02

# I, the Lord of sea and sky

0:05:050:05:08

0:07:390:07:45

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:07:470:07:51

St Martin's Ampleforth.

0:07:550:07:56

So, the first choir, they have to set the benchmark.

0:08:000:08:04

Suzi, did they set it high enough?

0:08:040:08:06

It's very difficult to go first.

0:08:060:08:08

I've always said that singing should be like the contents of a lava lamp.

0:08:080:08:12

Lots of shape and movement and colour and multidimensional.

0:08:120:08:15

And from the very first sound, I could hear that.

0:08:150:08:18

I could hear the shape and the fullness.

0:08:180:08:20

Unfortunately, the tuning went right at the end.

0:08:200:08:24

Because until that point, I was so impressed that you were able

0:08:240:08:28

to get a good dynamic range and keep the tuning so impressively good.

0:08:280:08:33

Gareth, this is the first choir you've ever heard as a judge

0:08:330:08:37

on School Choir Of The Year. Were you impressed?

0:08:370:08:39

I was. Well done, Ampleforth, for going first.

0:08:390:08:42

You established your performance very well from the beginning.

0:08:420:08:45

You clearly loved it, which is very important.

0:08:450:08:49

I could see in your eyes there was a connection there.

0:08:490:08:51

Just as Suzi said, towards the end the tuning just went.

0:08:510:08:55

It started to push a little bit.

0:08:550:08:57

And that's something that does come with experience,

0:08:570:09:00

but I thought that was a very assured performance. Well done.

0:09:000:09:03

Laura, as a singer yourself, what did you make of the sound that these young voices created?

0:09:030:09:08

Can I just say thank you so much for that lovely performance?

0:09:080:09:12

It's so hard when you've got to come out and open and be the first sound.

0:09:120:09:17

When you sang in unison and you opened, it was like one voice. It was so beautiful.

0:09:170:09:23

And when you smiled, those of you that smiled,

0:09:230:09:26

it really lifted the sound.

0:09:260:09:29

So thank you. I felt like it was a really wonderful performance.

0:09:290:09:33

Thank you, St Martin's Ampleforth.

0:09:330:09:35

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:09:350:09:37

-St Martin's Ampleforth, how do you think it went?

-We had so much fun.

0:09:410:09:45

It was just so happy.

0:09:450:09:46

And Mr Conyngham, do you think he'll be sharing his chocolate with you after today?

0:09:460:09:50

Maybe. Probably, if we do win.

0:09:500:09:53

And what was the atmosphere like out there?

0:09:530:09:57

It was scary and tense, but it was amazing.

0:09:570:10:01

They've worked very, very hard. They've done the school great honour.

0:10:010:10:04

I couldn't be more pleased with them, really. We did our very best.

0:10:040:10:07

Time now for the first of two choirs from Wales. It's Ysgol Iolo Morganwg from Cowbridge.

0:10:070:10:13

BOTH: Helo, pawb. That means, "Hello, everybody", in Welsh.

0:10:150:10:21

Here in Cowbridge it's really fun.

0:10:210:10:24

It's just really one of the highlights of Wales, I think.

0:10:240:10:29

'So, it's important that the words

0:10:310:10:33

'in Welsh come over to the English audience.'

0:10:330:10:37

It's harder, because they don't know what we're saying,

0:10:370:10:40

so we need to say it in our faces.

0:10:400:10:43

I'm very strict with the choir.

0:10:450:10:47

Diction and the words of songs are very important.

0:10:470:10:51

'It can be hard, but it's what you've got to do in a choir.'

0:10:510:10:55

-We are brilliant. We are probably the best in the world.

-Stop showing off!

-Sorry!

0:10:550:11:01

THEY SING IN WELSH

0:11:090:11:11

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:13:160:13:18

Ysgol Iolo Morganwg, everybody.

0:13:260:13:28

So, Gareth, a familiar hymn sung in Welsh. What did you make of it?

0:13:310:13:35

The word that I wrote down was "joy" as you started.

0:13:350:13:38

An absolutely wonderful sound at the beginning and such lovely faces.

0:13:380:13:42

You have a fantastic connection with your conductor

0:13:420:13:45

and you clearly love singing for her, which just really shone.

0:13:450:13:49

I would really like to pick out the people in the second verse.

0:13:490:13:52

That was lovely. Real passion there.

0:13:520:13:55

The danger is sometimes that the passion just bubbles over

0:13:550:13:59

and you want to keep that lovely blended sound that you

0:13:590:14:03

had at the beginning, all the way through.

0:14:030:14:05

That's maybe something to watch for, that you don't let the pot boil over.

0:14:050:14:08

Laura, picking up on the joy theme, did you feel that joy as well?

0:14:080:14:12

I just loved that, just listening to that amazing sound.

0:14:120:14:17

When you sing together in unison, it sounds so pure

0:14:170:14:21

and the way you sing the words, you sing so sincerely,

0:14:210:14:24

like I believe it.

0:14:240:14:26

Suzi, you often say that Welsh choirs sound better when they sing in Welsh.

0:14:260:14:31

Definitely. There's something about singing in the Welsh language which

0:14:310:14:34

sprinkles magic dust over the sound.

0:14:340:14:37

And your best sound is in the middle range

0:14:370:14:40

and you could start to build a bit more fatness in the higher register.

0:14:400:14:44

Thank you, Ysgol Iolo Morganwg.

0:14:440:14:46

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:14:460:14:49

You look relieved to have that over. How do you think they performed?

0:14:510:14:54

They performed beautifully, beautifully.

0:14:540:14:56

I couldn't have asked for a better performance from them.

0:14:560:14:59

Some of them are so young.

0:14:590:15:00

SHE SNIFFS

0:15:000:15:02

Sorry, I'm getting a bit emotional here.

0:15:020:15:04

It was a very nice thing out on the stage.

0:15:040:15:06

It was my first time to do it.

0:15:060:15:08

It was scary, but then we got good comments.

0:15:080:15:12

I thought they were going to tell us we were flat and all that stuff.

0:15:120:15:15

But they actually said nice things.

0:15:150:15:17

Our next choir are from the Royal London Borough of Greenwich.

0:15:170:15:20

It's Blackheath Preparatory School.

0:15:200:15:23

# Gonna lay down my burden Down by the riverside... #

0:15:240:15:29

We've been entering, I think, for three years

0:15:290:15:32

'and I did hope that we would be in with a chance this year'

0:15:320:15:35

because I felt their singing was sweet.

0:15:350:15:38

I bet anything that there's not going to be a single moment of silence on the bus.

0:15:380:15:42

Everyone's going to be literally screaming, singing, chatting the whole time.

0:15:420:15:47

But the most important thing is to enjoy our singing.

0:15:470:15:51

We work really well as a team and Mrs Graham is really inspiring.

0:15:510:15:54

It's not just Miss Graham pushing us,

0:15:540:15:57

it's ourselves pushing ourselves.

0:15:570:15:58

It's when we go home, we practise all the time.

0:15:580:16:01

We will be singing Down By The Riverside.

0:16:010:16:05

It was about people in the slave trade

0:16:070:16:09

singing about their world that they had been promised.

0:16:090:16:12

It always cheers everyone up, because it cheers them up,

0:16:120:16:14

so it cheers us up.

0:16:140:16:16

This is one of Mrs Graham's most famous funny warm-ups

0:16:170:16:20

and it goes like this.

0:16:200:16:22

ALL: # Duh-duh-duh-duh-duh... #

0:16:220:16:25

'We need to give it 150% while they're up there singing'

0:16:250:16:29

and just go for it, really, and enjoy it.

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:19:060:19:08

Blackheath Preparatory School.

0:19:150:19:17

Laura, a spiritual as opposed to a pure hymn,

0:19:190:19:22

but was it a good choice?

0:19:220:19:23

Yes, I definitely really enjoyed that.

0:19:230:19:25

It kind of made me want to dance a little bit.

0:19:250:19:28

I loved the arrangement. I think it's always a bit difficult

0:19:280:19:31

sometimes when we have those rhythmic things.

0:19:310:19:34

You gave it so much energy and that really came across.

0:19:340:19:37

You can really feel that you enjoy singing,

0:19:370:19:40

and are enjoying those parts, but it's always... I wonder what would happen

0:19:400:19:43

if in rehearsal you spent a little bit more time just really thinking

0:19:430:19:48

about getting those together so that you are really working well together.

0:19:480:19:53

Suzi, what did you think of that performance?

0:19:530:19:56

I love hearing unbridled singing in young voices,

0:19:560:19:59

but be very careful that it doesn't get too chesty.

0:19:590:20:03

So maybe start developing ways in which they can get that energy

0:20:030:20:06

and volume without using the chest voice too much.

0:20:060:20:10

Gareth, you know what it's like trying to get the best out of a choir.

0:20:100:20:13

How did Blackheath do?

0:20:130:20:15

I thought lots of this performance was excellent.

0:20:150:20:19

Very disciplined, very engaged with your singing.

0:20:190:20:23

But I think if you find that slightly lighter dynamic that the groove will start to come.

0:20:230:20:29

It's the hardest thing in the world, is to get that feeling funky, but still light.

0:20:290:20:34

So, lots to commend in that, but just a couple of points for you to work on.

0:20:340:20:38

Thank you, Blackheath Preparatory School.

0:20:380:20:40

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:20:400:20:43

That must have gone well, did it?

0:20:460:20:48

They worked really hard and they had that energy.

0:20:480:20:50

That was the main thing.

0:20:500:20:51

What was it like being out there on stage?

0:20:510:20:53

A bit scary, but it was really fun in the end.

0:20:530:20:56

What would it mean to you to get into the final?

0:20:560:20:59

Everything.

0:20:590:21:00

THEY CHEER

0:21:000:21:02

Our next choir are ready to go.

0:21:020:21:04

This consistently high-quality choir were winners

0:21:040:21:07

of the competition in 2008 and they made the semifinals in 2012.

0:21:070:21:12

It's Lindley Junior School from Huddersfield.

0:21:120:21:16

'Singing is incredibly important at school here.

0:21:160:21:19

'Half the children in the school sing'

0:21:190:21:21

in one of the school's four choirs.

0:21:210:21:24

The Lindley choir is very energetic

0:21:240:21:27

because Mrs North, our choir teacher, is very motivating.

0:21:270:21:32

'A lot of it comes from my own passion, and hopefully I can then share that'

0:21:320:21:36

enjoyment and love of the singing and the words and everything with them.

0:21:360:21:40

# Praise, my soul, the king of heaven... #

0:21:400:21:42

Praise, My Soul, The King Of Heaven, we chose it at our wedding a few years ago, me and my husband.

0:21:420:21:47

It's got lots of different dynamics in it and it's got a very, very large range of notes.

0:21:470:21:53

'When it's saying, "Fathers being in distress", you would be

0:21:530:21:58

'kind of feeling sad, but when it gets to the choruses,'

0:21:580:22:03

you've got a feeling of joy and happiness.

0:22:030:22:07

# Praise, my soul, the king of heaven

0:22:100:22:16

# To his feet thy tribute bring

0:22:160:22:21

# Ransomed, healed Restored, forgiven

0:22:210:22:26

# Who like me his praise should sing?

0:22:260:22:30

# Praise him Praise him

0:22:300:22:33

# Praise him Praise him

0:22:330:22:35

# Praise the everlasting king

0:22:350:22:42

# Praise him for his grace and favour

0:22:440:22:48

# To our fathers in distress

0:22:480:22:53

# Praise him still the same forever

0:22:530:22:58

# Slow to chide and swift to bless

0:22:580:23:03

# Praise him Praise him

0:23:030:23:06

# Praise him Praise him

0:23:060:23:08

# Glorious in his faithfulness

0:23:080:23:14

# Father-like he tends and spares us

0:23:160:23:22

# Well our feeble frame he knows

0:23:220:23:27

# In his hands he gently bears us

0:23:270:23:32

# Rescues us from all our foes

0:23:320:23:37

# Praise him Praise him

0:23:370:23:39

# Praise him Praise him

0:23:390:23:42

# Widely as his mercy flows

0:23:420:23:49

# Angels help us to adore him

0:23:500:23:56

# Ye behold him face to face

0:23:560:24:00

# Sun and moon bow down before him

0:24:000:24:05

# Dwellers all in time and space

0:24:050:24:10

# Praise him Praise him

0:24:100:24:12

# Praise him Praise him

0:24:120:24:15

# Praise with us the god of grace. #

0:24:150:24:22

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:24:240:24:26

Lindley Junior School.

0:24:330:24:35

Suzi, a very familiar hymn and a well drilled choir. What did you make of it?

0:24:390:24:43

That unison first verse is one of the nicest and best sung hymns I've heard.

0:24:430:24:49

The subtlety of the way you expressed the language just

0:24:490:24:53

sort of brought each word to life.

0:24:530:24:55

And when you repeated text, you got a new energy to it. That's something

0:24:550:24:59

really difficult to achieve without going overboard.

0:24:590:25:03

When you split into two parts, it just needed a bit more fullness,

0:25:030:25:07

a bit more richness.

0:25:070:25:09

And similarly, in the last verse, the melody needed to be a bit more robust.

0:25:090:25:14

Gareth, the choirs get one song, one chance to shine. Did they?

0:25:140:25:19

They certainly did, although I'm terrified to say anything negative,

0:25:190:25:23

because I'm aware that they're all...

0:25:230:25:25

LAUGHTER There are very noisy.

0:25:250:25:27

Your families probably could make a very good choir as well, I suspect.

0:25:270:25:31

As Suzi said, that first verse was absolutely astonishing

0:25:310:25:36

and we all nodded as you then went into the second verse

0:25:360:25:39

and there was a change of colour.

0:25:390:25:41

It's a bit of a cliche now in choir circles, but, "two ears, one mouth".

0:25:410:25:45

Must listen really, really carefully.

0:25:450:25:47

And it's very tempting when you're singing in parts to get louder

0:25:470:25:50

to try and bolster everyone's confidence.

0:25:500:25:53

What you need to do, actually, if anything, is just soften off

0:25:530:25:56

and make sure you are absolutely together.

0:25:560:25:58

It just came apart ever so slightly at the end, tuning wise,

0:25:580:26:01

but other than that, I thought it was particularly assured.

0:26:010:26:04

Laura?

0:26:040:26:05

Wow. I feel like you guys have said everything.

0:26:050:26:10

Your tone, together with the way you sing -

0:26:100:26:13

that opening first verse was just so beautifully and effortlessly sung.

0:26:130:26:18

I was captivated from beginning to end

0:26:180:26:21

and that's quite a big thing, so thank you.

0:26:210:26:23

Thank you, Lindley Junior School.

0:26:230:26:26

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:26:260:26:27

How do you think you performed out there?

0:26:270:26:29

Yes, I think we performed really well.

0:26:290:26:31

We gave it our all, so if we get through, we get through,

0:26:310:26:34

and we'll perform as well as we can in the final.

0:26:340:26:37

But if we don't, we've got here, which is really good in the first place.

0:26:370:26:40

It's my first time being here and I really loved it.

0:26:400:26:43

We hope we've done enough to get to the final. If we haven't, we'll try again.

0:26:430:26:47

We've just had a choir from Yorkshire.

0:26:470:26:49

Next, we're going to hear one from the Northwest.

0:26:490:26:51

From the ancient city of Chester, it's the Queen's Lower School.

0:26:510:26:55

When I was told we got through to the semifinals, I didn't believe it.

0:26:570:27:02

I said, "You must be lying. You're just playing a joke."

0:27:020:27:06

# Make me a channel of your peace... #

0:27:060:27:11

Make Me A Channel Of Your Piece is a prayer, so when... you've got to understand

0:27:110:27:15

when you're singing it what you're singing about.

0:27:150:27:18

I think it's popular with young choirs, or at least they

0:27:180:27:22

can convey the sense of the words

0:27:220:27:24

because of the simplicity of the tune.

0:27:240:27:26

'I think of, like, smooth, it could be a lullaby, and everything is'

0:27:260:27:30

really nice and I really want to be kind and everything.

0:27:300:27:35

-Whoo! Brrr!

-CHOIR: Whoo! Brrr!

0:27:350:27:38

And again. That's brilliant. Breathe in.

0:27:380:27:40

Mrs Corlett's weird, wacky and wonderful.

0:27:400:27:43

'She's never, like, angry. She's always happy and bouncy.'

0:27:430:27:48

Kind of crazy. Just a bit.

0:27:480:27:52

Two, three.

0:27:520:27:54

THEY START SINGING

0:27:540:27:55

Where were you going?

0:27:550:27:57

'Music, I always feel, has to be fun.'

0:27:570:27:59

What do we have to remember about the first line? Tell me.

0:27:590:28:02

'In early teaching I think it's very important to tell stories'

0:28:020:28:06

through music and for children to be able to express themselves

0:28:060:28:09

in rhyme and song and chant...

0:28:090:28:11

ALL: Ch-ch, ka-ka-ka.

0:28:110:28:13

..and just love it.

0:28:130:28:15

# Make me a channel of your peace

0:28:240:28:30

# Where there is hatred Let me bring your love

0:28:300:28:36

# Where there is injury

0:28:360:28:40

# Your pardon, Lord

0:28:400:28:43

# And where there's doubt True faith in you

0:28:430:28:50

# Oh, master Grant that I may never seek

0:28:510:28:56

# So much to be consoled as to console

0:28:560:29:02

# To be understood as to understand

0:29:020:29:09

# To be loved as to love with all my soul

0:29:090:29:17

# Make me a channel of your peace

0:29:180:29:24

# Where there's despair in life Let me bring hope

0:29:240:29:30

# Where there is darkness Only light

0:29:300:29:37

# And where there's sadness Ever joy

0:29:370:29:43

# Oh, master Grant that I may never seek

0:29:430:29:50

# So much to be consoled as to console

0:29:500:29:56

# To be understood as to understand

0:29:560:30:03

# To be loved as to love with all my soul

0:30:030:30:10

# Make me a channel of your peace

0:30:120:30:17

# It is in pardoning that we are pardoned

0:30:170:30:23

# In giving to all men that we receive

0:30:230:30:29

# And in dying that we're born to eternal life

0:30:290:30:37

# And in dying that we're born

0:30:370:30:42

# To eternal life. #

0:30:420:30:49

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:30:500:30:53

From Chester, Queen's Lower School.

0:30:580:31:01

Gareth.

0:31:040:31:06

Lots of attention in rehearsal, I'm sure, to the diction

0:31:060:31:08

and to the words, and that really came over.

0:31:080:31:12

We are all about metaphors this afternoon.

0:31:120:31:14

It should be like a balloon going down, the air coming out

0:31:140:31:18

very, very smoothly, so that the sound carries out into the audience.

0:31:180:31:21

And because of your attention on the detail, just be careful that it

0:31:210:31:24

doesn't become too crotchet-by-crotchet.

0:31:240:31:27

And just finally, lovely to see you get a very beautiful, quiet sound.

0:31:270:31:33

Really, that's very important, to be able to sing quietly.

0:31:330:31:38

Laura, did Queen's deliver under the spotlight?

0:31:390:31:42

Absolutely. I do know how hard it is, especially

0:31:420:31:45

when you feel really nervous and jittery.

0:31:450:31:48

And just the small point of tuning when you are singing in harmony,

0:31:480:31:53

and just balancing there, but overall it was

0:31:530:31:58

a really moving performance and one of my favourite hymns.

0:31:580:32:01

Suzi, what did you think of Queen's performance?

0:32:010:32:04

One of the most important things about singing is to decide how

0:32:040:32:08

you are going to capture the essence of a song.

0:32:080:32:11

"Make me a channel of your peace", that is the central theme.

0:32:110:32:15

And I was just made to feel incredibly peaceful.

0:32:150:32:20

It was almost tangible by that lovely silvery sweet sound

0:32:200:32:25

that your choir makes. That's a real gift.

0:32:250:32:28

And it was quite a restrained, contained performance throughout.

0:32:280:32:32

Thank you, judges. Thank you, Queens Lower School.

0:32:320:32:36

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:32:360:32:38

I think they performed as well as they possibly could

0:32:410:32:43

and my two little soloists at the end did brilliantly.

0:32:430:32:46

I think it went quite well, because we all did a nice harmony and everything.

0:32:460:32:49

How proud do you think the whole school is going to be

0:32:490:32:52

whenever you get back to class?

0:32:520:32:54

Epically proud.

0:32:540:32:55

Our final choir are the second choir from Wales.

0:32:550:32:58

They've never entered the competition before

0:32:580:33:00

so are thrilled to be here in the semifinals.

0:33:000:33:03

It's Llangennech Junior School from Llanelli.

0:33:030:33:05

# Papa has a head like a Ping-Pong ball

0:33:060:33:08

# Papa has a head like a Ping-Pong ball... #

0:33:080:33:11

I like being in the choir, because we can sing five different languages.

0:33:110:33:14

African, Latin, Welsh, English and sometimes gibberish.

0:33:140:33:20

We think we've got a secret weapon in this competition.

0:33:200:33:24

'It's Mr Richards.'

0:33:240:33:26

Some of you are cheating...

0:33:260:33:28

He gives a lot of effort and time to teach us.

0:33:280:33:32

'This is the very first time that we have entered the competition'

0:33:320:33:36

and heard just before Christmas

0:33:360:33:38

that we'd made it through to the semifinals

0:33:380:33:40

and was absolutely over the moon, overwhelmed, really.

0:33:400:33:43

I couldn't believe that we'd made it through on our first attempt.

0:33:430:33:46

'The hymn is Ave Verum, written by Mozart. It's in Latin.

0:33:480:33:56

'It's emotional, because at the start you are happy,'

0:33:560:34:00

because it's saying that Jesus is being born.

0:34:000:34:04

You've got to sing quite quiet in the piece.

0:34:040:34:09

'Sotto voce is a term that some of the children are getting used to now.'

0:34:110:34:14

I've asked them to practise singing sotto voce, which is very, very quietly.

0:34:140:34:18

'They're a fantastic bunch and they really enjoy performing.'

0:34:190:34:22

I really couldn't ask for anything more.

0:34:220:34:24

THEY SING IN LATIN

0:34:310:34:34

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:36:530:36:56

Llangennech Junior School.

0:37:000:37:02

So, Laura, a brand-new choir to the competition.

0:37:040:37:07

-It's their first time and they come out singing Mozart.

-Wow!

0:37:070:37:10

-A bit brave, isn't it?

-Amazing.

0:37:100:37:13

And your dynamic range I felt was just wonderful.

0:37:130:37:16

There were moments of real quiet and then real passion. It really grew.

0:37:160:37:21

And I'm sorry, I'm a bit overwhelmed by that. So, thank you.

0:37:210:37:24

Suzi.

0:37:240:37:25

I take my hat off to you.

0:37:250:37:27

I don't think that anyone who is not a trained musician can

0:37:270:37:30

appreciate how difficult that is.

0:37:300:37:32

The vocal production, really, really good.

0:37:320:37:36

As always with this piece, the big challenge is the tuning,

0:37:360:37:40

the tuning of the chording, and you did a pretty good job.

0:37:400:37:43

Gareth, have Llangennech closed the Junior School semifinals on a high note?

0:37:430:37:50

Very stylishly, I thought.

0:37:500:37:52

A very brave choice to do a piece like that for your first time

0:37:520:37:55

in the competition, so I commend you...

0:37:550:37:58

I commend you for that.

0:37:580:38:00

Well done to the altos who, when things were starting to drift sharp,

0:38:000:38:05

held on, powering through there.

0:38:050:38:08

I thought it was a little bit sharp and a little bit too controlled

0:38:080:38:13

and one of the wonderful things about young people singing is

0:38:130:38:16

getting that sense of joy

0:38:160:38:18

and that's very difficult under such controlled circumstances.

0:38:180:38:21

So, I'd love to come and see you let your hair down one day.

0:38:210:38:24

Thank you, Llangennech.

0:38:240:38:27

THEY CHEER

0:38:290:38:31

What was it like performing out there in front of everybody?

0:38:310:38:33

Nervous, very nervous.

0:38:330:38:35

I think we did go a bit sharp on some notes,

0:38:350:38:38

but I think it went pretty good.

0:38:380:38:40

I know they said it was a big challenge and it could have

0:38:400:38:43

been a risk and they wanted to see the children let their hair down.

0:38:430:38:46

Well, if we get to the final, they're going to definitely see that as well, so fingers crossed.

0:38:460:38:50

Our judges have left the hall to make their minds up

0:38:500:38:53

as our choirs nervously await their decisions backstage.

0:38:530:38:56

Here's a look back at all our Junior Choir performances.

0:38:560:38:59

# Here I am, Lord... #

0:39:020:39:06

I just thought they set such a fantastic standard.

0:39:060:39:09

The way that the director shaped this performance, there was

0:39:090:39:12

a real sense of where it was going to and there was a clear climax.

0:39:120:39:16

-It did start to... They pushed a little bit.

-Yes.

-It was hard to criticise.

-Yes.

0:39:160:39:22

THEY SING IN WELSH

0:39:220:39:26

A lot seemed to come from the children themselves.

0:39:270:39:30

It seemed to be a natural expression of them and their singing

0:39:300:39:34

that was shaped by a conductor, rather than a sort of imposition.

0:39:340:39:37

-Yes.

-But then it was very, very strong at the beginning

0:39:370:39:40

and I thought, "This is it."

0:39:400:39:43

-And then a couple of moments let it down.

-Yes, so it wasn't perfect.

0:39:430:39:46

# Gonna lay down my burden Down by the riverside... #

0:39:460:39:51

Loads of energy. I kind of felt a little disappointed that it was

0:39:520:39:57

kind of rushing at parts with all that syncopation.

0:39:570:40:01

But then it was still... They committed to it. I'm not sure.

0:40:010:40:04

-I'm kind of torn.

-It did rush, but it rushed together.

-Yes.

0:40:040:40:09

They all stayed stuck with it. They committed to it.

0:40:090:40:12

She has brought some really good qualities to the choir,

0:40:120:40:16

-but it's still work in progress.

-I'd agree.

0:40:160:40:19

# Praise, my soul, the king of heaven... #

0:40:200:40:24

-GARETH:

-'That moment at the beginning when they sung was just spectacular.'

0:40:240:40:29

And I felt like it grew as well, so I wasn't sort of lost or bored.

0:40:290:40:34

When they sang "faithful-NESS", this is a bugbear of mine,

0:40:360:40:41

they stressed the unimportant syllable.

0:40:410:40:43

-"FAITHFUL-ness".

-OK.

0:40:430:40:45

# Oh, master Grant that I may never seek... #

0:40:460:40:51

Performance is supposed to capture the text if it's...

0:40:510:40:55

And it did that for me. I felt at peace

0:40:550:40:59

and there was a sense of calm and stillness.

0:40:590:41:03

SUZI: 'But they were quite tentative and nervous'

0:41:030:41:06

-and, as you say, there was quite a lot of tension there.

-Mm-hm.

0:41:060:41:09

THEY SING IN LATIN

0:41:090:41:11

It was absurdly ambitious and I was really surprised by how well they coped.

0:41:150:41:23

-GARETH:

-'Those sustained lines.'

0:41:230:41:25

Yes, those long... I mean, goodness me.

0:41:250:41:31

You have to know how to breathe, and to do it together and to do it well.

0:41:310:41:34

They seem to work really well and to trust their director.

0:41:340:41:40

Right, the moment of reckoning.

0:41:400:41:43

Our choirs are back on stage, are judges are back in their seats.

0:41:430:41:47

The nerves are jangling, I can tell you.

0:41:470:41:49

Each of our judges will be asked to announce the name of a choir

0:41:490:41:53

who has made it into the final.

0:41:530:41:54

Suzi.

so don't miss out. Tune in next week. Bye for now.
