School Choir of the Year Final Songs of Praise

It's the day of the big one, the final.

After two nail-biting semifinals, our remaining junior

and senior choirs are hoping to impress the judges

with their inspirational song.

They want to win one of these and be crowned

the 2016 Songs Of Praise School Choir Of The Year.

Not only do we have our fabulous junior schools,

but also the top-three senior school choirs in the country

are warming up backstage

awaiting their turn.

And we also have very special guests,

Britain's Got Talent winners Collabro are singing here too.

What a line-up, ladies and gentlemen.

Well, there can be only one winner,

and it's the task of our expert panel of judges

to decide who that winner is going to be.

The first member of our panel is one of the most successful

classical music crossover artists in the world -

it's as simple as that.

She's performed at some of

the world's most prestigious concert halls

and her fans include world leaders and royalty.

It's the hugely talented mezzo-soprano Katherine Jenkins.

Our next guest judge is a first-class singer,

musician, composer, arranger and choir leader.

He sang in his church choir from the age of nine

and grew up to conduct several renowned choirs.

He's also worked with numerous leading recording artists

including Bryn Terfel, Beyonce and will.i.am - not together, though.

Please welcome Ken Burton.

To complete the panel, we have another huge talent

who became a household name when she won the popular BBC One talent show

How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria?

She earned rave reviews when she opened

at the London Palladium as Maria von Trapp,

and has since branched out into acting and presenting,

including here on Songs Of Praise.

It is, of course, Connie Fisher.

Well, Mr Ken Burton, they were brilliant in the semifinals -

have they upped their game?

What I really love about this choir

is their ability to really make a song meaningful.

The Lord's Prayer is the most famous prayer

and very often people just recite it because they know the words.

But you really made it meaningful.

The sound was really what I call an attractive vocal sound.

You know, so, well done, fantastic,

a great testament to choral singing in this country,

and well done,

you ought to be absolutely proud of that performance.

And, Katherine, what did you make of it?

Well, again, a beautiful performance from you,

and what I loved about you in your semifinal performance

was you had beautiful phrasing,

and this certainly was something that I felt I enjoyed even more

in your final performance.

And what it showed me was that

you're learning to become great musicians,

and I felt that, I felt that you really felt the music.

It was a very strong, very technical

but a very emotive performance as well.

Connie, it was a very emotive song.

It really was.

You sang it so beautifully

and you created such an atmosphere here in the hall.

It was a great choice for the final.

If I had to critique in any way,

I think I'd like just a little more oomph at times from the choir.

I know you have it in you, but you have such wonderful dynamic,

an incredible diction.

-I absolutely loved that piece. Well done.

Ken, you know what it's like to get the best out of a choir,

did they pull together as one?

The words were very energetic,

I loved what you did with the words,

and the harmonies worked really well

because they were nicely balanced and they had great effect.

And I would encourage you also

just to make sure that at the end of phrases,

that you always end the words together.

So, one D, one S, one T - whatever the word ends in,

make sure you're always together on that.

But that was just very, very stunningly beautiful.

that we can really work on,

You know, not only do you have beautiful voices,

you could tell the amount of work that you've had to put in

Just the perfect sentiment for this competition.

It was really lovely, and you definitely made us all smile.

What I love about you, Hereford, is that you are,

as Katherine says, all performers.

And, for me, singing is about storytelling,

and you told such a great story.

I could look at anyone of you and be captivated.

I thought it was a brilliant performance,

a great song choice for the final.

And I grew up singing in a choir.

If I had to sing in a choir, I'd sing in yours.

here's something to help you make up your mind.

I so enjoyed Lindley's performance

cos I felt like they were really feeling the music.

You know, each individual member of the choir was sort of...

you know, sort of getting into the spirit of the song.

Sometimes choirs can stand like statues,

sometimes they're choreographed to move,

but I love it when singers and individual singers of the choir

just feel that they have their own space to express themselves.

I'm not sure I would've chosen that song for the final.

However, they upped their game, for me, the most.

What I really liked about Blackheath

was just I felt their words were energetic.

It's a thing to actually just sort of sing words,

but it's a thing to pick certain words

and make those words jump out at you

when they become, you know, meaningful.

I really just felt they were on the verge of brilliance.

In the semis, as well, you said, Katherine,

you want a little bit more oomph,

and I felt that, certainly in the final.

# ..like the sun... #

I loved the beauty of their sound,

-but I wanted more sound.

-Yeah.

I felt they could have projected a little bit more.

It really was a beautiful sound they create,

just maybe just a bit more welly, that's what we need.

Hereford, I love them. They're storytellers,

and as a musical theatre performer,

of course I loved the jazz hands in the semifinals,

but they really showed a different side to themselves in the final,

and I'm really very keen on them as a choir.

I think it looks a lot of fun to sing with them.

# ..a vision of the future that all of us can share... #

I know they're connected to Hereford Cathedral,

so I thought their repertoire might be a bit more sustained,

-but they're a cool choir, really.

-They're not stiff.

They're not stiff at all,

and they're not afraid to take a risk.

For me, they were the best performers.

It was so enjoyable to watch.

I really think that the audience

will have thoroughly enjoyed this performance.

But I think maybe it wasn't as subtle

as some of the other performances.

But at the same time, you know,

I thought it was a great song choice.

# ..yes, it can all begin... #

For me, the quandary is do we go with

the people who were the fantastic performers

or do we go with the choir that made the most beautiful sound?

And I think that's...that's the quandary that I'm facing.

Well, our choirs are lined up

waiting to hear the judges' decision.

of presenting the trophy to the winners.

Katherine, any words of encouragement

for the two choirs that don't quite make it today.

Yes, absolutely. I want you to remember that

this has been an incredible experience.

You know, when I was your age, I entered lots of competitions

and some I won and some I didn't,

and it's just all about making you the best performers

and the best musicians that you can be.

And that I want you to go away knowing that

we're all so very proud of you

and please, please keep making your beautiful music.

They have. Those were the snappiest snaps I've ever heard.

It was such a polished performance.

I didn't think you could get any better,

but you've just proved me wrong.

It was dynamic, it was gloriously lazy yet musically crisp.

You know, you were so together.

And that wall of sound you create, I really love listening to.

So I'd like to walk with you on my iPod.

-This was effortless. This was easy.

It was light, it was bouncy.

What I would like to focus...

This music is very precious to me, it's part of my DNA.

..is even though it is light and jazzy,

it still needs to have a bit more sorrow in there.

You know, it's coming from a body of songs which are songs of struggle.

So the idea of "I want Jesus to walk with me," you know, "at this moment,

"I'm feeling lonely, I'm feeling in need

"of a presence greater than myself."

So I think, yes, do keep it light,

but also bring a little bit of heaviness

and greater expression,

so we can have an understanding of the song.

But, overall, you ought to be

extremely pleased with what you've produced there.

That was a really confident performance, wasn't it, Katherine?

Wow, you just totally knocked my socks off.

I was so impressed with that. It was confident, it was accomplished.

It was such a technical performance.

I feel like you must've worked on all those little details

again and again and again.

But it's paid off. It was fantastic.

That was really just a wonderful thing to be able to watch

-and listen to. Thank you.

Ken, it was a really complicated arrangement, wasn't it?

That was precise, that was clean, that was really skilled,

that was polished, the harmonisation was balanced,

that was really, really great.

And I will also want to mention, really, just the soloists,

because again, the soloists came right through.

It cut right through the texture and we heard everything.

The slight issue I'm having at the moment

is that this is a dramatic story, and the king didn't cry, "Oh."

The king cried, "Ooh!"

Yeah, there was a lot to this story,

and I just felt you could've worked the storytelling a lot more.

If I'd been stuck in a lion's den for a couple of days

and I hadn't been eaten,

I think, you know, I would be crying out hallelujah.

So I just wanted to hear more of what is this story,

what is this drama. But... Well done, fantastic.

Obviously, a lot of nerves, but I think we pulled it out of the bag.

-Was there enough passion for you, Connie?

-So much passion.

I felt that you drove that piece, it didn't drive you.

I think it could run away with you, that piece.

But I felt that all of you were in the moment.

And I think that's brilliant. You performed it.

And what I love about you is you look so confident.

You just walk on, you find your own space,

and you listen to each other as a choir.

For me, there were moments that weren't quite together.

But I think you did a phenomenal job. I felt the spirit.

They're cool customers, aren't they?

What I love about you is the way you stand

and the way you hold yourselves.

And it was almost like you were raring to go,

you were absolutely just...

Couldn't wait to come out and give your best performance.

You work so well together, and the voices blended beautifully,

but I would say maybe only half of you

were actually smiling when you're singing,

so I want to see a little bit more in the sort of mask of your face,

try and raise those cheekbones.

You don't have to switch that off just cos you're already singing.

But you told the story and you emoted it very, very well.

But just smile a little bit more next time.

I was with them from the moment they came on stage, really.

They really lit the room up for me.

The thing that is their strength is the complicated harmonies.

And they brought that the second time around, and almost bettered it.

And I thought that their communication was a little better,

but I still wanted a little bit more.

I didn't quite get enough of that from them.

They nailed it as an arrangement.

I think they nailed it chorally, in terms of what a spiritual really is.

-Mm-hm.

-I wasn't quite sure they...always hit the mark.

I loved the way that Tring started their performance.

# ..servant of the Lord... #

They literally attacked the final.

Like, I felt like they came in all guns blazing.

And they're so...they're so professional in their own way.

They're sort of very accomplished.

Do you know? I was a little bit disappointed.

They didn't quite sell it to me.

# ..and he stayed there all night long... #

I was hoping that they would sell it in their faces,

that it would come alive.

And as you said about the lion's den,

they weren't quite in the moment for me.

What was really good was that

they actually selected this particular piece,

which showed, you know, the depth of the basses,

it showed the height of the sopranos.

So I think, you know, when you're actually in a competition,

it's good to actually choose a song which enables you to

sort of show what can your choir do.

You know, with St George's, Weybridge, when they came out

and they just had that particular look on their face,

which sets you up as the audience to expect something.

# On the mountain, my Lord spoke... #

It was exciting, actually.

-I love the way they find their own space as a choir.

-Yeah.

But they listen and sing as one. It's very empowering, I think.

I love St George's. I think they make a really beautiful sound.

I felt like the body was there, but I wanted the face

to be expressive and excited and, "Yes, I'm ready to do this!"

And they were amazing technically, but I just wanted to see

it in the eyes, I wanted to see it in the face.

What a final. The judges have come to a decision,

and Katherine has joined us on stage to present the champion's trophy.

Ken, was it a difficult decision?

Well, everybody expects me to say,

"Yes, it was a difficult decision."

But it was, and I'm going to qualify that

by saying that they all sung very complex music.

Every single choir pulled it off.

And will say to each choir, your excellence is

a testament to the hard work of your teachers and yourself.

And every single one of you on that stage should go back

to your schools with your heads held high.
