Christmas isn't just coming, it's almost here. | 0:00:15 | 0:00:17
Are you in a panic with only six days to go? | 0:00:17 | 0:00:20
Well, however busy the coming week is going to be, | 0:00:20 | 0:00:23
why don't you just take half an hour out | 0:00:23 | 0:00:26
to relax and look forward | 0:00:26 | 0:00:28
to Christmas Day with its promise of peace and goodwill to all men, | 0:00:28 | 0:00:31
brought about by the birth of that very special baby, | 0:00:31 | 0:00:34

This week, a feast of candlelit carols | 0:00:43 | 0:00:47
from Stratford-upon-Avon. | 0:00:47 | 0:00:49
We tell the story of the first Christmas. | 0:00:49 | 0:00:52
And joyful, festive music, from Joe McElderry. | 0:00:54 | 0:00:58
Welcome to Stratford-upon-Avon, | 0:01:07 | 0:01:10
where here in Holy Trinity Church, | 0:01:10 | 0:01:12
people from across the town, are taking a breather | 0:01:12 | 0:01:15
from their Christmas preparations, to come and enjoy | 0:01:15 | 0:01:18
some of their favourite carols together, | 0:01:18 | 0:01:20
and to hear again the story | 0:01:20 | 0:01:22
of Christ's birth, in readings that we turn to, | 0:01:22 | 0:01:26
year after year. | 0:01:26 | 0:01:27
As we're in Shakespeare's hometown, | 0:01:29 | 0:01:33
we've asked people living and working locally, | 0:01:33 | 0:01:36
to help us tell the Christmas story. | 0:01:36 | 0:01:38
And we begin, with a much loved carol | 0:01:38 | 0:01:41
that reminds us of that very first Christmas | 0:01:41 | 0:01:44
in David's town, Bethlehem. | 0:01:44 | 0:01:46

In the sixth month of Elizabeth's pregnancy, | 0:04:59 | 0:05:03
God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, | 0:05:03 | 0:05:06
a town in Galilee, | 0:05:06 | 0:05:07
to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, | 0:05:07 | 0:05:11
a descendant of David. | 0:05:11 | 0:05:12
The virgin's name was Mary. | 0:05:12 | 0:05:15
The angel went to her and said, | 0:05:15 | 0:05:17
"Greetings, you who are highly favoured. | 0:05:17 | 0:05:19
"The Lord is with you." | 0:05:19 | 0:05:23
Mary was greatly troubled at his words, | 0:05:26 | 0:05:28
and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. | 0:05:28 | 0:05:31
But the angel said to her, "Do not be afraid, Mary. | 0:05:31 | 0:05:35
"You have found favour with God. | 0:05:35 | 0:05:37
"You are to conceive and give birth to a son, | 0:05:37 | 0:05:40
"and you are to call him Jesus. | 0:05:40 | 0:05:42
"He will be great and will be called | 0:05:44 | 0:05:46
" 'the son of the most high'. | 0:05:46 | 0:05:48
"The Lord God will give him the throne of his father, David, | 0:05:48 | 0:05:52
"and he will reign over Jacob's descendants forever. | 0:05:52 | 0:05:55
"His kingdom will never end." | 0:05:55 | 0:05:56
"But how will this be...", Mary asked the angel, | 0:05:58 | 0:06:01
"since I am a virgin?" | 0:06:01 | 0:06:02
The angel answered, "The holy spirit will come on you, | 0:06:07 | 0:06:10
"and the power of the most high will overshadow you. | 0:06:10 | 0:06:13
"So, the holy one to be born will be called 'the son of God'." | 0:06:13 | 0:06:18
"I am the Lord's servant," Mary answered. "May your word to me be fulfilled." | 0:06:18 | 0:06:23
Then, the angel left her. | 0:06:23 | 0:06:26
In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that | 0:09:52 | 0:09:56
a census should be taken of the entire Roman world. | 0:09:56 | 0:10:00
This was the first census that took place | 0:10:00 | 0:10:02
while Quirinius was governor of Syria. | 0:10:02 | 0:10:05
And everyone went to their own town to register. | 0:10:05 | 0:10:08
So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, | 0:10:11 | 0:10:16
to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and the line of David. | 0:10:16 | 0:10:22
He went there to register with Mary, | 0:10:22 | 0:10:24
who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child. | 0:10:24 | 0:10:27
While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, | 0:10:31 | 0:10:34
and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. | 0:10:34 | 0:10:37
And she wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, | 0:10:37 | 0:10:41
because there was no guest room available for them. | 0:10:41 | 0:10:44

Their child's starring role in the school nativity play. | 0:13:56 | 0:14:00
And here in Stratford, as you might expect, | 0:14:00 | 0:14:03
even the tots are word perfect. | 0:14:03 | 0:14:05
-Have you any room? -No, sorry. -Follow me to the stable. | 0:14:05 | 0:14:10
And Joseph helped Mary to sit down in the... | 0:14:10 | 0:14:14
Christmas is really exciting at school. | 0:14:14 | 0:14:18
We do lots of things in the classroom, making crafts, | 0:14:18 | 0:14:21
and things, but most especially, | 0:14:21 | 0:14:23
the children start their nativity preparations. | 0:14:23 | 0:14:28
We give presents, just like the three Kings that brought Jesus very special presents. | 0:14:28 | 0:14:34
We like to do a bit of modern and a bit of traditional. | 0:14:36 | 0:14:40
The Christmas story, for the children, | 0:14:40 | 0:14:42
is part of the curriculum, but it is also a very special part of the year. | 0:14:42 | 0:14:46
Well, it's normally quite stressful, | 0:14:46 | 0:14:48
cos they never really want to do the role they've been given. | 0:14:48 | 0:14:51
And this year, although Bo was Mary, she really wanted to be Angel Gabriel, | 0:14:51 | 0:14:55
so I've had to, kind of, bribe her, and coax her into being Mary. | 0:14:55 | 0:14:58
It's the pinnacle of the year, and seeing how they perform, cos they are | 0:14:58 | 0:15:02
all slightly different, anyway, and some, like Lily, sing very loudly. | 0:15:02 | 0:15:07
And others are much quieter. It's just lovely to see them all. | 0:15:09 | 0:15:14
Trying to get boys into brown tights | 0:15:14 | 0:15:16
and white tights hasn't always been easy. | 0:15:16 | 0:15:19
But, no, it's lovely. Just practising the songs really makes you more Christmassy. | 0:15:19 | 0:15:24
We tend to forget that Christmas is about Jesus, | 0:15:24 | 0:15:28
and we just go for the presents. | 0:15:28 | 0:15:30
I am angel Gabriel. | 0:15:30 | 0:15:31
I think it's such good for her to be part of something like they | 0:15:33 | 0:15:37
because she can then understand the meaning of Christmas | 0:15:37 | 0:15:40
behind the presents, and everything else. | 0:15:40 | 0:15:42
# Silent night | 0:15:48 | 0:15:51
# Holiest night | 0:15:51 | 0:15:55

# All is light | 0:15:58 | 0:16:01
# Shepherds hear the Angels sing | 0:16:01 | 0:16:08
# Hallelujah, hail the King | 0:16:08 | 0:16:15

# Jesus the Saviour is here! | 0:16:55 | 0:17:02

# Lend thy light | 0:17:20 | 0:17:23
# With the Angels let us sing | 0:17:23 | 0:17:30
# Hallelujah to the King | 0:17:30 | 0:17:36
# Jesus our Saviour is here | 0:17:36 | 0:17:44
# Jesus our Saviour is here! # | 0:17:44 | 0:17:50
Well, from the sweetness of children's voices, telling us | 0:17:51 | 0:17:56
of that Silent Night, our next carol is a joyful call to prayer that will | 0:17:56 | 0:18:00
have voices across the world singing out loud and clear this Christmas. | 0:18:00 | 0:18:04
O Come, All Ye Faithful. | 0:18:04 | 0:18:06
And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, | 0:21:00 | 0:21:04
keeping watch over their flocks at night. | 0:21:04 | 0:21:06
An angel of the Lord appeared to them, | 0:21:06 | 0:21:09
and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. | 0:21:09 | 0:21:13
But the angel said to them, "Do not be afraid. | 0:21:13 | 0:21:17
"I bring you good news that will cause great joy to all the people. | 0:21:17 | 0:21:20
"Today in the town of David a Saviour has been born to you. | 0:21:22 | 0:21:25
"He is the Messiah. The Lord. | 0:21:25 | 0:21:28
"This will be a sign to you. | 0:21:28 | 0:21:29
"You will find a baby wrapped in cloths, | 0:21:29 | 0:21:32
"lying in a manger." | 0:21:32 | 0:21:34
Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, | 0:21:37 | 0:21:43
praising God and saying, | 0:21:43 | 0:21:45
"Glory to God in the highest heaven, | 0:21:45 | 0:21:47
"and on Earth peace to those on whom his favour rests." | 0:21:47 | 0:21:53
When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, | 0:21:53 | 0:21:56
the shepherds said to one another, "Let's go to Bethlehem | 0:21:56 | 0:22:00
"and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about." | 0:22:00 | 0:22:04
So they hurried off and they found Mary and Joseph, | 0:22:04 | 0:22:07
and the baby, who was lying in the manger. | 0:22:07 | 0:22:10
After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, | 0:25:32 | 0:25:37
Magi from the east came to Jerusalem and asked, "Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? | 0:25:37 | 0:25:43
"We saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him." | 0:25:43 | 0:25:46
When King Herod heard this he was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him. | 0:25:49 | 0:25:54
When he had called together all the people's chief priests and teachers of the law, | 0:25:54 | 0:25:58
he asked them where the Messiah was to be born. | 0:25:58 | 0:26:01
"In Bethlehem, in Judea," they replied, "for this is what the prophet has written." | 0:26:04 | 0:26:09
Then Herod called for the Magi, secretly, and found out from them the exact time the star had appeared. | 0:26:13 | 0:26:20
He sent them to Bethlehem and said, "Go and search for the child. | 0:26:20 | 0:26:24
"As soon as you find him, report to me, so that I, too, may go and worship him." | 0:26:24 | 0:26:30
After they had heard the king, they went on their way, | 0:26:34 | 0:26:38
and the star they had seen when it rose went ahead of them | 0:26:38 | 0:26:42
until it stopped over the place where the child was. | 0:26:42 | 0:26:45
When they saw the star, they were overjoyed. | 0:26:47 | 0:26:50
And on coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, | 0:26:50 | 0:26:53
and they bowed down and worshiped him. | 0:26:53 | 0:26:56
Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. | 0:26:59 | 0:27:06
