Battles 1 The Voice UK

Four superstar coaches have secured their teams of ten. Now they must

decide which five to let go. battles start here! Two singers.

Singing one song. When they step in that ring... It is battle time.

winner... One loser. Let the battles commence! APPLAUSE Welcome

to The Voice, the battle rounds. Our coaches have split their teams

into pairs. Each pair must go head- to-head. After each pair have

performed, coaches must decide who advances and who goes home. Making

those difficult decisions are four of the biggest names in music.

Danny O'Donoghue! Tom Jones. Jessie J. And Will.i.am! The coaches have

paired up their own artists to sing against each other. Vince and

Jessica. So the only thing standing between each singer and a spot on

the live show is the team-mate they are pitched against. The person

standing next to you could be the person knocking you out. Before

they enter the battle ring, each will be trained by their coach.

One specially invited trusted advisor. Helping Jessie is Ana

Matronic. I will be looking for each competitor to take a song and

turn it into something they own. Bring it in guns blazing! Danny has

drafted in Paloma Faith. I am not looking for perfection. It would be

cool if we could see you head-to- head battling it out. I am looking

for character and personality and texture. Welsh musician and lead

singer of Catatonia, Cerys Matthews, is with Team Tom. You have two

minutes to sell your voice and the song. Will's advisor is advisor to

the Peas. We have worked with everyone. Tonight, the artists will

sing for glory. Leaving their coach with the ultimate decision.

on their way is hard. There is nobody on my team I don't want.

was overcome when all four chairs turned for her. I would like to

work with you as an artist. This could be the beginning of something

amazing. 25-year-old Jenny came to the auditions hoping to make her

passion her career. You rock and I would like to have you on the team

and kick some butt. The reason why I paired you guys is because I feel

you guys are both super mega divas. She is a diva. I don't think of

myself as a diva. People do call me that.

Will introduces his advisor. I have brought one of my best friends.

When I step in the studio to work, he is right there with me. I don't

feel comfortable going to the studio without my partner. When it

comes to the artists we have on our team, I will give them advice of

you don't have to be so technical, doing runs all the time. I want to

hear simplicity. This is a battleground. This is like Whitney

versus Christina. Take this song and make it your own.

The only thing I would say is Jenny projects really loud. Stuff is

coming out of you that is like woah! She is a lot louder than me,

which I am not used to. What you don't want to do is get into a

power battle to where your range has gone. That is what I saw you do,

Joelle. I did get a vibe that she might be a bit scared. Joelle is a

great singer. The thing that will throw her off her game is the power

that Jenny has. I saw something in general thi that I hadn't seen

before. -- in Jenny that I hadn't seen before. I knew this battle was

going to be tough. I have a chance to do this now. I have been trying

so hard to be heard and to be seen. Please let it be my time. When I'm

behind the bar, I'm dreaming of moments like this. I'm going to

make this decision for Will so easy. APPLAUSE Hoping this vocal showdown

OK. Will, I will come to you shortly. You have a big decision to

make. First, let's hear what your fellow coaches made of that.

Jessie? Grr! Tough, tough decision. You both have such different

qualities and different sounds in your voices. So powerful at the

same time. I felt Joelle you came out stronger. Jenny, you grew into

it. You were, like, OK, this is it. Then I heard little vibes that were

so unique. I don't know. Tom? you saying? It is difficult. I

think Jenny has a full voice, but then I think with Joelle, I prefer

the edge you have got on your voice, I think. APPLAUSE It is so close.

Yeah, yeah. It was a great song choice. Your singing was flawless.

All I can do was go with my gut on who I was watching the most. On

this performance, I would tip it over to Joelle - being honest.

Let's go to the coach who knows these two the most. You are in an

unenviable position right now. we were at the piano rehearsals,

Joelle you came in like you had no competition. Then Jenny, she came

and sang and surprised you to the point where it made you feel like

you probably weren't going to win. Jenny just, your voice is so full

and you surprised me. Will, it is time to make your decision. Joelle,

we talked about what you needed to come with. There was one particular

moment where it was like power and you tipped it off with a gentle

note. Wow! That blew me away. Jenny, you were smashing it, punching. She

was knocking you out. This is a was knocking you out. This is a

based on the fact that you don't have what it takes. You have more

In the piano rehearsals, Joelle was flatting out. I said control your

power and show people your range. She did that. That is why I wanted

her on my team. She listened and executed. Jenny is spectacular.

Jenny did what she did in the rehearsals. I'm not upset and

Musical theatre-trained Max's unique performance had Danny fired

up at the blind auditions. # Opportunity comes once in a

lifetime. # Vocally untrained Bill Downs made

the brave move of putting his voice before his vows. Is it all right if

we move the wedding? Yes. reason why I put Max and Bill

together is because they fill the same role in my team. They are at

the start of a great career - only for one of them. There is only one

spot on my team that I can filled by either of you. This is going to

be a great battle. You are in the prime of your life. This will go

head-to-head. There won't be any blood left on the floor afterwards,

hopefully. To get them ready, Danny's drafted in Paloma Faith.

One thing for me to be the vocal expert... The reason I am bringing

in Paloma is she is an incredible artist. I really need a second pair

of eyes. Eye contact. I have a little pet hate and it's singers

stood on stage motionless and they will have to work on engaging the

onlooker a bit. It would be cool if we could see you head-to-head,

battling it out. Actually vibing off each other. Cool. Cool. The

massive part is making the other person sound better. I want him to

make him sound bad, almost. I went to a stage school where I learnt to

dance. Max has the edge. I will use what I've got that maybe he doesn't.

Just getting on the stage that big and having to sing in front of

those people is a big thing for me. He's done it before. I don't know

what the other coaches have planned. What I have planned is an explosion

and it is Max and Bill. I will feel confident up there that I can

entertain people. That is what I will do. I don't want my fiance to

marry me as just me, I want to be the winner of The Voice. I want

that spot. Two artists, one ring, one very big decision for Danny.

take one of you through and send one of you guys home. Danny, it is

a horrible, horrible decision to make. Now, before we come to you,

let's find out what the other coaches think. Will? Danny, that

was a good song choice. They are entertaining, so, Max, you are like

maximum! LAUGHTER You were dancing around the stage. Sometimes you

went flat while Mr Downs was slicing them and dicing them!

APPLAUSE If I had to pick, I would have went with, you know, Bil.i.am

over there! Jessie, they were going for it? That was a battle-and-a-

half. You guys are having fun. Very, very entertaining. APPLAUSE Tom, it

is a horrible decision that Danny has to make. Someone has to go home.

If these were your artists, what would you do? No idea! LAUGHTER

When you were training up, you were evenly matched. It would be

difficult for me to pick one. So it is up to the man there. APPLAUSE

Danny, your verdict is going to send one of these guys home and

take one through to the live shows. What are you thinking? The UK is

probably looking at me and going, "You are an idiot for putting these

two together!" Yeah, that was a stupid thing to do. They are both

pretty much filling the one spot on the team of five that I have to

take into the finals. Max, through this whole thing, I have seen a

spark in you, but over the course of the rehearsals, what I have seen

tonight how much Bill has come on. APPLAUSE I am talking leaps and

bounds, which is why it's such a hard decision to make. Danny, it is

time to make your decision. Who is the winner of this battle? Guys, I

will have to go with my gut on this. The person I'm going to take

through to the live shows with me Bill, it's been a heck of an

experience. How have you found it? Incredible. For me, this is the

second time I have ever got up and sang in front of a crowd without my

guitar. Amazing. It has been a pleasure. Once again for Bill!

APPLAUSE I'm chuffed to have just It was horrible. I'm over the moon.

Doing it for her daughters, this single mum had huge vocals and a

personality to match. I want you to see all of this!

# I said fire... # Dreams came true for this Tom Jones

superfan as he won a spot on his hero's team. I heard a bit of me

there. You have inspired me a lot so that is probably why. They have

both got strong personalities. The pairing is as fair as you can get.

They are singing an Elvis Presley song which is great. They can play

off one another. Aundrea is fabulous. I will give her a run for

her fabulous money! I'm so excited. Oh my God. Assisting Tom is

musician and long-term friend, Cerys Matthews. You have one guy

with a legendry voice. You are singing another song by a fella

with a legendry voice. What are you going to do with it?

As rehearsals get under way... The reality of being coached by his

idol sinks in for Sam. # A little less conversation... #

You are up an octave. I am really happy. Amazing to have that time,

thank you. Whatever help I can give you, I will give it to you. Thanks

very much. Just having that time was really emotional. Aundrea is

getting a reality check. How are you feeling? Tom knows how much I

want this. If I don't make it, I don't know if I will get another

chance. The only thing when you are really wanting something that bad

is not to try and overdo it. Yeah. You will be nervous on the night.

You are doing what you need to be doing. You have a great voice. Let

that work for you. This is not just for me. This is for me and my girls.

I don't want to let them down. the moment, they seem equally

matched, but somebody has got to go home. Right now I'm feeling more

competitive. This is a competition, a battle. I REALLY want it. I have

to win this for me, my girls and I have to prove I'm the one that Tom

something. My eyebrows were so far back I had to pull them out of my

think? Such personality as well as vocals which is lovely to see. Tom,

what a choice you have to make here! There you go. Tom, you have a

really tough decision to make. In rehearsals, they were fantastic.

You are both huge personalities. I picked that song because Elvis

Presley was a huge personality. I am glad that you did that song

justice, more than justice. You did a wonderful job. APPLAUSE It's time

to make your decision, Tom. Who is the winner of this battle? It's

hard. This is the hardest one yet. Yes. Go with your heart, Tom.

you. Sam, how are you feeling right now? Yaaaa... I'm so happy. We have

this thing about the bees and we always go, "It's the bee's knees!"

have spent with you on The Voice. Have you enjoyed it? So much. Too

much. Way too much! This is one of the hardest decisions I have had to

make. They are both fantastic performers. You have done a

wonderful job. Follow your dream because you have it, babe. Thank

you. Can you give us one more spin? Ladies and gentlemen, Aundrea.

APPLAUSE They were great. Yes. fairness, I think personality-wise

he snipped it for me. He can do a lot of other things. Coming up:

Will encounters tension in his ranks. I'm a big boy, I can talk.

He needs to drop a whole bunch of attitude. Our coaches face some

difficult decisions. Who is the winner? This is impossible. I would

be scared to sing with you, guys. APPLAUSE Next up it is Team Jessie.

At the blind auditions, 25-year-old backing singer Kirsten took centre

stage. Everyone in the audience was going for it. That is what I liked.

I feel that I've got a lot more to give than just doing backing vocals.

You are on my team! To be at the front of the stage is my dream.

34-year-old Toni, the blind auditions were a breakthrough.

# I better leave right now. # She conquered her fears. I paired

Kirsten and Toni because both have powerful voices and I wanted to

challenge them both. Rehearsals start with Jessie joined by Ana

Matronic. She's seen so much more than I have regarding the music

industry. She will be a perfect add-on to the team. I'm good at

performing. That is what I will be looking at, trying to give them

tools to make their performance shine. You guys were great. Get

into the words that you are singing. What is it that you are trying to

get this person to think about? In this case, I want you to think

about how fierce I am and you can use that energy to fuel your

performance. It is very nice. # Think. #

I want to see... # You better think. #

The vocal session was amazing. process has been incredible. I will

be judged on not just my voice, but the way I look. It makes me feel

vulnerable, if I'm honest. Come on! # Freedom! #

Toni has a lot of raw emotion. Part of me thinks, "How can I compete

against you?" It was so real. You need to let loose. To get that

honesty, I need to bring as much passion, emotion as I can possibly

get out of myself. My decision will be tough. Toni needs to leave past

confidence issues at the door. Kirsten needs to make sure she is

still in the story. I am excited to see this battle for sure!

worried if The Voice did end, my confidence would go backwards. To

walk out of here and not win the battle, it doesn't seem like an

option. Toni has a life experience. I have been working hard to achieve

my dream of being a solo artist. I am giving it everything. Two more

artists with plenty to prove are about to take to the ring, but who

will be victorious? In this round, it is the backing singer who is

ready to take centre stage, Kirsten Joy. APPLAUSE Going against the mum

of two in search of her second chance, it is Toni Warne. APPLAUSE

think. Tom, let's start with you. Incredible women. Yeah. Both of

them. I wouldn't know who to pick. That is from here. You are two

Danny? Both of you were outstanding. I was sitting there going, "Oh my

God, that's incredible!" You tipped it over the edge, then you did. I

never thought two voices can sound like a choir. I thought I was

hearing a choir! You sing like Ninja assassin singers. Off to

Jessie! This will be tough on you. I would be scared to sing with you,

guys. Seriously, that was not one note out. APPLAUSE You two are

probably two of the best female voices that I have heard in the UK.

APPLAUSE Toni, you don't need a visual to hear the pain and the

passion and the understanding of how much music is in your heart.

It's just there. I can see it. I can feel it every time I am with

you. Every time I'm with Kirsten I see how much sparkle is in your

eyes and how much you want this. Please you are not a backing

vocalist! APPLAUSE You are not meant to be behind nobody! Jessie,

Jessie, who is the winner of this battle? I love you, girls, you know

that, right? Don't cry because I'll cry. The person that I'm going to

be taking through to live is Toni. APPLAUSE We have our winner. Going

through to represent Team Jessie, When I stood on that stage, I

believed that I could do it! I believed my arm was going to go in

the air. Wow! That was TV history. That is how good that was. I would

be so proud if I had just sung that. I'm just beginning my dream!

APPLAUSE The way Toni - she stepped into her fear. She stepped into it

and went what?! So proud! Next up In the blind auditions, barefooted

musician Vince impressed Danny with the power of his voice. All I have

wanted is the opportunity to be able to say yeah, I have had my

shot. There is a rawness in there. Yours is be perfect voice that will

get me through to the next round and beat these guys here. While Bo

has a different style and it was her vocal rather than her title

that was truly upper-class. # Without you. #

You don't need to have power to show emotion. I came on the show to

find a unique voice. You have that voice.

# Through the storm... # I paired Bo and Vince together

because they have contrasting voices. The two will work well

together. In rehearsal Danny hears a problem. There are parts in the

song - not that you are overpowering Bo, maybe you are

giving too much meat into the song. Yes.

# Nothing to win # Nothing left to lose. #

I felt Vince was leading it. If you are going to be a powerhouse,

everyone will say you are trying to drown that girl out.

# Through the storm we reach the shore. #

Him reducing his power is something he hasn't had to do before.

# I'm waiting for you. # He's going to have to learn that as

much as Bo will have to come out of her shell. Winning this battle is

everything to me. There is no Plan B. Your power coming in and the

tone seems to lopside it in your direction, in an unfair way. I get

that. Vince has a powerful voice. To be intimidated by it is the

worst thing you can do. When I'm with Vince he's like this force and

it is kind of scary. Yes. Do you know how good you are? I don't know.

Maybe... Not. I... Vince's biggest challenge is going to be reigning

in -- reining in that power. more artists are about to enter the

ring hoping their lives will change forever. Will it be the girl with

the unique style, Bo Bruce? APPLAUSE Or the powerful rock

decision to make. We will come to you in a minute. Will, they were

fantastic. What did you think? don't know whether to be honest or

say a whole bunch of, like, stuff to throw Danny off. I will be

honest. Bo, you are, like, an amazing singer. It is like I was

watching a Grammy performance, like, wow! APPLAUSE Vince, you are, like,

Dave Matthews selling out your own festivals. You guys are superstars.

APPLAUSE And your whole style, like, I'm going to come up here without

no shoes on, you know what I'm saying, to rock it like, caveman-

style! I love that. APPLAUSE Tom, it is definitely a tough decision

that Danny has to make. Do you know who you would go for? It sounded

like a great duet. It sounded like they should sing together. APPLAUSE

I wouldn't be able to say one over the other. Thank God I don't have

to. Thanks, Tom(!) Go ahead. Danny, this is a tough decision. How are

you feeling? I have grown to know these people over the course of the

show. I love them both the same. Bo, I guess the fragile nature of your

performances can almost underestimate everybody to how good

you are. Until you open your voice and then just magic happens. Vince,

I wanted to hear you reined in a little bit. You executed it

beautifully tonight. Really great. Danny, it is time to make your

decision. Who is the winner of this battle? I'm basing this decision on

who I think will go into the music business straightaway and will sell

The person I'm going to take into the live shows with me is Bo Bruce.

One more time for Bo Bruce who made it to the live shows,

congratulations. APPLAUSE Vince, you are leaving Team Danny. I am

sure you have picked up a lot from this man? I have learnt a new vocal

technique from working on this particular track, so I will be

taking that forward and hopefully... Again, this is nothing against

talent or lack of talent or anything. It is just not today,

that is all. That's all I can say, you know. It was a hard decision to

make. I can only put one person through. The harsh reality is great

voices. One will sell more records # I through my hands up in the air.

Heshima Thompson's audition showed us singing is where he belongs.

Tyler's audition was a chance to re-start his career after the death

of his best friend, Amy Winehouse. We were two halves of the same

person. One note grabbed Will. last thing that you did showed your

range and you are awesome. Thanks. The song you will be singing is

Yeah 3x by Chris Brown. That is a dance track. It is not necessarily

a singer's song. It is something that I can't do. It's not my thing.

I felt like I was forcing them to do something, converting them from

their religion. I through this curve ball at you on purpose. I

need to know who has ability to just figure out how they are going

to overcome that obstacle to think about the problem. He told us it is

an obstacle that you overcome. I had a lot of respect for him. We

will find where we want it to go. How do you feel? I'm cool. No, you

can't say like, "I'm cool" and your face says something different.

I do understand is a work in progress, it is a compromise. I

understand the energy of the piece, then I can be like, yeah. I thought

Tyler had to work on something. He humbled himself to the song. I

applaud that. That shows the artist that he is. But Heshima, he needs

to drop a whole bunch of attitude. What is holding you back from this

particular song? Is that a question? Yes. Nothing is holding

me back. We have to go at it open- minded like what do I need to blow

everybody away? You have some vibes like you are going to choke me!

Just focused. Are you squinting? studio rehearsals, he gets the time

he wanted with the band and he is a lot happier. If your heart is not

into something, it is so hard to give. I can't pretend to love

something if I don't. Can I be honest? When we were rehearsing,

that was probably like the most uncomfortable experience I have

ever had in my life. LAUGHTER swear. You said it was a challenge

and you told us to make it our own. It's worked. I thank you, man.

have brought it to a place where it's now somewhere where all walks

of life can appreciate it. I am impressed he got it. Hats off to

that. I am looking to see how they take a song, they probably would

never have thought they would have performed and how they make it

their own. In front of a live studio audience! On battle night!

This is a hard one. I through this song, it was a curve ball, -- I

threw this song, it was a curve ball. It was a challenge to see how

we could flip it up. Tyler, you knocked me out with your

have bronchitis, pneumonia and 102 fever, I come out on stage with

them every night. Prince is at the show. Prince! As sick as I was,

that was one of the best performances I ever had. We have

I should never have put Jay up against Jaz. They are two fantastic

singers that I would have liked to have kept on my team. I will have

to say bye to one of them. This battle could be a big moment to

don't sing alike, but you have a lot in common and so much raw

range. It was out of this world. I have worked with Justin Timberlake

before and you are better than Justin Timberlake. You probably

Jaz, you hit this one riff I hurt my head because I was like bop,

knocked me out. At the beginning you were flat and you are getting

over your bronchitis. If that is what you sound like with bronchitis,

want to take you on to the lives. You have something in you. You have

They are both soul singers, but there is a contrast. Deniece has a

lot of experience. With Ruth there is a raw energy. Ruth has a

powerful voice. I have a lot of experience. She is like an amazing

singer. It is her or me. So I have to do the best I can. I don't think

Ruth has seen the best of me yet, not yet. The girls waste no time

showing Tom and Cery what they can do. -- Cerys what they can do.

think two-and-a-half minutes, I heard every note that was created

by music! It was beautiful to hear and from Deniece, you are a

consummate professional. Everything says you have been on the stage. We

know you have. Then there is Ruth Brown.

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE Who from the second I seen you over there, I was

captivated. There was one particular note where I looked at

the boys, I looked around, that is what I look for in anything, that

magic moment. You have it! Thank you. Will, there were some special

moments during that. What stood out for you? Before there was a music

industry, we sang in churches, we sang with family, you know, and

then there were the superstars. Deniece you remind me of the

strength and the height of the music industry. You represent that.

Thank you. And Ruth you are 19 years old. I don't know how old

your soul is, child! You have a halo over you where it oozes out of

you where the height of stardom, the height and the pinnacle of the

music industry, fabulousness and the grit, the under, the earth, I'm

singing from my heart. What a battle! APPLAUSE Will, they

represent very different things, but who would you put through?
