Television is not ready for the talent on this show.

I never thought that two voices can sound like a choir.

There's things that come out of you, you just let fly and it works.

This is what The Voice is about.

Last night, the Battles commenced,

and our superstar coaches face some agonising decisions.

It's hard.

Go with your heart, Tom.

Who to carry forward,

and who to send home.

Tonight, the Battles continue.

As the remaining artists step into the ring to fight.

Voice-to-voice against they're own team-mates.

Just one battle stands between them and the Live Shows,

but only their coach can take them there.

This is the hardest thing that I've ever done.

This is hard.

Hello and welcome to The Voice,

the Battle Rounds.

Each coach has paired up their artists to sing against one another

to earn a place in the forthcoming Live Shows.

But after every battle the artists' own coach must decide

who advances in the competition and who goes home.

So, let's meet those superstars making the tough decisions.

Danny O'Donoghue.

Sir Tom Jones.

Jessie J.

And will.i.am.

Let's bring on the Battles. First up, it's team Jessie.

Cassius Henry came to the blind auditions

hoping for a second chance.

I had record deals,

been on Top of the Pops.

I would give my all

to get back into my career.

There are things that you could work on and could be incredible.

I just think you've got a really listenable voice.

While shy construction worker David

built a performance that got all four coaches turning.

You are the reason I came on this show, to find people that can sing!

This is where it gets serious.

This is the Battle Round.

The first battle is between

David and Cassius.

The reason I paired you guys up

is cos I think you can bring the best out in each other.

David, I feel like you can really push yourself with

something like the tone that Cassius has.

And I think that the performance that David has,

Cassius could bring to the table too.

I never thought I needed a new tone

because I'm quite happy with my own tone,

but if we can bring good out of each other,

it's going to be a good thing, like.

We've only got a short amount of time

to get the artists ready for the Battle Rounds.

So, I've brought in Ana Matronic from the Scissor Sisters

to make sure, vocally, they can be the best they can be.

Hi guys.

Today, I'm really looking forward to seeing where

these people are as performers.

And what I'm going to be working with them on, specifically,

is performing and communicating with the audience.

But, in rehearsal with Jessie and Ana,

the energy of their first audition seems a long way away.

I'm not feeling any vibe from either of you.

You are standing here like you don't want to be here.

I would love to see you guys really coming at each other.

I need to see the two guys that I saw in the blind auditions

that I turned around for.

You guys can really use the fierceness of this song.

because one of you is going home.

I think, towards the end of the song, Cassius was holding back a bit

because he was listening out to see what I could do

and perhaps he's got a game plan.

I don't think I've shown everything I've got at this moment.

I think on the night, I believe, he will be surprised.

Come the studio rehearsals, the fight is still missing.

I'm basing my decision on this performance.

-I want there to be tension.

-Like we're enemies.

You need to be, I'm in your face and I'm not scared to be in your face.

and she wants to see which man wants it the most.

Even if you don't go through

you'll watch back and want to show your friends and family.

Jessie's made it clear what I need to do to win the battle,

so I've got to go out there and nail it.

I want to be successful and live the dream.

This is a second chance for me. The opportunity is great.

My only focus is to vocally knock him out.

I do not envy this decision at all.

Danny, what were your thoughts on that battle?

Both of them are fantastic singers.

I thought, confidence-wise, Cassius,

I felt you were there from the top, but David really grew into it

and there was a point where I was waiting for you to just let go

and I was waiting and waiting and you did it,

and you let go and I was like, that's the David that I remember.

I turned for you.

I think I would go for Dave. I thought you killed it.

Will, they were so evenly matched, how do you decide?

First off, I've got to give a pound right here to my home girl,

Jessie J,

because that was a fantastic battle.

Damn, Cassius,

that last name should be Clay,

Cos you're killing 'em, like, wow.

And Dave,

you are just mad fresh and you're confident in your runs

and your licks were just on point.

But, if I had to choose,

I would go with the G over there, Cassius.

Jessie, your decision could change the lives of both of these artists.

I'm actually shaking, like and getting teary,

because I know I was tough on you guys

but I saw so much in that performance

that wasn't there when we first ran through it.

I live for this, for seeing people that want to grow and get better

and you guys, I'm so proud of you both.

Jessie, it's time to make your decision.

Next up, it's team Tom.

Grandma Barbara used her 25-years' experience

to get Sir Tom's attention.

28-year-old Leanne is a holiday camp singer

who won over her toughest audience yet.

You both have very, very powerful voices.

I think you are evenly matched there.

The song that I picked is a Lady Gaga song, which is called

-I'm excited.

The only sad part about it is that only one can go forward,

it's going to be a tough one.

To help prepare his artists for battle,

Tom brought in singer-songwriter and good friend Cerys Matthews.

Cerys knows more about music than anyone else I know

so I think she would be great to help me.

I don't know if I've ever heard such loud voices as you guys.

We've got Barbara who's been there, seen it all,

knows exactly how to play it.

And you've got Leanne, she's got all the natural talent in the world

and yet her nature is quite meek.

She's a very quiet woman, then all of a sudden, boom!

-Leanne, you've got a fair set of lungs on you.

-I try.

They're both strong

so let them go head-to-head.

Compared to Leanne, I've got a lot more years experience.

I've got that passion, I've got that emotion.

Barbara's a big performer and she's got a big personality

so there's a lot for me to go against.

It sounds great.

-The more you go at one another...

-Exactly.

I think Lady Gaga would be scared to get in the ring with those two.

I know I would.

Right now, I'm absolutely pumped for this battle.

We've both got big voices

but I just need to show that I've got the biggest and best.

They're two great singers. That's what makes it a real battle.

It's like two boxers.

I really feed off an audience so once they are in the room

and Tom is there, I can look him in the eye

and show him I want it and mean it.

I cannot wait to get a cat fight going on in that stage tonight.

Entering the ring, two ladies with many differences

but one thing in common - voices that will make your TV shake.

It's the Battle of the belters.

Here's Scotland's glamorous granny, Barbara Bryceland.

Against the 28-year-old with a big voice and big ambitions.

You know, Barbara, I thought you literally brought the house down,

it was incredible, I mean the energy I felt from you was amazing.

You know, Leanne, honestly, I was blown away, I really was.

If it was my choice or my decision,

I would probably tip Leanne over the top.

Like I got a crush and stuff

and she was looking at me and she went like this.

I was like on the edge of my seat like melted chocolate on a seat.

Tom, two big voices. Only one can make it through to the live show.

-You look really proud of both of them.

They're as strong as one another

and this is maybe the hardest thing that I have ever done.

So, I'll do my best.

Well, it's hard,

but I think the one that should go to the live show is...

Leanne's done it.

She's going through to the live shows.

Leanne, everybody.

And is there anything you want to say to Tom?

Tom, thanks for picking me in the first place.

I know it was a tough call, I knew it was from the very second.

It's the hardest thing I've done in my life, honestly.

No hard feelings. I still love you to pieces.

-Who would you have picked?

-Leanne.

I would have picked Barbara

No. Barbara's too much of a pub singer for me. No.

-She's also quite pretty too.

-Yeah.

And I think she's got more of a modern approach to her phrasing.

-And her style of singing, as well.

-Yeah.

She could sing the phone book and it would sound right.

-I'm just so proud.

-You looked beautiful. Well done.

Next up, it's team Will.

Singing a coach's own song is a gamble

but one that paid off for Yorkshire teen Frances.

I can take anything you throw at me.

Singing about her mum.

She thinks she's overweight. I think she's beautiful.

# And that's why I love you

Kate's raw emotion appealed to Will.

I paired Frances and Kate

because they reminded me of me when I started dreaming.

Both of them girls would have been down with our crew

when we started the Peas.

Fran and I were hoping we weren't

going to be paired because we are really good friends.

I think we're just going to not really see it as a battle-battle.

-Just as a duet, as a performance.

-Yeah. Pull each other through it.

Oh, my gosh, we're pals!

Nah!

This ain't the getting along game. It's Mortal Kombat.

Before rehearsals begin, Will introduces the girls to his adviser.

I brought one of my best friends, Dante Santiago,

the person that helped me

bring the artist out of me.

Don't sound like so little.

Project your voice just a little bit because I could barely hear you.

Kate doesn't have the fair advantage right now, you can't hear her

and she knows you can't hear her.

You are going to be battling. So, come into the studio tomorrow,

record it professionally so you can hear what you sound like,

so you have no excuses.

I know how much he loves Kate's voice and it's very different

so I want to show him, look what else I can do.

I felt sorry for Fran when he said that.

It's definitely game on now.

I cannot wait for this battle.

Ultimately, one's going to out-perform the other.

Spending time in the studio with Will

has made me a lot more confident.

It's just made me really believe that I can do it.

Me and Kate got on really well.

I can't think about us as friends now.

I've got to go in there

and fight for what I want.

Entering the ring, the Wakefield student with an urban edge,

Frances Wood.

Taking on the girl who's more used to singing in her bedroom

than on the stage, Kate Read.

You could tell by the hug

that you two got on in rehearsals,

but does it all change when you get into the ring, Frances?

Me and Kate are really good friends,

but we are here for one reason,

so, when you step in the ring,

It's not like, I'm not comparing you, but when you guys

sang in unison,

I couldn't quite tell if it was a battle or a duet.

It was so similar,

I was like, come on, one of you, step and fight more than the other one.

I think it's a really tough decision

because vocally you are on par with each other, yeah.

It's tough.

That's because only one of them can go through to the live shows.

Will, what did you think?

Because, most importantly, it comes down to you.

I don't think you guys sound similar.

Frances, you are amazing,

Kate, the way you sing

is the type of singers I like, right?

It's like Sade, Macy Gray.

I like, you know, Morcheeba, Sneaker Pimps.

That's the kind of stuff I listen to, right?

Frances sounds nothing like Kate, Kate sounds nothing like Frances.

But Frances is a chameleon,

she could sound like whoever's next to her

and that's what you're getting.

Will, it is time to make your decision.

This is hard.

Because it feels like I'll be letting go of friends, you know.

So, the person I want to take with me to the Live Rounds...

I'm not a person who says things to say it,

when I say you're my favourite type of voice,

I mean that with all my heart and this is not the last,

we are going to hang out.

Ladies and gentlemen, it's Kate.

You were amazing, so amazing up there.

I feel honoured, to be honest.

Not many people can say that they've recorded in the studio with Will.

But I'm gutted.

Coming up, Danny starts to have doubts.

If this isn't what you do, there's no point in you being here.

There was a tense atmosphere in rehearsals.

We felt a little like backing singers.

If there's tension, I'm happy for that to be there.

We have big voices but haven't had a chance to show it.

Jessie makes a controversial choice.

Are you serious?

That was probably one of the biggest shocks and upsets I've seen, so far.

Next up, it's team Danny.

Nerves affected teenage lifeguard Aleks' voice

but Will and Danny heard enough potential to turn.

21-year-old children's entertainer Emmy

managed to grab the attention of three of the coaches...

I never in a million dreams thought I would have to make this decision.

..Before opting to join team Danny.

I think the pairing of these two will be great.

You both have very current voices.

I think Aleks could potentially get quite nervous.

He maybe hasn't had as much experience

as some of the other people in the group.

I've never really sung a duet with a girl or a boy or anyone.

It's a lovely line, really nice.

How quick she picked up the song may have thrown Aleks a little bit.

She's good as it, isn't she?

I feel like on a whole lower level.

It's just weird singing like this.

This is where we are allowed singing out of tune, not know the words.

So, we, hopefully don't make that same mistakes when we are on stage,

you know? Fingers crossed.

I did feel I was quite confident in there and I really loved the song.

I really just wanted him to get the tune down

so that I could work out my part.

Did you just do that different just then?

I don't know. Sorry.

If I know that Aleks is feeling nervous about the song,

then that's going to put me, like, on edge.

Emmy is probably getting a bit frustrated in his confidence.

I think I've got a challenge with Aleks.

Do you feel intimidated by the others?

Yeah, man, have you heard 'em?

I have, but I've also heard you.

I do see a lot of myself in you.

Do you believe in yourself?

I didn't do good in school and there's nothing else I can do.

You can go the whole way in this, I'm not kidding you,

but you have to believe in your own talents.

The only difference between Emmy and Aleks is Emmy believes

she can do it.

When it comes to singing, I'm a bit nervous about hitting these notes.

Today is about proving I can do it and that's what I'm going to do.

I've had to give Aleks quite a lot of support,

but I'm not doing that any more.

I've got to focus on myself because I want to win this.

On the night, who is going to come out on top? I don't know.

I really don't know.

Only one of these artists can leave the ring a winner,

but who's got the voice?

Up against the children's entertainer hoping to impress

the grown-ups, Emmy J Mac.

Will, what did you make of that battle?

Aleks, I could feel your shyness.

Emmy J, amazing voice, your confidence was there,

you were walking around the stage, you owned it, right? Mm.

You was right there rockin' it.

-Jessie?

-I wanted you guys to kiss at the end. I don't know why.

It was like a music video. It was like a music video.

What I loved about it was that you guys

supported the fact that you have such different voices.

I feel like I wanted to see more of you kind of going,

this is a battleground. Like, I don't want to go home.

But if it was down to you, and you were their coach,

who would you pick?

It's a real tough one, but...

..I'd take Aleks through.

OK.

-It's not up to you.

-It's up to Danny.

But, first of all, Tom, what did you make of that?

You both seemed a little reserved, to me.

You felt like you were holding back.

-But there is fight in that belly, right?

-Absolutely, 100%.

Danny, this one is totally up to you.

This is going to affect the rest of their lives.

Yeah, I know, I know. Erm...

Oh, man, to try and put something in-between the two of yous.

Danny, it's time to make that decision.

Emmy, I think you are further on down the line than Aleks is.

But yet, Aleks, I think I still have a lot to show Aleks in a way so...

You know, I'm going to base this decision on, I guess,

my role on this show, which is a coach,

and I think the person that's going to go through to the live shows

with me is...

Aleks, you are going through to the live shows.

Are you OK?

It's a big thing you did on there. This is your moment.

Right there for Aleks was a turning point for him and, you know,

although Emmy did a great performance,

I really feel that my job as a coach on the show is to nurture talent

that needs it and he needs it because I really believe he can be great.

I started crying, man. I don't cry with this stuff.

My dream is to do this as a career.

It's one step closer, you know.

Next up, team Jessie.

Despite some tuning issues...

She was all over the place.

..Jessie still believed teenager Ruth Anne had a voice to fight for.

Internet sensation Ben wowed all four coaches

with a polished rendition of a classic.

Whilst Ben is fearless about the upcoming battle...

The real competition is with myself.

I don't think I've got anything to be afraid of.

..Ruth Anne is desperate to prove her critics wrong.

Ruth Ann knows she has a lot to prove

and Ben was so comfortable in his audition,

it's like, what else can you bring to the table?

I'm still as confident

but I will not underestimate the importance of getting this right.

We are lucky to even be here right now.

For this battle, I've got to prove myself more than anyone else here.

I'm going to totally bring it.

Who would you choose now?

Ben didn't pick me so like whatever with that dude. I'm playing.

I would still pick Ben.

Jessie, who is the winner of this battle?

OK, the person I'm going to be taking through to the live shows is...

..Ruth Ann.

I believe in you. OK.

That's right. Home boy should have been on my team.

I would have made the right decision.

That's probably one of the biggest shocks and upsets

I've probably seen so far.

Oh, shut up, you lot.

Next up, it's team Tom.

In Matt and Sueleen's blind audition,

Tom was wowed by the unique sound of their two voices.

I love the harmony. I love everything about it.

But it took the toss of a coin to get them on his team.

-Heads.

-Tom Jones, thank you.

While the quality of Midlands mum Lindsey's vocals

was enough for him to push his button.

-You have a great tone.

-Thank you.

-And you did wonders with that song.

It was a shock being paired up with two people.

They've both got great individual voices.

They blend really, really well together.

It's going to be a really big challenge.

Matt and Sueleen are strong as a duo

because they're so used to working with one another.

It's beneficial.

But I don't think Lindsey should be worried.

She has a very expressive voice.

That can overcome having to sing against two people.

Do you think they're ganging up on you? No, not at all.

I have to be careful because they are just so connected as a couple.

I have to make sure they don't get all of their own way.

But despite outnumbering Lindsey,

Matt and Sueleen are the ones feeling overwhelmed.

You've got the other person you are battling against there,

Tom Jones is there, I've got to try and get my head around this.

It does feel like an accident in slow motion.

What do you two think of Lindsey's voice?

Really strong and intimidating.

We are so different trying to get across what we do as well.

You have such an amazing voice.

Matt and Sueleen felt quite intimidated singing next to me,

which was a bit of a shock.

I should definitely try and use that to my advantage.

Rehearsals over,

Tom and Cerys offer Matt and Sueleen a final few words of wisdom.

-How do you think the duet is going?

-It's such a challenge.

Although I've got a strong voice on my own,

I just think that we are always better when we are together

because we have a chemistry.

Be as natural as you can.

I think we can be winners.

-We can rock it out.

For me, getting through to the live shows is just going to be the most

ultimate thing and a real pat on the back.

Matt and Sueleen are very close as a couple.

They've got the advantage that they are different,

they are quite unique in their own way.

They've got to be competitive and bring the best they possibly have.

Lindsey's got a very refreshing

and healthy attitude to this whole battle.

When you've got one voice singing against two,

that one voice can shine.

I guess I was, kind of, expecting country

That was brilliant, really, really great.

The two of you when you sing together it literally

sounds like one voice, it's a really gorgeous tone.

Lindsey what they have together as a unit you have in your voice as one.

I believe that.

I think you snipped it.

Jessie, it was two versus one, but was it an equal match?

It was very interesting for me to see you guys

again after the blind auditions.

Matt and Sueleen, I turned around for you guys and I remember thinking,

this was something my ear wanted to listen to.

The interesting thing with you Lindsey, you held your own, you know,

I know it must be scary to stand out on a stage with two other people.

It's not easy because you feel like you're half but you're not at all.

Tom has a difficult choice so I'm going to swing it over to you.

What did you think of that battle?

Matt and Sueleen weren't as familiar with the song as Lindsey was,

but you've come up to that

and the harmony is really, really good.

That's fantastic.

He's an absolute legend, isn't he? A complete and utter star.

He's so easy to be around and I think that's been fantastic

for everybody that's been involved in this competition, really, everyone.

It was a very difficult decision for me to make,

really truthfully, honestly.

This job for me is the hardest thing I've ever done in my life

because there are so many great singers

that it's a hard decision for me to make.

It's been a fantastic experience to work with you

and for anybody that fancies having a go at this next year,

definitely do it.

In the blind auditions, cheerleader Hannah had a choice of two,

but waved her pompoms for Danny.

Murray put on a strong performance

and showed Danny he had a voice with experience.

I think they are scared of each other.

Murray's going to look at her thinking she's 20 years old,

she's a gorgeous looking girl and she can sing.

Hannah's going to look at him

and see he's had this experience and can sing his heart out.

I've probably been performing for more years than Hannah's

been on the planet.

Murray's a lovely guy, the same age as my dad.

But at the same time, maybe I use the fact that I'm 20

I've got a lot of energy.

So, Hannah, what's your thing?

I'm at Exeter Uni, and I also do cheerleading.

Cheerleading? So, we'll expect you to keep up with that, Murray.

We're going to have to buy him a set of Pom Poms.

I'm not a dancer.

I concentrate on feeling it,

rather than shaking the booty, as it were.

Performance, that's what we're looking for. We know you can sing.

This is the stage where you should do what you do.

This is what I do normally do.

If this isn't what you do,

then there's no point in you being here.

Danny's told me to up the performance,

to go out there and give it absolutely everything.

and outperform Murray.

She may have the moves but that guy's one hell of a singer.

The thing I'm quite intimidated by -

that I think's quite overwhelming anyway,

Why, why, why?

In the dividing up of the song,

it's like she's getting all the big bits as we're a duo.

They think we need the easier bits to harmonise.

We look like backing vocalists.

How are you feeling with the song?

-We felt a little bit like backing singers.

-Why?

Just because we felt like we were given the safer parts of the song,

and we wanted to take chances as well.

Because you're not getting BIG moments,

you feel that you're not getting moments -

you are, it's just the way you sing them.

I think we were making more of a fuss about it than was necessary.

I've been trying to do this for ten years, I'm 27 now.

Sophie left the pubs of her small home town in Northern Ireland behind

for a bigger audience at her audition.

Whenever I do gig in pubs and clubs,

there's not many people there but I still do it because I love to sing.

She bagged her own American boy, singing the Estelle song that Will produced.

You didn't sing it like Estelle, which is dope.

J Marie is a powerhouse.

Sophie...

I want to challenger her, pit her up against somebody

where she feels, "It's impossible!"

That's what's going to bring the best out of her.

I'm like, "Oh, my God! She's so much better than me!" I'm scared.

I was actually really surprised at how well Sophie did it,

especially for 17, she's got an amazing voice.

I really thought J Marie had it all sowed up.

I felt bad by pairing them, but I don't know,

I'm blown away. So what is your driving force?

I just don't want to go home. The thought of it kills me.

Man, we've been on tour since 1998

and I'm still trying to find a way to stay gone.

It's just hard when you're against someone

and can't compare yourself, cos you just start...

What do you mean?

You held your own.

I think J Marie realised it that that girl's not to be played with.

It would be gutting to be beaten by Sophie, because I want this so much.

To not move to the next level now will just be devastating.

This is going to be hard.
