Four of the biggest music stars on the planet are on a mission

to discover and develop the UK's next great voice.

Will.i.am. Worldwide music producer and founder of the Black Eyed Peas.

Will.i.am speaks for himself.

He is an all-rounder, writes songs, sings, raps and does production.

Jessie J, pop's freshest talent with a double platinum-selling debut album and six top ten hits.

She is a strong character, she's young, but she knows what she wants.

I don't want to use the word "swag", but she has cool swag.

Danny O'Donoghue.

Songwriter and frontman of stadium-filling,

chart stopping band The Script.

Danny is a songwriter, producer.

He is a fresh Irish singer,

so we have a thing in common, we are Celts.

And the legendary Sir Tom Jones.

Six decades in the business and 100 million records sold worldwide.

Tom Jones has been around for ever.

He's such a powerhouse of the industry.

That dude has history. He's toured with Sammy Davis Jr - history.

This is how it works.

If a coach likes what they hear, they hit their button...

..turn round and secure that voice for their team.

But if more than one coach turns,

the artist gets the power to choose who they want to work with.

an amazing opportunity to be mentored by great coaches.

I think it's important that I don't use my experiences

to make me think I've got this in the bag.

I'm Barbara and I'm a glam gran from Glasgow.

I think as a woman we play all roles and I enjoy being a grandmother.

But I'm also an individual as well.

We are getting younger,

not in our age, but getting younger in our head and how we think.

I'm really excited to hear you sing

because you seem to be one of our more experienced contestants.

If that's the case, you've probably been singing for longer than most people in this competition?

Definitely. Before these guys were even born.

I'm 20-something years up the road and I'm still here.

This is really important for me,

because when you become my age, you kind of become invisible.

After 24 years, it's time to get a bit more recognition.

the UK's best vocal talent were invited to the Blind Auditions.

And that includes seasoned professionals, like West End star Kerry Ellis.

I have been singing all my life

but I have been in musicals for about ten years.

I got my first big show, My Fair Lady.

Since then I have been doing Les Mis, Oliver, Miss Saigon, We Will Rock You, Chess, Wicked.

I have been very fortunate to have a really good career,

but it's not every day you get the possibility of working with four superstars.

Were you getting bored of the green make-up?

Is that actually what this is all about!

I am known for being the green face.

Yeah, it was just an opportunity to be able to be myself

and sing my own songs.

-It's a risk.

-It is a risk. But this industry is all about taking risks.

So I'm taking the risk.

Kerry has a lot to prove.

But before she takes the stage, another artist is about to

put all his faith and future in the strength of his voice.

I am David, I am 23. I come from a little place called Leigh in the north-west.

It's not the prettiest place to be.

I used to stack shelves overnight at a supermarket

but I have quit my job, so that I can focus everything on The Voice.

I didn't realise how big it would become for me.

This is my life, and I want it to be my life in a big way.

I've taken a big risk coming on here, I've quit my job.

When I heard it, I heard the same heart and intention and emotion that was there

-when I wrote it, that's why I pushed the button. It was fantastic.

and I have enough girls on the team.

If I'd known you were a man, I would have pressed the bloody button!

I pushed my button because you've got like a butter voice,

but you also have room to grow and become a mega-artist,

as well as I am looking that far ahead down the competition.

Pretty much all my life but professionally about 12 years.

So you are a professional already?

-I've been in musicals for about ten years.

This is the hardest part, where you hear someone sing phenomenal

But it seems to me you've already made it, if you are doing musicals now, you are already there.

The difficulty and the risk that I took was to be publicly said no to.

-That's strange, but then it's character-building for me

and it's like, well, you know, you get back on the horse

and carry on and that's what I have done my whole career.

Getting somebody like Kerry on the show lets you know how tough this competition is.

I mean, even though she's successful and she's in West End musicals, she still wants to come on here

and compete because we have so many great singers on this show.

That's the hardest part, you know, how many do you pick?

I have definitely always been that kid growing up

that's just never fitted in. Always been slightly eccentric.

Every day he's singing, can't shut him up, but it's his life really.

He's always had a very unique style.

My mum's horrified, she says, "Look at the state of his boots."

But he is just Vince, still my little boy.

You couldn't look more different if you tried.

-Have you ever worn anything like that?

-I don't think I'd get in it, to be honest.

No, but he used to be a punk.

-What colour was your hair back in the day?

-A few red streaks down the side.

I definitely, at times, you know, doubt myself.

I definitely have times when I can't do this.

The fact I am not just going to be judged straight out

on the way I look is quite scary.

Sometimes an artist's voice is totally at odds with their image,

which is why we have blind auditions.

So, what kind of vocal surprise does 17-year-old Shansel

have for our coaches?

I'm Shansel, I'm 17 and I'm a student.

Everyone says, "I've been singing all my life,"

but when I was nine months old my mum and dad bought a karaoke machine

and they couldn't keep me away with it.

Shut up, will ya? We're trying to watch telly.

They will say, "Can you shut up," because I don't stop.

Everything I do, I'm singing. They're ripping their hair out over it.

I ain't been taught. I'm not posh. I'm very down-to-earth.

People don't expect the music I sing to come out of myself

because I don't put myself across like that.

It comes as quite a shock to everybody.

People can't tell that I'm a 17-year-old by the way I sing.

My mum says I sound like a 30-year-old.

I've never done anything like this before.

I've never performed in front of a load of people.

It's like music royalty out there, isn't it?

and I do a bit of singing on the side.

I'm quite a cheeky chappy.

I started doing gigs and talent contests from the age of ten,

working my way up the ladder down in South Devon in the showbiz industry.

When my friends are out on Friday and Saturday nights partying, I'm gigging and working.

I feel that now is the right time for me

to showcase my talent to the world.

My name is David Faulkner, I'm 28, I work on a construction site.

I started singing when I was about 20-21.

Through school I didn't sing because it wasn't cool to be a singer.

Most of the guys on-site haven't seen David perform.

I'm one of the only ones who have.

When I tell them that he can sing, they can't believe it.

I didn't hear him sing for around two or three years into the relationship.

He would go to his bedroom and shut the door.

I'd be sitting downstairs. That's how I first heard him.

I'm quite a shy person. I'm not outgoing.

When I'm singing, it's just something else.

I haven't done an audition like this before.

It is important to me. To be doing this as a day job would be amazing.

It's a dream.
