The gloves are coming off, the mics are going in hands.

This is fight or lose.

I can't stop crying.

Hello, and welcome to The Voice, the first of our battle weekends.

Tonight, team-mates will pair up to fight each other voice to voice.

Their own coaches will decide who stays in the competition.

But this year, in a dramatic twist, it might not be over for the loser.

This is how it works...

Battle lines are drawn

when the coaches select who they want to sing against each other.

This battle is between...

Moni, and I'm pairing you up with...

..Ash.

Each duo then receives intensive training from their coach...

..and one specially invited battle adviser.

Helping Danny is multi-platinum selling artist, Dido.

This is a pressured situation. You've got to go out and think,

"I want to get to the next round, and I don't want you to."

Helping Jessie is producer and song-writing sidekick, Claude Kelly.

I'm looking for a personality,

originality and talent.

If you don't have that, in my opinion, you're not The Voice.

Re-teaming with Sir Tom is Welsh musician

and lead singer of Catatonia, Cerys Matthews.

Last year, a member of Tom's team went on to win the competition,

so I hope that this year we're going to have the best of the crop as well.

And Team Will sees the return of his right-hand man,

founding member of the Black Eyed Peas, Dante Santiago.

You may be the best singer in the world, that doesn't matter.

In this game, only the strong survive.

You have to have that oomph.

With training complete, it's battle time.

In the ring, it's about the artist that delivers that knockout blow.

Two singers, one song, one winner.

But this year, there's a twist...

Even if an artist does lose the battle, they have a second chance.

Steal!

Four people will get a lifeline.

Because each coach gets one steal.

OK, so four superstar coaches on one mission - to find The Voice.

So, let's get started. It's Team Tom.

In the blind auditions, LB was singing to one man in particular.

If anybody would be a good mentor for me, it's got to be him.

He took on one of Tom's classics, and the legend took on LB.

I'm really, really happy that you turned around, Mr Jones. Yes!

Jamie is a jack of all trades, but wants to be master of one - singing.

I work four or five jobs to get an inkling of music in my life.

And it was a job well done, with a place on his idol's team.

-I'm going to have to go for Team Tom.

-Yes!

Well, this battle is between...

because they're both of a soulful nature.

It's very exciting as a musician to be part of this.

I've no idea what the singers are going to be like and how

they're going to react in a battle situation as well.

When Love Comes To Town is a big song, so to keep it pumping

all the way through, that is not an easy thing to do.

You know, it's early days,

but there's somebody that can sing the heck out of this song.

There's a reason why that man's been in the business for like 60 years.

It was kind of that sort of, "Oh, my God, he's singing!"

He gave us the standard which needs to be delivered at.

And the battle had already begun in studio rehearsals.

Once they started performing I thought,

"I better get out of the way, or they're going to walk over me."

He pulled out a little falsetto and it definitely pricked my ears up

and made me think, "Hang on, he's got something different here."

If I feel like Jamie's going to outshine me,

then I will have to pull something out of the bag to make sure

that he's not the only star on the stage.

I'm going to bundle up every gig I've done in 14 years

into one performance.

There are certain times where you do have to fight for what you want.

Whoever's were to put their best in is going to win, it's that simple.

Two powerhouses from Team Tom, but only one winner.

First, the big man with a big voice, Jamie Bruce!

Against the Birmingham belter, LB Robinson!

I'm a bit scared.

-That battle just rattled the whole room.

Congratulations, man, that was brilliant. That was like the perfect battle to me.

You helped each other out in the performance,

you understood it was a battle at the end of the day as well.

Jamie was moving around, I was mesmerised by him,

but then LB came in, I was like, "Oh, my God."

You know, I think for two different styles of singing,

I think I would tip with LB.

I thought the battle was amazing,

especially when Jamie was trying to push LB.

I thought you were going to like body slam him, like,

That was really cool, I wish I had some of that.

But, in this particular battle, I'm going to run with LB.

His range, like he hit the lows, he had the highs,

he had some nice runs. He was great. It was cool.

Firstly I'd like to say welcome to The Voice.

You both really, really showed what you can do.

The energy was great, but I would agree with the guys,

for me it's LB on this one.

I think what I'm actually going to do is turn to the coaches

It was tough, it was a tough one.

Well, that was a hard choice for me to make, but I went with my feeling.

Jamie is more my kind of singer.

After the comments from the three other coaches,

I thought that was it, I thought he would be swayed.

I was shocked that Tom picked Jamie over LB,

but this is why we're different coaches,

we have different teams and we make different decisions.

Bring on the next round, I'm not going home, I can't leave.

I think I can see something that the other coaches can't.

Next up, its Team Will.

Charity worker Matt Henry got a full house of superstars in the bag

after his soulful performance.

I've been dreaming about this moment for I don't know how long.

Oh, my God!

While musical theatre trained Jordan's blind audition

also ended on a high note...

That was just incredible,

because of the power and the range from the lowest to your falsetto.

The first battle is going to be Matt combating his kung fu tricks

against Jordan's kung fu flips.

Matt had all four coaches turn for him.

Jordan can sing high, he's got range.

Everybody needs a bit of Dante in their life.

I want talent, but you have to have charisma,

that's going to draw attention to you.

What do you feel about the song?

As a singer, I never really do Stevie Wonder because he's such a legend.

I think he's putting limitations on himself.

In this game, only the strong survive.

I think I may have lost the first round to Jordan.

I need to somehow up my game.

And at studio rehearsals, Matt discovers his inner fighter.

Matt came out sliding like, yes, that was cool. I like that.

I spoke to my mum about it and she kind of reminded me

of birthday parties, we'd all be doing the electric slide.

Straightaway, I started to find a connection with the song.

He's an amazing performer.

I think I'm going to have to make sure that I bring it right up.

You were a little show time there. I would just pull it back.

In piano rehearsals, Jordan was like psshhww! And Matt was like, eurgh!

But today, Matt was like, shwoaw!

It's amazing.

I've got to go out there tonight

and take away all the musical theatre stuff and do Stevie Wonder.

Hopefully tonight, I'm going to bring the heart and truth

that's needed to win this battle.

It's a real tough one.

Vocally, you both are amazing and this dude has a really,

I thought it was a great battle. For me, I think Matt had more soul.

There was a natural thing there. Very natural.

But I must say that Jordan put up a hell of a fight

and what he does, is a unique thing.

Your dance moves, Jordan, were just unbelievable. You meant it.

You caught eye line with me

and I was like, oh, my God, he's going to kill me!

I think, when it's so close like that, I go on the feel thing

and the soul thing and Matt, for me, tipped it.

that was like Tom Cruise with shoes on. That was like fresh.

within me and that is an amazing thing to bring out

of someone, as a coach.

You've got Jessie and you've also got Tom.

Matt, because the power, once again, is in your hands.

I have been a huge fan since the blinds,

I made it very clear how I felt then.

I was just a little disheartened when you went with Will.

If this is my second chance to say to you as a singer,

I can push you right now, then, please come and join me.

You know, when I was auditioning for the blinds and you all turned round

and I had a gut instinct?

but - mua-ha-ha! - I have him now.

I care more about singers going through in the competition

than singers going through in my team.

And if I were to pick Matt, which was the obvious choice

because he sang fantastic, no-one would have stolen Jordan.

Will.i.am and now I've got the experience of working with Jesse J.

Next up, it's Team Danny.

At the blind auditions,

partially sighted, Andrea, took a brave step into the unknown.

I've now lost 90% of my vision.

Music really became my get out.

But it was her voice that convinced Danny to turn...

I'm not entirely sure whether anyone turned around or not.

Not only have we turned round

but the whole of the UK just turned around too.

..whilst soap star, Alice, swapped the small screen for a big stage.

# So call me baby...#

You might have seen me in Hollyoaks.

Genuinely, with a voice like that,

-you should probably give up the acting.

-I want to be just me now

and I'm ready to show people that I can sing.

Hey, guys. For my battle adviser, I've brought in Dido.

She's duetted with some of the biggest and the best

from Eminem to Massive Attack.

In an artist, I look for someone with a unique voice,

someone with a voice that I remember, you know,

who can make it their own, who can bring off the emotion of the song.

The song I've chosen is People Help The People, by Birdie.

Alice is brilliant at performing, but, to me,

this song might give me the edge because of its emotional style.

Her voice is so pure and innocent.

I'm not used to showing who I am in front of millions of people.

I'm used to playing a role.

# If I had a brain... #

Really plan where you're going to breathe,

then you get that little bit of extra emotion.

Just amazing at being able to do it with such feeling and I struggle,

because I'm used to putting on a persona and not being me.

You all right? Come here, love. Don't cry.

I think Andrea has the emotional upper hand,

but if Alice just knew how to tap into her emotions,

I think it would just sway it.

And at studio rehearsals, Alice begins to find the heart

and soul that Danny needs.

Really nice, yeah, sounds great.

Alice has found more emotion in the song, so I have to step up

my stage presence and that is the part I find most difficult.

Who do you pick out of it?

Could it be Andrea overcoming everything that she needs

to overcome, or is it Alice finding out who she is?

That's a true battle.

It is so important for me to connect with the emotion of the song

and I just hope that Danny can see that.

The fact that I won't be able to see most of what is going on,

isn't going to stop me focusing on the performance.

I'm going out there to fight for my place and Team Danny.

Only one of these artists can stay on Team Danny.

Here comes the Irish songbird. It's Andrea Begley.

We're going to find out what your coach, Team Danny,

has to say in just a moment, but first, let's go to Will.

-What was your thought on that battle?

-That was beautiful.

Your voices sounded angelic. It was amazing.

For me, the song suited Andrea more than Alice, but I feel that

Alice has so much more to give that I don't feel like I saw.

You know, Alice, that was an incredible performance.

A lot of walls to break down.

Emotionally showing yourself off to the world and the way you want

it to be presented.

I'm so proud of you for showing us. I really am.

Andrea, you know, what people around here don't realise,

is the amount of calculation that Andrea has to make before she even

gets to the stage, how many steps is it up to there?

Am I facing the right way? That's even just before you've sang.

I'm really proud, really, really proud.

I'm going to go with the feeling that I always trust

and that's the hairs on the back of my neck.

And every time this person sings,

the hair goes up the back of my neck, so that's...

Andrea.

Come on, put your hands together for the winner of our battle,

it's the fantastic Andrea. Well done.

And Alice is now available to steal.

Now, because Jesse has already stolen,

only Tom and Will are able to steal.

I have learnt so much and I'm still learning so much

and I can see the improvement in myself already.

I just don't want that to end, at all.

Alice, it's looking like, unfortunately,

you've not been stolen.

She was absolutely fantastic,

so, can we make some noise for Alice, please? Come on.

Alice, you know, she really opened herself up to the song

and showed that she can really break down walls that have been

stopping her from progressing. I'm really proud of the two of them.

Andrea, is just special.

The emotion, the hard wisdom and the pain that she sings with,

you know, she's battled really, really hard to be where she is today.

I was just happy, regardless of Danny's decision,

that I'd put in a good performance, but obviously,

I'm even more delighted that he picked me.

Coming up, Jessie's first battle pairing steps into the ring.

This decision is so hard.

At the blind auditions, 31-year-old beauty queen,

Sarah's high notes were a hit...

..proving she was more than just a pretty face.

I think you're going to go quite far in this competition.

While 20-year-old Katie, took inspiration from the past,

and her powerful rendition of a classic, caught Jessie's attention.

-I've never ever had any vocal training.

-You do now, girl.

In this battle, we have Sarah and Katie, and the person that

I brought with me to assist me is Moonhead, AKA Claude Kelly.

He is one of the most influential vocal producers that I know.

A great artist should have a passion for what they do

and an idea of who they are and they have to have confidence.

When we first got together,

the first thing that I thought was, oh, no, she's had

a lot of training, had a lot of experience, which I haven't had.

# I'm ready to go lead me into the light...#.

I don't know why you're so nervous because you started singing,

you opened it and this powerhouse voice came out. Oh, tears.

Come on, you can do it.

Katie was emotional

because she was probably putting pressure on herself, the same as me,

but maybe, like, because she's a wee bit younger, she let it out.

# You're from a whole other world...#

All my influences and stuff,

I feel like they've just been forgotten in this song.

When I hear Sarah singing it, I think it really suits her voice.

What do you want to feel?

-I don't believe you yet, Sarah.

-Me neither.

I don't believe your face.

Once I get more familiar with the song, then I'll believe it.

I think I kind of like... It means so much to me

and I don't really show that, but I'm just going to like,

channel this emotion in the battle, so that I use it in a positive way.

Sarah and Katie, they're the strong female battle in my group

and I need them to not let me down.

I'm 31, so it could be my last chance to show what I can do.

I shouldn't be intimidated by Sarah, because I'm different than Sarah.

I'm just going to give it everything, everything I've got.

You don't want to go to people, "I'm a singer but I'm not that good."

And the coaches' teams are beginning to take shape.

Will worked his game plan, picking Jordan...

..and was swayed by the classy control of Cleo.

Danny was drawn to the pure voice and emotion of Andrea

while Jessie began building her team

with Ash and Sarah...
