12 team-mates put friendship aside

and fought for a place in the knockouts.

Each coach has paired up their singers

to fight for a place in the next stage of the competition.

And who stays and who goes is up to the artist's own coach.

Here to turn singers into superstars,

four of the biggest names in music.

Sir Tom Jones.

And Danny O'Donoghue.

Tonight, four superstar coaches and six amazing battles.

So let's do this. Here is how our first battle is shaping up.

It's Team Will.

At the blind auditions,

24-year-old Essex girl Leanne was looking for her big break.

I've been in girl bands, tribute acts,

but I go two steps forward and then two steps back again.

And Will pulled out all the stops to recruit her.

-I turned around first...

I'm going to go for Will.i.am.

Carla and Barbara's operatic audition was a real one-of-a-kind.

And their soaring vocals left Will smitten.

is because I have a talent for picking talent.

After a shaky start,

I really feel that we did well.

This is such a big moment for me,

that I've always wanted to do.

Wow! What an incredible battle!

Do you think it was an even match today?

For me I think you're both incredibly talented. That's not changed at all.

For me, I just thought the song choice was horrific.

It was a great palette to see two worlds come together,

and that's reason why the song was picked.

It's the most karaoke classic and you guys are better than that song,

and I was just like, really?

I'm always a fan of trying to get different styles and mixing them.

I think one of the reasons why people can't connect with opera

is because it is in a different language.

If you maybe had have sung in English,

maybe it would've had a different theme to it....

And a song that's fresh.

-That no-one's heard sung a thousand times.

-Yeah.

Opera is appreciated all over the world,

so to say it's not popular because of English, it's not true.

Music is supposed to bring us together,

whether you're singing in Latin,

Zimbabwe, whatever you're speaking...

Hailing from a small town in Wales,

18-year-old Elise had her sights set on the big time,

and Tom couldn't resist playing his trump card.

We're the only two Welsh people up on this stage

so that's all I have to say.

Despite her inexperience,

young mum of two Cherelle was determined to set an example.

I want my children to be proud of me. If you try, you can live your dream.

The thing that I was listening to

was the passion that you put into it.

Elise and Cherelle both sound great.

And the song is All About Tonight.

It's going to be a tough one.

Look out.

My battle adviser, Miss Cerys Matthews.

We know one another very well and I respect her judgement.

Being in a battle formation, it's really important to try

and find your own voice and try and do something a bit different.

It's not easy.

I thought it was a great battle.

Because you are so closely matched, I was looking for who was more

comfortable on the higher notes and I think Elise,

you were a lot more comfortable on the higher notes, because you had

a certain grit and gravel in your voice that I find really soothing.

I don't know who I would choose, to be honest with you.

I would choose Cherelle, but then I would choose Elise

but then I would go back to Cherelle.

And then I'd go back to Elise. So I don't know.

It's going to be tough on Tom.

TFT, tough for Tom.

Oh, thanks. That's the problem, you see.

They're two strong singers.

But all in all, it's very, very difficult for me.

I was shocked he chose Cherelle.

I would've absolutely went with Elise, hands down, all day long,

but you never know what the old silver fox has under his sleeve.

Cherelle has got a really soulful voice, you know,

and I just lean that way.

With Elise, she is young and she can do other things, but it was close.

Next up - it's Team Jessie.

At the blind auditions rap and soul duo De'Vide

used their distinctive styles to serenade Jessie.

Team Jessie, baby! Yeah!

Danny's more of a bedroom singer, but his unique tone was enough

to take him through.

This is like the third time I've ever sung publicly.

Sheesh!

The next battle is between Danny and De'Vide.

I put them together because for me they were the two quirkiest.

And you will be singing Best I Ever Had, Drake.

Yes. That is sick.

Cos I rap I was thinking, that's a perfect song.

I'm just feeling on top of the world right now.

Helping Jessie is Grammy-nominated writer and producer Claude Kelly.

The chance of failure is high.

This is the time to see who really rises to the top

and who buckles under the pressure.

Take it from the top with the rap.

'The session with Jessie, for me, was kind of'

real not hit, a lot of miss.

I'm the only person that's given a rapper a chance in this competition.

So don't take that for granted cos right now,

he ain't scared of you two at all. I can tell you that.

It's like a big glove and I'm an extra-small hand trying to fit

into there, do you know what I mean?

I'll be bluntly honest,

I don't know if I made a mistake in turning round for De'Vide.

But at studio rehearsals,

De'Vide are determined to prove Jessie wrong.

Lex and Barney have obviously gone away

and had a talk about how they can together bring something as De'Vide.

Lex's rap was much better, but Danny for me seems a little afraid.

You look like you're worried all the time. Just enjoy it.

We've both had little stutters here and there.

They've got a lot more experience than me

so the nerves definitely need to be controlled.

Relax.

I think Danny's lack of experience is starting to show.

The tables are turning.

'De'Vide had a shaky start. They've come back really strong.

'I really do feel I have to prove myself here.'

'When we go out there, it's all about proving to Jessie

'why she picked us and that we deserve to be here.'

It's a battle of three from Team Jessie.

Going solo, it's a London lad Danny County.

But doubling up, it's the Ipswich boys De'Vide.

It looks like none of our coaches have decided to steal De'Vide.

Next up, it's Team Will.

Belfast fashion student Leah uses singing

to showcase her unique style.

I think fashion is important,

whether you are a musician or an artist, they go hand in hand.

And her quirky vocals proved a hit with the coaches.

I'm going to go with Will.

Charity worker CJ's performance was all about the beat.

Everything I do stems from how it's going to sound, rhythmically.

And won him the final spot on Will's team.

You are going to be dope, but that thing says "voice" not "hands".

If you are just going to judge it from the blinds, Leah is victorious.

But CJ can turn this whole thing around.

That's why the battles are the battles. It's about to get tough.

Michael Jackson. Come with it.

I didn't think in my wildest dreams that

I would ever do something like this, but now I just have to bring it.

'Leah has undeniable talent,'

but CJ, I think, when it's game time, he's ready to go.

You surprised me a whole bunch, though.

There's definitely a chance I could lose this battle, CJ is so good.

If I didn't turn for you, I would have been missing a person.

I think that is something I can bring to the song.

I think that one of my weaknesses would be the stage performance.

That is actually something that CJ is so good at.

but performance-wise, I kept watching CJ.

so you really need to show it in your body and performance.

they're so different from one another.

But just watching the performance, I think I would lean towards CJ.

At the blind auditions, 22-year-old waitress, Lovelle,

delivered a performance that left Jessie wanting more.

Believe in me because I believe in you.

I'm going to pick you, Jessie.

33-year-old, Nate, has already had success.

Welcome, Nate James.

But fame slipped through his fingers.

Got signed, got dropped, got signed, got dropped.

In the next battle we have Nate and Lovelle.

She can sing higher than I can.

She's prettier than I am, she's younger than I am.

She's got a lot of things going for her, that Lovelle.

And you will be singing No Air, by Chris Brown and Jordan Sparks.

So Nate has had albums out, he's toured countries.

I don't feel scared about it.

It's not your obvious battle song. It's a love song.

# Tell me how you're going to be without me... #

I had to really get tough on Nate.

He was really holding back and emotionally, was so blank.

-Claude was like, come on!

-I'm going to be brutal.

-She's carrying you right now, emotionally.

I don't mean to be horrible,

but I feel like it went a bit better for me.

Maybe when I'm singing to him, maybe he can just bounce off of that.

-My name is Lovelle, honey, love me.

-Love Lovelle.

I love this.

I think with having had a career so far, I've got a bit of baggage.

I just need to get that off and just look forwards.

But at studio rehearsals, Jessie's still not convinced.

You could make this such a beautiful performance,

but I want you to grow into it. You guys could start back to back.

I think it was the first time that I really felt the song

and I got goose bumps.

As I always say, for me, this is never a tough decision,

because I'm actually just very proud of being part of this show

and being able to showcase two artists

that deserve to be at this point anyway.

purely on the person that I feel like I could coach better.

pavements of Belfast straight into his idol's team.

So, it's Smith & Jones going up against Conor.

They're both guitar players, they both have youth on their side.

I think it's going to be an all-out battle.

Danny is taking battle advice from an artist

with over 30 million record sales, Dido.

Singing is such a sort of personal thing, and making it

a competition with someone, but you're also trying to make the best

performance with them, that's a tough little thing they have to do.

Conor's voice is like, whoa, powerful.

That is one of our worries, that when on stage,

were going to be, like, left behind.

But every time the three of you are singing together,

there can't really be a lead. Just get right in there.

Like, "Conor, will you talk instead of shouting?!"

Stage-wise, I think it's going to look great, two guitars up there.

What am I going to do? Just be in the middle?!

They are little lovebirds, aren't they?!

Sometimes we have conflicting ideas.

You stop for two seconds and then you turn around and they're just at it!

No offence to you, but me and Conor are musicians as well.

I think being in the competition has helped us

become stronger as a couple and it's all going to help us to go forward,

I didn't pick Smith & Jones, not because of the talent,

you know, because they're right up here,

it just so happened on the day that Conor was up here.

So, after a second round of vocal warfare,

the coaches continue to pick their perfect teams.

But Will and Danny are still holding out on those precious steals.

Come on! He deserves to go through!

Team Will were first into battle,

he chose Leanne and had no doubts in picking Leah.

Jessie added two more to her team with Danny and Lovelle.

Cherelle's heart and soul convinced Tom she was his girl.

And Danny chose Conor to go forward and sing again in the knockouts.

So, that's the state of play after tonight's battles

and what a night, they have sung their hearts out.
