Today's auditions are all about the voice,

but style and beauty are still important to our first artist.

My name is Alice Fredenham, I'm 28 and I'm a beauty therapist.

We are loving the wardrobe today.

Are you a big fan of '50s style, by any chance?

Yes. I just love vintage fashion, and also antiques,

-anything from the 1940s, '50s era.

-OK.

-Well...

-It especially helps the woman's figure, I think!

I love, you know, Rita Hayworth and...

those old kind of Hollywood glamour-style people.

You know, get to dig into a past time,

and just dream for a little bit!

This will be the first time my family have come to see me sing live

-ever in my life.

-When was the last time you remember hearing her sing?

She sang in a school production of

Joseph And His Technicolor Dreamcoat.

She sort of didn't sing a great deal in her early teens,

but then as she's got older, she has been singing.

And we say, "We should come and see you, Alice."

She said, "No, no - I'm not ready yet.

"I'll let you know when I'm ready."

My confidence has grown loads in the last few years -

I think that just comes with age as well.

I've done a few gigs in pubs around London,

and I've sung at a few weddings in my time, but

singing to the audience today will be

the biggest audience I've ever sung to.

I've not really had a lot of experience in show business before!

So, erm,

it's just a great opportunity, and it's so much fun

to take part in something like this.

It's a win-win situation for me, really.

Whilst Alice waits, next up is part-time model Sarah Cassidy.

She's used to turning heads, but can she do the same to those chairs?

I'm a part-time model, and I think I do it because

I just like getting glammed up and I'm a bit of a poser, to be honest!

When I was 24, I came third in Miss Scotland.

I wasn't going in to even get in the top three,

I was just wanting to wear the big dress, to be honest!

I love modelling, but I just want to be like the whole package,

and do the singing and be glamorous and dance and do the whole thing!

While Sarah has time for some finishes touches,

Alice's moment of truth has arrived.

I'm hoping that they'll turn around today

so that they can see, erm, me perform.

I've got a lot to offer on that side of things, as well as just my voice.

because there's a huge difference between singing

for singing, and singing to make people listen.

difference of going, "Hi, I'm over here, come and listen,"

and just kind of singing. And I felt that you were just kind of singing.

It kind of just felt like I was in a jazz bar

or in a restaurant and someone was playing and you were singing.

- You know what I mean? - OK, thank you.

Stylistically, for me, I just felt it was a little bit safe.

- Yeah. - That was the only reason

why I turned around. By the way, you're a gorgeous-looking girl.

Erm, the reason I didn't turn around is because,

while you're doing jazz,

I didn't... It didn't feel like you understood your instrument.

Like, are you, erm...?

Are you a trumpet? Are you flute?

Like, what instrument are you amongst the band?

"Look - I am the star amongst this jazz ensemble,

"and this number that I'm doing."

But I applaud you for bringing jazz and picking that song.

The reason I didn't turn around at first

was because your voice was really small at one point in the song

and then when you hit that last note at the end,

that's when you made me feel like a dumbass, so...oops.

I need you on my team to go up against these

because they have people who are similar.

JESSIE: Vocally, there are two things.

I can coach you technically.

I can teach you breathing exercises that are going to help your range.

DANNY: We all can do the same thing.

I know, but I didn't sit here and go, "I've done this, and I produced this,

"and I've been on tour with U2," like this.

I feel like, as a female, it's so important...

And I've said this a few shows ago,

they will never understand how nerve-racking it is

to be a female stepping on stage.

What's the difference? It's not like you're a subspecies. You're the same!

No, it's a whole different game for a girl. I, personally, think that.

The emotional side of it. I'm going to throw something out.

I think you're going to go quite far in this competition.

And I think it's really important to you to understand

that this isn't just a TV show, this isn't just going to be fun,

this is really serious and it's...

I'm a bit concerned about the coaches not being able to see me.

I'm worried they're going to think I'm a middle-aged librarian,

cos that's a bit what I sound like.

This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for me.

When you went to the up-tempo part, you threw it away - I felt anyway.

The hard part for me is seeing a guitarist.

I had no idea, to pull off those vocals as well,

and play guitar at the same time.

I know how hard that is, I commend you on it.

I'm so glad he turned around.

So I'm glad, because sometimes Will hears things that we don't.

In fact, a lot of times he hears things we don't.

So, the first part was magical. And it was flawlessly executed.

Then I can see why you wanted to bring it up a notch,

to show that my voice should not just be heard over merely guitar,

but I can also hang with the band.

I could see the dynamics on how you wanted to counter-play it.

You were powerful in the beginning and you are powerful at the end.

And you on my team, it's going to be fresh

because I think you're super-dope.

Of all the coaches, will.i.am has come with the biggest bag of tricks

and tactics and the others know it.

I picked up some tactics along the way, but I'm still tic-tac fresh.

-Nick Tatham needs music more than most.

For him, it's not just a career choice.

Music is definitely in my medication.

When I'm playing, I don't really think about it.

I get so involved into the song,

and I think that's when the Tourette's disappears.

So, yeah, yeah.

Tourette's Syndrome is a chemical imbalance of the brain

which just makes you twitch mainly,

or physical tics,

like I'm doing now actually!

That's basically as much as I know!

School, growing up, was quite a bad time for me.

I just got bullied and stuff.

I think people in those days didn't understand.

I found that the main thing that really got me through

my Tourette's and my bad time having it as a child, was my music.

Tourette's makes me who I am. Nothing's going to change that.

because it's part of me now.

I'm Carla Mainey, I'm 47, and I teach sailing.

I'm Barbara Kelly, I'm 54, and I do teacher training.

Barbara and I met about ten years ago on a sailing tour of America.

Carla and I hit it off straight away and we've been singing ever since.

Our style of music isn't maybe to everybody's taste.

I think we have very big voices for little people.

But we like it!

A lot of people think that women our age need to be mothers

but not really be out there.

I think times are changing.

We live in a world where everything's possible.

Carla phoned me and said we were getting together

to sing for The Voice and I said, "I'm not going on television."

She said, "Yes, you are!"

Some people don't like the spotlight,

but only find their voice when they sing.

Like 22-year-old Laura Oakes.

I love singing at weddings, because the atmosphere is great, you know.

It's such a happy day for the people that are getting married.

It's someone else's big day.

I can kind of just be in the background.

But now, this is my big day,

and this is my time to be in the spotlight.

Like Laura, Jessica Steele is another shy girl

who finds confidence through singing.

I've been singing since I were little, really.

I become somebody else when I'm singing.

I lose all my insecurities.

I leave all my troubles behind and it just makes me feel,

like, really good.

I've entered other singing competitions in the past,

and it didn't really go as well as I'd hoped.

Cos I used to be really, really confident, and...

..and I'm just hoping that this will give me that confidence back.

I think I'm just, like, scared of getting another knock-back.

So, whilst Jessica waits for her moment,

it's already arrived for Laura.

I'm just trying to prove to myself that I can overcome being shy

and being in the background, and that I can be centre stage.

Erm, I'm Jess, and I'm from Sheffield.

There's a specific reason why I didn't turn around.

You have a very, very unique,

star quality voice, you know?

But it wouldn't be fair to a singer that I have on my team

that is similar to you.

And I told her I'm going to fight.

Now, I would be lying if I said I was going to fight,

and then picked somebody similar to her.

So that's the only reason why I didn't turn around.

But I don't know why anybody else didn't.

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE JESSIE: How old are you?

I'm 21.

21. And what do you do every day?

What do you do for a living?

I teach little kids to sing.

Ooh, OK, so, I didn't turn around because I don't think you're ready.

There was a lady that came here last series and none of us turned around.

Then she took our advice, went away, and came back a year later,

and we all turned around.

And I feel like that's exactly where you're at.

And I feel like if you worked on your breathing,

if you worked on your diction...and I don't want you to be sad.

I really don't, cos you need to be so proud of yourself

that all those little kids that you teach, honestly, are watching you.

I feel the same thing that she's feeling.

I think that you need a little time.

I like what you did with the song, though. I liked the idea of it.

People forget, half is talent, half is thick skin.

cos that just weren't good enough.

For some artists, The Voice is their first shot at the big time.

For others, it could be their last chance.

Karl Michael is pinning everything on this moment.

People think having a record deal means you've made it.

It doesn't.

About six months ago, I was in the studio making an album,

and then literally three days after,

the record company decided to pull out.

I went from recording in studios in New York

to cleaning windows in Earls Court.

In a matter of six months, I lost everything.

I spend the day cleaning windows, and at night,

I'm working in a bar just to have enough money to pay for my rent.

It's a horrible feeling.

It's like climbing a mountain, and as you're about to reach the top...

..you fall.

I feel like I've taken about five steps back in my life, yeah.

26, I should have a girlfriend and living in a house,

not living in a bedsit on my own.

It's not where I want to be. Yeah.

Everything's at stake for me. I've got nothing.

All I've got is my voice.

I need to prove to myself and to my family that I can do this.

It's my last shot. I don't want to fail. I'm here to win.

The reason why I turned around

is because I imagined what was going on.

I was like, "You know what, this guy's really serious.

"He needs a fighter with him."

Not just a coach, but a person

that's really going to knock down walls.

I still feel like I'm in a dream.

Like, when I was up there, I was just thinking,

"Hang on a minute, actually, all four turned!"

That was the biggest one of the day there.

Everyone was going all-in on that.

One person comes along in the series

where you really see a lot of yourself in.

It must be something to do with the troubles and the pain

that you've had in the past.

But that kid's special. Very special.

KARL: 'It seems that things happen for a reason.'

I'm going to grab this opportunity with both hands,

and I'm going to own it.

After another spectacular night of auditions,

the coaches are now even closer to their teams of 12.

Danny has secured another two artists,

bringing his total to seven.

I'm not really worried about any other team.

Everybody has a stand-out. I just happen to have more of them.

Jessie's added one artist, bringing her total to eight.

At the moment, it's make or break, so I will only push my button

if it's incredible.

With two new artists, Will's team is at seven.

-You know, I pick things like opera, folk,

things that I don't have already.

After adding one artist, Tom has also got seven.

All the coaches have strong teams, but I have the strongest!
