so surely the battles present no problems for Will.i.am.

You would think that it would be easy the third time around.

But there's new people, new passions, new dreams

and I have to send people home.

That's the hardest part.

She was on my team last season.

She's still on my team so much that I brought her on the show again.

What I can offer the acts is that the competition, it's still

really fresh to me and just the experience of being on the show.

Who would have thought that I would turn around? That's nuts.

That person I told to audition, I'm the only one turned for him.

Jermain, the soul and the depth of your voice is undeniable.

It's like it just drips.

Sarah, your vocals were so crisp and clear and really cut through.

And, for that reason, I would probably

lean towards Sarah.

Ricky, how did you find it?

Female vocals hit me emotionally more than male vocals,

but I have to say, on that one,

Jermain got me there.

What are the odds of you seeing me at a show and I say,

"Go to The Voice," and then I'm the only one

that turned around for the guy.

I think I'm supposed to see him through and one of those three

is supposed to steal you and then everybody's happy.

but it doesn't necessarily mean that it's the end of the road,

That means the other coaches can steal her for their own team.

Sarah, is there anything you'd like to say to the coaches?

I sang my butt off tonight.

I've been singing all my life, gigging for years.

I just don't want to leave this stage.

I just feel like I can do this and I'm ready for this NOW.

I was hoping one of the other coaches stole Sarah.

In Jermain, I see an old soul. Deep down in his core,

he has this Ray Charles,

Stevie Wonder vibe, and that's rare

for an 18-year-old to possess something that is of yesteryear.

-TOM:

-She could sing, that girl.

She could, but I preferred Jermain. If I steal, I'm going

to steal someone who I think was better than the other person.

Right.

So, as the dust settles on the first battle, the coaches all have

one big decision to make -

to steal, or not to steal?

So there's this thing called the steals.

The steals are back.

Which meant that the one that didn't win the battle has another

chance to be picked up by one of the other coaches.

A steal is a very handy thing.

Say, for example, I say,

"Mary Poppins, you were good, but you weren't poppin',

"so I'm going to go with Rocking Robin."

Sometimes you think, "Oh, I wish that person was on my team!"

Tom's like, "You're going to be on my team, Mary Poppins."

There's definitely people out there that I wouldn't mind poaching.

KYLIE: I've got my eye on a couple of people, actually.

So, hopefully, the coaches see the potential in folks

and give Mary Poppins a chance.

Next into battle, it's Team Kylie.

life turned upside down for 54-year-old Sally Barker.

My husband became ill with cancer.

I did try to keep singing, but it's quite difficult,

because you have to think about the kids.

And her audition moved a legend to tears.

That's what makes the difference between a good singer

and a great singer,

and that's what Sally's got, she hits me in the heart.

Next into battle is Team Ricky.

In the blinds, it's just been about the voice, but now

we're in the battles, there's this performance element that comes in.

With four smash hit albums,

three Brits and an Ivor Novello award to his name,

Kaiser Chief Ricky certainly knows a thing or two about owning the stage.

It's not just about the voice, it's about the performance

and that's where I can actually give some pretty good advice.

How you doing, guys?

And helping to get Team Ricky battle ready is his lieutenant,

singer-songwriter Katy B.

She's a great singer.

She's one of those people who's made it all happen for herself.

And she's not afraid to say what she thinks.

I just want to see someone who's got style, who's got confidence

and they just need to be themselves. That's what I love in a performance.

They've been singing with each other since they were born
