PHIL CUNNINGHAM: I was supposed to be a zoologist.

0:31:260:31:28

I had a little tussle with my school,

0:31:280:31:31

and I left school for a year to let the dust settle.

0:31:310:31:33

I joined the band for a year 35 years ago.

0:31:330:31:37

I'm very pleased! PHIL AND ANOTHER MAN LAUGH

0:31:370:31:42

I'm always surprised when somebody phones me up.

0:35:340:35:38

I'm like, "Really? Oh, great", you know?

0:35:380:35:41

So I'm still living under that illusion

0:35:410:35:43

that nobody kind of knows me.

0:35:430:35:45

It's kind of a nice place to be cos there's no expectation then.

0:35:450:35:49

And I don't really worry about it and I just hope that

0:35:490:35:53

whatever it is you do goes out

0:35:530:35:55

and, "Comes back 100-fold", they say, don't they?

# A lost summer's day a lifetime away

# Not the flash that you saw

0:36:270:36:31

# That was gone in the wink of an eye

0:36:310:36:36

# As soon as we're here we disappear

# How it came to be

0:36:530:36:56

# Each different kind accident or designed

0:36:580:37:04

# Before you and me

0:37:040:37:08

# And we ask the whole of our lives

0:37:080:37:13

# Well, maybe there's no why

# As soon as we're here we disappear

# Like dragonflies

0:37:240:37:28

# Oh, how can something so fragile

0:38:060:38:13

# Leave us helpless?

0:38:130:38:16

# We all feel helpless

0:38:160:38:21

# Once in a while

0:38:210:38:26

# How can something so fragile

0:38:260:38:32

# Leave us humble?

# We all feel humble

0:38:360:38:42

# Once in a while

0:38:420:38:47

# And all nature can sing

0:38:470:38:50

# Such beautiful wings

0:38:500:38:53

# Did you think of this?

0:38:530:38:55

# That each of us know in our hearts we must go

0:38:570:39:03

# That's what beauty is

0:39:030:39:07

# Aye, and just as the dream you were in

0:39:070:39:12

0:43:330:43:36

# As I roved out one evening

0:44:320:44:38

# Down by the Assembly Mall

0:44:380:44:45

# I heard two lovers speaking

0:44:450:44:52

# As me and my love passed on

0:44:520:44:58

# But the words that passed between them

0:44:580:45:06

# They were but very few

0:45:060:45:11

# It's not the leaving of Limerick that grieves me

0:45:110:45:18

# But, my darling, leaving you

0:45:180:45:25

# In the morning when I am going

0:45:250:45:32

# I will take you by the lily white hand

0:45:320:45:38

# And I'll wave it o'er my shoulder

0:45:380:45:45

# Saying adieu to the Limerick strand

0:45:450:45:51

# So farewell to the boys of Thomond Gate

0:45:520:45:59

# It's to them I'll bid adieu

0:45:590:46:05

# It's not the leaving of Limerick that grieves me

0:46:050:46:12

# But, my darling, leaving you

0:46:120:46:19

# And now that we must be parted

0:47:120:47:18

# I hope you will understand

0:47:180:47:25

# Why I must go broken hearted

0:47:250:47:32

# Far away from my native land

0:47:320:47:38

# Though my fond love I must leave you

0:47:380:47:45

# You know my heart is true

0:47:450:47:51

# It's not the leaving of Limerick that grieves me

0:47:510:48:00

# But, my darling, leaving you. #

0:48:000:48:09

# Same ol' river

0:48:150:48:18

# Same ol' sea

0:48:180:48:20

# Same ol' waters rushing over me... #

0:48:200:48:24

'The level of musicianship is amazing.

0:48:240:48:27

'They wrote a new melody to go with the chord changes of the song that I was singing.'

0:48:270:48:32

I would have never dreamed that could have been done in that tune.

0:48:320:48:36

One, two, three...

0:48:360:48:38

# I wish that I could be an Indian

0:48:480:48:51

# On a painted pony so fast

0:48:520:48:55

# No one could ever catch me

0:48:570:48:59

# Or get caught up in my past

0:49:010:49:04

# I'd ride across many rivers

0:49:050:49:09

# Use many moons to tell the times

0:49:090:49:12

# Then I'd tell all the young warriors

0:49:140:49:17

# Many moons ago this was mine, all mine

0:49:180:49:22

# Same ol' river

0:49:230:49:25

# Same ol' Sea

0:49:250:49:27

# Same ol' waters rushing over me

0:49:270:49:30

# Same ol' moon

0:49:320:49:34

# Same ol' sun

0:49:340:49:36

# Same ol' race that we've always run

0:49:360:49:39

# Same ol' race that we've always run

0:49:400:49:45

# Wish that I could be a slave, y'all

0:50:020:50:06

# It doesn't really matter what kind

0:50:070:50:10

# I'd sing a song for fallen angels

0:50:110:50:15

# Try and be free in my mind

0:50:160:50:20

# Then when no one was a-lookin'

0:50:200:50:24

# I'd drop my heartless plough

0:50:250:50:27

# I'd find my old contemporaries

0:50:290:50:32

# And I'd wipe the shame from their brow

0:50:330:50:38

# Same ol' river

0:50:380:50:40

# Same ol' sea

0:50:400:50:42

# Same ol' waters rushing over me

0:50:420:50:46

# Same ol' moon

0:50:460:50:48

# Same ol' sun

0:50:490:50:51

# Same ol' race that we've always run

0:50:510:50:54

# Same ol' race that we've always run

0:50:560:51:00

# I wish that I could be an outlaw

0:51:170:51:20

# Runnin' from the laws of times

0:51:210:51:25

# No vigilante against the seasons

0:51:270:51:29

# But I can't help but read why

0:51:310:51:33

# I'd always keep my revolver

0:51:350:51:38

# Steady and fast at my side

0:51:390:51:42

# And I'd rob a train bound for glory

0:51:440:51:46

# Cos I thought I needed a ride

0:51:480:51:53

# Same ol' river

0:51:530:51:55

# Same ol' sea

0:51:550:51:56

# Same ol' waters rushing over me

0:51:560:52:01

# Same ol' moon

0:52:020:52:03

# Same ol' sun

0:52:030:52:06

# Same ol' race that we've always run

0:52:060:52:09

# Same ol' race that we've always run

0:52:100:52:13

# So many things I ain't ever done. #

0:52:140:52:18

You got kind of a smorgasbord of musicians to pick from.

0:52:430:52:47

You know, so you get to come in...

0:52:470:52:50

Child in a sweetie shop, isn't it?

0:52:500:52:52

You wouldn't know who to pick.

0:52:520:52:55

I know. Well, everybody usually picks everybody

0:52:550:52:57

-and I have to go, well, no we can't.

-I did that, too.

-Yeah?

0:52:570:53:00

The best of Nashville, Ireland and Scotland in a format that affords a unique insight into the sheer joy of making music. Recorded in an old hunting lodge at Glen Lyon near Aberfeldy in the Perthshire Highlands, top vocal and instrumental exponents of the country and Celtic traditions gather to rehearse and play together with no audience except themselves and a resident house band.

Music co-directors are Nashville's Jerry Douglas and Shetland's Aly Bain and artists include Phil Cunningham, Donal Lunny, Mike McGoldrick, Danny Thompson, Donald Shaw, John Doyle, John McCusker, James Mackintosh, Eddi Reader, Muireann Nic Amhlaoidh, Bela Fleck, Sam Bush, Nollaig Casey, Sharon Shannon, Jim Murray, Kathleen MacInnes, Eric Bibb and Dirk Powell.

Leavening the intimacy of the music-making is a strong element of Highland scenic photography, while a greater emphasis on informal backstage conversations and stories serves to highlight the series' historic qualities of collaboration and performance.
