You're watching Beyond 100 Days. | 0:00:09 | 0:00:11
Trump takes over Davos. | 0:00:11 | 0:00:13
The populist president meets
the global elite and promises | 0:00:13 | 0:00:16
peace and prosperity. | 0:00:16 | 0:00:21
They might now like what he says
and how he says it but business | 0:00:21 | 0:00:25
leaders are very happy
with his economic policies. | 0:00:25 | 0:00:27
Mr Trump gives the Prime Minister
a boost anticipating a tremendous | 0:00:27 | 0:00:29
increase in trade between the UK
and the US after Brexit | 0:00:29 | 0:00:35
He warns that US aid could be taken
away from the Palestinians | 0:00:35 | 0:00:38
if they aren't prepared to negotiate
a peace deal. | 0:00:38 | 0:00:42
He has famously sparred
with the White House | 0:00:42 | 0:00:46
but Republican Senator Bob Corker
credits the president | 0:00:46 | 0:00:49
for the economy and tells me what he
wants to hear from Donald Trump. | 0:00:49 | 0:00:54
I hope that when he comes
and speaks tomorrow, | 0:00:54 | 0:00:59
that he does so in a manner
to re-establish, or at least build | 0:00:59 | 0:01:03
back some of the trust
that our nation has had. | 0:01:03 | 0:01:09
Also on the programme: | 0:01:09 | 0:01:12
The President says he will sit down
with Robert Mueller under oath. | 0:01:12 | 0:01:15
But once again questions
the integrity of the FBI. | 0:01:15 | 0:01:19
And Davos is one of the most
expensive places to be | 0:01:19 | 0:01:22
in the world right now,
we'll look at what's it's | 0:01:22 | 0:01:24
like if you're not one
of the global elite's | 0:01:24 | 0:01:26
Get in touch with us
using the hashtag | 0:01:26 | 0:01:28
'Beyond-One-Hundred-Days' | 0:01:28 | 0:01:38
Hello and welcome. | 0:01:38 | 0:01:39
I'm Katty Kay in Davos
and Christian Fraser is in London. | 0:01:39 | 0:01:42
Donald Trump has
taken Davos by storm. | 0:01:42 | 0:01:44
You might think that the global
crowd gathered in Switzerland has | 0:01:44 | 0:01:47
nothing but antipathy for the US
President. | 0:01:47 | 0:01:49
Well think again. | 0:01:49 | 0:01:52
International business leaders
gathered here may mutter | 0:01:52 | 0:01:55
in disapproval at Mr Trump's tone
but they are very happy | 0:01:55 | 0:01:58
with the economic boom fueled
by his tax cuts and deregulation. | 0:01:58 | 0:02:02
It's a strange paradox
and one the disruptor | 0:02:02 | 0:02:08
in chief may well relish. | 0:02:08 | 0:02:09
Administration officials
say they are heartened | 0:02:09 | 0:02:11
that the reception at
the World Economic Forum has been | 0:02:11 | 0:02:13
as positive as it has been. | 0:02:13 | 0:02:15
So now the question is does the US
President reach out a hand of global | 0:02:15 | 0:02:19
friendship in his speech tomorrow
or a stern reminder that he's | 0:02:19 | 0:02:22
putting America first. | 0:02:22 | 0:02:25
I've been speaking to Republican
Senator Bob Corker, chairman | 0:02:25 | 0:02:29
of the Foreign Relations Committee,
who's been critical | 0:02:29 | 0:02:31
of the President's behaviour
suggesting he needs supervision. | 0:02:31 | 0:02:34
I asked him if he thinks
Donald Trump is doing a good | 0:02:34 | 0:02:38
job on the world stage. | 0:02:38 | 0:02:44
I think from the very beginning,
I have criticised things I thought | 0:02:44 | 0:02:47
needed to be criticised. | 0:02:47 | 0:02:49
But I have also applauded those
things that needed to be applauded | 0:02:49 | 0:02:53
and you and I were just talking
before we came on here, | 0:02:53 | 0:02:56
the economic situation around
the world is very different | 0:02:56 | 0:03:00
than what people thought at this
time and I think what he has done | 0:03:00 | 0:03:05
in our country is release
the animal spirits. | 0:03:05 | 0:03:09
I don't think there is any question,
with the deregulation, | 0:03:09 | 0:03:13
tax reform that's taken place,
it's not only affecting us, | 0:03:13 | 0:03:15
but it's affecting other
countries that trade with us, | 0:03:15 | 0:03:17
which is most of them. | 0:03:18 | 0:03:19
So I think again, support those
things you think are good | 0:03:19 | 0:03:22
for the country and the world
and sometimes, some of the comments | 0:03:22 | 0:03:25
I wish were made in a different way. | 0:03:25 | 0:03:32
All the things you deal
with from a national | 0:03:32 | 0:03:34
security point of view,
whether it is North Korea | 0:03:34 | 0:03:36
or the Middle East, Russia or China,
all of those in security still exist | 0:03:36 | 0:03:44
insecurities still exist | 0:03:44 | 0:03:45
in the world. | 0:03:45 | 0:03:46
You've accused the president
of inching the world | 0:03:46 | 0:03:48
towards World War III,
has that gone away now? | 0:03:48 | 0:03:50
It seems to me that we are
moderating some of our policies | 0:03:50 | 0:03:53
and I think understanding
what our role in the world is. | 0:03:53 | 0:03:56
We will continue to press for that. | 0:03:56 | 0:03:57
But again, I think when you have
this, this incredible growth | 0:03:57 | 0:04:00
that's taking place,
you should applaud that. | 0:04:00 | 0:04:02
Yet, you are right, we still have
all these intractable issues. | 0:04:02 | 0:04:04
I've been on panels this
week relative to Russia, | 0:04:04 | 0:04:06
relative to China's growth. | 0:04:06 | 0:04:08
We still have tremendous issues
to deal with in the nation. | 0:04:08 | 0:04:11
OK, let's talk about China
and North Korea, because of course | 0:04:11 | 0:04:15
the president came here
and announced sanctions against some | 0:04:15 | 0:04:18
South Korean, tariffs on some
South Korean products. | 0:04:18 | 0:04:24
Is this a wise time to be doing
things that might alienate a key | 0:04:24 | 0:04:28
ally when it comes to dealing
with North Korea? | 0:04:28 | 0:04:31
Well, at one point they were
looking at moving out | 0:04:31 | 0:04:35
of the South Korean trade agreement. | 0:04:35 | 0:04:40
So I think what has happened has
ended up being far smaller | 0:04:40 | 0:04:43
than what people expected. | 0:04:43 | 0:04:46
But why do anything to alienate
South Korea at this particular | 0:04:46 | 0:04:49
junction when things are so fragile
with North Korea? | 0:04:49 | 0:04:59
I think that again, he is following
through on the things | 0:05:05 | 0:05:08
he said he would do, | 0:05:08 | 0:05:09
but not in the sort of manner
that is as punishing | 0:05:09 | 0:05:11
as people had once thought. | 0:05:12 | 0:05:13
I am glad of that, the pushback
against the solar panels was really | 0:05:13 | 0:05:16
not as bad as it could have been. | 0:05:16 | 0:05:18
So look, he's demonstrating,
or at least attempting | 0:05:18 | 0:05:20
to demonstrate he will pushback
on inequalities and trade, | 0:05:20 | 0:05:22
but at the same time,
we haven't seen the things that can | 0:05:22 | 0:05:25
so many people that are here,
just wanting to do away | 0:05:25 | 0:05:27
with trade agreements. | 0:05:27 | 0:05:28
The other issue I hear concern
about from European diplomats | 0:05:28 | 0:05:31
and I'm sure you hear it
when you speak to Europeans | 0:05:31 | 0:05:34
is the issue of Iran
and a sense of unpredictability | 0:05:34 | 0:05:36
about the administration. | 0:05:36 | 0:05:38
We lurch from deadline to deadline
and it's only 24 hours before | 0:05:38 | 0:05:41
the next deadline that we know
what the White House | 0:05:41 | 0:05:43
is going to do in terms
of recertifying the Iran deal, | 0:05:43 | 0:05:46
or continuing the
waiver on sanctions. | 0:05:46 | 0:05:47
Does that lack of clarity hamper
the long-term future | 0:05:47 | 0:05:50
of the Iran nuclear deal? | 0:05:50 | 0:05:55
The concern people have
about what he's actually going to do | 0:05:55 | 0:06:02
has actually stimulated discussions,
that otherwise would not have taken | 0:06:02 | 0:06:05
place if they knew he was not
going to do anything relative | 0:06:05 | 0:06:08
to the agreement, he was
going to do it in place. | 0:06:08 | 0:06:11
We wouldn't be having
the conversations we are having. | 0:06:11 | 0:06:13
On the other hand, no doubt you have
seen the trust factor around | 0:06:13 | 0:06:16
the world and the view
of the United States. | 0:06:16 | 0:06:19
No doubt many of the statements
that have been made, | 0:06:19 | 0:06:21
some of the actions,
many of the actions have | 0:06:21 | 0:06:24
caused people to wonder
whether we are liable allies, | 0:06:24 | 0:06:34
a reliable friend. | 0:06:34 | 0:06:37
I hope that when he comes and speaks
tomorrow that he does so in a manner | 0:06:37 | 0:06:41
to re-establish or at least build
back some of the trust | 0:06:41 | 0:06:43
that our nation has had. | 0:06:44 | 0:06:45
The most critical thing you have
said about this president is a tweet | 0:06:45 | 0:06:48
you sent out famously in October
in which you called the White House | 0:06:48 | 0:06:52
an adult daycare centre
and that it was lacking adult | 0:06:52 | 0:06:55
supervision, somebody had
missed their shift. | 0:06:55 | 0:06:56
Do you stand by that tweet? | 0:06:56 | 0:07:00
Look, I say what is on my mind
at the time and you know, | 0:07:00 | 0:07:03
I do so with thoughtfulness
when I do it. | 0:07:03 | 0:07:05
I have moved on, we have
continued to work with them. | 0:07:05 | 0:07:08
We work every day actually,
with the administration trying | 0:07:08 | 0:07:10
to make sure good policies
are put in place. | 0:07:10 | 0:07:12
I will say that the administration
has a top-notch group of people | 0:07:12 | 0:07:15
involved in foreign policy that
I have tremendous amounts of respect | 0:07:15 | 0:07:20
for and we work with them nonstop
to try to ensure the policies that | 0:07:20 | 0:07:23
are put forward are
good for the nation. | 0:07:23 | 0:07:26
What about the president himself,
do you still believe | 0:07:26 | 0:07:29
he need adult supervision? | 0:07:29 | 0:07:34
he needs adult supervision? | 0:07:34 | 0:07:37
The president is an unusual person
in that all of those people who work | 0:07:37 | 0:07:40
around him really don't know
what the outcome is going to be, | 0:07:40 | 0:07:43
the decision is going to be. | 0:07:43 | 0:07:47
So they will work for months
sometimes, sometimes it's weeks, | 0:07:47 | 0:07:49
to try and shape a policy point. | 0:07:49 | 0:07:54
You know, it is an unusual decision
process that takes place. | 0:07:54 | 0:07:58
But it is where we are and let's
face it, again on the economic | 0:07:58 | 0:08:01
peice, on the deregulation piece,
a lot of good things have | 0:08:01 | 0:08:05
happened as a result of it. | 0:08:05 | 0:08:14
Another straight shooter? Yes, being
careful to say things have got | 0:08:14 | 0:08:20
better, we have moved | 0:08:20 | 0:08:21
careful to say things have got
better, we have moved on in the | 0:08:21 | 0:08:22
relationship. It did get bad when he
sent out the tweet about the White | 0:08:22 | 0:08:25
House being an adult daycare centre.
But Senator Bob Corker like the | 0:08:25 | 0:08:32
leaders gathered here in Davos
realise they have to deal with the | 0:08:32 | 0:08:35
United States and deal with this
very unusual presidency. Watching | 0:08:35 | 0:08:39
world leaders here this week as
President Trump comes in and takes | 0:08:39 | 0:08:45
over the show in Davos. For all we
talk about America retreating, it is | 0:08:45 | 0:08:51
a reminder that the White House,
President Trump, the United States | 0:08:51 | 0:08:55
of America, when it wants to can
throw its weight around and make its | 0:08:55 | 0:08:59
presence felt and that is what he is
doing in Davos at the moment. | 0:08:59 | 0:09:03
Through the cause of the day I have
seen him waving, smiling and talking | 0:09:03 | 0:09:08
about peace and prosperity. This is
the global elite he bashed up in the | 0:09:08 | 0:09:13
campaign? I bet if you polled them
on a personal level and speak to | 0:09:13 | 0:09:21
business leaders, they aren't
impressed with some of the things | 0:09:21 | 0:09:25
the president stands for, his
policies on immigration and he does | 0:09:25 | 0:09:28
talk about imposing more tariffs and
he is disrupting the free trade | 0:09:28 | 0:09:33
order. Some of the things he says,
the way he has talked about African | 0:09:33 | 0:09:37
nations in the last few weeks. They
don't like any of that, but they do | 0:09:37 | 0:09:41
like the economy and be revelling in
the fact they are doing so well. | 0:09:41 | 0:09:45
There is a schizophrenic reaction to
Donald Trump in Davos. Some | 0:09:45 | 0:09:50
officials a couple of hours ago said
we are happy with the way things are | 0:09:50 | 0:09:59
going. BATE are the biggest show in
town. They have been making | 0:09:59 | 0:10:05
headlines already. | 0:10:05 | 0:10:07
President Trump has been meeting
today with the Israeli Prime | 0:10:07 | 0:10:10
Minister Benjamin Netenyahu. | 0:10:10 | 0:10:11
And during that meeting he
questioned whether the peace talks | 0:10:11 | 0:10:13
with the Palestinians can resume. | 0:10:13 | 0:10:16
When they disrespected us a week ago
by not allowing our vice president | 0:10:16 | 0:10:21
to see them and we give them
hundreds and millions of dollars in | 0:10:21 | 0:10:25
aid and support, tremendous numbers.
Numbers that liberty understands. | 0:10:25 | 0:10:30
That money is on the table and that
money is not going to them unless | 0:10:30 | 0:10:34
they sit down and negotiate peace.
Because I can tell you that Israel | 0:10:34 | 0:10:39
does want to make peace and they
have to want to make peace or we | 0:10:39 | 0:10:43
will have nothing to do with it any
longer. | 0:10:43 | 0:10:47
Our diplomatic correspondent
James Landale is here with us now. | 0:10:47 | 0:10:52
This is Donald Trump the businessmen
rather than Donald Trump the | 0:10:52 | 0:10:55
diplomat? Yes, he thinks he is
involved in something like a | 0:10:55 | 0:11:02
business deal and you can threaten
the withholding of money, UN money | 0:11:02 | 0:11:08
that does a lot of work for the
Palestinians. His aim is to say, we | 0:11:08 | 0:11:14
want you to consider peace talks, as
he calls them, by threatening to | 0:11:14 | 0:11:18
withhold the money. At the moment,
the Palestinians are not playing | 0:11:18 | 0:11:21
ball. There is an outright refusal
to agree to this. They are saying as | 0:11:21 | 0:11:29
a result of this, these threats,
Donald Trump to recognise Jerusalem | 0:11:29 | 0:11:36
as the capital, they don't see the
US as they have in the past. He is | 0:11:36 | 0:11:42
saying Jerusalem is off the table
and president about as saying if | 0:11:42 | 0:11:47
Jerusalem is off the table than
America is off the table as the | 0:11:47 | 0:11:53
negotiator?
>> guest-macro: The Palestinians | 0:11:53 | 0:12:02
don't accept that. Everyone is
waiting on the great new | 0:12:02 | 0:12:07
announcement that the White House we
think are going to make potentially | 0:12:07 | 0:12:10
sometime this year, which is their
plans for the middle east issue. | 0:12:10 | 0:12:18
Jared Kushner, the President's
son-in-law is working on that. But | 0:12:18 | 0:12:22
when you ask where are they going,
where are they heading? You don't | 0:12:22 | 0:12:26
get much detail. James Ireland the
stand you are a genius and you | 0:12:26 | 0:12:32
arrived in the studio and you would
be talking about the special | 0:12:32 | 0:12:38
relationship, so how much when you
speak to European allies, do you | 0:12:38 | 0:12:43
hear that the issue of Jerusalem is
causing disquiet amongst them and | 0:12:43 | 0:12:48
the decision to recognise Jerusalem
as the capital of Israel or have | 0:12:48 | 0:12:52
they decided it is something
President Trump always said he was | 0:12:52 | 0:12:55
going to do and we will have to live
with it? On one level, they factored | 0:12:55 | 0:13:01
it in because they were expecting it
at some stage. Some of them, when | 0:13:01 | 0:13:06
they talk to European leaders and
politicians, they are relieved the | 0:13:06 | 0:13:10
scale of potential violence and
disruption it could have caused in | 0:13:10 | 0:13:13
the region as a result of that
announcement has been quite muted. | 0:13:13 | 0:13:17
There hasn't been the potential
outrage and it hasn't been matched | 0:13:17 | 0:13:21
by any physical response. I think
their concern is this, is that the | 0:13:21 | 0:13:29
wider shift of President Trump
saying we will support the Israelis | 0:13:29 | 0:13:32
on Israel. President Trump saying we
will support the Saudi Arabians in | 0:13:32 | 0:13:36
putting more pressure on Iran.
Particularly the threat still | 0:13:36 | 0:13:41
outstanding of whether or not the
United States will give up its | 0:13:41 | 0:13:44
support for the Iran nuclear deal.
That is something that is at the | 0:13:44 | 0:13:49
heart of a lot of policymakers,
their concerns within Europe. They | 0:13:49 | 0:13:54
are thinking long and hard about
what impact that will have in the | 0:13:54 | 0:13:58
long term. You see come he just
moved seamlessly from the special | 0:13:58 | 0:14:03
relationship into Israeli,
Palestinian policies. James | 0:14:03 | 0:14:08
Langdale, thank you. | 0:14:08 | 0:14:11
President Trump also met of course
with the British Prime | 0:14:11 | 0:14:13
Minister, Theresa May. | 0:14:13 | 0:14:14
The first time the two have met
since Mrs May criticised him | 0:14:14 | 0:14:17
for retweeting those videos posted
by the far right | 0:14:17 | 0:14:19
group Britain First. | 0:14:19 | 0:14:20
President Trump has cancelled
a scheduled visit to London | 0:14:20 | 0:14:23
to open the new US Embassy. | 0:14:23 | 0:14:25
But today Mr Trump promised
a "tremendous increase" in trade | 0:14:25 | 0:14:27
between the US and Britain. | 0:14:27 | 0:14:29
Mrs May said the meeting reaffirmed
the special relationship | 0:14:29 | 0:14:31
between the two countries. | 0:14:31 | 0:14:33
She is under pressure to prove that
Britain will benefit from new trade | 0:14:33 | 0:14:36
deals when it leaves the EU. | 0:14:36 | 0:14:44
We have had great discussion today
and there is a special relationship | 0:14:44 | 0:14:51
between the UK and the United
States, standings 's shoulder to | 0:14:51 | 0:14:57
shoulder against the challenges
across the world. Alongside back, | 0:14:57 | 0:15:02
working for a good trade
relationship in the future which | 0:15:02 | 0:15:06
will benefit both of us. So the UK
and the US both do well out of this | 0:15:06 | 0:15:10
and it has been great to see each
other. It is great to see you. One | 0:15:10 | 0:15:15
thing that will be taking place over
a number of years is trade, trade | 0:15:15 | 0:15:21
will increase many times and we look
forward to that. The trade concept | 0:15:21 | 0:15:25
and discussions, they will be taking
place and they are going to lead to | 0:15:25 | 0:15:34
tremendous increases in trade
between our two countries. Which is | 0:15:34 | 0:15:38
great for both in terms of jobs and
we look forward to that. We are | 0:15:38 | 0:15:43
starting the process pretty much as
we speak. Thank you all very much | 0:15:43 | 0:15:47
for being here. Thank you. | 0:15:47 | 0:15:53
The president has just treated
saying he has had a productive | 0:15:53 | 0:15:55
meeting with the Prime Minister.
Laura Kuennsburg says, Theresa May | 0:15:55 | 0:16:01
trying to get as many words in as
she can be for Trump speaks after | 0:16:01 | 0:16:07
stories that he does all the
talking. I know you are the expert | 0:16:07 | 0:16:11
on body language, what did you think
about that? She cut away, and it | 0:16:11 | 0:16:18
looks like he squeezed her hand to
type, but he does that with | 0:16:18 | 0:16:21
everybody so he cannot read too much
into that. Look at that handshake | 0:16:21 | 0:16:28
with President Macron, it went on
for ever and ever. | 0:16:28 | 0:16:32
I did ask if the UK would be let off
some of the stringent requirements | 0:16:32 | 0:16:37
there might be in a trade deal, how
long was going to take? I was met | 0:16:37 | 0:16:42
with a certain amount of scepticism
and told they will have to stick to | 0:16:42 | 0:16:45
the rules and it will take some
time. BATE are saying in the last | 0:16:45 | 0:16:50
few minutes, the visit of Donald
Trump will be back on in the second | 0:16:50 | 0:16:53
half of the year but they are not
saying if it is a state visit. Let's | 0:16:53 | 0:16:58
look at some of the other news. | 0:16:58 | 0:17:01
The president of Michigan State
University has resigned over | 0:17:01 | 0:17:04
the scandal surrounding years
of abuse by the former USA | 0:17:04 | 0:17:06
Gymnastics team doctor Larry Nassar. | 0:17:06 | 0:17:07
Nassar, who used to work
at the university, has just been | 0:17:07 | 0:17:10
sentenced to 175 years in prison
for sexually molesting | 0:17:10 | 0:17:12
young athletes. | 0:17:12 | 0:17:14
The new leader of South Africa's
governing African National Congress | 0:17:14 | 0:17:16
party, Cyril Ramaphosa,
has told the BBC that | 0:17:16 | 0:17:19
the country has been badly
affected by corruption. | 0:17:19 | 0:17:22
He said the state had been
captured, as he put it, | 0:17:22 | 0:17:25
by people purporting to be close
to President Jacob Zuma. | 0:17:25 | 0:17:28
He said allegations
against the president | 0:17:28 | 0:17:30
and others were being handled
by a judicial inquiry. | 0:17:30 | 0:17:35
Hindu hardliners have ransacked
shops, burnt vehicles and clashed | 0:17:35 | 0:17:37
with police in parts of northern
India during protests | 0:17:37 | 0:17:41
against a Bollywood
film."Padmaavat" is a period drama | 0:17:41 | 0:17:43
about a relationship between a Hindu
queen and a Muslim ruler. | 0:17:43 | 0:17:46
Hindu extremist groups say
the film distorts history. | 0:17:46 | 0:17:56
Before leaving for Davos
the President gave an impromptu | 0:17:56 | 0:17:58
press conference to White House
reporters, in which he said | 0:17:58 | 0:18:00
he was willing and eager to be
interviewed by Robert Mueller | 0:18:00 | 0:18:03
the special counsel under oath. | 0:18:03 | 0:18:13
I am looking forward to it. There
has been no collusion whatsoever, | 0:18:13 | 0:18:19
there is no obstruction whatsoever
and I am looking forward to it. | 0:18:19 | 0:18:23
The President is convinced
the Russia investigation | 0:18:23 | 0:18:26
is a political witch-hunt
to undermine his election victory. | 0:18:26 | 0:18:28
And his anger is fuelled
by the allegations and conspiracy | 0:18:28 | 0:18:34
theories that are
swirling around the FBI. | 0:18:34 | 0:18:36
The latest drama involves | 0:18:36 | 0:18:37
a secret four page memo that has
been written by the chairman | 0:18:37 | 0:18:40
of the House Intelligence
Committee, Devin Nunes. | 0:18:40 | 0:18:42
We still don't know what's in that
memo because the House intelligence | 0:18:42 | 0:18:44
committee won't release it,
not even to the FBI | 0:18:44 | 0:18:47
or the Justice Department. | 0:18:47 | 0:18:48
But senior Republicans have seen it
and are commenting on it publicly. | 0:18:48 | 0:18:51
The baseline allegation appears
to be that the Obama administration | 0:18:51 | 0:18:53
approved secret surveillance
to target members of the Trump | 0:18:53 | 0:18:57
campaign and that this
Russia investigation | 0:18:57 | 0:18:59
is politically motivated. | 0:18:59 | 0:19:04
The Republicans have also have
seized on an anti-Trump text message | 0:19:04 | 0:19:08
referencing a "secret society" that
an FBI lawyer, Lisa Page, | 0:19:08 | 0:19:12
sent to senior FBI agent
Peter Strzok, who was working | 0:19:12 | 0:19:16
on the Russia investigation... | 0:19:16 | 0:19:19
"Are you even going to give
out your calendars?" | 0:19:19 | 0:19:22
She wrote. | 0:19:22 | 0:19:23
"Seems kind of depressing. | 0:19:23 | 0:19:25
Maybe it should just be the first
meeting of the secret society." | 0:19:25 | 0:19:28
It later emerged that further texts
Strzok and Page exchanged | 0:19:28 | 0:19:31
between December and May last
year, had disappeared. | 0:19:31 | 0:19:34
The FBI had blamed
a programming glitch. | 0:19:34 | 0:19:38
But the President last night
compared it to Watergate | 0:19:38 | 0:19:42
and the 18.5 minute gap in a crucial
tape, deleted by Nixon's then | 0:19:42 | 0:19:46
secretary Rosemary Woods. | 0:19:46 | 0:19:56
I am very disturbed, as is the
general, as is everybody else who is | 0:19:56 | 0:20:01
intelligent. When you look at five
months, this is the great Rosemary | 0:20:01 | 0:20:08
Woods, right? This is a large-scale
version. That was 18 minutes, this | 0:20:08 | 0:20:15
is five. They say it is 50,000 text
messages and it is prime time. That | 0:20:15 | 0:20:20
is disturbing. This isn't the first
time the president has made | 0:20:20 | 0:20:30
comparisons with Watergate. | 0:20:30 | 0:20:31
However, in the last hour
the Justice Department Inspector | 0:20:31 | 0:20:34
General said his office has
"succeeded in using forensic tools | 0:20:34 | 0:20:38
to recover text messages
from FBI devices". | 0:20:38 | 0:20:39
I have been putting some | 0:20:39 | 0:20:41
of this story to the
Virginia Democrat Don Beyer | 0:20:41 | 0:20:43
The president said he is eager to
sit down with Robert Mueller and the | 0:20:43 | 0:20:53
investigation, is this nearing the
end? Is it leading somewhere? It is | 0:20:53 | 0:20:57
leading somewhere. Whitewater went
on for ever and Benghazi, which was | 0:20:57 | 0:21:04
about nothing, went on for years. I
think Mueller will act more quickly. | 0:21:04 | 0:21:09
He doesn't have a political agenda.
I think what most Americans want is | 0:21:09 | 0:21:14
just for the truth to come out,
whatever it is. What do you make of | 0:21:14 | 0:21:19
the criticism of the FBI at the
moment and it seems to have heated | 0:21:19 | 0:21:22
up in the last few days that the FBI
is bias, there is some kind of | 0:21:22 | 0:21:26
secret society in the Federal bureau
of investigation, which is trying to | 0:21:26 | 0:21:33
undermine the president? Ridiculous.
The FBI are famous for their | 0:21:33 | 0:21:40
professionalism and we often see
them as very conservative and much | 0:21:40 | 0:21:44
more Republican leaning. If anything
they will be leaning towards | 0:21:44 | 0:21:49
protecting the president. They have
a deep commitment to uncovering what | 0:21:49 | 0:21:52
the truth is because that is their
responsibility. Missing text | 0:21:52 | 0:21:56
messages about when we are going to
dinner is silly. Where does this | 0:21:56 | 0:22:02
come from why would groups want to
criticise the FBI like this, where | 0:22:02 | 0:22:07
is it leading? If there is illegal
and improper and Donald Trump's | 0:22:07 | 0:22:13
behaviour, one of the things that
comes up again, what is the source | 0:22:13 | 0:22:17
of his money for his real estate,
what does that do to connect Russia? | 0:22:17 | 0:22:21
I don't know. So I think they want
to undermine the FBI's credibility | 0:22:21 | 0:22:28
now before it comes out. You think
it is about the integrity of the | 0:22:28 | 0:22:32
Russian investigation not about the
integrity of the FBI itself? It is | 0:22:32 | 0:22:38
harder to attack the Russian
investigation, although they do it | 0:22:38 | 0:22:42
pretty good, but if you can
undermine the FBI, you try to make | 0:22:42 | 0:22:46
the problem go away. Are you
surprised how positive European | 0:22:46 | 0:22:50
business leaders are about the state
of the world economy and how much | 0:22:50 | 0:22:54
credit they will give Donald Trump
and are prepared to give Donald | 0:22:54 | 0:22:58
Trump? I think the reaction Donald
Trump is getting here is not what | 0:22:58 | 0:23:02
you might expect from the so-called
global elite? The US is essentially | 0:23:02 | 0:23:09
at full employment we have all these
years in a row of positive growth. | 0:23:09 | 0:23:12
But the rest of the world is growing
as well. He put that with | 0:23:12 | 0:23:20
significant tax decreases the public
corporations and people are feeling | 0:23:20 | 0:23:22
good about the future. Donald Trump
can do a deserved victory lap, is | 0:23:22 | 0:23:27
that what you're saying? They will
get the blame, they will get the | 0:23:27 | 0:23:31
credit. I'd prefer to look at how
Obama inherited an economy in 2009 | 0:23:31 | 0:23:36
and headed to 15% unemployment and
then we went to remarkable growth, | 0:23:36 | 0:23:45
which is sustained so
congratulations to Donald Trump | 0:23:45 | 0:23:51
keeping it growing. What is your
reputation with Donald Trump with | 0:23:51 | 0:23:56
these people tomorrow? His speech is
important, it is synonymous with | 0:23:56 | 0:24:03
Douglas. We are working together on
poverty, hunger and the fourth | 0:24:03 | 0:24:08
industrial revolution. All the
things not part of the Trump agenda. | 0:24:08 | 0:24:11
We will see how he aligns those put
them together tomorrow. Thank you | 0:24:11 | 0:24:15
for joining me. | 0:24:15 | 0:24:23
Somebody has overlooked night
invitation to join the global elite. | 0:24:23 | 0:24:31
Some have to be left behind. I have
devised a little quiz and I want | 0:24:31 | 0:24:38
answers to where you fit in the
Davos hierarchy. Did you arrive by | 0:24:38 | 0:24:45
car, train or helicopter? Car. OK,
does your accommodation look like | 0:24:45 | 0:24:50
this? Yes, absolutely that is where
I am staying in a large suite and | 0:24:50 | 0:24:57
thank you so much for the offer of
paying the bill, it is on the way to | 0:24:57 | 0:25:01
you. That is on the 100 days charge
codes. What list of party were you | 0:25:01 | 0:25:10
at last night? I wasn't at any, I
spent most of the time trying to | 0:25:10 | 0:25:14
stuff myself with medicine, which is
why I am wearing a woolly hat and | 0:25:14 | 0:25:19
apparently I look like a bank
robber. I was in the infirmary. You | 0:25:19 | 0:25:27
are more Detroit than Davos. What
are you wearing on your feet, snow | 0:25:27 | 0:25:32
boots like the Prime Minister or
throwaway crampons? Wet socks. She | 0:25:32 | 0:25:40
will be happy because she will say
get your dry shoes on especially | 0:25:40 | 0:25:44
when you have a cold. You're no
good, I am next year. | 0:25:44 | 0:25:52
This is Beyond 100
Days from the BBC. | 0:25:52 | 0:25:54
Coming up for viewers
on the BBC News Channel | 0:25:54 | 0:25:56
and BBC World News... | 0:25:56 | 0:25:58
We get the view of Goldman Sach's. | 0:25:58 | 0:26:04
Good evening. Early on we have most
of the showers in the West and the | 0:26:11 | 0:26:14
sunny skies in the east. Though
showers are moving their way | 0:26:14 | 0:26:17
eastwards now. Particularly across
England and Wales. Maybe if you have | 0:26:17 | 0:26:22
the one to begin with but they do
become fewer, the showers and they | 0:26:22 | 0:26:26
become lighter but we are left with
a residue of cloud across England | 0:26:26 | 0:26:30
and Wales. This should keep
temperatures. Different story in | 0:26:30 | 0:26:34
Scotland and Northern Ireland. Winds
will be lights are likely to be a | 0:26:34 | 0:26:37
touch of frost. Could be icy patches
around Scotland in particular. | 0:26:37 | 0:26:42
Possibly Northern Ireland, although
more likely to have fog around here | 0:26:42 | 0:26:44
early on Friday. Eventually as the
cloud breaks at the end of the | 0:26:44 | 0:26:49
nights of the start of the morning,
we could see the temperatures | 0:26:49 | 0:26:51
dipping in the north-west of England
and West Wales. As we had to the | 0:26:51 | 0:26:56
Midlands East Anglia and the
south-east of England, it is a | 0:26:56 | 0:26:58
cloudy start and there will be like
showers, one or two showers clipping | 0:26:58 | 0:27:02
Pembrokeshire and perhaps into
Cornwall. Otherwise we should see a | 0:27:02 | 0:27:09
dry day with good spells of
sunshine. We'll use the fog in | 0:27:09 | 0:27:13
Northern Ireland in the morning. The
cloud is stubborn across the | 0:27:13 | 0:27:16
south-east of the UK, it does break
up eventually, any showers will fade | 0:27:16 | 0:27:21
away and temperatures will probably
be around six, 9 degrees. A fine day | 0:27:21 | 0:27:26
ahead of rain coming into the
north-west later on. The weather | 0:27:26 | 0:27:29
front will be weakening as it runs
eastwards, barging into the back of | 0:27:29 | 0:27:32
it we have a deepening area of low
pressure strengthening the winds and | 0:27:32 | 0:27:36
the warm front, the weather front
will bring more persistent rain | 0:27:36 | 0:27:39
early on in the day. As the rain
pushes its way eastwards, the rain | 0:27:39 | 0:27:44
becomes lighter and more party. Will
Beer windy day with sunshine across | 0:27:44 | 0:27:48
northern and western areas. We dig
up the winds in the north-west of | 0:27:48 | 0:27:51
Scotland. We are drawing in mother
air, temperatures on Saturday will | 0:27:51 | 0:27:54
be higher than they will be on
Friday. There's Tebbit is likely to | 0:27:54 | 0:27:59
continue to climb during the second
half of the weekend. Slightly cooler | 0:27:59 | 0:28:03
air across the far north of
Scotland. It will be windy overnight | 0:28:03 | 0:28:08
and into Sunday, gales transferring
their way for a while towards the | 0:28:08 | 0:28:15
Northern Isles. Rain across
Scotland, particularly over the | 0:28:15 | 0:28:16
hills and perhaps England and Wales.
The third east you are and the | 0:28:16 | 0:28:19
shelter from the high ground, we
could get some sunshine. Windy | 0:28:19 | 0:28:23
weekend, it will be a mild one as
well and as we head into the | 0:28:23 | 0:28:27
beginning of next week, temperatures
will be little lower. | 0:28:27 | 0:28:31

He loves Theresa May and Britain,
and expect a tremendous increase in | 0:30:28 | 0:30:32
trade between America and Great
Britain. And | 0:30:32 | 0:30:41
trade between America and Great
Britain. And coming up in the next | 0:30:41 | 0:30:43
half-hour. Swiss scientists solve
the mystery of a mummified woman, | 0:30:43 | 0:30:51
and it turns out that she is a
distant relative of one of the UK's | 0:30:51 | 0:30:54
best-known politicians. | 0:30:54 | 0:31:00
Let us know your thoughts

Taking a stand as the US did the
other day on washing machines and | 0:31:13 | 0:31:17
solar panels, he said, should not be
considered protectionist. Their | 0:31:17 | 0:31:24
trade is part of the debate that is
going on here at Davos, but what | 0:31:24 | 0:31:27
exactly is it, and how does the
world redistribute the wealth that | 0:31:27 | 0:31:32
is being created. Free trade is the
best way to optimise wealth creation | 0:31:32 | 0:31:38
around the world. But, an economic
system has got to be doing two | 0:31:38 | 0:31:42
things, it has got to generate
wealth and distribute it. If you | 0:31:42 | 0:31:48
fail to distribute it in a fair way,
you get political unrest, and that | 0:31:48 | 0:31:52
is not good for an economic system
among other things. One of the | 0:31:52 | 0:31:57
things that Mr Trump has tapped
into, is a feeling that the | 0:31:57 | 0:32:00
distribution has not worked out
well. The economic system has not | 0:32:00 | 0:32:04
worked. Some of that take space with
wage inequality within the country, | 0:32:04 | 0:32:07
but some of that is the effect of
trade amongst countries. So, what | 0:32:07 | 0:32:14
our business leaders going to do
about this. A short time ago, we | 0:32:14 | 0:32:18
caught up with our economic editor.
Iron I think that the business | 0:32:18 | 0:32:23
leaders, here, do understand that
there is a risk to, some might say, | 0:32:23 | 0:32:28
their very existence, if economies
can't work, so that everyone feels | 0:32:28 | 0:32:31
that they can gain a little
prosperity. Frankly, people are | 0:32:31 | 0:32:35
going to respond to that by reacting
against businesses, by reacting | 0:32:35 | 0:32:41
against governments, by reacting
against the global elites. I think | 0:32:41 | 0:32:45
there is a genuine sense here, but
many other people, that although | 0:32:45 | 0:32:52
there is growth, it is not both
everybody. There have been talking | 0:32:52 | 0:32:57
about this trade issue. It's not
about protectionism, he is saying, | 0:32:57 | 0:33:04
it is about asymmetric trade, so
that America gets you less out of | 0:33:04 | 0:33:07
the free trade deals and the other
side of the free trade deal, and I | 0:33:07 | 0:33:11
think that there is a real
understanding Thomas Acquier be | 0:33:11 | 0:33:20
president companies actually onto
something, here. -- maybe Donald | 0:33:20 | 0:33:25
Trump is onto something here.
Everybody seems very happy with the | 0:33:25 | 0:33:29
global state of the economy, so
where are they -- what are they | 0:33:29 | 0:33:33
going to do about this idea that
they have to look out for those | 0:33:33 | 0:33:36
people who have not benefited from
the surge in wealth? Every since the | 0:33:36 | 0:33:42
financial crisis, there have been
one big trend which businesses | 0:33:42 | 0:33:44
really need to think about. The
returns to capital, to assets have | 0:33:44 | 0:33:49
been far higher than the returns to
income, to Labour. And, around the | 0:33:49 | 0:33:54
world, particularly in developed
countries, there has been as incomes | 0:33:54 | 0:33:59
grieves, and writers have been
rising faster than wages. Must ask | 0:33:59 | 0:34:05
you about the meeting with the Prime
Minister, Theresa May. He has | 0:34:05 | 0:34:08
treated in the last hour or so about
the special relationship, which is | 0:34:08 | 0:34:12
very much a British time, call me a
cynic. Somebody has Odyssey told him | 0:34:12 | 0:34:17
that it is important to him --
obviously told him that it is | 0:34:17 | 0:34:21
important to the British side. I
think you are at salute the right, | 0:34:21 | 0:34:25
that. If you think about what
Britain is about to embark on, it is | 0:34:25 | 0:34:31
and extraction from the European
Union. The last thing that Theresa | 0:34:31 | 0:34:35
May wants is frankly a war on two
fronts on trade, a battle with the | 0:34:35 | 0:34:39
Americans on trade, and also this
divorce from the European Union in, | 0:34:39 | 0:34:43
leaving the single market, and
leaving the customs union. Many | 0:34:43 | 0:34:49
people forget that America is the
second-largest destination for UK | 0:34:49 | 0:34:54
exports, behind the whole of the EU,
so there is already a big and | 0:34:54 | 0:34:59
important relationship between the
two Mac countries, but of course, as | 0:34:59 | 0:35:02
you suggest, the proportion of
exports from Britain going to | 0:35:02 | 0:35:06
America is far larger than the
proportion of experts from America | 0:35:06 | 0:35:09
back to Britain. So, yes, more
important from Britain and for | 0:35:09 | 0:35:13
America, but, I think there was a
some genuine warm words, here. But | 0:35:13 | 0:35:21
one word to not mean a free-trade
eel. What will be substance like I? | 0:35:21 | 0:35:26
We won't know that for many years.
He has been to Germany, Italy, and | 0:35:26 | 0:35:34
France and the Middle East, he still
has not been here. The manual macro | 0:35:34 | 0:35:41
-- Emmanuel Macron makes the first
visit. A bit like our relationship, | 0:35:41 | 0:35:51
right, Christian, it doesn't look
very special... OK, let's move on. | 0:35:51 | 0:35:58
Is work! It worked! It does. And
come and visit one day. | 0:35:58 | 0:36:14
I have been getting reaction to this
comment from a member of the US | 0:36:18 | 0:36:22
administration. We have every reason
to think that the Turks will think | 0:36:22 | 0:36:29
through their long-term relationship
with the unit rates, and will take | 0:36:29 | 0:36:32
that into consideration. That they
will de-escalates tensions. So, | 0:36:32 | 0:36:38
would likely tag at this point to
pull back from the actions that they | 0:36:38 | 0:36:42
are taking against the Kurds. We
would like that. The talking to them | 0:36:42 | 0:36:49
about integrals Machan we are. But
what is the response was Magellan | 0:36:49 | 0:36:52
Mac I will let them handle that.
Talk about counterterrorism efforts. | 0:36:52 | 0:37:05
The focus is now on rebuilding the
US military, does that mean that | 0:37:05 | 0:37:09
from a military perspective, the US
is thinking that the war against | 0:37:09 | 0:37:13
Isis is over, and that there is a
lead of -- less of a focus on | 0:37:13 | 0:37:17
America. Tenner we have got to be a
just and recalibrate based on the | 0:37:17 | 0:37:21
start of the enemy, and there is no
question that Isis has been | 0:37:21 | 0:37:26
decimated. What we can't do, is take
our eye off remaining forces. There | 0:37:26 | 0:37:31
has an Isis hasn't, and in Al-Qaeda
presence. We have seen a pattern in | 0:37:31 | 0:37:39
the past where Al-Qaeda have been
defeated only to re-merge. Defeat | 0:37:39 | 0:37:45
and long-term defeat are different.
People get a little too excited | 0:37:45 | 0:37:50
about the reduction in control to
physical light and space. At the | 0:37:50 | 0:37:53
moment, we have a large Isis
presents across the globe, but in | 0:37:53 | 0:37:59
Syria, we have to make sure that we
defeat them completely. The White | 0:37:59 | 0:38:06
House's representative speaking to
me earlier. I spoke to her about the | 0:38:06 | 0:38:16
conflict, there, and about Europe's
reliance on America, and how it is | 0:38:16 | 0:38:19
changing. So, we have to keep in
mind that this escalation hast to | 0:38:19 | 0:38:30
stop. Are you asking the Turkish
Government to de-escalates? | 0:38:30 | 0:38:38
Everybody is asking them. Even if
security Council, this is correct, | 0:38:38 | 0:38:41
because there is no military
solution at the permanent conflict, | 0:38:41 | 0:38:45
over there. This brings to be me
larger question of Syria. If you | 0:38:45 | 0:38:49
look at different powers acting in
their interests, there is only one | 0:38:49 | 0:38:56
solution, and this will be a
negotiating solution under the roof | 0:38:56 | 0:39:01
of the United Nations, because we
have so many interests in the | 0:39:01 | 0:39:06
region, and none of them will be
able to bring peace to that area. | 0:39:06 | 0:39:12
The arms we were talking about have
been delivered jointly as 2006 to | 0:39:12 | 0:39:19
2013, so this is way back. But,...
We have a very clear regime in | 0:39:19 | 0:39:27
Germany. This is a decision of the
whole Government, that has to be | 0:39:27 | 0:39:31
discussed. Presidents Donald Trump
is in Davos. Do you agree with | 0:39:31 | 0:39:42
Angela Merkel that the moment has
come where Europe can no longer rely | 0:39:42 | 0:39:47
on the American security umbrella in
the way that it has done since the | 0:39:47 | 0:39:50
end of the Second World War? First
of all, the friendship between | 0:39:50 | 0:39:57
Europe and the United States has a
very strong foundation, and we will | 0:39:57 | 0:40:01
never forget that. So, there are
zillions of brilliant relationships | 0:40:01 | 0:40:07
between Americans and Europeans. I
am feeling a but coming on. Not a | 0:40:07 | 0:40:15
bad, but we as -- as lean as
Europeans, we have to take it on. Be | 0:40:15 | 0:40:25
it in Ukraine or the middle east, we
have got to be able to solve them, | 0:40:25 | 0:40:30
because nobody else. Then for us.
The German defence minister, there. | 0:40:30 | 0:40:36
It is interesting when you talk
about the tensions that thereafter | 0:40:36 | 0:40:39
at the moment with a key Nato ally
like Turkey, just how brittle some | 0:40:39 | 0:40:44
of these relationships are,
particularly around the Middle East, | 0:40:44 | 0:40:46
at the moment. You talk about the
Palestinians, a spat with the Turks, | 0:40:46 | 0:40:50
and we all know what is going on
with the Iranians nuclear situation. | 0:40:50 | 0:41:00
She was trying to put a positive
spin on the idea that America might | 0:41:00 | 0:41:04
be retreating from something good in
those bats, and this compensated | 0:41:04 | 0:41:08
world that we are living in, the
Middle East just to name one of | 0:41:08 | 0:41:11
those areas, and what she was tied
to say, is that we don't really like | 0:41:11 | 0:41:15
America first, but it has had the
upside of forcing us to address our | 0:41:15 | 0:41:20
own security issues, and how we are
going to deal with these things. | 0:41:20 | 0:41:23
Maybe it is forcing Europe's and
European countries to set up to be | 0:41:23 | 0:41:27
paid a bit more, and not rely on
America the way that they have done | 0:41:27 | 0:41:31
the last few years. They echoed in
polite terms that they are part | 0:41:31 | 0:41:41
depended on the United States. Much
more positive, but the same message. | 0:41:41 | 0:41:47
I would like to choose an thing
rather touching that has happened in | 0:41:47 | 0:41:50
British politics, today, Katty.
Baroness Tessa Jowell has been given | 0:41:50 | 0:42:00
a standing ovation after delivering
a emotional speech about new cancer | 0:42:00 | 0:42:06
treatments. She was diagnosed with a
severe form of brain cancer last | 0:42:06 | 0:42:11
May. I hope that this debate will
give hope to other cancer patients, | 0:42:11 | 0:42:17
like me so that we can live well
together with cancer, not just die | 0:42:17 | 0:42:25
of it. All of us, for longer. Thank
you. | 0:42:25 | 0:42:34 | |
APPLAUSE | 0:42:34 | 0:42:44
It is something that many people
have not wanted to talk about all | 0:42:50 | 0:42:53
show, do you think that Tessa Jowell
standing up like that lifts the veil | 0:42:53 | 0:42:58
of secrecy on the treatment? It is
interesting you say that. The | 0:42:58 | 0:43:04
testimony from cancer sufferers
should be enough for MPs to know | 0:43:04 | 0:43:06
what is needed in the NHS, but at
the moment, they have two very | 0:43:06 | 0:43:10
prominent figures in politics, Nick
Bowles, the Conservative MP who has | 0:43:10 | 0:43:15
had a real problem with cancer, and
he spoke very candidly about the | 0:43:15 | 0:43:18
extra money that is needed in the
NHS, and many have had this, today | 0:43:18 | 0:43:22
from Tessa Jowell, who of course is
a very big figure in the labour | 0:43:22 | 0:43:26
movement. So, it is interesting. It
shouldn't need to be politician | 0:43:26 | 0:43:30
sitting in the house suffering from
cancer that puts this in such terms, | 0:43:30 | 0:43:35
it should be enough to get it from
ordinary patients,, but of course it | 0:43:35 | 0:43:39
does help the argument with the
debate when they are sitting among | 0:43:39 | 0:43:42
them. And good for her, a brave
thing to do. | 0:43:42 | 0:43:54
The idea is that a new network will
be set up, including restaurants, | 0:44:12 | 0:44:16
shops and businesses, where you can
fill up your water bottle, rather | 0:44:16 | 0:44:20
than buying a new one. Water UK, who
are behind the idea, say that this | 0:44:20 | 0:44:25
could end disposable plastic --
people dispose of Artic bottles by | 0:44:25 | 0:44:31
tens of millions year. | 0:44:31 | 0:44:41
For this to really work it needs
to be on every high street, | 0:44:58 | 0:45:01
in every shop and cafe. | 0:45:01 | 0:45:11
You are watching, Beyond 100 Days.
The BBC has been hearing details | 0:46:15 | 0:46:20
about how Saudi Arabia's
anti-corruption drive is being | 0:46:20 | 0:46:22
conducted. It began last November,
with the rounding up and attention | 0:46:22 | 0:46:26
of dozens of citizens, including
number is the Saudi royal family. A | 0:46:26 | 0:46:31
Canadian -based business Murnan has
been talking to Newsnight's Mark | 0:46:31 | 0:46:38
Irving. Earlier in November, dozens
of Saudi Arabia's richest men, | 0:46:38 | 0:46:46
including Ambers of the raw family
were swept up and detained in | 0:46:46 | 0:46:50
Riyadh, Ritz-Carlton hotel. It has
been called an anti-corruption | 0:46:50 | 0:46:56
drive, but inmates were being
tortured and were required to sign | 0:46:56 | 0:47:00
of their fortunes in order to be
released. Those facing ... With | 0:47:00 | 0:47:13
state in EuroDisney and high profile
companies makes him Saudi Arabia's | 0:47:13 | 0:47:20
richest businessman. But, his wealth
have also made him a rival to the | 0:47:20 | 0:47:26
Crown Prince and architect of the
anti-corruption drive. On Monday, | 0:47:26 | 0:47:31
the Arab digests website reported
that Canadian -based businessman, | 0:47:31 | 0:47:35
Alan Bender, seen here to the right
had been flown to the kingdom, as it | 0:47:35 | 0:47:41
but a case. Mr Bender was taken to a
site near the hotel. BBC Newsnight | 0:47:41 | 0:47:49
managed to locate Mr Bender in
Toronto, he was able to confirm his | 0:47:49 | 0:47:58
trip in December,... He was brought
in through the teleconference, and | 0:47:58 | 0:48:06
he was sat down. We were looking at
each other, face-to-face. Did he | 0:48:06 | 0:48:10
look as if he was in some way being
ill treated, or was he just shocked | 0:48:10 | 0:48:14
to see you? I would say, he looked,
he didn't look comfortable. He was | 0:48:14 | 0:48:22
unshaven. He didn't look in his best
condition. At all. He looked tired, | 0:48:22 | 0:48:32
a lot of twitching during the
conversation, whilst I was reading | 0:48:32 | 0:48:36
the script out to him. The Saudi
authorities had prepared a script of | 0:48:36 | 0:48:43
allegations for Mr Bender to read
out to him via video teleconference | 0:48:43 | 0:48:47
link. I would say that my presence
was... Details that they needed to | 0:48:47 | 0:48:58
confront him, because I am probably
be any person who was involved in | 0:48:58 | 0:49:02
personal and direct negotiations
with him. Related to a very personal | 0:49:02 | 0:49:08
matter. Those very personal matters
related to his separation from a | 0:49:08 | 0:49:14
former long-time partner, who Mr
Bender represented in settlement | 0:49:14 | 0:49:18
negotiations. The Saudi authorities,
it seems, want to use this to | 0:49:18 | 0:49:22
pressure him to sign over his
foreign wealth. These two know each | 0:49:22 | 0:49:28
other very well, and the Saudis flew
in Alan Bender, and other bold | 0:49:28 | 0:49:35
business -- old business adversaries
of him, to try and put pressure on | 0:49:35 | 0:49:39
him, and try and crack him, and try
and make him do what the Crown | 0:49:39 | 0:49:44
Prince once, and hand over his
foreign assets, and make video taped | 0:49:44 | 0:49:48
confessions to all of his guilt, and
swear allegiance. The Saudis have | 0:49:48 | 0:49:56
announced that the hotel will soon
resume its normal role, but there is | 0:49:56 | 0:50:00
evidence to think that they might
have been transferred to the | 0:50:00 | 0:50:08
attention elsewhere, even in
December. It looked more like | 0:50:08 | 0:50:11
something related to a jail cell.
Even the sounds of the doors sliding | 0:50:11 | 0:50:17
back and forth. It did not look like
he was... Alan Bender's account is a | 0:50:17 | 0:50:24
singular one. The Saudi authorities
have not yet responded to our | 0:50:24 | 0:50:27
request for comment. But, it gives a
good idea of the length that the | 0:50:27 | 0:50:32
kingdom's rulings were able to go to
humble a successful businessman. | 0:50:32 | 0:50:41
Such an interesting story. Way back
in 1975, during the renovation of a | 0:50:41 | 0:50:46
church in Basel in Switzerland, the
workmen made a unusual discovery. | 0:50:46 | 0:50:53
Basel is a historic city, and has
extensive records of their match in | 0:50:53 | 0:50:58
families, but on this occasion,
there was no information on who this | 0:50:58 | 0:51:04
money had been. However, they
finally know who she is. And their | 0:51:04 | 0:51:10
results might well surprise you. | 0:51:10 | 0:51:20
With me is a relative of Boris
Johnson. Anyway, you must being | 0:52:08 | 0:52:17
amazed. Most people only get a dusty
photograph, or a portrait. We all | 0:52:17 | 0:52:27
have monies. -- mummies. But this is
a special one. I am shocked. First | 0:52:27 | 0:52:38
thing I knew about it was this
morning. This lady, yes of course I | 0:52:38 | 0:52:42
knew that I had ancestors, and I
knew I had them. We all have them, | 0:52:42 | 0:52:46
and I knew that I had them from
different parts of the world, but I | 0:52:46 | 0:52:49
did not know that I had those
ancestors on my mother's side. I | 0:52:49 | 0:52:54
knew that I had them on my father's
side, and my father's grandmother | 0:52:54 | 0:53:03
was heartless. But, this is news to
me. It is at a good story, that they | 0:53:03 | 0:53:07
took a sample of the DNA for her big
toe. And they know that they -- they | 0:53:07 | 0:53:14
know that she had... Apparently she
had syphilis, because she was busy | 0:53:14 | 0:53:25
treating the sick and poor and
wounded, and managed to catch it in | 0:53:25 | 0:53:29
the course of that noble work. We
should bring in Boris' tweet. But, | 0:53:29 | 0:53:42
as you say, it was because she was
treating the sick. What you make of | 0:53:42 | 0:53:51
this Katty? Join the club. My
grandmother was less. But, we should | 0:53:51 | 0:53:56
clarify that she died of mercury
poisoning, isn't that right? She | 0:53:56 | 0:54:01
did. And it is the Mercury poisoning
that cause being bombing affect on | 0:54:01 | 0:54:08
the corpse. There it was, you feel a
little bit sorry for the lady, | 0:54:08 | 0:54:13
because she was dug up once in 8043,
-- 18 43. And then re-dug up in | 0:54:13 | 0:54:22
1975. You might have expected it,
that you were allowed to lie there | 0:54:22 | 0:54:29
in peace, but what will happen to
her now? Will they send her back to | 0:54:29 | 0:54:33
Britain? Was to be caught by the
immigration gritters? Who knows. | 0:54:33 | 0:54:39
Well, she is 230 years owed, and she
is looking really good, I must say. | 0:54:39 | 0:54:43
She marry someone from the church,
and India had a daughter who... That | 0:54:43 | 0:54:52
indeed was my grandmother's name.
When we were growing up,... Anyway, | 0:54:52 | 0:55:05
Boris, has a middle name which is
the same name. The line goes down | 0:55:05 | 0:55:10
fairly strongly. They are brilliant,
these Swiss people, they have got | 0:55:10 | 0:55:16
she blames -- sheer brains. They
worked out that what they dug | 0:55:16 | 0:55:29
around, and reckons that she must
have come from one of a fairly small | 0:55:29 | 0:55:34
number of families, so then they did
some DNA testing, and worked up from | 0:55:34 | 0:55:38
the lady, that this was possibly
related to the... And bearing in | 0:55:38 | 0:55:45
mind that we are the only ones that
family left, they got us. Right, you | 0:55:45 | 0:55:56
up there tomorrow, Katty. Yes, I was
