LineFromTo

of the annual Asian economic forum

being held in Vietnam.

0:00:000:00:01

In around 10 minutes

it's time for Newswatch.

0:00:010:00:04

First, though, here's Click

0:00:040:00:09

Welcome to China, to Shenzhen.

0:00:300:00:34

Believe it or not, this place

was once a small fishing village.

0:00:340:00:42

Yeah...

0:00:420:00:43

Not anymore.

0:00:430:00:43

Now, it's a mega-city

of nearly 20 million people.

0:00:430:00:48

It's most famous for creating

consumer electronics,

0:00:480:00:50

often imitations of premium brands.

0:00:500:00:51

But as China has opened its doors

to international trade in the last

0:00:510:00:55

decade, it has undergone

a transformation, making strides

0:00:550:00:57

toward becoming a global power

and moving away from that image

0:00:570:01:00

of being a simple manufacturer

of good, fake or otherwise,

0:01:000:01:02

to one of innovation,

especially of tech.

0:01:030:01:05

"Made in China" is fast becoming

"Designed in China."

0:01:050:01:07

Next week, we'll visit some

of the companies that call Shenzhen

0:01:070:01:10

home, but this week,

we are meeting this guy.

0:01:100:01:13

This is Little Cloud, and recently,

he's gone where no turtle

0:01:130:01:16

has gone before.

0:01:160:01:34

He's just completed a test flight

of a journey that one day might take

0:01:340:01:37

humans to near space.

0:01:370:01:53

This is Kuang-Chi's

Traveller Project.

0:01:530:01:54

We have seen this kind of

stratospheric helium project before.

0:01:540:01:59

We visited WorldView

in the US back in February

0:01:590:02:01

to see their enormous inflatable.

0:02:010:02:03

I think you have the

world's biggest table.

0:02:030:02:07

And a Spanish outfit,

Zero to Infinity, is also

0:02:070:02:10

trying something similar.

0:02:100:02:10

So why does the Traveller Project's

director feel he can beat

0:02:110:02:13

them to it.

0:02:130:02:19

We want to be the first one.

0:02:190:02:20

We need to try hard

to become the first one.

0:02:210:02:23

Because, in Shenzhen,

the environment is very good,

0:02:230:02:25

and a lot of people

want to do big things.

0:02:250:02:28

And the government supports us.

0:02:280:02:29

So, I think that Shenzhen gives us

a very good environment

0:02:300:02:32

to accelerate the progress.

0:02:330:02:52

The secret, though,

is also in the science.

0:02:520:02:54

Now, the balloon material

looks quite ordinary,

0:02:540:02:56

but of course, it's not.

0:02:560:03:06

It is a special kind of polyethylene

which has to resist the low,

0:03:060:03:10

low temperatures of

the stratosphere, damaging effects

0:03:100:03:12

of ultraviolet and ozone.

0:03:120:03:19

And tt also needs to be

able to stop the really,

0:03:190:03:22

really tiny molecules

of helium from escaping.

0:03:220:03:24

This kind of space tourism is billed

as being cheaper and safer

0:03:240:03:27

than rocket-based alternatives

being trialled by Virgin Galactic

0:03:270:03:29

and SpaceX.

0:03:300:03:30

Normal people, even

older ones, can do this.

0:03:300:03:32

You don't need a strong body.

0:03:320:03:34

You must be very strong to be

an astronaut and train for many

0:03:340:03:37

days and years.

0:03:370:03:38

However, this does not need that.

0:03:380:03:42

Why did you choose a turtle.

0:03:420:03:44

Ah, that's a good question.

0:03:440:03:45

Because the turtle has a long life.

0:03:450:03:47

Sometimes it can be living

for more than 100 years!

0:03:470:03:50

The turtle can live in water,

it can survive in an low-oxygen

0:03:500:03:53

environment.

0:03:530:03:58

Is it cruel to send

a turtle up there?

0:03:580:04:00

Hmm...

0:04:000:04:01

What can I say?

0:04:010:04:02

I just say we need to do this kind

of experiment before human beings

0:04:020:04:06

in the near space.

0:04:060:04:07

We need to pick up a kind of animal.

0:04:070:04:14

Hmm...

0:04:140:04:31

Well, as usual, not a great life

being an animal involved

0:04:310:04:34

in human exploration.

0:04:340:04:39

While these guys are busy trying

to win a race to space,

0:04:390:04:42

others are trying to put

a rover on the moon.

0:04:420:04:45

And, fortunately, this time,

it's not a real dog.

0:04:450:04:47

Now, you may remember earlier

in the year we visited the Indian

0:04:480:04:51

space start-up, Indus,

in their Bangalore warehouse.

0:04:510:04:57

They are one of five teams competing

for a $20 million prize

0:04:570:05:00

if they are the first company

to land and drive a robot

0:05:000:05:04

on the moon.

0:05:040:05:17

And one thing we learned

while we were there was that

0:05:170:05:20

to save costs, they're

sharing their rocket space

0:05:200:05:22

with a Japanese competitor, iSpace.

0:05:220:05:37

Well, now we're paying them a visit

to find out how they think they're

0:05:370:05:41

going to win.

0:05:410:06:02

This is the space suit.

0:06:020:06:03

And this is a hammer

to break something.

0:06:030:06:06

OK.

0:06:060:06:06

Well, with the important

stuff out of the way,

0:06:060:06:08

time to talk space.

0:06:080:06:09

What inspired you to

enter this challenge?

0:06:090:06:11

I have always been

interested in space.

0:06:110:06:18

I worked for a firm that

one weekend asked me,

0:06:180:06:21

why don't you help

in the lunar race?

0:06:210:06:33

It may be a small operation,

but what they lack in size

0:06:330:06:36

they certainly make up for in style.

0:06:370:06:38

It is not just the skyhigh rents

of Tokyo responsible

0:06:380:06:42

for the diminished dimensions

of the office, it is also

0:06:420:06:45

because their plan to hitch a ride

on the Team Indus lander means

0:06:450:06:48

iSpace only have to build the rover,

ideally one that is faster than Team

0:06:490:06:52

Indus.

0:06:520:06:55

Just put in a little bit of a weapon

on the side to bump them into a

0:06:550:07:03

hole. They are not prepared to cheat

but it definitely looks like a smart

0:07:030:07:12

ride.

0:07:120:07:13

A depth camera is being designed

to recognise unexpected rocks

0:07:130:07:15

and stop before it

collides with anything.

0:07:150:07:17

And because of a communications

delay of just over a second,

0:07:170:07:20

it will be steered and moved one

step at a time to give everyone time

0:07:200:07:24

to think as it gradually

moves across the surface.

0:07:240:07:27

Mind you, you still need the very

best pilots and technicians

0:07:270:07:30

in the business to command

and strive this thing.

0:07:300:07:32

Looks like I'm going

to scrape that rock.

0:07:320:07:34

Seriously?

0:07:340:07:35

Oh, man!

0:07:350:07:42

This is just a demo unit

for numpties like me to use,

0:07:420:07:45

but the real prototype

is being developed just

0:07:450:07:47

across the office

in the clean room..

0:07:470:07:49

And the one they build next will be

the one that actually goes

0:07:490:07:53

to the moon, well,

if nothing goes wrong,

0:07:530:07:55

say, by letting me touch it.

0:07:550:07:58

It is so light.

0:07:580:07:59

Just four kilograms.

0:07:590:08:00

Remarkable.

0:08:000:08:04

I am John Walker,

the Chief Engineer.

0:08:040:08:06

The worst thing that can happen

is we go to the moon

0:08:060:08:09

and for whatever reason

we don't get any function.

0:08:090:08:11

We are trying to win,

but at the end of the day,

0:08:110:08:15

we want to keep going back

to the moon again and again.

0:08:150:08:18

So we need that starting

point, we need data.

0:08:180:08:20

We need simulations.

0:08:200:08:25

That is why a huge part

of the mission's costs goes

0:08:250:08:28

towards testing, and that means

rigourous checks on the bespoke

0:08:280:08:31

wheels, control systems,

electronics, and perhaps most

0:08:310:08:33

crucially of all,

the communication system.

0:08:330:08:35

Of course, it is not just Team Indus

and Hakuto in the competition,

0:08:350:08:38

there is America's Moon Express,

Israel's Space IL, and Synergy Moon,

0:08:380:08:41

made up of six continents.

0:08:410:08:44

They all have contracts,

but when they take off

0:08:450:08:47

is anyone's guess.

0:08:470:08:58

It is very secretive.

0:08:580:08:59

What happens if you find out

they launch in November?

0:08:590:09:02

It is possible.

0:09:020:09:03

However, it is very difficult

to launch without any notification

0:09:030:09:06

beforehand.

0:09:060:09:06

So, I'm still very...

0:09:060:09:07

I am sometimes nervous

when they will make an announcement.

0:09:070:09:31

Yeah.

0:09:310:09:31

Just like the other teams,

iSpace is about more than just one

0:09:320:09:35

mission to the moon.

0:09:350:09:44

They are hoping that the data

they gather and the skills

0:09:440:09:47

they learn could have much more

profound complications

0:09:470:09:49

after the mission

whether they win or not.

0:09:490:09:51

We recognise this race is just

the start of everything

0:09:510:09:54

in the future.

0:09:540:09:55

And we think that the moon

is the best place to mine resources

0:09:550:09:58

and then supply resources

such as fuel into space.

0:09:580:10:00

This is the first step

for this establishment.

0:10:010:10:11

There is certainly a loss

that could go wrong.

0:10:110:10:13

Besides the perils of space,

they still need to waste a huge deal

0:10:140:10:17

of cashier on Terra Firma before

anything can take off.

0:10:170:10:20

One thing is for sure, though.

0:10:200:10:27

We are so excited about

this race to the moon.

0:10:270:10:30

But what has become apparent

is it is not just about getting

0:10:300:10:33

there first, it is not just

about the prize money,

0:10:330:10:39

it is just as important to get data

back and build up this knowledge

0:10:390:10:42

to be able to go there again

and again and again in the future.

0:10:420:10:47

And when these guys launch,

we are going to bring that to you.

0:10:470:11:01

That is it for this weak. There is

more on line. Have you ever wanted

0:11:010:11:10

to meet us in the flash? -- flesh.

Me either. This is where you can go

0:11:100:11:25

to the Click live show. You can see

some of the things we have wrought

to you on the show live on stage. --
