Her the wait is over. This week, Click takes a ride around a smarter

0:00:010:00:06

city, where queues I giving way to big data. We will also breathe

0:00:060:00:10

heavily over the uplifting technology that keeps England's

0:00:100:00:14

finest on the ball. Or of that, plus the latest tech

0:00:140:00:21

news and a music tutorial that makes playing guitar as easy as E,

0:00:210:00:31
0:00:310:00:32

A, D, G, B. Welcome to Click. These days, more

0:00:320:00:37

and more ordinary objects are going online. They're giving of

0:00:370:00:42

information about where they are and what they are doing. The grand

0:00:420:00:46

vision is that one day all of this data will be gathered and processed

0:00:460:00:51

and used to make our lives easier and to help make systems and whole

0:00:510:01:01
0:01:010:01:06

cities run smoother and smarter. Cities generate an enormous amount

0:01:060:01:12

of data every day. In London, 8 million residents can already find

0:01:120:01:17

out where and when trains, buses and planes will arrive. The

0:01:170:01:21

information is all there, available through a multitude of applications

0:01:210:01:25

and websites. It is not only the transport network that broadcasts

0:01:250:01:31

its status. We do as well. If you own a smartphone, for example,

0:01:310:01:36

chances are your location is being collected and used into live

0:01:360:01:46
0:01:460:01:51

traffic information on Google Maps. Parking spaces are also getting

0:01:510:01:56

smarter. In this exclusive part of town, an exclusive trial is helping

0:01:560:02:04

dapper clientele find a well- fitting spot. These sensors in

0:02:040:02:07

parking bays report back their availability every few seconds,

0:02:070:02:12

allowing visitors to find vacant spaces. But it is not just about

0:02:120:02:17

packing right now. These graphs should give an insight into the

0:02:170:02:21

likelihood of finding a space at any time of the day you choose.

0:02:210:02:26

Over time, this collected data can help the council make better

0:02:260:02:31

parking arrangements. What we have been able to establish is that we

0:02:310:02:38

probably do not have the packing right. We might have too many Bays

0:02:380:02:42

of certain kinds. Perhaps we can use this to reconfigure the street

0:02:420:02:46

and provide more spaces for people that need them at the right hands

0:02:460:02:53

of the day. Smart packing, smart buses, smart trains, smart cars.

0:02:530:02:57

But what is not so smart is the fact that all of these projects a

0:02:570:03:01

separate ventures and do not talk to each other. That means in London,

0:03:010:03:06

at least, the data generated by all these applications is the only

0:03:060:03:13

thing guaranteed to flow freely. For a city to get smarter, you need

0:03:130:03:18

to draw them altogether. That is why we have come here, to Dublin.

0:03:180:03:25

Like many cities, it already has a traffic cameras, sensors on the

0:03:250:03:29

tarmac to protect traffic flow, buses reporting their positions

0:03:290:03:34

back to base. But crucially, this city has volunteered itself to be a

0:03:340:03:38

test bed, to see what happens when you gather all that information

0:03:380:03:43

together and see whether it can be used to predict the future.

0:03:430:03:49

At IBM's Dublin Research Centre, a new traffic management system is

0:03:490:03:54

analysing the City's circulation, trying to spot patterns in the ebb

0:03:540:03:59

and flow of the traffic. Incidents, accidents, closures and weather can

0:03:590:04:03

all have effects beyond their immediate surroundings. And what

0:04:030:04:07

happens in the cards to a particular combination of events,

0:04:070:04:11

the system should help officials for predict how a problem might

0:04:110:04:17

affect the City's nervous system. It will not just rely on Dublin's

0:04:170:04:24

official eyes and ears. It will also mash up social networking and

0:04:240:04:30

other information streams. It will assimilate all of this data into a

0:04:300:04:34

big picture, meaning potential problems can be spotted and

0:04:340:04:39

resolved before they even become problems. Taking that data and

0:04:390:04:43

breaking it down and building on it and finding the relationship

0:04:430:04:47

between weather and how people drive, what is the relationship

0:04:470:04:54

between temperature and humidity? What is the relationship between

0:04:540:05:00

the time of day? We need enough data to build models that can help

0:05:000:05:05

us to predict and optimise. That is part of the research, to say that

0:05:050:05:12

we need effective volumes of data and effective algorithms so that we

0:05:120:05:17

can do predictions that we have not seen the data for. The optimal goal

0:05:170:05:21

is to use the City's existing infrastructure more intelligently

0:05:210:05:26

rather than dismantling it. If a train is delayed, for example, the

0:05:260:05:31

boss should know that it needs to wait so it does not travel and tea

0:05:310:05:37

and leave the next one overcrowded. -- entity. This application, still

0:05:370:05:42

in the early days of development, uses sophisticated production

0:05:420:05:46

algorithms to minimise journey times and, just as importantly,

0:05:460:05:51

waiting times. It will know about any congestion and use historical

0:05:510:05:56

data to tell you how that might affect your on returning and make a

0:05:560:06:02

reliable assessment of your arrival time. -- estimate. It can guess

0:06:020:06:09

whether there will be a space to dock your bikes at any time of day.

0:06:090:06:13

Increasingly it will be a more personal kind of system. Your boss

0:06:140:06:20

is there in five minutes, off you go. You're on the bus and they will

0:06:200:06:24

say that there is an accident overhead and you're better off

0:06:240:06:30

getting off. All through the journey you're being provided with

0:06:300:06:37

information and providing information back. Maybe when you

0:06:370:06:46

say that this is a slow bus or a good route. You will get a pain

0:06:460:06:55

singer better last bus is ten minutes away. -- been saying Europe.

0:06:550:07:00

A smarter city is also a greener city. Tour traffic jams mean fewer

0:07:000:07:06

idling vehicles spewing harmful emissions into pedestrian airspace.

0:07:060:07:09

Current attempts to reduce pollution have not proved quite as

0:07:090:07:14

smart. In Mexico City and Beijing, for example, each car is forbidden

0:07:140:07:18

for driving for one day per week depending on the last digit of its

0:07:180:07:23

licence plate. That just leads to drivers avoiding the ban by find a

0:07:230:07:29

second car with a different licence plate. It is in the developing

0:07:290:07:33

world where IBM hopes to make the biggest impact. These are the

0:07:330:07:39

movements of the citizens of a city in the Ivory Coast captured by

0:07:390:07:44

monitoring mobile phone signals. By observing the flow of the Work Day,

0:07:440:07:54
0:07:540:07:55

bus routes can be extended to ease the to congestion. By 2050, 9

0:07:550:08:00

billion people, 70% of us, will live in cities. The most expansion

0:08:000:08:04

is expected in the developing world. By helping to plan and ship the

0:08:040:08:08

circulation now, those cities stand more of a chance of breeding more

0:08:080:08:15

freely for longer. Next up, a look at this week's tete

0:08:150:08:19

news. A student falsely linked to the

0:08:190:08:22

Boston Marathon bombings on a social media site has been found

0:08:220:08:26

dead by members of his university rowing team in a river near Rhode

0:08:260:08:34

Island. It is not clear exactly when he died. He was one of two

0:08:350:08:38

people wrong they identified a suspect by users of the website

0:08:380:08:44

read it. They had already apologised to his family after the

0:08:440:08:53

discussions provoked an online witch hunt. And another news agency

0:08:530:08:58

fell foul of a suspected phishing attack this week.

0:08:580:09:03

Association press's Twitter account published a bogus post about

0:09:030:09:06

explosions at the White House. It caused stock markets to dip

0:09:060:09:16
0:09:160:09:17

temporarily. The Dow-Jones shaded 150 points. A group calling itself

0:09:170:09:23

the Syrian Electronic Army claims to be behind the attack.

0:09:230:09:27

If he says too many video games can damage your eyesight? Scientists

0:09:270:09:32

have found that a few rounds of cactus can help treat lazy eye with

0:09:320:09:36

these specially designed goggles. Each eye is given different bits of

0:09:360:09:40

information, forcing them to work together. Professors at McGill

0:09:400:09:44

University say that plenty video game worked better than

0:09:440:09:52

conventional patching of the could And finally, out of this world or

0:09:520:09:56

out of their minds, how about an interplanetary reality showed based

0:09:570:10:02

on a man trip to Mars? The Dutch organisation is already scouting

0:10:020:10:09

for potential contestants for the one-way seven-month trip. When

0:10:090:10:13

colonists arrived, they would live in a specially designed habitat to

0:10:130:10:16

protect them from the extreme temperatures and thin atmosphere.

0:10:160:10:20

It is not clear whether selling the global television rights would pay

0:10:200:10:30
0:10:300:10:37

for the trip, which is estimated at Football may not be the first thing

0:10:370:10:39

you think about when you think about tech. Except goal line

0:10:390:10:44

technology. But what about players and coaches, how do they stay ahead

0:10:440:10:50

of the competition? We went to the England team's headquarters to find

0:10:500:10:53

out. Nestled in the heart of England

0:10:530:10:58

beats the heart of English football. St George's Park has been a decade

0:10:580:11:04

in the making and, for the first time, a place all 24 national teams

0:11:040:11:11

from seniors through to juniors can call home. With eight pictures, two

0:11:110:11:15

hotels and state-of-the-art sports facilities, it has been future-

0:11:150:11:21

proofed and provides a modern environment for training. We can

0:11:210:11:25

give players and coaches the ability to capture information in

0:11:250:11:30

real time and have it available to them at any time in the future.

0:11:300:11:32

Whether they are back in their room in the training centre, wherever

0:11:320:11:38

they might be, they can access that information, analyse it and looked

0:11:380:11:46

to get better. Today it is my turn to get a taste of what the players

0:11:460:11:50

experience. I am practising on one of the international side pictures

0:11:500:11:55

and I need some improvement before I hit the big-time. But the

0:11:550:11:59

professionals don't need in for -- intuition. They have data by the

0:11:590:12:04

bucket load to help them and their coaches. The dressing-room

0:12:040:12:09

dressing-down used to consist -- consist of a pep-talk and a drink.

0:12:090:12:14

Now, it's a touch screen TV connected to a laptop. The coach

0:12:140:12:19

can analyse first half play. Information which has been manually

0:12:190:12:23

put into tablets from data collectors. They measure things

0:12:230:12:27

like successful passes, crosses, set plays and formations. All of

0:12:270:12:33

that data is sink with video and strategically placed cameras. Using

0:12:330:12:36

software, coaches can jump to any point in time and point out areas

0:12:360:12:42

for improvement. For example, underperformers may need to pace

0:12:420:12:48

themselves to sustain stamina. These tricks and tools help develop

0:12:480:12:53

that -- help develop the win in the second half. That is the theory.

0:12:530:12:59

That video and data can be crunched anew afterwards. Players and the

0:12:590:13:03

manager can comment and reflect online before they meet their next

0:13:030:13:07

opponents. And it's not just players to benefit. The philosophy

0:13:080:13:12

is to impact the whole football ecosystem up and down the land.

0:13:120:13:19

Whether it is analysing a pay you's performance, whatever data we can

0:13:190:13:24

collect that enhances their performance or the coach's

0:13:240:13:27

performance, those small differences add up to what we hope

0:13:270:13:32

is a significant difference over time. But this place is not just

0:13:320:13:36

about improving performance through analysis. It's at training ground,

0:13:360:13:42

keeping players at their peak fitness. That is where the Human

0:13:420:13:46

Performance Lab comes into play. At first glance it looks like your

0:13:460:13:50

average two. But it is pretty special on closer inspection. First,

0:13:500:13:55

I can measure my vitals. These skills are so advanced. They

0:13:550:14:01

measure your overall fat percentage and break it down. They also give a

0:14:010:14:09

disquieting level of detail about your body's composition. Lot of

0:14:090:14:14

food for thought. Maybe a little less food needed. Who knew I was

0:14:140:14:21

made up of 59% water?! But it is increasingly about athleticism. To

0:14:210:14:25

win the game, you need to stay ahead. This pressure plate is

0:14:250:14:30

connected to sensors and analyses your balance when you are standing

0:14:300:14:37

or walking. The Heat shows exactly how you distribute your weight. --

0:14:370:14:40

the heat map. And a slow-motion camera combined with software to

0:14:400:14:44

give players sophisticated data analysis when running. Both

0:14:440:14:48

machines can identify potential problem areas before they become

0:14:480:14:55

real injuries. Reactions are a vital part. This helps monitor and

0:14:550:14:59

improve peripheral vision. Great for goal is, where every second

0:14:590:15:03

counts. It might sound a bit clinical and indeed this place can

0:15:030:15:08

be a bit short on atmosphere. Take this altitude chamber, which gives

0:15:080:15:14

you a punishing workout by taking you one Mile High in a matter of

0:15:140:15:18

seconds. Aim higher still and you can get a work out which is well

0:15:180:15:23

and truly uplifting. Let me introduce you to the anti-gravity

0:15:230:15:27

treadmill. Only found in very few elite sporting establishments. Air

0:15:270:15:32

is pumped into the chamber, sealing in my lower body to reduce the

0:15:320:15:37

effects of gravity by 80%. It feels a little bit like I am running on

0:15:370:15:43

air. It puts less pressure on my joints, which is perfect for people

0:15:430:15:47

who need to preserve them at all costs, like footballers or even

0:15:470:15:51

simply people who were cut -- recovering from injury. A similar

0:15:510:15:56

take on this concept is found in the hydration pool. Here, the water

0:15:560:16:01

of buoyancy is taking the strain. After all of that intense training,

0:16:010:16:07

the real question is, has my play improved? Yes, it seems like there

0:16:070:16:13

is still a bit to go. At least you know what the golf

0:16:130:16:18

looks like! -- goal.
