-a subject that splits this country.

-The gun laws.

-On 1 October last year,

-22,000 people had gathered...

-..to enjoy a music festival

-on Las Vegas' famous Strip.

-As the festival drew to a close,

-a man called Stephen Paddock...

-..opened fire on the crowd from

-his room at the Mandalay Bay Hotel.

-AUTOMATIC GUNFIRE

-He killed 58 people,

-and 546 were injured.

-One of those present

-was Anthony Robone.

-He was there with his girlfriend

-and his brother, Nick...

-..who had been given festival

-tickets as a birthday present.

-So, this is it,

-this is where it happened.

-This is where it happened.

-It's Anthony's first time back here.

-Was that the stage?

-What was your initial reaction

-when you first heard the gunshots?

-Originally,

-we thought it was firecrackers.

-We didn't think much of it.

-It's fine, it's not gunshots,

-it isn't real.

-As I'm saying that,

-the third round goes off.

-Someone behind me said, "I got hit."

-I turned around and saw

-that my brother had been wounded.

-He was spitting up blood

-and bleeding from his shirt.

-OK, this is real,

-we've got to get out of here.

-When he had been shot,

-what went through your head?

-I was scared to death, you know.

-Not in the sense of,

-is anyone else going to get hit...

-..just the sense that he's injured.

-That's the biggest worry,

-making sure he's OK.

-But he's tough as nails,

-one of the toughest guys I know.

-If anyone will get through a gunshot

-to the chest, it's my brother.

-Nick did survive, but the scars

-remain, both physical and mental.

-Since the shooting,

-many memorials have been set up.

-They put faces

-to the horrors of 1 October.

-As you can see,

-there are 58 crosses here...

-..to commemorate

-those who died on 1 October.

-It includes

-over 30,000 individual items...

-..and was moved from its original

-location on the Las Vegas Strip.

-This is a book of condolence...

-..for people to pay tribute

-to those who died.

-This is quite powerful too.

-A child, maybe.

-"Dear Quinton, I miss you so much.

-I can't wait to see you again.

-"You were such a bright soul

-and I loved you with all my heart.

-"I can't wait to see you again

-and give you a super big hug...

-"..and I will be able to finally

-There are also contributions

-from survivors of that night.

-are among the most lax.

-..and there's no limit

-on how many guns one person can buy.

-when she was two.

-She has spent most of her life

-How did you react

-to the events of 1 October?

-The shooting at the Mandalay Bay.

-How did you react?

-It was really shocking, I mean.

-It happened 35 minutes away.

-It was at night,

-and the whole family got up.

-The phones were engaged.

-We went through social media.

-Oh my days, this happened here.

-Hundreds of people texted us,

-messaged us, to check we were OK.

-Since the shooting, some have called

-for gun laws to be tightened...

-..and limiting how many guns

-one person can buy.

-Do you think

-that stricter gun laws in America...

-..could have prevented

-what happened at the Mandalay Bay?

-Um, to be honest, no.

-People might find that shocking.

-Of course it would stop everything.

-But really, no.

-It's not the fact

-that guns killed all those people.

-That's not why it happened.

-It was the man behind it.

-It was his evil idea.

-But Catrin's mother,

-who grew up in Wales...

-..finds it harder

-to accept America's gun culture.

-Things like that

-don't happen often, obviously.

-It was very close to our home.

-Very close to people we know.

-It was just a shock,

-the biggest shock being the number.

-Just how many people

-were killed and injured...

-..and that nothing

-could have been done to prevent it.

-It was terrible.

-Are you in favour

-of stricter gun laws?

-Certainly.

-A lot of people argue

-that it wouldn't work anyway.

-That perpetrators of mass shootings

-have something wrong with them.

-But generally, I think

-stricter laws would be beneficial.

-Maybe then, over time,

-within a century even...

-..it might be more applicable

-to get rid of guns completely.

-Almost 300 people were working

-at the music festival...

-..at the time of the shooting.

-I met one of them, Heather Gooze,

-at a community memorial garden.

-That night, she was working

-behind one of the bars.

-But as the bullets hit...

-..she found herself

-trying to save lives.

-This was Jordan's Facebook picture,

-So, he's...

-..even more than anything else.

-..I'm not a best friend,

-I'm a perfect stranger who has

-a connection to this person...

-..that I'll never ever not have.

-and in a lot of people's opinion...

-..guns don't kill people,

-it's people that kill people.

-There are circumstances where guns

-have to be there, be allowed.

-But they should be regulated

-way more carefully.

-to bear arms, despite what you saw?

-I believe in it as long as

-there are stricter policies...

-checks and reasons for it.

-I don't think that anybody should be

-able to just walk in and get a gun.

-that just any person...

-The answer is kind of complicated.

-I'll try to simplify it.

-When our founders

-put the Constitution together...

-..they realized that the only thing

-that keeps a government...

-..from exceeding its authority

-is the citizens being armed.

-Historically, whenever the

-government has had all the power...

-..they've been very unfriendly

-to their citizens.

-So, the primary purpose

-for the Second Amendment...

-..is to make sure that we the people

-run the government...

-..and not the government

-dictates to us.

-Why does it still

-remain pertinent to this day?

-It was obviously created

-in the 18th century.

-How can it still be relevant?

-We are, as a country,

-not trustful of our government.

-I know we elect them, but they get

-in positions of power and stuff.

-It is a security thing for us...

-..to make sure

-that we have the ultimate authority.

-But isn't that true for many

-countries around the world?

-That their people

-do not trust their governments?

-If they don't have the Second

-Amendment, that's their fault.

-After the shooting in Las Vegas

-on 1 October 2017...

-were cancelled.

-This will be one of the first shows

-since the shooting.

-Americans own some 265 million guns.

-That's more than one gun per adult.

-Today, I'm meeting Gary and Melissa.

-Gary's an American,

-but Melissa hails from Port Talbot.

-They've come here,

-to the Las Vegas Gun Show.

-You keep guns in the house, do you?

-And that's for defence purposes?

-welcomes the camera's presence.

-But one woman is more than happy

-One of them, Moms Demand Action...

-..has invited me

-to its monthly meeting.

-If you've been accused

-of domestic violence...

-..and you're not a spouse

-or a live-in boyfriend...

-..you fall through a crack.

-Later, you could be

-in another relationship...

-..and you would not be prohibited

-from owning weapons.

-We'd like to close that loophole.

-Anyone convicted

-of domestic violence or stalking...

-..would automatically

-have their right to own weapons...

-..taken away if convicted.

-Right now, our background check

-system is lacking information.

-We would like there to be

-more information in the system.

-Would a bill such as that one...

-..have stopped Stephen Paddock

-from doing what he did in Las Vegas?

-I am not aware that any legislation

-that we could have passed...

-..would necessarily

-have affected him...

-..and I wish there were some

-legislation that we could pass...

-..retroactively...

-..but these bills in the future will

-prevent people from doing harm...

-..especially domestic abusers.

-I had expected the group

-to be completely anti-gun...

-..but to my surprise,

-that's not true.

-You're not actively opposed

-to the Second Amendment.

-A lot of our members are gun owners.

-I just think that it's

-not practical in this country.

-I think the solution...

-..has more to do

-with things that we can control...

-..as opposed to taking things

-away from people.

-But after spending time

-with the women...

-..it's clear to me that they are

-determined to bring about change.

-There are things that we can do.

-We use the horrible sadness

-of these events...

-..to power us through

-and support people in the future.

-in an affluent part of Las Vegas.

-Unlike many of their neighbours,

-they have no guns in the house.

-I want to know why.

-What's your opinion

-of American gun laws?

-The Second Amendment

-and the right to own a gun?

-Twenty years ago,

-I'd have been definitely against it.

-After living in America

-for so long...

-..I realize that it's part

-of the American psyche.

-It's hard to separate Americans

-from their guns.

-Myself, I don't like guns at all.

-I've never touched a gun

-or fired a gun...

-..and we don't have a gun here.

-I don't want a gun in my own home,

-with the children and so on.

-I don't feel the need for a gun

-with which to defend myself.

-But I do respect the right

-that Americans have to own a gun.

-Some of Gwennan's experiences

-with guns in America shock me.

-I once took the boys to soccer.

-It was late and we hadn't eaten.

-I said we'd go for tacos

-after training.

-We got out of the car

-and into the shop.

-Someone said we probably

-didn't want to eat there.

-It turned out that someone

-had just shot through the window.

-There was a bullet hole in it.

-It must have been a new experience.

-It must have been a new experience.

-It was really scary.

-But as someone who grew up there,

-is Catrin's opinion different?

-What do you think

-about the right to own guns?

-For me, guns are just

-a really normal part of my life.

-All my friends have guns.

-It's just normal for me.

-It's abnormal

-that we don't have any.

-Have you ever fired a gun?

-Yes, we have a lot of relatives

-in Arizona, where Dad's from.

-Loads of people there

-go out hunting.

-They're really good with guns,

-it's almost a sport for them.

-I went out there

-when we lived in Missouri.

-A bit more back country.

-A school field trip went to a gun

-range and everyone shot guns.

-What if one of your children,

-when they're older...

-..decide to buy a gun

-and keep a gun in the house?

-Would you have a problem with that?

-I'd be surprised, first of all.

-No, it wouldn't be a big problem.

-But I'd insist

-that they get training.

-A lot of people here have held guns

-and fired guns as children.

-They know how to handle a gun,

-but our children don't.

-Training courses do exist.

-Some are even aimed solely at women.

-Any time

-there is a shooting of any kind...

-..they start this gun control crap,

-and that's my opinion.

-Of course, as it's Nevada,

-the man in charge is Don Turner.

-They learn basic firearm safety

-and storage.

-We teach them about

-our suicide prevention programme.

-They get issued with gun locks...

-..so they can keep them locked,

-if they want.

-Then we have coaches

-that help them shoot.

-The course started last April.

-On launch day,

-they had prepared to train 60 women.

-They ended up training almost 300,

-and turned over 600 away.

-What brings you here?

-A website in our neighbourhood

-mentioned the Annie Oakley Program.

-I do have a gun at home.

-I wanted to learn how to do it

-properly from the experts.

-Why do you want to make sure

-that you know how to do it properly?

-Eventually, I'm going to be

-carrying it on me just for safety.

-I don't want to shoot somebody

-I'm not supposed to be shooting.

-For example, 1 October...

-..when we had

-that terrible thing happen here.

-It's happening

-all over the country.

-Northern Nevada schools got shot up.

-I think it's my responsibility

-to take care of myself.

-With everything

-that's going on in society now...

-..and being a single parent

-of a small daughter...

-..I feel it'll be beneficial for me

-to have these skills as a female...

-..to protect myself and my family.

-And that's important to me.

-It feels very comfortable,
