-Over 250 designers get a chance

-to show their clothes...

-..to fashion fans, fellow designers

-and the influential press.

-I'm in London's Holborn to meet

-Hannah-Beth, a model from Llanelli.

-She's in the city

-for London Fashion Week.

-Carmarthen designer

-Jayne Pierson has a fashion show...

-..at the Conde Nast College

-of Fashion & Design.

-Hannah-Beth is one of the models.

-I can see the clothes there.

-A catwalk runway

-has been set up there.

-This is your stage!

-Hannah has been a model since 2010.

-She has done many catwalk shows

-and wedding dress shows.

-But it's her first chance

-to prove herself in London.

-Do you feel under pressure

-to conform to a certain look?

-It is an unfortunate part

-of the fashion industry.

-Because it's all about

-people's looks and image...

-..you are judged anyway.

-Jayne contacted Hannah

-to ask her to take part in the show.

-As a designer, she likes models

-similar to Hannah, who's a size 10.

-Jayne has been fantastic.

-She's also very supportive

-of that kind of life.

-It's not a matter of having to be

-size zero to be on the catwalk.

-The image of the fashion industry

-is that it's fairly cutthroat.

-Would you say that's fair?

-No, to be honest with you.

-The experiences I've had

-over the past three days...

-..have been very positive.

-No-one's been cruel, especially

-about my image or my look.

-While Hannah

-prepares for the big show...

-..I catch up

-with the designer, Jayne Pierson.

-When it comes

-to creating your pieces...

-...and looking

-at the models to wear them...

-..what do you look for

-in a casting, for example?

-I like to have a girl with a lot

-of charisma and presence...

-..and a beautiful, shapely physique

-that looks healthy and dynamic.

-When you design, you wouldn't

-design a piece that's a size zero?

-Absolutely not, no.

-Straight off the catwalk,

-it goes to the press office.

-And we have normal girls

-wearing our stuff.

-According to Jayne,

-the model agencies are to blame...

-..for sending models

-who are too thin.

-We get what we're given, and we

-select from the girls that show up.

-Sometimes, some of the girls

-are very, very thin...

-..in which case

-we don't confirm or cast them.

-Nobody wants to see a girl

-painfully thin, they just look ill.

-Looking at the models, they all look

-very different from one another.

-Having said that, they are thin.

-There's no escaping

-the truth of that.

-The clothes look interesting.

-Personally, I don't get them,

-but who am I to say anything?

-Here we are, the big moment.

-And a mere moment it was.

-After all the preparations,

-the show is over in ten minutes.

-How did you feel

-when you were on the runway?

-I was nervous.

-I didn't expect that many people.

-It's a tick on that bucket list.

-Really good.

-While I'm in London, I meet

-another model from West Wales...

-..trying to make a name for herself.

-Cira Sharp-Taylor

-is considered a plus size model.

-What does that mean

-for someone like her?

-She hails from Ceredigion...

-..but now lives in London

-and works as a full-time model.

-These were on Boohoo, were they?

-Yes, on Boohoo.

-Cira saw a competition

-on Instagram...

-..to win modelling work

-with online clothes retailer Boohoo.

-Over 66,000 people entered,

-but she won.

-Boohoo picked me up straight away

-and I did a photo shoot for them.

-Then I tried for an agency.

-The first one said no

-because I was too short.

-I then went to IMM,

-who signed me immediately.

-She now gets plenty of work

-through agency IMM as a curve model.

-She has also moved to London

-to secure full-time modelling work.

-What do you think

-of the label plus size model?

-I don't think

-that title should exist.

-It should be size zero

-through to what, size 26...

-..not the term plus size.

-This afternoon, I accompany Cira to

-her agency, IMM, to see her at work.

-We'll just go over your card

-and pictures and take measurements.

-We'll do Polaroids of you

-in your attire, then a small video.

-The agency has over 30 years'

-experience in the field...

-..and works with all kinds

-of men and women.

-What does your role entail exactly?

-What does your role entail exactly?

-I look after all the curve models.

-Size 10 plus.

-That's like, curve.

-It's not the natural model type

-that you see on the runway.

-It's girls that have

-a bit more to them.

-People want to see now

-what represents them.

-Campaigns that use people that are

-like real people of all ages.

-People will invest in that rather

-than people they'll never look like.

-What does Paige think

-Are the designers to blame, or the

-agencies, as Jayne Pierson said?

-I know designers blame the agencies

-for sending them size zero models.

-But you blame the designers.

-Who's at fault, is my question.

-I mean, I think, everyone.

-..after she was told

-to get to the bone.

-That's the agent's fault for telling

-these young people to lose weight.

-It's also the powerhouses

-and fashion people's fault.

-In a way, they don't want bigger

-models because of their samples.

-What they create,

-the budget and materials.

-There's blame

-in everyone's court, really.

-But some suffer long-term damage

-because of the pressure to be thin.

-I'm on my way

-to meet Nia Marshalsay-Thomas.

-She has been a model

-for ten years...

-..and recently returned to work

-after having a baby.

-Today, she's having some new photos

-taken for her portfolio.

-You're now a commercial model,

-but you have done catwalk work.

-What was that like?

-The catwalk stuff

-was fairly negative, really.

-I did a launch of wedding dresses.

-It was quite a big company...

-..so I was excited

-that they'd asked me.

-I went up there, got the train home

-and I was crying on the train.

-I just felt

-that I was the biggest girl there.

-I'm a size 10,

-which isn't big at all.

-But I felt massive there.

-You also got a message

-from someone telling you directly...

-..that you had to lose weight.

-Yes.

-I got a message on social media

-asking to represent me.

-I said yes, I was so excited

-and sent them my measurements.

-They were keen to represent me

-but I had to be a genuine size 8...

-..and lose this amount of weight.

-Because he told me that I'd succeed

-just by losing weight...

-..I felt I had to do it

-or never make it in this industry.

-Nia comes from Aberystwyth.

-She invited me to her home...

-..to talk more

-about the pressure to lose weight...

-..and how that

-drove her to extremes.

-I turned to laxative abuse,

-and took laxatives every day...

-..just to lose weight.

-Once my body

-had got used to taking one...

-..it didn't work any longer,

-so I'd take more and more.

-I lived at home at the time.

-I'd considered

-forcing myself to vomit and so on.

-But my family would have noticed.

-I could do this on the sly.

-Taking a tablet

-without anyone knowing.

-After her body

-became so used to laxatives...

-..she's now dependent on them

-to go to the toilet.

-Eventually,

-I had to go to the doctor.

-Now, I have to take prescription

-laxatives twice daily, every day.

-Have you got them?

-Have you got them?

-Yes, they're here.

-I just mix this up

-with water every day.

-It tastes horrendous.

-It says orange, but it doesn't

-taste anything like orange.

-You mix the powder with water...

-..twice a day.

-I caused this myself.

-It's my own fault.

-I had no idea that taking

-laxatives could be so harmful.

-Nia says that she faces this

-for the rest of her life.

-It's really embarrassing.

-Your body is totally amazing,

-it does everything for you.

-But I've broken my body, in a way...

-..by forcing it to work in a way

-it was never meant to function.

-I'm disappointed that I did it,

-really disappointed.

-Nia has now given up catwalk

-modelling for commercial work.

-She says that she feels

-more at home there.

-Once I found commercial agencies,

-I think I was happy.

-I used to not drink water.

-Since I've been with the commercial

-agencies, that's all gone.

-They've seen my photos

-and my measurements.

-They know exactly

-what they're getting.

-..to look at the brave steps

-Since last September,

-France has led the way...

-..in trying to improve

-conditions for models.

-I've come to Paris Fashion Week...

-..on a day when the fashion world

-in France faces a huge change.

-A new law has come into force...

-..requiring the phrase

-photographie retouchee...

-..to appear below any photograph

-that has been altered in anyway.

-Photoshopped photographs.

-The bill was passed in 2015...

-..alongside a law requiring models

-to show a medical certificate...

-..confirming they are healthy enough

-to work in the industry.

-That bill became law in May 2017.

-But two leading fashion industry

-groups have also introduced changes.

-LVMH and Kering

-own such big names...

-..as Alexander McQueen,

-Stella McCartney and Louis Vuitton.

-They have introduced a new charter

-banning the use of size zero models.

-I spend the afternoon

-with Parisian fashion fans...

-..outside one of the top shows

-to gauge their opinions.

-Tonight's Louis Vuitton show

-is in the pyramid itself.

-But I'm going to be outside,

-where people are now gathering...

-..to ask them about these changes

-to the fashion industry...

-..and its image here in France.

-What do you think

-of Kering and LVMH's new charter...

-..about models who are too thin?

-I think it's a good thing.

-It will create

-another image of fashion.

-The modelling world is hard anyway.

-This shows that fashion is starting

-to look at different bodies.

-It'll be an improvement.

-On the one hand, it's a good thing.

-It's not good for models to be thin.

-I have friends who are models.

-Apples are all they eat.

-But as for wearing clothes...

-..I totally agree

-they look better on thinner bodies.

-I'm now going to meet Rosie Nelson,

-a model currently working in Paris.

-Back in the UK, she's campaigning

-for a law and strict regulations...

-..to protect models

-from having to be too thin.

-I'm about to find out

-what exactly she does.

-Rosie moved to London

-from Australia aged 20...

-..to embark on a career as a model.

-I went to visit agencies,

-a typical thing that models do.

-A lot said I was either too fat

-or too old, when I was 20 years old.

-One particular agency

-said they'd like to take me on...

-..but that I had to lose

-a bit of weight.

-I lost weight for them,

-about 10 kilos or 20 pounds.

-I lost two inches

-around my hips and my waist.

-I went back and was told

-that I was making good progress.

-But they wanted me down to the bone.

-To think they could be

-asking that of girls or boys...

-..much younger than I am,

-it completely broke my heart.

-After that experience, Rosie

-started a petition in Britain...

-..for a law to protect models

-from having to be too thin.

-It now has

-almost 150,000 signatures.

-But the experience hasn't stopped

-her from working as a model.

-Being super thin

-isn't the way forward.

-The agency I'm with now has

-a healthier vision for the industry.

-I wish all the agencies

-would be like that.

-With her petition and the publicity

-for the French law...

-..she's confident that the fashion

-industry will change for the better.

-Without it, we're going the way

-of anorexia and eating disorders...

-..and promoting that as a luxurious

-way to be, and that's wrong.

-France has implemented

-their legislation.

-It'd be great for the UK to follow.

-But what about

-the designers of the future?

-Do they welcome such changes?

-I'm heading to

-the International Fashion Academy...

-..to meet Jean-Marc Chauve,

-its artistic director.

-I also hope to speak

-to some of his students.

-As the designers of the future...

-..I want to hear their opinions

-about these changes.

-What's your opinion

-of Kering and LVMH's charter?

-It's very interesting.

-Yes, it's fairly new and ambiguous.

-On a global level,

-it's a good thing...

-..because it bans sizes 4 and 6,

-which are both very thin.

-But what is a little awkward is that

-it lays down some kind of rules...

-..about what is normal

-for women and what isn't.

-There are young women

-with such figures naturally.

-We seem to be telling them they're

-not normal, which is awkward.

-Anorexia affects 30,000

-to 40,000 people in France...

-..with 90% of them female.

-But Jean-Marc feels

-that another problem...

-..causes more distress

-than anorexia.

-Anorexia is a serious problem...

-..but it affects far fewer people

-than obesity.

-We shouldn't distort

-our idea of beauty...

-..so that obesity is accepted,

-because we know how bad it is.

-Afterwards, he introduces me

-to some of his students.

-But are they glad to see

-the fashion industry changing?

-What do you think of the charter?

-Is it a good idea or not?

-I think it's a good idea because

-most models are in their teens.

-I don't think they should

-be forced to be too thin...

-..or to be a particular size.

-I think it's a good thing...

-..because many young girls

-want to look like models.

-They forget that it's unnatural.

-It's not attractive to be too thin.

-But do the Welsh models want

-to see these changes in Britain?

-I could never go to a size zero.

-It wouldn't be natural for my body.

-to improve the situation?

-It's good that they are,

-but everyone needs to do it.

-A couple may have done this...

-..but some still strongly believe

-in using very thin models.

-There is still pressure to be

-perfect in the fashion industry.

-Models need to look good

-to sell the clothes.

-But what is that ideal image?

-What's important for Nia is that

-models are happy with their bodies.

-Knowing what you know now...

-..and having been through

-what you have...

-..what would you tell

-the younger Nia?

-I'd tell her that she was stupid

-to even consider doing what I did.

-I've destroyed my body, in a way.

-You must be happy in your own skin,

-because you are who you are.

-I've realized that now.

-It's unfortunate and disappointing

-that it took me so long...

-..that I can find work

-and be happy as I am.
