Hello, and tonight Inside Out is at Market Harborough in Leicestershire. | :00:03. | :00:10.
Losing the plot the allotment holders digging in to try to keep | :00:10. | :00:13.
theirs. This is happening all over the | :00:13. | :00:19.
country, how many other people are The heavy price we pay for heavy | :00:19. | :00:26.
drinking. SINGING: He's a lucky man! | :00:26. | :00:29.
They lose their job, lose their house, and I have many patients | :00:29. | :00:39.
And Nottingham's on the musical map, so can this band hit the right | :00:39. | :00:49.
:00:49. | :01:05. | ||
Allotments have never been more popular. Waiting lists in some | :01:05. | :01:08.
parts of the East Midlands have hundreds of green fingered | :01:08. | :01:10.
gardeners desperate to get their hands dirty. With spaces few and | :01:10. | :01:13.
far between, passionate allotment holders are more determined than | :01:13. | :01:17.
ever not to lose the plot. I've been meeting the people who stood | :01:18. | :01:27.
their ground to try to keep the It meant everything to me. | :01:27. | :01:32.
Absolutely everything. It was a place I could go to. You could be | :01:32. | :01:37.
anywhere, it was like a little oasis. | :01:37. | :01:40.
It is not only me, you know, because I am coming towards the end | :01:41. | :01:46.
of my life, I am nearly 70. But it is for the future. Allotments are | :01:47. | :01:50.
people's pride and joy. They stir up strong emotions, | :01:50. | :01:54.
especially when things go wrong. This is happening all over the | :01:55. | :01:58.
country, how many other people are going to be put through this? | :01:58. | :02:01.
They have done everything possible to get us off this site. We are | :02:01. | :02:11.
:02:11. | :02:15. | ||
Have you got all the paperwork? Jane and Gary Wells are coming back | :02:15. | :02:17.
to Roper Avenue allotments at Heanor in Derbyshire a for the | :02:17. | :02:20.
first time since March 2011. No cameras, thank you. You're not | :02:21. | :02:25.
allowed on. Today, though, they will not be | :02:25. | :02:32.
It has taken a court order for Gary to be allowed on site to clear | :02:32. | :02:40.
their positions and dig up everything the crew here. -- clear | :02:40. | :02:49.
The glass has been moved out of the green house, I have noticed. | :02:49. | :02:53.
Under the court order, Jane is not allowed on site. She has to wait | :02:53. | :02:56.
for news outside. I have not got any beds or anything to remove off | :02:56. | :02:59.
the site because it has all gone. Within minutes, the police arrive, | :02:59. | :03:06.
and not for the first time. looks like the members of the | :03:06. | :03:10.
allotment society, when we came on, were not happy that we were here, | :03:10. | :03:14.
although we have every right to be here. So you are just removing what | :03:14. | :03:22.
Back in 2011, the Wells were evicted by the allotment committee | :03:22. | :03:28.
they used to run after claims that other tenants had made complaints. | :03:28. | :03:31.
Landlord Heanor and Lascoe Council said in their view there were no | :03:31. | :03:33.
issues of real substance and hoped individual differences could be | :03:33. | :03:42.
resolved. Despite that, the committee went ahead with the | :03:42. | :03:44.
eviction. Insisting they had done nothing wrong, the Wells went back | :03:44. | :03:49.
to the allotment. We just heard sirens. Police van sirens on a | :03:49. | :03:53.
Sunday afternoon and flashing lights. Bearing in mind, they had | :03:53. | :03:56.
actually locked us in the site at this point, so we could not leave | :03:57. | :04:02.
anyway. The next minute, the police turned up. Which was surreal, | :04:02. | :04:12.
really, we were digging carrots and It is hard to believe now, but this | :04:12. | :04:14.
was an award winning allotment. This was a prestigious award? | :04:14. | :04:18.
yes, it is nationwide. It was down as far as Brecon Beacons, all over | :04:18. | :04:23.
the country. Jane and Gary believe their win widened the gulf between | :04:23. | :04:30.
Just before we won the competition, we had had some issues with a | :04:30. | :04:35.
couple. Once we had won, we did not celebrate at the site that we had | :04:35. | :04:45.
:04:45. | :04:45. | ||
won. There was nothing. It just Allotment disputes are not new, but | :04:45. | :04:48.
with 100,000 people on waiting lists, tenants are now more | :04:48. | :04:58.
:04:58. | :05:00. | ||
determined than ever to keep their I was a bit surprised about the | :05:00. | :05:03.
emotions on allotments, because I thought, it is just an allotment, | :05:03. | :05:13.
:05:13. | :05:14. | ||
but actually I was wrong, because Mo Cooper is an allotment historian | :05:14. | :05:16.
at St Annes in Nottingham, the oldest detached Victorian gardens | :05:16. | :05:26.
We talk about a house being a castle. Well, your garden is your | :05:26. | :05:29.
estate, and there is almost like a deep-rooted feeling of connection | :05:29. | :05:31.
with earth, connection with the land, connection with the seasons | :05:32. | :05:40.
Over on the other side of Nottingham, perhaps the longest | :05:40. | :05:46.
running allotment dispute in the country began back in 2000. | :05:46. | :05:51.
This is the only opening we have to access our allotment. | :05:51. | :05:55.
You lead the way and I will follow you down. | :05:55. | :05:57.
At Blenheim Lane in Bulwell, these allotment holders have also found | :05:58. | :06:06.
themselves short boat. -- short boat of. Now the only way in is | :06:06. | :06:12.
through a hole in the hedge. They are no strangers to controversy. | :06:12. | :06:15.
Raleigh's plans to relocate a new assembly plant were also thwarted. | :06:15. | :06:19.
Allotment holders hosted a judicial review... Plot holders here were | :06:19. | :06:22.
blamed for the bike maker, Raleigh, pulling out of a deal with the City | :06:22. | :06:26.
Council to relocate its Nottingham factory to this site in Buwell. Now | :06:26. | :06:29.
the council has plans for a multi- million pound energy park. | :06:29. | :06:32.
Some people would say you were standing in the way of progress, | :06:32. | :06:37.
you know. You stopped the Raleigh site coming here all those years | :06:37. | :06:40.
ago and you were refusing to go, you are standing in the way of | :06:40. | :06:43.
progress. Is it progress, really? If you cast | :06:43. | :06:46.
your mind back to the 1960s, there was something like 25 allotment | :06:46. | :06:56.
:06:56. | :06:56. | ||
sites surrounding Bullwell. They How does it make you feel, when you | :06:56. | :07:01.
come up here and see it like this? It is heartbreaking. It is land, | :07:01. | :07:04.
good growing land, going to waste, when you have 400 people waiting | :07:04. | :07:10.
for an allotment. They could come up here with their families and | :07:10. | :07:15.
enjoy it, have a good day out, grow their own food. | :07:15. | :07:19.
All the other allotment holders have moved on. | :07:19. | :07:22.
You may be offered another plot, but you have invested 20 years of | :07:22. | :07:27.
your life in getting the soil right. So it's not just the shed or the | :07:27. | :07:31.
greenhouse, or those sort of things, it is actually what you have put | :07:31. | :07:34.
into the ground that is important. So it is a real worry when gardens | :07:34. | :07:44.
:07:44. | :07:45. | ||
get taken back for development. Jack Henton was a miner for 42 | :07:46. | :07:50.
years. Now in his eighties, his health is not big but he is still | :07:50. | :07:53.
passionate about growing his own. I have been growing my own stuff, | :07:53. | :07:58.
fresh radishes, lettuces, tomatoes, beans, all nice and fresh. Cabbages, | :07:58. | :08:06.
yes, lovely. They have done everything possible | :08:06. | :08:10.
to get us off this site, and we are determined to stay and fight for | :08:10. | :08:18.
Arthur Martin knows all about the fight. When his council at Eastwood | :08:18. | :08:21.
in Nottinghamshire decided he was not fit enough to dig his plot any | :08:21. | :08:27.
more, this allotment dispute made headlines around the world. | :08:27. | :08:31.
It really put a lump here, really, to see that so many people were so | :08:31. | :08:41.
:08:41. | :08:43. | ||
involved in seeing I was treated The council backed down, and for | :08:43. | :08:49.
Arthur standing his ground was worth it. He later left when the | :08:49. | :08:54.
time was right for him. It is my decision, I have made the decision, | :08:54. | :08:59.
nothing to do with the council. That is what makes me feel happy to | :08:59. | :09:08.
Back at Bulwell, Trevor Rose has not been so lucky. Last year, | :09:08. | :09:11.
Nottingham City Council took him to court to prove their ownership of | :09:11. | :09:17.
the land. He was banned from going back and fined 3,000. Afterwards, | :09:17. | :09:26.
When I went back with the Deputy City Council leader, the bulldozers | :09:26. | :09:33.
had already been busy. I am delighted it has been resolved, | :09:33. | :09:36.
because we are now talking to people intending to develop and put | :09:36. | :09:41.
jobs on the site. That is what is needed, more than anything. | :09:41. | :09:44.
Do you feel anything for the allotment holders who held out for | :09:44. | :09:47.
so long? Very little, actually. I don't | :09:47. | :09:50.
think they were considering the rest of the community, and when I | :09:50. | :09:52.
look at the fact the other allotment holders have been | :09:52. | :09:55.
extremely sensible, they have been helpful and they have better | :09:55. | :10:02.
The Roper Avenue Allotment Committee declined our invitation | :10:02. | :10:06.
to take part in this film. At a recent court hearing, Jane and Gary | :10:06. | :10:11.
Wells were denied an appeal, but are still fighting their eviction. | :10:11. | :10:14.
I wish I'd never won the competition, because I feel that | :10:14. | :10:18.
was the turning-point of all the trouble. Not everyone is going to | :10:18. | :10:28.
:10:28. | :10:32. | ||
get on an allotment ever, but we Next tonight the hidden cost of | :10:32. | :10:35.
alcohol, seen so publicly last week with those pictures of Paul | :10:35. | :10:39.
Gascoigne. A government consultation on the damage done by | :10:39. | :10:43.
excessive drinking has just finished. It is a problem few care | :10:43. | :10:47.
to admit they have but it can be life changing, and not just for the | :10:47. | :10:51.
drinkers. Tony Roe has been to see some of those affected who aren't | :10:51. | :11:00.
This is how it starts - binge drinking on our streets has led to | :11:00. | :11:02.
East Midlands Ambulance Service teaming up with the police to deal | :11:02. | :11:11.
with drink casualties from a There can be a point where binge | :11:11. | :11:18.
drinking leads to dependency on When people become dependent, they | :11:18. | :11:28.
:11:28. | :11:37. | ||
The simple reason that I drink is because I am lonely. And I have not | :11:37. | :11:42.
got the support and help that I need. I think alcohol is the only | :11:42. | :11:45.
way out. Behind every alcoholic is a reason | :11:45. | :11:50.
why they started. If you walk around town, you see | :11:50. | :11:55.
these people that are drunk, people look at them like they are scum. | :11:55. | :11:58.
They're not, they're people that have lost their way and they need | :11:58. | :12:05.
help, support and love to get back The marriage fails, which causes | :12:05. | :12:08.
them to have more time on their hands, they drink more, they lose | :12:08. | :12:11.
their job, they lose their house, and I have many patients that have | :12:11. | :12:19.
gone from riches to rags. And then back up to riches again - it does | :12:19. | :12:22.
not have to be negative. Friday night in Leicester. One paramedic | :12:23. | :12:31.
and one police officer are teamed up. A punch has floored someone | :12:31. | :12:40.
near the clock tower. The victim's drunk, his head is bleeding onto | :12:40. | :12:43.
the pavement. Last year, they treated 500 drunks without the need | :12:43. | :12:50.
to go to hospital, saving We've got the idea of young people | :12:50. | :12:53.
out in the city centres falling over, collapsed, spread-eagled on | :12:53. | :12:56.
the street, and we can be all disgusted about it, but actually | :12:56. | :12:59.
most of the binge-drinking that happens in this country is at home | :12:59. | :13:09.
:13:09. | :13:22. | ||
$:/STARTFEED. My daughter had been drinking for four or five years. We | :13:22. | :13:29.
tried everything to get help for her. She would go in and pay | :13:29. | :13:34.
forehead. When she got her money on a Friday it was all going to the | :13:34. | :13:40.
shop. She did not care about anything else other than in getting | :13:40. | :13:47.
that drink. By the time you are 26 you are able to drink larger | :13:47. | :13:52.
amounts and begin to get in tolerance to alcohol. You need more | :13:52. | :14:00.
to get the same affect. I had to drink because I was so lonely. | :14:00. | :14:06.
knew it was wrong, very wrong, it was just problems I had been deep | :14:06. | :14:14.
area I was living, the neighbours, it just all built up. This could | :14:14. | :14:20.
happen to any of us, anyone who is watching out. You are happily | :14:20. | :14:24.
married and something happens to your partner, how are you going to | :14:24. | :14:34.
:14:34. | :14:35. | ||
react to that? We just do not know. Alcohol reduces the effects of | :14:36. | :14:42.
anxiety and helps people to sleep. We should not be using it for that | :14:42. | :14:51.
but it can help in the short term. This man is drinking nine litres of | :14:51. | :15:01.
:15:01. | :15:02. | ||
cider per day. He has done well to get off of it. It is bad news. I | :15:02. | :15:08.
have lost friends. I do not want to lose any more. I need support. That | :15:09. | :15:18.
is what I need. I cannot do this by myself. I was not paying macro my | :15:18. | :15:23.
bells, I was not looking after myself, I was not washing. My | :15:23. | :15:28.
daughter had to stay with her dad because she could not wake me up | :15:28. | :15:37.
one day. She went to stay with her dad. In 2005 she died. Three days | :15:37. | :15:44.
before her 33rd birthday. She left behind three gorgeous kids. One is | :15:44. | :15:50.
severely disabled because of the alcohol. She cannot hear, see, walk, | :15:50. | :16:00.
talk, eat. This man had been dialling 999 from phone boxes. He | :16:00. | :16:07.
said he had lost his keys. They could smell alcohol. He was drunk. | :16:07. | :16:15.
He did need help but not from an emergency ambulance. You do have a | :16:15. | :16:20.
duty of care. You cannot let someone just walk off the ambulance | :16:20. | :16:27.
if they are going to get into trouble. It is one of the coldest | :16:27. | :16:33.
nights of the year. Last night I had to wrap myself up. I have got | :16:33. | :16:39.
no heating. I cannot afford to put the heating on. I have got no gas | :16:39. | :16:44.
or cooker. When you need alcohol you do not have money to spend on | :16:44. | :16:51.
heating. I am an alcoholic. I admit it. If I do not have a drink I will | :16:51. | :17:00.
have affect. Degas at his flat has been cut off. I'd turn the iron on | :17:00. | :17:10.
:17:10. | :17:13. | ||
was so cold but I cannot afford to put my gas on. Set is easy to get | :17:13. | :17:18.
credit from the shops that give it out. The alcohol had rotted by | :17:18. | :17:25.
stomach. They are past Kian. They do not realise they want to stop | :17:25. | :17:32.
because it is just a way of life to them. The beginning of the end. | :17:32. | :17:38.
end is a terrible death. You would not wish an alcoholic's death. A | :17:38. | :17:44.
build-up of fluid around deliver. I have seen people crime blood, blood | :17:44. | :17:54.
:17:54. | :18:00. | ||
coming down from their eyes. -- thriving blood. -- crying. I went | :18:00. | :18:04.
to get help from a doctor three years ago and he told me to get out | :18:04. | :18:09.
of the surgery because there were ill people we're waiting to be seen. | :18:09. | :18:15.
That just made me go home and drink more. There was nothing I could do. | :18:15. | :18:20.
This woman has set up a support group providing hot food, clothes | :18:21. | :18:28.
and toys for affected families. Her ambition is to have an based in | :18:28. | :18:35.
Loughborough. We are trying to gain trust so that when we do find a | :18:35. | :18:44.
place, and be well, maybe we can start to make a difference. One of | :18:44. | :18:54.
:18:54. | :18:55. | ||
the people Carroll has helped his and 80 who has come off the drink. | :18:55. | :19:05.
:19:05. | :19:07. | ||
-- Anita. I have been off the drink for a year now. She was helped by a | :19:07. | :19:13.
letter her 12-year-old doctor wrote to her. I used to think that the | :19:13. | :19:19.
alcohol was more important than me. I cried myself to sleep most nights | :19:19. | :19:24.
I was so scared. When you had been drinking and I could not wake you | :19:24. | :19:30.
up I was so scared, I thought you had died. I know other people who | :19:30. | :19:36.
have gone through the same thing as me. I hope it would help other mums | :19:36. | :19:44.
not to go back to it. This woman is determined to help others, it seems | :19:44. | :19:51.
to be a way to cope with her loss. At the minute I do not feel like | :19:51. | :19:56.
anything is getting done, nothing is getting changed. Something has | :19:56. | :20:06.
:20:06. | :20:07. | ||
got to change. Scott drinks less than he used to. He has hopes for | :20:07. | :20:14.
the future. I am only 39. It is that young age. I would like to | :20:14. | :20:21.
find a partner. Make sure that I could provide for my partner and my | :20:21. | :20:31.
:20:31. | :20:33. | ||
child. Our thanks to everyone for sharing their experiences. Finally | :20:33. | :20:40.
tonight, 2012 was a great ear for music in Nottingham. A young man | :20:40. | :20:44.
from here went straight into the charts at number one with his debut | :20:44. | :20:49.
album. Another band have had fantastic reviews but find it is | :20:49. | :20:59.
:20:59. | :21:02. | ||
another thing getting their music The rise of Jake but it has been | :21:02. | :21:12.
:21:12. | :21:16. | ||
rapid. -- Jake Bugg. His first album entered the charts at number | :21:16. | :21:21.
one last year. His record Dale came at a time we were filming with | :21:21. | :21:29.
another Nottingham band. They had already released two critically | :21:29. | :21:37.
acclaimed albums, here they are recording their third. In some ways | :21:37. | :21:41.
it is a fantasy time to make music because the technology is so | :21:41. | :21:51.
:21:51. | :21:51. | ||
accessible. You are able to pick up recording equipment so easily. | :21:51. | :21:57.
need more promotion really. The main thing is getting the music out | :21:57. | :22:03.
there. Getting reviews in the press is great but it doesn't really, | :22:03. | :22:11.
that is not it. You do not just get a review and you have made it. The | :22:11. | :22:21.
:22:21. | :22:25. | ||
only way you can get in is by being on a record label. Go back over 30 | :22:25. | :22:32.
years and the story is the same. Four lads from Mansfield. Physical | :22:32. | :22:41.
success for their band did not lead to commercial riches. Today, the | :22:41. | :22:46.
love of music is still there. They have reformed and still play | :22:46. | :22:56.

successful gigs. We play around school holidays and Bonfire Night. | :22:58. | :23:08.

It is not a living. It was never It is summer 2011, this band have | :23:20. | :23:30.

been cared by Belle and Sebastian who have asked them to support them | :23:34. | :23:43.
in one gig. It is so much bigger than I remembered it to be! Fine! | :23:43. | :23:49.
The teaching assistant on keyboards cuts a holiday short to make it. | :23:49. | :23:54.
They also picked up advice from a band to have been in the business | :23:54. | :24:02.
for 15 years. Everybody has got all these different tools like Twitter | :24:02. | :24:10.
and Facebook. You can do one thing and it can be everywhere. You just | :24:10. | :24:16.
do not need to take a load of money off a record company and be in debt | :24:16. | :24:22.
for ever to pay it back again. I think it will be good. Back in | :24:22. | :24:26.
Nottingham and another recording session which eventually leads to | :24:26. | :24:32.
something they put out themselves as a single. It is a measure of | :24:32. | :24:40.
what the band is appreciated like when a Hollywood actor puts forward | :24:40. | :24:45.
his voice. The release a limited number on white final as well as at | :24:45. | :24:51.
download. In order to be a success they need to get their music heard | :24:51. | :25:01.
:25:01. | :25:05. | ||
by real people. Success seems as far away as ever. December 2012 we | :25:05. | :25:14.
bring the band who supported Duran Duran in 1981 back to the venue. | :25:14. | :25:21.
have been basically working, raising a family. I have stayed in | :25:21. | :25:30.
music but when our band split up I hooked up with others, Dido. I | :25:30. | :25:40.
wrote some singles for her. I took at different route and got into the | :25:40. | :25:48.
wine business. I basically decided to settle down and get a job living | :25:48. | :25:54.
a normal life. I got a job working in a music shop and now I own my | :25:54. | :26:04.
own music shop. That is what I do now. We are all 51, all born within | :26:04. | :26:10.
a few miles and a few months of each other. What was relevant to as | :26:10. | :26:18.
30 years ago would not necessarily be relevant to us now. To actually | :26:18. | :26:26.
record an album to be an album is something to do. We could do a good | :26:26. | :26:31.
album now. The journalists who grew up with us are now in quite high | :26:31. | :26:35.
positions so we might well get favourable reviews which would be | :26:35. | :26:45.
:26:45. | :26:49. | ||
This banned from West Retford had some commercial success last year. | :26:49. | :26:59.
They toured a lot and got into the charts with their debut record. | :26:59. | :27:08.
There is a structured approach. I would rather be in my position. I | :27:08. | :27:13.
like to have time in the studio to make music, you cannot just go into | :27:13. | :27:20.
a studio and record an album in 10 days. I like to develop and work on | :27:20. | :27:29.
ideas. These bands meet, it is obvious that apart from geography, | :27:29. | :27:36.
they are linked by a love of music. We just carry on making music and | :27:36. | :27:46.
:27:46. | :27:46. | ||
see what happens. You have to try to forge your own path. Have you | :27:46. | :27:51.
got any advice? The thing that seems to me that you have of got in | :27:51. | :28:00.
common is a love of music. What is your advice? Don't sign anything! | :28:00. | :28:04.
They are still waiting and hoping to release their third album, | :28:04. | :28:13.
hoping again for critical recognition. The hope for money | :28:13. | :28:19.
from their labour of love, it would be deserved. I am sure we all wish | :28:19. | :28:25.
them the best of luck. You can e- mail your stories and follow me on | :28:25. | :28:35. |
