Tonight, the chip and PIN scam ` we reveal how easy it is | :00:07. | :00:09.
If you're making a transacthon, and you're still being ripped off, | :00:10. | :00:14.
and your details are still being taken, | :00:15. | :00:16.
there is absolutely nothing you c`n do. | :00:17. | :00:18.
We track down the man supplying machhnes that | :00:19. | :00:21.
Are you making a lot of money out of it? | :00:22. | :00:27.
The dangers of sugar ` radio presenter James Whale goes | :00:28. | :00:31.
Sometimes we don't realise that the ordinary things we buy dvery day | :00:32. | :00:36.
..to find out why sugar is so bad for us. | :00:37. | :00:42.
And fighting the invaders that are adding millions | :00:43. | :00:44.
Revealing the stories that matter closer | :00:45. | :00:47.
to home ` that's Inside Out for the East of Dngland. | :00:48. | :00:59.
Thanks for joining me for the new series of Insidd Out. | :01:00. | :01:03.
Now, over the next nine weeks, I'll be bringing you the stories that | :01:04. | :01:06.
matter to us here in the East of England. | :01:07. | :01:08.
First, do you remember when chip and pin machines replaced | :01:09. | :01:11.
in shops, we were told it'd help to protect us from fratd, but | :01:12. | :01:17.
an Inside Out investigation has revealed that | :01:18. | :01:18.
adapted equipment to steal our bank details and our money. | :01:19. | :01:26.
For the last nine months, wd've been working undercover to get to a | :01:27. | :01:29.
In Jonathan Gibson's exclusive report ` we confront him. | :01:30. | :01:36.
It's Friday night, and for lost of us, the weekend has started. | :01:37. | :01:39.
If, like me, you have never got cash, a card comes in handy. | :01:40. | :01:53.
For ten years now, we have `ll been using these ` chip and pin lachines. | :01:54. | :02:00.
And the place I've come for dinner is no different. | :02:01. | :02:06.
Remember when we used to sign for things in shops? | :02:07. | :02:08.
The banks told us chip and pin would be much safer. | :02:09. | :02:14.
Her card details were stolen at a garage. | :02:15. | :02:20.
The card was cloned using a machine that cloned it, and also thdre was a | :02:21. | :02:25.
video camera setup to record the PIN number being put into the m`chine. | :02:26. | :02:36.
So they got two lots of information, and ?400 was taken out | :02:37. | :02:39.
on a couple of occasions in Malaysia from our bank account. | :02:40. | :02:41.
But a quick look online shows there are many more victims. | :02:42. | :02:49.
There are the good people on there, like the innocent victims, | :02:50. | :02:55.
I am talking to a man who knows all about stolen numbers. | :02:56. | :03:00.
Funnily enough, I haven't mentioned I'm a journalist. | :03:01. | :03:15.
He thinks I own a restaurant with card customers. | :03:16. | :03:17.
But I need to gain his trust, and that is taking months. | :03:18. | :03:20.
But one day, he tells me a parcel is in the post. | :03:21. | :03:26.
I have spent months gaining this criminal's | :03:27. | :03:32.
confidence, but he still dods not trust me completely. | :03:33. | :03:36.
He has finally agreed to ch`t, but he is banking on staying | :03:37. | :03:39.
He tells me the machine he has sent me remembers people's card numbers. | :03:40. | :03:53.
Once you swipe it, the data has been saved | :03:54. | :04:01.
from the first swipe, and the PIN is stored and now that is there | :04:02. | :04:04.
That is everything he needs to steal people's PINs. | :04:05. | :04:06.
Do it like the restaurant's receipt books, because it is customhsable. | :04:07. | :04:10.
He has told me to put this drror message on the receipt | :04:11. | :04:13.
so that customers will think the machine is not working. | :04:14. | :04:26.
their real payment. What I now need to work out is how to put | :04:27. | :04:30.
found the answer. Pay`as`yot`go debit cards ` | :04:31. | :04:33.
You can only spend what you put on them. | :04:34. | :04:37.
I need him to think they belong to my customers. | :04:38. | :04:41.
He has told me I will need to download the data using somd | :04:42. | :04:46.
A couple more connections, and we are ready to rock. | :04:47. | :04:54.
Is it downloading? It is receiving stuff. | :04:55. | :05:00.
OK, when it is done downloading send me the file when it is done. | :05:01. | :05:03.
He has just e`mailed me through the rest of the card numbers, | :05:04. | :05:08.
In a couple of minutes, he has everything he needs to make | :05:09. | :05:16.
exact copies of all of thesd cards, which can then use cash points. | :05:17. | :05:25.
He's done that already ` tile and time again. | :05:26. | :05:32.
Her card was cloned at a garage. | :05:33. | :05:35.
What does she think about the way chip and pin fraud has moved on | :05:36. | :05:39.
If you are making a transaction and still being ripped off, and your | :05:40. | :05:42.
details are still being takdn, it is worrying because there is nothing as | :05:43. | :05:46.
But if Lucy is surprised, what will the banks think? | :05:47. | :05:56.
I think the encouraging thing is that these frauds are very rare | :05:57. | :05:59.
We have only seen one recent incident, | :06:00. | :06:02.
and we're seeing convictions in the Old Bailey the moment for that. | :06:03. | :06:05.
We know the existing advice is to protect your PIN. | :06:06. | :06:10.
With something like that, there is no point. | :06:11. | :06:12.
It is the device itself that takes the PIN number. | :06:13. | :06:16.
The first reassurance to give everybody when it comes to this type | :06:17. | :06:19.
of fraud, and it is very rare, is that even if you are | :06:20. | :06:23.
the victim of it, you will receive a full refund of all of your losses. | :06:24. | :06:27.
With this type of fraud, in common with others as well, | :06:28. | :06:30.
we always advise consumers to check their statements. | :06:31. | :06:35.
All of the cards are in my name so I can check what is happdning to | :06:36. | :06:43.
They have never left my wallet, but according to the transaction | :06:44. | :06:48.
history, they have been emptied of cash in the Philippines. | :06:49. | :06:54.
So either he is stealing my money, or someone he knows is. | :06:55. | :06:57.
But he has also sent me a second machine, | :06:58. | :06:59.
He has taken cash out in the Philippines, | :07:00. | :07:06.
I have also sent money to C`nada for the cables he posted. | :07:07. | :07:12.
He could be on either side of the world. | :07:13. | :07:16.
How about I tell him I have broken the machine? | :07:17. | :07:30.
I'm hoping he will ask me to send it for repair, and if he trusts me | :07:31. | :07:34.
He has taken the bait, telling me to send it to | :07:35. | :07:40.
But this is one parcel I plan to deliver by hand. | :07:41. | :07:46.
I'm heading out of town, 25 miles along the freeway to Pickerhng. | :07:47. | :08:07.
Is the guy that we have been given the address | :08:08. | :08:12.
That we've been talking to for, what, months now? | :08:13. | :08:16.
But there is only one way to be sure, and that means me plaxing | :08:17. | :08:25.
postie. Yes, we're happy to help at TRN Couriers. | :08:26. | :08:28.
So the accent needs work, btt I m hoping the uniform will shine. | :08:29. | :08:33.
We have a tracker inside the machine, and a secret c`mera. | :08:34. | :08:36.
Yep, it is Marcus Montague, and he signs | :08:37. | :08:55.
No, I can't accept if I don't know about it. | :08:56. | :09:18.
I would like to ask you a couple of questions about your involvement | :09:19. | :09:29.
We have been sending deliveries to your address, and you have | :09:30. | :09:41.
Don't run us over. We are asking questions. | :09:42. | :09:49.
Who are you actually involvdd with, then? | :09:50. | :09:52.
Are you making a lot of mondy out of it? | :09:53. | :10:07.
Raised a few more questions, perhaps. | :10:08. | :10:13.
But whatever the case, he w`s not very keen to hang around, w`s he? | :10:14. | :10:22.
I think that's probably the last we will see of him, at least for now. | :10:23. | :10:27.
Can I have a couple of pounds of plums, and some apples as well? | :10:28. | :10:30.
Back home, I am still in the market for answers. | :10:31. | :10:33.
But VeriFone, which makes the machines, | :10:34. | :10:36.
VeriFone says the fraud is not a result of tampering with VeriFone | :10:37. | :10:52.
devices, and requires the collusion of two crimin`ls. | :10:53. | :10:57.
The company says it takes the security | :10:58. | :10:59.
It works with authorities to uncover fraud. | :11:00. | :11:08.
If you have been the victim of chip and PIN fraud or | :11:09. | :11:21.
if there is something else xou think we should be looking | :11:22. | :11:24.
You're watching Inside Out from the East of England. | :11:25. | :11:29.
Coming up, the invaders addhng millions of pounds to water bills. | :11:30. | :11:32.
Eventually they will choke the plant. | :11:33. | :11:34.
It will be a couple of weeks and we would have to stop production. | :11:35. | :11:44.
Now we know we're supposed to have our five a day. | :11:45. | :11:46.
and we know there's a guidance on how much | :11:47. | :11:50.
Do you know how much you eat, and how much you should havd? | :11:51. | :11:55.
Well radio presenter James Whale from BBC Essex spent | :11:56. | :11:58.
the summer trying to go sug`r`free, to see what the problems ard. | :11:59. | :12:04.
I have made a career out of speaking my mind. | :12:05. | :12:23.
Sometimes with an unsparing sharp tongue. | :12:24. | :12:25.
What I do have, though, is a rather sweet tooth. | :12:26. | :12:27.
Some people are starter and main but I'm very much main and desert. | :12:28. | :12:33.
You're going to be helping le through my month of no sugar. | :12:34. | :12:38.
I'm giving up sugar to try to live within the suggested 35 grals a day. | :12:39. | :12:44.
I have found these breakfast biscuit things quite nice. | :12:45. | :12:56.
You need to take it in contdxt with your overall sugar int`ke. | :12:57. | :13:02.
Food is deemed high sugar whth more than 22.5 grams of 100 grams. | :13:03. | :13:06.
Today is the day I'm going to find out how much sugar H | :13:07. | :13:15.
Last time I had a blood test and did not know the results I found | :13:16. | :13:26.
I'm sure that will not happdn today but just bear with me. | :13:27. | :13:32.
I was pleasantly surprised with your blood test results. | :13:33. | :13:41.
I found you have the heart of a 57`year`old. | :13:42. | :13:44.
We measured your glucose levels and there is no sign of diabetes | :13:45. | :13:52.
So not having sugar in your diet for a month. | :13:53. | :14:04.
I need some relaxation when I'm not on radio or television. | :14:05. | :14:07.
Normally I go and play Robin Hood which is what I'm doing tod`y. | :14:08. | :14:11.
I'm pretty good at hitting the target. | :14:12. | :14:17.
But this government target of 35 grams of sugar per dax may | :14:18. | :14:21.
The government proposals based on guidelines from the World Health | :14:22. | :14:28.
Organisation said we should halve our intake of added sugar. | :14:29. | :14:34.
The target is no more than 4% of our energy intake. | :14:35. | :14:38.
25 grams a day for a woman and 35 grams a day for men. | :14:39. | :14:43.
Which I could pretty much blow with a low`fat yoghurt and cereal bar. | :14:44. | :14:57.
I have to tell you, I am managing OK. | :14:58. | :15:02.
But I am finding it really quite difficult. | :15:03. | :15:10.
Going into shops and trying to read the flipping | :15:11. | :15:12.
Finding food without added sugar is not easy. | :15:13. | :15:21.
We expect it in cakes and biscuits but it looks | :15:22. | :15:23.
Is it really as one newspapdr called it, the new tobacco? | :15:24. | :15:33.
And does it really need to be demonised by the health polhce? | :15:34. | :15:40.
The big issue for us is the added sugars. | :15:41. | :15:43.
Teaspoons and teaspoons adddd to every conceivable processed food. | :15:44. | :15:48.
You would be surprised just how much sugar is hidden. | :15:49. | :15:52.
And particularly not just in deserts and sweet things, | :15:53. | :15:56.
I tell you what, I have got what I would normally get, baked bdans | :15:57. | :16:27.
And the great breakfast biscuit I start my day with. | :16:28. | :16:37.
But do you know, it is so confusing, the labels, as far | :16:38. | :16:39.
I'm going to have to get Nicole to come shopping with me. | :16:40. | :16:45.
I will get a dietician and come back and see what hs what. | :16:46. | :16:57.
What I would not give for chocolate bar. | :16:58. | :17:09.
Sugar is added as an ingredhent for different reasons. | :17:10. | :17:21.
For flavour and texture and colour and to preserve food, to reduce | :17:22. | :17:25.
And sugar is an important ingredient for a number of products. | :17:26. | :17:35.
If you think about biscuits and cakes and meringues. | :17:36. | :17:40.
As you would expect, the industry is defending the use of added sugar. | :17:41. | :17:49.
So if it is going to be in there, at least tell us how much. | :17:50. | :17:54.
And tell us clearly with bold, honest, unambiguous labels. | :17:55. | :18:02.
I might come in and think getting one | :18:03. | :18:03.
Until you look at the packaging it is difficult to say. | :18:04. | :18:10.
If you had three of those that would give you 34.6 gr`ms of | :18:11. | :18:18.
you 50%. If we look at a taco, because this would be bread, here we | :18:19. | :18:31.
The point is if I was to actually go through my shopping | :18:32. | :18:38.
in the way Nicole and I havd done today, I probably would havd | :18:39. | :18:41.
shopping. It needs to make ht a little easier to decipher. | :18:42. | :18:49.
I'm not saying anything I'm looking at is bad, it depends on if you want | :18:50. | :18:53.
We could all reduce sugar in our diet and sometimes wd do not | :18:54. | :19:00.
realise that the ordinary things we buy every day have sugar in them. | :19:01. | :19:04.
I'm just about to go and get my blood results. | :19:05. | :19:12.
In fact I reckon I have already had the test. | :19:13. | :19:18.
Even though you were not at risk in the first place, | :19:19. | :19:32.
It's suggests the fact you took sugar out of your diet gives you | :19:33. | :19:47.
Who knows what would happen if I always had a sugar free diet? | :19:48. | :19:53.
Somehow, though, I do not think it is going to happen. | :19:54. | :19:55.
The most difficult thing about thinking | :19:56. | :19:57.
about what you're eating is actually thinking about what you're dating. | :19:58. | :19:59.
As long as you do not do thd bad things all the time, as long as you | :20:00. | :20:04.
do not take too much sugar, I do not take sugar now in my tea or coffee. | :20:05. | :20:08.
As long as you only do things in moderation, enjoy it. | :20:09. | :20:16.
I love this part of the country But there are some creatures ushng the | :20:17. | :20:44.
waters were not very welcomd. An idyllic spot in the middle | :20:45. | :20:47.
of the countryside. But don't let the appearancd | :20:48. | :21:04.
of these calm waters fool you. Beneath the surface thousands | :21:05. | :21:07.
and thousands It's an invasive species th`t kills | :21:08. | :21:09.
eco`systems and costs millions Grafham Water is a reservoir owned | :21:10. | :21:17.
by Anglian water, but there are Dr David Aldridge is a profdssor | :21:18. | :21:27.
of zoology and specialises We have hundreds if not thotsands of | :21:28. | :21:53.
zebra mussels. Not native to Britain. They come from Eastern | :21:54. | :21:58.
Europe. They arrived 200 ye`rs ago. They attach to solid surfacds. They | :21:59. | :22:05.
have attached to some bricks in the reservoir. And they attach with a | :22:06. | :22:13.
beard just like Marine muscles. They form thick crust so you get high | :22:14. | :22:21.
densities. Including native freshwater creatures. They can cause | :22:22. | :22:44.
those to die. This giant filter is out of service for maintenance. If I | :22:45. | :22:50.
shine this light inside you can see clusters of zebra mussels that have | :22:51. | :22:53.
made it their home. Unless they are dealt with they could shut the whole | :22:54. | :22:58.
place down. The problem is not unique. Here at the treatment plant | :22:59. | :23:05.
in Rutland Anglian Water have had to build special equipment to deal with | :23:06. | :23:10.
the extent of the zebra mussels invasion. This is the final filter | :23:11. | :23:15.
stage of drinking water for around one million homes. If the zdbra | :23:16. | :23:21.
mussels take old here it cotld be a real problem. `` take old. Just | :23:22. | :23:29.
outside there is evidence of the invaders on the ground. Simon | :23:30. | :23:33.
Banbury is the supply managdr at the Rutland site. They live inshde water | :23:34. | :23:41.
pipes that come up from the reservoir. They end up in this | :23:42. | :23:50.
concrete cube. This is the trap where they come out of suspdnsion | :23:51. | :23:55.
and end up in the bottom of this concrete cube. This costs around | :23:56. | :24:05.
half ?1 million. How does it work? Water comes into the cube and we | :24:06. | :24:10.
slow down the flow. They drop out of suspension because they are heavy | :24:11. | :24:15.
and settle in the bottom. Thousands in here? Could well be. I'm not | :24:16. | :24:29.
going in there! Turn in the same direction as a tap. Go nice and | :24:30. | :24:40.
slowly. We do this twice a week And if you do not? Eventually the cube | :24:41. | :24:46.
would become full and would choke the plant and the plant would have | :24:47. | :24:50.
to stop. How long before th`t happened? A couple of weeks. Why do | :24:51. | :25:05.
they thrive in our part in the country? They like a lot of algae in | :25:06. | :25:12.
the water and many reservoirs have a lot of nutrients. The algae is | :25:13. | :25:19.
abundant so the zebra mussels can have a feast. They can also spread | :25:20. | :25:23.
quickly. A single muscle can produce around 1 million lava. Other | :25:24. | :25:30.
waterways of Britain are together. So they can use the canal sxstems | :25:31. | :25:34.
rather like the motorway network. That allows them to spread from East | :25:35. | :25:39.
to West and North to South. So they really do proliferate. Is there | :25:40. | :25:45.
anything we can do to stop the march of the zebra mussels? | :25:46. | :25:51.
In the US there are many calpaigns to try to halt the spread. This one | :25:52. | :25:55.
is from Texas. It is illegal to possess or | :25:56. | :26:01.
transport zebra mussels on ` boat knowingly or unknowingly. The | :26:02. | :26:06.
Environment Agency says it hs all about making people aware of how | :26:07. | :26:09.
easily these invasive specids can be moved around. They help everyone who | :26:10. | :26:15.
uses lakes and reservoirs in the UK will be responsible and washed down | :26:16. | :26:18.
boats and fishing tackle to slow down the spread of zebra mussels. | :26:19. | :26:28.
They are the same kind of w`shed down points here as in parts of | :26:29. | :26:34.
America. And they make sure that people use them here at the | :26:35. | :26:38.
reservoir. But it is not actually enforceable in this country. In the | :26:39. | :26:43.
meantime Doctor David Aldridge from Cambridge University is working on a | :26:44. | :26:46.
plan to wipe them out using science. He has found a nattral | :26:47. | :26:50.
substance to kill them which is harmless to humans. Called bio | :26:51. | :27:00.
bullet. We take a product top thick to the zebra mussels and we coated | :27:01. | :27:04.
in a coating just the right size and shape for them to filter out the | :27:05. | :27:08.
water. This one of the poisoned pill and it is a tasty treat without | :27:09. | :27:12.
realising that inside is solething that will kill them. They do die | :27:13. | :27:16.
straightaway. And we enginedred the guy `` the bio bullet so anxthing | :27:17. | :27:19.
the muscles do not eat just dissolves in water. The acthve | :27:20. | :27:25.
ingredient that we use is totally safe for drinking water. It is very | :27:26. | :27:31.
specific to the zebra mussels. What does it look like? A very fhne | :27:32. | :27:37.
powder. We are always keeping an eye out for the big test that is next to | :27:38. | :27:42.
arrive in Britain. A recent study has shown one of the biggest threats | :27:43. | :27:49.
on our doorstep is something called the naughty cousin of the zdbra | :27:50. | :27:54.
mussels. In the Netherlands it is causing a bigger environmental | :27:55. | :27:59.
nuisance than a zebra mussels. From next year there will be a ndw | :28:00. | :28:02.
European regulation coming hnto force which means across will have | :28:03. | :28:05.
to be much stricter about transporting invasive specids from | :28:06. | :28:08.
one area to another. Hopefully this will slow down the spread of these | :28:09. | :28:16.
invaders before it is too l`te. It just goes to show we can all do our | :28:17. | :28:20.
bit to stop the spread of invasive species. That is all for thhs week. | :28:21. | :28:26.
If there's something you thhnk we should be doing a story abott. | :28:27. | :28:29.
