Cumbria ? for this week s inside Out Chris | :00:00. | :00:00.
In the next half hour, we expose the Tyneside nurse whose | :00:00. | :00:00.
cosmetic treatments left a trail of misery. | :00:07. | :00:09.
This is possibly one of the worst cases we've ever | :00:10. | :00:11.
To have this number of complications at the hands of one | :00:12. | :00:17.
Just what is lurking beneath the green of | :00:18. | :00:30.
Concerns in the north we could be playing a | :00:31. | :00:34.
dangerous game with the future of our children. | :00:35. | :00:36.
Everywhere now, people playing rugby, it is every week | :00:37. | :00:38.
around us and they should look at where they are letting their | :00:39. | :00:41.
children play because the guilt I feel for my son unbelievable. | :00:42. | :00:44.
Family planning for squirrels, a novel way | :00:45. | :00:52.
to keep numbers of the bushy tailed creatures down in North Yorkshire. | :00:53. | :00:55.
The beauty is the grey squirrel would have to eat | :00:56. | :01:03.
I'm Chris Jackson and this is Inside Out. | :01:04. | :01:17.
What if someone gave you a short cut to looking a bit younger? | :01:18. | :01:27.
But we ve been investigating one operator on Tyneside, | :01:28. | :01:32.
whose patients say they were left in pain and unhappy. | :01:33. | :01:34.
What s more she s been helped by one | :01:35. | :01:36.
of our region s leading transplant surgeons. | :01:37. | :01:41.
My boots are quite big ? I might have them reduced. | :01:42. | :02:01.
More and more of us are turning to face-lifts and fillers | :02:02. | :02:08.
It s now a celebrity endorsed industry - worth | :02:09. | :02:11.
Wrinkle-busting injections designed to smooth the years away | :02:12. | :02:15.
Well, that s what Robyn Hassan thought. | :02:16. | :02:23.
When I think about it now, I think how na ve and stupid! | :02:24. | :02:28.
When she put it in this side of me top lip she went ooh, | :02:29. | :02:32.
you re a bleeder and like loads of blood starting coming out. | :02:33. | :02:36.
And then when the swelling went down I was left disfigured and I have | :02:37. | :02:41.
been left with like a constant lump on me lip underneath there. | :02:42. | :02:44.
A year on, she still bears the scares | :02:45. | :02:51.
Like I can constantly feel it on me tooth when I talk. | :02:52. | :02:57.
And the lumps sometimes go white and I can t wear lipstick now either | :02:58. | :03:00.
because it looks like I ve got a cold sore. | :03:01. | :03:04.
Claire Wilde from South Shields ? also practiced under | :03:05. | :03:11.
She s been operating across the North East for seven years | :03:12. | :03:16.
She s even made her very own appearance on reality TV. | :03:17. | :03:19.
Holly, would you really get that done? | :03:20. | :03:22.
But sometimes her brush with the stars has had | :03:23. | :03:28.
Claire Wilde s insurance firm forked out more than ?8,000 | :03:29. | :03:33.
So far, Ms Wilde dissolved six businesses and two years ago | :03:34. | :03:43.
We ve gathered a file of cases - of women who went to Claire Wilde | :03:44. | :03:55.
And got a whole load more than they bargained for. | :03:56. | :04:07.
Linda Mather says she s been left to clear up the mess in many cases. | :04:08. | :04:14.
I first became aware of her seven years ago - when people | :04:15. | :04:20.
came to me and said they d had toxin treatments before | :04:21. | :04:22.
And then as time went on I became aware of people who had gone | :04:23. | :04:30.
for lip-filler who had been left in extreme pain. | :04:31. | :04:35.
And lately there has been some nasty infections that | :04:36. | :04:39.
I have had to deal with - really big swellings and abscesses | :04:40. | :04:42.
What do you think of the way she operates? | :04:43. | :04:47.
I can t even think of words to sum up how I feel. | :04:48. | :04:52.
It is completely unethical and I can t understand how someone | :04:53. | :04:56.
can know they ve harmed somebody and not put that right. | :04:57. | :05:04.
Ashton Collins has set up a government approved company that | :05:05. | :05:07.
This is possibly one of the worst cases we ve seen. | :05:08. | :05:17.
To have this number of complications at the hands of one practitioner | :05:18. | :05:20.
So, Claire Wilde, she's made a load of people unhappy because they say | :05:21. | :05:33.
she's not only botched the job - but in some cases left them | :05:34. | :05:36.
And she's been difficult or impossible to track | :05:37. | :05:39.
So she must be operating outside the low - right? | :05:40. | :05:44.
Three years ago an independent review criticized the absence | :05:45. | :05:52.
of regulation for some cosmetic work. | :05:53. | :05:54.
non-surgical cosmetic procedures regardless of their training, | :05:55. | :05:57.
professional background or qualifications. | :05:58. | :06:10.
But we ve discovered something about Claire Wilde s | :06:11. | :06:12.
Whilst dermal fillers don t require a prescription ? Botulinum toxin ? | :06:13. | :06:16.
And although Claire Wilde s a registered nurse - she needs | :06:17. | :06:21.
a doctor to prescribe on behalf of her clients | :06:22. | :06:23.
It s a prescription for the drug under its brand name AZZALURE - | :06:24. | :06:33.
It's clear this prescription has been tampered with. | :06:34. | :06:43.
You'd think these were two different prescriptions but are they really? | :06:44. | :06:47.
Put a little light on the subject - unless it's a complete | :06:48. | :06:53.
Put a bit of correcting fluid on and change that to a "5". | :06:54. | :07:02.
We ve found more examples of tampering | :07:03. | :07:08.
The fraudulent prescriptions were faxed off to a pharmacy. | :07:09. | :07:10.
There was nothing to stop Claire Wilde using the same | :07:11. | :07:15.
Caroline Phipps, the doctor who issued these prescriptions, told us: | :07:16. | :07:21.
'I was distressed to discover that prescriptions written in good faith | :07:22. | :07:24.
On being informed of this very serious situation I have contacted | :07:25. | :07:30.
the Police and the Nursing and Midwifery Council.' | :07:31. | :07:35.
Dr Phipps stopped working with Claire Wilde in March 2013. | :07:36. | :07:40.
So she found herself a new big name doctor set up | :07:41. | :07:44.
Tanveer Butt is a cardiothoracic transplant surgeon at | :07:45. | :07:54.
For a fee, this eminent doctor was happy to meet Claire s | :07:55. | :07:59.
The question is: when prescribing cosmetic drugs, did Mr Butt adhere | :08:00. | :08:07.
to the standards set by the doctors regulating body - the | :08:08. | :08:10.
The GMC s guidelines say doctors must carry out a physical | :08:11. | :08:15.
But we ve spoken to several people who say that he did | :08:16. | :08:21.
He came round my friend s house with Claire. | :08:22. | :08:26.
He was introduced to me as an observer. | :08:27. | :08:28.
Let s have a look at some of the prescriptions | :08:29. | :08:52.
that Mr Butt signed, which by law should have addresses | :08:53. | :08:55.
There s no hint of an address for the patient and there s | :08:56. | :09:04.
certainly isn t one for the person doing the prescribing. | :09:05. | :09:09.
And we ve discovered that Mr Butt just like this. | :09:10. | :09:19.
to eight times the dose needed for one treatment. | :09:20. | :09:25.
Save Face says that amounts to over a year s supply. | :09:26. | :09:29.
The industry watchdog Save Face says that level of prescribing is very | :09:30. | :09:32.
Only Mr Butt will know ? but it meant that often | :09:33. | :09:36.
People like Yvette from South Shields. | :09:37. | :09:43.
She booked Claire Wilde to come to her house for a Botox treatment. | :09:44. | :09:46.
I had it on the forehead, like your crows feet | :09:47. | :09:49.
It was like tingly and I felt like I had a really bad | :09:50. | :09:54.
She says she didn t see a doctor and there was no prescription | :09:55. | :09:59.
So when you tried to get in touch with her, what happened? | :10:00. | :10:08.
Then I tried to ring her and her phone number was just dead. | :10:09. | :10:12.
Like my face was burning for two weeks and I couldn t | :10:13. | :10:15.
AUTOMATIC MESSAGE: This person s phone is switched off. | :10:16. | :10:24.
She didn t want to talk to us either. | :10:25. | :10:26.
We have made several attempts to ask her to explain herself | :10:27. | :10:29.
but she s steadfastly refused to comment. | :10:30. | :10:30.
Now we know where she is - she is just outside. | :10:31. | :10:38.
but it s just a quick run to her car so when the moment comes | :10:39. | :10:42.
But Claire went straight back indoors as soon | :10:43. | :10:46.
We just wanted to ask you some questions, Claire. | :10:47. | :10:49.
Well that was a very quick in and out of the house. | :10:50. | :10:53.
She is very happy to talk to people about how she can improve their look | :10:54. | :10:57.
but it looks like she doesn t want to talk to me | :10:58. | :10:59.
You could say she is being rather tight-lipped! | :11:00. | :11:08.
But his lawyer wrote to say that Mr Butt was introduced to clients | :11:09. | :11:17.
as a doctor at every appointment and his role explained. | :11:18. | :11:20.
He says he carried out visual examinations in line with GMC | :11:21. | :11:23.
Guidelines and considered detailed medical questionnaires | :11:24. | :11:24.
Mr Butt s lawyer admitted addresses were left off prescriptions, | :11:25. | :11:32.
but says that was quickly rectified even though none of | :11:33. | :11:34.
the many we ve seen - issued over six months - | :11:35. | :11:37.
As for over-prescribing, Mr Butt admits he sometimes | :11:38. | :11:44.
prescribed eight vials, which he says were usually to treat | :11:45. | :11:50.
young men for excessive sweating, when a higher dose would be needed. | :11:51. | :11:52.
Yet all the prescriptions we ve seen were for clients | :11:53. | :11:55.
Mr Butt denies any knowledge of medication being passed | :11:56. | :12:02.
We ll be sending a copy of tonight s programme | :12:03. | :12:07.
It can be a bit grim this time of year. | :12:08. | :12:21.
And wet playing fields could be putting you | :12:22. | :12:23.
Increasingly they are being replaced by | :12:24. | :12:26.
But are these third-generation pitches as they are | :12:27. | :12:37.
Blyth Town under-14 girls are local league champions. | :12:38. | :12:44.
But is what s under their feet - and in the air around them | :12:45. | :12:47.
We've had smoking, asbestosis, thalidomide. | :12:48. | :13:03.
Let us make sure that rubber artificial | :13:04. | :13:05.
pictures are not the next big health scandal. | :13:06. | :13:07.
My mother died of cancer at 41 and I've got a child that I've | :13:08. | :13:10.
had to watch suffered through it, it is horrible. | :13:11. | :13:12.
On nearly 3,000 pitches around the country, real grass has been | :13:13. | :13:16.
On nearly every one of these new pitches, thousands of ground-up | :13:17. | :13:30.
tyres are used to provide a soft base beneath the fibre. | :13:31. | :13:33.
It s bouncy, weatherproof, good for running on and gets rid | :13:34. | :13:35.
Lewis Maguire has been mad on football since he was eight. | :13:36. | :13:53.
For most of that time he s been playing as a goalkeeper | :13:54. | :13:56.
Three years ago he was told he had cancer. | :13:57. | :14:06.
Now 19, Lewis has been treated twice - for Hodgkins Lymphoma, | :14:07. | :14:09.
His family believes it could have been caused by his long | :14:10. | :14:16.
All these pellets, in your face diving for a ball. | :14:17. | :14:27.
He even began playing football again. | :14:28. | :14:43.
Lewis s dad was the boss of a health authority in Cumbria. | :14:44. | :14:52.
He left his job - determined to investigate | :14:53. | :14:54.
Nigel discovered that American soccer coach Amy Griffin has been | :14:55. | :15:02.
compiling a list of US athletes who ve used 3G pitches and been | :15:03. | :15:05.
My list has now grown to 237, all over the | :15:06. | :15:10.
The most concerning thing is 186 are soccer players. | :15:11. | :15:21.
You have a son who is a goalkeeper who has been | :15:22. | :15:25.
I have not been affected in the way you have. | :15:26. | :15:39.
When Lewis was on the ward, earlier in | :15:40. | :15:41.
the year three people who were regular players on 3G | :15:42. | :15:43.
pictures, two of them are goalkeepers and the | :15:44. | :15:46.
It is anecdotal but it makes you sit up and think, | :15:47. | :15:52.
that is interesting, what is that all about? | :15:53. | :15:57.
There s no doubt that tyre rubber contains toxic materials. | :15:58. | :16:00.
Now that doesn t prove that 3G pitches cause cancer. | :16:01. | :16:12.
There have been a number of international studies | :16:13. | :16:13.
And none of them says there s a likely link | :16:14. | :16:17.
between exposure to artificial pitches, and illness. | :16:18. | :16:19.
It says there are too many gaps in the recent research and that more | :16:20. | :16:26.
We've come to Holland, where they already have 2,000 3G pitches. | :16:27. | :16:37.
Here too, the government says there's not enough evidence that | :16:38. | :16:40.
But in Amsterdam, it hasn t stopped them taking action. | :16:41. | :16:43.
It was a recent Dutch TV documentary which prompted | :16:44. | :16:45.
A number of clubs immediately decided to stop using - | :16:46. | :16:49.
People did not know children were playing on crushed tyres so | :16:50. | :17:10.
clubs decided to close their pitches. | :17:11. | :17:11.
We got the news on the Wednesday and on the Saturday 30 | :17:12. | :17:14.
Within weeks, the Institute of Public Health sampled rubber | :17:15. | :17:17.
from a hundred pitches, and concluded: | :17:18. | :17:24.
"the effect on human health is virtually negligible." | :17:25. | :17:26.
But the City of Amsterdam has decided it isn t going to build any | :17:27. | :17:33.
Of course there is still a danger for the environment because | :17:34. | :17:44.
For some parents, that s not enough, it's an own goal. | :17:45. | :18:06.
One group took matters into their own hands. | :18:07. | :18:08.
On a pitch nearby, in the dead of night, they snuck out | :18:09. | :18:11.
here and began vacuuming up the rubber. | :18:12. | :18:16.
It's only symbolic of course, we got some attention on | :18:17. | :18:19.
social media but we just wanted people to know we should do | :18:20. | :18:22.
You can see it here, it's in the bushes, the birds | :18:23. | :18:32.
It is in the socks and shoes, in the washing machine. | :18:33. | :18:38.
I tell him that it is not problem and it is OK | :18:39. | :18:47.
So the government report hasn't ended the arguments. | :18:48. | :18:53.
An hour down the road, a senior toxicologist is worried | :18:54. | :18:55.
It is not taking into account those specifications of | :18:56. | :19:00.
If I had children, I wouldn't want them to be exercising but put | :19:01. | :19:12.
pressure on the football club to replace these fields in the near | :19:13. | :19:15.
future for normal grass which is more innocent and safer | :19:16. | :19:17.
At another amateur club here in Amsterdam, they won't have | :19:18. | :19:29.
They're moving premises - and their new pitches | :19:30. | :19:33.
will have a more expensive - cork base instead. | :19:34. | :19:36.
Maybe it is quite a financial cost but you should ask | :19:37. | :19:39.
Is that not a far greater costs than replacing every one now? | :19:40. | :19:51.
Back home, the number of pitches keeps on growing. | :19:52. | :19:54.
Servicing the rapidly-expanding demand are manufacturers | :19:55. | :19:55.
The industry's trade body told us it's considering a new agreement | :19:56. | :20:07.
on rubber chemicals that ll provide tougher standards than currently | :20:08. | :20:09.
The Football Association are squarely behind 3G pitches. | :20:10. | :20:15.
Not only do they say they're safe, but they have plans to roll out | :20:16. | :20:19.
at least 200 more of them in the next few years. | :20:20. | :20:21.
So what are sports players, children - and their parents - | :20:22. | :20:24.
to do about the conflicting claims over 3G? | :20:25. | :20:26.
Our independent research would suggest | :20:27. | :20:27.
I have a son and I would be happy for him to play on a | :20:28. | :20:32.
We are concerned about the safety of every individual. | :20:33. | :20:39.
and not look to change that in any shape or form. What is the | :20:40. | :20:47.
government seem to support players, children and their parents? | :20:48. | :20:48.
Sport England told us it takes the concerns very seriously | :20:49. | :20:51.
and that it s currently contributing evidence to an EU-wide study, | :20:52. | :20:54.
For the second time, Lewis Maguire has beaten his Lymphoma, | :20:55. | :20:58.
He ll need regular checkups for years - | :20:59. | :21:03.
I love playing football but you have to ask | :21:04. | :21:14.
the question, do I want my child playing in these pitches? | :21:15. | :21:17.
If you think they are safe, go ahead but I | :21:18. | :21:19.
don't think they are and I don't think it's a good idea. | :21:20. | :21:22.
All the official advice on 3G pitches suggests there's no | :21:23. | :21:25.
But as we've seen, there are nagging doubts in some people's minds | :21:26. | :21:34.
Perhaps it s a debate we re yet to have in the UK. | :21:35. | :21:37.
I think there's a real danger we could be | :21:38. | :21:39.
conducting an industrial scale experiment on the health and | :21:40. | :21:42.
For me, that should not be allowed to happen. | :21:43. | :21:50.
Would you be happy for your kids or grandchildren to play in | :21:51. | :21:53.
They are cute and clever but to many they are a pest. | :21:54. | :22:11.
The only way to control their numbers is to cull | :22:12. | :22:14.
But could contraception be the answer? | :22:15. | :22:21.
But under the leafy canopy, deadly aliens are on the loose. | :22:22. | :22:35.
grey squirrel is a very clever mammal and has outsmarted man for | :22:36. | :22:44.
decades. They are also wiping out our native reds. We could lose our | :22:45. | :22:53.
entire population here. Chemical controls have so far afield. Killing | :22:54. | :22:57.
remains the only viable method of keeping numbers down. The chaps out | :22:58. | :23:04.
most mornings trying to shoot them. This could all be about to change. | :23:05. | :23:10.
Victorian aristocrats get the blame for introducing Grey | :23:11. | :23:14.
squirrels to this country, bringing them in from America | :23:15. | :23:16.
The animals adapted rather too well, and numbers swelled. | :23:17. | :23:19.
There are now around three million of them in the UK, | :23:20. | :23:22.
One of their first crimes was to squeeze out Britain s | :23:23. | :23:25.
There are now only about 15,000 left in England, | :23:26. | :23:30.
But there is one small corner of the Yorkshire Dales where red | :23:31. | :23:36.
They are very bold, they started very shy | :23:37. | :23:48.
but they work out they are the boss and they can do with a | :23:49. | :23:51.
They are inspiring in terms of our British | :23:52. | :23:55.
We need to carry out this work unfortunately to reduce the | :23:56. | :23:59.
This work involves killing any grey squirrel that comes near. | :24:00. | :24:05.
If the Wensleydale reds came in contact with a grey, | :24:06. | :24:08.
they could pick up the fatal squirrel pox virus. | :24:09. | :24:18.
The Grey squirrel is officially an alien invasive species. | :24:19. | :24:20.
It IS legal to kill them, in a humane way. | :24:21. | :24:23.
It s against the low to release one into the wild. | :24:24. | :24:25.
Some people argue that it s unrealistic to expect reds | :24:26. | :24:27.
So why not let reds and greys co-exist? | :24:28. | :24:31.
All animals are welcome at Whitby Wildlife Sanctuary, | :24:32. | :24:33.
It is often blamed for the red squirrel decline. | :24:34. | :25:11.
To blame greys - it's nothing on human activity. | :25:12. | :25:26.
I, don t think killing greys is the answer. | :25:27. | :25:28.
There are two issues here ? it s not just the threat to reds, | :25:29. | :25:31.
grey squirrels are attacking our native woodland. | :25:32. | :25:33.
Not like this with chainsaws, but by chipping away at tree bark. | :25:34. | :25:36.
A nightmare for places like the Yorkshire Arboretum, | :25:37. | :25:38.
near Castle Howard, home to a priceless collection | :25:39. | :25:40.
At the Yorkshire Arboretum, near Castle Howard in North Yorkshire, | :25:41. | :25:43.
they manage a priceless reference collection of tree species. | :25:44. | :25:45.
How much of a problem are grey squirrels? Because us a lot of | :25:46. | :25:52.
problems, killing things and damaging the trees. This is a | :25:53. | :25:55.
classic example how they have stripped the bark in this section, | :25:56. | :26:04.
up and down the tree. This is a completely wrecked tree. | :26:05. | :26:08.
Squirrels have been wreaking woodland havoc for years. | :26:09. | :26:10.
In the 1950s a despairing government organised a mass | :26:11. | :26:13.
Farmers were paid a shilling a tail to rid the countryside | :26:14. | :26:16.
The squirrels responded by breeding in bigger numbers. | :26:17. | :26:19.
They now cause an estimated ?17 million a year of damage, | :26:20. | :26:22.
and are threatening the future of our woodland. | :26:23. | :26:31.
Most mornings, the chaps are out to shoot the squirrels. It must be | :26:32. | :26:45.
difficult for someone who loves nature to kill a species? We would | :26:46. | :26:51.
prefer not to sort some other form of control would be fantastic. | :26:52. | :27:00.
For years scientists have been trying to perfect a less brutal way | :27:01. | :27:03.
of controlling the grey squirrel population without killing them. | :27:04. | :27:05.
A team at Sheffield University spent most of the 1990s working | :27:06. | :27:09.
Once outside of the lab, it worked well on those | :27:10. | :27:15.
squirrels that picked up the contraceptive laced nuts. | :27:16. | :27:17.
Unfortunately half of them didn t take the bait | :27:18. | :27:19.
It is very expensive to do shooting in trapping, about ?60 a squirrel so | :27:20. | :27:31.
So they have charged another set of scientists, | :27:32. | :27:34.
at the government lab in North Yorkshire, to try again. | :27:35. | :27:37.
And they think they may this time have cracked a way of getting | :27:38. | :27:40.
It would look like this. It would be appeased and going the dispenser. | :27:41. | :27:50.
The beauty in this is that the grey squirrel would have to eat it at the | :27:51. | :27:52.
dispenser. They hope these contraceptive | :27:53. | :27:56.
dispensers could be dotted through our woodlands | :27:57. | :27:58.
within five years. Looking forward, how would it change | :27:59. | :27:59.
squirrel population? I think it would be massive. The | :28:00. | :28:12.
modelling we've done shows we could reduce the breeding population by | :28:13. | :28:17.
about 70% within three years. What would that do to the red? Reds are | :28:18. | :28:23.
very good at coming into grey squirrel areas and you with the | :28:24. | :28:28.
all-new range of reds moving south into Yorkshire. That's enormously | :28:29. | :28:36.
exciting. Who knew? Contraception for squirrels. | :28:37. | :28:39.
We will be transported back in time through a unique North East film | :28:40. | :28:51.
collection which is being preserved for the future. | :28:52. | :28:54.
See you next Monday, till then, goodnight. | :28:55. | :29:00.
