Two car bombs were defused nearby. Now it is time for Reporters. | :00:00. | :00:21.
From here in the world 's newsroom we send correspondence to bring you | :00:22. | :00:26.
the best stories from across the globe. Inside Iran as Persian New | :00:27. | :00:37.
Year and easing of sanctions bring hope for a better life for Iran. We | :00:38. | :00:42.
ask how bright is the country 's future? Fixing problems here is | :00:43. | :00:51.
difficult because it means resolving the decades long strains in | :00:52. | :00:57.
relations with the West. Fukushima 's second silent disaster. We return | :00:58. | :01:01.
to find out that it is no anxiety that is killing people. Is the fear | :01:02. | :01:06.
of radiation now actually turning out to be much more lethal than the | :01:07. | :01:15.
radiation itself? Gavin Hewitt assesses the first year in office of | :01:16. | :01:20.
the Pope. Can he change the Catholic Church? The one thing you notice is | :01:21. | :01:25.
how he works a crowd, almost like a politician. He likes shaking hands | :01:26. | :01:32.
and Smalltalk and as a human touch. Britain's crumbling cliffs. After | :01:33. | :01:38.
the wettest winter on record, Duncan Kennedy asks if the CN storms can be | :01:39. | :01:45.
stopped. And we investigate whether the latest new skiing apps make | :01:46. | :01:54.
people ski too fast. It will tell you where you have been and how far | :01:55. | :01:59.
and, more to the point, how fast you have gone. Prices in Iran of basic | :02:00. | :02:15.
goods have tripled. There is now hoped that, thanks to a landmark | :02:16. | :02:19.
deal reached last November between Western powers and Tehran, though | :02:20. | :02:24.
sanctions may be eased. The BBC does not have these is to report from | :02:25. | :02:32.
Iran. But these two sets in this report from the uranium capital. -- | :02:33. | :02:46.
Lyse Doucet. The markets are full for the Persian New Year. But most | :02:47. | :02:52.
Iranians it is hard to make ends meet. Prices have tripled in some | :02:53. | :02:57.
places. This whole is also a showcase for Iran 's finest products | :02:58. | :03:03.
-the carpets it has always traded with the world. This man's family | :03:04. | :03:09.
has been in the business for nearly 40 years and business has never been | :03:10. | :03:15.
so bad. TRANSLATION: Exports have dropped in recent years, mainly | :03:16. | :03:22.
because of problems with bank and transactions because of sanctions. | :03:23. | :03:25.
We also do not have enough tourists because of recession in Europe | :03:26. | :03:32.
itself. Iranians are facing problems experienced by people in many places | :03:33. | :03:39.
-high prices, low employment. Fixing the problems here is harder because | :03:40. | :03:43.
they are rooted in something much more fundamental and it means | :03:44. | :03:46.
resolving the decades long strains in relations with the West. But | :03:47. | :03:53.
things are starting to change. Even tourists are beginning to return. | :03:54. | :04:00.
Were you worried about coming? After the elections and the new president | :04:01. | :04:07.
we think it is safer to come here. They say welcome to Iran and have a | :04:08. | :04:13.
nice day and things like that. In wealthy north Tehran, there are all | :04:14. | :04:20.
the symbols that the city is not completely cut off. Western labels | :04:21. | :04:25.
can be found here. Some Iranians even got richer under sanctions. | :04:26. | :04:29.
There is a growing confidence that Iran is open for business. We have | :04:30. | :04:39.
prime ministers coming every week, followed by trade delegations. This | :04:40. | :04:42.
is what the business community looks for -they want to see that the | :04:43. | :04:48.
country is taking the man is seriously. The US embassy here is a | :04:49. | :04:54.
museum, a monument to the decades of hostility. Iran is accused of trying | :04:55. | :05:01.
to export its revolution to other parts of the Middle East and | :05:02. | :05:04.
beyond. But it sees itself differently. The sense of itself | :05:05. | :05:12.
will not change but Iran is now trying to find its rightful place in | :05:13. | :05:19.
the world, not against it. It was one of the world 's worst | :05:20. | :05:24.
man-made disasters. But three years after the Fukushima nuclear leak, | :05:25. | :05:28.
doctors are warning of a second, silent calamity. The number of | :05:29. | :05:32.
people who have died since the disaster now exceeds the total | :05:33. | :05:36.
killed in the initial earthquake and tsunami. Nobody has died from the | :05:37. | :05:41.
radiation itself. Many deaths have been linked to suicide, depression, | :05:42. | :05:48.
and illness. Some have simply lost the will to live. | :05:49. | :05:57.
This is the dead zone. In the little towns around Fukushima, time stands | :05:58. | :06:02.
still. The destruction brought by the earthquake is unprepared. -- not | :06:03. | :06:10.
repaired. What has happened to the people who once lived here? Forced | :06:11. | :06:16.
to flee the radiation, forced to abandon all they own. Three years | :06:17. | :06:26.
after the disaster, there are serious questions about its | :06:27. | :06:29.
aftermath that need to be answered. Has the the threat to health been | :06:30. | :06:46.
overstated? Is the fear of radiation turning out to be more lethal than | :06:47. | :06:52.
the radiation itself? At a private clinic 60 kilometres from the plant, | :06:53. | :06:58.
this ploy is having his thyroid examined. His mother is scared. | :06:59. | :07:04.
Since the disaster, 33 children here have been found with thyroid cancer. | :07:05. | :07:10.
She worries that he could be next. TRANSLATION: At Chernobyl children | :07:11. | :07:16.
were diagnosed many years after the disaster. Children here may be fine | :07:17. | :07:21.
now, but if there is risk I want to find out as soon as I can. Child | :07:22. | :07:27.
cancer experts say that Fukushima cannot be compared with Chernobyl. | :07:28. | :07:32.
The 33 cases discovered so far are not connected to the disaster. | :07:33. | :07:38.
TRANSLATION: The radiation release from Fukushima was much less than | :07:39. | :07:43.
Chernobyl. Children here got a much smaller dose. But once you start | :07:44. | :07:48.
using sensitive equipment to check for thyroid cancer, you will find | :07:49. | :07:52.
more cases. That is why we are seeing an increase, not because of | :07:53. | :07:59.
the disaster. But the Fukushima disaster is taking lives. This woman | :08:00. | :08:06.
has come to pray at her father 's grave. His health collapsed after he | :08:07. | :08:13.
was forced to abandon his farm and his animals. Within two years, he | :08:14. | :08:19.
was dead. TRANSLATION: I blame the power company for his death. They | :08:20. | :08:25.
took his dreams, his hope, his land and scattered his family. Nothing | :08:26. | :08:32.
will bring those back. Nobody has died from radiation in Fukushima. | :08:33. | :08:37.
But, unable to return home and rebuild, a growing number of people | :08:38. | :08:43.
are dying from anxiety, suicide, and losing the will to live. | :08:44. | :08:53.
You will not have heard of this condition but it affects 2 million | :08:54. | :08:57.
women around the world, mainly in sub-Saharan Africa and Asia it is | :08:58. | :09:15.
called obstetric fistula. It is widespread, after childbirth, but | :09:16. | :09:25.
easy to treat. Here in rural Uganda, the nearest | :09:26. | :09:30.
hospital is around two hours away. That is why most women in this | :09:31. | :09:33.
community give birth at home and some lose their babies as a result. | :09:34. | :09:42.
Like this woman, she was 16 when she went into labour here. After three | :09:43. | :09:46.
days she was taken to hospital. She gave birth to a little girl who died | :09:47. | :09:54.
soon after delivery. She tells me that she was cursed and that is why | :09:55. | :10:05.
her baby died. The delivery caused a rupture in her bladder, making her | :10:06. | :10:09.
leaky Europe constantly. The condition is as obstetric fistula. | :10:10. | :10:15.
2000 women in Uganda suffer with the condition. For some of their bowels | :10:16. | :10:21.
are affected too, making them doubly affected. Now a rare opportunity to | :10:22. | :10:28.
repair the damage. Doctors from Britain are providing free surgery | :10:29. | :10:32.
at this hospital. It usually costs $700. TRANSLATION: I was very lively | :10:33. | :10:43.
before. Now I cannot mix with people. When I pass somebody, they | :10:44. | :10:49.
tell me that I stink. Even when I take a bath, the smell does not | :10:50. | :10:56.
leave. I stay at home. To raise awareness, the missionaries who run | :10:57. | :11:00.
the hospital travelled to villages and talk about family planning and | :11:01. | :11:03.
giving birth safely. Most of the women here will have given birth at | :11:04. | :11:11.
home. There helped by older women with little or no medical experience | :11:12. | :11:14.
but the doctor is telling people to save money to get the woman to | :11:15. | :11:19.
hospital so she can give birth safely. She says that could be the | :11:20. | :11:21.
difference between life and death for the woman and her unborn child. | :11:22. | :11:29.
The morning of the surgery, and she is nervous. This is complex surgery. | :11:30. | :11:39.
The hope is that Doctor Duffy and his team will train Uganda doctors | :11:40. | :11:42.
here so they can eventually take over. We do for camps per year and | :11:43. | :11:48.
we have a local surgeon here who can do the simple surgery. She is | :11:49. | :11:56.
starting to take them on but not as much surgery happens after we have | :11:57. | :12:02.
gone as we like. The operation was a success. After a short recovery | :12:03. | :12:06.
time, the mother hopes she can go back to school and get a life back. | :12:07. | :12:14.
Many more women are left waiting, facing a lifetime of rejection, | :12:15. | :12:15.
shame, and humiliation. Please pray for me, the message from | :12:16. | :12:30.
Pope Francis this week. He did not mark the occasion officially, in | :12:31. | :12:35.
fact, he went on a spiritual retreat. Italian polls give him the | :12:36. | :12:38.
highest popularity rating of any recent pontiff. But, among his | :12:39. | :12:44.
conservative cardinals, his plans to reform the Church have ruffled | :12:45. | :12:48.
feathers. Our correspondent reports on a year of what has been called | :12:49. | :12:56.
the front is a fact. -- Francis. The freeze that moves above the crowd, | :12:57. | :13:01.
is the face that magazines want on the front cover. -- of the face. A | :13:02. | :13:09.
visit to an Italian coastal town, the Pope arrives in a modest Ford | :13:10. | :13:14.
Focus. It has become his trademark, the easy smile. A man comfortable | :13:15. | :13:20.
with ordinary people. One thing you noticed about him is how he works | :13:21. | :13:26.
the crowd, almost like a politician. He enjoys shaking hands | :13:27. | :13:30.
and he likes Smalltalk. The human touch. He says the trading the Pope | :13:31. | :13:37.
as a Superman seems offensive. He says he is a normal --small talk. | :13:38. | :13:42.
Person but visitors to roam talk of a Francis affect. -- Rome. We | :13:43. | :13:50.
connect because he is at one with the people, not quite the person | :13:51. | :13:54.
that we don't connect with. And yet, surveys show a huge gap between what | :13:55. | :13:59.
the Church teaches and what many Catholics practice. Life is | :14:00. | :14:05.
different from hundreds of years ago. It does not mean that you | :14:06. | :14:11.
shouldn't be allowed your faith, just because of issues like that. At | :14:12. | :14:17.
the weekly audiences, crowds are three times what they were. Pope | :14:18. | :14:22.
Francis has hinted at greater tolerance over homosexuality. | :14:23. | :14:26.
Question, he said, who am I to judge? Doctrine has not changed, but | :14:27. | :14:33.
there are ripples of a knees across Bishopton cardinals. These are men | :14:34. | :14:39.
who believe the Church is they think they have all the answers from God. | :14:40. | :14:48.
-- the Church is the one true Church and they think. On the issue of | :14:49. | :14:53.
child abuse, Pope Francis drew criticism when he said of the Church | :14:54. | :14:56.
that no one had done more to fight it. But senior figures insist he is | :14:57. | :15:03.
a reformer. What he does in a blatant way is challenge everyone | :15:04. | :15:07.
who says they are Catholic, a follower of Christ, to leave it. He | :15:08. | :15:14.
has seemed at times a radical leader. When he attached huge | :15:15. | :15:18.
salaries as a symptom of greed. -- attack. He says there are too many | :15:19. | :15:24.
small-minded rules. How far will he go to reform Vatican bureaucracy? | :15:25. | :15:32.
The UK's coastline has taken a battering from one storm after | :15:33. | :15:36.
another. Some areas have suffered the equivalent of seven years of | :15:37. | :15:40.
erosion in just two months. The National trust has called for a | :15:41. | :15:45.
rethink of how Britain defends its coastline. It argues that some | :15:46. | :15:49.
places may have to be sacrificed because the sea can no longer be | :15:50. | :15:53.
stopped. -- Trust. Our correspondent has been to Sussex to find out more. | :15:54. | :15:59.
It was only a matter of time before all this, and this, lead to this. -- | :16:00. | :16:14.
led. Birling Gap in Sussex, just one of the places where the gap just got | :16:15. | :16:20.
bigger. Those pictures are spectacular. To give you an idea of | :16:21. | :16:23.
what has gone on here this winter, the National Trust tells us they | :16:24. | :16:27.
have had seven years worth of erosion. In only two months. The | :16:28. | :16:33.
cliff collapse has made the spot even more popular with visitors. It | :16:34. | :16:39.
is good for a photo, less good for safety. The BBC has been shown this | :16:40. | :16:43.
map, revealing it is just one of 70 sites around Britain identified as | :16:44. | :16:48.
in critical danger of erosion. They range from Cayton Bay and Orford | :16:49. | :16:53.
Ness in the east, to Birling Gap and win brewery in the south, to form be | :16:54. | :16:59.
in the west and we look in. This is places where sea defences may no | :17:00. | :17:07.
longer be an option. Woolacoombe. Canon Britain cope with this | :17:08. | :17:14.
erosion? -- Canon. We need to work with nature. We need to assure that | :17:15. | :17:18.
we can adapt to change, rather than think about fighting it. -- can. The | :17:19. | :17:25.
National Trust says that winter has been a wake-up call. Whether it is | :17:26. | :17:29.
here in Hastings, or here in Bournemouth, Britain's cliffs have | :17:30. | :17:34.
been crumbling. It is not just through rave and wind power. | :17:35. | :17:40.
Brand-new research at Southampton University has revealed | :17:41. | :17:42.
unprecedented amounts of water has searched off the land, damaging our | :17:43. | :17:50.
coast and histories. -- Coasts. In the last few weeks we have seen | :17:51. | :17:53.
three times the amount of water coming into the Astra that we would | :17:54. | :17:57.
normally see in a wet area. It is not a question of whether it is wet, | :17:58. | :18:00.
it is abnormally wet. It is unprecedented. -- into the estuary. | :18:01. | :18:09.
Old photos show erosion to a live not new. Here is Sussex 100 years | :18:10. | :18:16.
ago. The same spot 20 years later. Finally, now. This winter has | :18:17. | :18:21.
quickened the pace. But you can't put a concrete wall around Britain, | :18:22. | :18:29.
so what do you do? From the cliffs of England to the | :18:30. | :18:33.
French Alps. That was where the racing driver Michael Schumacher hit | :18:34. | :18:37.
his head in December while skiing. He has been in a coma ever since. | :18:38. | :18:42.
His accident provoked debate about the dangers of skiing and a new | :18:43. | :18:46.
craze, ski apps on smart phones measuring how fast we can go. Do | :18:47. | :18:52.
they engage people to ski to fast? Our correspondent has taken to the | :18:53. | :18:57.
slopes to find out. Ski conditions don't get much better than this, but | :18:58. | :19:01.
ski technology is improving all the time. Like the apps for smart | :19:02. | :19:09.
phones, measuring your top speed. Give a competitive edge to a | :19:10. | :19:12.
holidays, but do they encourage us to take too many risks's -- risks? | :19:13. | :19:23.
--our. It works like a GPS in your car, you hit record, put it in your | :19:24. | :19:29.
pocket, and, at the end of the day, it will tell you when, where, and | :19:30. | :19:37.
how fast you have gone. What ever the weather, everyone here is using | :19:38. | :19:44.
them. -- whatever. We share it on Facebook every day. We have been | :19:45. | :19:48.
skiing for eight days and everyday I have posted it on Facebook. Speed | :19:49. | :19:54.
may give a head rush to holidaymakers, but to the ski safety | :19:55. | :19:58.
patrols, it just means headaches. Doctors warned that over the last | :19:59. | :20:02.
ten years, there has been a hike in serious injuries on the slopes, with | :20:03. | :20:08.
more collisions at high-speed. I ask people how fast they are going where | :20:09. | :20:12.
they fall and hurt themselves, and I have noticed over the past month or | :20:13. | :20:15.
so that some people can tell me the exact speed they were going because | :20:16. | :20:22.
they were using the app. We asked one company to respond to the | :20:23. | :20:23.
concerns. They told us: No one understands the thrill of | :20:24. | :20:43.
downhill skiing better than speed world record holder Savio Crusoe. On | :20:44. | :20:51.
the secluded piste, he encourages holidaymakers to bomb down the | :20:52. | :20:54.
slopes, where he crossed the speed, but gives them a warning. -- clocks | :20:55. | :21:02.
the speed. 98.6 kilometres per hour. It is good to do that. But do not do | :21:03. | :21:09.
that anywhere else. Some people say that with the app they've worked | :21:10. | :21:16.
hitting 120 kilometres per hour. But, going that fast on a normal | :21:17. | :21:23.
slope is very dangerous, because if you can't control your skis or if | :21:24. | :21:26.
you hurt someone, you could kill yourself or kill other people. | :21:27. | :21:31.
Perhaps our ski apps will give us a wake-up call. They might make a | :21:32. | :21:40.
slowdown and skied more responsibly. That is all from Reporters for this | :21:41. | :21:43.
week. From me and the reporters, goodbye. | :21:44. | :22:02.
Many of us had a nice day on Saturday. There was quite a bit of | :22:03. | :22:10.
sunshine around, across southern areas particularly, including the | :22:11. | :22:16.
Midlands. Wales was nice. Eastern parts of Scotland, here are some of | :22:17. | :22:18.
the temperatures we have | :22:19. | :22:19. |
