Italy with roughly 15 minutes to go. Now on BBC News, it's Reporters. | :00:00. | :00:20.
Hello and welcome to Reporters with me, say NAB Dali, ringing you the | :00:21. | :00:25.
best reports from correspondence around the world. In this week 's | :00:26. | :00:31.
programme: A very effective coup, Jonathan Head travels to the | :00:32. | :00:34.
northern stronghold of Thailand's red shirts and find that opposition | :00:35. | :00:39.
silenced by the military crackdown. What can you do? We have to stop. | :00:40. | :00:48.
Guns and butter, with the former military man in charge as President | :00:49. | :00:52.
of Egypt, our correspondent finds the army is also running grocery | :00:53. | :00:57.
stores and petrol stations. Some say the military is less of a fighting | :00:58. | :01:02.
force, more of a trading company. And, football is fit for the World | :01:03. | :01:08.
Cup, we visit one of only two factories in the world allowed to | :01:09. | :01:13.
supply the tournament in Brazil. `` football Klose darts. It has been | :01:14. | :01:21.
effective crackdown since the military seized power in Thailand, | :01:22. | :01:24.
most members of the former government and leaders of the | :01:25. | :01:28.
redshirt movement in support of it, has signed agreement in political | :01:29. | :01:37.
activity. What of the strongholds of the former government in northern | :01:38. | :01:40.
Thailand? Our correspondent Jonathan Head went to the province of food on | :01:41. | :01:46.
tiny to find out whether there is still a spirit of resistance. | :01:47. | :01:53.
In the hard scrabble Fatherland of Thailand's north`east, redshirt | :01:54. | :01:58.
loyalists have been caught offguard over the military takeover `` | :01:59. | :02:03.
farmland. His life has become entwined with the red shirt course. | :02:04. | :02:08.
He met his wife at their rallies. For all the talk of fighting back, | :02:09. | :02:11.
now the coup has happened, he is unsure what to do. TRANSLATION: For | :02:12. | :02:19.
now, we will wait and watch what they do. We aren't afraid of them. | :02:20. | :02:26.
The soldiers have weapons. Still, there are more of us here in the | :02:27. | :02:30.
north`east than they have in the army. The military is keeping a | :02:31. | :02:37.
close watch on the redshirt here. In one of their strongholds, it has | :02:38. | :02:42.
raided their homes and question their leaders. So far, that has been | :02:43. | :02:48.
enough to stop any real resistance. We have to shut up. This woman used | :02:49. | :02:55.
to run one of the hundreds of local radio stations that mobilised | :02:56. | :03:01.
support since the clue, she has been in hiding, moving from house to | :03:02. | :03:06.
house, afraid of being detained `` since the clue. To most people | :03:07. | :03:09.
accept they have to stop their redshirt activities? They have to, | :03:10. | :03:14.
because the gun is pointed at their head, what can you do? We have to | :03:15. | :03:21.
stop, but we don't want to. `` coup. In village after village, we saw | :03:22. | :03:28.
almost no signs of opposition. I came to this place six months ago | :03:29. | :03:31.
and back then it had declared itself to be a red village. Most homes | :03:32. | :03:37.
proudly displayed posters proclaiming their loyalty to the | :03:38. | :03:39.
government and the party founder, tax and Shinawatra. Today, like much | :03:40. | :03:47.
of the region, it is fearful and silent `` Thaksin. In the end, the | :03:48. | :03:51.
uprising against the coup didn't happen here. They haven't given up. | :03:52. | :03:59.
In their little heart, this man and his wife believing the democracy | :04:00. | :04:02.
they thought they were fighting for and the better life they hoped it | :04:03. | :04:10.
would ring `` hut. `` ring. With the former military man back in charge | :04:11. | :04:14.
at resident of Egypt, it is business as usual. He is the fifth Egyptian | :04:15. | :04:21.
leader to have served in the armed forces. The army continues to | :04:22. | :04:26.
control large swathes of the economy, including shops, petrol | :04:27. | :04:30.
stations and hotels. It even produces a brand of Pasztor. As our | :04:31. | :04:36.
correspondent has been finding out, with al`Sisi in the presidency, the | :04:37. | :04:40.
business interest are expected to grow. On duty in Cairo, safeguarding | :04:41. | :04:48.
the road into the capital. As well as protecting the nation, the | :04:49. | :04:52.
Egyptian army is protecting this, a vast business empire built with | :04:53. | :04:58.
conscript labour. Its commercial interests strap from petrol stations | :04:59. | :05:05.
and shopping mall to hotels and bars `` stretch. Even grocery shops where | :05:06. | :05:09.
you can buy the army's products, including its brand of Pasztor. | :05:10. | :05:15.
Supermarkets like this are just one small part of the army's economic | :05:16. | :05:20.
activity `` pasta. Some say the military is less of a fighting force | :05:21. | :05:24.
and more of a trading company. It is unclear how much profit it makes or | :05:25. | :05:29.
how much of the economy it controls, but estimates range from | :05:30. | :05:39.
5% to 40% and beyond. It is keen to show off its major infrastructure | :05:40. | :05:43.
projects. They are delivered with military efficiency. It is not keen | :05:44. | :05:49.
on showing off its accounts. There is virtually no civilian oversight | :05:50. | :05:56.
of its budget. This expert says its vested interests have been concealed | :05:57. | :06:00.
for decades in the name of national security. It is a black box. Not | :06:01. | :06:07.
only, it is a black box in a dark room. We know there is a box, but we | :06:08. | :06:12.
just don't know how big it is in this room and we don't know what is | :06:13. | :06:18.
inside. That is how secret it is. This is dangerous for Egypt? Of | :06:19. | :06:24.
course it is. It is dangerous to the Egyptian economy and to the | :06:25. | :06:32.
transition to democracy. We got a rare look under the hood, or of the | :06:33. | :06:35.
chassis, at the Arab American vehicles company. It is seen as an | :06:36. | :06:42.
offshoot of the Egyptian economy. This joint`venture with Chrysler | :06:43. | :06:47.
international producers Jeeps for the army and the civilian market. | :06:48. | :06:53.
The retired general in charge says the military is an engine for | :06:54. | :06:58.
growth. It is important for the country, because it is part of the | :06:59. | :07:03.
driving force for the economy in the country. How much of the economy | :07:04. | :07:08.
does it control? This is the big question. The army supports, not | :07:09. | :07:18.
controls, only supports the economy in the country. Now, the economy and | :07:19. | :07:27.
the country are in the hands of al`Sisi, the former army chief. He | :07:28. | :07:33.
might be out of uniform, but he is still seen as their man. Under | :07:34. | :07:39.
President Sese, the army is expected to get even more of the spoils. | :07:40. | :07:46.
Pakistan might not have a team competing at the World Cup, but you | :07:47. | :07:49.
will still be feeling their influence on the pitch. That is | :07:50. | :07:54.
because they are one of only two countries making the official | :07:55. | :08:00.
football is. `` footballs. Our correspondent visits a factory in | :08:01. | :08:05.
Pakistani and find out that winning the contract to supply the footballs | :08:06. | :08:10.
was a reward for investing in the very latest technology `` Pakistan. | :08:11. | :08:15.
These are no ordinary footballs. They will be used during the World | :08:16. | :08:20.
Cup matches, kicked by some of the most famous footballing feat on the | :08:21. | :08:25.
planet. This factory in north`eastern Pakistan is one of | :08:26. | :08:28.
only two factories in the world which has the contract to make | :08:29. | :08:31.
footballs for the World Cup. The other is in China. These are called | :08:32. | :08:39.
zoo car, which means Brazil you. The colours of the ball reflect the | :08:40. | :08:44.
colours of the flag `` Brazuca. These represent the multicoloured | :08:45. | :08:50.
wristbands that resilience were and these white patches are a reference | :08:51. | :08:54.
to the country's status as five`time fever World Cup winners. Put balls | :08:55. | :08:59.
like these used to be handstitched, at Pakistan got left behind when the | :09:00. | :09:04.
technology developed for machine stitching. It took ten years for the | :09:05. | :09:10.
factory to catch up `` footballs. That meant a decade without a | :09:11. | :09:18.
contract. The technology changed. Pakistani companies didn't have the | :09:19. | :09:21.
most up`to`date technology. The Chinese companies were smarter and | :09:22. | :09:24.
more advanced and could produce more footballs with that technology at | :09:25. | :09:28.
good prices. Lots of buyers switch to China. It took a $1.1 million | :09:29. | :09:35.
investment to upgrade the factory. Now, the new machines are in place | :09:36. | :09:40.
and the contract has been renewed, and the footballs are coming off the | :09:41. | :09:45.
production line. The workers here say it will be a moment of glory to | :09:46. | :09:48.
see these footballs in the stadiums in Brazil. TRANSLATION: It takes a | :09:49. | :09:55.
lot of hard work to make these footballs and we feel proud that our | :09:56. | :09:59.
footballs will be going to Brazil for the World Cup. I will be | :10:00. | :10:01.
watching the game on TV with my family. Pakistani is better known | :10:02. | :10:09.
for its cricket. The country has a long way to go before it puts itself | :10:10. | :10:15.
on the football map `` Pakistan. For now, these balls have put the | :10:16. | :10:24.
country back in the beautiful game. That ends this edition of Reporters. | :10:25. | :10:28.
Don't forget to join us at the same time next week. For now, from me and | :10:29. | :10:32.
the rest of the Reporters team in London, goodbye. | :10:33. | :10:38. |
