I'm Phillipa Thomas from the world's newsroom, we send out | :00:00. | :00:24.
correspondents to bring the the best stories from across the globe. | :00:25. | :00:27.
This week, could Libya become the next bastion for IS? | :00:28. | :00:30.
The new unity government tells us that Islamic State could take | :00:31. | :00:33.

We report from North Carolina on the new law against the gay | :00:44. | :00:48.
and transgender community that has sparked anti-discrimination protests | :00:49. | :00:51.
and boycotts from companies and rock stars. | :00:52. | :00:53.
Things have been progressing now for many years in the right direction. | :00:54. | :01:12.
The Supreme Court said we could get married, it seems like this is a | :01:13. | :01:18.
retaliation to that. Setting their sights on Mars, as China plans to | :01:19. | :01:22.
lead the race to the red planet, Rebecca Morrelle gets an insight | :01:23. | :01:27.
into China's future aspirations in space. If China's ambition pays | :01:28. | :01:32.
off, this could be the next generation going to the Moon and | :01:33. | :01:33.

whether the works of Shakespeare could help to address the lack | :01:36. | :01:45.

town of Sirte, on the Mediterranean coast, last year, the militant group | :02:03. | :02:15.
is now extending its reach. The new unity government has | :02:16. | :02:18.
warned that IS could take over Libya has been plagued | :02:19. | :02:21.

and waiting to see if the competing militias and warringf actions can be | :02:32. | :02:39.

Tripoli's Square, welcoming Libya's It arrived a few weeks ago, | :02:49. | :02:50.
backed by the UN. The problem is, there are two | :02:51. | :03:00.
governments here already. And there is another cause | :03:01. | :03:03.
for concern. The so-called Islamic State is | :03:04. | :03:07.
now altering the equation here. The unity government warns | :03:08. | :03:13.

Sirte, hometown of Colonel Gaddafi. The fear is Libya could be another | :04:00. | :04:03.
Bastian for IS after Syria and Barack. The scars of war remain here | :04:04. | :04:13.
but many want to look beyond the prison of conflict. We visited | :04:14. | :04:18.
Misrata during the revolution with Gaddafi snipers still in residence. | :04:19. | :04:24.
Abdelhamid refused to leave his home on the front lines. Two of his | :04:25. | :04:32.
nephews dived for the new Libya. Today he is still there ready to | :04:33. | :04:36.
forgive their killers and hoping the new government can succeed. We have | :04:37. | :04:42.
to look for the future. Forget all about war, gardens, violence, | :04:43. | :04:49.
enemies, you have to live in peace. We have to build up Libya back up | :04:50. | :04:54.
again -- guns. Can you forgive those? Yes, for sure, for | :04:55. | :05:01.
everybody. Gaddafi's former compound in Tripoli is now a wasteland | :05:02. | :05:06.
overlooked in recent years, like Olivier itself. Barack Obama has | :05:07. | :05:11.
admitted failing to plan for the day after for the day after the move of | :05:12. | :05:16.
the Libyan leader was his biggest mistake. | :05:17. | :05:18.
Five years after Nato intervened here against Colonel Gaddafi, this | :05:19. | :05:20.
country is divided and unstable and, once again, it is a growing concern | :05:21. | :05:23.
There is a great deal at stake, the success or failure of the new | :05:24. | :05:36.
unity government has implications not just for Libya but also for | :05:37. | :05:39.
There are plenty of challenges ahead. Can the unity government | :05:40. | :05:45.
tackle Islamic State and curb the flow of illegal migrants? Can it | :05:46. | :05:51.
even rain in the militias? We joined one on a night patrol in the | :05:52. | :05:55.
capital. The Interior Ministry admits many are a law unto | :05:56. | :06:00.
themselves. It's hoping for some unity. Give us one government and | :06:01. | :06:08.
one Libya under one president, one government. We need to feel | :06:09. | :06:16.
security. And Europe needs that too. Gets weighing up what support | :06:17. | :06:21.
to provide, but it's far from clear if Libya's fragile new leadership | :06:22. | :06:26.
will be able to call the shots. Orla Guerin, BBC News, Tripoli. A family | :06:27. | :06:58.
at breaking point. Struggling with extreme poverty. This woman says she | :06:59. | :07:06.
was driven to make a huge sacrifice for her family. I decided to sell my | :07:07. | :07:10.
kidney. I can no longer provide for my family. It's better than selling | :07:11. | :07:18.
my body or living on charity. Her and her husband approached an | :07:19. | :07:22.
illegal trader to sell their organs. But initial tests proved to | :07:23. | :07:27.
their kidneys weren't healthy enough for transplant. Faced with | :07:28. | :07:31.
increasing debts, the family even considered using their children's | :07:32. | :07:39.
organs instead. TRANSLATION: Because of our miserable conditions we even | :07:40. | :07:43.
thought of selling our son's kidney. We would do anything but | :07:44. | :07:47.
beg. Why on earth are we in this position? May God save us. In the | :07:48. | :07:54.
end the family couldn't bring themselves to sell their children's | :07:55. | :07:58.
organs but just the thought of it has left them heartbroken. Criminal | :07:59. | :08:05.
gangs offering up to 10,000 US dollars for an organ are | :08:06. | :08:09.
increasingly targeting the poor and desperate across Iraq, making the | :08:10. | :08:12.
country a new hub for the illegal organ trade in the Middle East. We | :08:13. | :08:20.
have been granted rare access to an Iraqi prison to meet a man who was | :08:21. | :08:25.
caught offering kidneys for sale. He's serving time here along with | :08:26. | :08:31.
ten others convicted of organ trafficking. TRANSLATION: In the | :08:32. | :08:34.
very beginning I didn't feel guilty. Are used to look at it as a | :08:35. | :08:39.

I started questioning the morality, most of the... It broke my heart | :08:45. | :08:50.
seeing young people doing this for money. Our research has found | :08:51. | :08:55.
criminal trials France do not take place in backstreet hospitals. | :08:56. | :09:00.
Surgeons admit they have been regular clinics like this one. -- | :09:01. | :09:13.
transplants. TRANSLATION: There's no law in the world that holds surgeon | :09:14. | :09:17.
accountable for this. It's true that in some cases we have doubts. But | :09:18. | :09:22.
this is not enough to stop the surgery because people will die. The | :09:23. | :09:29.
illegal organ trade is a symbol of the increasing poverty and despair | :09:30. | :09:34.
among millions of Iraqis. Many in the country are left with few | :09:35. | :09:39.
options, including the difficult decision to illegally sell a | :09:40. | :09:45.
kidney. Pope Francis came to the front line of Europe's like an | :09:46. | :09:50.
crisis this week, telling thousands of refugees stranded on the Greek | :09:51. | :09:54.
island of Lesbos that they are not alone in their plight. He called on | :09:55. | :09:58.
the world to respond to the crisis in a way that was worthy of our | :09:59. | :10:04.
common humanity. And as Caroline Hawley reports, in a personal and | :10:05. | :10:09.
surprise gesture, Pope Francis took three Syrian families back with him | :10:10. | :10:14.
to Rome to start new lives. He came to what's being called the frontline | :10:15. | :10:17.
of the migrant crisis to meet the people who risk their lives to get | :10:18. | :10:21.
here and to plead for a more humane international response to them. | :10:22. | :10:27.
Please, may God bless me, may God have mercy. The Pope is used to | :10:28. | :10:34.
provoking emotions, they normally drawn from a religious fervour, not | :10:35. | :10:42.
desperation. All the migrants in this camp are now effectively | :10:43. | :10:46.
detained, awaiting either asylum or deportation. A deal between the UN | :10:47. | :10:51.
Turkey to try to stem the flow of migrants has provoked questions | :10:52. | :10:55.
about its morality and legality. The Pope has now added his weight to a | :10:56. | :11:00.
growing course of concern. TRANSLATION: We hope that the world | :11:01. | :11:06.
will heed these scenes of tragic and indeed desperate need and respond in | :11:07. | :11:12.
a way worthy of our common humanity. | :11:13. | :11:20.
Outside another camp, Syrians gathered for a glimpse of the Pope, | :11:21. | :11:24.
hoping somehow he would be their saviour. This man, a Kurd, said he | :11:25. | :11:32.
would rather die here than be returned to Turkey. All the migrants | :11:33. | :11:36.
we have met here have huge hopes and expectations of the outcome of the | :11:37. | :11:41.
Pope's short visit. He'll hope at least you have managed to have | :11:42. | :11:47.
stirred Europe's conscience. But what difference will be Pope's | :11:48. | :11:52.
visit actually make? We want them to rethink the EU Turkey deal and how | :11:53. | :11:56.
it's being implemented. At the moment it's being rushed through and | :11:57. | :11:59.
people aren't having their chance to have their claims for asylum fairly | :12:00. | :12:04.
heard. Luck was on the side of three Syrian families. The Pope's plane | :12:05. | :12:10.
returned with 12 extra passengers, six adults and six children, Muslims | :12:11. | :12:15.
that will be hosted by the Vatican. The chosen few plucked from migrant | :12:16. | :12:20.
misery got a Tour of the historic centre of Rome looking slightly | :12:21. | :12:25.
bewildered. The Pope's dramatic and pointed gesture has transformed | :12:26. | :12:30.
their lives. But back on Lesbos, more than 3000 people remain | :12:31. | :12:34.
incarcerated in the camp Pope Francis visited, stuck here in legal | :12:35. | :12:40.
limbo. Caroline Hawley, BBC News, Lesbos. | :12:41. | :12:46.
There is a fierce debate going on in the US state of North Carolina over | :12:47. | :12:50.
a new law that affects the gay, lesbian and transgender community. | :12:51. | :12:52.
It means transgender people can only use public toilets according to | :12:53. | :12:55.
It also restricts the protection of some gay and transgender | :12:56. | :12:59.
Companies have threatened boycotts and rock stars, including Bruce | :13:00. | :13:03.
Springsteen, have cancelled their shows in North Carolina in protest. | :13:04. | :13:10.
Luke is 17, he plays in his school band, loves his dog, | :13:11. | :13:14.
He never identified as a girl and is now going through the medical | :13:15. | :13:24.
But his state has just passed a law that says that he and others who are | :13:25. | :13:32.
transgender have to use public bathrooms for the sex they were born | :13:33. | :13:35.
Dressed like this, I don't want to go to the girls' bathroom because | :13:36. | :13:45.
I'll be asked by my peers, it'll be like, "what are you doing?" | :13:46. | :13:48.
If I go to guys' bathroom and somebody knows I am transgender | :13:49. | :13:52.
and doesn't like me, they could out me very easily and I could get | :13:53. | :13:56.
suspension from school temporarily for having to go to the bathroom. | :13:57. | :14:00.
There have been demonstrations against the new measures, | :14:01. | :14:02.
Bruce Springsteen and Ringo Starr are among those who have cancelled | :14:03. | :14:07.
performances in North Carolina in protest. | :14:08. | :14:10.
PayPal and Deutsche Bank said they are pulling investment out of the | :14:11. | :14:13.
A lot of the focus has been on the issue of what bathroom can be | :14:14. | :14:30.
used by members of the transgender community but | :14:31. | :14:32.
For the people across North Carolina, | :14:33. | :14:35.
this law takes away protection against discrimination on the basis | :14:36. | :14:38.
of sexual orientation, which had been provided by other local laws. | :14:39. | :14:40.
That affects the many employees here, from the | :14:41. | :14:43.
LGBT community, as we heard quite frankly from one of the politicians | :14:44. | :14:46.
I think that an employer has the right to choose who the employer | :14:47. | :14:55.
wants to work, unless it is a matter of race, colour, national origin, | :14:56. | :14:59.
You think it is OK for an employer to say, I don't want | :15:00. | :15:08.
There is no national law in America that explicitly forbids that, | :15:09. | :15:16.
but here, where senior elected officials are openly saying | :15:17. | :15:19.
discrimination is OK, is something members of the gay community told us | :15:20. | :15:22.
I'm surprised that people still feel like that. | :15:23. | :15:28.
I mean, being gay is nothing to do with your job. | :15:29. | :15:33.
Things have been progressing for decades now in the right direction. | :15:34. | :15:35.
This just goes and shows us how much more work has to be done. | :15:36. | :15:46.
The Supreme Court said we could get married, it seems like this | :15:47. | :15:49.
Pressure is building to repeal the law which rules | :15:50. | :15:52.
on bathrooms and taking away LGBT rights, politicians here are | :15:53. | :15:55.
Some believe the long-term survival of the race, we will have to leave | :15:56. | :16:16.
Earth and populate other planets. But which ones? Mars is seen by many | :16:17. | :16:20.
as the best bet and a potential home. Now China has become the | :16:21. | :16:25.
latest nation to announce plans for a mission to land a probe on the red | :16:26. | :16:30.
planet. In the past, Beijing has been secretive about its military | :16:31. | :16:35.
led space programmes, but we have been speaking exclusively to the | :16:36. | :16:38.
head designer of China's Luna and Mars mission. | :16:39. | :16:43.
At Beijing's science museum, they are starting to open up about space. | :16:44. | :16:47.
After decades of secrecy, China's space agency is starting to open | :16:48. | :16:51.
up. Its new era in space exploration is | :16:52. | :16:52.
capturing the public's imagination. Enthusiasm for space starts | :16:53. | :16:55.
early here in China. They have come here today to | :16:56. | :16:59.
learn about the latest mission. And that is important, | :17:00. | :17:02.
because if their ambition pays off, this could be the next generation | :17:03. | :17:07.
going to the moon and beyond. For now, | :17:08. | :17:12.
the alien terrain of the Red Planet This is the mission's chief | :17:13. | :17:14.
designer. And | :17:15. | :17:33.
in his first interview outside of Chinese media he says a trip to Mars | :17:34. | :17:35.
has been a long time in the making. TRANSLATION: The US, Europe and | :17:36. | :17:39.
India have all sent probes to Mars. But finally we have approval, and we | :17:40. | :17:42.
plan to orbit, land, and then send In 2013, | :17:43. | :17:46.
it made its way to the moon. It became the first country to land | :17:47. | :17:59.
a probe there for nearly 40 years. Now, it also has plans to | :18:00. | :18:04.
return to the lunar surface. This time, | :18:05. | :18:08.
to go to a place no-one has been TRANSLATION: It's quite challenging | :18:09. | :18:11.
to land in this area, but there might be water or ice, so we would | :18:12. | :18:17.
like to check it out very much. And China's astronauts could soon be | :18:18. | :18:23.
working alongside other nations, Because China's space programme is | :18:24. | :18:26.
military-led, the US government won't collaborate with it | :18:27. | :18:33.
for fears of national security. TRANSLATION: We would welcome | :18:34. | :18:40.
co-operation with the US. We have urged | :18:41. | :18:43.
the US many times to get rid of the restrictions, to enable | :18:44. | :18:45.
scientists from both countries to But, with its future missions, | :18:46. | :18:50.
China is becoming a space power of its own, one that is not going | :18:51. | :18:56.
to let anything get in its way. It was once a thriving American oil | :18:57. | :19:14.
stay, but the slump in prices has meant North Dakota has gone from | :19:15. | :19:18.
boom to bust. It is taking a heavy toll on the local economy and unity, | :19:19. | :19:23.
which have come to rely on fracking and the shale oil industry. We have | :19:24. | :19:27.
been to North Dakota, a state which is now virtually running on empty. | :19:28. | :19:33.
Flying low above North Dakota's planes, pump jacks dotting the | :19:34. | :19:39.
landscape, evidence of the shale boom that has helped to power | :19:40. | :19:45.
America's energy when arsons. The falling oil prices, North Dakota's | :19:46. | :19:48.
oil economy is now in trouble. On the ground, signs of the downturn. | :19:49. | :19:54.
Used wellheads sit unsold outside this services company. The owner | :19:55. | :19:59.
says he has had to cut salaries and workers. Two years ago, it would be | :20:00. | :20:05.
35 people working here, and now I'm not sure what you can see behind me, | :20:06. | :20:09.
but there are three or four people. He says there is now less business | :20:10. | :20:13.
to go around. It is vitally a game of musical chairs where there are so | :20:14. | :20:18.
many vendor is chasing a very small amount of work, so the environment | :20:19. | :20:25.
is considerably tougher. Barrick style housing were built during the | :20:26. | :20:28.
boom years. Now much of it looks deserted. Two years ago, the wreck | :20:29. | :20:35.
room at this worker camp would have been packed. -- recreation room. | :20:36. | :20:40.
Everything was full. It was hard to find a parking spot every day. A big | :20:41. | :20:45.
difference. The whole timing is basically vacant. There are two or | :20:46. | :20:52.
three people. -- Hall I'm in. Now rates have plummeted. Many workers | :20:53. | :20:57.
can't afford to stay and wait for things to pick up. We drove less | :20:58. | :21:02.
than a mile from the camp and came across this, what is clearly an | :21:03. | :21:06.
abandoned RV Park. You can see all the debris that has been left | :21:07. | :21:11.
behind. Many laid off workers have been unable to find new jobs. As you | :21:12. | :21:17.
can see, in some cases, they have given up and left town. Lifelong | :21:18. | :21:22.
North Dakota and is have not been spared by the slump either. This | :21:23. | :21:27.
farmland has been in this family since the 1920s. Today Continental | :21:28. | :21:31.
oil leases some of it, but the monthly checks are not what they | :21:32. | :21:36.
used to be. I have been around oil long enough to know that even if you | :21:37. | :21:41.
have an oil well, it could be plugged in a month. Those royalties | :21:42. | :21:49.
may enter, you know? The energy companies and workers who remain in | :21:50. | :21:52.
North Dakota are betting the slump will end. The question is when? | :21:53. | :21:59.
This year's Oscars heralded a call for more diversity | :22:00. | :22:01.
but could a 400-year-old tale of jealousy and racial bigotry | :22:02. | :22:08.
