2012 has been a remarkable year in so many ways. A year that brought

:00:12.:00:16.

the runaway success of the Olympics, and the historic achievement of a

:00:16.:00:21.

Diamond Jubilee. But for dozens of forces' families, 2012 will forever

:00:21.:00:25.

be a year of loss and sadness. Tonight, at the Royal British

:00:25.:00:30.

Legion Festival of Remembrance, we pay tribute to members of the

:00:30.:00:40.
:00:40.:00:51.

British Armed Forces and we MUSIC: "March Militaire - La Ronde"

:01:01.:02:09.

Your majesty, your Royal Highnesss, ladies and gentlemen, this

:02:09.:02:13.

Remembrance weekend we honour the memory of all those who gave their

:02:13.:02:17.

lives in the service of their country. In the 12 months since

:02:17.:02:23.

last year's Festival, 52 members of the British Armed Forces have lost

:02:23.:02:29.

their lives, many others have been seriously injured. The work of the

:02:29.:02:34.

Royal British Legion is more important than ever. So please

:02:34.:02:38.

welcome the National and Branch Standards of the Royal British

:02:38.:02:42.

branches and representatives of the ex-service and civilian

:02:55.:03:03.

The Union Flag bearer for the third year in succession is John Grimes

:03:03.:03:06.

from South Wales, followed by the National Standard Bearer in the

:03:06.:03:11.

Youth section and women's section and the Scotland National Bearer.

The cadet banners representing 14,000 sea cadets in the UK, 46,000

army cadets and 46,000 air cadets, too.

:03:24.:03:30.

Here we have the first of 109 Standard Bearer representing 2,500

:03:30.:03:34.

branches of the Legion across the country and overseas. These are the

:03:34.:03:38.

branches that provide the vital support for people in their local

:03:38.:03:48.
:03:48.:03:57.

communities and a meeting place for These numbers are reminder that the

:03:57.:04:02.

Legion is one of Britain's biggest membership organisations with

:04:02.:04:06.

360,000 members, including the women's section.

:04:06.:04:11.

These are the people with all of their friends and colleagues who

:04:11.:04:16.

raise 136 million for the Legion last year and there is a Falklands

:04:16.:04:20.

veteran, Garrison Sergeant Major in charge of the precision and drill

:04:20.:04:25.

of this event. With us too are the ex-service

:04:25.:04:30.

associations, the South Atlantic Medal Association, Steven Kay

:04:30.:04:35.

representing the Falklands Falklands receipt vans, the Royal

:04:35.:04:38.

Marines associations, the Royal engineers association here, too.

:04:38.:04:45.

Brian Simm is representing them. The Royal Air Force Association,

:04:45.:04:50.

the Royal Ulster Constabulary George Cross Association, the

:04:50.:04:55.

Merchant Navy and Bomber Command Association represented by by Ron

:04:55.:05:05.
:05:05.:05:18.

I was nearly killed three, in the course of one battle

:05:18.:05:22.

Once a year, I think it's quite good to have a focus,

:05:22.:05:24.

to think of the people who weren't so lucky.

:05:24.:05:31.

The chief achievement of the 2nd Battalion Scots Guards

:05:31.:05:34.

was the taking of Tumbledown Mountain,

:05:34.:05:37.

which was the final, decisive battle of the Falklands War.

:05:37.:05:40.

It was fought at night, in poor visibility

:05:40.:05:44.

with close-quarter infantry action, driving snow showers,

:05:44.:05:47.

and it went on for hours and was very fiercely contested.

:05:47.:05:51.

We were moving up through the crags,

:05:51.:05:53.

and we came under intense enemy fire.

:05:53.:05:57.

The two forward assault platoons were taking casualties

:05:57.:06:00.

and, as the fighting went on and on,- the toll began to mount.

:06:00.:06:04.

I got informed over the radio that the platoon sergeant

:06:04.:06:07.

had been shot and he was badly wounded.

:06:07.:06:12.

My father was shot in the thigh

:06:12.:06:14.

and then subsequently was shot in the chest,

:06:15.:06:18.

and that was the wound which ultimately cost him his life.

:06:18.:06:22.

He was doing what any soldier would do, you know,

:06:22.:06:25.

committing a selfless act for the great of others.

:06:25.:06:28.

It was a complete shock because John was a leader of men,

:06:28.:06:31.

and we were depending on John to lead us up that hill,

:06:31.:06:35.

but you had to get on with it. You had to safeguard yourself

:06:35.:06:39.

and the remainder of the guys that were still fighting.

:06:39.:06:42.

We'd been battling literary for hours,

:06:42.:06:45.

and then the situation suddenly changed,

:06:45.:06:48.

and we found ourselves - there were only seven of us by this stage -

:06:48.:06:51.

at the top of Tumbledown,

:06:51.:06:53.

looking down and seeing the lights of Stanley in the distance.

:06:53.:06:56.

Almost to that moment,we were engaged with automatic fire.

:06:56.:06:59.

Your body in these things, you can't- move as fast as your brain can,

:06:59.:07:03.

and I heard one chap get hit,

:07:03.:07:05.

and then another one, and then it was my turn.

:07:05.:07:12.

You know, my father, from what people have said,

:07:12.:07:14.

was a very good soldier.

:07:14.:07:17.

Ultimately, how you command your men

:07:17.:07:19.

is the way that you'll be remembered,

:07:19.:07:21.

and 30 years on from the Falklands,

:07:22.:07:24.

that is the way that he is remembered.

:07:24.:07:27.

I do think about them every day,

:07:27.:07:29.

but the Remembrance Service brings it all back

:07:29.:07:31.

and you think about everyone that has lost loved ones,

:07:31.:07:33.

including the enemy, because we killed their sons as well.

:07:33.:07:37.

That will live with me for ever.

:07:37.:07:47.

This year, 2012, has brought the 30th anniversary of the Falklands

:07:55.:08:00.

campaign and for some, as we know, the experience is still vivid. We

:08:00.:08:05.

just heard from Alasdair Mitchell and Thomas McInnes about the

:08:05.:08:08.

challenging conditions and sorrow of losing comrades. They both join

:08:08.:08:14.

us now, accompanied by three pipers from the Scots Guards, Falklands

:08:14.:08:22.

veterans, Pipe Major Steven Duffy and Pipe Major Peter Macinnes and

they play The Crags of Tumbledown Mountain, a piece written on the

Few institutions

Few institutions in

:14:02.:14:06.

Few institutions in the United Kingdom have a record of unbroken

:14:06.:14:10.

service spanning more than three centuries. None is more

:14:10.:14:14.

distinguished probably than the Royal Hospital Chelsea, established

:14:14.:14:20.

by Charles II to provide soldiers with a fitting home in retirement.

:14:20.:14:23.

The Royal Hospital still provides a secure environment for those who

:14:24.:14:30.

have known military life and since 2009 it's been a home for men and

:14:30.:14:38.

women. The warmest welcome, once again to the Festival, to the

:14:38.:14:48.
:14:48.:15:16.

Always a rousing welcome for the Chelsea Pensioners at the Albert

Led by sap sergeant Major pierce Laly. The oldest pensioners is 92.

Band of her Majesty's Royal Marines. From one flawless performance to no

protecting all the RAF's deployed assets and when not on frontline

service they provide the world famous Queen's Colour Squadron

which played a prominent part in this year's Diamond Jubilee

:22:45.:26:16.

95% of my time in the Forces I fell for the lifestyle,

:26:16.:26:18.

After the Gulf War, we got sent to Bosnia,

:26:18.:26:21.

which was a completely different war altogether.

:26:21.:26:23.

It was a civil war.

:26:23.:26:25.

It wasn't just men getting affected,- it's women and children.

:26:25.:26:29.

We got into quite a bad firefight, which sits, still to this day,

:26:29.:26:33.

very heavy on my shoulders.

:26:34.:26:36.

You see sort of pure carnage.

:26:36.:26:40.

It's very hard to portray that to people, why that will affect you.

:26:40.:26:46.

I left the Army about a year after the Bosnia incident.

:26:46.:26:51.

I've had some absolutely up times, but then,

:26:51.:26:54.

when I would get in stressful positions and things like that,

:26:54.:26:57.

then, unfortunately, I would go right downhill.

:26:57.:27:00.

I would become a recluse.

:27:00.:27:03.

You bottle it up, and it's like a bottle of Coke -

:27:03.:27:06.

if you shake it up,it will come out...you know, explode.

:27:06.:27:10.

And that's basically what, unfortunately, happened.

:27:10.:27:17.

A friend of mine, who was an ex-serviceman, he told me,

:27:17.:27:20.

"Go to the Legion. You've earned it.

:27:20.:27:22.

"You did your service, and the Legion are there to help people."

:27:22.:27:27.

Derek contacted us two years ago.

:27:27.:27:30.

The Royal British Legion provided Derek with a deposit

:27:30.:27:33.

and the first month's rent on a flat for him.

:27:33.:27:36.

We didn't become aware of just how serious Derek's problems were

:27:36.:27:40.

until about a month later.

:27:40.:27:42.

I wasn't taking care of myself, I was drinking very heavy.

:27:42.:27:45.

He was obviously very mentally disturbed - shaking, sobbing.

:27:45.:27:51.

They talked me into, "Go and see the doctor,"

:27:51.:27:54.

and then I was diagnosed with having- post-traumatic stress disorder.

:27:55.:28:00.

I've found it almost impossible to come to terms with.

:28:00.:28:03.

I had a mental illness,

:28:03.:28:05.

I've got something that will trouble me for the rest of my life,

:28:05.:28:09.

but there is ways of coping with it.

:28:09.:28:11.

Come, Bobby! Come here!

:28:11.:28:15.

Derek knows that the Royal British Legion is always there for him.

:28:15.:28:18.

He knows he only has to pick the phone up

:28:18.:28:20.

and one of the welfare team will be here

:28:21.:28:22.

to talk through any problems or issues.

:28:22.:28:24.

What I would like to say to the RBL

:28:24.:28:27.

would be very hard to put into words.

:28:27.:28:29.

I just give a big, massive thank you,

:28:29.:28:32.

and that comes from the bottom of my heart,

:28:32.:28:34.

because they have done so much for me, and they didn't have to.

:28:34.:28:44.

The RAF came round.

:32:33.:32:38.

They don't come round to see you for no reason at all. It's, um...

:32:38.:32:42.

It's only usually with bad news.

:32:42.:32:50.

It started with my dad.

:32:50.:32:52.

My dad was in the RAF Regiment during his National Service.

:32:53.:32:56.

Anybody that was in the military,

:32:56.:32:58.

if they wanted to talk to him, Ryan would listen.

:32:59.:33:01.

You couldn't have asked for a better brother. He loved the RAF,

:33:01.:33:05.

everything from the actual job, to working with his colleagues,

:33:05.:33:09.

to going away with his colleagues, nights out.

:33:09.:33:12.

He loved just the whole lifestyle of it, really.

:33:12.:33:17.

He went out to Afghanistan in 2009 - 2010,

:33:17.:33:23.

and then he went again, 2011 - 2012.

:33:23.:33:29.

He couldn't wait to get out there and to get amongst it all again.

:33:29.:33:32.

He always used to say, "If you're not living life on the edge,

:33:32.:33:35.

"you're taking up too much room."

:33:35.:33:37.

They'd been out there for three months and they was on a patrol,

:33:38.:33:41.

and he got out of his vehicle and he was shot from behind by...

:33:41.:33:48.

They don't know who done it. But, um... That was it.

:33:48.:33:53.

He...he was killed instantly.

:33:53.:33:59.

Ryan's letter started with the opening line,

:33:59.:34:02.

"If you're reading this, I'm kicking- it with the big guy in the sky."

:34:02.:34:07.

And...

:34:07.:34:10.

It was comforting to read it... what he'd wrote in it.

:34:10.:34:16.

But he was just thinking of his friends...and his family.

:34:16.:34:23.

I'll always remember him as being fun-loving,

:34:23.:34:25.

enjoying his life, and just following his dreams, really.

:34:25.:34:29.

A real inspiration. That's how I'll remember him.

:34:29.:34:33.

He was always, um, smiling.

:34:33.:34:37.

He was never down.

:34:37.:34:44.

He never brought nothing but joy.

Ladies and gentlemen, in June this year the Bomber Command Memorial

:36:59.:37:04.

was unveiled by Her Majesty the Queen in Green Park in central

:37:04.:37:10.

London, it's a fitting memorial to the servicemen and women who served

:37:10.:37:15.

in Bomber Command. The average age of crew members was 22. Some who

:37:15.:37:23.

joined had a realistic expectation of surviving for just two weeks.

:41:03.:41:19.

I was a good navigator, I think.

:41:19.:41:21.

We always got back.

:41:21.:41:24.

Except the last time.

:41:24.:41:28.

I suppose, on my first op, I felt excited.

:41:28.:41:33.

We had no real idea of what an air raid looked like from the air.

:41:33.:41:37.

Many of us had experienced it when we were back home, on leave.

:41:37.:41:43.

Bomber Command was a means of retaliation.

:41:43.:41:47.

Nobody was ever very happy about dropping bombs,

:41:47.:41:51.

but war is a terrible thing, so I dropped bombs.

:41:51.:41:58.

I suppose the most common phrase that you would hear

:41:58.:42:02.

on a bomber station was,

:42:02.:42:04.

"It's not going to happen to me."

:42:04.:42:06.

It was heard all over the place.

:42:06.:42:09.

Or, "It's not going to happen to us."

:42:09.:42:12.

But I'm afraid, suddenly, there were seven empty beds.

:42:12.:42:18.

You just had to accept it.

:42:18.:42:23.

We came under attack on our 17th trip.

:42:23.:42:28.

The captain decided that we weren't really going to make it

:42:28.:42:32.

and said, "Everybody out!"

:42:32.:42:36.

I landed in a tree very close to the-frontier between Belgium and Holland.

:42:36.:42:43.

I did get a marvellous amount of help

:42:43.:42:47.

from very many wonderful people.

:42:47.:42:51.

They didn't think of their own safety,

:42:51.:42:55.

and I eventually arrived down into Gibraltar.

:42:55.:43:01.

I've been extremely lucky. Very fortunate indeed.

:43:01.:43:05.

The cost, as far as Bomber Command was concerned,

:43:05.:43:08.

was getting on for 50%.

:43:08.:43:11.

I certainly remember, especially my crew,

:43:11.:43:15.

but many other people,

:43:15.:43:18.

think what could have been to those who didn't survive.

:43:18.:43:23.

We're the poorer without them.

:43:23.:43:33.

Stewart! The solemn tradition of observing a

established for nearly a century. A much older treuld is -- tradition

is that of the laying up of drums to form a temporary altar, the

focal point of a service to remember those lost in battle.

:49:56.:50:00.

Tonight, the act of Remembrance will happen when the poppies fall

and we all reflect in silence on the sacrifice of so many. We start

with the laying of the altar and the muster of some of today's

:03:40.:04:37.

fitting welcome. I wouldn't consider my actions

:04:37.:04:41.

I think, on that day, we were in that position.

:04:41.:04:43.

I think, any other day, it could have been a different team

:04:43.:04:44.

and they'd have done exactly the same.

:04:44.:04:46.

Simon is one of those people that, when you meet him,

:04:46.:04:48.

you don't really see anything special,

:04:48.:04:49.

but when you get to know him,

:04:49.:04:51.

you know that he's a courageous, determined individual

:04:51.:04:53.

who will always support the rest of his team.

:04:53.:04:56.

On June 11th, the Brigade Reconnaissance Force

:04:56.:04:59.

had been engaged in an area known as the Adanzai Bazaar.

:04:59.:05:03.

The insurgents obviously started getting a feel for where we were

:05:03.:05:05.

and what we were doing.

:05:06.:05:07.

There was a firefight going on, and we knew that that firing point

:05:08.:05:10.

had to be neutralised as quickly as possible.

:05:10.:05:13.

His mates were in danger.

:05:13.:05:15.

They were being engaged by a machine gunner,

:05:15.:05:17.

and he was in a position where he thought he could something about it,

:05:17.:05:20.

and the way he decided to assault was a couple of grenades

:05:20.:05:23.

over the wall to stun the enemy, and then dive into a sewage ditch

:05:23.:05:27.

and crawl underneath the wall, leaping out on the other side,

:05:27.:05:30.

not knowing what to expect.

:05:30.:05:32.

It was the best way of getting into that compound, on the scene,

:05:32.:05:34.

unheard and, ultimately, giving us the advantage

:05:34.:05:37.

when it came to the engagement.

:05:37.:05:40.

It's always hard to say how many lives he saved, but he certainly...

:05:40.:05:43.

He removed the peril instantly,

:05:43.:05:46.

and as soon as the machine gunner had been dealt with,

:05:46.:05:49.

the rest of the insurgents just melted away back into the desert.

:05:49.:05:54.

Being awarded the Conspicuous Gallantry Cross,

:05:54.:05:57.

it means a great deal to me. It's massive honour,

:05:57.:06:00.

but I think every single man within that squadron

:06:00.:06:03.

deserves to be singled out, as well.

:06:03.:06:09.

When I walk into the Royal Albert Hall

:06:09.:06:11.

carrying the Book of Remembrance,

:06:11.:06:13.

I'll feel very privileged to be doing it.

:06:13.:06:15.

I'll be thinking of, obviously,

:06:15.:06:17.

the guys that have paid the ultimate- sacrifice, but also their families,

:06:17.:06:20.

their children, their wives, husbands, that have been left behind.

:06:20.:06:23.

They'll be forefront in my mind.
