That's all after the papers. Hello and welcome to our look ahead

to the papers. Easy bet Hardman of the Spectator

and Mr Creighton of the Daily Record join me and Richard Walker of the

Sunday Herald with is us too. We'll start with the Met row,

dedicating its front`page to the comedian Rik Mayall who's died at

the age of 56. The Express is reporting on the tomato extract that

could help thousands to prevent heart disease and strokes. The

maximum fine for speeding is to be quad Ruperted, rising to ?10,000,

according to The Telegraph. The Ofsted report into the schools in

Birmingham is the Guardian's main story. It's quoted Michael Gove as

saying schools must promote British values. The Financial Times says

moves from banks have experienced volcanotity in the global financial

markets. The Daily Record is marking the death of Rik Mayall's death.

Alex Salmond says he'll remain as leader if there is a no`vote too.

The Ofsted report features in the Times. The Daily Mail goes with the

story of the damning verdict by Ofsted.

The Guardian, all school must promote British values says Michael

Gove, the Education Secretary, seizes on Birmingham reports. I

suppose the next question is, what are British values? Indeed.

British values, he's paddling as quickly as he can on this day they

have had in the Commons. The reports in the Guardian tell us, as the

Ofsted report tells you, that the inspectors found narrow faith`based

idealogy, inappropriate use of school funds and five of the schools

have been put into special measures and all schools in England now,

because of course this Secretary of State of education in England only

will have to be taught the British rules of democracy, rule of law,

respect for gender equality, that kind of thing. Civic values you

could say. Isabelle, it's the kind of manifesto, I suppose you could

say that a lot of Tory voters would support, potentially UKIP voters? I

think so. I think it's probably not the worst set of headlines for

Downing Street after a week of dreadful headlines from this row

between Theresa May and Michael Gove. It's moved away from

tensionses in the Cabinet and on to the policy and the Government taking

control and on to this announcement of teaching British values, which

aside from this row about the Trojan Horse plot is something voters will

be very much in favour of. Richard in Glasgow, what would you suggest

British values are? Well, British values can be defined

by different people in different ways. Liberty and tolerance, that's

fine, great idea. I think what Michael Gove means though are

Christian values and I think the mixing of religion and education is

not always a great idea. I think you could might be asking some questions

about the relevance of Christian values in schoolsry are

overwhelmingly Muslim. Tolerance works both ways and I'm not sure

it's working both ways right now with some of the statements Michael

Gove is making. That's interesting. If we go to the Daily Express, page

2, the Trojan Horse, invasion of the classroom, that's at the top of the

page but it says crackdown on Muslim extremists in zoos. That's the issue

isn't it, these are schools which are overwhelmingly Islamic and that

is a dangerous dynamic isn't it? Potentially, if you are talking

about British values? The allegation of the charge of the Governors,

Islamic extremists interpretations of religion into schools and we talk

about British values. Richard is here as well, can you imagine if we

were talking about Scottish values, you know, if there were a Scottish

Secretary of State of education saying we were going to have

Scottish values in schools, you know, what are they? How do you

define the notion of Scottish identity and how do you teach the

schools? As Richard said, it's a modern thing as well as a civic

thing. It goes on to religious territory. These things are kind of,

you know, eating humble pie. ? Part of the problem though is that part

of what the British values is tolerance and acceptance of

traditional religion and if there's any viction that's being undermined,

that goes against the notion of what is British doesn't it Yes but that

would be the case you would hope for any School of Any religion. If you

had a hardline Christian school that was promoting intolerance to other

religions, if you had a for right group in a British school that was

promoting intolerance to other faiths, you would hope there would

be a similar crackdown because fundamentally British values are

about that almost lack of intensity where everyone is able to get on and

to agree regardless of what your faith is. That's the case for many

British Muslims, there's nothing on that list that they would disagree

with in terms of respect for one another, tolerance, personal

freedom, all that sort of thing. Sure. Richard, there's a slight

confusion in the mind of a lot of parents in some of the schools

because one of the establishments, Oldknow academy, Ofsted found the

achievement of pupils was outstanding, the quality of the

teaching was outstanding, yet it goes on to say the behaviour and

safety of the pupils is inadequate and the leadership and management

are inadequate. Are those things compatible? There are some odd

findings. Park View school two years ago was found to be outstanding, a

model for other schools and it's found be deficient in every single

category. I don't know what's happened in two years, but something

catastrophic's happened. Some of the examples that we are being told, for

instance of pupils being told the school doesn't believe in evolution,

well it's not just Muslim schools that teach that, there are other

schools in America which teach specifically that evolution didn't

happen. It was reported a couple of years back about a school teaching

that the Loch Ness monster existed so it's not just Muslim schools

which teach dubious facts if indeed the schools are teaching these

facts. Isabelle, is this really a statement on Ofsted? I was listening

to a former Chief Inspector of Schools who was saying today that

part of the problem with the way Ofsted looks at the whether schools

perform well or not is that they have simply a checklist of things?

They look at whether or not proper records are being kept, whether the

teachers are preparing lessons properly and examinations results,

easy to tick, tick, tick, but the atmosphere, you know, the underlying

ethos of the school, that's not looked at and for the first time,

some people are suggesting with this investigation they have had to do

that? I suppose that's the problem with any public service, it can't

just be a tick box exercise that manages to glide over what's

probably quite obvious to the inspectors is a problem. I think one

other thing to come out of this that is positive is the debate about

having no notice inspections. This would be fennel bishop for all

teachers anyway because if you get notice of an Ofsted inspection, your

school goes into mayhem for 24 hours as the school tries to spruce itself

up `` beneficial for all teachers. Once again, this is clever by Gove.

He talks about British values, who can object against that, and he

talks about the snap inspections, dawn raids, anyone outside the

profession would think it was a great idea, I don't know how it

would look if you were a teacher or Ofsted inspector. It's about how

else do you manage the performance, setting parameters and ticking boxes

at the end of the day, but I'm sure Ofsted inspectors and teachers,

there is an element of them thinking about that. Let's move on to the

daily Telegraph, Gordon Brown urges for a debate between the Prime

Minister and Alex Salmond. One would guess you would agree with this? Yes

and we have argued that for some time now. On the one hand David

Cameron is saying independence for Scotland would be a disaster and he

will fight for the union, on the other hand he is saying it is not

really an issue for me, it is up to Scotland to decide. I don't think

you can save those two things and be credible for very long. He has come

to Scotland and issued his edicts. It seems perfectly reasonable for

the Prime Minister of the UK, if it is he says he is passionate about

saving the union, that doesn't extend to a debate with the First

Minister of Scotland? It is a bit strange. I'm sure the pressure will

grow. Do you see number ten caving in? I don't think so. It is

something David Cameron wants to avoid because he doesn't want Alex

Salmond to make this about Scotland versus the Eton boys in Westminster.

Whilst he cannot stay away from it, he is wise to stay away from a

specific debate. Do you agree? Yes, but Gordon Brown seems to be saying

contrary things. He gave a very good speech about how Scotland was moving

away from the parliament to the people. He warned that Better

Together and David Cameron had the wrong idea by train to make this an

argument of Scotland versus Britain. He said Britain would lose that

argument, and at the same time he says David Cameron should have a

debate with Alex Salmond, which is exactly the ground that Gordon Brown

doesn't want the debate to be on. Alex Salmond would be licking his

lips tonight but David Cameron will never give him a debate on less

Better Together were suddenly 20 points behind. It is difficult for

the politicians to do this, they had to come up with jokes and be more

thoughtful. We are dreadful people! We expect jokes but also a

philosophical underpinning, which Gordon Brown did today, he was very

good. You just had to decide which storyline went best, and that one

was the slip`up, saying David Cameron should debate. I am welling

up here, Gordon Brown being bullied by hard`hearted hacks. He has been

doing it not `` long enough... The daily record, and Alex Salmond says,

I will stick around for the 2016 pole. Would you be happy with that?

Yes, if he has a job to do. He is in the job because he got a landslide

result of the last election despite the fact the election voting system

was designed to avoid just such a result so he is clearly popular

insofar as his position of running the country and I don't see any

reason why he should stop doing that if he fails to win the referendum,

which I don't believe he will. A very interesting statistic that men

are divided equally as to whether they will vote yes or no, women, two

thirds at the moment are in the know camp. Why is that? `` no camp. It

would be a very brave man to explain that and I am not that man. I don't

want to sound patronising and generalising. There was one woman in

a piece that Alan Little did, and I am going to ask you is the only lady

among us, who said the blokes probably won't do enough research or

know all the details and they are led by emotion. I also read that it

is because women worry about the household finances and apply the

same thinking to national politics. I cannot give you any insight into

what a normal woman thinks because I am obsessed with select committees

and that sort of thing. It is very interesting, and as we have been

seeing over the last few weeks and months, the yes campaign has been

doing better in the polls, but still at the moment it is a call that the

no campaign are going to win. A young one, Rik Mayall has died at

the age of 56. Yes, shocking news, a young man. Everyone will remember

him, anyone who has ever shared a flat with a few other blokes in the

1970s always had Rik Mayall in their flat, home raging ego who never did

anything. A very skilled guy, he will be missed. A bit like Mel

Smith's last year. The light goes out and he will be fondly

remembered. You are all going to be back with us for another look at the
