Hello, it's 9 o'clock, I'm Victoria Derbyshire, | :00:08. | :00:09.
Our top story today - survivors and relatives of those | :00:10. | :00:14.
who died in the Grenfell Tower fire have only received a small amount | :00:15. | :00:17.
of the money and items donated by the public. | :00:18. | :00:19.
Also on the programme - campaigners calling for the urgent | :00:20. | :00:25.
suspension of vaginal mesh implants in England are taking their case | :00:26. | :00:28.
It follows the exclusive coverage of the issue on this programme. | :00:29. | :00:40.
I am registered disabled. I am doubly incontinent and I have no | :00:41. | :00:48.
control over my bowel Orr bladder. I won't leave the house until I know | :00:49. | :00:50.
Miss Bowel is empty. Today the Dog's Trust releases | :00:51. | :00:57.
shocking footage of underage puppies apparently being transported | :00:58. | :01:03.
across europe and illegally into the UK - sedated | :01:04. | :01:05.
and with their umbilical cords We'll bring you the full | :01:06. | :01:07.
story before 10. Also on the programme today. | :01:08. | :01:36.
# I believe I can fly. # Shocking claims this morning that | :01:37. | :01:40.
R Kelly is holding several young We'll bring you details | :01:41. | :01:44.
of the claims - which he denies - We're live until 11 this morning. | :01:45. | :01:48.
And after 10.30 we'll be speaking to Johanna Konta - | :01:49. | :02:09.
who's now ranked number 4 in the world, after her stunning | :02:10. | :02:11.
performance at Wimbledon this year. If you want to ask her a question, | :02:12. | :02:14.
do get in touch and we'll Use the hashtag VictoriaLIVE, | :02:15. | :02:17.
and If you text, you will be charged A BBC investigation has | :02:18. | :02:25.
found that only a small fraction of the money, | :02:26. | :02:32.
donated as part of the Grenfell Tower fire appeal, has | :02:33. | :02:36.
so far reached survivors Almost ?20 million has been | :02:37. | :02:38.
raised and 40,000 boxes But just half a million pounds | :02:39. | :02:41.
of that has so far been distributed to the families affected, | :02:42. | :02:48.
and there are concerns that the money isn't reaching | :02:49. | :02:50.
people quickly enough. Tom Burridge | :02:51. | :02:52.
reports. Some of the items we've | :02:53. | :03:00.
had through have been This is the Grenfell Tower Fire | :03:01. | :03:03.
Appeal in action, a Red Cross Donations in the green bags will be | :03:04. | :03:10.
sold in Red Cross shops. Brand-new items will go straight | :03:11. | :03:17.
back to survivors of the fire It's about turning all the different | :03:18. | :03:24.
donations we've had into cash which automatically will then go | :03:25. | :03:30.
to the appeal. To appreciate the scale | :03:31. | :03:41.
of donations, you had to fly through this London warehouse a week | :03:42. | :03:43.
after the fire. It's estimated 174 tonnes | :03:44. | :03:45.
of stuff was donated. So far they have sorted half of it, | :03:46. | :03:49.
and ten tonnes has gone No amount of money is enough for | :03:50. | :03:53.
the loved ones of those who died. Research by the BBC shows that | :03:54. | :03:59.
several appeals and charities have Some question why only a small part | :04:00. | :04:02.
of that has made it through. We feel that it's betraying | :04:03. | :04:11.
the public's generosity because they gave money to help | :04:12. | :04:13.
directly those who were affected and we're not too clear | :04:14. | :04:16.
that it's happening. It's like there's a filter | :04:17. | :04:17.
and organisations rather than individuals are getting | :04:18. | :04:19.
the financial support. Charities say the complexity | :04:20. | :04:26.
and the scale of what happened The thing about these things that | :04:27. | :04:28.
we've learnt from the 7/7 attacks and indeed from the response | :04:29. | :04:37.
to the Manchester attacks, is that it takes longer | :04:38. | :04:39.
than you might think for people to come forward to | :04:40. | :04:42.
seek their funding. I have forgiven, you know, | :04:43. | :04:49.
the bombers who did this to me... Thelma Stober lost her left foot | :04:50. | :04:59.
in the London 7/7 bombings. She received money | :05:00. | :05:01.
donated by the public. I used it to get myself daily | :05:02. | :05:03.
physiotherapy support at home. My determination was to walk again | :05:04. | :05:06.
as I was told the chances It took 15 months to distribute | :05:07. | :05:09.
all the money raised for victims Thelma is now a trustee | :05:10. | :05:14.
of the London Emergency Trust. It's distributing ?4.8 million | :05:15. | :05:17.
of the Grenfell appeal. So far, 16 people have | :05:18. | :05:19.
received payments. You're in a state | :05:20. | :05:30.
of total confusion. A lot of people are suffering | :05:31. | :05:32.
from post-traumatic stress. You're trying to understand what has | :05:33. | :05:34.
happened, the implications for your life going forward, | :05:35. | :05:36.
is changed forever. Even here, in rural Cheshire, | :05:37. | :05:42.
what happened in a London tower It's emotional even now, | :05:43. | :05:45.
just the thought of what's yet to be Whether donating an old top | :05:46. | :05:54.
or a tenner, people The challenge for charities | :05:55. | :06:00.
is ensuring it all benefits those tomorrow we will be live talking to | :06:01. | :06:19.

Campaigners are calling for an urgent suspension of vaginal | :06:50. | :06:52.
mesh implants in England after this programme revealed that hundreds | :06:53. | :06:55.
of women are living with chronic pain and complications. | :06:56. | :06:57.
The mesh implants are used by surgeons to treat organ prolapse | :06:58. | :07:00.
and urinary incontinence, which can be common | :07:01. | :07:01.
Mesh implants have already been suspended in Scotland. | :07:02. | :07:06.
The R singer R Kelly has denied allegations | :07:07. | :07:08.
that he is holding several young women in an "abusive cult". | :07:09. | :07:15.
A BuzzFeed report accuses the singer of brainwashing women, | :07:16. | :07:17.
who got closer to him in an effort to boost their musical careers. | :07:18. | :07:20.
The singer's lawyer said he would work "diligently | :07:21. | :07:22.
and forcibly to pursue his accusers and clear his name". | :07:23. | :07:31.
and forcibly to pursue his accusers Austerity may be starting | :07:32. | :07:32.
in England, according to a leading health expert. | :07:33. | :07:36.
Professor Sir Michael Marmot, from University College London, | :07:37. | :07:38.
says the rate of increase has almost "ground to a halt" since 2010. | :07:39. | :07:41.
His suggestion that it was "possible" that austerity | :07:42. | :07:43.
was affecting how long people live has been dismissed | :07:44. | :07:45.
Our health correspondent, Nick Triggle, reports. | :07:46. | :07:58.
Life expectancy has been rising for the last century, but now | :07:59. | :08:01.
a leading health expert is raising concerns the increases | :08:02. | :08:03.
Sir Michael Marmot, who has advised both the government | :08:04. | :08:06.
and World Health Organization, points out that the rate of increase | :08:07. | :08:10.
Historically, life expectancy at birth has risen by one year | :08:11. | :08:13.
for every five years for women and one year every 3.5 for men. | :08:14. | :08:19.
Since 2010, however, that has slowed to one year | :08:20. | :08:21.
for every ten for women and one for every six for men. | :08:22. | :08:25.
Sir Michael says the situation needs to be urgently looked at. | :08:26. | :08:34.
This is historically highly unusual because over a long period of time, | :08:35. | :08:37.
for 100 years, life expectancy has been improving, year on year | :08:38. | :08:40.
in Britain as it has in many, many, many, many other countries. | :08:41. | :08:42.
And now it has slowed, i's almost flat, which means that | :08:43. | :08:45.
we've fallen behind some of the healthier countries. | :08:46. | :08:59.
He says it's not possible to say exactly what had caused it | :09:00. | :09:02.
but he says austerity could be a factor and funding for the NHS | :09:03. | :09:05.
and social care in particular had been miserly. | :09:06. | :09:08.
Dementia is also likely to have played a role. | :09:09. | :09:10.
The Department of Health says it's providing funding to ensure life | :09:11. | :09:13.
expectancy continues to rise and the ageing population | :09:14. | :09:15.
There should be stronger regulation of advertisements which show men | :09:16. | :09:25.
failing at simple household tasks and women left to clean up - | :09:26. | :09:28.
according to the body that oversees advertising in the UK. | :09:29. | :09:31.
The Advertising Standards Authority has been reviewing its approach | :09:32. | :09:33.
to ads that feature stereotypical gender roles. | :09:34. | :09:37.
It concluded that such ads had "costs for individuals, | :09:38. | :09:39.
As a result, it says it will draw up new rules. | :09:40. | :09:47.
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge - along with Prince George | :09:48. | :09:50.
and Princess Charlotte - are continuing their tour of Poland. | :09:51. | :09:54.
Today they'll visit the Stutthof Concentration Camp | :09:55. | :10:02.
Last night, Prince William delivered a speech in Warsaw | :10:03. | :10:05.
in which he praised the country's courage, fortitude and bravery. | :10:06. | :10:11.
That's a summary of the latest BBC News - more at 9.30. | :10:12. | :10:21.
We are going to talk to Johanna Konta later. Now the sport. It was a | :10:22. | :10:31.
great day for Britain at the world paraathletics yesterday. Yes, | :10:32. | :10:34.
another great day. Good morning. Three more golds, that is 11 in | :10:35. | :10:40.
total. 20 medal overall so far, they only started on Friday. Two of those | :10:41. | :10:45.
11 golds so far, have come from Hannah Cockroft. She got the second | :10:46. | :10:52.
of those last night in the T 34 800 metres. She could win a third later | :10:53. | :11:02.
in the week as well. Cockroft is amazing. Nine world titles to go | :11:03. | :11:07.
with her five Paralympic gold medals. She could complete a treble | :11:08. | :11:12.
treble while not feeling great. She is short of breath. She says she | :11:13. | :11:18.
feels like she is smoking 100 cigarettes a day! That treble treble | :11:19. | :11:26.
could be sealed later. Sophie Kamlish won another gold and Olivia | :11:27. | :11:31.
Breen, a surprise, as she won the T38 long jump with a personal best. | :11:32. | :11:36.
Great Britain just second in the medals table. A little behind the | :11:37. | :11:43.
United States. Joe Root after being revered for his batting and | :11:44. | :11:46.
captaincy is on the rack after the collapse against South Africa. Yes, | :11:47. | :11:50.
welcome to the world of being England Captain Joe Root. That | :11:51. | :11:53.
century against South Africa in the first match of the series, crashing | :11:54. | :12:03.
down-to-earth, 133-3 out. Chase an improbable amount. They could last | :12:04. | :12:07.
two session, all out for that paltry amount and the major criticism | :12:08. | :12:11.
starts to flow and as you say, Michael Vaughan who is Root's friend | :12:12. | :12:17.
and mentor suggest England lack respect for Test cricket. Root says | :12:18. | :12:20.
he can't believe Vaughan said that and it is very unfair. The series is | :12:21. | :12:26.
level, but still those questions about the battle line up. There may | :12:27. | :12:32.
be changes and another captain in Nasser Hussain says some the | :12:33. | :12:37.
selections have been abysmal. We wait to see if there is any | :12:38. | :12:40.
improvement come the Third Test which starts next Thursday at the | :12:41. | :12:45.
Oval. Can the women save the gay? Yes, in a rematch of England against | :12:46. | :12:50.
South Africa, it is to come in the World Cup semifinal in Bristol and | :12:51. | :12:55.
they will attempt to exact some sort of revenge on the team who beat | :12:56. | :12:59.
England in the men's. South Africa will be the attempting to exact | :13:00. | :13:02.
revenge on the England women's team. These two met in the group stage | :13:03. | :13:07.
earlier on in the tournament. It was won impressively by England, the | :13:08. | :13:12.
same ground in Bristol, by 68 run, they will attempt to do the same. | :13:13. | :13:16.
These two have provided a good deal of runs in the tournament so far, | :13:17. | :13:20.
watch out for the South African bowling attack. They are | :13:21. | :13:24.
particularly good. Their opening fast bowlers. England may be | :13:25. | :13:27.
favourite for the match and they topped the group after six wins in a | :13:28. | :13:32.
row, they will be wary of what South Africa, a greatly improved team will | :13:33. | :13:37.
be able to provide. The winners, will play Australia or India, in the | :13:38. | :13:41.
final and that will be at Lord's. Thank you. More from Hugh throughout | :13:42. | :13:45.
the morning. This morning, fresh calls | :13:46. | :13:48.
for an urgent suspension of vaginal mesh implants in England after this | :13:49. | :13:51.
programme exclusively revealed hundreds of women are living | :13:52. | :13:53.
with chronic pain and complications following the minor procedure | :13:54. | :13:55.
to treat problems often Mesh implants have already been | :13:56. | :13:57.
suspended in Scotland and now campaigners are calling for the same | :13:58. | :14:04.
to happen in England. Back in April we brought | :14:05. | :14:12.
you the news that more than 800 women in the UK are taking legal | :14:13. | :14:14.
action against the NHS and It is used when women | :14:15. | :14:17.
have a prolapse or bladder incontinence, normally brought | :14:18. | :14:30.
on by childbirth, and it's often That's the same material used | :14:31. | :14:32.
to make this kind of drinks bottle. For most women, mesh implants work, | :14:33. | :14:39.
but around one in 11 experience problems when they disintegrate | :14:40. | :14:43.
or erode, leaving some in permanent Over the last five years, | :14:44. | :14:46.
I counted, actually, My husband has turned | :14:47. | :14:52.
into my carer and he is so much We haven't had sex for | :14:53. | :15:01.
four and a half years. Now we have learned more than 800 | :15:02. | :15:10.
women are taking legal action against the NHS and manufacturers | :15:11. | :15:13.
over the mesh implants and some want to see them banned | :15:14. | :15:15.
completely on the NHS. I want the procedure banned, | :15:16. | :15:19.
I want the material banned. Do you believe the NHS should | :15:20. | :15:28.
stop using these meshes? I do believe they should | :15:29. | :15:31.
stop using these meshes. Actually, here you should | :15:32. | :15:33.
be saying, "Honestly, we are able to tell you, | :15:34. | :15:36.
here is a device, here is the benefit, here | :15:37. | :15:43.
is the long-term harm." If you can't say that, | :15:44. | :15:48.
you shouldn't make it available. Ethicon, a subsidiary | :15:49. | :15:55.
of Johnson Johnson, one of the largest manufacturers, | :15:56. | :15:57.
says the implants have helped millions of women suffering | :15:58. | :15:59.
from stress urinary incontinence The UK regulatory body, the MHRA, | :16:00. | :16:01.
believes the benefits Dr Mark Slack is a surgeon | :16:02. | :16:04.
who carries out some types I have enormous sympathy | :16:05. | :16:08.
for the patients who A recent review in Scotland said | :16:09. | :16:12.
mesh implants shouldn't be routinely used for pelvic organ | :16:13. | :16:25.
prolapse, but critics called A separate review is under way | :16:26. | :16:28.
in England and Wales. The simple procedure could end up | :16:29. | :16:33.
costing the NHS tens of millions I am doubly incontinent | :16:34. | :16:36.
and I have no control over my bowel or my bladder, | :16:37. | :16:45.
so I will not leave the house Carol, let me ask | :16:46. | :16:48.
you about the impact I have got extensive nerve damage | :16:49. | :16:56.
in my left leg, in my foot, my hip. I am double incontinent, | :16:57. | :17:04.
bowel and bladder. I have got depression, severe, | :17:05. | :17:05.
that I have had to go and see an emergency counsellor, | :17:06. | :17:09.
and I have got fibromyalgia. I never foresaw that having | :17:10. | :17:11.
a 40-minute procedure twice That was back in April - | :17:12. | :17:13.
since then the campaign to suspend We can speak now to Debbie Waine | :17:14. | :17:25.
who has lost her mobility It's the frist time she's | :17:26. | :17:30.
ever spoken publicly Kath Sansom, campaigner | :17:31. | :17:36.

who is addressing a meeting of women, their families | :17:40. | :17:41.
and surgeons at parliament later. And, of course, we invited Ethicon - | :17:42. | :17:45.
a subsidiary of Johnson and Johnson who're the largest | :17:46. | :17:53.
manufacturers of mesh to come on this programme - | :17:54. | :17:54.
they said no. Some of what you hear during our | :17:55. | :17:56.
regulatory agency the MHRA. Some of what you hear during our | :17:57. | :18:04.
conversation will be graphic and frank as you would expect with such | :18:05. | :18:08.
a subject. Debbie, thank you for coming on the programme. You're | :18:09. | :18:13.
welcome. You can't walk. You use a mobility scooter? Yeah. You use | :18:14. | :18:18.
crutches. Yeah. You can't work. No. You are in chronic pain? Yes. And | :18:19. | :18:22.
you have recently been diagnosed with PTSD? Yes. As a result of this | :18:23. | :18:31.
small 20 minute procedure? Yes. Yes. Basically before I had the mesh in, | :18:32. | :18:37.
I was quite fit. I was active, walking the dog for hours, playing | :18:38. | :18:41.
squash and badminton with my children. It was a good life. And I | :18:42. | :18:47.
was at university trying to get a degree for photography and I had a | :18:48. | :18:53.
photography studio which I had to give up because of my mobility. I | :18:54. | :18:59.
had the mesh put in in 2013, and I had problems within an hour of | :19:00. | :19:04.
coming up from surgery. In terms of bleeding? I bled out and you can | :19:05. | :19:10.
imagine I'm lying on the bed and the blood is pouring over my legs. So | :19:11. | :19:16.
the doctor had to pack me with gaus or something to stop the bleeding | :19:17. | :19:21.
and that was horrendous. I believe that probably didn't help my | :19:22. | :19:25.
situation and the groin problems because I had TOT, it is connected | :19:26. | :19:30.
to the groin. And it has damaged my nerves. I had a partial removal by | :19:31. | :19:38.
the surgeon that put it in originally and four weeks later it | :19:39. | :19:44.
snapped and I felt it snap. It caused excruciating pain. My GP sent | :19:45. | :19:49.
me to the doctor and a doctor turned around and said, "You're | :19:50. | :19:52.
inContinent, what do you expect?" My legs were going into spasm. I asked | :19:53. | :19:57.
why are my legs going into spasm? They said there is nothing wrong | :19:58. | :20:00.
with you. It's not the tape. The tape is another name for the mesh, | :20:01. | :20:05.
isn't it? I got humiliated when she examined me. When she examined me, | :20:06. | :20:11.
she told me to cough. And my urine just flew across her arm. And she | :20:12. | :20:18.
got the hump. I didn't have anything to wipe myself down. I was treated | :20:19. | :20:27.
really bad. Fortunately, I found out about Miso kneel. The consultant | :20:28. | :20:32.
surgeon who has become practised in removing the mesh from women. Yes. | :20:33. | :20:37.
Can I ask, these are some personal questions. I know you feel OK | :20:38. | :20:42.
answering these to illustrate to our audience the kind of depth of this. | :20:43. | :20:46.
Can you, do you know when to go to the loo now? I have a silly rhyme in | :20:47. | :20:54.
my head. I say two cups of tea, go for a pee. I have to keep constantly | :20:55. | :21:00.
reminding myself because sometimes I forget. I can go eight or nine hours | :21:01. | :21:05.
without going if I forget. So, which is not good. It can cause | :21:06. | :21:15.
infections. I have to self catheterise to prevent infections. | :21:16. | :21:19.
My legs are in spasms. I am on horrendous pain medication. My | :21:20. | :21:23.
ability to concentrate, I have got brain fog all the time. And as a | :21:24. | :21:33.
result, of five operations, and this diagnosis of the PDST, now, you | :21:34. | :21:38.
effectively have ended up losing your home and your husband, is this | :21:39. | :21:44.
correct? Yes. Yes. My husband at the time couldn't look after me and I | :21:45. | :21:50.
was seriously poorly. He couldn't cope. So we separated and that was | :21:51. | :21:58.
it, but before we separated, when I saw the consultant, he recommended | :21:59. | :22:02.
that I try and make love to my husband even though he knew the tape | :22:03. | :22:07.
was coming out of my vagina at the time. So I did everything doctors | :22:08. | :22:12.
told me to do. What was that advice for? I really don't understand why. | :22:13. | :22:19.
Looking back, I should never have done it. We attempted to make love. | :22:20. | :22:28.
One penetration and my husband screamed out in pain. Because the | :22:29. | :22:34.
mesh... Had cut and scratched his penis and it was horrendous pain for | :22:35. | :22:37.
me as well and that was the worst thing ever and it felt so | :22:38. | :22:42.
humiliating and I just felt angry towards that doctor. | :22:43. | :22:50.
What do you think when you hear for example the MHRA, that's the | :22:51. | :22:53.
regulatory agency in this country saying to us, "We continue to see | :22:54. | :22:58.
that the evidence supports the use of these devices in the UK for the | :22:59. | :23:04.
treatment of the distressing conditions of incontentance and | :23:05. | :23:08.
organ prolapse and this is supported by the clinical community and | :23:09. | :23:13.
patients." I just wonder how many people are going to get crippled | :23:14. | :23:18.
before anyone listens to us? What we go through on a daily basis is a | :23:19. | :23:26.
nightmare. How can they say it's still beneficial? Let me bring in | :23:27. | :23:34.
Kath Sam son from Sling The Mesh. They say it is beneficial for most | :23:35. | :23:41.
women because it is? They say the benefits outweigh the risks, but | :23:42. | :23:43.
they don't know how many people are suffering because there is no | :23:44. | :23:50.
national register. 40% of surgeons report to their own database. The | :23:51. | :23:54.
reality is they don't know how many women are suffering. I have said on | :23:55. | :24:01.
this programme before, it is anything from 15%, 30%, 40%, nobody | :24:02. | :24:05.
actually knows. So you can't, I don't understand how they can say | :24:06. | :24:09.
the benefits outweigh the risks without having proper data to back | :24:10. | :24:13.
that up because no one knows how many women are out there like Debbie | :24:14. | :24:17.
on the really bad end of the scale, on perhaps not such a bad end of the | :24:18. | :24:21.
scale, they are perhaps suffering water infections and lost their sex | :24:22. | :24:24.
lives and don't understand why. There is a range of insidious mesh | :24:25. | :24:31.
complications. Owen Smith, you are a politician, what can you do to help | :24:32. | :24:35.
Debbie? Well, the reason you're broadcasting this today is because | :24:36. | :24:39.
we have got a lobby of Parliament and Debbie and 100 other women are | :24:40. | :24:43.
come to go Parliament, that's a meeting I have organised in | :24:44. | :24:46.
conjunction with Kath in order to raise the profile of this issue. | :24:47. | :24:50.
There is clearly a large problem, a greater problem we have anticipated | :24:51. | :24:56.
previously. It is true, that not all women suffer these adverse effects, | :24:57. | :25:00.
but those who do, have really grave effects, many of them, Debbie's | :25:01. | :25:05.
story is graphic and horrible for her, but it's actually not | :25:06. | :25:09.
untypical, I have heard lots and lots of similar stories relayed to | :25:10. | :25:13.
me in the last couple of weeks and if it's 10% of women who are | :25:14. | :25:19.
suffering the adverse events, that's 10% of 100,000 women who have had | :25:20. | :25:22.
the procedure over the last few years, that's surely too many and it | :25:23. | :25:25.
is enough for us to be thinking do we need to get to the bottom of how | :25:26. | :25:29.
many women have been affected and do we need to suspend the use of the | :25:30. | :25:32.
mesh until we have got a clear idea of how grave a problem it is? Well, | :25:33. | :25:37.
it has been suspended in Scotland. Are you saying it's a realistic | :25:38. | :25:40.
possibility that the same could happen for England and Wales and | :25:41. | :25:44.
Northern Ireland? It should be suspended until we have got to the | :25:45. | :25:47.
bottom of it. Northern Ireland has announced it will have an audit in | :25:48. | :25:51.
order to determine how many women have been affected there. There was | :25:52. | :25:56.
a period when this was being marketed really heavily as a simple | :25:57. | :25:59.
quick fix easy to do, you didn't need to be an expert surgeon in | :26:00. | :26:04.
order to implant one of these and it could solve the problem and for some | :26:05. | :26:10.
women, it has worked, but that proportion in whom it hasn't worked | :26:11. | :26:15.
the complications have been life changing and that can't be right. We | :26:16. | :26:21.
all know there are risks with surgery. We do, but I don't think | :26:22. | :26:29.
the risks were explained to the women. It is difficult to take these | :26:30. | :26:32.
things out and it wasn't properly explained. I don't think the | :26:33. | :26:39.
surgeons understood the degree of chronic pain, debilitating life | :26:40. | :26:42.
changing pain that some women can experience. I don't think they | :26:43. | :26:47.
understood how many women can suffer that complications and that's got to | :26:48. | :26:49.
call into question the continued use of it. Johnson Johnson who run | :26:50. | :26:57.
Ethicon. It is a subsidiary of Johnson Johnson, they tell us | :26:58. | :27:01.
calls to remove mesh products are not supported by clinical evidence | :27:02. | :27:05.
and research and would restrict access to important treatment | :27:06. | :27:10.
options for women suffering from certificate serious pelvic | :27:11. | :27:15.
conditions? It was marketed for pelvic organ prolapse. It has been | :27:16. | :27:20.
removed for the market for pelvic organ prolapse. The clin clael | :27:21. | :27:24.
guidelines have changed in respect of that. I think a similar thing is | :27:25. | :27:33.
happening with regard to stress related urinary incontent hans. I | :27:34. | :27:39.
think evidence is starting to show that these complications only emerge | :27:40. | :27:43.
over a decade and it has been a decade for many of the women since | :27:44. | :27:47.
the devices were inserted. Do you have any idea if this issue is on | :27:48. | :27:53.
England's Health Secretary's radar? I have no idea doubt that it's on | :27:54. | :27:57.
his radar unless he has got his head buried in the sand, he is looking at | :27:58. | :28:02.
this. There is an outstanding report coming from NHS England that should | :28:03. | :28:05.
give us some further clinical guidance and a view, they need to | :28:06. | :28:11.
get on with that. Why it hasn't been produced in its entirety over the | :28:12. | :28:15.
last couple of years, I don't know, but I'm anticipating that's going to | :28:16. | :28:19.
come out soon. It was due and there was an election called. Kath, do you | :28:20. | :28:23.
feel you are getting closer to seeing what you want which is a | :28:24. | :28:28.
suspension of the vaginal mesh implants in England and Wales and | :28:29. | :28:33.
Northern Ireland? We have a lobby in Parliament in a strong MP who | :28:34. | :28:36.
believes in our cause as we do. The media are interested. People are | :28:37. | :28:43.
realise that there isn't the evidence to back up that they are | :28:44. | :28:45.
saying it is safe for women. We're get there. We have made good | :28:46. | :28:49.
progress. Thank you all of you. Thank you for coming on the | :28:50. | :28:52.
programme. Thank you Debbie, thank you for talking to us. | :28:53. | :28:55.
An investigation by the Dogs Trust finds puppies illegally transported | :28:56. | :28:59.
into the UK illegally - sedated, and in baskets, | :29:00. | :29:01.
where their only source of air comes from holes poked through a cling | :29:02. | :29:04.
We'll be speaking to the Dogs Trust, to people who bought puppy farmed | :29:05. | :29:10.
dogs without realising and we'll meet Enid the bulldog. | :29:11. | :29:15.
R B singer R Kelly has denied reports that he's holding | :29:16. | :29:18.
We will bring you the full story after 10am. | :29:19. | :29:28.
Here's Joanna in the BBC Newsroom with a summary of today's news. | :29:29. | :29:32.
A BBC investigation has found that only a small | :29:33. | :29:35.
fraction of the money donated as part of the Grenfell | :29:36. | :29:38.
Tower fire appeal, has so far reached survivors | :29:39. | :29:40.
Almost ?20 million has been raised and 40,000 boxes | :29:41. | :29:46.
But less than ?800,000 has been given out so far. | :29:47. | :29:51.
An estimated 174 tonnes of items - such as clothing - were donated | :29:52. | :29:54.
and are still being sorted by the British Red Cross. | :29:55. | :29:58.
Theresa May has urged Conservative MPs and ministers to end | :29:59. | :30:01.
what she called the "backbiting" that has split the party | :30:02. | :30:05.
At a reception in the Commons last night, the Prime Minister | :30:06. | :30:09.
warned that the choice was her or Jeremy Corbyn | :30:10. | :30:11.
It's a call for unity that she's expected to repeat this morning | :30:12. | :30:17.
Campaigners are calling for an urgent suspension of vaginal | :30:18. | :30:22.
mesh implants in England after this programme revealed that hundreds | :30:23. | :30:24.
of women are living with chronic pain and complications. | :30:25. | :30:28.
The mesh implants are used by surgeons to treat organ prolapse | :30:29. | :30:31.
and urinary incontinence which can be common | :30:32. | :30:33.
Mesh implants have already been suspended in Scotland. | :30:34. | :30:39.
The R singer R Kelly has denied allegations | :30:40. | :30:41.
that he is holding several young women in an "abusive cult". | :30:42. | :30:44.
A BuzzFeed report accuses the singer of brainwashing women, | :30:45. | :30:46.
who got closer to him in an effort to boost their musical careers. | :30:47. | :30:49.
The singer's lawyer said he would work "diligently | :30:50. | :30:51.
and forcibly to pursue his accusers and clear his name". | :30:52. | :31:02.
Life expectancy has been rising for the last century, but now | :31:03. | :31:05.
a leading health expert is raising concerns the increases | :31:06. | :31:07.
Sir Michael Marmot, who has advised both the government | :31:08. | :31:10.
and World Health Organization, points out that the rate of increase | :31:11. | :31:13.
Historically, life expectancy at birth has risen by one year | :31:14. | :31:17.
for every five years for women and one year every 3.5 for men. | :31:18. | :31:20.
Sir Michael says the situation needs to be urgently looked at. | :31:21. | :31:24.
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge - along with Prince George | :31:25. | :31:27.
and Princess Charlotte - are continuing their tour of Poland. | :31:28. | :31:29.
It's part of a five day tour to Eastern Europe. | :31:30. | :31:31.
Last night, Prince William praised Poland's courage, | :31:32. | :31:33.
fortitude and bravery in a speech in Warsaw. | :31:34. | :31:35.
On the agenda today is a trip to the former | :31:36. | :31:37.
Stutthof Concentration Camp in Gdansk. | :31:38. | :31:43.
That's a summary of the latest BBC News - more at 10.00. | :31:44. | :31:52.
Latest inflation figures just out. It fell to 2.6% in June from 2.in | :31:53. | :32:03.
That is according to the Office for National Statistics. | :32:04. | :32:05.
Here's some sport now, with Hugh Ferris. | :32:06. | :32:07.
World Cup final is the prize on offer for England's women. They face | :32:08. | :32:17.
South Africa. After straight six straight win, the match starts in | :32:18. | :32:21.
around an hour's time. They will hope to do better than the men, | :32:22. | :32:26.
beaten by South Africa in the Second Test at Trent Bridge. The defeat led | :32:27. | :32:30.
to suggestions from a former England Captain, the current team don't | :32:31. | :32:33.
respect Test cricket. And three more goals for Great | :32:34. | :32:38.
Britain, the world paraathletic chap CAP champions in London. One | :32:39. | :32:45.
courtesy of Hannah Cockroft. She is one away from a famous golden treble | :32:46. | :32:51.
treble. Britain have 11 in total. Their second in the medals table. We | :32:52. | :32:56.
have more and you have Johanna Konta after 10.00. We do. If you want to | :32:57. | :33:01.
ask her a question send me an e-mail. | :33:02. | :33:04.
Next this morning - claims that underage puppies | :33:05. | :33:06.
are being transported across Europe and into the UK illegally - | :33:07. | :33:08.
sedated, in baskets or boxes, where the only air comes from holes | :33:09. | :33:11.
poked through a cling film lid, and with their umbilical | :33:12. | :33:15.
An investigation by the Dog's Trust, an animal welfare charity, | :33:16. | :33:21.
has gathered undercover footage showing the shocking practices used | :33:22. | :33:23.
by puppy smugglers to sell them to dog-lovers here in the UK. | :33:24. | :35:05.
The Dogs Trust is calling on the government to address the issue. | :35:06. | :35:08.
We can speak to Runa Hanaghan, the Deputy Veterinary Director | :35:09. | :35:12.
for the Dog's Trust, Peter Laurie, the Battersea Dogs | :35:13. | :35:16.
Home Deputy chief executive and Enid, a bulldog puppy brought | :35:17. | :35:22.
to the home as a stray - it's thought she was | :35:23. | :35:24.
Matt Gooding owned West Highland terrier Pippin, for a matter | :35:25. | :35:35.
of weeks before he died, after being bred in a puppy farm. | :35:36. | :35:40.
Hayley Whillier bought puppy Marley which died of injuries | :35:41. | :35:43.
Welcome all of you. How do you react to the footage that the dog trust | :35:44. | :35:57.
have obtained? The footage is really scary when you look at how these | :35:58. | :36:02.
breeders are operating, and how the trade is coming across to the UK. I | :36:03. | :36:08.
think our undercover investigation highlights the whole chain of events | :36:09. | :36:14.
that. Cops through, and certainly I know dog's trust have put together | :36:15. | :36:18.
an animation to convey that to the general public, to make it clear as | :36:19. | :36:21.
to where these puppies are starting from and what is happening on their | :36:22. | :36:27.
journey across to the UK. To be sold to unsuspecting members of the | :36:28. | :36:35.
public here. . It is is important we are able to highlight the issues we | :36:36. | :36:41.
are seeing. What can we do about corrupt vets abroad? By lobbying the | :36:42. | :36:44.
Government through your MP, what we are asking people to do is to add | :36:45. | :36:49.
weight to our argument. So what, say what? Do what? To change how the UK | :36:50. | :36:54.
is managing these animals coming into this country. It has been | :36:55. | :36:59.
shown... We developed quarantine back in 2012, six months quarantine, | :37:00. | :37:03.
that went, has that contributed to this puppy smuggling to you any? It | :37:04. | :37:10.
has. We saw in the first year of that relaxation of the rules, we saw | :37:11. | :37:15.
a huge increase in the number of dogs coming into the UK, about 60%, | :37:16. | :37:21.
from 2014 we had our first investigation, following that in | :37:22. | :37:25.
2015, the Lithuanian Government did change some of the rules for the | :37:26. | :37:30.
vets in Lithuania. But that has highlighted in this report perhaps | :37:31. | :37:34.
how people are getting round the rules again by perhaps not declaring | :37:35. | :37:40.
the puppies and that I are coming n vets are supplying sedatives for the | :37:41. | :37:44.
transporters to give to the puppies before they come over so they don't | :37:45. | :37:48.
have to declare them. There are a lot of loopholes and we are | :37:49. | :37:51.
concerned about that. I am not clear what you want, you want the public | :37:52. | :37:54.
to lobby their MP to do what, what is the top of your list? In order | :37:55. | :38:00.
to... There are so many issues here, where do you start? We want to | :38:01. | :38:05.
tighten the borders we have, tighten the checks that need to come in | :38:06. | :38:09.
through the ports, we have been working with Dover port, we have | :38:10. | :38:14.
been working with them with our puppy pilot, and that has actually | :38:15. | :38:18.
helped manage to check a lot of these puppies and to try and bring | :38:19. | :38:21.
them through our care. Those puppies otherwise would not have been looked | :38:22. | :38:26.
after in the way we do. It is not do with the numbers of border | :38:27. | :38:29.
officials? There is is a lot of things we are looking for, so one of | :38:30. | :38:34.
the top lines is asking that the carriers of these animals, so this | :38:35. | :38:37.
is the boats and Eurostar are not the people responsible for the | :38:38. | :38:40.
check, we are asking for the Government to step in, and to be the | :38:41. | :38:43.
people responsible for those checks. In order to provide weekend and out | :38:44. | :38:47.
of hour checks, because at the moment, we are not seeing those | :38:48. | :38:51.
regularly. Sure and that might be a money issue. Let me bring in Peter | :38:52. | :38:56.
and Matt and Hayley. Tell us about Enid. I can hear her sort of, is | :38:57. | :39:04.
that a happy grumble. I think so. She is fairly comfortable. He is a | :39:05. | :39:09.
different dog to the one who came into Battersea in January this year. | :39:10. | :39:13.
You think from a puppy farm. We are almost certain, she was displaying | :39:14. | :39:17.
horrific injuries are and health conditions, Like what? Her hips are | :39:18. | :39:23.
badly deformed. She can't walk or sit properly. She has a heart | :39:24. | :39:28.
condition and her skin was more like a reptile and that a dog. It was | :39:29. | :39:34.
scaly and inflamed. Our staff worked wonders and we found her a wonderful | :39:35. | :39:39.
home with one of my colleagues. Charities like Battersea, we are | :39:40. | :39:43.
able to help as many as we can, not every dog has that second chance. | :39:44. | :39:48.
Sure. What is happening on a puppy farm then, a poorly run puppy farm | :39:49. | :39:54.
which meant she has so many complications? Breeders are putting | :39:55. | :39:59.
profit before animal welfare and flooding the market with badly bred | :40:00. | :40:03.
puppies. What does that mean? It means in many cases inbreeding so | :40:04. | :40:09.
you might have a father bred with a daughter, and that is just | :40:10. | :40:12.
exaggerating genetic conditions that are causing terrible health problem, | :40:13. | :40:17.
but also, terrible welfare condition, the state of some of the | :40:18. | :40:20.
farms is too shocking to believe really and the dogs that are coming | :40:21. | :40:25.
out of there have a tough life ahead and the worst possible start. So it | :40:26. | :40:30.
is the scale of the operation and it's a fact that unsuspecting | :40:31. | :40:34.
members of the British public are being drawn towards designer breeds, | :40:35. | :40:40.
the bulldogs and pulling pugs and so on and the dogs are generating | :40:41. | :40:45.
terrible problems later. You would look at Enid and wouldn't have a | :40:46. | :40:50.
clue. Let me bring in Matt and Hayley. Matt, tell us about when you | :40:51. | :40:57.
bought Pippen. What happens to him? Well, we went to a farm, run by what | :40:58. | :41:02.
seemed to be lovely people, there was the mother there, the Bishop | :41:03. | :41:08.
there, with -- bitch with three other brothers and sister, it looked | :41:09. | :41:14.
like a proper breeder's house. But there was certain things resting on | :41:15. | :41:20.
the back of my mind. I have seen on BBC, Watchdog, about puppy farms | :41:21. | :41:24.
then and the in the back of my mind I kept thinking puppy farm, but, I | :41:25. | :41:28.
don't know, I was trying to knock things back, I was trying to look | :41:29. | :41:33.
past that, not trying to be too focussed on puppy farm, asking lots | :41:34. | :41:40.
of questions, even bent down and went to the bitch's the mother's | :41:41. | :41:45.
belly, thinking is that dog or a bitch. You heard stories about how | :41:46. | :41:52.
people, pups take dogs in with the pups to make it look like a little | :41:53. | :42:01.
family. Everything seemed OK. Two days later he got diagnosed with a | :42:02. | :42:05.
heart condition and three weeks later she passed away unfortunately. | :42:06. | :42:10.
And do, can I... In and out of vets all the time. Numerous thing, | :42:11. | :42:16.
diarrhoea, blood in her excrement. Coughing. Seemed like kennel cough, | :42:17. | :42:24.
lots of issue, not the thing you should happen with a puppy, with a | :42:25. | :42:29.
new life with family, it should be joyous, enjoyable times. Not going | :42:30. | :42:33.
back-and-forth to the vet. Do you mind me asking how much you paid for | :42:34. | :42:42.
Pippen. ?450. Hayley tell us what happened with Marley. We dent down, | :42:43. | :42:48.
we saw an advert for Marley on gum tree. Went down to visit the puppy, | :42:49. | :42:55.
she was the only one left, we were told she was 11 weeks, then we were | :42:56. | :42:59.
told she was 13 weeks when we got her. Obviously we were looking for a | :43:00. | :43:05.
younger puppy. She was in a pen by herself, which was, you know, sort | :43:06. | :43:12.
of rung alarm bells but she was so cute, and, all these things like, | :43:13. | :43:15.
all these niggling feelings go out of your mind when you see this | :43:16. | :43:19.
puppy, you get this feeling you are rescuing them. You know, I am going | :43:20. | :43:25.
to pause you, both you and Matt had doubts. You both expressed those | :43:26. | :43:31.
this morning, and, and still went ahead, I mean clearly that, you | :43:32. | :43:40.
know, that is a regret. Think a lot of the time these people prey on | :43:41. | :43:46.
that particular thing, like, they see that you love that puppy, as | :43:47. | :43:50.
soon as you see it. If that makes sense. I have a couple of comments | :43:51. | :43:55.
from people listening to the conversation round the country. | :43:56. | :43:57.
Ahead, I mean clearly that, you know, that is a regret. Think a lot | :43:58. | :44:00.
of the time these people prey on that particular thing, like, they | :44:01. | :44:02.
see that you love that puppy, as soon as you see it. If that makes | :44:03. | :44:05.
sense. I have a couple of comments from people listening to the | :44:06. | :44:07.
conversation round the country. Richie says "Dog lovers don't buy | :44:08. | :44:10.
dogs like this." People who want a dog to flatter their vanity and want | :44:11. | :44:13.
a dog as a fashion statement buy dogs like this. This. Jerome says | :44:14. | :44:15.
the dog Bayers are not dog lovers if they don't take the time to ensure | :44:16. | :44:18.
where the dog has come from. What do you say to that Hayley? I think in | :44:19. | :44:21.
this circumstances we got caught out. We made a big mistake. But, at | :44:22. | :44:30.
the time, it wasn't something that you thought of, obviously it's a big | :44:31. | :44:35.
thing now, you know you know. I don't think that necessarily it | :44:36. | :44:42.
depend on breed, or what type of dog it is. What would you say Matt? We | :44:43. | :44:48.
didn't want a fashion statement. We wanted a healthy puppy to join our | :44:49. | :44:52.
family. As far as I was concerned we did everything we could. We went on | :44:53. | :45:00.
the RSPC website, to ask the right sort of question, to look at the | :45:01. | :45:07.
environment, and, in the back of my mind I was concerned it was a puppy | :45:08. | :45:13.
farm, but, was that just a, a thought that was lingering that was | :45:14. | :45:17.
lingering from the TV shows? I didn't want to put a downer, I | :45:18. | :45:21.
wanted a happy puppy and healthy puppy. Of course you did. | :45:22. | :45:28.
Are there well run puppy farms? I have not found a well run puppy farm | :45:29. | :45:34.
yet I will be honest. My advice to anyone wanting to acquire a dog is | :45:35. | :45:39.
to source it from a reputable organisation. If you are determined | :45:40. | :45:44.
to get a puppy from a breeder, do your research. Check the paperwork. | :45:45. | :45:49.
Meet the puppy with its mother. See the puppy interact with its mother. | :45:50. | :45:52.
Do everything you can to ensure the puppy you're buying has been | :45:53. | :46:00.
responsibly bred and reared. Sorr they are too clever now. Sorry to | :46:01. | :46:05.
interrupt. Go ahead. They are getting clever. You scom on the TV | :46:06. | :46:11.
like this, you give everybody the advice, but these alleged breeders | :46:12. | :46:15.
are thinking right, how can we cover our tracks now? We will do that like | :46:16. | :46:19.
they did to me amy family. They made the environment look like everything | :46:20. | :46:22.
was a happy breeding home environment. Everything was perfect. | :46:23. | :46:26.
Answering the right sort of questions. One or two little falls, | :46:27. | :46:32.
but just putting that to the back of your mind thinking, I'm looking too | :46:33. | :46:36.
much at that WAG show the other week. What would you say to Matt? I | :46:37. | :46:40.
have a lot of sympathy for Matt and lots of people have been caught out. | :46:41. | :46:46.
The farmers and the dealers are trying all sorts of tricks to fool | :46:47. | :46:50.
buyers. It is a competitive market and a lot of it is being conducted | :46:51. | :46:55.
online. Take great care and the best place for a dog is a rescue. That's | :46:56. | :47:03.
the best source for it. Thank you very much for coming on the | :47:04. | :47:14.
programme. Enid was so well-behaved. Thank you very much. | :47:15. | :47:17.

There are calls this morning for children on the poverty line | :47:31. | :47:35.
to be offered free meals outside of term-time. | :47:36. | :47:40.
As summer holidays begin across the UK MPs are warning that | :47:41. | :47:43.
as many as three million children could go hungry this summer. | :47:44. | :47:46.
Some local councils in deprived areas of Scotland and Wales provide | :47:47. | :47:48.
free meals for children outside of school terms and there | :47:49. | :47:51.
are calls for this to be rolled out nationally. | :47:52. | :47:54.
In Thanet in Kent, the charity End Child Poverty, claim 34% | :47:55. | :47:57.
of children live below the poverty line. | :47:58. | :48:04.
There, we met mum of four Kerry, who didn't want | :48:05. | :48:06.
She's worried about how she'll cope during the holidays. | :48:07. | :48:21.
Wow, you lot have really caned this cheese. | :48:22. | :48:23.
For lunch, it would be, again, something basic. | :48:24. | :48:34.
Some cucumber for a bit of nourishment. | :48:35. | :48:37.
So, you've got your crisps and you've got... | :48:38. | :48:42.
We need to get some fruit in, the cheapest fruit, | :48:43. | :48:44.
I'm also going through a separation which means a new claim | :48:45. | :49:01.
My housing benefit has been stopped, so I am going to hugely | :49:02. | :49:10.
At the moment, how much do I have to spend? | :49:11. | :49:17.
I look at it and I think I actually don't have anything, but... | :49:18. | :49:26.
Yeah, my shopping bill has got down to about ?30 a week. | :49:27. | :49:29.
For five of us - four children and myself. | :49:30. | :49:37.
That is going to actually double the balance of what I need | :49:38. | :49:43.
At least ?50 a shop, I'm going to need. | :49:44. | :49:46.
We're in one of the most deprived areas in the UK. | :49:47. | :50:01.
The huge problem we have got around here is the lack of employment. | :50:02. | :50:05.
Up to half of the children in this area are living in poverty. | :50:06. | :50:08.
How are families around here going to cope over the summer? | :50:09. | :50:13.
I think it's going to be something that comes up | :50:14. | :50:15.
It's all happening the same week as we've got universal | :50:16. | :50:23.
credits being brought in, being enroled into the Thanet area | :50:24. | :50:25.
That is going to be another huge shock. | :50:26. | :50:28.
If somebody, a family, needs to make a fresh claim | :50:29. | :50:31.
during the summer holidays, they are going to be | :50:32. | :50:33.
So, do you think children around here are going to go | :50:34. | :50:45.
I think a lot of people wouldn't want to admit they can't | :50:46. | :50:57.
It will be the working poor that suffer too. | :50:58. | :51:03.
But it is just so hard and so gut wrenching and stressful, | :51:04. | :51:08.
extra worries put on top of extra worries, and this is | :51:09. | :51:13.
There's so little support for so many. | :51:14. | :51:19.
With these guys, they don't obviously see the... | :51:20. | :51:24.
I don't want them to see the panic of how desperate | :51:25. | :51:27.
It's not as some politicians will say, to buy a new widescreen TV. | :51:28. | :51:36.
We're not saving pennies for anything like that. | :51:37. | :51:38.
We are saving to buy butter, milk and bread, | :51:39. | :51:40.
and it is literally as tight as that. | :51:41. | :51:45.
Let's talk to Frank Field a Labour MP who chairs the All Party | :51:46. | :51:50.
He wants councils to be made responsible for free | :51:51. | :51:54.
Erica Martin, who has two children, an 11-year-old boy | :51:55. | :52:01.
She lives with her partner who is a carer. | :52:02. | :52:05.
She receives income support and tax credits and reckons after housing | :52:06. | :52:08.
costs she has about ?140 a week to live on for her family of four. | :52:09. | :52:13.
Welcome both of you. Erika, I know you get free school meals during | :52:14. | :52:19.
term time. What happens during the holidays? Well, during the holidays, | :52:20. | :52:26.
there is an organisation called the St James Centre who offer free meal | :52:27. | :52:29.
to say anybody. They offer breakfast and lunch. It takes the strain off | :52:30. | :52:35.
most people. And that is for anybody whether they are working or not | :52:36. | :52:40.
working. So it's really helpful. And if that wasn't there, if the St | :52:41. | :52:44.
James' centre wasn't there, what would you do in the holidays? Just | :52:45. | :52:51.
try and spread the meals out and work out what, how we can sort of | :52:52. | :52:56.
eat the best way, but it's the same for anybody I think. There is a lot | :52:57. | :53:01.
of struggles in the suller holidays with days out Arthings like that so | :53:02. | :53:05.
you need to work it out the best you can. Let me bring in Frank Field | :53:06. | :53:11.
then. A report from a group of MPs this year talked about three million | :53:12. | :53:15.
children being hungry during the summer holidays. Some people won't | :53:16. | :53:19.
believe it. They will say look, we live in the fifth richest economy in | :53:20. | :53:23.
the world. This is Britain. This is 2017, come on, you can always feed | :53:24. | :53:27.
your kids. What do you say to those people? They should be sceptical and | :53:28. | :53:32.
push MPs when they produce figures like that. We have had the long-term | :53:33. | :53:38.
changes occurring, the bottom of the labour market has fallen out. All | :53:39. | :53:40.
the welfare cuts have been on families, pensioners have been | :53:41. | :53:45.
protected and pensioners have never been before off as a group than they | :53:46. | :53:53.
are now and we heard about the St James' Centre in Birkenhead, during | :53:54. | :53:58.
the school holidays, voluntary bodies feed 2,000 children and over | :53:59. | :54:03.
the last year, thanks to largely supplies from His Church we have | :54:04. | :54:07.
provided 200,000 breakfasts for children. So, it is a topsy-turvy | :54:08. | :54:13.
world. You would have thought fifth or sixth richest country in the | :54:14. | :54:18.
world, and yet, some children go to bed hungry and get up hungry and | :54:19. | :54:24.
take the hunger to school. We are trying to make sure during the term | :54:25. | :54:28.
time that children are well fed, but saying to the Government you have a | :54:29. | :54:33.
duty now to require local authorities to co-ordinate what | :54:34. | :54:43.
we're trying to do in Birkenhead and Feeding Britain is doing this | :54:44. | :54:48.
elsewhere in the country. Local authorities... They haven't got any | :54:49. | :54:55.
money. Their budgets are stretched. They decide their priorities. You | :54:56. | :54:59.
would organise this is a priority. It would be ring-fenced so they | :55:00. | :55:03.
couldn't go and spend it on something else. Feeding children | :55:04. | :55:08.
during the school holidays when we know that numbers going to foodbanks | :55:09. | :55:12.
goes up. One little girl last summer came to one of our projects and | :55:13. | :55:17.
because we always provide fun with the meals, because middle-class kids | :55:18. | :55:20.
thank god get fun during the holidays, why shouldn't the poorest | :55:21. | :55:24.
children get that, she said I am so hungry, might I come in, I don't | :55:25. | :55:28.
mind not having the fun, but may I have the food please? How do you | :55:29. | :55:33.
react to that? Well, it is gut wrenching and redoubling the | :55:34. | :55:37.
efforts, not only in Birkenhead, but making sure that we can get that | :55:38. | :55:41.
service rolled out over the whole country. Not again for the local | :55:42. | :55:44.
authorities to provide, but they have a duty to make sure like we've | :55:45. | :55:51.
done throughout feeding Britain projects that we combine voluntary | :55:52. | :55:56.
bodies who have been terrific in Birkenhead, are given the resources | :55:57. | :56:05.
to make sure that every child, even though we provide 2,000 meals during | :56:06. | :56:09.
the school holidays, there was that little girl turning up, she hent | :56:10. | :56:16.
been covered saying, "Can I come in, I'm hungry?" You will have heard | :56:17. | :56:20.
some say it is because parents can't budget properly? There are clearly | :56:21. | :56:26.
parents who couldn't give a toss and it is ludicrous to deny and you | :56:27. | :56:30.
wonder why the hell they have got children and then there are others | :56:31. | :56:34.
who are at their wits end trying to do their best by their children. Who | :56:35. | :56:42.
are driven almost mad by the difficulties of budgeting | :56:43. | :56:44.
particularly when the Government takes money off by sanction. | :56:45. | :56:49.
Particularly we are now at the almost at the end of this of we hope | :56:50. | :56:54.
a period of welfare cuts for families. As I say pensioners had a | :56:55. | :57:00.
good deal, but those with children have seen their real living | :57:01. | :57:05.
standards cut and we have got all the evidence one would wish to see | :57:06. | :57:09.
before particularly from teachers in schools who have been providing in | :57:10. | :57:13.
Birkenhead breakfasts out of their own money now actually signing up | :57:14. | :57:20.
for the actual supplies, bodies like His Church provide so they can | :57:21. | :57:26.
provide breakfasts free. We are after getting the Government to do | :57:27. | :57:31.
its duty. A viewer on fwirt says, "The true | :57:32. | :57:35.
legacy of the crash caused by bankers is three million kids in | :57:36. | :57:41.
poverty. They are the victims. ." Jackie on Twitter, "We are saving | :57:42. | :57:45.
for butter, bread and milk. This Government is heartless and I'm | :57:46. | :57:47.
utterly, utterly ashamed of it." A spokesperson for the Department | :57:48. | :57:50.
for Work and Pensions told us: "There are record numbers | :57:51. | :57:52.
of people in work, and we've ?90 billion is spent supporting | :57:53. | :57:55.
people who are out of work, disabled or a carer, | :57:56. | :57:58.
bringing up a family Frank Field thank you very much and | :57:59. | :58:13.
Erika Martin, thank you. Thank you for your comments on puppy | :58:14. | :58:17.
farm and where you buy puppies from and on the campaign to get mesh | :58:18. | :58:21.
implants suspended in England and Wales and Northern Ireland. | :58:22. | :58:24.
That reaches the Westminster Parliament today. Already been | :58:25. | :58:27.
suspended in Scotland as you will know if you have been watching our | :58:28. | :58:31.
programme over the last few months. Marie on e-mail says, "I have had | :58:32. | :58:35.
two mesh operations on my bladder and now I'm concerned about what I | :58:36. | :58:38.
need to do, what is the alternative?" Alison says, "Why does | :58:39. | :58:43.
the NHS not look at best practise elsewhere? Is it about cost saving? | :58:44. | :58:47.
I Monday wonder how ed operations would be avoided by the French | :58:48. | :58:51.
policy of routine physiotherapy for new mums?" And Hilary has e-mailed, | :58:52. | :58:58.
"18 years ago, I had two pregnancy which left me with a few incouldn't | :58:59. | :59:07.
tentance problems. Thank god I was offered intensive physio. The | :59:08. | :59:12.
exercises which I do have almost eliminated my problems and having | :59:13. | :59:15.
seen your previous coverage on the subject, I have cancelled both of my | :59:16. | :59:20.
corrective ops after a lot of sole searching. It didn't seem worth the | :59:21. | :59:27.
risks. " On puppy farms and the illegal breeding and transporting of | :59:28. | :59:34.
puppies from Eastern Europe, Donna texts this, "I have e-mailed my MP | :59:35. | :59:37.
whilst watching your programme. It breaks my heart. This is too cruel. | :59:38. | :59:41.
Thank you for highlighting this and telling us how to help end the cruel | :59:42. | :59:46.
poupy farms." Thank you for those. We will bring you the latest news | :59:47. | :59:50.
and sport in a moment. Before that, the weather. Good morning. Yesterday | :59:51. | :59:56.
temperatures got up to 27 Celsius in the south. Today we could see the | :59:57. | :59:59.
temperature reaching about 30 Celsius. | :00:00. | :00:05.
This morning, it started off cloudy. Some hazy sunshine out there. This | :00:06. | :00:09.
was the scene in Warwickshire a short time ago, but there is | :00:10. | :00:12.
sunshine particularly across the far south of England and across Scotland | :00:13. | :00:14.
and Northern Ireland. Some blue skies here as well. Another warm and | :00:15. | :00:20.
sunny day, but later ob, the risk of some storms. These storms are just | :00:21. | :00:25.
developing now actually across the Bay of Biscay and Britney. You | :00:26. | :00:31.
notice the oranges developing. Temperatures getting up to about 20, | :00:32. | :00:36.
21 Celsius in the southment for the rest of this morning, the cloud we | :00:37. | :00:39.
have got in central areas will thin or break up to give sunny spells, | :00:40. | :00:44.
but by far the west best of the sunshine is across Scotland and | :00:45. | :00:48.
Northern Ireland. Here with the blue skies, temperatures getting up to 25 | :00:49. | :00:51.
or 26 Celsius in Western Scotland and Northern Ireland. | :00:52. | :00:56.
A bit fresher along the North Sea coasts. The heat really building | :00:57. | :01:01.
across the south. We could see temperatures up to 29 and 30 | :01:02. | :01:05.
Celsius. But by this stage, we will start to see showers moving in | :01:06. | :01:09.
across the south-west. Those turning increasingly thundery as we go | :01:10. | :01:10.
through this evening and tonight. wanted a happy puppy and healthy | :01:11. | :01:16.
puppy. Of course you did. There you catch a shower there will | :01:17. | :01:24.
be strong winds, torrential rain as the thund thunderstorms move their | :01:25. | :01:28.
way northwards. Overnight temperatures no lower than to 18 C. | :01:29. | :01:32.
On Wednesday, the thunderstorms still a feature of the weather. This | :01:33. | :01:36.
time in northern area, gradually moving further into Scotland, and | :01:37. | :01:41.
the meantime, more rain spreads into Northern Ireland, gradually moving | :01:42. | :01:44.
eastwards, elsewhere, one or two showers round but still hot across | :01:45. | :01:49.
the south-east, temperatures 30, 31, maybe 32, but just turning that bit | :01:50. | :01:54.
fresher in northern and western area, 18-20 degrees here, as we go | :01:55. | :01:58.
into Thursday, we have this cold front, which is moving east ward, | :01:59. | :02:03.
behind it, fresher air, and that is fresher air will filter in across | :02:04. | :02:07.
all parts during Thursday. Early morning rain clearing away, more | :02:08. | :02:11.
rain spreading into the west but look at the temperatures, 16-22 | :02:12. | :02:16.
degree f you don't like the heat, Thursday certainly turning fresher, | :02:17. | :02:20.
fresher still on Friday but the risk of heavy rain in northern around | :02:21. | :02:25.
western areas that will move south and east ward: Bye. | :02:26. | :02:30.

Campaigners are calling for an urgent suspension of vaginal | :05:02. | :05:03.
mesh implants in England after this programme revealed that hundreds | :05:04. | :05:06.
of women are living with chronic pain and complications. | :05:07. | :05:08.
The mesh implants are used by surgeons to treat organ prolapse | :05:09. | :05:11.
and urinary incontinence which can be common | :05:12. | :05:20.
Campaigners are calling for further research into the scale of the | :05:21. | :05:24.
problem. The reality is they don't know how | :05:25. | :05:29.
many women are suffering, I have said before, I have seen reports | :05:30. | :05:35.
that say it is anything from is a %, 30%, 40%, you, nobody knows, so, you | :05:36. | :05:39.
can't, I don't understand how they can say the Ben fights outweigh the | :05:40. | :05:43.
risk without having proper data to back it up. | :05:44. | :05:53.

unity that she is expected to repeat this morning when she meets the | :06:02. | :06:02.

R singer R Kelly has denied allegations that he is holding | :08:42. | :08:44.
several young women in an "abusive cult". | :08:45. | :08:45.
# I believe I can fly # I believe I can touch the sky | :08:46. | :09:03.
# I think about it every night and day | :09:04. | :09:04.
# Spread my wings and fly away. # A BuzzFeed report accuses the singer | :09:05. | :09:06.
of brainwashing women, who got closer to him in an effort | :09:07. | :09:10.
to boost their musical careers. .The 50 year old has faced previous | :09:11. | :09:13.
accusations of sexual misconduct, His lawyer says on these latest | :09:14. | :09:15.
allegations, he'll work "diligently and forcibly to pursue his accusers | :09:16. | :09:22.
and clear his name". We should be clear that as adults, | :09:23. | :09:29.
these woman are free to consent to any form of relationship and that | :09:30. | :09:32.
police welfare checks in Illinois and Georgia did not lead | :09:33. | :09:35.
to any action being taken. The families of one of the women has | :09:36. | :09:38.
called for her to come home. Release these girls. And put them | :09:39. | :09:52.
back where they belong. My daughter was off in college at the time, and | :09:53. | :09:58.
she was, I haven't seen her since. I have pictures of where the house | :09:59. | :10:03.
was, inside this house where he resided, where rooms set up for like | :10:04. | :10:07.
a hotel for the girls, to stay in and he also had a black room, where | :10:08. | :10:12.
he had, where they do different sexual acts in and he had the | :10:13. | :10:20.
separate room, three separate rooms, which they had all like set up. My | :10:21. | :10:29.
daughter is severely brainwashed, to the point where she says anything he | :10:30. | :10:36.
asks her to say, she is not the same Jocelyn that we knew, so we just | :10:37. | :10:40.
want him to release her and let her go and get on with her life. She has | :10:41. | :10:46.
taken too many young girls over the years and I just want her home and | :10:47. | :10:50.
to try to get her rehabilitated to the Jocelyn we know and miss. | :10:51. | :10:52.
In an interview with the entertainment website TMZ, | :10:53. | :10:56.
their daughter Jocelyn Savage denied that she was being held hostage. | :10:57. | :11:04.
I'm 21, I am about to be 22 in five days and I mainly want to say that I | :11:05. | :11:12.
am in a happy place with my life, and I'm not being brainwashed or | :11:13. | :11:16.
anything like that, you know, it came to a point where it has got out | :11:17. | :11:22.
of hand, so you know, I just want everybody to know my parents and | :11:23. | :11:26.
everybody in the world, that I am totally fine, I'm happy where I'm at | :11:27. | :11:32.
and everything is OK with me. You are not being held against your will | :11:33. | :11:35.
or doing anything you do not want to do? Oh, no. Not at all. Never been | :11:36. | :11:43.
held hostage or anything of that nature. Why is your family coming | :11:44. | :11:49.
forward and have asked for a welfare check, why do you think now? I | :11:50. | :11:54.
personally, I don't really know what's going on with that, so I | :11:55. | :11:57.
wouldn't want to answer that, at this moment. The last time I spoke | :11:58. | :12:03.
to my parents may have been about on and off about five, six months, I | :12:04. | :12:08.
haven't spoken to them. They have been causing problems in my life, | :12:09. | :12:12.
saying I have been held against my will, stuff like that, I am very | :12:13. | :12:16.
heartbroken, of what is going on with this situation, it is getting | :12:17. | :12:20.
to a point where it is getting too much out of hand, you know, me | :12:21. | :12:24.
having to deal with this and being 22, is just, you know it is not | :12:25. | :12:29.
right, so I haven't spoken to them mainly in about five or six months | :12:30. | :12:33.
really. On and off. I mean they will text me from time to time, but, I | :12:34. | :12:37.
haven't really wanted to speak to them because of what they're doing. | :12:38. | :12:44.
Are you in Georgia or where are you? I'm not, no, I'm not. I wouldn't | :12:45. | :12:50.
want to speak on that. Are you with or roommates, are you free to go | :12:51. | :12:54.
from where you are? No. I won't speak on that as well. | :12:55. | :12:59.
Wow. The story was broken by BuzzFeed. | :13:00. | :13:02.
Sam Wolfson has been following the story. | :13:03. | :13:05.
He is the Executive Editor of Vice UK. | :13:06. | :13:08.
Let us start with the accusations against R Kelly, because there are | :13:09. | :13:14.
many of them and they are detailed and they come from three women who | :13:15. | :13:19.
have left him. Yes. I mean the story is very well reported, like you say | :13:20. | :13:23.
there are lots of sources and they all seem to talk about a similar | :13:24. | :13:28.
pattern of behaviour, that I say that these women, R Kelly would | :13:29. | :13:32.
offer them moussical opportunities and they would move into homes | :13:33. | :13:37.
either his or in the area, and almost immediately they would have | :13:38. | :13:41.
to dress in the same way, he wanted them to wear sweat pants so other | :13:42. | :13:45.
men wouldn't look at them. They had to ask for permission to go to | :13:46. | :13:49.
bathroom or leave the room. They were reporting he would physically | :13:50. | :13:52.
attack them if they spoke to other men or he thought they were looking | :13:53. | :13:58.
at another man. And it is quite a, I mean people are using the world cult | :13:59. | :14:02.
and it does seem like that, that he had a kind of big group of women who | :14:03. | :14:08.
were all under these very strict worrying rules, and then the | :14:09. | :14:13.
probably the most shocking bit is he video tapes sex with all of them, | :14:14. | :14:20.
and the reports claim he shared those videos with his friends. We | :14:21. | :14:24.
know he said he has done nothing wrong an his lawyer said he will | :14:25. | :14:31.
pursue the accuser, these in particular these three women. Tell | :14:32. | :14:34.
us a bit about his past, because it is controversial. Yes, I mean, R | :14:35. | :14:41.
Kelly, he is a huge R B star, you know, both kind of the club track | :14:42. | :14:46.
playing behind us but he does a lot of emotional church music, I Believe | :14:47. | :14:51.
I Can Fly one of his biggest hits. Throughout his career he has been | :14:52. | :14:59.
dogged by controversy, most famously he was alleged to have married Alia | :15:00. | :15:06.
when she was 14. And there has been not one or two, but dozens of other | :15:07. | :15:11.
claims against him, many of which there have been settled out of | :15:12. | :15:15.
court, many of which involve accusations of sex with under age | :15:16. | :15:18.
women, there was one major case for which he was acquitted, but even in | :15:19. | :15:22.
that case, there was a piece of video evidence which is part of | :15:23. | :15:25.
public record and showed him urinating in the mouth of a woman | :15:26. | :15:30.
who was under age at the time, and so, you know, throughout his career | :15:31. | :15:35.
there have been this kind of long, he has denied all accusations, he | :15:36. | :15:38.
has fought cases very strongly as he plans to do with this case. We heard | :15:39. | :15:43.
from Jocelyn there, who said it is fine, I am fine, I can do what I | :15:44. | :15:47.
want. It got bizarre when asked where she was and in which home, she | :15:48. | :15:51.
didn't want to go into that detail. You hear her parents saying the | :15:52. | :15:52.
complete opposite. For a parent watching that video, I | :15:53. | :16:01.
don't know how much comfort that would bring. But it is true the | :16:02. | :16:06.
women are all adult women and they can make the decisions but I guess | :16:07. | :16:10.
what the police need to do in that circumstance is find out if that's | :16:11. | :16:14.
actually what st going on if there is undue duress there. It is hard | :16:15. | :16:17.
watching that video and seeing it so closely cut so that you would have | :16:18. | :16:21.
no idea where she was and things like that. It doesn't seem like an | :16:22. | :16:25.
open situation, but these women are saying, all the women who are | :16:26. | :16:30.
currently involved with R Kelly saying they are happy and it is a | :16:31. | :16:34.
consensual relationship and so on. Is there an end in sight for sexist | :16:35. | :16:37.
ads that stereotype men and women? The advertising regulator is calling | :16:38. | :16:42.
for them to be banned. We'll be discussing that | :16:43. | :16:47.
just after 10.45am. Let's return to our story this | :16:48. | :16:54.
morning about fresh calls for an urgent suspension of vaginal | :16:55. | :16:58.
mesh implants in England, Wales and Northern Ireland | :16:59. | :17:07.
after this programme exclusively revealed hundreds of women | :17:08. | :17:09.
are living with chronic pain and complications, | :17:10. | :17:10.
following a minor procedure to treat Mesh implants have already been | :17:11. | :17:13.
suspended in Scotland and now campaigners are calling for the same | :17:14. | :17:16.
to happen in England. He is a retired obstetrician | :17:17. | :17:19.
and uro-gynaecologist. He warned about what he sees | :17:20. | :17:25.
are the dangers of mesh implant Simon Jackson is a consultant | :17:26. | :17:27.
uro-gynaecologist at the John He thinks the mesh has | :17:28. | :17:34.
an unfair reputation and it's Good morning both of you. Thank you | :17:35. | :17:47.
very much for coming on the programme. John Osborne, you say, | :17:48. | :17:52.
effectively, you pretty much predicted the problems with mesh as | :17:53. | :17:56.
far back as the 90s, but no one listened to you. In the 60s a | :17:57. | :18:03.
previous mesh operations carried out in Oxford and when I was doing | :18:04. | :18:09.
research in the 70s I come across those papers. I also at that time, | :18:10. | :18:14.
the urologist this is up to ten years after the mesh was put in, | :18:15. | :18:18.
were having to take out the meshes they were putting in in the 60s and | :18:19. | :18:22.
the operation to take it out is very difficult. It requires a | :18:23. | :18:27.
reconstructive surgeon to do it. I spoke to the surgeon last night and | :18:28. | :18:32.
he has distinct memories of it. So what were the problems back then? | :18:33. | :18:36.
The same as the problems they are having with the mesh. The mesh | :18:37. | :18:39.
becomes incorporated into the tissues. It may erode into the you | :18:40. | :18:46.
ary that and cause pain. The same thing is happening now. Let me bring | :18:47. | :18:51.
in Simon jacks son. Talk to Mr Osborne because you think this | :18:52. | :18:55.
operation, this procedure, we should continue with it? Yes. The problem | :18:56. | :19:04.
with prolapse and incontinence is that the ligaments are weak. And if | :19:05. | :19:09.
we don't do something to strengthen the ligaments the outcomes from | :19:10. | :19:14.
surgery are very poor. And mesh is something that can help us with | :19:15. | :19:19.
these problems. Undoubtedly there could be problems. But there could | :19:20. | :19:24.
be benefits and we need to weigh up the risks and the benefits with | :19:25. | :19:29.
these operations. I think the problem is that the risks and | :19:30. | :19:34.
benefits are not really properly publicised. The reporting of the | :19:35. | :19:37.
complications has not been adequate I don't think and part of the | :19:38. | :19:40.
problem is that the surgeons that put in the mesh are not the ones | :19:41. | :19:44.
that have to take it out because the skills required to take it out are | :19:45. | :19:48.
different to the skills to put it in and there are very few people who | :19:49. | :19:53.
have have that skill to operate around the bladder neck without | :19:54. | :20:01.
leaving the patient totally incontinent. Do you accept that? | :20:02. | :20:07.
Well, we do go into the details and some people haven't and some women | :20:08. | :20:15.
haven't been adequately counselled. The mesh we have got most experience | :20:16. | :20:21.
with is called the TVTT has been used for urinary stress | :20:22. | :20:26.
incontinence. It was introduced in 1996. I have got 17 years experience | :20:27. | :20:32.
with that mesh and we have seen some problems, but we haven't seen | :20:33. | :20:36.
problems in the majority of our pabts. 17 year data has been | :20:37. | :20:42.
published for that operation and it is still being used which is very | :20:43. | :20:49.
good for an operation if you think technology moves on quickly in | :20:50. | :20:53.
medicine just like in other areas and for an operation to still be | :20:54. | :20:59.
probably the gold standard 20 years down the line is pretty I will | :21:00. | :21:03.
pressive. Yes, I mean how do you respond to that John Osborne. I | :21:04. | :21:08.
don't think it is a gold standard. The fact is it has been overused. | :21:09. | :21:15.
Some of the people putting it in, not Simon because especialised in | :21:16. | :21:21.
it, it has been put in by general gynaecologists and people who have | :21:22. | :21:26.
had the operation when they don't need a operation when they would be | :21:27. | :21:29.
better off having physiotherapy. Jane contacted us this morning after | :21:30. | :21:34.
watching our konch. She had the mesh prays in 2009 and Simon Jackson who | :21:35. | :21:40.
is with us today was her surgeon and he has agreed to talk to her this | :21:41. | :21:43.
morning. Jane, can you hear me OK? Yes, I can hear you. So tell us what | :21:44. | :21:48.
has happened since you had the mesh implant? I had the mesh down in 2009 | :21:49. | :21:54.
following extensive stress incontinence. Within months, it had | :21:55. | :22:01.
eroded or fallen through into my va inthat. It was like the bristle of a | :22:02. | :22:06.
scrubbing brush which cut me and made me bleed. It caused repeated | :22:07. | :22:13.
infections. I went back to the hospital, had it trimmed back and | :22:14. | :22:19.
stitched over. It subsequently eroded again. I required another | :22:20. | :22:24.
operation to trim and stitch it over. It worked for a while. But it | :22:25. | :22:32.
is now eroded jet again. I visited my GP a couple of weeks ago and she | :22:33. | :22:37.
did an internal inspection and said yes, indeed, it was through. I | :22:38. | :22:43.
questioned her at that point and said if it was you, can I ask you | :22:44. | :22:47.
honestly would you have this done to yourself? And she said no way. Can I | :22:48. | :22:53.
ask you Jane, were you told about the potential complications, the | :22:54. | :23:00.
risks? No. Mr Jackson? I'm sorry Jane that you have had these | :23:01. | :23:05.
problems. And I can't comment specifically on your case because I | :23:06. | :23:08.
don't actually know your name and I haven't seen your case notes. But... | :23:09. | :23:15.
Sorry to interrupt, do you believe Jane when she says she was not | :23:16. | :23:18.
warned by you about the potential risks? In 2009, I think we knew | :23:19. | :23:28.
there were risks. The risks with mesh implants have become apparent | :23:29. | :23:34.
over the years. The TVT sling which we put in and we still do put these | :23:35. | :23:39.
into women after appropriate counselling has a risk of erosion | :23:40. | :23:44.
and we would tell our patients about that. Let me ask Jane. What was said | :23:45. | :23:50.
to Jane, I don't know. Were you told about the risks of erosion? | :23:51. | :23:54.
Definitely not. It has rubbed my sex life. I can't run. I can't play | :23:55. | :23:58.
tennis. I can't ride a horse. It has affected my income. I have been | :23:59. | :24:05.
given the advice that I should carry on taking HRT patches. I'm nearly | :24:06. | :24:14.
60. And that I will have to take oestrogen cream internally for the | :24:15. | :24:17.
rest of my life. La do you want to say to moo pelvic organ prolapse | :24:18. | :24:21.
Jackson? He needs to talk directly to women such as myself who have | :24:22. | :24:25.
experienced these problems and go on experiencing them. It is not just | :24:26. | :24:28.
women, it is also men. I know that's not his area. But it affects men too | :24:29. | :24:36.
with hernias. It is life changing. It causes me daily problems. It is a | :24:37. | :24:43.
horrendous treatment and I think you have to look at the fact that we | :24:44. | :24:50.
worry about putting plastic into oceans and yet we are putting | :24:51. | :24:53.
plastic into how old beings. It can't possibly be right. Simon | :24:54. | :24:58.
Jackson will you meet Jane? Jane, you have had terrible problems by | :24:59. | :25:03.
the sounds of things and we see problems with our own patients and | :25:04. | :25:09.
we also see problems from around the UK. We are a mesh centre. With deal | :25:10. | :25:13.
with the complications as John as burn was talking about earlier, | :25:14. | :25:17.
dealing with some of these complications can be tricky, but for | :25:18. | :25:21.
every patient like you, there are many others who have had a very good | :25:22. | :25:26.
outcome and I think we need to balance that up and patients do need | :25:27. | :25:31.
information and they need to be aware of current guidelines. They | :25:32. | :25:38.
need to know what the risks and the potential benefits are for both mesh | :25:39. | :25:43.
and non mesh surgery and they make an informed decision. | :25:44. | :25:48.
OK. Thank you very much Mr Jackson, thank you for talking to Jane. We | :25:49. | :25:54.
appreciate that. Simon Jackson is a consultant euro gynaecologist at the | :25:55. | :26:02.
John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford. If you have an experience, be it | :26:03. | :26:06.
positive or negative in terms of the mesh implants, then do let me know. | :26:07. | :26:12.
Send me an e-mail. Tomorrow we will be live in North | :26:13. | :26:18.
Kensington talking to survivors of Grenfell Tower and hearing their | :26:19. | :26:23.
frustrations five weeks after the fire which killed at least 80 | :26:24. | :26:24.
people. The rate of inflation slowed | :26:25. | :26:29.
unexpectedly last month, Consumer price inflation - | :26:30. | :26:31.
the rate at which the prices of goods and services bought | :26:32. | :26:36.
by households rise or fall - stood at 2.6% in June, | :26:37. | :26:39.
down from 2.9% in May. Let's talk to Ben Bland. Explain | :26:40. | :26:45.
what inflation is. It is the Consumer Prices Index. It is a | :26:46. | :26:48.
shopping basket of goods and services that we spend our money on. | :26:49. | :26:51.
They compare the difference in prices from this time last year to | :26:52. | :26:55.
now and as you say what we have seen is prices are still going up, but | :26:56. | :27:00.
not as quickly as they did in May. So, the figure that we have got is | :27:01. | :27:04.
2.6% for June compared with the previous June. In May it was 2.9%. | :27:05. | :27:10.
It was a four year high in May. So it eased off. Prices are going up. | :27:11. | :27:15.
The reason inflation has been going up recently in the last year is | :27:16. | :27:20.
after the Brexit vote, the pound weakened, that makes imports more | :27:21. | :27:24.
expensive. So that pushes up prices that you and I pay in the shops. Do | :27:25. | :27:30.
we have the average earnings figures out today? The latest average | :27:31. | :27:35.
earnings figures we have show that average earnings are increasing by | :27:36. | :27:40.
2%. When you couple that with That with the inflation figure, if prices | :27:41. | :27:48.
are going up 2.6% and prices are outstripping our wages. So we are | :27:49. | :27:51.
seeing a squeeze on the cost of living. The other thing that's | :27:52. | :27:53.
significant about the inflation figures is because it affects the | :27:54. | :27:56.
Bank of England's decision on interest rates. They saw them close, | :27:57. | :28:01.
move closer towards perhaps raising interest rates last month. Because | :28:02. | :28:07.
of this slowdown in inflation we are less likely to see a rate rise when | :28:08. | :28:11.
they meet in August to give their next decision. That will be good | :28:12. | :28:18.
news for borrowers because when interest rates go up our mortgages | :28:19. | :28:24.
get more expensive. A treasury spokesman said, "We appreciate that | :28:25. | :28:28.
some families are concerned about the cost of living which is why we | :28:29. | :28:31.
have introduced the national Living Wage and why we have cut taxes for | :28:32. | :28:35.
millions of people to help them keep more of what they earn. We are | :28:36. | :28:42.
increasing our free childcare offer to help 400,000 working parents." | :28:43. | :28:45.
What is interesting is when you break it down and you look at what | :28:46. | :28:49.
caused inflation to slow down, the biggest factor has been a fall in | :28:50. | :28:54.
the price of fuel. That dropped from May to June. The cost of games, toys | :28:55. | :29:01.
and hobby spending, to a lesser extent, but it fell as well. Cost of | :29:02. | :29:04.
fuel, furniture and household goods went the other way. Thank you very | :29:05. | :29:06.
much, Ben. Johanna Konta, whose incredible | :29:07. | :29:10.
performance last week made her first British woman to reach a Wimbledon | :29:11. | :29:14.
semi-final since Virginia Wade in 1978, is going to be live with us | :29:15. | :29:16.
in the next few minutes, So if you've got something you're | :29:17. | :29:19.
dying to find out, get in touch. And will we finally see an end | :29:20. | :29:25.
to sexist ads that portray That's an ad from years ago, but | :29:26. | :29:28.
they are still being made now. The advertising regulator is looking | :29:29. | :29:37.
at introducing new rules. With the news, here's Joanna | :29:38. | :29:45.
in the BBC Newsroom. A BBC investigation has found that | :29:46. | :29:47.
only a small fraction of the money donated as part | :29:48. | :29:50.
of the Grenfell Tower fire appeal has so far reached survivors | :29:51. | :29:53.
or relatives of the dead. Around ?20 million has been | :29:54. | :29:58.
donated by individuals and But less than ?800,000 has | :29:59. | :30:00.
been given out so far. An estimated 174 tonnes of items - | :30:01. | :30:04.
such as clothing - were donated and are still being sorted | :30:05. | :30:07.
by the British Red Cross. The rate of inflation has | :30:08. | :30:15.
slowed down unexpectedly. Prices rose by 2.6% | :30:16. | :30:19.
in the year to June - The Office for National Statistics | :30:20. | :30:22.
said there had been falls in global oil prices and the cost | :30:23. | :30:26.
of computer games. Campaigners are calling for a | :30:27. | :30:36.
suspension of vaginal mesh implants after this programme revealed | :30:37. | :30:39.
hundreds of women are living with conening pain and complications. The | :30:40. | :30:47.

concerned. I have been put on the waiting list and imam considering if | :32:42. | :32:45.

Within two months I had a further erosion leaving me incontinent. I | :33:05. | :33:08.
have been told it would be too dangerous to remove all the mesh. I | :33:09. | :33:12.
have suffered 17-and-a-half years of chronic pain and infection, it has | :33:13. | :33:18.
destroyed my 36 year marriage, the mesh is totally debilitated. | :33:19. | :33:27.

She is not quite ready so we will talk to her has soon as she is | :35:15. | :35:47.
ready. We will talk about schools in the meantime. | :35:48. | :35:51.
Next this morning - some schools in England have told | :35:52. | :35:54.
this programme they're heading towards the "last resort" | :35:55. | :35:55.
That comes despite a potential funding boost from the Department | :35:56. | :35:59.
for Education who promised an extra ?1.3 billion per year in school | :36:00. | :36:02.
budgets, alongside a shake-up of how funding is allocated. | :36:03. | :36:04.
But the cash will be taken from elsewhere | :36:05. | :36:06.
in the education budget, such as building free schools - | :36:07. | :36:08.
rather than extra money from elsewhere in the government. | :36:09. | :36:11.
Education Secretary Justine Greening says she recognised there had been | :36:12. | :36:13.
public concern over school funding during the general election. | :36:14. | :36:26.
But Labour describe it as "not a penny of new money - | :36:27. | :36:28.
their education spokesperson Angela Rayner is here. | :36:29. | :36:30.
As is Jo Wincott, headteacher at Sandon Secondary School in Essex | :36:31. | :36:33.
which is reducing teaching hours next year. | :36:34. | :36:39.
Malcolm Trobe, who is the Deputy General Secretary of one | :36:40. | :36:42.
of the big teaching unions - the Association of School | :36:43. | :36:44.
We did ask someone from the Department for Education to join us | :36:45. | :36:57.
and we asked for a number of Conservative MPs and they all said | :36:58. | :37:02.
no. In a moment we will speak to Nick cap stick, the CEO of the White | :37:03. | :37:08.
Horse Federation Trust he is sportty of the Government, broadly. I want | :37:09. | :37:15.
to start with Jo. If I may. Good morning to you. | :37:16. | :37:19.
Yes, I can't hear you, hopefully we will turn your microphone up. I know | :37:20. | :37:24.
you are talking to us. You are developing an hour a week's worth of | :37:25. | :37:27.
teaching, in fact you can't hear me, so I am going to come back to you. | :37:28. | :37:32.
Apparently he can hear, Joe, can you hear me OK? I can. Thank you very | :37:33. | :37:39.
much. I apologise for our technical problem, you are still intending | :37:40. | :37:44.
dropping an hour a week's worth of teaching pupils next term, why? | :37:45. | :37:52.
Basically we have had a cut in budget, of about ?250,000 since | :37:53. | :37:56.
2011. We have tried to tighten our belt in every way. | :37:57. | :37:59.
PROBLEM WITH SOUND . I am going to pause, something is | :38:00. | :38:05.
not right. I do apologise, we do need to hear from you. I am going to | :38:06. | :38:10.
bring Angela Rainer Shadow Education Secretary. There will be an increase | :38:11. | :38:20.
per pupil according to Justine Greening to 44800 pounds. You must | :38:21. | :38:26.
welcome that. -- 4800. Think what Joe was trying to say the 2.8 | :38:27. | :38:31.
billion that has been taken from the school budget, so this 1.3 billion | :38:32. | :38:36.
is for next year, so even from this September, those schools are still | :38:37. | :38:38.
facing the cuts that from in training, that is why the head | :38:39. | :38:43.
teachers and pupils and parents have been talking about this over the | :38:44. | :38:46.
last couple of months because they are feeling the pinch. It is | :38:47. | :38:51.
unfortunate that schools are having to make these Riley significant | :38:52. | :38:54.
choice, which has never happened before since we have had a state | :38:55. | :38:57.
education system fwlsm you welcome the money but it is too late because | :38:58. | :39:02.
it is not coming on stream to 2018. Any money going into schools is | :39:03. | :39:05.
really important but this is money that has been taken from somewhere | :39:06. | :39:08.
else, so there is a question mark about what is going to happen in the | :39:09. | :39:11.
other department, they are saying they can find efficiency, but we are | :39:12. | :39:17.
not seeing... 600 million is a significant amount. Where is that | :39:18. | :39:20.
coming, from the free school, we know that class sizes are increasing | :39:21. | :39:23.
and we don't have the school places, so the whole system is in chaos, we | :39:24. | :39:26.
have been warning the Government for some time about this, the teachers | :39:27. | :39:29.
have been warning the Government about it, and they have not acted | :39:30. | :39:35.
and this 1.3 million is nowhere near enough. That is what Justine | :39:36. | :39:40.
Greening was doing yesterday. We have to see in September what | :39:41. | :39:43.
difference it makes in individual school, because I am sure what Joe | :39:44. | :39:48.
would say, we have had flat cash since 2010 so there has been no cash | :39:49. | :39:54.
increases into school, there was reions in grant, no money to meet | :39:55. | :39:58.
the pay rises, and public sector pay rises have come through, we have had | :39:59. | :40:03.
big increases in employers contribution to pensions and | :40:04. | :40:05.
National Insurance, when you look at that there have been cost pressures, | :40:06. | :40:11.
a lot depend on where a school starts in terms of its base budget, | :40:12. | :40:17.
so those schools in lower funded authority are in real significant | :40:18. | :40:21.
difficulties. We have some guarantees here, a small increase, | :40:22. | :40:27.
zero. 5% increase for every school. A 3% increase is being indicated for | :40:28. | :40:31.
the most underfunded school, so in September, let's see how much that | :40:32. | :40:35.
means for individual schools. OK. We are nothing if not persistent so we | :40:36. | :40:39.
will try again to talk o Joe, because he has made time for us. Can | :40:40. | :40:45.
you hear me? I can hear you, yes. Thank goodness for that. Tell us why | :40:46. | :40:51.
you making the decision to drop an hour woort of teaching from your | :40:52. | :40:57.
pupils neck term? Certainly, yes, we have had about 450,000 cut since | :40:58. | :41:03.
2011, that is a cut, on top of which we have increased cost, in terms of | :41:04. | :41:06.
National Insurance, contributions the school has to make, and we have | :41:07. | :41:11.
tightened our belt as much as we can, to the point where we had to | :41:12. | :41:17.
start looking at the curriculum and say we peach -- teach an hour more | :41:18. | :41:22.
than most schools and the time has come to reduce that, which saves us | :41:23. | :41:26.
about 100,000 which meanses we can balance the budget this career. So | :41:27. | :41:32.
when this extra money, it is not new Monday, it has come from elsewhere, | :41:33. | :41:35.
recycled from elsewhere, when that comes on stream you can go back up, | :41:36. | :41:40.
you can put the extra hour back in, do you think? Well, the key point is | :41:41. | :41:46.
it is 2018, so what we have done this year will allow us to balance | :41:47. | :41:50.
this year's budget so we will have to stay we are and maintain our 25 | :41:51. | :41:56.
hours teaching instead of the 26. Thank you very much. Thank you to | :41:57. | :42:03.
Angela and Martinful thank you for coming on the programme. | :42:04. | :42:10.
If you've got a question for her, do get in touch in the usual ways. | :42:11. | :42:15.
It is good to talk tow to you. Tell us ho you look back on your | :42:16. | :42:23.
Wimbledon fortnight. I think overall it was terribly exciting. I got to | :42:24. | :42:28.
be a part of something that was on a national scale and to feel the | :42:29. | :42:33.
support of my home crowd, on Centre Court, on Court One, it was pretty | :42:34. | :42:37.
special. Tell us what it is like. Describe what it is like to feel the | :42:38. | :42:42.
support of your home crowd. Well, it very much like, it is goose bumps. | :42:43. | :42:49.
You get an adrenaline rush, goose bumps when you hear so many people | :42:50. | :42:53.
cheering for you, with you, more than anything, it is quite | :42:54. | :42:58.
overwhelming. You were responsible for some of the | :42:59. | :43:05.
best tennis in the women's game, at Wimbledon, some amazing three | :43:06. | :43:10.
setters, particularly against Vici glrks the first week. How do you | :43:11. | :43:14.
keep calm when it is eight all in the third set? I think it is keeping | :43:15. | :43:21.
a good perspective, acknowledging the fact you and your opponent are | :43:22. | :43:27.
playing at a high level, and involves in this epic battle, which | :43:28. | :43:32.
I think was so enjoyable, so for the crowd that was there and it was | :43:33. | :43:36.
something that as tennis players you want to be involved in those sort of | :43:37. | :43:40.
battles, and in that moment at eight all it is enjoying the fact you are | :43:41. | :43:43.
there and you get to experience that. | :43:44. | :43:49.
I wonder, let us go back few year, when you were ranked in the mid 100, | :43:50. | :43:53.
did you think, yes, I can get to the top? I've always believed in my own | :43:54. | :43:58.
ability. I have believed that I can be at the top of the game. I have | :43:59. | :44:02.
wanted to be at the top of the game, so every, every experience that I | :44:03. | :44:06.
have had, every step of the way, I have just tried to use that to my | :44:07. | :44:11.
advantage and to use that in a way that is only making me better, and I | :44:12. | :44:15.
am really enjoying many I journey, I feel that I am trying to maximise | :44:16. | :44:20.
every day and I think I am doing that 95% of the time. I am going to | :44:21. | :44:25.
bring in a super fan. OK. Jewels. Hello, how are you? -- Jules. | :44:26. | :44:33.
I I can't hear him either. I will try again. | :44:34. | :44:42.
I can hear you Victoria. Thank you. Talk to Jo. Congreats on getting to | :44:43. | :44:47.
number four in the world. My question is people say the most | :44:48. | :44:52.
important bit of a tennis player is what going on between their ear, | :44:53. | :44:58.
what has changed mentally for you in your approach in the game to rise to | :44:59. | :45:04.
inside the top five in the world? Well, to be honest, actually, not | :45:05. | :45:10.
terrible much has changed. It was more a fact of simplify things for | :45:11. | :45:16.
me, I am more focussed on process, and what makes me happy outside of | :45:17. | :45:20.
tennis as well, and really try to normalise everything. I think when | :45:21. | :45:24.
you come through the rankings and through everyone's journey in trying | :45:25. | :45:29.
to be the best in their discipline, you can get caught in your own | :45:30. | :45:34.
expectations in your own pressures of wanting to not disappoint people | :45:35. | :45:38.
around you and I think I found a place where I started playing for me | :45:39. | :45:42.
and I started wanting to improve for me, I think that is what happened me | :45:43. | :45:46.
relax a bit more, and just enjoy the process of getting better. | :45:47. | :45:53.
So the baking has helped then. Sorry. So the baking has helped | :45:54. | :46:01.
then? Very much so. Eating the muffins too. Muffins are always | :46:02. | :46:05.
good! Thank you very much, Jules. Let me | :46:06. | :46:11.
introduce you to Sarah Moss. How are you? Well. Talk to Johanna Konta. I | :46:12. | :46:20.
am interested to know what sacrifices you have had to made in | :46:21. | :46:23.
order to compete at the level you do? Well, it's more than just my own | :46:24. | :46:29.
sacrifices obviously. Growing up I made the sacrifices, the left school | :46:30. | :46:34.
to do home schooling so I didn't develop that friends circle and that | :46:35. | :46:40.
social circle, but it is a sacrifice on behalf of my family. My family | :46:41. | :46:45.
moved Continents and started again with me here. It's much more than | :46:46. | :46:50.
just my own sacrifice, it is a family project. But, yeah, I mean, I | :46:51. | :46:57.
think each sacrifice that we made it almost made us stronger as a family | :46:58. | :47:02.
unit. Thank you, Sarah. Thank you very | :47:03. | :47:08.
much. I want to ask you about the scheduling. Was the scheduling fair. | :47:09. | :47:12.
Would you have liked to have played on Centre Court more? The scheduling | :47:13. | :47:16.
was very kind to me and I got to play all my matches on court one or | :47:17. | :47:21.
Centre Court. I really don't have much to complain about, but I have | :47:22. | :47:24.
always said that I am always happy with whatever court I'm on, the net | :47:25. | :47:28.
is the same height. The lines are painted in the same place and you | :47:29. | :47:31.
are still part of the Championships at Wimbledon. So, to me, it was very | :47:32. | :47:38.
kind. I got to play some incredible battles on those big stages. Why do | :47:39. | :47:43.
you think more men's games were on the show courts than women's? Is | :47:44. | :47:48.
that a fact? I don't know the numbers. It is 2-1. That's the | :47:49. | :47:55.
ratio? I don't know. I think that's something that needs to be looked at | :47:56. | :48:01.
or needs to be assessed in terms of what actually brought in more | :48:02. | :48:04.
viewing and more things like that, but honestly I don't know. Andy | :48:05. | :48:10.
Murray was one of the players saying that it should be a bit more equal. | :48:11. | :48:17.
Well, definitely. We are all striving for more equality in every | :48:18. | :48:25.
way. 7.4 million people watched your quarterfinal match on BBC One. Those | :48:26. | :48:32.
are astonishing figures. They are astonishing figures, but astonishing | :48:33. | :48:35.
figures for women's sport? I think it's brilliant. I think it does | :48:36. | :48:41.
break down that barrier between separating men and women's sport and | :48:42. | :48:46.
making it sport. It's a sporting event. It is regardless of gender | :48:47. | :48:53.
and I think that is only a positive direction for us. What did you think | :48:54. | :49:01.
of John McEnroe's comments if Serena Williams was playing men's tennis | :49:02. | :49:07.
she would be ranked around 700? I don't think it's particularly | :49:08. | :49:11.
relevant because she is not playing on the men's side and like she said, | :49:12. | :49:16.
she is busy growing a baby right now! Yeah. Any truth in it at all? I | :49:17. | :49:29.
think it's unrealistic because it's incomparable. She doesn't play on | :49:30. | :49:34.
the men's circuit. She doesn't play among male players. So it's | :49:35. | :49:40.
something that you can't measure that because there is no way of | :49:41. | :49:46.
knowing. Sure. If you don't mind, I think you have managed to keep quite | :49:47. | :49:53.
a low profile really despite your star being in the trajectory. We | :49:54. | :49:58.
wanted to ask quick fire questions. OK. When was the last time you | :49:59. | :50:06.
cried? Last time I cried? I think maybe a week ago. Go on. Why? Yes. | :50:07. | :50:15.
Why, I think, actually, I'm not too sure. Oh, it was a week... Wait. I | :50:16. | :50:22.
can't remember now. Yeah, it was a week ago and I think it was because | :50:23. | :50:26.
I was a bit stressed and I forgot something. I left something out of | :50:27. | :50:32.
the shopping! Like what? I think I it was because I was making muffins | :50:33. | :50:37.
and I think I forgot chocolate chips and I forgot a specific kind of | :50:38. | :50:41.
chocolate chip so I was upset with myself. That's just the stress of | :50:42. | :50:47.
what else was going on in your life! What about the last time you got | :50:48. | :50:52.
really drunk? I think I can count on country hand how many times I have | :50:53. | :50:58.
been drunk. I think... I don't actually remember. So it was a while | :50:59. | :51:02.
ago. It was so long ago you can't remember. No. What's your guilty | :51:03. | :51:10.
secret? Guilty secret? Well, the thick is most people know the guilty | :51:11. | :51:13.
secrets because it's generally all to do with food! It is my love for | :51:14. | :51:20.
food, pizza, gelato and muffin baking and everyone, that's pretty | :51:21. | :51:25.
much as guilty as I get. If you could never play tennis again what | :51:26. | :51:29.
would you do instead? I would love to be involved with live music | :51:30. | :51:34.
whether it is concert promoting or something along that way, I love | :51:35. | :51:38.
live music so I would love to be involved. How about being a roady | :51:39. | :51:45.
for U2? Yes. I am an official fan for U 2 anyway! How do you relax? | :51:46. | :51:54.
Don't talk about cooking? Eating! LAUGHTER | :51:55. | :51:56.
I love to spend time with my family. My close ones. I actually, I enjoy | :51:57. | :52:02.
sin masmt I love going to watch films, again live music, I almost | :52:03. | :52:06.
actually forced myself to be a bit lazy and to just try and just be on | :52:07. | :52:11.
the couch all day or really try to almost do the opposite of what I | :52:12. | :52:14.
generally do and that's running around a lot. I do try to make sure | :52:15. | :52:18.
I almost become a little immobile for a day. If you could have one | :52:19. | :52:28.
wirve, what would it be? One wish? Yes. I think to leave the sport in a | :52:29. | :52:32.
better place than I found it. Meaning what? Meaning to I think | :52:33. | :52:39.
bring more awareness to tennis, to promote it well, while I'm playing | :52:40. | :52:45.
to get more kids playing, to break down barriers of girls and boys | :52:46. | :52:50.
playing to make sure that I feel I am just as much promoting it for the | :52:51. | :52:57.
young boys as I am for young girls. Just overall to really yeah, leave | :52:58. | :53:00.
tennis in a good place in this country. Yes. Do you believe in God? | :53:01. | :53:10.
I believe in more, I believe, yeah, more than just us. | :53:11. | :53:15.
OK. You were born in Australia. You have British citizenship. What's the | :53:16. | :53:18.
most British thing about you? What's the most Australian thing about you? | :53:19. | :53:26.
The most British thing about me? I don't know actually. I think you | :53:27. | :53:30.
need to ask other people because I don't know about me and most | :53:31. | :53:33.
Australian? I'm not really Australian with my habits. I left | :53:34. | :53:37.
when I was quite young. Maybe there is still a little bit of a twang in | :53:38. | :53:45.
my accent. My accent is a bit of a hybrid. Don't think I have an | :53:46. | :53:49.
answer. Sorry. That's all right. Is it true you are so competitive you | :53:50. | :53:56.
made your sister cry playing Monopoly? That's true. It's true! | :53:57. | :54:00.
Thank you very much. Congratulations again. Thank you very much. Thank | :54:01. | :54:05.
you. Number four in the world, Johanna Konta and thank you for your | :54:06. | :54:07.
questions as well. Next this morning, | :54:08. | :54:11.
the Advertising Standards Authority is to recommend that adverts | :54:12. | :54:13.
featuring gender stereotypical roles That's because Fairy's cleaning | :54:14. | :54:15.
power lasts a long, long time. Generations have trusted it | :54:16. | :54:35.
and today, it lasts up to 50% longer Trust Fairy and you will hardly ever | :54:36. | :54:38.
have to buy it either. At least someone knows | :54:39. | :54:45.
how to treat you right. Craig Jones is from the Advertising | :54:46. | :55:01.
Standards Authority who are calling for tougher regulations to address | :55:02. | :55:04.
what they say are harmful Peter Lloyd, author | :55:05. | :55:06.
of Stand By Your Manhood who writes What are you worried about in sn We | :55:07. | :55:20.
have talked to parents and children and young people and what they have | :55:21. | :55:23.
told us along with their representative groups as well is | :55:24. | :55:25.
that there are some genderster you types in advertising which can be | :55:26. | :55:30.
harmful. Like what? The example we have given include for example a | :55:31. | :55:35.
family thrashing the house and then the mother having sole | :55:36. | :55:39.
responsibility for for cleaning up. That maybe true in somt households? | :55:40. | :55:44.
Well what, we found, what we are not saying is we want to ban all images | :55:45. | :55:52.
of women cleaning or men doing DIY. It is just the harmful ones. What | :55:53. | :55:57.
harm do you think is happening because of genderster you typical | :55:58. | :56:03.
ads? The harm that we found is that those very normalised predetermined | :56:04. | :56:06.
roles can have a drip, drip effect on young people and children as they | :56:07. | :56:09.
are growing up and it really affects them. Harm them, how? It affects how | :56:10. | :56:14.
they see themselves and how the world sees them. It limits their | :56:15. | :56:20.
aspirations whether it is to do with their studies or careers. You have | :56:21. | :56:25.
got evidence to show there is a link between gender typical ads and a | :56:26. | :56:30.
teenager's aspirations being limited? We talked to young people | :56:31. | :56:38.
and adults who have given us this evidence. Is it anecdotal. Is it | :56:39. | :56:43.
people saying my aspirations might be limited by that ad or is it | :56:44. | :56:49.
reality? Asking young people what impression they are left with, for a | :56:50. | :56:53.
lot of people, the harmful ones, what they are telling us is that it | :56:54. | :56:58.
can give them the sense of narrowed aspirations and narrowed | :56:59. | :57:01.
opportunities as they get older. Peter, what do you think? I think it | :57:02. | :57:08.
is very worrying. I don't think that censorship is the way forward in | :57:09. | :57:14.
advertising. But to sensor is very concerning to me. The ASA should be | :57:15. | :57:19.
concerned with ensuring that advertisers don't mislead their | :57:20. | :57:23.
clients and customers. They shouldn't be making arbitrary | :57:24. | :57:26.
judgments on whether they don't like a feminist or non feminist advert. | :57:27. | :57:34.
That's ridiculous. This an organisation that's imposing a | :57:35. | :57:40.
left-wing political free view on the market. The ASA have a dim view of | :57:41. | :57:46.
consumers who can make up their own minds about products. . The ASA has | :57:47. | :57:53.
been dealing with harmful advertising for over 50 years. We | :57:54. | :58:02.
commissioned this evidence. I am sure you would agree in that case | :58:03. | :58:06.
there is real harm there, but what we found in terms of roles and | :58:07. | :58:09.
character sttion we need to do more when it comes to the harmful roles | :58:10. | :58:13.
and chrkistics, not all of them though. Five seconds You're saying | :58:14. | :58:20.
it is a harmful stereotypical thing, it is a reality that your | :58:21. | :58:23.
organisation don't appreciate. Tomorrow we'll be live | :58:24. | :58:25.
