As a nation, we are just potty about our pets. | 0:00:02 | 0:00:05
Lunchtime! | 0:00:05 | 0:00:06
We are unashamedly animal crackers, and I'm just the same. | 0:00:06 | 0:00:10
What do you think about that? | 0:00:10 | 0:00:12
But you'd be amazed at the sometimes baffling lengths | 0:00:12 | 0:00:15
we go to for our pets. | 0:00:15 | 0:00:17
ALL: Hi! | 0:00:17 | 0:00:18
Ooh, Bertie, that was silly, wasn't it? | 0:00:18 | 0:00:21
The time... | 0:00:21 | 0:00:22
Oh, that's lovely. Yay! | 0:00:22 | 0:00:24
..the money... | 0:00:24 | 0:00:26
She looks like a princess. | 0:00:26 | 0:00:28
She does. | 0:00:28 | 0:00:29
..not to mention the love. | 0:00:29 | 0:00:31
Ooh, yes, is that nice? | 0:00:31 | 0:00:32
So, join me as I enter the extraordinary | 0:00:32 | 0:00:35
and often bizarre world of our pedigree pals. | 0:00:35 | 0:00:38
Hello! | 0:00:38 | 0:00:39
Come on, darling! | 0:00:49 | 0:00:51
This week, a cat breeder with 40 cats at home | 0:00:51 | 0:00:55
has kittens battling in their first competition. | 0:00:55 | 0:00:57
This one should be one of my very big hopes, | 0:00:57 | 0:01:01
because she is absolutely faultless. | 0:01:01 | 0:01:03
The unbelievable lengths some people will go to, to pamper their pooch. | 0:01:03 | 0:01:07
He's really enjoying it. | 0:01:08 | 0:01:11
And I try to win the love of my new dog, Baz, | 0:01:11 | 0:01:14
who's still an anxious little soul. | 0:01:14 | 0:01:16
So, that's the process. | 0:01:16 | 0:01:18
The process is that Anne does the calling, you do the treating. | 0:01:18 | 0:01:20
Yes. | 0:01:20 | 0:01:22 | |
Most pet owners are happy enough with either dogs or cats | 0:01:22 | 0:01:27
but, as we're about to see, one couple keeps pets | 0:01:27 | 0:01:29
that are a little more rare and exotic! | 0:01:29 | 0:01:32
We start in the Cotswolds, | 0:01:34 | 0:01:36
quintessentially English countryside. | 0:01:36 | 0:01:39
The rolling hills, | 0:01:39 | 0:01:41
stone cottages, a babbling brook... | 0:01:41 | 0:01:44
the camels. | 0:01:44 | 0:01:45
CAMEL ROARS | 0:01:45 | 0:01:46
Come on, Mr Bertie Boo, come on. | 0:01:51 | 0:01:52
Meet Bertie. He's a two-year-old Bactrian camel. | 0:01:52 | 0:01:57
There's a good boy. | 0:01:57 | 0:01:58
That's the type with two humps. | 0:01:58 | 0:02:00
Watch he doesn't kick out when you're doing this, | 0:02:00 | 0:02:02
cos he'll reach you there. | 0:02:02 | 0:02:03
No, I'm being very careful, Joe, believe me. | 0:02:03 | 0:02:05
Bertie is the latest addition to Joe and Rebecca's family. | 0:02:05 | 0:02:10
No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no...don't be silly. | 0:02:10 | 0:02:12
I love animals and I love working with animals, | 0:02:12 | 0:02:14
I can't imagine doing anything else. | 0:02:14 | 0:02:16
My second name's Fossett so we were Fossett's Circus. | 0:02:16 | 0:02:19
I mean, we were the biggest in the country at one time, | 0:02:19 | 0:02:21
and we've had camels ever since I can remember. | 0:02:21 | 0:02:24
I've grown up with camels. | 0:02:24 | 0:02:25
My best friend was a chimpanzee when I was about five, I suppose. | 0:02:25 | 0:02:29
Her name was Pamela. | 0:02:29 | 0:02:30
She was an absolutely wonderful, wonderful animal... | 0:02:31 | 0:02:34
Well, that's why I married Rebecca because they were quite similar. | 0:02:34 | 0:02:38
Same smile! | 0:02:38 | 0:02:39
Thank you, Joe! | 0:02:39 | 0:02:41
Joe and Rebecca left the travelling life of the circus behind | 0:02:42 | 0:02:45
to start a family 14 years ago, | 0:02:45 | 0:02:48
but they've fallen in love with camels so much, | 0:02:48 | 0:02:51
they couldn't bear to be apart and now keep six of them on their farm. | 0:02:51 | 0:02:56
Don't be a silly billy, don't be a silly billy... | 0:02:56 | 0:02:59
Easy, easy, easy. There's a good lad. | 0:02:59 | 0:03:01
Like every member of the human and animal family, | 0:03:01 | 0:03:04
Bertie has to earn his keep, but he can't go to work | 0:03:04 | 0:03:07
with his winter coat still moulting. | 0:03:07 | 0:03:10
So Joe is trying to brush off the falling hair. | 0:03:10 | 0:03:13
But Bertie seems to have... | 0:03:13 | 0:03:15
Bertie! | 0:03:15 | 0:03:17
..the hump. | 0:03:17 | 0:03:18
And there's not just Bertie to watch out for. | 0:03:18 | 0:03:21
Waffle, the family dachshund, is also full of spirit. | 0:03:21 | 0:03:25
Waffle, get out of the way, go on. | 0:03:25 | 0:03:26
Waffle, go away, you'll get kicked as well. | 0:03:26 | 0:03:28
I think he'll be a fantastic camel. | 0:03:28 | 0:03:31
I mean, he's a really nice character, | 0:03:31 | 0:03:32
but I think he'll always be a bit of a handful. | 0:03:32 | 0:03:34
He's a bit like the children, isn't he? | 0:03:34 | 0:03:36
-He's an adolescent, just doesn't get spots. -I don't think he's as bad | 0:03:36 | 0:03:39
as the children, but he's not far away! | 0:03:39 | 0:03:42
There's a good baby. There's a good... Oh! Bertie! | 0:03:42 | 0:03:46
That was silly, wasn't it? That was a bit silly, wasn't it? | 0:03:46 | 0:03:48
He may not be as badly behaved as their kids... | 0:03:48 | 0:03:51
Come on, Bertie, have a carrot instead of dashing around. Come on. | 0:03:51 | 0:03:54
..but Bertie certainly resembles a truculent teenager. | 0:03:54 | 0:03:57
-Oh, you don't like carrots? All right, well, I don't mind. -Whoa. | 0:03:58 | 0:04:02
Cor, you're going to knock me over now, are you, Bertie? | 0:04:02 | 0:04:05
-Knock me over, that's a good idea. -Bertie, easy. | 0:04:05 | 0:04:08
And we've got to slowly get him so we can handle him now because | 0:04:08 | 0:04:12
if we leave it for another 12 months it'll be almost impossible. | 0:04:12 | 0:04:16
I mean, you know, he'll be a big male camel and he'll be dangerous. | 0:04:16 | 0:04:19
In a few weeks, Bertie is going to be starting his first job. | 0:04:21 | 0:04:24
-Whoa, whoa, whoa... -Bertie. Come on. There's a good boy. | 0:04:24 | 0:04:27
Don't be a silly, don't be a silly billy. | 0:04:27 | 0:04:29
There's a good boy, Bertie. Come on, Bertie. | 0:04:29 | 0:04:32
Steady, steady, steady, steady, steady. | 0:04:34 | 0:04:36
He'll be doing a bit of camel work experience, | 0:04:36 | 0:04:39
joining other camels on a trek. | 0:04:39 | 0:04:41
But first, Joe and Rebecca want to be sure | 0:04:42 | 0:04:44
he can conduct himself with deportment. | 0:04:44 | 0:04:47
The secret to training any animal - the nicer you are to an animal, | 0:04:48 | 0:04:52
the easier it'll be, and the better result you will get. | 0:04:52 | 0:04:55
Go on, Bertie. There's a good boy. | 0:04:55 | 0:04:57
And whatever you do with training an animal in any way, | 0:04:57 | 0:05:00
it's got to be fun. | 0:05:00 | 0:05:01
Come on, Boppidee. | 0:05:01 | 0:05:03
There we go. | 0:05:03 | 0:05:04
-Oh! He doesn't seem to like carrots. -Do you not like carrots? | 0:05:04 | 0:05:08
They're joined by five-year-old hoofer Kazak, | 0:05:08 | 0:05:11
to show Bertie how to trek along nicely. | 0:05:11 | 0:05:13
Go on, Bertie, go on, Kazak. Go on, Kazak. | 0:05:13 | 0:05:17
Well behaved so far. | 0:05:17 | 0:05:18
HE CLICKS TONGUE | 0:05:21 | 0:05:22
-Whoa! That's the wrong way. -Whoa! Oh! | 0:05:23 | 0:05:26
That's what I expected. | 0:05:26 | 0:05:27
Oh, Bertie. | 0:05:27 | 0:05:29
Bertie! | 0:05:29 | 0:05:31
Looks like Bertie's had enough for one day! | 0:05:31 | 0:05:34
Who's a good boy? | 0:05:36 | 0:05:38
But the clock is ticking to get him trained, | 0:05:38 | 0:05:40
ready to meet the public on the big trek. | 0:05:40 | 0:05:43
I'm not entirely happy with him. | 0:05:43 | 0:05:45
I wouldn't trust him, | 0:05:45 | 0:05:46
the way he was kicking and the way he ran through the tape. | 0:05:46 | 0:05:50
I'm not happy with this at all. | 0:05:50 | 0:05:52
I think we might be pushing our luck a little bit. | 0:05:52 | 0:05:55
He'll be OK. | 0:05:55 | 0:05:56
I have great faith in you, Bertie, I do | 0:05:56 | 0:05:59
because you're a good boy underneath. | 0:05:59 | 0:06:01
You're just a bit young and silly, aren't you? | 0:06:01 | 0:06:03
Now meet a champion breeder, who's not afraid of a bit of controversy. | 0:06:10 | 0:06:15
This is pensioner Marlene, from Gloucestershire. | 0:06:15 | 0:06:19
MUSIC: "The Lovecats" by The Cure | 0:06:19 | 0:06:21
OK, all in now! All in! | 0:06:22 | 0:06:25
Come on, darling. | 0:06:25 | 0:06:26
Marlene's love of cats started with a gift of a kitten from her mum | 0:06:26 | 0:06:30
when she was seven. | 0:06:30 | 0:06:32
Good kids, lunchtime. | 0:06:32 | 0:06:34
Now, 60 years later, cats are this former secretary's life. | 0:06:34 | 0:06:38
Oh, there you are, darling. | 0:06:38 | 0:06:40
Because, get this, she now shares her home with 40 of them. | 0:06:40 | 0:06:44
Cheetah! | 0:06:44 | 0:06:46
You've had yours. | 0:06:46 | 0:06:48
This is their house. | 0:06:48 | 0:06:49
Um... | 0:06:49 | 0:06:51 | |
I think people would think that anyone that had 40 cats is | 0:06:51 | 0:06:54
absolutely mad, but, of course, it's not unusual in breeding circles. | 0:06:54 | 0:07:01
Come on, darlings. | 0:07:01 | 0:07:02
I'm their slave and I do admit that. | 0:07:02 | 0:07:05
Marlene used to get by with just 26 cats... | 0:07:05 | 0:07:09
..until Mum left her another 14 in her will, | 0:07:10 | 0:07:13
and thankfully, the money to look after them. | 0:07:13 | 0:07:16
You're my number one boy, aren't you? Yes, course you are. | 0:07:16 | 0:07:20
I know each one individually. | 0:07:20 | 0:07:22
They're not just a group of cats that have to be fed. | 0:07:22 | 0:07:25
Every one of them has their name and if they were outside of the door, | 0:07:25 | 0:07:29
and the door was closed, I would probably know them by their meow. | 0:07:29 | 0:07:33
CAT MEOWS | 0:07:33 | 0:07:34
Here's yours. | 0:07:34 | 0:07:35
But some of Marlene's cats have caused controversy | 0:07:35 | 0:07:38
in the cat breeding world. | 0:07:38 | 0:07:40
Tiny little knot there. | 0:07:40 | 0:07:42
CAT MEOWS | 0:07:42 | 0:07:43
Oh, I know but you mustn't have any knots in you, darling. | 0:07:43 | 0:07:47
This is Dezzy, one of Marlene's champion show cats. | 0:07:47 | 0:07:50
Although he's got a lovely nature, | 0:07:50 | 0:07:52
there's something about Dezzy that Marlene isn't as keen on. | 0:07:52 | 0:07:56
I certainly don't like his look at all. | 0:07:56 | 0:07:58
-CAT MEOWS -I know. | 0:07:58 | 0:08:00
The controversial issue is Dezzy's short nose. | 0:08:00 | 0:08:03
Persian show cats have been bred with shorter and shorter noses | 0:08:03 | 0:08:07
over the years, but Marlene disagrees | 0:08:07 | 0:08:10
with the trend for short noses. | 0:08:10 | 0:08:12
The short-nosed cats became popular about 20 years ago | 0:08:13 | 0:08:18
and the problem is that along with these noses come health problems. | 0:08:18 | 0:08:24
Sometimes the nostrils are almost like pinholes which makes it | 0:08:24 | 0:08:28
very difficult for the poor things to breathe. | 0:08:28 | 0:08:30
This short nose trend means Marlene's longer-nosed cats | 0:08:30 | 0:08:34
are getting snubbed by the judges at cat shows. | 0:08:34 | 0:08:38
The traditional Persian is seldom seen on the show bench. | 0:08:38 | 0:08:42
They are saying, we don't want that sort on the show bench any more. | 0:08:42 | 0:08:46
MUSIC: "What's New Pussycat?" by Tom Jones | 0:08:46 | 0:08:48
But Marlene's fighting a determined one-woman battle | 0:08:49 | 0:08:53
to try to turn that tide. | 0:08:53 | 0:08:55
And she might have bred a breakthrough. | 0:08:55 | 0:08:58
These two darling kittens are brother and sister | 0:08:58 | 0:09:01
Panda Bear and Mystic Pearl. | 0:09:01 | 0:09:04
She thinks their noses are a halfway house between the short | 0:09:04 | 0:09:08
and the long. | 0:09:08 | 0:09:10
These two are Marlene's best shots at winning | 0:09:10 | 0:09:12
a competition on her terms. | 0:09:12 | 0:09:14
In a few days she's entering them into their first show. | 0:09:14 | 0:09:18
This one should be one of my very big hopes, | 0:09:19 | 0:09:22
because she is absolutely faultless. | 0:09:22 | 0:09:24
She has a very lovely face, a super rounded skull | 0:09:24 | 0:09:28
but I think some of the judges would | 0:09:28 | 0:09:32
possibly prefer kittens with... | 0:09:32 | 0:09:36
a shorter nose than she has. | 0:09:36 | 0:09:38
Her little brother Panda Bear may stand the best chance. | 0:09:38 | 0:09:42
He does have the, what they call, the modern look and... | 0:09:42 | 0:09:46
..he has got a shorter nose than his sister, | 0:09:47 | 0:09:50
but a lot of them like him are quite attractive. | 0:09:50 | 0:09:55
I think his chances should be great. | 0:09:56 | 0:10:00
Marlene's been fighting this particular battle for 15 years, | 0:10:00 | 0:10:04
and the two siblings are her best and last-ditch attempt at success. | 0:10:04 | 0:10:09
We'll find out later how they get on. | 0:10:12 | 0:10:14
In the meantime, let's meet another breeder | 0:10:14 | 0:10:17
who has high pedigree animals of a very different hue. | 0:10:17 | 0:10:21
To Derbyshire now... | 0:10:25 | 0:10:27
Come on! Come on, girl. | 0:10:28 | 0:10:29
..and the home of some very special and unusual French bulldogs | 0:10:29 | 0:10:34
that have been bred by the former dog groomer Corin. | 0:10:34 | 0:10:38
Once you've had a French bulldog, you are absolutely smitten with them. | 0:10:38 | 0:10:41
They're funny little characters, | 0:10:42 | 0:10:44
they're known as the clown dogs of the dog world. | 0:10:44 | 0:10:47
You're just never bored. They keep you entertained all day long. | 0:10:47 | 0:10:50
It's great exercise for me as well, trying to keep up with them so. | 0:10:50 | 0:10:54
Woo! Don't catch your dog like that! | 0:10:54 | 0:10:56
Now, this little chap is Milo, a champion breeding male, | 0:10:56 | 0:11:02
who's already fathered three litters. | 0:11:02 | 0:11:04
And love is in the air because Milo has fallen head over heels | 0:11:04 | 0:11:09
for a young beauty called River. | 0:11:09 | 0:11:11
Dogs can pick up the scent of a female from three miles away | 0:11:12 | 0:11:16
and River is sending Milo into an absolute frenzy. | 0:11:16 | 0:11:20
MUSIC: "Puppy Love" by Donny Osmond | 0:11:20 | 0:11:22
Come in, then. | 0:11:25 | 0:11:26
This is a real love story. | 0:11:27 | 0:11:29
Milo, from the moment that he saw River when she was a puppy, | 0:11:31 | 0:11:34
absolutely besotted with her. | 0:11:34 | 0:11:35
He follows her round, he's totally lovesick | 0:11:37 | 0:11:40
and he's got eyes only for her. | 0:11:40 | 0:11:42
She is take it or leave it, she puts him in his place. | 0:11:42 | 0:11:44
DOGS YELP | 0:11:44 | 0:11:46
I think she thinks he's an absolute fool to be honest, | 0:11:52 | 0:11:55
but he is absolutely in love with her. | 0:11:55 | 0:11:58
And in case you were worried this was going to end as | 0:11:59 | 0:12:01
another tragic story of unrequited love, | 0:12:01 | 0:12:04
Milo, it seems, might just get his girl after all. | 0:12:04 | 0:12:09
We are actually, this year, going to consummate their relationship | 0:12:09 | 0:12:13
because he is going to be, hopefully, | 0:12:13 | 0:12:15
daddy to her babies, which is quite exciting. | 0:12:15 | 0:12:18
Now, there's something unique | 0:12:18 | 0:12:19
and very valuable about Milo's puppies, and that's their colour. | 0:12:19 | 0:12:25
They may look dark grey, but in the breeding world | 0:12:25 | 0:12:28
they're called blues. | 0:12:28 | 0:12:30
Now, Milo is the dad of this blue Frenchie. | 0:12:30 | 0:12:35
She's one year old, and has 17 show champions | 0:12:35 | 0:12:39
in her pedigree bloodline, making her bulldog aristocracy. | 0:12:39 | 0:12:44
This is Joules, she's an absolute diva. | 0:12:44 | 0:12:46
She absolutely loves being bathed and pampered | 0:12:46 | 0:12:50
and she's really my little princess, she's one of my favourites | 0:12:50 | 0:12:53
but don't tell the others. | 0:12:53 | 0:12:54
Um...you know, she loves all the fuss. | 0:12:54 | 0:12:57
Joules is a bit of a hometown celebrity who gets invited to | 0:12:57 | 0:13:01
all manner of local events but like most celebrities, | 0:13:01 | 0:13:05
she's a bit of a prima donna. | 0:13:05 | 0:13:07
Because she's a little diva... Put Mummy's shower cap on your head. | 0:13:08 | 0:13:12
That's better. | 0:13:12 | 0:13:14
Good girl. | 0:13:14 | 0:13:15
Hello, everybody. This is Joules. | 0:13:16 | 0:13:19
Today, Joules has been invited to a meet and greet at a local nursery. | 0:13:19 | 0:13:25
Oh, look. | 0:13:25 | 0:13:26
Now, here the children don't seem to be at all phased | 0:13:26 | 0:13:29
at the frankly bizarre sight of a blue dog in a pink hoodie. | 0:13:29 | 0:13:34
Oh! What does she look like now? | 0:13:34 | 0:13:36
-She looks like a rabbit. -She does! | 0:13:36 | 0:13:38
Children absolutely adore her, they just flock to her, you know, | 0:13:38 | 0:13:41
and it's just fun to see, it's great to see. | 0:13:41 | 0:13:44
Do you want to give her a treat? | 0:13:44 | 0:13:46
-Yay! -All give her treats again. | 0:13:46 | 0:13:48
She's a diva, an absolute diva. She's stubborn. | 0:13:48 | 0:13:50
If I ask her to do something, if she doesn't want to do it she won't do it. | 0:13:52 | 0:13:55
She looks like a princess! | 0:13:55 | 0:13:58
She does! | 0:13:58 | 0:13:59
My wife Anne and I have always loved our dogs. | 0:14:02 | 0:14:06
Six weeks after our last schnauzer, Muffin, died, | 0:14:06 | 0:14:10
we took on a rescue dog called Baz. | 0:14:10 | 0:14:12
But Baz arrived traumatised by his past experiences, | 0:14:12 | 0:14:16
and I'm sorry to say he's still very wary of me. | 0:14:16 | 0:14:19
Dogs have always been my dogs | 0:14:20 | 0:14:22
because I go out on the course with them walking and golfing. | 0:14:22 | 0:14:26
So he's the first one that hasn't been. | 0:14:26 | 0:14:28
He's very, very attached to Anne. | 0:14:28 | 0:14:30
'I am determined to find a way to reassure Baz | 0:14:30 | 0:14:34
'he can be safe with me too.' | 0:14:34 | 0:14:37
Here's our Bazzio. | 0:14:37 | 0:14:38
'So, I've invited dog trainer Chris to our local park for some advice.' | 0:14:38 | 0:14:43
So, I've brought along a training line, | 0:14:45 | 0:14:47
so it just gives Baz a little bit more freedom. | 0:14:47 | 0:14:51
'Baz might need a moment or two to get used to this.' | 0:14:53 | 0:14:56
Oh, you're a good boy. | 0:14:56 | 0:14:57
'Today, we are going to work on getting Baz happy | 0:14:58 | 0:15:01
'to come back to me if I call him.' | 0:15:01 | 0:15:04
The idea is with the recall, we're going to get Anne to call, | 0:15:04 | 0:15:07
and you to do the reward. | 0:15:07 | 0:15:09
So it's a bit of a double... | 0:15:09 | 0:15:10
Oh, right. | 0:15:10 | 0:15:12
But you're the provider of the nice stuff | 0:15:12 | 0:15:15
and Anne's the one that asks him to come over. | 0:15:15 | 0:15:17
-Yes. -Yes. | 0:15:17 | 0:15:19
OK, Anne, see if you can call him over, and again, Ron, | 0:15:19 | 0:15:22
if you just throw him another little treat. | 0:15:22 | 0:15:25
Come here, darling. Come on. | 0:15:25 | 0:15:26
-Come on... -That's it. | 0:15:26 | 0:15:28
Excellent. Perfect, lovely. Brilliant. So, that's the process. | 0:15:28 | 0:15:32
The process is that Anne does the calling, you do the treating. | 0:15:32 | 0:15:35
Yes. | 0:15:35 | 0:15:36 | |
Come on, my lovely. | 0:15:36 | 0:15:37
Yes, yes, yes, here's a treat. Treat, treat. | 0:15:37 | 0:15:40
Treat, treat. | 0:15:40 | 0:15:42
-OK, excellent. -Very good. -Treat, treat. | 0:15:42 | 0:15:44
That's it. Excellent. | 0:15:44 | 0:15:45
OK, and Ron, if you throw him a treat. Lovely. Perfect. | 0:15:45 | 0:15:49
Let's just try that once more, just to make... That's it, excellent. | 0:15:49 | 0:15:52
-Come on, my lovely. -He's on his way back... | 0:15:52 | 0:15:54
-Nearly. -Look, look, darling. Ooh! | 0:15:54 | 0:15:56
Perfect, brilliant. And Ron, you give him a treat. | 0:15:56 | 0:15:59
'Baz does seem to be making some progress, | 0:15:59 | 0:16:02
'but he's still nervous about me, despite my Scooby snacks.' | 0:16:02 | 0:16:08
Very good boy! | 0:16:08 | 0:16:10
He nearly prefers picking the treats up from the ground, doesn't he? | 0:16:10 | 0:16:14
Yes, my lovely. | 0:16:14 | 0:16:15
Here, darling. | 0:16:15 | 0:16:17
-Oh, throw it on the path. -Yay! | 0:16:17 | 0:16:19
That's brilliant. | 0:16:19 | 0:16:21
'I'm realising it's all about taking baby steps, | 0:16:21 | 0:16:24
'but Chris has given me hope that I can some day get Baz | 0:16:24 | 0:16:28
'to respond to me like my other dogs have.' | 0:16:28 | 0:16:31
I think Ronnie's really good because he's very, very patient. | 0:16:31 | 0:16:33
With Baz, it's all about taking things very, very slowly, | 0:16:33 | 0:16:37
not having high expectations and making sure that everything is very | 0:16:37 | 0:16:41
reward-based, so lots of positive associations, but not to rush him. | 0:16:41 | 0:16:45
I do feel as though you've got somewhere with him. | 0:16:45 | 0:16:48
Oh, yes, and you are very confident and know your onions. | 0:16:48 | 0:16:52
-You do know... -Thank you! Thank you. | 0:16:52 | 0:16:55
Back to the Cotswolds to catch up on how Bertie is getting on | 0:17:00 | 0:17:03
on his first trek. | 0:17:03 | 0:17:05
Come on, Bertie. Come on. | 0:17:06 | 0:17:08
And hello! Who is looking dapper and dignified? | 0:17:08 | 0:17:12
What a good boy you are, Bertie. | 0:17:12 | 0:17:14
Bertie's coming on awfully well. | 0:17:14 | 0:17:16
As you can see, he's a lot better than he was last time, | 0:17:16 | 0:17:19
but, after saying that, I mean, there's still a long way to go. | 0:17:19 | 0:17:21
Do you want a carrot? | 0:17:21 | 0:17:23
Would you like a carrot? Nice and gently. | 0:17:23 | 0:17:25
He's even eating his vegetables. | 0:17:25 | 0:17:27
Good boy. | 0:17:27 | 0:17:29
Now we've got a new thing for Bertie. | 0:17:29 | 0:17:32
I'm camel whispering, and I get a flag and I wipe it all over Bertie... | 0:17:32 | 0:17:36
Where are you going...? | 0:17:36 | 0:17:38
Wipe it all over Bertie, round his legs and things... | 0:17:38 | 0:17:41
Bertie, where are you going? Come here. | 0:17:41 | 0:17:43
Come here, Bertie. Come here, poppet. | 0:17:43 | 0:17:45
In the future, Bertie will need to take a rider on his back, | 0:17:45 | 0:17:49
but camels are notoriously difficult to train | 0:17:49 | 0:17:52
and Joe takes it slowly, getting him used to having his flanks touched. | 0:17:52 | 0:17:57
Now, Mr Bertie, this is a blanket. | 0:17:57 | 0:17:59
I don't think you've seen a blanket before. | 0:18:01 | 0:18:03
Do you want to have a look? | 0:18:03 | 0:18:04
Have a look, poppet. Have a look. | 0:18:04 | 0:18:08
It's only like the flag. | 0:18:08 | 0:18:10
Another carrot, Bertie? | 0:18:10 | 0:18:12
Have a carrot, there's a good boy. | 0:18:12 | 0:18:14
There's a good boy. | 0:18:16 | 0:18:18
There's a good boy, Bertie. | 0:18:18 | 0:18:19
So far, so good. | 0:18:19 | 0:18:21
Bertie seems like he's taking it all in his stride. | 0:18:21 | 0:18:24
I think he's ready for the Camel Trail. | 0:18:25 | 0:18:28
Bertie's tagging along with two more mature camels on the trek. | 0:18:31 | 0:18:34
Joe can't risk him with a child yet. | 0:18:35 | 0:18:38
It'll be hard enough to get him to walk in a straight line. | 0:18:38 | 0:18:41
Do you want another carrot? Have a carrot, Bertie. | 0:18:41 | 0:18:44
Here we go. | 0:18:44 | 0:18:45
It could take another 12 months to train Bertie to take a rider. | 0:18:45 | 0:18:49
Whoa, whoa, whoa. Come on... | 0:18:49 | 0:18:52
Fingers crossed we see some promising signs today. | 0:18:52 | 0:18:56
No, no, no, no, no, no. | 0:18:56 | 0:18:58
No, no, no, no, no, no. Come on. Come on. | 0:18:58 | 0:19:00
No, no, no, no, no. This way. | 0:19:00 | 0:19:02
Well, I'm very pleased with that. | 0:19:02 | 0:19:04
Up until now he's going very well. | 0:19:04 | 0:19:05
You can never speak too soon though... | 0:19:05 | 0:19:08
but he's a lot better than I expected. | 0:19:08 | 0:19:10
Oh, look, something's missing. | 0:19:12 | 0:19:14
Oh. Stop! Stop! His rug's fallen off! | 0:19:14 | 0:19:18
I'm going to attempt to pick it up again. | 0:19:18 | 0:19:19
Good boy, Bertie. Good boy. Now, nice and steady. | 0:19:19 | 0:19:23
Nice and steady. | 0:19:23 | 0:19:24
Whoa, Bertie. | 0:19:24 | 0:19:26
Whoa, Bertie. He's a bit tense about that. | 0:19:27 | 0:19:29
Come on, Bertie, catch your friends. | 0:19:30 | 0:19:33
Rug crisis averted... | 0:19:33 | 0:19:35
but Bertie seems a little bit agitated now. | 0:19:35 | 0:19:38
Steady. Steady. | 0:19:38 | 0:19:40
He's starting to pull me now. | 0:19:42 | 0:19:45
To pull me around. He's, uh... | 0:19:45 | 0:19:47
Come on. Good boy. | 0:19:48 | 0:19:50
Steady. | 0:19:50 | 0:19:52
-Steady. -One last bit of argy-bargy, | 0:19:52 | 0:19:55
but they're on the home straight now. | 0:19:55 | 0:19:57
Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. Whoa. | 0:19:57 | 0:20:00
We're not going to do this rushing. No, keep going. | 0:20:00 | 0:20:04
Turning the circle. I'm too close to you. | 0:20:04 | 0:20:07
I was quite pleased with that for the first trek. | 0:20:07 | 0:20:09
I think he'll be a good trekking camel | 0:20:09 | 0:20:12
and he was quite chilled out there really. | 0:20:12 | 0:20:14
I'm really, really pleased. | 0:20:14 | 0:20:16
Good boy. | 0:20:18 | 0:20:19
And he certainly does like carrots. | 0:20:19 | 0:20:22
Makes it a lot easier. | 0:20:22 | 0:20:24
Back with Joules, the blue Frenchie. | 0:20:26 | 0:20:30
Corin has brought her to Surrey for a special treat. | 0:20:30 | 0:20:33
Joules has been invited to a doggie birthday party | 0:20:35 | 0:20:38
and so Corin's arranged for her to have a pedicure for dogs... | 0:20:38 | 0:20:42
otherwise known as a pawdicure. | 0:20:42 | 0:20:46
A pawdicure is a nontoxic, um... | 0:20:46 | 0:20:50
Just the colour on their nails for dogs. | 0:20:50 | 0:20:52
This stuff just washes off. | 0:20:52 | 0:20:54
If you get it in a puddle and you're going for a red carpet night, | 0:20:54 | 0:20:56
you've had it. It will wash off. | 0:20:56 | 0:20:59
A little bit of pampering for your pooch is great for them. | 0:20:59 | 0:21:02
As you can see, she is really enjoying it. | 0:21:02 | 0:21:05
That's what happens in here. | 0:21:05 | 0:21:06
The dogs usually go to sleep and chill out. | 0:21:06 | 0:21:09
-It's just wonderful. -It has that effect, doesn't it? | 0:21:09 | 0:21:11
-I know, it does, yeah. -Can you do it on me? -Yeah! | 0:21:11 | 0:21:14
THEY LAUGH | 0:21:14 | 0:21:15
And now here's the birthday girl, | 0:21:16 | 0:21:19
a miniature Yorkie that belongs to Kelly, one of the salon owners. | 0:21:19 | 0:21:23
This is my Halloween outfit for girls. | 0:21:23 | 0:21:25
It's got lots of lace and diamond blings round the collar. | 0:21:25 | 0:21:27
You can never have too much bling in your life. | 0:21:27 | 0:21:30
This cupcake here is designed for people that don't want to | 0:21:30 | 0:21:32
look at unsightly bottoms of their doggies. | 0:21:32 | 0:21:35
And the way it works is it's on a bit of string, you put that string | 0:21:35 | 0:21:39
over the doggie's tail, like so... | 0:21:39 | 0:21:42
and as you pull it down into position, | 0:21:42 | 0:21:45
you can then gently pull on this toggle... | 0:21:45 | 0:21:47
..and voila, problem solved. | 0:21:48 | 0:21:51

The other party guests have arrived at the salon, | 0:21:54 | 0:21:56
and it's time to get dolled up. | 0:21:56 | 0:21:58
Now, I've nothing against a nice frock, but... | 0:22:00 | 0:22:04
not on dogs. | 0:22:04 | 0:22:05
The dogs are taken outside for the party. | 0:22:08 | 0:22:11
Goodness knows what they make of it all. | 0:22:11 | 0:22:13
Who makes cakes just for dogs? | 0:22:14 | 0:22:17
But wait until you see this... | 0:22:17 | 0:22:19
..it's the party girl, Zephyr, in cake form. | 0:22:22 | 0:22:26
Now, I know that dressing up your pet is not everyone's cup of tea, | 0:22:29 | 0:22:33
and it's not something I would ever do, | 0:22:33 | 0:22:34
but Corin is adamant the dogs enjoy it too. | 0:22:34 | 0:22:38
Dogs like to have fun as well, and it makes people smile. | 0:22:38 | 0:22:40
There's no harm done there. | 0:22:40 | 0:22:42
As long as it's not harming the dog at all, | 0:22:42 | 0:22:44
then I don't see any problems with that at all. | 0:22:44 | 0:22:46
Come on, babies. | 0:22:54 | 0:22:55
Finally, it's the day of reckoning for Marlene and her two kittens. | 0:22:55 | 0:22:59
Your first show day today. | 0:22:59 | 0:23:01
She's brought them to the Somerset and Cambria Cat Show. | 0:23:01 | 0:23:05
Will Marlene's fight against short noses win the day? | 0:23:05 | 0:23:09
It's make or break time. | 0:23:09 | 0:23:11
Little Mysti. | 0:23:11 | 0:23:12
First, like all cats entered into the show, | 0:23:12 | 0:23:15
they have to be checked by a vet. | 0:23:15 | 0:23:17
There's Panda. I know... There's a good boy. | 0:23:17 | 0:23:20
Good, he can go back to bed. | 0:23:20 | 0:23:22
In the show hall, 400 cats are being got ready. | 0:23:26 | 0:23:29
On average, there are three shows like this every weekend in the UK, | 0:23:29 | 0:23:33
with some owners travelling hundreds of miles to compete. | 0:23:33 | 0:23:37
I still enjoy coming and I enjoy showing babies. | 0:23:37 | 0:23:42
But in the bi-coloured Persian kitten category, there is | 0:23:42 | 0:23:45
only one other kitten that has been entered against Panda Bear. | 0:23:45 | 0:23:49
He is called Fred Perry... | 0:23:49 | 0:23:51
and he's got a short nose. | 0:23:51 | 0:23:53
This kitten hasn't got an extreme short nose... | 0:23:53 | 0:23:57
and neither has he got a long nose, so he should be acceptable | 0:23:57 | 0:24:02
to the majority of judges, | 0:24:02 | 0:24:05
but we will just have to see. | 0:24:05 | 0:24:07
It really depends on the judge. | 0:24:07 | 0:24:09
Some of them still go - the shorter the nose to them, the better. | 0:24:09 | 0:24:13
Bye-bye, darling. Good luck, then. | 0:24:13 | 0:24:16
Mystic Pearl has no competition at all in her blue kitten category, | 0:24:16 | 0:24:20
but if she is not considered up to scratch, | 0:24:20 | 0:24:23
the judges can still choose not to award a prize. | 0:24:23 | 0:24:27
My thoughts really are that she's the old-fashioned type. | 0:24:27 | 0:24:32
The judges that are judging today | 0:24:32 | 0:24:35
like the shorter, higher nose, | 0:24:35 | 0:24:39
they're usually between the eyes. | 0:24:39 | 0:24:41
OK, Mysti, good luck. Bye, darling. | 0:24:41 | 0:24:44
So, it's the waiting game now. Time for coffee. | 0:24:45 | 0:24:49
Once Marlene's gone, the judges start their deliberation. | 0:24:51 | 0:24:55

So, it's not at its best at the moment, but well prepared. | 0:25:06 | 0:25:10
Not a bad little nose, hasn't it? | 0:25:11 | 0:25:13
It needs to go back a bit, | 0:25:13 | 0:25:14
and I think when you've finished teething, that will go back. | 0:25:14 | 0:25:18
What do they think about his rival, Fred Perry? | 0:25:20 | 0:25:23
Much better than the other one, isn't it? | 0:25:23 | 0:25:25
Because that one is a bit bulbous. | 0:25:27 | 0:25:29
This one is flatter. | 0:25:29 | 0:25:31
If I was a betting man, I'd say it's not looking good for Panda Bear. | 0:25:35 | 0:25:39
Waiting outside the show hall, | 0:25:41 | 0:25:43
Marlene's big fear is that the judges could withhold giving | 0:25:43 | 0:25:47
an award if they don't think her kittens are up to standard. | 0:25:47 | 0:25:50
I get rather keyed up when I'm waiting for results... | 0:25:50 | 0:25:54
because you never know what is going to happen. | 0:25:54 | 0:25:56
Sometimes I'm overconfident, | 0:25:56 | 0:25:59
I think I have something really super... | 0:25:59 | 0:26:02
and I go to the board and I have had withholds on some | 0:26:02 | 0:26:06
really super cats, and then I am a very, very unhappy person. | 0:26:06 | 0:26:11
It's Mystic Pearl's turn to be judged in her class of one. | 0:26:12 | 0:26:17
Real sweetie. | 0:26:17 | 0:26:18
That's a lovely bite, isn't it? Absolutely dead level. | 0:26:20 | 0:26:24
Beautiful to see. | 0:26:24 | 0:26:26
Nice pale coat. | 0:26:28 | 0:26:29
What are we...? She's 14 weeks, 15 weeks. | 0:26:29 | 0:26:32
-There's loads of movement in that face. -Yeah. -Yeah? I think so. | 0:26:32 | 0:26:36
-I think she gets the ticket, doesn't she? -Yeah. | 0:26:36 | 0:26:39
Does what it says on the can. Brilliant, lovely. | 0:26:39 | 0:26:42
I am not an expert, but considering there's no other entry, | 0:26:42 | 0:26:46
I'd say she stands a good chance of winning this category. | 0:26:46 | 0:26:49
The judges have made their decisions and the rosettes are dished out. | 0:26:51 | 0:26:55
Mystic Pearl does get a first, no surprises there, | 0:26:58 | 0:27:02
but Panda Bear, as feared, loses out and comes second to Fred Perry. | 0:27:02 | 0:27:08
His owner is thrilled. | 0:27:08 | 0:27:10
-Well done! -Igglepiggle, Igglepiggle! | 0:27:10 | 0:27:13
It's his first show today. | 0:27:14 | 0:27:16
We prefer the more shorter nose, the higher... That's what, | 0:27:16 | 0:27:21
really, as breeders, we're wanting, without it being a restricted nose. | 0:27:21 | 0:27:25
The more sort of open face like that, they call that the | 0:27:25 | 0:27:30
old-fashioned Persian. That's like the old English Persian. | 0:27:30 | 0:27:34
-Hi. Congratulations. -Thank you very much. | 0:27:37 | 0:27:41
OK. Panda. Panda. | 0:27:41 | 0:27:43
Aww, good boy. | 0:27:44 | 0:27:47
There you go. There. It's yours. | 0:27:47 | 0:27:50
Oh, you've been very clever. | 0:27:50 | 0:27:53
Mystic Pearl's hollow victory aside, | 0:27:53 | 0:27:55
Marlene's hopes of success with her Persians seem dashed. | 0:27:55 | 0:28:00
She feels these kittens will never be champions. | 0:28:00 | 0:28:03
As show cats, I couldn't... | 0:28:04 | 0:28:06
..I couldn't say definitely that they would win, | 0:28:07 | 0:28:10
and therefore it's better for them to go to very, very loving homes, | 0:28:10 | 0:28:14
to people who don't want to show them. | 0:28:14 | 0:28:16
Well, I can tell you, those two adorable kittens have now | 0:28:20 | 0:28:24
gone together to a new home as family pets. | 0:28:24 | 0:28:27
For now, it's goodnight from me. | 0:28:27 | 0:28:29
