Day 2 Royal Welsh Show

Welcome to day two of the Royal Welsh Show 2011. I have been

looking at these guys and enjoying the spectacular sight of a now RAF

Lancaster flypast and discovering a special connection between it and

the show. And I have been watching D-Day the classes this morning.

Then they made way for one of my favourite competitions of the week,

the beef Team of Five. And I stepped in as an exhibitor for the

The Royal Welsh Show has an extraordinary 45 breeds of sheep

competing here. There would be no better place in the world to be

edgy exhibitor, unless you had never done it before because then

it is terrifying. That is what happened to me when I took charge

of these lambs. And tell a few weeks ago I had never really

handled a sheep but thanks to the training and trust of the Earle

family I was ready to step out onto the world of the sheep stage. Thank

you very much, I hope I can look half as good. Enjoy every minute

go. In we go. Do you know what, this is such an incredible

experience. I am in a real competition. I don't really care

how I do up far from I just do want to give it my best. This is really

nerve-racking. The you will be fine him. How do you think we will do?

my first time. I am enjoying it. Now I am amazed. When my first ever

a tent that showing a sheep, 5th prize. I tell you what, all the

people back in Cardiff will be really proud of me, the city boy

coming out and having a goal and we came 5th. I feel great! What an

afternoon! I have so much admiration for the people who come

out here and show sheep, I understand totally white the put in

so much preparation to get these animals ready. It is all worth it.

Magical. Tuesday morning and be the classes get under way. Four breeds

are vying for top honours. It all starts here. Since the crack of

dawn each of these girls have been pampered and them to perfection to

parade in front of the judges. James Evans keeps Jersey cattle on

his farm income are Pincher. He is the real ambassador for the breed

and hopes to do well here today. -- his farm in Carmarthen Show.

was five or six. I thought by the time he was 12 or 13 he would have

You did have a setback recently, though, didn't you? Yes.

Unfortunately one of our cows who had won a lot of shows passed away.

That was about a month ago. She left as a little female Kath. It

will be emotional going in the ring Of the eight animals James brought

to the show this year he had the best result with the intermediate

cow in milk, daffodil. It was a good strong class. The winner was a

tremendous cow. Has it made up for the recent trouble? Yes. We will

move on from here. Well done. you. The Royal Welsh Show is as

much about the social element than the competition itself. For many

this is the annual holiday. While horses are bedded down in stables

overnight their owners often stay in lorries. This family arrived on

Monday night from their home in Swansea. I caught up with them just

before their class early the next morning. You are already hard at it.

What is left to do? We have one plate left to do. We will oil her

hooks. She will get tacked up and then we will pop our Radyr on her.

She is a typical teenager, she is putting her make-up on. She will be

down shortly. You look lovely. Can you believe this is the morning of

the competition? I know. I am so nervous. Seeing that you were

reserve champion last year I think she has probably a good idea of

what is expected of her? I think she will have a good idea. We have

been working for so long together that I think we can read each other

was my mind. I love her to pieces. They have just come into the ring.

I guess you must be feeling there is nothing much else you can do

now? You are right, the nerves have now kicked in, all I can do is

watch and hope. Did you get any sleep last night? About two hours.

It was a fitful sleep! But we love showing, it is the adrenalin, we

just hope everything goes OK. It is in the blood, you just do it.

judges? That's right, but she lost in the aged nine so that is why it

is so important for her. I am glad we have come. She is up against

some beautiful horses. We will just I think we are second! Oh my!

admit. I am so thrilled. I think I am probably going to cry. She will

never know how proud I am. Do you think her father would have been

delighted. I am really pleased. She went fast and I am just so pleased.

And the pigs that flew the flag for the nation. The Welsh peg can be

traced back to an indigenous and lop eared peg that dates back to

the earliest times. In 2002 there were only 82 of these pecks left in

the country and they were placed on the rare Breeds list. Now they are

making a comeback. One man is fighting the good fight when it

comes to saving our rear and endangered Welsh peg. -- pig.

farm roughly 200 of these creatures. That is about one-third of the

Welsh braiding hair at the moment. We have also got the only freedom

Food pedigree herd in Wales. We have nearly 200 breeding animals.

1,200 in total. That is from the little piglets right up and tell

the finishing piglets. We had them since I left school for seven years.

We won the Royal Show in 1977 and the farming policy was changed at

that time. When I saw on television that the Welsh pig breed was on the

endangered list I decided to keep a few but I increase them a lot more

than that up to the numbers we have now. It is our native breed and is

a very good quality animal. It have a great mothering ability and

deport which we have supplied to restaurants and hotels, the chefs

always come back and praise the texture and quality. You have

breeding animals and you have show animals. There are always some that

just stand out. I have not shown at the Royal Welsh Show for there

years. This will be my first time showing pigs. It is the best show

You are about to compete. How are you feeling? Nervous. What are your

final preparations? We make sure that the animals are clean and we

drive them of with a substance similar to talcum powder. Fancy

your chances today? I do not know How does that feel? Very good.

Congratulations. Very well deserve. Brilliant. Are you looking for some

more or awards? Congratulations. There are five breeds of dairy

goats competing for top honours this year. It is not just a case of

looking good for these ladies, their milk is judged as well. The

milk was analysed on Monday. Even if a court looks her best, she will

not do well if her milk is not up to scratch. We spoke to the

publicity officer for the British goat Society. He is passionate

about goats and their improvement. I love just half-a-mile away from

you. Tell me about the British tour in topcoats. -- British Toggenburg

goats. We arrived on Saturday to settle the animals. The judging

process is based on the milk yields that they have given. One the day

of judging, the judge has the milk yield from 12 hours previously. He

takes that into account when judging. Unfortunately, we only

have half the number of competitors for this this year. Pratt's people

are not interested in dairy goats or the amount of work involved,

When most of us think about the feather pavilion at the Royal Welsh

Show we tend to think of poultry. But there are some 240 pigeons to

be seen here at the show, split into three sections. Fancy pigeons,

flying pigeons and racing pigeons. We went to meet one enthusiastic

young competitor who is a chip off the old block when it comes to

keeping pigeons, learning his trade I will be taking a variety of

pigeons to the Royal Welsh Show. am taking two different breeds of

pigeons to the Royal Welsh Show this year. My main breed is the

Dutch tumbler. My new breed it is the Portuguese tumbler. I was older

when I started with pigeons. I did not have someone to go through it

with me. My father made me a small box when I was 14 and I used to

take the bus with the birds. don't have the same breeds as my

grandfather because a lot of people would think that he does the work

for me. You need to have all of your feathers right and make sure

that their feet are intact. You have to make sure they're good

enough for their condition of the showing. You have to make sure that

their feathers are not spent. If you picked the feather into hot

water, it will straighten back up. I am passing on my knowledge. But

I'm still learning at my age. still wins in some places, but I am

catching up. I do not like losing! The results came in yesterday. How

did you do? I had Supreme Champion with the fancy pigeons. My grandson

had another champion with his bird. It's you must be pleased. Very

Today, the visitors to the show get to see the unique sight of the a

fly-past by the only airworthy Lancaster bomber left in Britain, a

tribute to Mr Richard Moseley, the show's honorary treasurer for 39

years. The fly-past is honour to all those who, like Richard Moseley,

risked and lost their lives during the Second World War.

As an 18-year-old in the Second World War, Richard, or Dick,

Moseley was rear gunner in a Lancaster Bomber, serving in RAF

Bomber Command's 218 Gold Coast Squadron. This painting was gifted

to the Royal Welsh Society by Dick Moseley to mark the 60th

Anniversary of the end of that war. It depicts one of the raids in

I am joined now by the family of Richard Moseley. This must at been

an emotional occasion for you? was extremely emotional, yes.

do you think your father would have felt when he saw this RAF fly-past?

He would have been extremely plot - - proud and delighted that the

Lancaster Bomber flew over the show today. He would have wanted to

remember everyone who was part of the Second World War. He would have

been very proud. He loved the Royal Welsh Show. It was his life after

the RAF? Yes, he gave all the support that he could to the shall.

He had another life before that when he was a young boy of 18. In

those days, he had the nickname of ginger. Is that correct? It was an

invitation to a fight to use that nickname! You are it's you

representing the other members of the crew who sadly cannot be here

for various reasons. You flew 32 missions? We did quite a few of

them during the day as well. Richard's great day was over

Britain. We lost several aircraft that day. He would give a

commentary as good as you would hear in the Boat race. He would be

telling as the distance. It must have been lovely to see the flyover

today? I wish that Richard was here to see it as well. I hope that he

was here in spirit. We shall never The Team of Five is always one of

the highlights of the Royal Welsh Show as each of the 15 Pedigree

Beef Breeds put together five of the best matching animals to

represent their breed. The teams as chosen by the judge in each breed

section. Last night, I was given a behind-the-scenes look at how this

year's Limousin judge, Mr Craig Ridley, went about choosing his

breed's quintet to go forward to the Team of Five competition. You

had a difficult job because there were more than 100 entrants. How do

you choose the five different animals? You are looking for

animals that match each other. The judge has to say that they are all

good, rather than individuals. joined ringside by one breeder. We

know where your loyalties lie. What you think of the team this year?

They have a fantastic range of five individual animals. Whether they

are quite even enough to win this competition, I am not too sure. As

individuals, they are very good animals. This competition is about

showcasing the breed. This particular breed is celebrating its

40th anniversary in the UK. It has I know it is difficult for you to

be objective, but to do you think will take it? It is very difficult

to decide. The Welsh Black would be the breed that will be most popular

with the people watching around the ring. However, I think that the

Belgian Blues will be very dangerous today. What about your

own breed? I think they will be in the running, but maybe not quite

there. 17 years after it this competition began at the Royal

Welsh Show, judging this year was in the capable hands of former and

well known Sagar Trebor Edwards. -- well-known singer. You were right

that the British Blue won first place. What do you think? I think

he is quite correct. They matched much more evenly than any other

group here. Congratulations. Second time in a role for some very good
